www.spiceuk.com

Hello and welcome to our Spring newsletter, and a special big warm friendly welcome to each and every one of the couple of thousand new members that have joined us in the last three months, as we have had a record couple of months. It must be the Hollywood factor perhaps – apparently when times get tough, it’s proven people go to the movies more often seeking that little extra fun and escape. So as we are experts in fun, and have plenty of ‘escapes’ every weekend, I guess it’s the Hollywood factor rubbing off!

Presented within, is another huge batch of wonderful events and opportunities to meet people, make friends and have fun with a ready made bunch of like minded people, who joined Spice for all the same reasons you did! If you are new to Spice, the front and back coloured sections relate to the wider world network of Spice groups, while the black and white middle section from page 7 onwards relate to your local branch, and finally the back pages feature some of our many wonderful group holidays. However bear in mind that the printed word is out of date the day after it rolls off the printing press, as we are adding new events to the Programme every day, so do keep looking at the website. We also keep you up to date with weekly email updates featuring the coming weeks events, so make sure you are seeing those. This edition features two of our biggest events, Center Parcs in June – acting as our National Weekend, packed with fun and games, sports, parties – including a ‘Back to School’ themed Disco and a St Trinians style school Sports Day on the Sunday, which will be more laughs than Blackpool fun house. We also announce a brand new big weekend away to Butlins Skegness in October, for a ‘Back to the 70’s Weekend’, packed with the bands we remember so well, including Slade, The Three degrees, Alvin Stardust, and many others. I believe our local programme is better than its ever been, with a rich array of diverse, unusual, funky and fun events, sitting alongside all the standard socials, like Badminton,

Rambles, Theatre and Dining, so we do hope to see you on something very soon, be it Walking with Wolves or Dragon Boat Racing. There are some wonderful new holidays announced to – we have two groups already going off to the Arctic ‘Husky Mushing’ for 5 days early next year, where we head off into the remote frozen wilderness, spending the night sleeping under the northern lights in a hut, with the dogs – yes we like to bring you those once in a lifetime experiences. Our annual Turkey Chillout in October already has over 40 people booked, so no doubt that will be a cracking ‘party’ break if you prefer your holidays more ‘laid back’. Many of the Ski Holidays for next season are also announced, with more to come in the next couple of weeks. We have been pouring over all the statistics and feedback from our national wide Member Satisfaction Survey this past couple of weeks, and I am thrilled to announce we donated £1250 to Comic Relief, as for everyone who spent the 10 mins filling in the form we donated £1. The results and deep analysis will keep us busy for ages, but there are some quick wins, some great suggestions for new programme events, and some fascinating results. One statistic that gives me great comfort is that 93% of you said you always or generally get value for money from both your membership, or events! However rest assured, we will be working to narrow that gap even more for next time. Co-ordination of events was rated 67% Excellent, 32% Average, with less than 1% Poor – a great result we can be quite proud of, and its with huge thanks to all our Volunteer Co-ordinators up and down the country who do such a great job. So enjoy the Spring, take a good look at all the fun times ahead, take some action and I hope to see you on an event soon. Dave National co-ordinator

Why did you join Spice ?

Why did you join Spice

Why did you join Spice

A few contributing factors here, a major change in my personal situation, and recovering from a couple of knee operations. I needed a new direction, I had looked at Spice when I left the TA in 1991 after 13yrs service but never did anything. Now I needed to re motivate myself in a new direction and try and get back into Badminton which I had missed for a few years and meet a whole new Social Group with other activities on offer.

Lots of my friends were settling down and I wanted to do a few new things with a group of people with similar interests

I joined Spice as I wanted to do something a bit different and also wanted to widen my social circle as most of my friends are married with kids so their lives are based around them. I initially booked 3 events to see what I thought of it and loved every minute of it

Group: Spice Manchester Member for: 6 years

What has been your favourite event ? Selecting a “favourite” event is very difficult as I have done so many that stand out. The Centre Parcs / It’s a Knock Out, where Manchester came second has to be up there, Dragon Boating is another one, these events bring Spicers from all over the Country together for a week end of Fun, including the Fancy Dress evenings and refresh friendships. But I think my favourite has to be in Scotland for Hogmanay 2011/12 and the “Loony Dook”, which is a swim /paddle in the Firth of Forth at about 9.30am on New Years Day Morning!! Waiting for a bus at 8am in our Fancy Dress outfits and still dark was crazy but funny, but the actual Parade along the road with the Drummer and Piper playing and people cheering was fantastic, then of course the run into the water with hundreds of other nutters will stay with me for a long long time. What would be your advice for a new member ? Spice is a brilliant Social Group, from the moment I attended my first Pub meet and Centre Parcs, everyone is friendly and welcoming and “Have been there “ so are really approachable, look at the list of events and what you think you may like and “book it “, go to New Members Welcome so you meet other newbies and get to know them and after that I promise you won’t look back, I haven’t.Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I have done several Spice Holidays, my first one in Kos, was a water sports based and is one of the best Holidays I have ever had, I have also done the Ski Holidays which are brilliant, you again meet other “ likeminded people“ from all over the Country and have a great time, I have 2 more booked this Year, a Gulet Cruise in Turkey and Lake Garda in October and I know I will enjoy myself. There is so much choice. What is your life philosophy in one sentence.? Every day is precious, there is much to see and do, Spice can help you all you have to do is BOOK IT.

What has been your favourite event? I have to pick just one?! I've loved so many events for different reasons its really hard to choose - I think I'll go for the Edinburgh Festival Weekend - so much in one weekend - the tattoo was fab, the comedy shows excellent, street acts galore, the walk up Arthur's Seat with a spontaneous choir singing at the top made up of Spicers for a student film, the delicious meal in Merchants and the super picnic in Princes Street Gardens - couldn't have asked for more- can't wait to do it all over again this Summer! What would be your advice for a new member? Give it a go! Go along to an event that you're interested in and there's bound to be someone with a similar interest that you'll get along with and once you've done a few events you're likely to see some familiar faces to do more fab things with! Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I went skiing for the first time ever in January with Spice Scotland - it was fantastic and despite crashing into the Kindergarten, getting wiped out by a snowboarder and witnessing an avalanche, at the end of the week I was proud to say I could ski!! Had such a great time I couldn't wait till the next one so am all booked up for 2014! What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway Four people (alive or dead) you'd invite to your dream dinner party? Nelson Mandela - for his stories of leadership and courage, Joanna Lumley - for her tales of the northern lights (always wanted to see them) and her stories of campaigning, Billy Connelly - for his wit, wisdom and dry sense of humour. Robert the Bruce - for his tales of Scottish Independence back in the 1300's and what we could learn about this for today's debate

Group: Spice Manchester Member for: 9 months

What has been your favourite event? My favourite event has to be the Bury Fire Station tour as I got to to sit in the fire engine, tried out the cutting gear on a car and tried on the breathing apparatus etc - this is something I would never of have the opportunity to do. We really did go behind the scenes What has been your most challenging event? My most challenging event has to be Abseiling for the terrified. The actual abseiling/ walking backwards off a cliff was not the problem, it was the height of the cliff as I am terrified of heights and hadn`t taken this into account even though it wasn`t really high What is your funniest memory in Spice? My funniest Spice memory was when I was car sharing to an event and trying to convince the driver that the small dirt track off the main dual carriageway that we were on, really was the right way to go - you had to be there to see the funny side of it but we were on the right track What would be your advice for a new member? Just book a couple of events to see how you get on, I wish I had found Spice sooner. Everybody you meet is really friendly and the majority of people on the events do not know each other and hosts make sure that nobody is left out Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I have just booked my 1st holiday with Spice, I`m going on the Turkey Chill Out in Sept/Oct which incidently flies on my birthday What is your life philosophy in one sentence? You can do anything you want, the only person stopping you is yourself............ Your favourite movie? I have 2 favourite movies, both oldies - An Officer and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman. Hmmm, maybe there`s a Richard Gere connection somewhere

CO-ORDINATORS Corner Welcome to the spring edition of Spice Yorkshire’s quarterly newsletter. We have changed the events listing to a calendar format due to member feedback – turn to pages 14-16 for this. It’s been really busy in the Spice office and sadly Lisa has left for pastures new. There has also been some degree of change behind the scenes, most notably we are planning to move out of our Woodhouse based office and will all be working from home which allows us all a great deal of flexibility to cover more of Yorkshire. There will be a new official mailing address and telephone number from the beginning of May (these details are already on the website and below) by which time we should also be able to introduce a new member to the team.

A new and FREE regular addition to the Spice calendar now is our midweek social evenings, there is one based in Sheffield, Leeds and one in York. This evening is a social for any members or would be members where you can catch up with some friends you’ve met on events, perhaps some new members, a general chin wag swap photos talk about future events and even arrange transport to an event. There have been lots and lots of fun events added since the last newsletter in addition we are pleased to have been able to finalise the 2014’s ski holiday (cheaper and hopefully a better date as well as a livelier resort) in Alp D’Huez. The Summer Ball is now available and Masham camping weekend is back again this August. Look out for the dragon boat racing which should be on our website to book by the time we go to press. Be sure to check our website regularly as we do add items frequently; have a great spring and see you on the events.

A new free social evening open to all existing, old, new and prospective Spice members We now have a pub social evening monthly in Sheffield, Leeds and York with a good turn-out of members and non-members. This evening is a social for any members or would be Spice members in the surrounding area. Why not come along and join us? It’s a relaxed social evening where you can meet up with members and gives us a chance to catch up with some friends you’ve met on events and also some new members. Have a chat over a drink, a general chin wag and discuss which other events to go on or you’ve been on, swap photos or even arrange transport to an event. The evening is open to anyone. These are popular evenings and usually very well attended and so it is definitely worth coming along! For this evening we are also running a preview night so if you are new to Spice then why not come along and meet our Spice Co-ordinator Neal who will be there to welcome you and give a short talk on the basics of Spice and how the it works. Neal will be wearing a blue T-Shirt with the Spice logo on it. If you decide to join the Club on the night there will be application forms available and normally some sort of special offer on either membership or events. You are more than welcome to stay for the rest of the evening where you will soon be chatting to some of the regular Club Members. It’s all very friendly and relaxed, and you’re welcome to simply turn up on the night. The Spice Co-ordinator will be there between 7.45pm and 9.30pm so you need to try and arrive between these times. Why not bring a friend or two?

Water Ski Taster Session A taste of boat waterskiing

Dates: Sunday 14th April from 9:30am to 11:30am Saturday 1st June from 9:30am to 11:30am Place: Sale Water Park, Rifle Road, Sale # (M33 2LX) Cost: £30 Member, £33 Guest The lovely people at Sale Water Ski Club which is a member’s only group have very kindly offered to give a limited number of Spicer’s the opportunity to try out water skiing. The two hour session will give you some dry land training before seeing you join club members on the boat where you will all be given a chance on the training bar by the side of the boat. This means that the ski instructors on the boat can give you help to hopefully get you up on the skis! As the weather gets warmer, it’s time to take to the water!

Beginners Kayaking Paddle around Pugneys

Date: Saturday 25th May from 1:45pm to 3:30pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £21 Member, £23 Guest What is a canoe? So what is a Kayak then? If these questions give an indication of your ability in this type of craft then this is the event for you. To me the big difference seems to be – If you tip over in a canoe (like the red Indians use) you fall out! If you tip over in a kayak you do an Eskimo roll and pop back up again (if you are very good, most normal people still fall out!) This is not part of the plan for our absolute beginners intro session to kayaks. The idea of this one and a half hour session is to encourage anyone who has never been in one of these “fun boats” to come along and have a go. The group will be limited to 8 people so that the instructor (in a kayak) can let you do as much or as little as you individually want on the day. We have chosen Pugneys with its flat water, to make your introduction to kayaking as trouble free as possible. You will not even be asked to capsize (the bit everyone always seems to remember!). You will require a change of clothing (the water runs down the paddle and up your sleeves!), a windproof top, old cagoule or the like and a pair of old trainers and towel. Showers are available on site. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home.

Dinghy Sailing Intro Come and try your hand at sailing

Date: Saturday 8th June 2013 from 2:15pm to 4pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £29.50 Member, £32.50 Guest If you’ve never tried sailing, here’s your chance. This session is aimed at total beginners and offers a chance for even the most dedicated landlubber to enjoy the exhilaration and satisfaction of utilising the natural power of the elements to propel yourself across water. Our one and a half hour session will commence with a short safety talk, and a general not-too-technical overview of dingy sailing. The ‘chat’ will be kept to an absolute minimum; the emphasis will be on getting

out there and having a go. Forget all those horror stories about having to jump out and capsizing the boat, this is a fun session not a frightener! It really is close supervision; the instructor will be in the boat with three students. Come on and give it a try! Please bring a change of clothing (just in case) and a waterproof jacket, footwear should be pumps or light trainers that you do not mind getting wet. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

Windsurfing Intro Come and try your hand at windsurfing

Date: Sunday 30th June 2013 from 1:45pm to 3:30pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £25 Member, £27.50 Guest Extras: Includes wetsuit - please state size when booking. This fantastic value for money session on the water will transform your next holiday in the sun. No need to fry on the beach when you can glide in the bay! No need for previous experience, as full instruction will be given. Feel the wind in your sails as you glide across the water using only the power of nature and in absolute silence! Please bring with you: shampoo, shower gel, towel etc, swimming clothes to go under wetsuit, old plimsolls or trainers to wear on feet. All other equipment and wetsuit is provided, please state your size when booking. Ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

Beginners Paddleboard Lesson Catch some waves dude!!

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost: Host:

Saturday 20th July 2013 Scarborough # (YO11 2HD) Spa Complex 1pm to 3:30pm £42 Member, £46 Guest Steve Crawford on 07891 094976

Today we are guest of Fluid Concept. Fluid Concept Surfboards has been around since 1998. They began as 2 shapers designing & creating boards out of a pure love of surfing, and have evolved the business into what exists today adding the website, then the surf shop and with that came the surf hire & also BSA registered surf lessons. This lesson is aimed at first timers. In case you hadn't heard stand up paddleboarding is the latest (and one of the oldest) things to hit surfing. Essentially it's a long extra buoyant board which you stand on using a paddle to propel it. Great fun and fantastic for flat days and catching waves super far out past all the paddleless fools. We'll teach you basic water and beach safety, how to carry and use your board safely, paddling your board and catching a wave, and a good warm up routine. The lessons we offer at the surf school are all 2 hours long but we ask you to arrive about 30 minutes before your lesson starts so you have time to change and pick up your equipment. After the lesson we set aside some time for a chat and feedback or on any surf related subject you like. We have changing facilities at the shop and a nice hot kettle for the essential post surf cuppa. Lessons are 2 hours long so a good degree of fitness is required and confidence in the water is essential.

Don't miss this fantastic experience at this bargain price. Ever fancied trying a little scuba diving? Did you join spice to try new experiences? Want to do something you can boast about to your workmates? If you’ve answered yes then book this now! This is a basic introduction to Scuba diving in the confines of a heated swimming pool, designed to introduce the complete beginner to the underwater world. You will be introduced to the equipment and learn the all-important safety points. Then it’s off to the pool as it’s time to get wet, where you will get an hour’s time to put into practice everything that you have learnt. If you find any treasure amongst the wrecks, make sure you keep it to yourself! Our course tonight is run by an old Spice favourite; Smudge of ProScuba Diving College & his team. This could be the start of a brand new hobby, or just a one off experience; either way it will be a day that you’ll never forget. You will need to take along your swimwear, a towel, and an old T-shirt for use in the pool.

Tandem Skydive It's no good thinking about it - you have to do it!

Date: Sunday 9th June 2013 at 10:30am Place: Hibaldstow # (DN20 9NN) Cost: £240 Member, £250 Guest (Deposit £40 Member, £50 Guest) Extras: Balance of £200 due on day. DVD of skydive is £95. We now have over five hundred members nationally in the '10,000ft Club' who have tasted the heady heights of this special unique freedom. The members that have done it rate it as one of their best events ever! Target Skysports operates from the Drop Zone at Hibaldstow Airfield, nr Brigg in North Lincolnshire. To Tandem Skydive you are attached to one of the country's top parachute instructors (in keeping with SPICE policy) who then leaps from an aircraft at up to 15,000ft. You fall through the air with the greatest of ease at a mere 120 miles an hour in free fall - for approximately 35 seconds before the instructor eventually pulls the ripcord and the parachute safely carries you back to earth for a gentle ride down of about 4 minutes - to a tip toe landing in the pit. 10

Another chance to experience what is one of the greatest thrills in the spice calendar, our chance to soar above the peak district in the soft light of a summer’s evening. This ‘Trial Lesson’ is aimed at giving you an introduction to the exhilarating, exciting world of Gliding. This is by no means a simple ‘joyride’ - instead you will be given a thorough briefing on how to operate the glider and all its instrumentation and then it’s up, up and away! During your flight your instructor will allow you to take the controls - for real - as you soar above the fantastic Peak District scenery. The instructor will then take back the controls and demonstrate the circuit and landing procedures. Your flight can last anything from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the conditions - you pays your money...you takes your chance. After everyone has had their flight we will retire to the Club House for a bar snack, which is included in the price.

Saturday 15th June 2013 at 10am Rum Tickle, Between Sheffield & Penistone £30 Member, £33 Guest Smudge on 07889 071230

Let Smudge and the team of All Outdoors take you on a little adventure. Situated right in the middle of our region, yet out in the country lies a sweet little viaduct, ‘Rum-tickle’ so this event is perfectly located for members in both West & South Yorkshire. Once you have experienced the exhilaration & excitement of abseiling you will have the confidence to tackle anything. Abseiling is great fun & truly memorable. Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before as Smudge & the team from All Outdoors will show you how. There will be at least 2 ropes running so you’ll not be waiting long before your first go. Adrenaline is mighty addictive & after the first go you’ll be hooked. Smudge has been running Spice events for over 20 years making him probably Spice's longest serving supplier. His events always get great feedback - come along and find out why! These are the kind of events that many of us joined Spice to do. Different events that you can’t just go do by yourself. Come along and experience something new!

Date: Cost: Host:

Saturday 29th June 2013 at 10am £30 Member, £33 Guest Smudge on 07889 071230

What best describes this outdoor activity is its title! For over 20 years, Smudge and his team have guided Spice members in this outdoor activity. Well, what is it? It’s simple – you climb over rocks, you go under rocks, you go through tunnels and you come out the other side. It combines the skills of walking, scrambling, climbing, caving and twister! The fun begins straight from the start – you’ll find yourself laughing while you rabbit your way through the obstacles.
