Well this riding season has certainly been one that has been interesting. If you like riding in the cold, in the rain, in the wind, in the high heat, in the humidity, then you must be one happy camper about now! We have had a plethora of variety in the weather this year to ride and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Despite the weather, it has been good so far. I know I do not have near as many miles on by this time as normal, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will have a long and decent fall to keep racking up the miles on two wheels. Not only are the miles down for the bikers, but the biker businesses are also a little behind. As you get out and about, don’t forget to stop into the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa supporting businesses, tell them we sent ya!

After attending this year, it will definitely be on our to-do list for the future. Jefferson is a town of a little over 4,000, located on Hwy 4. When I finally found a parking spot, I realized that there was a lot more going on than I had thought there would be. The cars and trucks that were there for the car show were lined up around 3 different blocks! I love antiques, whether they are bikes or cars, and I was having a hard time not stumbling over my own toes as I walked by all those gorgeous vehicles. Our own Jordan Foster was there with her pink Mustang, but I never did spot her, and I don’t think I even saw all the vehicles that were entered! As I walked around a corner who should I see but the Carroll Cycle Center booth! I stopped to chat for a moment with them, andand then headed out to find the Kiwanis Aktion Club Booth, the people in charge of the Bike Show and Poker Run.
make their way back. We figured that they were just having too much fun at one of the previous stops to leave! It turned out that darn near everyone won something from the Poker Run and good n money was raised for an awesome cause. I stayed for the Bike Show and got to see a couple of my own picks win! The trophies were pretty unique. Not only were they a wood cut with both lettering and design done by burning, they were in the shape of Iowa and they were made by the students in the High School Tech Class, (Wood Shop, in my day). Seems the Kiwanis still had a brand new Bike Lift to draw for. Funniest thing about the winner(s); when they located the fellow, he was ecstatic. A couple minutes later, his dad walked up and said, “Let me see that winning ticket”. Turns out Father and Son both had the same name and one look at the signature and the dad was smiling and the son not looking very excited anymore. Happy ending, the dad gave the son the lift and I think the son’s smile was even bigger after that.
I was having a blast, but getting hungry, so I ventured out to find some food. I knew I would find something The awesome from all of the smells coming from the Kiwanis square. I ended up with an authentic taco with tortilla, Aktion Club it was huge and dripped all over my pants, but I didn’t Mission: To provide adults living with disabilities an opportunity to develop initiative, leadership skills, and to serve their communities. So the money that was raised that day went towards this goal. Raising money for charity is something we Bikers do all the time, and this was a pretty cool shindig. Poker Run, Bike Show, Festival, and Live Music to boot! That’s not counting all the other stuff going on over on the Main Square. The Poker Run had a registration count of a bit over sixty and they were starting to trickle back in, shortly after I arrived. The route was 109 miles round trip with stops at Van Walls (breakfast in Perry), Flat Tire (Madrid), Adobe Lounge (Boone), Lucky Pig (Ogden), and at the 209 Main/Tool Bar (Paton). Apparently, there were some riders that started out, but didn’t 6 - TRMI AUGUST 2013

steps in cadence sound so cool! The Festival is all about celebrating the awesome Bell Tower that was made possible through the donations of Floyd and Dora Mahanay. Those interested in the history of the bell can find tons of information on the City’s web site, and the Festival has a site also. I will say that they sound beautiful when they play, and the next time I go, I’m going to ride the glass elevator to the top of the building (14 stories), to check out the view from the top! One of the bands was starting up and it was already sounding good, so I headed over to the fenced-off beer garden, and picked myself up a libation to sip as I enjoyed the incredible voice of the female vocalist. Happy feet were starting to come on, but it was getting time for this tired lady to head home. I picked care. I just kept wiping my chin and eating, it was up a sandwich and beans, prepared and served by soooo good! some of the Lady Kiwanis, to take home to the old man and I headed out. This event has something to There were carnival rides and numerous vendors, the majority of them seemed to be local organizations offer all ages. There are all kinds of the old fashioned and other folks with some pretty cool stuff to offer. The contests throughout Saturday and a lot to see and do. Masons were offering up free watermelon slices, and Come in the morning for the parade and the rides, the Cattlemen’s Assoc. it bounced and flew back on to the road, directly into his path. The metal bracket landed squarely under his tire, puncturing it. Luckily, this experienced rider did not lose control of his bike (way to go!) and stayed both upright and on the road. He flipped on his flashers, signaling to his buddy, that he was in trouble. Safely on the side of the road, the two began to assess the situation. Using their flashlights, they located the t-bag, which had been nearly ripped apart, as well as the backrest. Unfortunately, a wallet and a bottle of Gatorade were missing from the bag. The two began to search the ditch.
Angels Among Us Some may think that it isn’t possible to hear the ringing of the guardian angel bell that hangs on many motorcycles. I beg to differ.
On this particular night, a couple from a nearby town were on their way home from their son’s wedding. The couple noticed what looked like flashlights moving in the ditch. As they got closer, they noticed the 2 bikes on the side of the road. Both bikers themselves, they pulled over to help. After hearing the story, they too grabbed flashlights from their truck and began to help search for the wallet, still in their wedding attire. After more than an hour of searching, the items were found. The two promised the bikers that they would go home, hook up the trailer, and return for the disabled bike. The I’m sure that many of you who read this story have a similar two from Tennessee couldn’t believe their luck. ridden behind him. After suffering a stroke in 2009, she was no longer able to ride with her husband. Not willing to leave his riding partner behind, he called up to Motorvation Sidecars and Trailers in Sibley, Iowa to order a sidecar. When he tells the story, he says that Mary, the owner of Motorvation, bent over backwards to make sure that his sidecar could accommodate the needs of his wife. The custom build includes a rack that will hold her folded wheelchair and a nose panel that opens the seating compartment, allowing her to enter the sidecar with ease. After the installation, the company asked if they could take photos for an upcoming promotion. Mike agreed and quickly put everything that had been removed for the installation, back on the bike for the shoot. And that’s where the pins come in. Mike had forgotten to put the pins back in the brackets of the backrest to keep it in place. (At this point, he stops and shakes his head and says, “That stupid mistake could have killed my best friend.”) the two returned with the tire, he took them to his nearby shop and helped them get the tire changed and check over each bike to make sure they were ready for the road. After another exhausting day, the couple insisted the two spend the night again before taking off in the morning. What were these two doing so far from home? Mike and Rodney had come to Iowa to pick up a very special sidecar. You see, Mike rides a 2011 Anniversary Edition (#79/#110) Indian Softail. Until recently, his wife had Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook
As for the couple who stopped to help the two stranded bikers, they just shrug their shoulders and say “Well, we couldn’t just leave them there!” Keep an eye out on the MOTORVATION website for pictures of Mike’s Softail, newly fitted with a sidecar. And above all, my friends listen for the bell! Susan Mast

“Freedom independence “Freedom, independence, liberty refer to an absence of undue restrictions and an opportunity to exercise one’s rights and powers.” That is right out of the dictionary, and could not be a more fitting moniker for this year’s 29th Annual ABATE of Iowa Freedom Rally. The Rally is held every year over the 4th of July weekend, and is still going strong after all of these years, primarily because the bikers of the Midwest love to exercise their FREEDOM whenever possible. We are free to come to the Freedom Park and have a blast and hang out with other likeminded bikers and enjoy the weather, camaraderie, motorcycles, music, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

By now many of you reading this are getting ready to hit the road to Sturgis or one of the alternative can’t-go-to-Sturgis events. It’s always an exciting time but it takes a lot of work to get the bike and the gear ready. What can we take? Or really it’s more likely to be, what we don’t need to take. Shall we pull the trailer and have room for a bunch of things we won’t use or just load up the back fender and hope for the best?

The lovely ladies inside told us about Tootsie, suggested some places to stop in their nice county and also gave us a lead on a great place to eat!
Guthrie County
This month took me to Guthrie County. Having lived in the Southwestern part of the state for the last sixteen years I am familiar with the county, however I was pleasantly surprised at some of their not so famous offerings. The county has beautiful hills, curves, live music and a very welcoming charm.
After leaving Casey I headed further down White Pole Road towards Menlo. Along the way I saw a sign that I had seen in a few places around the county, it referenced a Southern Gospel Sing at the county fair August 2nd and 3rd. I was pleasantly surprised to find such an offering in the county. Moving along I stopped by the Menlo Café as it was lunchtime. Nancy is the proprietor of the café and she is a third generation pie maker. You can eat her pie every Friday and Saturday. There are some interesting items up on her walls but make sure you ask her about the plaque with door knobs on the wall, the story is worth a listen and it reminds you of why we choose to live in Iowa!
Guthrie County is in the west central portion of the state. With its 593 square miles of land you will find plenty of nice roads to ride on. Interstate 80 runs basically as the southern border of the county and Hwy 141 will run you across the northern edge. It was founded in 1851 and named after Captain Edwin B. In the middle of July in Omaha for quite a few years, the Rollin’ Plains Motorcycle Club has organized a ride for the benefit of our soldiers. This ride has been quite the deal as it went across many different jurisdictions, and was one of the largest controlled rides in the Midwest. A plethora of motor patrol and cruisers from area police departments blocked traffic to make this event happen. This Ride went along without a hitch for nine years, up until 2012. After all the plans had been made and things organized, the ride had to be cancelled due to lack of the proper parade permits. This struck quite a blow to the attendees and organizers of the event. The Yellow Ribbon Run for 2012 was a bust, not to ever happen, with serious questions about the future of this ride that raises funds for the Friends of the Family Support Center at Offutt Air Force Base. The ride organizers started on the path in permit land, and low and behold, after an exhausting seven month process, got the permits they needed and the Yellow Ribbon Run 2013 was in the making. This did not all come without a hitch though. There were limits on the number of bikes that could be escorted, as many of the area police departments refused to assist with the run. With fewer officers on duty to help block, the ride could not be as big as it has in the past. In 2011 there were almost
Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook
1,000 bikes, and this year’s event was limited to half that many. These restraints did not stop Tom and Crew at Werner Cycle Works from being the site for the start of the run. It did not stop Kat 103.7 from coming out to play some tunes and have the equipment ready for the opening ceremony. It did not stop the Strategic Air and Space Museum from welcoming the bikers in with open arms to view some unique Military historical items and aircraft. It also did not stop Offutt Air Force Base from allowing a large procession of bikers onto the base around the parade grounds for a ceremony that showed support for the cause. After the visit to the base, the ride proceeded to Good Times bar in Louisville for some free food and prizes after the group ride. With the permit issues, and lack of local police assistance, the Yellow Ribbon Run will probably cease as it has been known. This is a very sad deal for the hundreds of bikers that come out on a Sunday in July to support the Friends of the Family Support Center. This group supports the families of deployed service men and women of all braches. Hopefully the powers that be can get back on board with supporting a wonderful cause and ride for our troops and their families. Vernon

Here we are in the middle of July already and have only had about threeish weeks of decent weather to ride. I know a lot of people that just broke there bikes out over the 4th for the first time this year. As many of us suspected the weather went straight form cool and rainy to sweltering summer heat like the flick of a switch. With Sturgis right around the corner and the party in Milwaukee a couple of weeks later I’m sure many people will be looking for ways to keep themselves a little cooler cruising down the road. I know I said my next article was going to be about my old ironhead but I’m still in the process of paint so it will have to wait for a later issue. I figured a few helpful hints on maintaining a comfortable ride during the HOT riding season might suffice. The key to staying comfortable is to deflect hot air away and circulate cool air in. Something that came out a couple of years ago is Harley’s Ventilator Windshield. This windshield is available for almost all Harley’s without a fairing. The purpose of this windshield is to vent air in through the adjustable side vents on the windshield itself. The vents are located on the lower half of the windshield so that it aims the air across your chest. If your morning starts out cooler just close the vents and as the day progresses and the heat climbs, just open the vents to get a little cool down. Next up is something for the guys with full baggers or those equipped with fairing lowers. I will admit on cool mornings, having these lowers is a great thing. It keeps the wind and or rain off of your feet and legs and on warmer days you can just open up the built in vents to get a little more breeze coming through. On those hot days it is nice not only for you but for your motor also, to be able to quickly remove these to open it up for a lot more airflow to cool you and the inches between your legs. Harley thought of a way to make them a quick detach part just like so many other products they have now. The kit makes it easy to remove your lowers without needing any tools. Harley also has you covered…(well your lowers covered anyway) with the fairing lower storage bag for when they are not on your bike. These bags feature a felt interior with a sturdy divider to protect your lowers from any rubbing or scratches. To help keep your posterior on the cooler side Harley has their Circulator seat pads. These pads are designed to promote air movement and reduce heat between you and your seat. The thin design allows for minimal seat height change so it doesn’t disturb your stability when at a stop. The pads are a simple Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook
on-off style. There is an elastic strip on the front part of the pad that just slips around the front of your seat and the non-slip back works with you to stay on the back. The matching passenger pad hooks onto the rider pad with hook-andloop tabs. If the Circulator seat pad doesn’t do it for you or just doesn’t tickle your fancy, I would recommend Mid-Frame air deflectors. A couple of years ago on a trip to Florida I wished the bike I was on had these. These deflectors mount just under the front part of the seat on the frame right in that hot pocket above the rear cylinder. These are now coming standard on certain touring models and are available for most touring bikes from 2001-current and some Softails. Harley only goes back a few years on Softail models but Kuryakyn has you covered all the way back to 2000. Personally this is a must have if you have a bike new enough for them unlike myself. Last but not least you need to make sure to keep yourself hydrated on the hot days. Harley has a couple of different things available to help you with this. First up is their saddlebag guard bag with water bottle. For those of you with baggers that have guards in front of saddlebags these make a great little storage area for your passenger’s small items but they also come with a water bottle that slides into the one side. They are available for both the left and right side so that the rider and passenger can have their own bottles. If this doesn’t carry enough fluids for you the MC has a saddlebag cooler that can carry up to a twelve pack of whatever desired beverage you wish. The cooler is fully lined and insulated to help keep your beverages cold on those sweltering hot days. No matter how hot it gets, there is always a way to help keep you cool/er going down the road. For those of you going to Sturgis have a safe and fun trip and don’t forget about the big 110th Anniversary party up in Wisconsin at the end of August. Hopefully next month we should start seeing some new products and bike models. Tony Darveau

Of course, the stage rocked all O weekend long and Saturday was w no exception! The entertainment n kicked off with a band of teenagers k who played classic rock better w than most bands who were actually th alive in that era- way to rock it a Anamalia!! Corporate Rock and A Hap Hazard kept the party going H until Wikid Likir took the stage. If u you’ve never been lucky enough y to catch this band out of Newton, IA; you are surely missing out!! Even Jeff Worley and Roman Glick from Jackyl stepped out of the tour bus to catch Davis and the Wikid Likir crew put on one helluva show. Following up Wikid Likir was the Cal Stage Band, who kept the crowd rocking for Nigel Dupree Band. It took me a minute to figure out who was on stage; Nigel Dupree (Jesse James Dupree’s son) had a full head of long flowing locks last time I’d seen him and now he’s gone all clean cut with short hair. But no matter the hairstyle, that boy can ROCK!! Finally, Jackyl took the stage putting on one of the best shows I have seen in my life. I looked across the crowd and there were bikers from age eight to 88 dancing and pounding their fists in the air. After rocking hits like “Down On Me” and “When Will It Rain” Jesse James took a break from singing and talked with the crowd for a while. Not only did the lead singer and entertainer extraordinaire declare his desire to run for Davenport Mayor, he kept mentioning that this show should be named “The First Annual Jackyl-fest” (still not confirmed, but this gal has her fingers crossed). Jackyl ended the show with the always popular “The Lumberjack”, but he didn’t play that Stihl chainsaw alone. Jesse James pointed out into the crowd and next thing we knew a young bikergonna be crowd-surfed up to the stage and joined the band to end the show. Under the direction of Jesse James Dupree, nine year old Emilio Magee made that chainsaw sing; together they cut apart a wooden stool and proceeded to throw it onto the stage until it disintegrated into mere bits and pieces. My apologies in advance to his parents when their son decides to become a rock star or lumberjack! Despite the (ongoing) un-cooperation from Mother Nature, another amazing rally is in the books! Creston Did It Again!!
Now it’s starting to get dark I tell y’all every year, you don’t know what you’re missing and I have noticed that if you don’t make it to McKinley Parks’ Partying fundraiser Rebyl Road is on stage, so it’s time to get my rear in the summer. Every year it just gets better and better. down there and do some This year we listened to 3 local or semi-local bands. Sydney stepping and snapping. I Lett opened and with all the energy the lead singer had, you always enjoy their sound and they have a lot of fun couldn’t help but feel the music. More country than rock, when they play, always it was toe tappin’ anyway. The best part is they performed a good time when they some of their own material, and I heard that they were perform! Now my feet headed to Nashville to perform in two days! Performing have been doing some next was The Rumley Brothers, they played some wellhappy moves here and there, but they are really getting impatient for that down home Southern Rock. I tell ya, when they came on stage, I closed my eyes and I was back on the field in Santa Barbara, CA listening to Ronnie and the rest playing their hearts out. Jimmie and the rest did the legends of Lynrd Skynrd proud, but they also performed some of their own material. I loved it enough to buy one of their C.D.’s. Awesome performance, and to make it better, they ran a raffle for $1.00 a ticket for a guitar signed by the whole band! Of course, this lady had to stay and get pic’s of the winner of that guitar, and in the meantime, I got my Thunder Roads shirt signed by all the members of the Jimmy Van Zant Band!! Yeeehaw! known and some original country-rock. After listening to the music for a while, I thought it was time to head to the vendors to see what they had to eat and drink. Miller is one of the sponsors and the alcoholic beverages were thanks to them. Brat on a bun sounded interesting, and it was good too, thank you Hy-Vee! There was a booth set up with some folks that were raffling off 2 Victory’s that came from Struther’s Brothers of Des Moines. They belonged to an organization called Endure. This organization assists Iowans with cancer and their families. For the price of $20.00 you could buy a chance to win both bikes! Not a bad deal. These people will be at other events, so if you’re interested in getting a chance at these bikes, look up their web site, www. endureiowa. 36 - TRMI AUGUST 2013
Now, don’t forget all this fun is to raise money to keep up and keep improving McKinley Park and all it provides. There is an Aquatic Center, a Skateboard Park, plenty of shelters with lots of green to enjoy; adjacent is the campground. Yep, next year I’m seriously considering camping overnight. Getting home at 3:30 in the am, makes for a long day. See ya at the next event! Annette Murphy

the Convention Center and this is where they have their ‘custom’ bike shows. Destination Daytona is where J&P Cycles & Daytona HD is also located When you are heading out on your long trip to and another “source” of vendors of productions. As Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach Florida, there are many wonderful historic sights to visit. Biketoberfest you leave Destination Daytona and head South, you run into Broken Spoke and Iron Horse, these are is the “mini” version of bike week and is only from very popular taverns with live music and activities. October 17-20, 2013, but stay longer and ride the Cabbage Patch is a ‘tiny’ bar that has a large lot for ‘loop’ or head to St Augustine.
Riding tips for Daytona Beach Florida
One of the “must do” rides would be the Scenic Daytona Loop, this ride takes you thru tree canopies and the scenic route of Tomoka State Park; check out the following URL for the “map” http://www.motorcycleroads. com/75/154/Florida/TheDaytona-Loop.html Daytona Beach Motorcycle Rally is spread out to many areas and needs to have multiple days to really enjoy and see most of everything. Main Street: is the location where you basically do a “crawl” down the main street of Daytona; historic bars and vendors all along the street. Rats Hole is
vendors, service and camping areas near Daytona Speedway. Daytona Speedway is setup with 100’s more vendors. Volusia County Flea Market is usually setup as a swap-meet of various individuals selling used and new items for your motorcycle. Beach Street is another Harley Dealer and more vendors. If you are wanting to just get away, there is a beautiful beach ride north to St Augustine where you can go to the fort or all the “oldest” city of Florida. Things I do to prepare for my trip to Daytona Beach. Google the following addresses, and add them into your GPS, “Cabbage Patch”, “Daytona Speedway” “Destination Daytona Harley”, Ponce Inlet, “Iron Horse”, Broken Spoke” Diva Angel Helene Miller

The Rusty Duck part Deux 723 Marshall Street, Dexter, IA 50070
will ride to eat
515-789-4142
Can you believe it? It was 3 years ago this month that Will Ride to Eat began! I decided that in honor of this land mark occasion that I would return to the “scene of the crime” so to speak. A trip back to where it all began... The Rusty Duck in Dexter, Iowa. My first review... I had no idea what I was doing (well nothing has changed in that regard)! If you missed the original review let me briefly recap to bring you up to speed. Lynnette and I had heard that the food at The Rusty Duck was something to be experienced. As you have all learned it doesn’t take much to get me excited about a place to eat (pretty much the promise of food will do it!!!) so off we went. I decided to have this thing they called the Ultimate Cheese Burger mainly because of the toppings listed, peppers, onions, mushrooms, bacon and cheese. Without knowing the size of the burger I ordered their Homie Fries and a salad. After seeing the size of the burger I realized that the salad was a grave error in judgment! Ok, that was then and this is now, I am three years wiser, I have seen the size of the Ultimate Cheese Burger, I have conquered it and lived to tell the tale. Tonight will be no challenge! Well... that turned out to be another grave error in judgment. I should have seen the signs going in... the 12” sub I had for lunch was still sitting in my gut like a chunk of half dried concrete... the heat and humidity were enough to sapp anyone’s appetite... well, enough excuses. Yes, folks... I was unable to finish it! Much like the first time I tried and tried to smash this behemoth down to be able to fit it into my larger than average 40 - TRMI AUGUST 2013
mouth but was unable to, so I resorted to the knife and fork. Not only has the size of this monster not changed but the flavor was the same as I remembered as well: The flavor of the peppers, the crunch of the thick cut bacon, the huge chunks of mushrooms, all this tied together with gobs and gobs of cheese. All this lusciousness piled atop one of the biggest and best tasting patties of meat I have encountered! I am ashamed to say that about eight bites (HUGE bites I might add) had to be relegated to the take home box... along with the Homie Fries (*sigh). Last time Lynnette had the special of the evening which was some sort of pasta dish but this time she went for the breaded Tenderloin. This thing is enormous in its own right, hanging off the bun in all directions. Upon its arrival she promptly cut it in half and tasked me with the job of finishing the second half. Well, I guess that will have to wait for another meal!
The Rusty Duck, it’s still there. The Ultimate Cheese Burger, it’s still huge and delicious. They are both still high among my favorites! When you go there be sure to bring your appetite along (or at least enough room in the tour pack for the take home boxes!!!! LOL) Check out their Facebook page and click on the Like button!
Until next month, ride safe and eat hearty! Craig Little craig@thunderroadsiowa.com PS If you have someplace you think we should check out in your neck of the woods, shoot me an email.

MILITARY RIDERS
After getting out of the service in 1969 I returned to the Midwest, Iowa/Nebraska area, and spent 20 years going through marriage and divorce and gaining a great daughter, then another marriage. The next 23 years were in California as Editor In Chief of BIKER Magazine and I am now Roving Editor for Easyriders Magazine, living back in Council Bluffs, Iowa. I ride a 1999 Road King named Elvis, a 2005 Road Glide named Pearl, and Ol’ Blue my shovelhead chopper. Elvis and Pearl gets lots of miles stacked on ’em, and Ol’ Blue rests most of the time. I have been very fortunate and lucky in my life and it ain’t over yet, brother. I’ll see ya on down the road somewhere. —Gailen ‘Clean’ Dean Shawler USN — 1965-1969 Roving Editor Easyriders Magazine Council Bluffs, Iowa
I received my “Greetings from the President of the United States” in late 1965 requesting I join his Army. Foxholes didn’t sound too appealing so I enlisted for four years in the U.S. Navy to see the World. After a record-rainfall boot camp in San Diego, I was sent to record-ice-storm damaged Norfolk, Virginia, for Communications Yeomen School. The years of 1966-1967 were spent doing an 18-month tour on the Tropical Island of Guam. I was a teletype operator in communications at Nimitz Hill, Admiral Bird’s headquarters. I have papers somewhere stating that I worked in the Pentagon, a location President Johnson set up office on Guam. I personally sent the message from Admiral Bird to President Johnson inviting him to stay at his residence while on the island. The USS Estes was my home the last two years of my stint. We were a communication ship supporting the Commander of Task Force 76. I made two cruises to Vietnam on this ship before it got decommissioned in 1969, and I got a month early out. I had achieved the rate of Third Class Petty Officer in 17 months and didn’t advance any higher because I would have had to change my rate to Yeomen or Radioman, neither of which appealed to me. I know my time in the Navy helped guide the rest of my life. The partyin’ in the many ports was fun, but more importantly was how people overseas lived, loved and worshiped. I am a Charter Member of American Legion Riders Iowa Post 731 and VFW Post 4325, in Mattoon, Illinois. 42 - TRMI AUGUST 2013

Riding For A Cause June 29th marked the 5th Annual “Veterans Reaching Out To Veterans” Poker Run, sponsored by English River Outfitters. The starting point for this ride was in Brighton at CaMadners Bar and Grill. Throughout the morning, bikes rolled in and out of town to register and sign up for the drawings to be held later that day. Approximately thirty eight bikes registered. Despite the rain, which followed the group the entire afternoon, organizer Chuck Geerst was pleased with the event. With three new stops on the route, he was happy to report that all of the host’s treated the group very well. At the end of the ride, back in Brighton, riders were able to enjoy great food and live music. Prizes were awarded, as well. The proceeds from this ride, a sweet $1,600.00, will be put towards the purchase of a trackchair that will be available for guests to use at the English River Outfitters (Washington, IA) resort for
English River Outfitters Run veterans. They are roughly $4,500 away from their goal. Chuck would like to thank everyone for their “phenomenal support” to this project. For more information about English River Outfitters, sign up for their newsletter at www. englishriveroutfitters.org. Susan Mast

For the past six years, on the Saturday after the 4th of July, folks in Avoca have held the Freeman Ride. It was initially started as a benefit for the family of a fallen brother, Paul Freeman, but has since evolved into a growing ride that helps out the community. This event is the epitome of small town Iowa coming together for a great cause. The last few years the proceeds from the ride have gone to help with community projects in Avoca, Hancock, Shelby, and Tennant and this year was no exception. The event this year was the biggest ever with almost 300 motorcycles on the ride, some cars, and even some party buses for those that want to support the cause but don’t ride. Well I guess some on the bus just wanted to party hard and do so safely, not a bad idea.

The sign up for the ride was at the Exchange, who loves the bikers coming in and having a blast, and is the ending location for the run as well with food and The city of Avoca, which is located at the intersection live music that was provided by Murphy’s Law. Now of Interstate 80 and Highway 59 in southwest Iowa, this band is quite unique in the fact that the three band welcomes the event every year. They allow the event members own more guitars than razors. The guys in organizers to the band are middle to upper teenage young men that block off the sound and play very impressively, regardless of their main drag in ages. Quite the entertainment at the street dance after downtown a hot days ride! Some great BBQ by Tex and cold Avoca to beverages were flowing. hold the event, but by Next year’s event will be on July 5th so can check it out the looks of on Facebook under Freeman Ride. things, next year may Vernon 44 - TRMI AUGUST 2013

Every once in a while while riding, I come across something that makes me take note for future reference. An idea or experience that may sound rather simplistic, something that should be obvious but isn’t, and I just thought I would share some of that with the readers. Some of these little “Pearls of Wisdom” have been gained from knowledge, experience, miles, and sometimes just flat out being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hope that you find them interesting, thought provoking, and maybe even funny.
on TV are for entertainment purposes only and not as a guide to be a biker, non-bikers will never “get” it, rider education courses are good for riders of any age and experience level as something can always be learned, cars suck, people in cars suck worse, turn signals seem to have become optional, asphalt roads with heavy truck traffic are a bitch to ride on dry let alone when raining, concrete roads have pothole sizes proportionate with the age of the pavement, tailgaters in cars do not like pennies “falling” out of your pocket, keep an eye on your fuel level, karma is a bitch, plan for the weather for the day Don’t follow rock trucks, don’t forget sunscreen, but keep in mind it is frequently wrong, good tires are always keep hydrated because dehydration creeps priceless, making power and going faster is a common up on you, to avoid a crappy day don’t follow bull upgrade but better brakes to stop quicker is often racks or campers leaving the campground, keep your overlooked, 100 miles before breakfast makes for a windshield or glasses clean, in the event of tipping great day, life is a choice make it a wise one, if you are over; wearing gloves can save your hands, don’t ride not having fun simply lower your standards, give other tired, don’t ride if you have had too much to drink, bikers a chance because everyone that you meet don’t ride with people you don’t trust, always know may know things that you don’t, it does not matter the speed limit where you are riding, if traveling where the road brought you but more so where it is to a different area make sure you know their laws taking you, nothing is more welcomed than a car wash regarding motorcycles, don’t take out frustration on during a storm, an old graybeard told me years ago your motorcycle, don’t put in more miles in a day than “never pass up a gas station, a bathroom, or a POA”, your ass will allow, there is not much stress that a riding faster than the group means you will get there ride on a motorcycle won’t diminish, riding helps keep alone, ride like you want to ride, stop and check on or a healthy brain as riders keep more physically and help a biker on the side of the road because you will mental aware and this carries over into other parts never know when it may be you that needs the favor of life, bikers have companionship like no other and returned, it is not painful to wave to other bikers. create new lifelong bonds all the time on the road, cool ain’t comfortable, riding is riding no matter what the This has been a short list. If you have any others to make/model/style, horsepower costs money in more share, post them on the Thunder Roads Magazine than one way, old highways are harder on bikes and of Iowa Facebook page. We would love to see your people than newer pavement, riding in the rain sucks, Pearls! there is nothing like a seventy mile an hour wind-chill on a hot day to cool you off, attitudes and the biker Vernon world don’t generally go together well, biker shows

Two guys are drinking together at a bar and go into the bathroom. Standing at the latrine, Bill notices that his buddy is very well endowed. “Wasn’t always that way,” the buddy says. “It’s a transplant. I had it done over on Harley Street. It cost a thousand bucks, but as you can see, it’s well worth every cent.” So Bill visits the doctor on Harley Street that day. Six months later, the two guys meet up again at the bar. Bill explains, “I took your advice, but you were robbed. I got mine for $500, not a thousand.” They go back to the restroom to compare. “No wonder,” his buddy says, “That’s my old one!”.
A lawyer was cross-examining the doctor about whether or not he had checked the pulse of the deceased before he signed the death certificate. “No,” the doctor said. “I did not check his pulse.” “And did you listen for a heartbeat?” asked the lawyer. “No I did not,” the doctor said. “So,” said the lawyer, “when you signed the death certificate, you had not taken steps to make sure he was dead.” The doctor said, “Well, let me put it this way. The man’s brain was in a jar on my desk but, for all I know, he could be out practicing law somewhere.” ************************************************************* Two high school students are digging a ditch in the hot summer and they’re complaining about it non-stop. “Sheesh, this is hard work. I hate this job!”
************************************************************* A fellow finds himself in front of the Pearly Gates. St. Peter explains that its not so easy to get in heaven. There are some criteria before entry is allowed.
“Yeah. How come we’re down here working our asses off, and the foreman is up there sitting under a shady tree with a cool drink, and making 3 times as much as us? It’s not fair!”
“That’s it! I’m sick of this! I’m gonna go ask him!” So the guy climbs out of the ditch and goes up to the foreman under the shady tree. “How come we’re down there working our asses off in the Was he generous? give money to the poor? Charities? No? St. burning hot sun, while you sit up here under this shady tree Peter told him that that too was bad. with a cool drink?” The foreman says, “Well, it comes down to one word: Did he do any good deeds? Help his neighbor? Anything? No? Intelligence.” St. Peter was becoming concerned. “Whaddya mean, intelligence? You calling me stupid!?” “Well, here. Let me show you.” Exasperated, Peter says, “Look, everybody does something So the foreman holds his hand up against the tree and says, nice sometime. Work with me, I’m trying to help. Now think!” “Punch my hand as hard as you can.” For example, was the man religious in life? Attend church? No? St. Peter told him that’s bad.
The man says, “There was this old lady. I came out of a store and found her surrounded by a dozen Hell’s Angels. They had taken her purse and were shoving her around, taunting and abusing her.
The guy figures, now’s my chance for some payback! He winds up and swings at the foreman’s hand as hard as he can, but at the last moment, the foreman yanks his hand away. The guy nearly breaks his hand smashing it against the tree. “See what I mean?” the foreman says. “Intelligence.” I got so mad I threw my bags down, fought through the “Alright. I get it.” And he goes back to work with his hand crowd, and got her purse back. I then helped her to her feet. I throbbing in pain. then went up to the biggest, baddest biker and told him how His buddy in the ditch asks him, “So whad he say?” despicable, cowardly and mean he was and then spat in his “He said we’re slaving away down here because of face”. intelligence!” “Intelligence!? Is he calling us stupid!? What does he mean by “Wow”, said Peter, “That’s impressive. When did this happen”? that!?” “Oh, about 10 minutes ago”, replied the man.

C.O.I.R. Report
Coalition of Independent Riders
INDEPENDENCE Sometime between June 11 and June 28, 1776 Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. After living under the tyranny of English rule without representation he summarized the feelings of a not yet born America. I believe that from time to time it is important for citizens today to review the founding documents as I believe they point the path to where this country is supposed to be going. The following is an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, --that to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government,…” It is good for us to remember that the government was intended to serve the people, not the other way around. It
58 - TRMI AUGUST 2013
is therefore, our duty, as Americans to be involved in our government, if for no other reason, to remind them that we the people are actually in charge. Take a look in the mirror, have you done all you can. Take a look at your children and grandchildren. Don’t we owe them at least as much freedom as we have come to enjoy? Your local newspaper or talk radio station can provide information on “Town Hall” style meetings conducted by various politicians over the summer. In addition you’ll find many of them at your local county fair. Believe me, once they’ve met you and know who you are, your opinion matters a whole lot more to them. When you meet or call them or even email, just remember to: Be professional and courteous
Be concise
State what the issue is
State your concerns
State what action you are requesting Each time you do it the more comfortable you’ll be. Believe it or not you may even find out that you like it. Right now we are facing a new, mostly invisible threat to our liberties. New vehicles are being equipped with event data recorders without establishing who owns the information. According to the American Motorcycle Association on June 18, U.S. Reps Mike Capuano and Jim Sensenbrenner introduced HR2414- the “Black Box Privacy Protection Act.” It would require manufacture to disclose if an event data recorder is installed in or on the vehicle (including motorcycles), the data collection capabilities of the device, and how the data may be used. It establishes that the owner of the vehicle owns the information. In other words, consumers would have the ability to turn the black box on or off. The National Highway Traffic Administration has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking requiring black boxes in all cars manufactured after Sept 1, 2014. Please take action. Check it out at www.americanmotercyclist.com or shoot me an email. peter@riderpromotions.com
