There seems to be a disproportionate number of holidays in February. The shortest month and it seems to have the most holidays. We just had our TRMI crew Christmas party a couple of weeks ago, and let me tell you, these folks are awesome. We are spread out all over this great State, so to get a majority of the group together was a wonderful evening. This is a group of Iowa bikers that has come together to help make this magazine what it is. On a whim one beautiful sort of sunny day, Murph and I traveled to Mason City to check out a bike show and swap meet. Murph met Vernon and tt while we were at that bike show, and he also met them again when they were doing a Biker Down Response class for the Carroll Cycle Center HOG chapter. When he came home from that meeting, he was all kinds of excited, telling me all about Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa, and these people named Vernon and tt and how we were going to be helping them by delivering magazines. They needed some help with getting the magazines out, and we were interested in helping so it was a match made in Heaven. Soon after that, Vernon and tt asked us if we would like to cover the Iowa HOG event in Waterloo. What, I asked, you want me to take pictures of people that I don’t know? You want me to take pictures of people at a BIKER event? Then you want me to talk to people? Like the ones who won in bike shows, events in the rodeo, band members, not to mention all the OFFICIAL People who were running the show. I have always enjoyed writing, and I jumped in feet first and haven’t looked back! My new found passion helped me find that I really enjoy writing about the events that we cover. In fact, sometimes I like it too much, and the Editor (Vernon) has to tell me to quit writing books, and to leave room for the pictures. Murph is great at breaking the ice for me when we are at events and he works well at being my front guy. We make a great pair when we are out and about together. We hand deliver magazines every month, now in the Des Moines and central Iowa area. Sometimes we
will put out as many as 2,200 magazines in a two day stretch. Yes we sleep, but once the old man gets started, he doesn’t quit until it’s done! We have also covered some righteous biker parties, and/or rallies, as well as some of the most beautiful road trips in the name of charity. While enjoying all of this, we love to document all the fun with our camera, and some of them even make it into the magazine. Murph and I also do ad sales and are always available to talk to anyone where we deliver, or even outside of our area. We are always looking to expand to new places that are truly “Biker Friendly”. One of my favorite things about searching out new homes for the magazine is meeting new people and introducing them to the magazine. I love the response of people who have not seen it and how much they dig all the interesting content of the magazine. On that day in Mason City, Murph and I entered our first Tattoo Contest. Since that day, we have gone on to complete many “Firsts”. We got to experience Hawgstock, we have partied at Soldier, and we cheered on the drag racers at Conesville plus countless other events and runs. Along the way, our small staff of four at the magazine quickly grew to the family we have now; and a person couldn’t ask for better friends. As our magazine grows, so will our family. You see, it’s not just the staff that we consider family. Our readers and our advertisers are part of our family also. We have a wonderful thing going here, and we are all so excited to share it with everyone. The magazine is still young, over four years old, and growing every year. The old man and I are looking forward to more “Firsts” and a lot more years hanging with our Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa family. Annette Murphy

Psalm 107 tells us that “Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.”

A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month I will revisit each county as a featured article. I will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa. Howard County Iowa Howard County Iowa may not be the biggest county in Iowa, it may not have the most roads to travel in Iowa, it may not have the largest population, but what it does have are people with more Iowa and motorcycle riding pride then you will see in a lot of places! I traveled Howard County by car this month but look forward to doing it again this summer on a bike! I started off by heading north into the county on V58 and scooted right on up to the county seat of Cresco. This is where you will find Spiff Slifka, she works at the county tourism office downtown and she is an incredible wealth of information about her fare county. She can tell you about the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Beadle Park Train, Ellen Church (world’s first stewardess, actually brought on as a nurse to help ease the fliers fears) and Dr. Norman Borlaug. All of these are worth checking out however Dr. Borlaug warrants a little something extra! 14 - TRMI FEBRUARY 2014

He is the “Father of the Green Revolution”. His agricultural research developed new wheat varieties that transformed the production of wheat more then doubling the harvest saving billions from starvation worldwide. In 1970 he won the Nobel Peace Prize, 1977 the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2006 he won the Congressional Gold Medal . He is one of only seven people in the world ever to receive all three of these honors and he is from a little farm just west of V58 outside of Cresco Iowa. Under the guides of full disclosure…to head over to Dr. Borlaug’s historic childhood farm and school you will need to take about three miles of gravel.
After heading north out of Cresco on V58 we came to A23 because I wanted to see the Lidke Mill just north of Lime Springs. Lime Springs is a nice little town. What I really appreciate is the fact that they have signs all over town pointing you to where you want to go and what you want to see! Well I wanted to see the Lidke Mill so I headed north on V36. It is only a few miles but worth jumping off the regular route to see. Besides the beautiful historic mill and dam there is also a great park to stretch your legs. You can camp, fish or canoe. I enjoy county roads so I headed back into Lime Springs and grabbed A23 again and headed west to V26 and that took me north into Chester, an entertaining little border town. Now if you prefer traffic there is always Hwy 63, the Avenue Of The Saints, that will get you there as well. It was lunchtime and Laddy’s Bar and Grill came highly recommended. The town

is about three blocks long and in true form I had to stop and ask directions. I am really glad I did because it allowed me to meet TJ of TJ’s Custom Woods. He moonlights at the local gas station but his dry wit made me want to chat the afternoon away…however my tummy was rumbling so he gave me directions, “turn around, it’s one block that way” and off we went to Laddy’s. When we walked in there were two lovely ladies manning the joint and they attended to our needs post haste! We were fortunate to get there when we did because after chatting for a few minutes and giving our orders the place filled up like a small town public pool on a 105-degree day. The food was fantastic and plentiful. I did learn something new, when our meals arrived; I had the philly and waffle fries it came with sour cream, when I asked what “that was for” she said “it was for the fries”. I tried it; not my thing but the locals love it! Now it was time to head south via V26 and V18 towards Elma. On this leg of the tour you will see the Hayden Prairie, the largest natural prairie in Iowa. Further on down the way on V18 you will start to see stacks of rocks in the fields. Being born and bred here and having picked rock in many a field I could imagine a bored kid stacking up these rocks just for something to do to pass some time, however as I traveled further down the road I started to notice more and more of these formations and this prompted a call to Spiff who told me that it was “farmer art”. This was a conscious decision by the local farmers some decades old to add a little culture to their area. Mission accomplished!

I bought the jalapeno cheddar summer sausage, WOW! I had on my TRMI jacket and Cory Polashek a Thunder Cam veteran stepped out from the back room and struck up a conversation with me. He is a huge Harley fan and said if I had time I should stop over at his place, chat with his girl Michelle and check out what he had going on over there. I am so glad that I did because Michelle was so fantastic, so welcoming and kind to show me around their Harley wonderland. If you are a Harley fan and you are in Protivin and the garage is open stop in and say “Hell Yeah” to Cory and Michelle. It is people like them that make me want to do my job!

When it comes to art Howard County does not mess around. If you are feeling like playing your own personal game of “Where’s Waldo” you can get the brochure of The Statues of Howard County. Spread out all over you will find about forty-five bronze statues, mostly of children just waiting to be discovered. It is truly a countywide venture, all volunteer and all donated material. I cannot leave Howard County without talking about the people of and the tiny town of Protivin. First they have a HUGE Czech Days festival. I was minding my own business just walking through the boring humdrum of non-riding biker life in Iowa and I accidently stumbled into Cupid. That little bastard shot me with an arrow which landed squarely in my heart and it happened, I AM IN LOVE! She is a beauty, long, lean, perfectly curved, big ole set of jugs and when the light hits her, she sparkles. She is full of energy and when she hits high gear, you better hold on tight because it’s going to be one hell of a ride. She looks good in leather, never talks back and when I decide I need to twist one off, she responds.

Here at Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa, we have never been vague about our support for the Military. We feel a strong pull to support our troops, and to support Veterans of our Armed Forces as much as possible. This page is always dedicated to some aspect of Military support. The main gist of this page is to give props to a rider that is or has served. Other avenues for these pages have been to talk about things that are of interest to the Military Biker world. This month’s page has something to do with any and all current or past Military personnel. The Christmas season and the following months have always proven to be a tough time of year for many. Issues with depression, feelings of being alone, and even extreme me cases of people thinking that there is no reason to live prompted mpted this page this month. I saw numerous reports from around the country of Veterans that took their own lives this past holiday season. To me this is a travesty and is not acceptable. Men and women that have served, fought, and been scarred for life, in some instances, still feel that they have nowhere to turn. I did some digging and found d a program offered by the he Veterans Administration n that will hopefully combat some of these issues, and give Soldiers rs and Veterans a place to turn when in need. The program is called Make the Connection and is aptly named as that is exactly what the program is trying to do. It is an avenue for Veterans to connect with other Veterans, friends, family, information, resources, and solutions to problems that are affecting them. The campaign encourages Veterans and their families to “make the connection” — with information and resources, with the strength and resilience of Veterans like themselves, and with available resources of support. The success of Make the Connection depends on support from everyone who interacts with Veterans; community members around the country, Veteran Service Organizations, community-based groups, and health care providers who have direct contact with Veterans every day. Two weekends in the Iowa Biker life that I dig are Memorial Day weekend, and Labor Day weekend. These two weekends seem to be the opener and the finale for the biker season for the most part in Iowa. I know, many of you ride well before and after those dates, but these weekends seem to make people want to gather and party it up. In the past we went east for the first part of the weekend, and then ended in the west. We went from Kimballton to Conesville for a couple of days, and then ride almost clear across the state to go to Soldier. On a holiday weekend who would not want to hit a couple of parties and do a bit of riding. For us it usually ended up well over 800 miles and being able to see that much of this great state in one weekend is cool. There are some changes going on over east for the time being, so it looks like the only place to really go and gather in Iowa with bikers is in Soldier at the Midway Tavern’s Events. They have been hosting a Spring Fun Run, and a fall Soldier Valley Run for quite a number of years, and 2014 will be no different.
nestled in the Loess Hills of Iowa, welcomes bikers in with open arms. Not only does this town of less than 200 welcome us in, they literally let us stay pretty much about anywhere in town you can set up camp. They do not cordon off areas to put the bikers behind a fence; the whole town enjoys the celebration. The ball park area is good to go for campers and tents, some public areas around town house the same, and a lot of people even let tents set up in their yards and let us be “Soldierites” for a weekend. This is kind of a nice diversion from spots that look down on black leather like we carry the plague. The downtown area is fenced off for only bikes and people, and there is food, drink, vendors, and entertainment. Camp where you want and hang out in downtown Soldier with your new and old friends! The camping is all free, there is firewood available for campfires, and they now even have hot showers at the Midway. Everything you need right here in Soldier!

Both the spring and fall parties here make for an interesting time. At both events, the small town of Soldier,

The Spring Fun Run is a laid back little gathering that usually includes a Fun Run through the scenic Loess Hills, BBQ, and a street dance. Plenty to do for a day or two, awesome riding in the hills, and always good friends.

The fall party, the Soldier Valley Run is the big one though. This is Midway Tavern’s big shin dig, and a place to hang out with a few thousand of your closest friends. This year will bring a Battle of the Bands and a unique type of Fun Run with different routes to choose from in the Loess Hills to ride. The downtown area is teeming with bikes and bikers, food, great entertainment, and people that want to party and have a great time. Not that everyone hangs out on Main Street; there are plenty of folks that party at their camps all over town. All in all a great way to spend Labor Day weekend. Check out the events this year on May 24th and 25th, and then in the fall August 30th and 31st. See you there! Vernon

A little boy and girl are sitting in a sandbox playing. The little boy farts and it ruffles the sand a little. The little girl asks him, How did you do that? He says, You just gotta push real hard. Sometimes it takes a while. So the little girl starts pushing real hard and starts turning red. I was telling a girl in the pub about my uncanny ability to guess the day a woman was born just by feeling their breasts. “Really?” she said. “Go on then... A few miles later, huffing and puffing, he finally catches her and has his way with her. After they are through and she leaves, he thinks to himself, “I like the way this company does business.” The same girl shows up for the next two days and the same thing happens. On the fourth day he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost ten pounds, as promised. So, he calls the company and orders from them their 5 day/ 20 pound program. As expected, the next day there’s a knock at the door and there stands the most stunningly beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life, wearing nothing but running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, “If you can catch me, you can have me.” He’s after her in a shot. This girl is in great shape and it takes a while to catch her, but when he does, it’s worth every cramp and wheeze. She is by far the best he’s ever had. For the next four days, the same routine happens and much to his delight on the fifth day, he weighs himself and found he has lost another twenty pounds as promised! For those of you out there riding a 2007-2013 touring bike I have a great upgrade for you if you haven’t already done so. I’m talking about upgrading your stock compensator sprocket to a Screamin’ Eagle comp sprocket. The Screamin’ Eagle upgrades you to what the 2014 bikes use and with the bigger motors it is a much needed improvement. For those of you that do not know what the compensating sprocket is; it is the front sprocket in your primary case that goes directly onto your engine crank. This sprocket is what chain drives your transmission and so on. I know we had a few problems with these back in 07-10
