Riding season seems to have started months ago for many due to the favorable weather we had the past few months, but usually April marks the official start of riding season. Even though some have been out already, always be extra cautious the first part of the year as the cages are not used to seeing motorcycles on the roadways yet. On top of watching for cars, keep your eyes out for road debris, farm implements, wild life, and the pot holes that seem to get deeper than the Grand Canyon over the winter. Get them out, check them over, and hit the roads, but be safe doing so.

Our part is to humble ourselves and admit that we need Jesus and repent from our sinful, self-centered ways. In a similar vein, President Trump is trying to fix America. He says he wants to make America great again. I think everyone can agree that we have some serious problems, but no one can agree on what the correct fix is. Should we start with crime, education, and gun rights? Or do we focus on the justice system, illegal immigration and the lack of jobs that pay a decent wage? And don’t forget the health insurance problem and the fact that everyone’s taxes are rising – along with an unprecedented national debt. It’s all intertwined in some way and finding the right way to make America great again seems like an impossible goal. However, just like the defective battery was at the bottom of my friend’s many bike problems, there is something specific at the bottom of America’s many problems. It’s our broken relationship with God which leads us into sinful, self-centered behavior over and over. Sin is no respecter of persons. It hits the high and the low. Know why the powerful legislators toss their constituents aside for a bribe? Sin. Know why the young man from the projects gets involved in criminal activity? Sin. We are heading full bore into spring in Iowa, and that means riding season is upon us. The need to head out on two wheels after the long winter is on everybody’s mind. For most bikers the goal at this point is to get out and about, regardless of where you are going, but if you are looking for ideas or maybe a little direction then you have come to the right place. So if you are ready to get out and spend sometime in the wind, then hold on to your helmet and give your wrist a twist while we take a peek at some of the best road trips in Iowa.
Forest and Missouri Valley may be exactly what you’re looking for. The park is also known as Preparation Canyon, and the views are breathtaking. The park is in Pisgah and Highway 183 is a nice ride between the park and Missouri Valley. If you have never been to Preparation Canyon, make sure you plan to take a little extra time and appreciate the views. They go on for miles, and in some areas you can see a full 360 degrees around you. These hills can be awfully hard to ride away from if you are the outdoorsy type. This stretch of highway gets busy around the Labor Day and Memorial Day holidays, so if solitude is your thing, please plan accordingly.
Iowa stretches from the Missouri to the Mississippi River, and between the two you will find everything from sleepy rural areas to bustling cities. The best part is that anywhere you choose to travel in our great state you will find beautiful scenery and plentiful curves and hills sure to scratch your winter riding itch.
Eastern Iowa also has a nice day trip if you find yourself in the area. Just north of Cedar Rapids is a great run that has been dubbed the Nuke Plant Corners. This ride takes a loop through the area and boasts some great turns and curves that are a lot of fun to ride at higher speeds. From New Rider to Graybeard It is no miracle how older motorcycle riders have been able to grow old. Well, maybe it’s a few small miracles, but that’s a whole different story. I had wanted a bike my entire life, and finally got my first bike at 25 years old. I grew up watching bike building shows ever since being a young kid and also collecting books with motorcycle artwork with anyone from the biker world like Arlen Ness to Orange County Choppers. The desire was there to one day own my own bike. In the spring of 2016 I bought a 2008 Kawasaki Versys 650. Yes, I know, not anywhere near a custom chopper, work of art, or the type of bike that I wanted to ride forever, but it was a good starter bike. With help from a coworker, I learned how to ride and get my motorcycle license. I had never ridden any sort of motor bike before so the lessons were very helpful, especially from a guy who used to race them. Not that I wanted to learn how to race, just riding on the street was good enough for me. Now that I had passed my test and gotten my license, I was prepared to ride anywhere, or so I thought. I rode for about a month around town and out to nearby towns by myself. This was peaceful and very enjoyable, but I felt like I was missing something. I wasn’t experiencing the biker camaraderie that I had only seen on TV and read about in books and magazines. This was something that I
longed for and part of the reason I wanted to get into riding motorcycles. There was a local bike night coming up in Harlan. Roar Into Harlan had their opening night of the year where everyone who wants to rides in as a group. Let me tell you first hand, I sure looked and felt out of place on my Versys. Almost everyone else riding in to the bike night had a Harley. Talk about feeling like a loner. It wasn’t until later that I learned it doesn’t matter what you ride, as long as you are on two or three wheels and your knees are in the breeze.
It was at that bike night that I had met and talked to a quite a few new people. One of the other riders that I ran into that night was Vernon Schwarte. He answered any questions I had and boy did I have a lot of them. Just getting into this life, I was excited, but needed some more exposure to the life. There was a poker run coming up and he invited me to ride along with their group. It was on that poker run that I learned so many more things about riding. One of the big lessons that day was about riding in a group. I had no idea that riders in front of you signaled for hazards in the roadway to riders behind. That is a pretty handy thing to do and much appreciated for those following. One other thing that I leaned that day is when in a group, keep the group tight or otherwise cars and trucks might try to cut in between the bikes in a group. There was so much knowledge shared that day it was amazing. At every stop during the poker run I got to hear so many stories about bikes people had or have owned, about rides, about riders, about the life. Stories about close calls on the road, and stories about beautiful scenery and awesome people all over the states met on two wheels. One might think those are just stories, but if you really listen, you’re going to hear not only lessons about riding, but lessons about life. It doesn’t matter if you get your first bike at 16 or if you get it at 60. Listen, ride, learn, and respect those that have come before us. Do your best to fit into the lifestyle of being a rider, a biker, and an enthusiast. Never be afraid to ride with a group and ask questions. It is a wonderful way to learn about the life and about riding. They might give you grief about a number of things, but that is part of the deal. Also keep in mind that they didn’t all start out on a Harley and they didn’t know it all in the beginning either. Experience all comes with time, and not just riding, but also the camaraderie. Just remember never think you know it all, because that’s when you will find out you don’t. Pay attention to some of the old riders and glean knowledge from them, and then maybe you can live to be an old graybeard biker as well. Ryan Motes

99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 17 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa.
Shelby County This month we are perusing all that Shelby County has to offer. I grew up in Shelby County, so having over 40 years to travel around certainly helps a person know where to find cool things to see and do. There are approximately 12,000 people occupying the 591 square miles that comprise Shelby County. The county was formed on January 15, 1851 and was named after General Isaac Shelby who was a hero in the American Revolutionary War and also became the first Governor of Kentucky. Early settling in Shelby County began in 1848 in Galland’s Grove. On February 4, 1855, Shelbyville was designated the county seat and in April of 1859, the seat was moved to Harlan, which happens to be my home town. One year later the first courthouse was erected followed by a second in 1875. In 1892, the construction of the present courthouse began, this time of stone and three stories high. The construction was completed in 1893 and dedicated on September 14th and serves as the courthouse to the present day. We will start our tour in the county seat of Harlan. Harlan is well known for being home to schools that dominate in sports and music competitions. But Harlan is also home to the likes of Mary Lincoln Beckwith whose great-grandfather was President Abraham Lincoln, Washington Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff, and last but certainly not least, Tiny Lund, NASCAR driver and 1963 winner of the Daytona 500. If you find yourself in Harlan on the 3rd Thursday of the month May-September be sure to check out the local bike nite on the square, Roar Into Harlan. get drinks and vittles at Goozeman’s Westside, Pizza Ranch, or Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant. Also located in downtown Harlan is Creative Concepts Collision Center, supporter of the Tall Corn Run, and damn good place to get your car or bike a makeover! From Harlan we headed up Old Hwy 59 (Linden Road) past the burg of Kirkman to the small town of Irwin. In Irwin you will find the finest in hometown butcher shops, the Irwin Locker. There is no better place to get amazing ribeyes and T-bones, and we have found that among the many delicious items offered by the locker, one thing our family can’t live without is their rullepolse…If you have never eaten rullepolse, you haven’t lived. Simply put, it is a spiced meat roll that is sliced paper thin before serving. Make your way to Irwin and get you some! Across the road to the East is O’Hara’s Steakhouse if you need some delicious sustenance or simply to wet your whistle. From Irwin we jumped on F 24 and headed back to Linden Road, where we headed north to Defiance. Defiance is a small town of about 280 people that was founded in 1882 when the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul railroad made its way through the area. Defiance’s claim to fame lies in a former resident being on the TV show “The Bachelorette” and to the much publicized murder of resident Scott Shanahan in 2002. While there not a lot of things to do in Defiance, there is a place just off of Hwy 59 to fuel up and grab a drink if you need to before heading on your way. Our next stop was in Earling. Earling is home to around 400 residents, and has two establishments on the main drag that offer food and drink for the weary traveler. The town was platted in 1882 by the Milwaukee Land C Co m any mp Company and wa was fi irsst first

known as Marthan. However, there was already a town called Marathon in Iowa, so the name of the town was soon changed to Earling, in honor of Albert J. Earling who at the time was a superintendent of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway. Earling is well known in paranormal circles for being the site of the 1928 exorcism of Emma Schmidt. So if the paranormal is your forte, take a look at the history here as it is an interesting part of local culture. From Earling we decided to head down M-16 past Westphalia, home to Little Angel’s Barbeque Sauce and the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse is located at 405 Duren Street and offers food and drink Monday through Saturday. They also have wing Mondays, but Wednesdays are my favorite day to visit, as the tacos are to die for! At Westphalia we hopped onto F 32 and headed west towards Panama, home of Norma Jean’s (a prior Will Ride to Eat subject) and stopped in for a quick drink. Friendly staff and great food at Norma Jean’s make Panama a worthwhile stop when you’re out and about. Now we grabbed state Highway 191 South to Portsmouth. In Portsmouth you will find The Rocket, a small town bar filled with downhome people who have all the time you can spare to shoot the breeze with passersby. A short jaunt on Hwy 44 East allowed us to hook back up with M 16 and we made our way as far South as the county would allow, past the tiny plat of Tennant into Shelby, which consequently lays only half in Shelby County. Shelby has an unusual attraction… a time capsule. The “Centennial Time Capsule” will be opened on July 16, 2020. It is located in Shelby Park near the intersection of Center Street and West Street. The capsule was sealed on July 16, 1970 as part of Shelby’s centennial celebration. Newts Place on the main drag has cold libations, and if you are looking for vittles, Stone Arch Pizza at 514 East Street has some pretty amazing wood fired pizza. By this time in the day we wanted to head a little closer to home, so we jumped on the big road and screamed down I 80 to the Elk Horn exit. Flying North towards home we passed through Elk Horn. Elk Horn is home to the Tivoli Festival each year on Memorial Day weekend. There is always lots of fun to be had and celebrating Danish Heritage in down town Elk Horn. You can also find Larsen’s Pub on the main drag for cold drinks and hot food….try the tenderloin, you won’t be disappointed! If you aren’t a sandwich fan, just up the road is the Flour Mill, serving pizza, pasta, and salads. Either establishment has adult offerings of the liquid variety, so feel free to pick your poison, and tell them that TRMI sent you! Brakes: Ever ridden with someone who at every stop sign, their bike squeals like a stuck hog? A pretty inexpensive fix for something that could save your life when that person, who didn’t see you, turns in front of you. Those brakes can squeal all they want, but that won’t save you if you can’t stop. Make sure your ride is in good mechanical shape. Nothing ruins a great day of riding more than breaking down on the side of the road, or at one of the stops on an organized run. Rode with a guy once who needed us to push start him at every stop. Not a big issue if it happens unexpectedly at a stop, but this guy knew about it before he ever left home that day. I guess he figured he could rely on the “leave no man behind” rule in the biker community. Of course we helped him, but again, how stupid do you have to be?

April brings us a great new riding season, and also west central Iowa patriot and rider, Tyson Kuehn. Tyson also goes by the moniker Hawkeye, and is a member of the Second Brigade Motorcycle Club; which is a National Club for Veteran and Non-Veteran members. He served the grand old United States of America in the USAF Air National Guard. He attained the rank of E-7 Master Sergeant by the time he retired from the service in 2013. He completed 20 years of service in the Air National Guard during his watch during 1993-2013. Hawkeye served during multiple deployments in the Middle East in locations of Kuwait, Turkey, and Quatar, as well as serving in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Guam, and Japan.. He worked as an Aircraft Maintenance intenance Specialist in the Air National Guard. He was a Aerial Refueling Tanker Crew Chief working with F-16s and KC-135R aircraft. Since starting out on the mini and dirt bikes, Hawkeye has never been without two wheels. He ppicked up his latest ride at Dillon Bros Harley-Davidson in Omaha. He chose this bbike because it was the colors that he wanted and it was already loaded to the hilt with goodies. The only thing he may change would be
to upgrade the exhaust to a 2-Into1 system system, probably a Thund Thunderheader. W When asked if hhe has any rides or events that he is planning on attending oor hitting up, he stated he will be attending club events in other states and to ride aas much as he possibly can. Along with his fellow club members, he has many friends that ride, m most of them in fact. Hawkeye states that he is eextremely proud to have served the greatest count country in the world. He states that the United States of America is the greatest country hands down down, and he should know, as he has served and been tto a bunch of them! Hawkeye grew up on bikes as a kid. He cut his teeth on mini-bikes and dirt bikes. He graduated to the street bike world with a 1978 Honda 750-Four, then up to a 1982 then 1983 Goldwing GL1100 Interstates. Since the calendar makers choose to ignore bikers, I am making an official declaration. I have spent the last 4 months of my life preparing for this declaration, so here it goes. April is not just for showers that make flowers and fools, it is also the official kick off to the 2017 Riding Season. There you have it fellow riders of Iowa, let the 2017 riding season begin.
I feel like the bike is ready for the upcoming miles it will need to endure. I have spent the last 2 months making sure that my ass still fits in the seat while I practiced humming engine noises. I have meticulously inflated the tires, I have topped off all the lubricants, and I have tested and retested all the lights and blinkers while perfecting my gear
slamming harmony. I even spent some time making sure So now that the riding season is officially underway, that all the nuts and bolts were snugged up tight and what are we going to do with ourselves? I should have figured that out before leaving on the ride. Shortly after that lesson was learned, I realized how quickly the temperature drops this time of the year and the gloves that I desperately needed were not in the coat pocket where I thought they should be. Then again, my cherry popping excitement might have pushed me just a little too far from home. It was a real wakeup call when I realized how difficult it is to operate a motorcycle when your hands are frozen to the handlebars. And lastly I hate to even admit this one, but don’t’ forget the battery tender. It took about 3 feet before I realized, it will unplug its self. Next time, I’m plugging that damn thing into an extension cord so I have a little more warning. It is official the 2017 Riding Season is finally here. Ride Safe, Ride Smart and don’t forget to sign up for the TRMI Tall Corn Ride. You can’t win if you don’t play, unless of course you enjoy being called a loser by your riding buddies. “A tale of two crimes” This month we’re going to talk about some crimes and the relative punishment that is assigned to each of them. I’m going to warn you that although the column contains political content, it is not intended to be a political commentary or endorsement. If you’re not confused yet, I’m just not trying hard enough, so let’s just move on to the issuesFirst let’s meet one Rosa Maria Ortega, a current resident of Tarrant County, TX. That’s her in the photo below. She’s the most unlikely of political figures you’re going to read about this month, I guarantee it. She’s a Republican Green Card Holder. In other words, she faithfully votes for the party most likely to deport her, but this is a free county, so you knock yourself out Rosie. Where it gets complicated is the fact when she applied for the right to vote in Texas more than ten years ago, she filled out her voter registration card incorrectly according to Texas Election officials. On her voter application form, there were two choices “citizen”, and “non-citizen”. Using the information available to her at the time, which was her Green Card, she chose to mark “citizen” on the voter form. This was because her Green Card states her legal status as “legal resident”. She’s voted Republican five times since being registered this way. Are you bored with rules and legal mumbo jumbo yet? Wonder just where the hell I’m going with this? Well I’ll tell you. Because she checked the wrong box ten years ago, she voted illegally in the eyes of the Texas Election officials. Oooo, bore me some more right? Well you won’t be bored when you hear her punishment. She’s been sentenced to eight years in prison for these 5 votes, and then is going to be deported to Mexico when her sentence is served. Read that again: 8 years in Prison, then deported from the USA for checking the wrong box. So what is the punishment for cutting down a motorcyclist and ending their life? Often times it is just a traffic ticket for Failure to Yield, which with court costs and everything added in, comes out to less than $300.00. So to recap, casting a vote, which in a big state like Texas affects the outcome by 1/26 millionth, will get you sentenced to prison and deported. Ending the life of a fellow American while too distracted or ignorant to pay heed to our right of way, $300 with enough left over for Arby’s. You get caught with a plant in your pocket; you lose your driver’s license. Which astonishes me because if anything it makes the driver go slower and likely to eventually just end up at a drive-thru for munchies. This is just isn’t right. These crimes don’t fit the punishment. We are worth more than a box on a form aren’t we? If you feel this way then speak up. You know who you voted for, tell them how you feel about this.
(Motorcycle Cops were exempt for example). Now why do you think they targeted just motorcycles, and why did they pick those hours? Well aside from the fact that most people sleep during those hours, the other obvious thing that’s going on during those hours is motorcycles coming home from bars, or going from bar to bar. And we all know what that sounds like. We all go out of our way to ride respectfully, nobody racks their pipes at an intersection, and absolutely nobody rips through the gears going through neighborhoods at 1 o’clock in the morning. Well if nobody does that, then why was this proposed law almost passed? Because out of all those nobodies, somebody is making a lot of noise. I live close to a factory that runs 24/7. One of the guys there works the graveyard shift and parks a sweet Victory bagger with aftermarket pipes right outside. He parks it next to a steel sided building. Essentially, he’s got the recipe there to wake up the entire neighborhood if he felt like it. But you know what, he doesn’t. He warms his engine up for a couple minutes, and then he rides down 3rd St. like a boss, quiet as you please. I’m actually going to leave him a thank you note this spring, and tell him how much I appreciate his manners, and possibly a copy of this article. We can all do it, just like he can. And the time to do it is upon us. As I’ve said many a time before, there’s miles of open country in Iowa, if you want to let the dogs out when you’re in the sticks, go for it, I’m probably out there doing the same thing. But if the only time you want to ride like that is in front of the general public, then you’re nothing but a show off that’s going to ruin it for the rest of us. So remember your life should be worth more than a check mark on a sheet of paper, and remember to tell your legislators that specific thing this year. Heck, jump on your bike and ride down there and talk to them. And please remember to ride respectfully when you leave the parking lot at the state capitol. That building echoes like a son of a bitch. Now onto another topic I get on my soapbox about frequently in this column, respectful riding in public areas. What brings me to this topic is recent proposed legislation from the city of Quincy, Illinois. Quincy is pretty close to Iowa and our own motorcycle culture. Yes, it’s in another state but just across a bridge. The city of Quincy just narrowly defeated a proposal to outright ban the use of motorcycles from midnight to 5 a.m. unless the bike was being used for professional purposes 40 - TRMI APRIL 2017

killer queso dip. We ordered a variety of different dishes amongst the four of us, but I favored one of my favorites, the Carne Asada. The grilled beef was lean, perfectly grilled and juicy. The grilled onions, pico, and guacamole meld perfectly with the rice and beans served as sides. Fresh soft flour tortillas round out this dish with contradictory feelings of wanting more, yet being more than one can eat at a single meal. It is so tasty that I wanted to keep eating, but had more than I

could eat. Melanie got the Carne De Res. Also served with the traditional sides, but this mix of tender beef, onions, and peppers is a world apart from the traditional fajita combo of the same ingredients. Tortillas come with the dish, but with or without them, the delicious sirloin and veggies is sure to please even the pickiest diner. Tina chose a monstrous burrito, which boasts availability in either the chicken, beef, or shredded beef varieties…any of these options will melt in your mouth with a perfect meat to cheese ratio, and topped with a delicious red sauce. Jack opted for a tamale and enchilada combo, both of which were fresh and hot. If you are a tamale fan, be sure to give the ones at Mi Casa a try, you won’t be disappointed. If you aren’t a fan of foods from south of the border, they do have offerings your every-day gringo can appreciate. Whether you prefer steak or a burger and fries, the Mi Casa crew can help you with that as well.
While running around Shelby County for the 99 County article, we got a little hungry and needed to find some place for beans. It only seemed fitting to go see Ulises and his crew at Mi Casa in Harlan. They have recently moved locations from the west side of the square to a spot northeast off the square, and it was a great move for them. A completely remodeled and much larger and nicer space make for a great place to gather for food and drink no matter what size the crowd. We happened to be running around that night with Jack and Tina and had to get started with a margarita. They sure hit the spot, and our usual order of the margarita on the rocks with good tequila was a great choice. Their margarita is a great mix of tequila, sweetness, saltiness, and the perfect amount of citrus acidity. Different folks have different tastes they prefer for margaritas, but these are for sure one of our favorites. If margaritas are not your thing, they also have a full bar and a great selection of non-alcoholic beverages.

S.T.E.A.M. Every spring bikers from the Motorcycle Right Movement descends on a mid-west town to come together for Heartland S.T.E.A.M (Seminar to Educate and Motivate). Heartland S.T.E.A.M. is a regional seminar for the officers and members of the heartland region Motorcycle Rights Organizations (MRO), the AMA, MRF and the COC. The heartland region consists of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and St. Croix Valley Riders. Its purpose is to help educate states MRO officers and members how to work with and be leaders in the political arena. The seminar also brings together the various states MRO’s to encourage discussion on political issues pertaining to motorcycle rights. These discussions provide insight to those states fighting those issues in their legislatures and gives fresh ideas and the motivation to deal with them. Timing is determined by a general consensus of the attending state coordinators and directors. Each year a different state takes its turn hosting the seminar. The states are asked to each teach a workshop if possible. Abate of Iowa will be hosting the 28th year of Heartland S.T.E.A.M. Freedom fighters from across the heartland states will be heading to Sioux City, Iowa in early April to come together to discuss problems that face the motorcycle community in each of these states and across the country. They will listen to speakers on issues that are facing the freedoms of the motorcycle community like motorcycle profiling. There are also break out meetings on different topics to learn things that they can take back to their own State to help keep the motorcycle community riding free. Topics included are public relations, knowing your insurance, new items in rider education and a Smart trainer which is a motorcycle simulator.
