So do we finally get to kick off oour ur rriding idin id din i g season in April? I know that it has to end eventually, lly ly, y, and hopefully the lag between writing, getting to layout, getting ng to print, and getting the magazines distributed that Ma Nature will have straightened out and at least a little riding can be happening. Hope it is more than simple wishful thinking. It will be really nice to have a mild spring and a nice gradual transition into summer. We can at least hope at this point right? We cannot change it, so just hope for the best.

Another thing that we would ask is that riders support events that are going on. There is so much work that goes into these rallies, runs, swap meets, bike shows, As of late we have had quite a few folks sending messages bike nights, and all events, so show your support and attend or asking us at shows about what is happening with the if at all possible. We were out at the family cabin a while back with various and sundry family members for a cook-out / shooting party / dirt bike session when one of our boys unloaded an incredibly tiny 4-wheeler from the back of his vehicle. It was all pink with shiny silver gee-gaws on it and looked like it was electric with some kind of leash on attached. “What’s that?” I asked. “Just watch,” he grinned back at me. “Hey, Bean!” he yelled. “Do you want to ride?” His 2 ½ year old daughter (known as The Bean) spotted her dad with the 4-wheeler and in a flash, she was by our side. Dad fitted her with a helmet, she climbed up on the 4-wheeler and off she went with him running behind, holding the leash. Our daughterin-law looked up, laughing. “That leash is for when Beaner gets going faster than we want her to. He just pulls on it and the motor stops,” she explained. The Bean had her dad running full tilt and even I had a little heart palpitation when she headed for the ditch. If you hit it just right you can catch some air. But she knew exactly what she was doing and roared up to it, gunning it at just the right point to get the maximum lift. We could hear her laughing excitedly all the way back where we were standing, even through her full-faced helmet.

Here’s what John 3:18 has to say about it: “But anyone who does not believe in Jesus has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.” Make things pretty clear, doesn’t it? There is no middle ground. We’re all born condemned un-believers because of Adam’s sin long ago, which separated him from a healthy relationship with God. That same separation became part of every human‘s spiritual DNA. But the good news is that 6 - TRMI APRIL 2019

When all is said and done it still boils down to brotherhood, whether you agree or disagree, you maintain a mutual respect. We recently l spent my bi birthday hd weekend k d attending di the h 40thh annual Lincoln Highway National Antique Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet put on by our friends in the Omaha Chapter of the AMCA. Now it never seems to fail that winter rears its ugly head on the weekend of this meet, but we always manage to find our way to Fremont one way or another. Why, you may ask…well the answer is simple. The folks that work so hard to put on this February meet do one hell of a job. It is usually one of our first opportunities to reconnect with the biker community after the long, cold winter. People are itching to get out and about by the end of February, and what better way to feel closer to spring than to revel in all things two-wheeled?

So, you may be asking yourself, what does this judging actually entail? Well with the help of the AMCA website, I located the following information: “The judging program offers an opportunity for the Club to recognize the efforts of members to preserve significant pieces of motorcycling history. Unlike many motorcycle shows, the AMCA does not judge machines against each other to pick a winner. Instead, antique motorcycles (those 35 years old or older), are judged against the way they would have appeared when they were first delivered to the dealer decades ago. Each motorcycle starts with a perfect 100 points, and points are deducted for incorrect components ranging from parts to paint.”

The meet is one of the only places in the Midwest to get your antique bike judged by the AMCA, and trust me; the judging process can be a real nail biter. We took some time to listen in on a little judging this year and I can’t imagine how nerve racking it can be for the owners. The judges are meticulous in their trade, and complete the judging process according to their individual areas of expertise. Not that the occasional disagreement over things like the period correct

The judging occurs in two comprehensive categories… either restored or original. Restored motorcycles include any bikes that have been painstakingly returned to their original manifestations. The second category includes the rare machines that have somehow managed to survive the years intact (including original paint). Categories are then divided by decade from oldest to newest motorcycles eligible for judging.

After judging occurs, the motorcycles can pass through four award categories, each with more rigorous requirements. The four award categories are as follows: Junior Second, Junior First, Senior, and Winner’s Circle. But don’t worry, once a machine has earned Winner’s Circle status, owners can continue to earn what is called the Winner’s Circle Preservation Award by maintaining the bike’s award winning condition and entering it for judging at ensuing meets.

across the country, and is always looking for new faces…. and old bikes, to join in the fun. If you have a contact at a local chapter, give them a call, visit the website at antiquemotorcycle.org, or contact Cornerstone Registration, Ltd. Toll-free at 866-427-7583 to become a member. If you enjoy brotherhood, beautiful old bikes, and wouldn’t mind a little recognition for preserving motorcycling’s past, then the AMCA is for you. And next year if you are in the Fremont area, be sure to stop by and see what the Omaha Chapter does in our area!

Does any of this sound like something you’d like to try out? If so, getting involved in a local AMCA chapter is pretty darn simple. The AMCA has over 11,000 members

As we go into A April the weather should be getting nicer and we will be putting putt miles on our moto motorcycles. The State legislature legi should be windin winding down by this thi time, ti but b we still got a few things on the Federal level and one of them is Motorcycle profiling. State Motorcycle right groups like ABATE are working with the MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation in D.C.) to stop Motorcycle profiling will introduce H.Res. 318 & S.Res.154. The MRF has worked with federal lawmakers in getting a national bipartisan and bicameral resolutions introduced to address this critical issue. These resolutions were introduced to address concerns over the profiling of motorcyclists. Though these are resolutions, and not a bill they promote public awareness of motorcycle profiling and encourage collaboration and communication between law enforcement and the motorcycle community. Further, the legislation urges state law enforcement officials to condemn motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials.

any traffic infractions. Instances were reported in all 50 states and it shows a growing national trend when compared with similar surveys conducted since 2014. The stereotype of the “criminal biker” has been exacerbated by television shows such as “Sons of Anarchy” that depict motorcyclists as dangerous and unlawful citizens, and our communities are suffering the consequences. We ask if you are out riding this summer and you think you are profiled we want you to do a few things: please contact us at ABATE so we know and also go to http://www.motorcycleprofilingproject.com/ national-motorcycle-profling-survey and fill out the survey each time you think you been profiled. David Duffy “Duff” State Coordinator ABATE of Iowa

Responsible and law-abiding motorcyclists across the country continue to report instances of being harassed and singled out by law enforcement simply because they are riding a motorcycle or wear motorcycle-related apparel. In fact, according to a recently conducted national survey, over thirty percent of the respondents felt they had been profiled by law enforcement despite not committing 18 - TRMI APRIL 2019

life was in front of me. Back when my future was so bright, you’re damn right I had to wear shades! Back then, they were likely Ray Ban Aviators or Oakley. Those were the only two brands and styles I wore from my JR high years until I paid off my college debt, so, likely 40 years.

Not the first, but likely the best! Facebook Memories! Oh that quick snapshot of a time gone by, you know, in the way way back time of as long as you have had your personal Facebook account that is. So, lots and lots of history we are talking here. It is interesting and a fun reminder of certain events over the last five, seven or ten years that have popped up. Events that the overlords of Facebook and their magical algorithms deemed worthy of punching that moment in time as a reminder, that reminder that pops up daily about a photo, event, party, or whatever seems to give you that flashback to a time forgotten. But social media never forgets. NEVER. If you think the revisiting of history is painting shit bad now, just wait. Every person of note it seems these days is having their entire history combed over and being asked explain what they meant by this, why the dressed like that, why they did what they did. Behavior that was the norm then is now being questioned. Hell, how long has John Wayne been dead? 40 years? His estate had to answer for an interview he did with Playboy in like 1970. Everybody it seems has to answer for their past, unless your name is Hillary.

That bike, dammit, it was amazing. I was in Fremont Nebraska many years ago promoting an antique motorcycle show and swap meet and man was it cool. I was there actually on official business, working for a radio station at the time and we were broadcasting live from the event. So, yea, I was getting paid to hang around an amazing building, stocked full of every kind of bike, style, brand you can imagine, dating back to the very beginning of bikes. Brands I had only read about, the kind that are a footprint in the history of riding, long since blown away by the sands of time. Russian bikes, Euro bikes, machines from India, Japan, Africa, and Wisconsin. It was incredible and to be included in the show they all had to be at least 30 or 40 years old. Wicked fun day. Everyone there loved bikes, like talking bikes, wrenching on them, caring for them, preserving the history of the industry and would tell you a story like an old friend in an instant. I have long spaced off some of the incredible machines I got to see that day. Harleys from WW2… actually bikes on display from every major war and some displayed with a history of where that particular bike served. Bikes that were used just for mail or milk delivery. Old dirt bikes, bikes inspired by Evel, cop bikes, outlaw bikes, daily riders, and more.

I have watched this social media explosion happen first hand as a member of the media, I watched how awesome it can be, how incredibly connected we have all become, yet I have wondered for years how this is going to play out in the future. HASHTAG, SHITSTORM.

None of that was on my Facebook memory that was Sunday morning when a certain bike photo was in my timeline. It was a cold, shitty winter morning and I was exhausted to the point where my internal organs were in pain, the kind of tired where you are running on fumes and my hair hurt with the addition of a slight, okay maybe it was more than a For all the bad things that history has (that use to stay hidden) sometimes a positive memory will pop up on Facebook slight hangover, that was NOT helping my current situation in the very least. As I was double fisting coffee, wishing at that will take you back a great moment that you were not the time that it was an Irish coffee to dull the pain of exexpecting, a day that is long since forgotten about, but as haustion (and a bit of gluttony) I scrolled aimlessly through soon as you see that memory pop up, it brings you right Facebook, scanning my memories…and there it was. back to it. In the olden days, we would get that feeling via something the elders called “a photo album”. It was a photo I took at that antique bike event of a 1968 Honda Trail 90 and the memory floodgates burst forth. Not In my memories recently popped up a picture of a bike. A for the bike event (those crept in later”) but of that make stunning, pure riding machine. An amazing piece of work and model. that when I walked by that bike, the emotions, memories, and feelings flooded my entire mind, body, and soul and it They say you never forget your first, and it wasn’t my first. stopped me in my tracks. It was my third. My third bike but the first bike I could “leWhat will stop me in my tracks will likely be different from gally” ride on the road. I mean, I was around 11 so it wasn’t what will stop you in your tracks, which is all cool, because “technically’ legal, but I looked old for my age, I was a we are all different, with different wants, needs, and desires damn good rider trusted by my dad and grandparents, it was coursing along our DNA. But this bike, that photo. BOOM, rural Iowa and let’s face it, shit was just different back then. and instantly I am back in a time and place when life was freaking amazing, the world was my playground, and all of I have talked many times (these pages included) about that 24 - TRMI APRIL 2019

bike and what it meant to me. It was the bike that really set me on the path to be a lifelong rider. The machine that took me beyond the trails and fields of our farm, to the gravel roads that led to paved roads, the paved roads that led to a small town and the small town that featured girls. Pretty damn sweet deal for a young man if you ask me. That bike was my gateway drug you might say. It was different, dependable, just flat out amazing in every way shape and form and dammit I wish I still had her today! If you ride, you have a similar story to mine, likely you are thinking back to YOUR bike that changed the course you are on. Maybe it was your first bike, maybe it was your third like me, or whatever the case, we all have that memory back to when time was simpler perhaps, the memory of a bike that inserted gas, tires, the wind, and the open road into our DNA and we became fused to our soul as a rider. It kicks ass and thankfully, there is no 12 step program to cure us. That bike changed my life in so many ways. That Facebook memory brought back to the forefront of the joy it brought me. Not all memories are great for each of us, but it’s important to hold on to the ones that bring us joy, bring us hope, bring us back to a better time. A time we strive for again. We can’t erase the past, we can only move forward and go out and make new memories riding. Whatever you ride, however you ride, make some great memories and have a blast. Central Standard Craft Burgers and Beer 1222 SE University Ave. Waukee, IA 50263 515-987-0095 Mon-Thur - 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM, Fri-Sat – 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM, Sun – 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM This month’s review came from a man that Lynnette works with (thanks Larry!). He lives in Waukee and swears this place has the best food he has ever tasted! Well a glowing recommendation like that certainly gets my attention, so we had to check it out. When Lynnette told me the name was Central Standard my first thought was, “I know what time zone we’re in, where are we going to eat?” It turns out this is also the restaurant’s name, or at least part of it. Central Standard Craft Burgers and Beer is a fairly new addition to the urban sprawl of Waukee. It turns out that although it may be new to the Waukee area, it’s not new to Iowa. This is their second location with the first being in the Quad Cities. The original location is in Bettendorf at 2239 Falcon Avenue. Their hours are the same with the exception of being open one hour later across the board.

Cajun flavor that provided the perfect amount of bite. As if that weren’t enough, the dipping sauce that comes with them appears to be your typical ranch dressing, but that is not the case! Dipping into plain old ranch dressing would be doing a disservice to these rings of culinary pleasure. This sauce is a glorious mixture of smoked Gouda and garlic buttermilk! It is truly a match made in the kitchen!!! My main course selection was another new way to do classic comfort food. BBQ Brisket & Onion Mac & Cheese! This starts out as their awesome three cheese Mac & Cheese served in a hot cast iron bowl. Piled on top is shredded smoked brisket, onion strings and honey – chipotle BBQ sauce. You put a fork full of that combination in your mouth and it is a literal explosion of flavor!!!!! My final selection was yet another old fashioned comfort food, Brussels sprouts. However, like the others, this isn’t your Grandmother’s comfort food! These are BBQ Brussels Sprouts! These sprouts are sliced in half and swimming in bacon jam!!! The unusual combination is out of this world! Lynnette had the C.S. Cobb Salad (minus the things she must not eat – cheese, egg & croutons.) She added Smoked Chicken. The salad came in a huge bowl, heaping with smoked chicken, the most tender, juicy shredded chicken you could imagine, with a fine smoked flavor. The bacon bits were piled up on the back side of the bowl, and the grape tomatoes were cut in half long-ways. The dressing was light and mixed well with the creamy avocado to make a unique accent to the salad. There was so much salad that she had lunch for the next day! We thought it best to pass on the shakes, but we saw many come through the kitchen door, and each looked like a delight! When you come here to eat, bring your appetite or bring your trailer, because the portions are generous!

Larry was right on the mark!!!!! This food is AWEThe menu is a cornucopia of SOME!!!!! If you’re in the Des Moines area, check new twists on old favorites. out the Waukee location and if you’re in the Quad Their craft burger selection Cities check out the Bettendorf location. Either yields some intriguing options which I will sample durway, make it a point to sample these delectable dishes!!!! ing subsequent visits. One Sunday an old biker walks into church and sits down in the front row. As the preacher is beginning his sermon, the devil suddenly appears at the altar. The members of A Texan was visiting Times Square, and was lost. He the congregation, including the preacher himself, flee the stopped a student and asked, “Do you know where the Man- church in terror, all except for this one old biker in the front hattan Mall is at?” “I sure do,” replied the student, “But, row. The devil notices this one biker still in the church and you know, you’re not supposed to end sentences with prepo- walks down from the altar to confront him. He roars at the sitions.” “What?” “Prepositions. You ended your sentence man, “Do you know who I am?” “Why of course I know with an ‘at’, which you aren’t supposed to do.” “Oh, ok,” who you are,” the man calmly replies. “You’re Satan.” said the Texan, “Do you know where the Manhattan Mall is “And you’re not afraid of me like the others?” the devil asks at, asshole?” somewhat miffed. To which the biker replies, “No. Why should I be? I’ve been married to your sister for the last 25 years.”
