Welcome to December! I remember years ago in school talking about where we would be in 2005, 2010, and 2015. That seems like it was so long ago, yet just yesterday at the same time. I sure as hell know that where I thought I would be and what I thought I would be doing have long gone by the wayside. I have no complaints about where things have ended up by any means, but just shows that you never know where you will end up, especially when you are trying to plan a life from a teenager’s perspective. Who knows where we will be tomorrow, or years from now, so enjoy the days at hand and live life to the fullest. Many other things have changed over time as well, and the biker lifestyle is no exception. Years ago, biker parties were considerably different than today. If you could not haul it in on your bike, you simply did not need it. Food, drink, some accessories and biker gear were available, but nothing to the extent of today. People now haul bikes in trailers and there are more and more campers than ever before. Some people don’t even bring a bike along to the biker parties; they just want to have a comfortable place to sleep. Pickup loads of campsite amenities are hauled in and people make a mini vacation get away all over a rally ground camping area. The old school biker crowd is living up to their name, getting older. Some want more comfort for rides and camping experiences, while others try to hold on to the old school ways and “rough it” at events. It seems that all types of bikers today get along just fine, despite the differences in perspective of what is a good time. Times have changed, bikers have changed, and events need to change to cater to the riders of today. Our 2016 event list is growing like usual this time of year. In the fall and winter the list of upcoming events gets a little slim with the impending winter weather, but as people start to look at calendars and get things scheduled, they start to roll in. We have been getting emails about events for next year already, and that works great to help keep everyone informed. If bikers do not know what is going on and where, they cannot plan ahead to attend. If you know of events, we are

looking at getting confirmed information for the list. Email the date, name of event, and starting location to Vernon@ thunderroadsiowa. com. The listing is in the magazine every month toward the back, or on the back cover. Events for the next few weeks are also posted on the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Facebook page the first of every week. This is a FREE event listing and our way of giving back to the biker world to let everyone know what is going on. Christmas 2015 is right around the corner. When you are getting out and about for your Christmas festivities and shopping, don’t forget to stop by our sponsors in the magazine. Whether it is for food and drink, shopping for yourself or friends and family, or looking for that new bike or accessories, frequent the supporters on page 10-12. Without them we could not make this magazine a reality every month, so stop by, tell them Thunder Roads sent you, and enjoy your Christmas season. The Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Staff would like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We truly appreciate all of the readers, supporters, and sponsors and thank you for another great year! We truly hope that your 2016 starts off great and is better than 2015. Take care, ride safe, enjoy the season, and see you at the shows soon! Vernon and Melanie Quote of the Month: “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” Calvin Coolidge

On the Cover At Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa we take family very seriously. Family is not always blood, but will always have your back. On the cover this month is our TRMI Family that we would not trade for anything in the world. These are some of the best people in the world, and we love them dearly. Thanks to them for all of the hard work and dedication month after month. All of the TRMI family would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas. We extend our happiest wishes to you and yours this holiday season and hope you can spend time with those that you love. Thank you for reading, thank you for supporting, thank you for a great year in 2015. Ride On!

Helping a Brother in Need

and Carol had friends, family, and extended family that recognized all the times that one or both of them had been there to help out any number of times when help was At some point in our lives we are all faced with an ah-hah needed. When called upon for help, they don’t ask what, or moment. That one incident in our life that seems to click how, or why. They just ask when. Rain, shine, snow, or high and give us a greater understanding of the human race and waters, these two epitomize what a biker family is all about. the opportunity to see the inherent good that lies somewhere And now, the favors were being returned and not one surly inside each of us. And sometimes that moment comes from face in the crowd! somewhere you least expect it. Hot as hades, humid as the jungle, there wasn’t anything “That’s what we do, we help”… Those were the words going to deter these friends from helping these two people! spoken by Neveah to her mother and father the night before Thinking to myself that I had better not complain about the the long-awaited family trip to Minnesota. She had planned heat, cuz’ the guys that were on top of that sheet metal roof this trip with her parents over 2 months ago. Neveah’s weren’t doing any complaining, I wandered out through the parents do their adult kids and some of the moms introducing myself, and getting vacation in Algona, at stories from everyone about how either Jamie and/or Carol the Freedom Rally, and had come to their aid at one time or another. And who was then they let Neveah that standing at the ladder, running tools, and taking the pick where they go on pieces of sheet metal that were being handed down. Holy their Family Vacation. Schnikes! Neveah!!! Did I just see her throw something When her dad got the up to one of the guys on the roof? Yep, he just threw a drill call from a friend of his battery pack down to her. She had gone and gotten the other telling them of Jamie battery pack, had tossed it up to him, and then she caught & Carol’s roof being the battery pack that he threw down. That girl worked torn off of their shop harder than half of the people there. Her mom finally got during the tornados her to stop long enough to take some water, and to go get that came through, he some food. Yelling up to the guys on the roof that it was told his friend that he time to take a break, Neveah wouldn’t go eat until they did. couldn’t give him an Chowing down on the yummy food that Carol and Val had answer now, that he put out, everyone enjoyed some shade time, and getting to had to consult with his know each other. family, and would call him back. Mom and Sooo, how many bikers, (and 1 young lady), does it take to Dad both turned and put a roof onto a building? The answer, every single one of looked at Neveah, they explained what was going on, and them! And, then some! Good thing they had Neveah’s help without even blinking, Neveah said, Mom, Dad, “When a and supervision, not sure if it would have gotten finished Brother needs help, we help. That’s what we are about”. Out without her! Just in time to beat the dark, it was finished! of the mouths of babes! 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 33 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa. MONONA COUNTY Monona County was formed in 1851 and encompasses 699 square miles. Only 4.9 of those miles is comprised of water, leaving 694.1 miles of beautiful traveling area known as the Loess Hills, where you can find some of the most visually stimulating riding our great state has to offer.

standards, it does possess one of only two stoplights in the entire county, so of course we expected to see a few things here. We stopped by to see the Museum of American History on South 7th Street and from there went to the William Ring House on N 6th Street. The William Ring House is a local landmark and is impressive in that it is entirely constructed from solid Walnut…from floor joists, flooring, woodwork, to siding. If you are looking for something a little less historical, and a little more refreshing, then stop by the Hawkeye Bar. The Hawkeye Bar is always on our list of places to visit when in the area. Friendly staff and a clean, fun atmosphere are abundant here, so make sure you stop by when passing through Mapleton.

is home to 2,900 people and the second and final stoplight in Monona County. So cruising down one of the main streets we start noticing flags hanging from the streetlights, and low and behold the flags contain historical information…nothing like making our job easier….so thank you Onawa. By paying attention to these little tidbit filled flags we quickly learned that Onawa is home to the widest main street in the United States, as well as the birthplace of the beloved Eskimo Pie. So continuing our quest for sustenance we found ourselves at Suds and Jugs. This local establishment provides some amazing food, cooked the old fashioned way in a small kitchen in the back. The food was hot, fresh, and down-right delicious. It is worth the drive from almost anywhere if you love a good philly or burger. Onawa is also home to the Monona County Arboretum and Lewis and Clark State Park if you are looking for some historical immersion.

to the Midway, I have no idea where you have been hiding, but get off your ass and head to Soldier. While in Soldier we had to swing by Leather n Hawgs to see our good friend Greg. Greg always provides some earthy sarcasm paired with a hug or two. While shopping around the store I always seem to find something to add to my collection of riding essentials, not to mention that Greg can sew anything your little heart desires. Next time you stop by Leather n Hawgs be sure to mention Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa….and maybe I can earn myself a discount!

Turin is home to only whole family. Hunting, fishing, and cabin rentals are available. Moorhead is also home to the popular Preparation Canyon. A must see for everyone, parts of it may also require some travelling off of pavement, so tread lightly when you visit on two wheels. By this time, the sheer time required to travel the winding roads of Monona County had us longing for home, so we turned ourselves towards Blencoe and then headed south in search of our pillows. Touring Monona County was an enlightening experience…we learned a lot about places relatively close to home, and rediscovered why 68 people, but this little burg has a pretty amazing history. In 1955, archaeologists uncovered the remains of four 5,500 year old skeletons in the Loess Hills. Cooperatively the remains became known as the Turin Man. The Turin Man is believed to be the oldest remains ever uncovered in Iowa. Today you can visit the adjoining park on Wilderness Loop (about 12 miles from County roads E-16 and L-20 between Onawa and Turin) and learn more about the ancient cemetery, but be aware that some gravel travel is required. From Turin we took 37 south east to Soldier. As bikers, we all know about Soldier, we all love Soldier, but only a few of us actually get married in Soldier…wink wink. Anyway, Soldier is home to the infamous Midway Tavern; the home of Hot Meat and Cold Beer…and run by a couple of pretty great people if you ask us. Steve and Dee not only cater to the wants and needs of others all year long; they turn their tavern (and the town) into pretty amazing party grounds every year to kick off and wind up riding season. History of Motorcycles Welcome to Big Hair and Technology The 1980’s brought many changes to American pop culture. The birth of Pac-Man and Microsoft Windows paved the way for technology to supersede human interaction, and the assassination of John Lennon ushered in the downfall of music as we knew it. By the end of the decade we saw the Berlin Wall fall and inflation rise to record levels. What impact did this have on the motorcycle world? Well let’s just say that Japan was doing far more than selling the first compact disc players the world had ever seen. Japanese bikes were quickly becoming hotter than an 80’s teen girl wearing Love’s Baby Soft.

cruisers became as prominent as we see today, Kawasak Kawasaki decided to take the engine from their legendary “Ninja” and equip a low slung cruiser frame with it. What they produced was the Eliminator…a 900 cc (later a 1000 cc) water cooled inline-four with a 6 speed transmission that produced over 100 HP in a sleeker and lighter model than Honda’s Magna.

Suzuki produced the Madura 700 and 1200, and the models certainly combined power and style. Another example of an 80’s v-4 cruiser, but was quickly abandoned by Suzuki after only two years of production…a fact that makes them somewhat of a Though motorcycling had been popular for years, it rarity, though became more accessible to some riders due in part to the body styling the many low-priced and easy to ride Japanese models appears quite on the market. Primitive Camping, a lost art We recently took a camping trip that was designed to help bring back that lost art. With a name like Sunken Island Lake, we were certain that we were going to find exactly what we were looking for. Sunken Island is located just outside Fonda, Iowa.

I have officially experienced my last ride of the season for the ninth time now. Only in Iowa can the temperature drop to freezing at night then exceed 70 degrees the following day. I’m not in favor of putting it into winter storage just yet, so I have tried to squeeze in every mile and minute of riding time that I can get. During several of these “last rides of the season” I realized rather quickly that I am an expert at procrastination. I headed out a little later than I should have, and then ignored the urge to head for home a little too long. Needless to say, once the sun starts to drop, it goes down fast and the evening chill intensifies greatly when hauling ass for home. Thinking that the ninth “last ride of the season” could finally be it and knowing that the season finale is about to spread across Iowa like the plague, my mind is racing with ways to occupy my warped brain instead of riding during the winter storage. This time of year many bike enthusiasts are planning and preparing for the sacred winter rebuild. I’m content with the current condition and look of my bike so I carefully budgeted zero dollars for winter work. However due to my lengthy resume of procrastination, the iron horse is still without heated grips and I have frostbit fingertips to prove it. Maybe I could occupy some of my winter down time and improve my budget by trying my skills at a swap meet. Digging through the parts pile, polishing up some parts, pricing items, and then packing them away until the Capital City swap meet could satisfy my brain and help my budget. Then again my expert procrastination skills indicate that I should have started that process a long time ago, I will never be ready on time now. Besides that, I’m not sure I want to make the transformation from Swap Meet Spectator to Swap Meet Vendor, the word transformation terrifies me! Thanks a lot Caitlyn Jenner. Occasionally, I consider myself to be a genius so I came up with the perfect plan to occupy my winter down time. I reached out to a couple of riding buddies and volunteered to help them with their winter bike building plans. This would allow me an opportunity to bust some knuckles turning wrenches, hang out with my friends, ride down memory lane rehashing all the goods times that we have had, suck down a beverage or two, jam out to some tunes, and share my vast list of creative bike building ideas with them. And best of all, no fears of blowing my budget.

26 - TRMI DECEMBER 2015

Unfortunately my plan came to a screeching a halt, none of my buddies have any winter rebuild plans! Everyone had the same sad story, no money this year due to rising costs of healthcare. Or at least that’s what they want me to believe. My excitement about maintaining my reputation while watching them blow their wad might have scared them off. So the rising costs of healthcare have ruined my winter down time plans! As December rolls through Iowa, it brings along with it an upcoming Election Year. On November 8, 2016 this great nation will once again go to the polls to elect a man, woman or actor to lead our nation. In my sick mind, that means I have less than 12 months to shine up my right to vote. My expert procrastinating skills are not going to win this time. My winter rebuild plans have been altered to rebuilding my brain on what is going on in the world around me. I want to be educated so that I can do my part to ensure that someone who really cares about the things that are important to me gets that job. Every time I start to feel the winter blues of not being able to ride, I whip out the old smart phone and surf the web in search of information that will guide me down the road to making an informed, educated, decision about which little oval I should blacken on Election Day. I have already discovered that we have way too many doo-rags in the ring, that’s hats for you slow readers. I have performed some background checks and found that some of these candidates are rather interesting. On the docket, we have Mayors, Governors, a Brain Surgeon, Senators, Lawyers, a talk show host, Veterans, a CEO, book writers, an Indian immigrant and a Bruce Springsteen super fan. If there was a clown we could call it a circus. Oh, and let’s not forget about the real estate tycoon who specializes in beauty pageants, who probably doesn’t know shit about the beauty of living life in Iowa on two wheels. My vote is going to count! Because once we put someone in the big house we can’t get rid of them by simply saying “you’re fired!” Until next time! Shift LaRue

fenders ruled the day. I still think an 80’s Shovel with a kicker is a beautifully simple bike. They don’t sell very often, because they are a blast to ride, they are decent to work on if you know your way around a Trouble-head, and they hold their value. And these bikes still look great 30 years later. Imagine that? Then along came the Happy Days bikes of the early 1990’s, led by the huge popularity of the Heritage Softail and Springer models. Great bikes to be sure, but the RUBS lined up in droves to have them painted in 1950’s Easter egg colors. Robin’s egg blue was big, and so was Titty-pink, oops, I meant Salmon. Mint green made a late run too. Yikes. It’s motorcycle, not a breath mint. Frames were painted or dipped in these shades, and the tins got the full treatment too. Then every road lamp, driving lamp, turn signal and headlight got a visor over it. I can’t remember the last time I saw a bike in these shades, probably the last of this trend was around 1996. I’m sure the bike shops had their hands full taking them all back apart and stripping off the 50’s candy colors and putting them back together with Tribal flames. Then they started building bikes on TV. That’s when stupid learned to fly in my opinion. Building a bike from the ground up isn’t easy. I’ve done it, and I respect anybody else that has “Fad Bikes”- just save your money. done it. On the other hand, I do believe the object is to end up with a motorcycle that can be used and ridden. somebody probably paid well over $30K for it at the peak. The super-duper tall ape-hanger thing seems to be slowing down now. I wonder how many guys rethought that idea after they rode to Sturgis this year. “Uh, guys, I gotta stop. I haven’t felt my fingers since Sioux Falls”. At least that’s an easy mod to get back out of when you finally swallow your pride. The latest rage is the tall tire bagger. I was watching a TV show where the shop owner/builder kept calling one of them “a $100,000 motorcycle”. No, it’s not, it’s just a Road Glide with beach bars and a tire and wheel set off of a donked Humvee limo. While I don’t know of any particular performance downfalls of riding a bike on 24” rims, I do know it’s going to be the next trend that gets over cooked in the fad bike oven, if you want to look like an NBA player on two wheels, good for you. But I’ll keep my money in my pocket. So here’s the message- when you see everybody lining up to pay way too much for something in the motorcycle world, which ultimately results in a bike that is less functional, it’s probably time to step away. As I said last month, I’ve been on a motorcycle for over four decades. I’ve seen fads come and go, and a lot of hard earned money go down the drain, spent on bikes that don’t ride correctly, aren’t easy to own or insure, and drop in value like a brick in a swimming pool when the music stops. And yes, my own bike is nowhere near a stock bike, but nothing is overdone. A 200 tire, 2” over front end, another 2” over in the backbone and down tubes. It looks pretty tame out there, and that’s just fine with me. I hope it looks that tame ten years from now. Mark Mullins, President, MAG.

For as far back as he can remember, Ed “Padre” Thornton of Cedar Rapids has been fixing things. His journey as a ‘fixer’ began shortly after he turned 15 and found himself homeless, living at the junk yard he was employed by. For much of his life, the tools Ed used were made of metal and stamped with a brand name. Over the last 27 years, although he still turns wrenches, the tools he’s come to love and utilize are those he found within the Bible. Padre lived a tough life, mostly due to his own choices; if he wouldn’t have had that raging house party when his parents were on vacation, he may not have gotten kicked out of the house at such a young age. Enlisting in the Air Force at 19 years old, he was hoping the military would help him get his life on track. Although his young wife was not fond of his decision to enlist, she stood behind him and supported him the whole time. Padre enlisted as the Vietnam War was coming to an end, he signed up as Munitions Maintenance and when asked why he chose that occupation- his response was that it was the only spot available at the time. Noticing Padre’s talents working on vehicles, he was quickly moved into a Crash Truck Repair position and sent out to Ellsworth AF Base in Rapid City, SD. He then assumed the role of “Mobile Joe” working out in the missile field; Padre was in charge of making sure all the vehicles in the field were running smoothly, mostly he just changed burnt out headlights and kept the fluid levels topped off. However, this position was one of the few on base that came with the opportunity to travel around the base. “Mobile Joe” would come to the location of the vehicle, with that freedom also came the task of making sure the soldiers stationed at the nukes were fully stocked with supplies (smokes, beers, etc) as those boys couldn’t leave their position for upwards of 36 hrs. Eventually, Padre was sent to a base in Taiwan that at one time housed over 10,000 troops; upon his arrival, the population on the base was less than 100 soldiers. He wasn’t sure why he was there, but passed his time working in the shop on base.

Padre has owned 2 other Hondas and 9 Harley Davidsons. Currently he has his choice of a slammed ’96 Fat Boy and a supped up ’03 Ultra Classic when he is in need of two-wheel therapy. He currently has no plans for any modifications on either of those bikes, but also mentioned that he’s never had plans for modifying any of his bikes, the modifications just happen (as he winks). Approaching his 42nd anniversary with wife Sherry aka “Saint”, he admits he wasn’t always the best husband. Their marriage has been riddled with drug and alcohol abuse as well as physical and verbal violence. Growing up in the church, Sherry turned to God for assistance in her crumbling marriage and attended church for 5 years alone. After Padre had gone on a good bender one evening, Sherry asked her pastor to come over and talk to Padre. Padre wasn’t hearing one bit of what that preacher had to say, he walked out to the kitchen in the middle of the pastor’s sentence and returned with a beer, lit up a joint and promptly told the pastor to “get the f*ck out of this house”. Things in their marriage went from bad to worse after that day. Lying in bed one night in 1988, drunk and high, Ed clearly heard a voice say “you only have one more shot at this, this is your third chance, if you don’t take it-you will lose everything”. The room was dark and Padre knew he was alone, but he knew he wasn’t crazy, someone had just spoken to him. He awoke the next morning and began to heal his marriage as well as himself. The more Padre confessed and prayed to God, the better his life became. Soon, he and Saint were attending church weekly together. Realizing his calling was for much more than just attending on Sundays, he began studying the Bible and eventually they both became ordained ministers. “We live our lives with an open heart and mind and are willing to step when the Lord calls” he says of himself and his faith.

For 20 years his routine consisted of going to work, going to church and going home (no bars, no drinking no drugs) As President Carter began downsizing troops, Padre received and he thought he was doing it all the right way, until health an honorable discharge from the Air Force and returned to issues forced his mother in law to move in with him and Cedar Rapids with his family and his new-to-him chopped Saint. She lived her life devoted to her husband and his Honda 360. Although his motorcycle riding took a back dreams. It was through her frequent complaints of waiting seat to raising kids for a few years, Padre came back to the too long to do what she wanted to do with her life and now motorcycling world about 14 years after parting ways with it’s too late that prompted Padre to re-evaluate his own his first Chopper. And even though he was without bikes life. Mother- in- law’s demeanor has made the transition while raising those young’uns, their 4 kids weren’t protected challenging, but Padre credits her with helping him realize from being bit by the two-wheel bug; in fact, he co-signed that living the “good” life meant doing what he wanted to do for his son’s first motorcycle. Since owning that 1st Honda, in his heart, not living the way he thought others wanted him

to live. He didn’t want to become a bitter old man, looking back complaining about everything he never did. Within weeks of this realization, Padre picked up his 1st Harley Davidson while visiting his kid in Florida. After being off motorcycles for a long time, Padre decided that his first ride should be on the Inter-Coastal Highway, if that doesn’t prove a strong faith in God, I don’t know what does! He has owned 6 motorcycles in the 7 years that his mother- in- law has been living with them, as well as adorning his skin with some beautiful works of art and learning how to enjoy a few cocktails without losing control, truly enjoying every day of his life. Wanting to raise awareness of those in the church to the good side of bikers, Padre attends church in his jeans, a black HD t-shirt and his leather riding vest. Though he has never preached a sermon on Sunday, he has spoken at many weddings and funerals and along with Saint hosted marriage counselling and marriage enrichment workshops. Padre has been asked to pray over riders who have found themselves struggling for life due to an accident, Padre has spent countless hours with members of an M/C praying for a member in crisis. Padre is a proud member of the Teufelhunds Veterans Group based in Anamosa. You can usually find him any evening of the week at the local watering hole, enjoying a Rum and Pepsi, cracking jokes with the other patrons, no differently than you or I. Padre doesn’t preach the Bible, he enjoys living his life through it. Padre, we thank you for your service in the Air Force and your service to mankind! ~Pinky

LaVilla Mexican Restaurant 104 South 3rd Street Guthrie Center, Iowa 50115 641-332-2139 Open 7 Days A Week

Sometimes we don’t get the opportunity to choose our preference due to many outside influences (time constraints, location, etc.) but when allowed my preference, it is generally always the mom and pop shop! While you can find these in the larger metropolitan areas, they are often hard to locate and find their best advertisement to be word of mouth. Lynnette and I have had our best luck finding these in the smaller communities and areas off the beaten path. This month’s restaurant certainly qualifies for the off the beaten trail award! To get there you end up 2 blocks west of the four-way stop (intersection of Hwy 44 and Hwy 25) and 1/2 block south in Guthrie Center, IA. It will be the side street packed with vehicles! LaVilla Mexican Restaurant has been here for most of a year and is home to some of the best authentic Mexican dishes and drinks in the area. Lynnette and I have eaten here several times in the past but I wanted to wait until the “new” wore off to see if they would be able to make a go of it. You never know since they are off the main drag how well they will be received. Well almost a year later they are still here and just as busy, if not busier, than when they first opened! When you walk in the front door you’re met by one of the friendly wait-staff who will usher you to your seat. Menus are presented and our drink orders were taken with Lynnette ordering water and I chose my usual... lemonade. Our drink orders were delivered along with a basket of warm tortilla chips and a bowl of salsa. The salsa is very delicious with just a hint of kick of heat.

There are always two ways to look at anything, they call it preference. For instance, some people call a good day’s ride when you’ve covered an excess of 700 miles. Another considers 300 miles a good days ride. The first covered a significant amount of distance (probably most if not all on interstate), the second The menu is almost to the point of overwhelming with saw more of the its selection. I have noted that when I eat at an authenground they covtic Mexican restaurant I tend to gravitate to the combo ered (stopping to menu so I can get a larger variety of foods. I choose to eat the burrito and the enchilada with the salsa and mix the rice and beans together and eat them as a side dish. I could make an entire meal out of the beans and rice! There is just a touch of spice in the rice and refried beans are the best I’ve ever had! The burrito and enchilada are both stuffed with beef that is done to perfection and very tender! Hack off a chunk of either with your fork and swish it around in the salsa and you are in for a treat you won’t soon forget!!! Lynnette described her Taco Salad Fajita thusly: “Camouflaged under a thin layer of lettuce lies a swamp-load of perfectly sautéed onions, red and green peppers and rich strips of grilled steak swimming in a delicious, creamy sauce!” (Geez, I see who SHOULD be writing these!!!!) Before we left Lynnette ordered an order of refried beans to go (did I say they were good or what!!!!). Had to get them to go since we were both stuffed! All that food and the bill, with tip, came to less than $25!!! Great authentic Mexican food, awesome service, small town prices! That all adds up to a place you’ll want to stop at again and again!!!! LaVilla Mexican Restaurant in Guthrie Center, off the beaten path but certainly worth the side trip!!!! Until next month, ride safe and eat hearty! Q: Why doesn’t Santa have any children? A: Because he always wraps his package. Teacher: What does the Christmas tree stand for? Student: It would take too much room lying down. A young woman asks her mother, “Mom, how many kind of penises are there?” The mother, surprised, answers, “Well, daughter, a man goes through three phases. In a man’s twenties, a man’s penis iss like an oak, mighty and hard. In his thirties an aand n nd forties, it is like a birch, flexible but reliable. After his fifties, it is like a Christmas tree.” “A Christmas tree?” the young woman asks. “Yes, dried up and the balls are there for decoration only.” On the first Xmas, the first of three Wise Men stepped carefully into the stable but sank his golden slipper into a big pile of manure. ”Jesus Christ!” he yelled. The woman beside the manger turned to her husband and said, “Now, Joseph, isn’t that a better name for the kid than Irving? Santa: “So little girl, what would you like for Christmas?” Girl: “I want a Barbie Doll and a G.I. Joe.” Santa: “Doesn’t Barbie always come with Ken?” Girl: No, she only fakes it with Ken.” What does Father Christmas write on his Christmas cards? She said, that was fine, because she was tired too. And anyway, her husband, soon would be due. She said she would be on, the same time next year. Then ask, if I wouldn’t mind, meeting her here. Q: How are a Christmas tree and a priest alike? A: They both have ornamental balls.

One day, a little boy wrote to Santa Clause, “Please send me a sister.” Santa Clause wrote him back, “Ok, send me your Twas, the night before Christmas, and all through the house. mother.” Not a creature was stirring, except for my mouse. Other Stuff. Through the end of September 2015 Harley Davidson sold 170,500 motorcycles and trikes. During the same time period they recalled 312,000 vehicles. They also recalled an additional 210,000 vehicles in 2014. The surge in recalls coincides with a decline in Harley’s market share in the United States market for motorcycles with engine displacements above 600 cc’s. Harley’s share of the sales in the segments have decreased from 54% in 2013 to 50.3% last year and 47.5% so far in 2015.

What’s going on? U.S. House passes a long term Highway Bill. This is the first long term highway bill passed by the U.S. House in decades – a similar bill passed earlier this year in the Senate. For motorcyclists this is important for several reasons.

For those of us who care about the 2nd Amendment many things are “on the agenda” at the state level. Once of the most important is a bill sponsored by Senator Rick Bertrand and backed by the Iowa Gun Owner’s Association that would establish Iowa as a Stand Your Ground State. It would remove the responsibility to flee that exists within the state’s self-defense statutes. It’s the time of year when we can’t afford not to pay attention; too many things are at stake. Get involved, stay informed and make a difference.

b) Re-launches the Federal Motorcycle Advisory Questions? Email me at peter@riderpromotions.com Council. Every Council member must ride a motorcycle. The purpose of the council is to develop recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation on all things regarding motorcycles and motorcycle related infrastructure, on issues such as cable barriers, signage and pavement conditions. January 9, 2016 Five Flags Arena & Theater Dubuque, Iowa A different kind off bike and car show rolls into Dubuque on January 9, 2016. Why is this show different? Artists, film festival, live bands, swap meet, vintage apparel, furniture dealers, classic pin up girl contest, original art auction, vintage motorcycles, hot rods, and custom cars will all join in one group at the Five Flags Arena and Theater. More importantly, ALL gate proceeds go to help children with congenital heart defects. This show strives to bring back a specific time in history, a period before muscle cars, and before old cars were brought up to date with digital technology. Old school cool is the vibe of the event, and with the inclusion of the Fuel Injected Film Festival, spectators will be given entertainment that lasts all day long.

So, even if you don’t want to enter the contest, you can still get on stage and get a shot with all the other guys and dolls sporting the vintage look. There is no charge for this photo opportunity. There are also vendors and artists from around the country coming to be at the Retro Rewind Dubuque. Last year over 40 different vendors offered their own unique products to the show. Be sure to bring a pocket full of cash to support these different artists and entrepreneurs. In addition to the vendors, there will be an Icons of Pinstriping display and art auction.

Another aspect of the show that makes it unique is the car club and pro picks; each car club is able to present their club pick and present to a lucky car owner that is at the show. These car club pick trophies are usually handmade and are pieces of art-not just some hunk of plastic purchased at the trophy store. ABATE of Iowa is the premiere motorcycle rights organization in the state of Iowa and is considered the top in the country. On November 6th, 7th, and 8th Abate held their annual Iowa STEAM (Seminars to Educate and Motivate) at the Best Western Regency in Marshalltown, Iowa. It is a conference geared toward revitalizing the organization. With all their hard work guaranteeing this state has favorable legislation when it comes to the best interest of all motorcyclists in the state, and their educational and training programs, this is a weekend to recharge the batteries and unwind.

break. Four separate seminars going on at once in four separate rooms. The topics ranged from Rider education, to Share the Road, to caucusing, legislative, motivating your members, and even how to run for public office. All the seminars were presented by ABATE of Iowa members. Phenomenal group these people are.

Friday night was primarily for getting everyone registered and to check into their rooms. Or was it? They had a hospitality room set up with just about every kind of food a hungry motorcyclist could want. Food and drink were donations from the individual districts in the organization, along with a little cash for whatever may be needed. A DJ was set up in the pool area, which is where most of the attendees congregated. ABATE of Iowa also has their own inventory of t-shirts , hoodies, hats, flags for your bike , koozies, and anything you may need to enhance your wardrobe. They had a room set up with these items for sale at great prices. The DJ, Hospitality room, and ABATE products room, were all staffed by members of the organization. These people can do it all.

silent and live auction. The proceeds go to ABATEPAC. To learn what ABATEPAC is, go to www. abateiowa.org and check it out. If you ride a motorcycle in the state of Iowa, and are not a member, you can find out all the info you need on the website. While you’re there, go ahead and sign up as a member. You won’t regret it. The brotherhood and sisterhood of this organization is second to none. I was fortunate enough to witness this first hand. WOW!!!

Saturday night was the awards banquet. Individuals are honored for their hard work and dedication. Knowing this organization as I do, being the District 8 Coordinator, I feel each and every member deserves to be honored. How do you choose? The banquet was followed by a

Sunday morning was the Board of Directors meeting. This dedicated group of 23 board members consisting of the coordinator from each district, plus about a dozen state officers gathers every 2 months for these meetings. Being the District 8 coordinator, I attend these as well. This is where you see this grass roots organization conduct business. Very well organized. Things can get heated from time to time, but that’s expected from such a diverse set of opinions. All in all, a well-oiled machine.

Saturday morning was opening ceremony with four ABATE of Iowa members presenting the colors. I was fortunate enough to be asked to help with this. Dick “Slider” Gilmore was the guest speaker, with his Golden Hour presentation. It was describing how the first hour after a motorcycle accident the most crucial in the survival From one motorcyclist to all of you who ride in this state, of the victims are.
