This time of year, calling bikers stir crazy would be the understatement of the month. We are usually chomping at the bit to get out and about on the road, but this year it seems even worse than normal. I don’t know if it was the extreme cold, the goofy precipitation we got, or just the total length of time that it seems not many at all could get out and about on two wheels. Usually we can get a day or two here and there for at least the hard core riders to roll to help keep our sanity, but this past winter has been sparse. People with PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) are going to be out in full force, as soon as possible, ripping up asphalt and taming the concrete. The staff at Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa wants everyone to be safe and have a great riding season, so just keep a few things in mind. Although it looks like the temperatures are going to readily break and become better, there is still a ton of salt, sand, and other debris on the road. Don’t get so over anxious to rack up the miles that you forget the normal spring road conditions that rain has yet to wash away. Cars have also not been accustomed to seeing us much, if any at all, so they will not be expecting us. The roads are rougher than hell right now with both pot holes and seams in the pavement that seem like mountains. Usually with warmer weather the seams mellow out a bit, and the road crews fill in some of the pot holes, but be wary. The road crews have been waiting on the same break in the weather. We always have to be careful on two wheels, but certain times of the year we have to be even more diligent. Keep your eyes open and try to contain the enthusiasm for riding. Ride safe and return home in one piece. As we roll into April, we have some cool stuff to get out and about to do. Hopefully the weather is fabulous to roll in. April showers do bring those May flowers though, so don’t forget the rain suit! To finish up March, we have the Midwest Motorcycle Show, held in conjunction with the World Of Wheels in Omaha March 28-30. This is sponsored by our friends at Werner Cycle Works. The show was just about on life support a few years back, but Tom

and crew have revived it. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Stop by and see Netty, DRing and myself at the TRMI booth! The next weekend Dubuque HD is having their 5th Anniversary shin-dig, and TRMI will be set up in Mason City at the swap meet on the 5th-6th of April. Stop by to see David, Eryka, and myself at the TRMI booth! On the 18th Big Barn is doing a Bike Blessing, and then the 26th things start to go crazy! Fenders Cycle is having their annual open house, which is always a great time. In Boone the Sleeping Angels Fun Run is happening and is a very cool ride to attend with Joey and crew. Last but not least, in Marshalltown is the ORIGINAL Bike Blessing held by Jackie and Fred of F&J Racing. This charity event has been going on for 19 years now and is often imitated, but never duplicated. As you can see April explodes with events and if you cannot find something to do on the TRMI events listing toward the back of the magazine, you are not looking hard enough! You may have noticed that the thickness of the magazine has been increasing the last few months. That is normal really for this time of year as the more supporters of the magazine means that there will be more pages. We try to keep a balance and make this a good rag to pick up. We are growing and readers and supporters are realizing that TRMI is the place to be to let the biker world in Iowa know what is going on. We would like to thank our supporters for making this all possible, and thank the readers for staying interested and submitting things to us. 2014 is proving to be another growing year for us so far, and we would sure like to keep that up! I am a mom. I am a wife. I am a friend. I am on a cemetery committee. I am vice president of the high school music boosters. I am on the pool board. In the last year I joined the TRMI family. My name to most of you is DRing, I am the 99 Counties Chic! By day I am a librarian, one night a week I sling drinks at Lugger’s in Kimballton Iowa. My dad always said “I was vaccinated with a stereo needle,” and I have a serious inability to say no when I see someone in need of help, this is a dangerous combination when mixed with a charming magazine editor behind on his deadline for his 99 Counties Article and the county he is working on just happens to be the county I was born in! Me and my big mouth told him that I would write his article for him, never believing for a minute that he would throw me the reins and tell me to run with them but he did along with two days to see what I could do. The next day I called some friends and family who still lived in the area and chatted with them as I wanted to make sure my recollection of everything was right and off I went writing about Fayette County Iowa. A day later I submitted the article to Vernon and waited. I gave the disclaimer that I would be happy to make any changes needed just give me a little guidance! He said thanks and I didn’t hear from him for a week. When I did, he said things were just fine no changes needed and if anything was needed Netty, his Copy Editor would handle it. I waited on pins and needles for that issue to come out and when it did I was so excited…there it was in print, my article. I was so proud! I hoped and thought maybe something else would come to pass but over the next week things were status quo. Then something fantastic happened, my article generated an ad sale! A month later the Big V Man asked if I would be interested in maybe doing another article?! Um yes please! You want to give me the opportunity to travel our fine state, talk to people and then write about it, well sign me up, this is how DRing came to be. As the last year has progressed I have spent more time with the TRMI family. Their experiences have helped me learn and grow in my knowledge base. That is the great thing about being in the fold; there are so many different and great people willing to help you learn about so many different things. Vernon, our Editor, could see that I had a big mouth that could be utilized to spread the good TRMI word. This led me to the world of ad sales. He drug me into sales kicking and screaming but I am so thankful that he did. Helping to bring people together and exploring new places and events is very stimulating. If you know of a place that should do some advertising please let me know! I am also in the “I’s” on my journey through the 99 Counties. CMA Notes
It’s been great to see everyone and catch up at the recent shows and swap meets as we wait on the coming thaw and the hope of awesome rides to come. Now is the time to make some plans, put in for that vacation, get those new tires, batteries etc… Hope springs eternal, right? I notice that for me, the swap meets seem to be more about seeing the people than finding that elusive bike part. Don’t get me wrong, I love to find treasures but anymore I don’t spend as much time looking as I once would. The relationships become more important than the bikes. Reminds me of years ago when Karla and I were very active in a National Hunting Dog Organization. We tested and judged dogs, bred dogs, and pretty much lived dogs for a period of about 7 years. One day at one of the judging seminars, the head of the club’s breeding committee and his wife were talking to all of us. This was a couple who had fled Czechoslovakia when the Communists took over their country, had left their homes and belongings, literally walking away and over the border. They came here, started a new life and helped resurrect this breed after its near decimation during the WWII years. They used their connections later to bring dogs from Germany and Czechoslovakia to infuse into our line here in the US with great results. In other words they had seen a lot and were well respected in many countries. I recall the wife getting up at one point and admonishing the gathering that no matter what, these are just dogs and to remember that it’s the people that are important. It’s a good reminder to keep things in perspective whether it’s bikes, dogs, money, jobs or even religion.
that what they needed was not the religious system but the relationship with God through him. We need to know Jesus like we would know a best friend, not an unapproachable being. He came to earth as a man to experience all the trials and temptations that we experience and to provide that sacrifice for us. He was - and is - real. A well-known pastor and blues artist wrote about not getting caught in the confusion between religion and relationship. That religion with its man-made rules and regulations can become a prison and the enemy of relationship. A relationship with Jesus frees us to become the people we were meant to be. So enjoy the journey, keep things in perspective and appreciate the people who the Lord brings your way. Scripture tells us that everyone is born with a basic desire and longing for God. For many, especially in our country’s culture, that desire is perverted by religion or doing religious activities at the expense of what is really important, which is the relationship with Jesus. We have been saturated and inoculated with religion. When you read the gospel accounts of Jesus’s life, he repeatedly condemned the religious leaders of the day for making a show and putting undue burdens on the people. Jesus was in turn condemned by them for hanging out with the sick, the lame, the prostitutes, tax collectors and other societal outcasts. He had compassion on them and knew

E Electra-Glo Fairing Edge Light Kit. This kkit of forward facing LED lights adds to tthe contour of the bat wing fairing. They are available in gloss black or chrome and fit a wide variety of models.
Light the Way! I don’t know about you, but these couple of 60+ degree days are really getting to me. Even with all the nasty stuff out there on the roads I will admit I even had to break down and get mine out for a short put. What can I say we are finally approaching the start of the riding season, and it is about time! While we were all stuck inside from the cold weather, Harley worked hard to make sure there were new accessories available for Spring 2014. If you are looking to customize your ride, the new LED lighting accessories are a “must have” during this riding season. If you’re looking for a little more rear lighting on your ride then you are looking for the new Electra-Glo LED saddlebag run/brake/ turn lamp. It adds functional lighting to the rear of 2014 Touring motorcycles. These lamps mount high up on the saddlebag and are complementary to the TourPak carrier rear lighting; with the elimination of the separate rear turn signals by putting them in the tour-pak light bar on both the Ultra and Limited models. They also allow removal of the Tour-Pak carrier with a detachable mounting kit. When the ignition is on, the fast-acting LED lamps glow red, and intensify when turn signals or brakes are applied. That’s not all they have for your ght saddlebags. If you’re looking to light up the side of your ride a bit more or simply match your saddlebags to your tour-pak Harley introduced the Electra-Glo saddlebag side marker light kit. The saddlebag side markers add a splash of light to the lower edge of the saddlebags on 2014 Touring models. These lamps are housed inside a mirror chrome frame, and are available ailable in red or

99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 52 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month I will revisit each county as a featured article. I will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa. Ida County Iowa Ida County Iowa is in west central Iowa. It is not the biggest or flashiest county in the state. They don’t have the most people. They don’t have the most hills or curves. Heck, they don’t even have a bar in each of their five towns. What they do have are some incredible unassuming people going about their day just like you and I who are willing to go the extra mile for a stranger who comes poking around their county! Ida County was the ninety-third county formed in Iowa. They are the third least populated county in the state. The history of the county is varied. One story tells of the county being named after an early settler’s daughter, Ida. Another version is that it was named after Mount Ida in Greece. I would recommend talking to the locals about this fact if you want a deeper understanding of the real truth! I came into the county from the south on Hwy 59 and took a sharp turn west onto county road D54. This was not my favorite road! It was quite rough, but I wanted to make a loop around the county and this was the easiest way to get to Battle Creek. Thankfully, I turned north onto L51 and was fortunate to find a fantastic county park called Crawford

spring and summer as opposed to the white in the picture! The camping area is vast, as are the rest rooms and lodge house. Definitely worth a stop! I sidled on into Battle Creek and fist thought… oh my goodness…there’s a lot of apartments here, but no bar, no restaurant so no food per say and the bakery was closed at 2:08 in the afternoon. As I stood on the main drag and looked around I decided to go to where the cars were and that took me to the Library/City Hall where three sassy broads greeted me, and I say that lovingly! Jenise, Kathy and Diane were full of information, stories, history and laughter. Jenise used to ride and had great memories of her time on two wheels, Kathy with a K runs the local Sparky Station where you can get some grub and fuel just around the corner form the City Clerk’s Office and Diane keeps the town running like a well-oiled machine. The ladies told me that the restaurant in town burned down, the apartments were mostly owned by one fella and the ones across the street were where the old restaurant used to be, however they are remodeling so they can have a new one. These lovely ladies guided me to the Crawford Creek Recreation Area, they suggested I check out the Holstein Rum Distillery and the Moorhead Park in Ida Grove and of course, the castles, everybody knows about the castles. After chatting away about a half an hour it was time to keep moving. I bade the lovely ladies of Battle Creek adieu and was on my way east on State Hwy 175 into Ida Grove the county seat.
Right on Hwy 175 on the edge of Ida Grove there is an entrance to Moorehead Park. A cool thing about this park in the winter is that they have a HUGE sledding hill with a tow rope to get you back to the top of the hill, no really, where was this when I was Creek Recreation Area. I decided to follow the ladies recommendation and take Hwy 59 north to Holstein and am glad that I did. “One block west of the traffic light” you will find Werner Distilling, featuring Holstein Rum. I arrived at 4:15, Greg Brunelle the proprietor was so fantastic to chat with that we didn’t even get to talking about the Rum until 5:30. Holstein Rum is an Iowa company. Greg does everything right there in Holstein but you can buy his product all over the state. I am by nature a whiskey drinker but Greg’s Holstein Single Barrel Sipping Rum made me a rum drinker. I hoped on his web site, found out where to buy some and am spreading the word to my fellow consumers!

“STOP BLOCKING ME OUT!” The MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS GROUP (MAG) of North Iowa’s campaign to remove vehicle windshield obstructions needs your support! Read on to see how you can help make us all safer this riding season. We’ve all seen it, far too many times. Passenger cars and trucks with all kinds of things hanging from the interior rear view mirrorLei’s, CD’s, Work ID’s, necklaces, air fresheners you name it. These items are not necessary, and in fact illegal. Just common sense would tell you that they don’t belong where the driver needs to be looking. Now here’s another important fact about blocked motorist vision- let’s talk about the handicap parking placards hanging from rear view mirrors. I have family members that use them, I’m certain many of you do as well. But did you know it’ illegal to drive a car with one hanging from the mirror (Iowa Code 321L)? The next time you’re out driving take a count of how many of these you meet on the road that are being used improperly; the fact is- that is a parking permit, not a driving permit. It is illegal to leave on the mirror when the car is being driven, but this law is rarely if ever enforced in this state. We at MAG are not trying to single out disabled drivers, but we also believe as legally licensed motorcyclists we are entitled to every opportunity to be seen by motorists, disabled or not. If you too believe this issue deserves more attention, please join MAG in our campaign to rid driver’s motorist’s windshields of the obstructions that prevent us, as well as pedestrians, bicyclists and even other vehicles from being seen. Talk to your state legislators, and tell them to strengthen the obstructed vision laws. Encourage local law enforcement to start citing motorists for blocked vision. And by all means, take anything off your own mirror that can block your vision of the road. The next time you’re parked in your car, try holding up a few common objects and see how little it takes to block your vision. Even a pencil width of an obstruction can block far more than you’d imagine. We’ve enclosed a photo of an Iowa and an Arizona handicap placard for comparison. The dark blue placard is the Arizona version, and it very clearly states “remove from mirror before operating vehicle. It’s also on the Iowa placard, but buried in a needless jumble of words. Let’s encourage the Iowa DOT to make the notice on the handicap placard more visible. Cut the picture out below and send it to the DOT and ask them why we can’t have some plain English on the placard that will save lives: With just a few simple changes and a push to raise awareness, we think we can offer a big change in motorcycle safety in Iowa. Well it finally looks like Mother Nature is getting over her case of PMS, that’s Parked Motorcycle Syndrome, for the non-riding readers. She has become quiet a tease with a few days just nice enough to get in a quickie. Bikers are a proud group of people but they are never too proud to brag about getting a quickie.

Surely someone or a group of someone’s that reads this magazine can find a way to get more screenings of this documentary brought to Iowa. If nothing else, do it so that the Iowa bikers who have searched for the answer to the age old question Why We Ride can finally get some damn answers. If it doesn’t happen, I guess my sick mind will just have to continue toying with the mystery.
In the mean time, the clocks have been moved forward, the days are getting longer, and a quickie can bring a lot of I’d like to report that I have seen the documentary and it was pleasure to life, so get out and ride. the best thing that happened to the motorcycling community since the invention of push button start. However, so far it Shifty LaRue appears that there have only been 2 successful screenings of the documentary in Iowa. The first was held in Des Moines in December. The second was held in Cedar Rapids in January, and the third was attempted in Independence in March. In order for a screening to take place a designated number of tickets must be sold in advance. If enough tickets sell, the documentary will be played and the venue will be filled with bikers. My imagination started running wild just thinking about how much fun it could be to have a 100 bikers huddled together in a dark movie theater. Pretty sure we wouldn’t have to worry about anyone getting shot for using their cell phone or texting a babysitter. The tickets at the Independence screening were only $10 so I called up 4 riding buddies and invited them to join me for a road trip. In the true biker spirit of promoting the cause I committed to buying 10 seats. I will ride along side these guys any day of the week, anywhere they want to go, 22 - TRMI APRIL 2014

Dr. Scott Smith USMC, Kimballton Iowa Sometimes you forget, sometimes we all forget. Sometimes life takes us away from our passion for riding and country, but if you are lucky, it will bring us back around again. Dr. Scott Smith is a guy not unlike any other guy you might meet on the streets of any nondescript small Iowa town. Life took him away from the riding world for a while, but he is back with an even deeper passion for riding and country. Here is a little on how he came back to us and what he is doing to give back to his fellow brothers in arms. As a young man Scott was living the good life, he had a Honda 160, then a single cylinder Bugati followed by a Triumph 250, ”the perfect wheelie bike”. Finally as so many young men do he bought and refurbished a 1953 Harley 45 trike with a 20” over springer front end, he even did the paint himself. However working and paying for college got to be a bit much and again as so many others he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp!

All it took was a test ride to remind him of how good it felt to have the wind in his hair and the sun on his face. He ordered his Deuce that day. The clean lines and comfortable fit are what drew Scott to that Deuce. He has hopes of adding a bagger to his motorcycle family, as the customization options are endless and the idea of doing a little painting and body work are enticing! All the nostalgia with the motorcycles pushed him towards another passion, once a Marine always a Marine. While working towards retirement Scott started New Century Art Guild, the guild was formed by a Veteran for Veterans. The mission statement is “We promote professional practices in the field of art by encouraging new careers, new directions and new possibilities for artists and veterans”. The first public project that the guild had a hand in was a sculpture park depicting Hans Christian Andersen stories. You can find more information about the art guild at www. newcenturyarguild.org.
Scott has always been a bit of a loner, ridding on his own, but with retirement he has hopes of getting out a bit more and joining on some group rides. He will most likely be found on the streets of Kimballton at the Art Guild or throwing his wife on the back of his bike and hitting the Iowa highways. It would have been odd to have the meat for the pizza be sausage Let me just start out by saying I love pizza. Now, having said unless the burger meat was sausage as well! Name a burger and a pizza the same and share the topping list between them!!!!! (There are also both a Hawaiian burger and pizza so I assume they too share a topping list but I didn’t confirm that.) Farm Bill The Agricultural Act of 2014 that was signed into law by President Obama contains a provision that helps to deter the distribution of E15 fuels into the U.S. market. The AMA and I agree that this provision is a huge victory for the owners of the more than 22 million motorcycles and ATV’s, not to mention weed trimmers, hedge clippers, blowers, chainsaws, and lawn mowers. Those vehicles and lawn tools could be damaged by the inadvertent use of E15 fuel (which contains up to 15% ethanol). It can also void vehicle warranties. The new Farm Bill lasts until 2018 and prohibits the use of the “Rural Energy for America Program” to grant money to buy and install blender pumps to sell the E15. Tom Vilsack had intended to use REAP funding to install 10,000 blender pumps by 2016.
EPA has approved the use of the E15 fuel in 2001never light duty vehicles (cars, pickups, and vans); they have not approved its use in any motorcycles or ATVs. Folks, what you’ve just read are the facts. I just thought it would be good to mention that the AMA (www.americanmotorcyclist. com) is standing up for us.
