Spring is here! We have the usual unstable weather, road debris, cages that don’t get the fact that we are back, and some potholes that are large enough they could hide Jimmy Hoffa, but the riding season is upon us. As everyone starts to get the bikes out, be safe, keep your head on a swivel and watch for hazards, but get out there and start getting some miles on the two and three wheel machines that we love!
The more Check-Ins you make during the season, the more chances you have in the barrel on that day to win! If you have 20 CheckIns, you have 20 chances, if you have 300 CheckIns you have 300 chances to win! The more you get out to the spots on the Tall Corn Run, the better chance you have to win both the monthly prizes and the grand prizes at the end of the season.

CMA Notes
It’s been great seeing everyone at the shows and swap meets, very therapeutic for the malady of winter. I have been out and braved the sand on the old bike several times and the new one is scheduled for its home coming from the shop/storage next week. The new one has been a bit of a disappointment though. It looks great, it’s a model I’ve always wanted but it also has had some hidden factory mechanical issues. I think we have all been there and have our own stories of disappointment. Each mechanic you talk to has their own different theory, diagnosis and solution. Of course being a new bike, it’s trapped in the black hole of factory warranty and parts. Call the regional reps and you get the dreaded, “I’m from the factory and I’m here to help you”. Actually we do have some local dealership people who really try to help, but I sure wonder how many gazillion of the same issue complaints it takes to warrant a recall. Well, the fingers are crossed and the hope is for it to show up fixed and raring to go.

The Bible says that He knows and then chooses to remove our sin as far as the east is from the west. Meaning we are shiny inside and out. Talk about warranty, you can’t get better than eternal warranty. Psalm 103 tells of God’s steadfast love and mercy towards those who fear Him. He shows compassion as a father to his children. In all of history there has been one Son of God, one that could bridge that divide between us and God: not Mohamed, not Buddha, not Confucius, or even Earl’s Karma list, but Jesus. Unfortunately it’s not just bikes, it’s us also. We too, have lots of defects and hidden issues no matter how shiny we look. {Okay, maybe a few of us look a bit rat-bikey}. Anyway, inside we are so painfully aware of our own menagerie of seemingly insurmountable issues. On one hand the Bible tells us that we are made in God’s own image, but how can that be? Look in the morning newspaper- a broken world full of all kinds of tragedy and injustices. Many people striving to do right but the corruption and killing goes on. Makes us look a bit schizophrenic. 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 29 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa. O’Brien County Located in the Northwest corner of Iowa, O’Brien County is intersected by highways 59 and 18 and was founded in 1851. The county was named for William Smith O’Brien, a leader for Irish independence in 1848. O’Brien County has a total area of 573 square miles, of which only 0.2 square miles is water. The present courthouse was completed in 1917 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are eight cities within O’Brien County, each with its own small town attributes. The city of Archer was founded in 1888. There are approximately 130 people residing within the community which occupies 57 acres. It was originally named for John Archer, who just happened to own the town site. The town had a large centennial celebration in 1988. Complete with a parade, fashion show, street dance, and “greased pig” contest. The celebration honored Northwest Iowan heritage and their agricultural roots. The town of Archer supports two churches: one Methodist and one Reformed.
County and home to over 1,600 people, it’s a sight bigger than our first two stops. Hartley builds on its traditional agricultural strengths in diverse and innovative ways and has brought in technology based businesses to help ensure the community’s success. While in Hartley if you get a hankering for some grub, you can fill up at Crazy Bob’s MAXimum BBQ or Red’s Café. If you’re just looking for a cold one, stop by the Stoplight Lounge for a little refreshment. If you happen to be cruising by on August 5th or 6th this year make sure to stop by for the annual Summer Celebration, it’s sure to be a good time! Paullina was laid out in 1882 when the Chicago and Northwestern Railway was extended to that point. Paullina takes its name from two brothers, Henry and D. Edward Paullin. The Paullin boys came from back east and were Harvard graduates. They came to the Iowa prairies and bought 7,000 acres of land in O’Brien County in 1880. They were entrepreneurs and speculators, looking to make money in the booming land business of the west. Paullina sports a fabulous golf course originally built in 1914, but sure to please golfers of today, should you feel the need to play a little “whack f*ck“ while on your adventures. There are a over 1,000 residents in Paullina, and they have several P great restaurants and bars g for f your dining and drinking fo pleasure, each with hometown p friendliness you’d expect in fr fr small town Iowa. s
Next in O’Brien County comes N Primghar. The name Primghar P was w received from the first letter of eight people who had a l le major part in platting the town. m In In a brief history of O’Brien County, C Arthur M. Schierholz states: s “the courthouse location in i (the village of) O’Brien in the extreme southeast corner of the county became a growing issue. To resolve the matter, an election was held on November 11, 1872, to determine the Calumet had its start about 1887 with the building of location of the courthouse.” Another historian wrote, the railroad through that territory. Today the little burg “Probably the only case in Iowa, perhaps anywhere, has a population of 170 people and occupies an area of where a bare spot of raw prairie was actually voted to 192 acres. Sanborn’s Miller Park and Golf Course is a 125 acre park and recreation complex, consisting of a 90 acre golf course and 35 acres o of park facilities. Included are playgrounds, softball and soccer fields, picnic facilities, a new campground facility and a shelter house. Incorporated into the complex is a hard surfaced walking/jogging/ bicycling trail. DJ’s Diner is located on east 7th Street and open 7 days a week, so if you need some sustenance be sure to stop by.

S Sheldon had its start in 1 1873 with the building o of the Sioux City and S St. Paul Railroad. It w was named for Israel S Sheldon, a railroad p promoter, and was e early a strategic llocation on the rail for lo b businesses from as far a away as Minneapolis a and Omaha. Today, the c city occupies 4.5 miles a and is home to 5,100 rresidents. Sheldon lies at the crossroads of Iowa Highway 60 and U.S. Highway 18. In 1961, the city made headlines when it was revealed that Burnice Geiger had embezzled more than two million dollars from the Sheldon National Bank, operated by her father. The city is most known for its annual display of marigolds. Sheldon is the home of Northwest Iowa Community College and the Carnegie Library, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Sutherland was laid out in 1882. The city was named after the Duke of Sutherland. Today Sutherland encompasses 556 acres and is home to approximately 630 people. Sutherland is home to Bogenrief Studios, an internationally acclaimed stained glass studio. The studio produces amazing stained glass, and you can even take a tour by appointment. When you’re done touring the studio, head down Main Street and stop by Mugshots for some vittles before hitting the road again. O’Brien County has lots to offer, but the statewide tour isn’t over yet…join us next month when we take a closer look just a hair further north at Osceola County.

Stale gasoline is an often forgotten yet very problematic issue with stored vehicles, so check your fuel and fuel system first, before anything else. Gasoline is a very refined chemical composition, and it actually deteriorates very quickly. After a few months, the more combustible elements in gasoline will have already begun to evaporate, which can cause your bike to run rough, or possibly not at all. In addition, while sitting in a tank, gasoline can create deposits in the fuel system which can clog lines, filters, carburetors, and injectors. Due to temperature variations, condensation can also form in a gas tank, adding water to your gasoline, which can create even more severe problems. Refill your tank with high-octane fuel before you start it up, to make sure the gas running through the system is as fresh as possible.

The most common issue with bikes sitting all winter long tends to be the batteries. Most riders will have kept their battery on a trickle charger while it was stored, but if you forgot this step, you can always pick one up and charge your battery now in anticipation of that first ride of the season. If you have a lithium battery you’ll need to treat it a little differently. You should still use a trickle charger, but you’ll need one that is lithium battery-specific. Only a fool would encourage me to open my mouth during pit stops that involve food. This is not a weight loss program! My iron horse didn’t come with an IPOD or a blue tooth; there is no radio, no GPS and half the time the horn doesn’t work. My sick mind requires a lot of stimulation; my hands are busy while riding so I entertain myself by mastering a game that I call “what’s that smell”. And there is no better time than lunch, to share my expertise on the topic of rotting stench that we have rolled past during the ride. Each and every year I fine tune these skills, I just want to end one riding season with someone nicknamed “Vomit”.
I’m not fooling when I declare to uphold the integrity of the biker lifestyle by conducting myself in a manner that is unbecoming to others. Out of loyalty and respect I will do my part to ensure that all Iowa bikers maintain the freedom we currently have to continue to live our lives behind bars. For you slow readers, if I have to explain you wouldn’t understand so let’s try two simple words. Freedom Rally!
I must be a fool because I don’t have a Tall Corn Run ride card yet. This season long riding incentive is not available to the TRMI affiliates, but I can’t find anything in the rules that say a migrant from Mexico can’t participate. So I applied for a green card under an alias. I even ordered a custom made tee-shirt to wear for the prize ceremony that says, “I rode mine across the Rio Grande”.
I refuse to be fooled by allowing others to measure my dedication to the biker lifestyle. For decades I have tried to figure out, what in the hell is the deal with bikers and mileage. First off it is only a topic of discussion early in the riding season and again just before the season threatens extinction. Secondly discussions about numbers such as the size of your manhood, income, taxes or the number of miles traveled in a season is really nothing more than a test of ethics. I figure all bikers can easily pass an ethics test as long as they are not being tested while standing on one leg with their eyes closed trying to find their nose with a finger. This season I am fooling around with the idea of only keeping track of the number of gallons of gas that I have

Used-Bike Buying Checklist from the American Motorcycle Association

Check the VIN Call it into your insurance company for a real rate quote. Call it into the manufacturer for any recall info. And, if possible, call it into state authorities, to see if it has been reported stolen.
Does it work? Use the key and find out for yourself, but just as important, look for any signs of damage or excessive wear. Has it been replaced or repaired? If so, the bike may have been stolen at one time. Examine the air filter It should be clean and properly installed. Consider a zerotolerance policy. Dirt in the engine is a very bad thing. Also, is the airbox intact? Extra holes (punchouts) could be fine (as long as they are outside the filter), but ask the seller why they were performed. Check all fluid levels Discolored brake fluid, low coolant levels and dirty (or gray) oil are all bad signs. Don’t forget that some bikes have separate crankcase and transmission oil—and two dipsticks. Perform a visual once-over Look for any obvious mechanical issues—loose or missing fasteners, fluid leaks, pitting in fork tubes, rust in the

fuel tank, cable continuity, chain play, sprocket condition, cracked wiring insulation, etc. Perform another visual once-over This time, focus on cosmetics with an eye toward identifying crash signs. Look for inconsistencies in paint shade or texture. Cracks in plastic or fiberglass may be invisible from the outside but obvious from the inside. Use a flashlight and check all the cracks and crevices. Examine footpegs and sidecases for scrapes. Do the control levers appear extra shiny? Ask why and when they were replaced. Operate all controls Test the brakes, operate the clutch and take note of sufficient play, shift gears, flip the turn signals, beep the horn, etc. If a test ride is not allowed, then put the bike on the centerstand and do a “dry run.” Start it If the seller isn’t hip to a test ride, don’t get too discouraged. Many motorcycles have gone out for test rides and have not come back. But, by all means, start the bike. Put at least four of your senses to work: listen for odd noises, look for smoke, smell for burnt oil or coolant, feel for heavy vibrations. Throttle response should be crisp off idle and significantly more smoke should not accompany more throttle. Get out the toolbox At the least, check air pressures (tires, and forks and shocks, if applicable). If you’re so equipped and mechanically able, test the resistance of the electrics with a multimeter, brake disc thickness with a micrometer, and cylinder compression with a compression tester. Are extras included? Extras you want can make the deal sweeter. If the bike has aftermarket parts you don’t want, see if the owner will take them off and lower the price. Ask for any stock equipment that was replaced with aftermarket parts. And don’t forget the tool kit. “Is this the bike I want?” Often, what looks great in photographs and sounds great in website reviews falls flat in person. Even if the bike itself is sound, if the model didn’t stand up to its lofty rep, go back to the drawing board. This is your last chance. Negotiate Don’t just meet the asking price without trying to get a better deal. Every item you found wrong is a negotiating point. You may get nowhere, but you might save a few hundred bucks, too. “Let’s talk about straight pipes” Before we go any further, let me clarify that I have straight pipes on my own bike. I made this change two years ago, and I immediately noticed a difference; not only a difference in performance, but a huge difference in how well I was being observed by other motorists while riding. It was clear they could hear me much better now, and things like drivers changing lanes on top of me and pulling out in front of me dropped significantly. Some guy that thinks he knows everything about motorcycles told me that you can only hear noises so many feet away when traveling the same way as a car and blah de blah so straight pipes don’t matter. What Mr. Knows-it-All failed to take into account is that the lowest threat faced by a rider is from cars traveling the same direction. It’s the ones that are stopped and waiting to turn in front of me that make my hair stand up on end, and in that regard there is a clear advantage to making a little more noise on a bike. I’ve seen it, I’ve observed it personally, and I intend to run straight exhaust on my bike from here on out. That is, as long as I can however, and that may not be forever. So how much noise is too much? Currently, Iowa Code Section 321.436 “Mufflers, Prevention of Noise” reads: Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle while on a highway. There are certain Iowa communities that also have specific noise ordinances, Ames and Clear Lake are two of them. There may be others, but this is what our research has determined so far. Please look at the photo I’ve posted for this column. This is a real sign, and we need to pay attention to what’s happening to noise statutes in this state. These signs can now be found posted in several places in Clear Lake, Iowa. Some guy ran for City Council a few years ago and based his entire campaign on motorcycle noise. Nobody took him very seriously at the time, and he didn’t win. But nobody’s laughing now, because his campaign did raise enough of a ruckus that a new noise ordinance went into effect. Here’s how the code reads in Clear Lake now: Clear Lake Code of Ordinance 40.03 Disorderly Conduct. No person shall do any of the following: Noise. Make loud and raucous noise in the vicinity of any residence or public building which causes unreasonable distress to the occupants thereof.
Clear Lake Code of Ordinance 62.05 Quiet Zones. Whenever authorized signs are erected indicating a quiet zone, no person within any such zone shall sound the horn or other warning device of such vehicle except in an emergency. And also in Ames: Ames, Iowa – Noise Ordinance The maximum level for the hours of 7 a.m. - Midnight is 60 decibels and for the hours of Midnight to 7 a.m. Is 55 decibels. This sound will be measured at the edge of the city street or alley right of way. So if I’m reading this right, as it stands straight exhaust in Iowa is technically illegal and is currently being tolerated by law enforcement and Iowa communities. So I’ll repeat the saying I’ve used over and over in this column; there is a time and a place for being a hot dog on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, most of the show-offs seem inclined to make the most noise and practice the worst riding habits in the worst places possible. We sit at intersections and rack the pipes for no good reason. We do “flybys” past everybody at Bike Night. We rip through neighborhoods at 2:00 a.m. after last call for no good reason. I say “we” because I’ve done all of the above and probably a lot worse in my riding career, but I’d like to think I’ve gotten a bit wiser with age. My friends might argue that point, but let’s continue our discussion anyhow. Maybe one of those people you rip past is a State Legislator or a motorcycle insurance underwriter, maybe a town Councilman, or just a fed up citizen. But it’s happened enough that laws are changing and we need to pay attention right now. When you have a state with as much open space as Iowa, you’ve got all the room in the world to let the dogs out on your bike. If you want to ride fast and make a big racket with your drag pipes, knock yourself out when you’re out in a rural area. The cows don’t mind, and the hogs appreciate the company. But please try to keep a level head when you ride through town, lest we all lose the right to have our straight pipes “tolerated”. For example, I can ride my chopper with straight pipes in such a manner that it sounds about like any other motorcycle. It’s louder at start up (so much so that my neighbor had to re-caulk his windows), but once underway, if you don’t crack the throttle, it doesn’t blast out the pipes. Funny how that works. So I’ve voluntarily begun riding in a way that disturbs fewer people when I can. I think that is an important habit, and one more Iowa riders should begin practicing. Because the ways things are looking, the actions of a few are affecting the many once again, and the winds of change are upon us riders in Iowa. While we were at Loess Hills Harley-Davidson one afternoon, we ran across a cat from Logan, Billy Hoss, aka Bloodhound Billy was shopping around with his two little boys. One of his boys Levi got a photo in the magazine last month sitting atop a black Softail Slim holding his dad’s Tall Corn Run card. Bloodhound has a couple of bikers in training! Billy served our fine country in the United Stated Army from 2009-2013. He was in A company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He attained the rank of E-5, Sergeant. During his active duty years he served in Fort Benning, Georgia for Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training. Another aspect of Billy’s love for riding is making handmade leather items. He has a leather craft business called Bloodhound Leather, and he makes custom American handmade leather products. My New Favorite Biker Bar I am not a big fan of trailering a motorcycle. I have always been that way, and probably always will be, but occasionally it seems to be a necessary evil. One of the reasons for this is that I just simply enjoy riding, and don’t have a lot of need to load a perfectly good motorcycle onto a trailer. There are a few exceptions such as if one experiences a breakdown, buys a used bike that is not tested as road worthy, or need to simply get a bike from point A to point B in times of winter or inclement weather. This past winter I have had more than a few occasions to haul a bike, one that will not
be ridden as it is the grand prize for the 2016 Tall Corn Run. We sure as hell wanted to show off this bike, and did not want it to get dirty, so an enclosed trailer was the only option during the cold winter months. The grand prize is a 2016 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim provided by Okoboji HarleyDavidson. One of the other prizes for the Tall Corn Run is a Wells Cargo 6X10 trailer provided by Fenders Cycle in Des Moines. You may have seen them at shows this winter, or will probably see them at events this riding season. So, I guess we had a valid reason to put a bike into a trailer this winter. With the need to haul, I just cringed at the fact of getting the Softail loaded up and then unloaded to show off at events, only to turn around and load it, strap it down, check the straps, and get it home safely. Wheel chocks and tie down straps are one option. Not one that I care much for, but it does work. For wheel chocks there are numerous options from inexpensive antlers to high dollar chocks that will do almost everything except scratch your bum. They all must be mounted some way to the floor of the trailer or truck, and that requires drilling holes and bolting them to the floor. Then you have a need for some type of tie down system. The bike will still need to be secured and tied in. If your trailer does not have floor tie down d-rings, they will need to be purchased and you will need to drill more holes to mount them. After the wheel chock and tie down points are taken care of you will need a couple pairs of tie down straps. These will run you anywhere from $15 to $75 dollars depending upon brand and size and such. Then you may still need some soft ties to avoid damage to the mounting points on the motorcycle. All of these things can get expensive, and very time consuming to utilize when someone does need to haul a bike. Also, drilling numerous

holes in your trailer floor and having to mount the wheel chock and tie down points or tracks was not a very inviting idea. I simply wanted another option. When I was in Griswold getting some tires on my pickup at Sandbothe Firestone, I got to talking with Tom after I saw they were a dealer for what was called a Biker Bar. Tom and Robyn like to take trips in their RV and pull a trailer with their bagger inside. Tom talked about the same frustration of loading and unloading a bike and he searched for other ways and found the Biker Bar. He bought one and started using it and was so impressed that they became a dealer for the Biker Bar at their tire shop. In a matter of a couple of minutes he can have a bike either loaded ready to haul, or unloaded and ready to ride. Then we talked more about it and realized that no tie downs are needed, and only a couple of holes need to be drilled into the floor of the trailer. That is right, NO TIE DOWNS! That is something that caught my eye for sure.

Not that I did not believe Tom or his personal testimonial, but I always do a lot of research before buying things. I found the website ditchthestraps.com, and that links to BW Trailer Hitches out of Humboldt, Kansas. I found it interesting that right in the website was mention of getting rid of those pesky straps. This American made product is so simple it is awesome. The base can be mounted in a trailer in about a half an hour after drilling a couple of holes and with common hand tools. A bar clamps to the frame of the motorcycle that has neoprene lined clamps s to prevent any damage to frame and finish. After the bar is clamped onto the frame, and the base is mounted into the trailer and the height is adjusted as needed, simply pull the bike in, and trip the safety catches on each side and away you go. To unload, trip the safety catches on either side with your foot, and back out of the trailer, unscrew the bar off the frame and away you go on the road. Best part about this is that without straps and tie downs, one person can load and unload a motorcycle. No need for an extra person to support the bike while strapping or unstrapping. them over and inflate them to the proper level. If you have an air suspension it’s a good time to check that too. Finally, don’t forget to check that your brakes all work smoothly. Make sure the lights all work. Check all of the fluids; even engine oil degrades with age. A clean oil change and filter never hurts. Make sure your drive chain or belt is properly located and adjusted. Just to make sure that I’ve looked everything over I like to give it a fresh wash.
Spring Ride? Anyone notice the weather has been improving? Where I live it was 72’F last Saturday in Iowa. It’s time to get that motorcycle out of the shed or wherever you keep it, and get it ready to ride. If all you did last fall was to pull in and put the kickstand down you may have some work to do. It takes less time to put in the proper effort to prepare your ride for storage than to get an un-prepped bike ready to ride.
Now that you’re ready to ride, keep in mind the fact that spring riding brings new challenges. The first and most often encountered issue is sand, gravel and salt. Over the winter the state and cities dump tons of it. Until we’ve had some good hard spring rains you will encounter piles of debris in nearly every intersection, in town and out. Be careful and keep an eye out for it.
Another big hazard is potholes. Millions are produced each year. Each year’s freeze/thaw cycles create new ones and reopen old ones. Also, as temperatures increase, our chances of encountering animals on the road also increase. You’ll also want to watch out for flooding. Even if the flood is over, branches and other debris may still be blocking your path. Also keep in mind that First issue is fuel. I was tired of hearing the motorcycles zoom past my house that last weekend in February. Tired of it because I still didn’t have my ride ready for the season and was cursing myself internally for it. I got caught unprepared for the unusually warm weather and wasn’t just going to sit around & beat myself up for it. So I packed up the camera & the ol man into the cage and headed north to Monticello for the 47th Annual Rod & Custom Car & Bike Show. I’d never attended before, but have heard great things about the show for countless years and thought I’d take this opportunity to check it out for myself. I’ve often heard it billed as one of the longest running shows in the Midwest featuring a grand selection of the hottest street rods, custom cars, street machines, pickups, race cars and motorcycles in the area.
As I mentioned earlier, this is a smaller scale show than most are these days and it was wonderful to be able to take time to really look deeply at the machines without feeling rushed to see it all. The only vendors were all show sponsors, so no need to wander through aisles of candle melts or plastic container vendors which proved to be a bonus to my pocketbook. Miss Iowa 2015, Taylor Even, was hanging out at the Hupy & Abraham table on Saturday, making sure that every attendee got plenty of “watch for motorcycles” bumper stickers and if anyone has the looks to catch peoples eye, it’s definitely that gal! This show offers two fun filled days of family entertainment and I am kicking myself in the butt for not going in years past, as I can only imagine what amazingness I’ve missed over the years. The show is pulled together by brothers Tom & Galen Muller, who took it over from their father who started the show in 1970. These two fellas scour the Midwest, logging numerous miles on their shoes hand selecting and inviting the best of the best in the area to their show. They never ask the same bike or car to be there, so every year there’s something new to peruse and this year proved a spectacular showing of everything from a vintage Norton to a custom motorcycle powered by twin V8 car motors (that thing was longer than most cars these days). All be it a smaller show than most, they packed in a wide variety of beautiful machines into the Berndes Center. This year’s featured guest was Erik Estrada, who played Ponch on the 80’s TV show CHIPs. Mr. Estrada had a grand time laughing and talking with every person who endured the long line just to meet him. Last year Tom Wopat, Bo Duke from the Dukes of Hazard, was on hand and only the Muller brothers know who will be on the roster for next year. Also hanging out was Poppa Balloon, creating the most intricate balloon animals I’d ever witnessed… I mean really, who’s ever watched a balloon Peacock come to life?
