Here we are at the heart of the summer, the month of July, the month that we celebrate independence. It is hard to believe how quickly we went from cool, wet, rainy weather to hotter than can be. How can you not enjoy sunrise before six am and sunsets close to nine pm? It sure gives you a ton of daylight hours to do what you love to do, put on more miles! Fifteen hours of daylight per day affords us the opportunity to enjoy those morning rides and evening rides with much better visibility for the creatures that seem to lurk in the night for us on two wheels. Ride as much as you can and capitalize on the weather and the daylight hours. It will start to lessen by next month already, so take advantage while you can. Where do you go while you are enjoying your perfect riding weather? How about hit up a bike night or two! There are plenty of them out there to hit up, just look toward the back of the magazine in the summer months and right next to the FREE Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa EVENT LIST is the FREE Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa BIKE NIGHT LIST. Some of my favorite bike nights are the ones that are at least an hour ride. Who wants to fire up to go five miles to a bike night? Venture out and about and get to some more that are farther away. Utilize the longer days to ride a while, make an appearance at a bike night, and check out the scene and get home or to the home area before or at dark. Broaden you biker horizons and meet some new folks and hit some new spots, see some old friends, and just enjoy the freedom we enjoy as bikers to live our lives. July is also jam packed with events all around the state! If you cannot find something to do that twists your wick, then you are too damn picky! Poker and Fun Runs, concert series, motorcycle rallies, military support events, open houses, grand opening parties, motorcycle races, and so much more! Look in the magazine for the Event List to see what all is going on, check it out on our website, or look at the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Facebook page for weekly event updates. If you know of an event that is not listed here, feel free to email the event date, event name, and event starting location to Vernon@ thunderroadsiowa.com and we will get it listed. This
is all that we have room for on our FREE Event Listing, but if you want more space than that to promote your event, shoot me a message and we can get you hooked up with that as well! We try to have the most comprehensive list of biker events in the state, but we need your help keeping it as up to date as possible. Let us know what is going on and where so that we can share it with thousands of bikers across Iowa. July also brings the second half of the Tall Corn Run. April, May, and June are in the books, with three months remaining. It is never too late to get signed up and get a card! Get a FREE card, get to locations to Check In, and have chances to win prizes every month! Look on the TCR pages in the magazine to see where to get a card at the Registration/Check In locations, and then get your first Check In at that site. Hit up as many of the other spots as you can, up to once per week for multiple chances at winning. Every month there is almost $1,200 dollars worth of prizes given away from participating locations. On top of the thousands of dollars of monthly prizes, if you make it to the grand prize drawing at Okoboji Harley-Davidson on October 15th, all of your Check Ins from the summer turn into chances to win. TRMI will be drawing for a Biker Bar from Sandbothe Firestone in Griswold, three separate $800 paint gift certificates from Air Efex Custom Paint in North Liberty, a $2,500 paint gift certificate from Creative Concepts in Harlan, a 6X10 Wells Cargo Trailer form Fenders Cycle in Des Moines, and last but not least, a 2016 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim from Okoboji Harley-Davidson. Tons of prizes, tons of riding so get out and about to Check In Sites, and tons of fun. Ride safe and have fun on this summer long event. Have a safe and enjoyable July! Celebrate your independence on two wheels! Vernon and Melanie Schwarte Quote of the month: “According to a new survey, women say they feel more comfortable undressing in front of men than they do undressing in front of other women. They say that women are too judgmental, where, of course, men are just grateful. Robert De Niro
On the Cover For the Patriotic Month of July, we put the cutie pie Tammie posing with a RED, WHITE, and BLUE Panhead owned by Joe Chance. They are set in front of the Rocking Chair in Harlan, the featured business for the Roar Into Harlan Bike Night on July 21st. The folks at Roar Into Harlan Bike Night hold their bike nights on the 3rd Thursday of May-September, with a different theme every evening. July is Antique Bike Night, so bring out your vintage iron and join in on the fun at Roar Into Harlan! 4 - TRMI JULY 2016

CMA Notes
When Mark and I were a young married couple, we were pretty short on cash. Our idea of a big date was to swap babysitting with one of his sisters and go to a movie. Sometimes even a movie was out of the budget, so we’d go to the greeting card aisle in Wal-Mart and read all the funny cards we could find, sharing the especially good ones with each other. It might not sound like much, but we had a lot of fun just laughing together before we took off to find the cheapest place in town to get an ice cream cone. Naturally, this sad financial state meant that we drove junk vehicles. The one that I still remember with gritted teeth was an old custard-colored Dodge Aspen station wagon with wood on the sides. We hadn’t had it for too long before it started acting funny. Every time I’d slow down to turn a corner, the stupid thing would start sputtering and die. I discovered that if I shouted, “Quiet!” at our kids every time we approached a corner, I could hear the first cough of the motor. Then, if I caught it at just the right moment, I could feather the gas pedal like mad and baby it till we got around the corner far enough to give ‘er the gun and roar off. Not the best of solutions, I admit, but I was coping with the situation the only way I knew how.
money scraped together to get the car in with a mechanic. It was a huge relief when the dying problem disappeared and I could stop shouting “Quiet” at every corner. I hate to say it, but this is pretty typical of how we deal with our problems in life. It’s obvious to us that something is wrong, but we don’t even know where to begin to fix it, so the best we can to is just cope with the situation. Or maybe we may have a friend or acquaintance we can talk to who can identify what the problem is, but it’s still beyond our power to change anything. We all know that identifying the problem isn’t the same as fixing the problem and we get stuck in discouragement because there seems to be no fix available for us. Take heart, because John 3:17 tells us this: “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.” God isn’t just pointing out the problems; He has provided the fix through His Son, Jesus Christ. Our problem with God’s solution is that we usually want to hang on to part of our broken mess instead of giving it up to God. Mark 10: 17-27 tells of a rich young leader who comes to Jesus, wanting to know how to inherit everlasting life. Jesus has a bit of discussion with him and in the end tells him, “Go, sell everything you have, give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. Then, come, follow me.” Jesus knew that the young man had put all his trust in his riches rather than in God and yet He still loved the young man and showed him the way to everlasting life. But we are told that “The young man went away sad, because he had great wealth. “ This would be a bit like Mark taking our station wagon to the mechanic and then driving away with the car still broken because he didn’t want the mechanic to take the engine apart so he could get to the broken part. But how many of us do that to God? We want to hang onto the very thing that stands in the way of our fix because we can’t imagine life without it. Is your “thing” money? Your reputation? Your looks? Your toys? Give it up to God and take His fix, everlasting life in Jesus Christ. Blessings – Karla Mark and Karla Cornick are Area Reps with the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Find out more about CMA and God’s plan for you at www.cmausa.org .
In the meantime, Mark went to the library and began researching what the problem might be. After talking to a couple of gear-head friends he realized that even if he knew for sure what was wrong, we didn’t have the tools and shop needed to fix it. But at least they had helped him weed out a few of the possibilities, which gave him some idea of how expensive the repairs might be. We finally got enough 6 - TRMI JULY 2016

Promoting Motorcycling... Abate of Iowa…just what is Abate and why do we need it? Abate has a straightforward, easy to understand mission statement:
ABATE stands for A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education. ABATE works for you, the motorcycle enthusiast. ABATE is a non-profit organization. ABATE is a neutral organization that allows ALL riders to unite in brotherhood to safeguard our rights while remaining individuals with differing views.
motorcycling. Today, more than 3 decades later, many of our 50 states have SMRO’s (state motorcyclists’ rights organizations), a majority of these organizations are called ABATE. In 1986, many ABATE organizations came together at a “conference” if you will and began the process of SMROs working together. Eventually, this led to the establishment of the Motorcycle Rider’s Foundation (MRF) which is considered a Motorcycle Rights Organization (MRO) based out of D.C. This group of SMROs worked together to eradicate federal helmet law requirements, make sure motorcycles are part of transportation planning, as well as to ensure that motorcycles are allowed on all public roads.
So what is ABATE of Iowa up to all these years later? Well Currently ABATE is a strong supporter of the Rider Education Program. ABATE of Iowa, Inc. sponsors Iowa’s ABATE of Iowa believes that quality Motorcycle Rider all motorcyclists are brothers Education program that is with a common interest... administered by the Office RIDING FREE! of Driver Services of the Department of Transportation. So, with such a simple mission Iowa’s Basic Rider Course statement, seems like ABATE should be a pretty simple (BRC) and Returning Rider Basic Rider Course are both organization. Well nothing could be further from the truth. provided at various locations throughout the state of Thanks to Abate, and its 23 active districts throughout our Iowa, and instructors are Iowa-licensed, MSF-certified, great state, Iowa has remained one of only two states in the experienced motorcyclists. Why take the course? Well how United States without a helmet law. about because the largest percentage of motorcycle riders The concept of ABATE is believed to have originally begun involved in accidents have been either self-taught, or have been taught by family and friends. Whenever you are on with Lou Kimzey, editor of Easyriders magazine in 1972. He along with two wheels, you are extremely vulnerable. A motorcycle rider and passenger are far more likely to be injured in a other bikers and enthusiasts crash than cage drivers. Many of said accidents can be avoided if the rider knows when to zig and when to zag. recognized Bottom line…take a rider education course sponsored by that there was a distinct ABATE…It just may save your life. need for bikers to come Another cool project on ABATE’s plate is Share the Road. The objective of Share the Road is to make sure that together and dispute federal bikers are both seen and heard by providing “motorcycle awareness training to all drivers and soon to be drivers and state restrictions on on the road in Iowa. This training is intended to reduce accidents between drivers and motorcyclists by seeing, respecting, and understanding a motorcyclist’s needs and rights on the highway.” This is an incredibly awesome idea, because growing up; most people are taught to look for other cages….not Th under Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook www.thunderroadsiowa.com 16 - TRMI JULY 2016
necessarily motorcycles. Training individuals to see and hear motorcycles is just as important as learning to spot cages. A game I like to play on drives with my kids is count the motorcycles…by trying to count the most twowheeled vehicles on a trip, I am hoping that my kiddos will be alert to ALL vehicles on the road long before they are in possession of their own modes of transportation. Everyone can benefit from the Share the Road Presentation, and you can view it on the website 24-7 at abateiowa.org.
ABATE…who fight for our biker rights every day. Show ABATE some support and enjoy the live entertainment, prizes, vendors, and so much more that they have secured for this year’s rally. Advance tickets are available, but don’t worry…they will always make room for you in Freedom Park. ABATE officers and members are some busy people, planning our favorite party, and for giving us the choice of wearing a helmet on our head…and for that we thank you. Thank you to the organization for putting bikers first and ensuring that we continue to RIDE FREE!
ABATE also has a state seminar for its officers and members, called S.T.E.A.M. S.T.E.A.M. stands for “Seminar To Educate And Motivate” and usually takes Melanie J Schwarte place in November. Its purpose is to help educate officers Melanie@thunderroadsiowa.com and members on their duties as well as to help renew enthusiasm and the driving force behind current goals. These workshops are open to all ABATE members free of cost. Information about the next S.T.E.A.M seminar can be acquired from the ABATE of Iowa state office. Last but not least…ABATE is the driving force behind an annual destination for Iowa bikers. A celebration that riders look forward to each and every July…The Freedom Rally. This year the Freedom Rally will be held June 30th through July 2nd at the ABATE’s Freedom Park. For anyone who hasn’t been to the rally, the property is located 3 miles East of Algona on Highway 18, then 4.3 miles north on county road P56 or 160th Street. This event is HUGE, and if you are looking for a place to be, where the right to be yourself…a biker in all his/her glory then this is the place to be. 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 26 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa. Palo Alto This month’s county Palo Alto, is located in northwest Iowa between Algona and Spencer. The c county intersected by highways 18 and 4. It is home to about 10,000 residents and is similar iin size to many Iowa counties at 569 square miles. It is known as an Irish settlement area, with the county seat of Emmetsburg. Palo Alto County is named for an important battlefield victory in the Mexican War, which was fought on May 8, 1846. The first settlement in the county was at West Bend. In 1857, some men of Palo Alto County joined the relief expedition from Fort Dodge to the scene of the Spirit Lake Massacre. West Bend provided food and shelter for both the military group and survivors of the massacre. In 1875 Emmetsburg was established as the county seat. We began our tour into Palo Alto County on the southwest corner and headed northbound on a decent county pavement road, N28. We rolled into the little unassuming burg of Ayrshire and rolled around a little bit. This quaint little town has a few people, all of which seem to wave and be friendly! A little café on the main drag was open and seemed relatively busy for a Sunday morning. West of town a few miles is one of the counties five natural lakes, Silver Lake. We looked for Silver Town and Joe Dirt, but they were nowhere to be found. Ayrshire’s claim to fame is having the youngest mayor in the USA; Jody Smith was nineteen when he was elected mayor.
26 - TRMI JULY 2016
Next on the list was continuing north on N28 and then west on Highway 18. We came in to the town of Ruthven. It is a nice and friendly town that is split by the railroad which may give it more size than anticipated. When pulling into town there is a convenience store and right across the street is the Highway Café and a bait shop. Ruthven is home to the July event, Bully Bullhead Weekend held the weekend after the 4th of July weekend. Lost Island Lake is right north of town, so the town has many businesses that cater to the lake life and residents located there. It seems to be a nice little lake with the lack of major commercialization of the lakes just to the west in the next county. The Nature Center is located on the east side of the lake and offers some very pretty views and one of the coolest little roads in the county with a canopy of trees that almost makes a tunnel. We then rode east and north to Graettinger. Sadly enough the one place we wanted to check out was closed on Sundays. We have heard people rave about the Graettinger Drive Up, but will have to make another trip to check it out. Graettinger is the location of the oldest Labor Day celebration in the state of Iowa. Each year, the town celebrates with a parade, carnival, street dance, variety show, queen coronation, raffle drawing and various other events. Then we rode east a short jaunt and south on a county road N40 to arrive in Emmetsburg. As the county seat, it is the largest town in Palo Alto County and is sort of unique in how it is set up. A long narrow lake called Five Island Lake is a center point in town. Much of the town is located on the banks and around the lake. Residents are awarded many opportunities

for recreation and living in town and with a small lake. Emmetsburg has capitalized on the location of the lake, the highways, and the railroad to form a busy community with plenty to do and industry to keep it going. The Blarney Stone Courthouse Square, on the edge of the county courthouse lawn, is a statue of the county’s namesake, Robert Emmet, stands next to a Blarney Stone brought to the area by a resident. Paddy Horan Solberg was an Irish resident of Palo Alto County and brought this stone to Emmetsburg in 1966 in a suitcase. Also located in town is an Aluma Trailer manufacturing facility. These Iowa made trailers can be purchased through Aluma dealers, such as Nishna Valley Cycle in Atlantic. It is always nice to support Iowa based businesses. Also in Emmetsburg is a satellite location of Iowa Lakes Community College. They have many different focal points in higher education as well as being the first Wind Energy & Turbine Technology program. They have been on the forefront of this earth friendly technology, and why not educate and utilize the technology right here in Iowa; that on top of powersports and power equipment technology, just to name a few are taught at ILCC. On the way out of town to the south, Emmetsburg has a very nice and unique Veterans memorial. It is visually noticeable on Highway 4 just south of the railroad tracks and worth a stop to check it out.
of the Redemption is the inspiration and life work of Fr. Paul Dobberstein (1872-1954), a Catholic priest who settled in West Bend around 1902. Well worth a visit when you are in the area.
After West Bend, we rolled west to Mallard which is home to Midwest Toys of Iowa, and the largest duck in the state! It only stands to reason that the town named Mallard should have a giant decoy on the highway as We rolled east though Cylinder on Highway 18 and then south down to Rodman. After a little bit of a detour you come into town. I sure hope it does not really draw any other ducks that size into town. That would wreak due to road closings because of bridge construction, havoc on the locals way of life I am sure. With a long we rolled down the county line border road Highway day roaming around Palo Alto, we decided to roll south 15. We rolled into West Bend, which is mainly in Palo Alto, with a little bit of the town in neighboring Kossuth. toward home. This is home to some very more of Iowa. Despite the fact that a lot of places were interesting items from early settlement days and life closed on Sundays, we will before “smart” devices, or definitely be back! dream about. I lucked out that it was along a RIVERSIDE RACEWAY only busy highway with great visibility.” Now Wenck has WINTERSET IOWA After racing motocross his entire life Tony Wenck set out on a mission to raise the bar for local Motocross tracks in Iowa. With a little money he earned from racing he bought a piece of property on the Eastern edge of his father’s farm along Middle River south of Winterset. He had a vision to transform the soggy “not good for much” field along highway 169 into what is known today as Riverside Raceway. The track has been in operation for sixteen years however Tony only ran it for the first three before selling it to move on to other endeavors in the motorcycle industry. It changed ownership again since he sold it but a part of Wenck always wished he still ran it. Last year he bought the business (and property) back and has big plans going forward. In addition to buying his old motocross track he also purchased additional adjoining land to offer Flat Track races starting in July. “The first time I went to an AMA Pro Flat Track event I was standing on the infield leaning on the guard rail in turn one. They came towards me so fast I was shocked! I was instantly a huge fan. Flat Track racers are bad ass and I’m stoked to bring a facility to Iowa for fans and racers to enjoy.” Construction is underway at Riverside and fans can check out both Motocross races and Flat Track races for one ticket price. “You can come down the driveway and pay one price to watch both types of racing. There should never be a dull moment.” Riverside Raceway is considered one of the premier Motocross tracks in the region with nearly a mile long course and has dirt Motocross racers cherish. “When I decided where I wanted to build my track I based it off the dirt alone. It’s a loamy sandy mix. The bikes create ruts that people in other parts of the country 32 - TRMI JULY 2016
his sights set on a new challenge with the Flat Track crowd. “I think a quarter-mile track is about perfect for the fans and riders. It’s not too big that newbie’s are intimidated to try it yet the fast guys will be able to put on a good show.” In addition to a ton of dirt work, bleachers, new concessions, and viewing areas are being brought in just for the Flat Track portion of the facility. The first Flat Track races will be in conjunction with their Motocross races scheduled July 23-24, then September 2425, and wrapping the season up October 15-16. ABOUT FLAT TRACK Flat Track is the oldest form of motorcycle racing in America and the sport is on an uptick nationwide and for a few reasons. Harley Davidson has ruled the famous mile-long tracks across the country for the past several decades. Now other manufacturers like Kawasaki are getting involved and they’ve enjoyed some real success over the past couple years. With Kawasaki and other motorcycle brands being competitive brings new fans. Another reason the sport is gaining popularity is the newly formed Super Hooligan class featuring basic street legal bikes with minimal modifications. In some states people actually ride their bikes to the races and sign up. This is something Wenck will offer in Winterset at Riverside Raceway and he thinks it will be a big draw. “Guys like famous bike builder Roland Sands are giving Flat track a shot in the arm when they travel the country on these Hooligan bikes. We’ll offer a Hooligan class too with a relaxed rules package so anyone can get involved without breaking the bank. Craigslist is full of old cheap street bikes and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s one of our biggest classes in a year or so.” WHAT TO EXPECT There’s nothing in the world like going to the races. Riverside Raceway has bleachers you can sit in, or bring your favorite lawn chair. Concessions are available but you can bring your cooler. You can even bring a grill and make a day of it. You can camp all weekend at no additional charge and the gates open on

Friday afternoon with racers and fans filing in all weekend. On Saturday the Motocross races kick off at 9am and typically run until 4pm or so with motorcycles only. The ATV’s take the Flat Track course at 9am as well and will finish up early afternoon. Then the motorcycle Flat track will be the center of attention until the evening hours. Sometimes they have bands on Saturday night when the races are over. On Sunday another round of Motocross kicks off at 9am lasting again until about 4pm. The Flat track races will have motorcycle and ATV classes running back to back instead of all ATV’s then all motorcycles like they do on Saturday. What’s the coolest part? You can watch all this for $10/day or $17 for a weekend pass. Race Dates leŌ for this season are July 23-24, September 24-25, and October 15-16. All I can say is “WOW” how the hell did July get here so quickly! Seems like just a few days ago Iowa Bikers were anxiously waiting for the riding season to begin and now suddenly it is in full swing. For you nonbelievers check out the Thunder Roads Event List it is loaded with great rides all around state. If that doesn’t make your ass itch for some seat time, the pages are also filled with plenty of riding destinations that proudly support and promote the biker lifestyle.
Another thing that makes riding in Iowa super cool is the ever changing sites and smells. Right now every thing is green, vibrant, alive and smelling fresh. It won’t be long before these colors and smells will change, and then they will change again. So you can actually ride the exact same route all season long and experience something different each time. That sounds rather boring, but is very handy for those of us who have no idea which buttons to push on that fancy GPS thing.
In preparation of Big Daddy TRMI breathing down my neck to get this article submitted. I decided to get out and enjoy what I call “my monthly”, think about it this is a biker rag! If I have to explain beyond that you wouldn’t understand. The entire ride is dedicated to sucking in fresh air while trying to convince my sick mind to focus on finding something to write about that will make Big Daddy happy. I was cruising down the Iowa roadways, legs stretched out on the highway pegs, the road was smooth and rolling fast, when my warped brain exploded like a short fused M-80.
During my monthly, I passed a fellow rider who offered up a friendly wave as we briefly shared the road. As I continued on my journey, my mind began to wander about the passenger hiding behind him. I tiny little person sporting a bright pink helmet which matched the tiny little pink shoes that were stretched out just far enough to land on the passenger pegs. Iowa law reads, passenger age restriction “NONE”, the passenger must have a seat and foot pegs. The way I read Iowa law even the helmet on that tiny little head is optional. Now before my distorted views of life instigates a hit man looking up my address. I want to Most Iowa Bikers, myself included; frequently bitch make sure everyone understands that I appreciate the and moan about the temperature, wind speed, rain, fact that the tiny little head was encased in safety. My four wheelers and pot holes. If you haven’t heard it point is that Iowa riders are very fortunate! We have yet you better start learning sign language, those very few laws to abide by which makes the freedom loud pipes might save your life but you’re going deaf. to express ourselves and the lifestyle we choose far Despite all the negative things that hinder Iowa riders’ more enjoyable than many of our neighboring states. ability to do what we live for year round, I suddenly Which is just another of the many reasons why I enjoy realized, I absolutely love riding in Iowa! riding in Iowa. The roadways of Iowa offer up about as many choices for riding as the TRMI magazine. We have a very simple but yet extensive interstate system that can quickly get you to any part of the state. We are blessed with a number of nice, rolling smooth four lane highways which also get you where you want to go rather easily. There are plenty of two lane highways, many of which have a slow moving traffic lane which are handy for encouraging other motorists to get the hell out of our way. Lastly the state is littered with paved county roads; which are hiding some of the discrete off the beaten path places that Iowa has to offer. So no matter where your wheels are headed there are plenty of routes to get you there.

I recently read an article about a woman that allows her helmeted 9 year daughter to ride home from school as a passenger on the motorcycle of her boyfriend whose resume includes 20 years experience as a motorcycle safety course instructor. Apparently some “do gooder” has decided that this single mom should be charged with child endangerment. I wrote her a letter encouraging her to move to Iowa because that shits legal here. Whatever route you choose and whoever you met along the way, enjoy the ride. Shifty LaRue

“Let’s talk about your boots” I’m starting this article out with the assumption that you, as a motorcycle owner with a brain and a bike, wear boots when you ride. If you don’t, we’re already off to a bad start. For example, I know two very credible bikers that are each missing a big piece of a foot from riding accidents, and they both had good boots on at the time. There is no reason to board a motorcycle for the purpose of riding without wearing proper footwear, to include a boot or work shoe of sufficient construction to prevent serious injury to your feet in the event of a fall or wreck. Last summer I saw a guy on a pretty cool old shovel head chopper with a long girder front end. I was going to come up and talk to him about it, when I noticed he was going to ride away on it in a pair of flip-flops. That’s not an easy bike to ride even when wearing proper riding attire. I wouldn’t even try to move it around in the garage in flip-flops. I lost any respect I had for him, and didn’t care if he built the bike in prison and smuggled it out in the mail piece by piece after that. If you ride in flipflops, you’re a fool, no matter what you throw your leg over. Enough said there. I personally favor a pair of engineer’s boots, a tall lace up design with a lug sole. Smooth bottom boots might be just the ticket in a riding arena on top of your favorite roping horse, but out on the roads you need tread when the roads get wet or oily. There is no worse feeling than planting a foot at a red light or stop sign, only to figure out there is oil under your boot and you are losing the battle with gravity. Been there, done that. Lug soles only for me thanks.
So why is this guy writing about this in Iowa? Here’s why- let’s talk about Doug. He’s a longtime friend of mine who was an excellent rider. He put on a pair of “garage boots” last summer. You know the ones, the dusty ones you put on to mow, lay sod or go to the landfill. When he did, he got a nasty surprise. He was bitten by a Brown Recluse spider, and to put it mildly, his life will never be the same. We’ll get back to his situation in a minute, but let’s talk about the Brown Recluse and why this matters to Iowans. This spider has not typically been a problem in Iowa in the past. We can debate forever about the cause, but the weather has changed. This spider has moved north of it’s typical habitat, and it’s ready to ruin your life. As the name implies, it’s a recluse. It likes to hide in dark places, and your boots couldn’t be a better home for that. When Doug got bit last year, he had a really bad reaction. Not that anybody has a good Brown Recluse bite, but his was worse. A bite from this spider can often result in the need for a skin graft, that’s how bad the poison is, it literally ruins your flesh. Doug took a dose internally as well, and that’s where his story really gets scary. Wherever the poison went last year, his immune system is attacking this year, because that’s what immune systems do. Unfortunately, that means it is attacking Doug, and he’s quite literally falling apart. When we rode together in the past, Doug was a marvel of balance and speed. He went by me once on his Road Glide so fast I thought my bike had stalled. He rode Glide all of 9 miles this year, and has decided it was probably his last ride, ever. He’s losing control of his hands and feet, can lose his place in a sentence, and is dropping weight daily. He gave me permission to write about his situation simply to prevent anybody else from suffering the same fate.
But since we’re on the topic of boots, I’m going to throw a curve at you- How do you store your boots and what do you So please, take a good look in your boots before you put do before you put them on? I bring this up for an important them on. In my case, the boots I ride in are used just for that reason. As many of you regular readers know, I spent a long purpose. The rest of the time they are in a dark closet. I bet time in Arizona. We had a practice there of dumping out your many of you do the same thing with your motorcycle boots. shoes before you put them on. The first ride will be led by a highly decorated United States Navy SEAL and will leave at noon from the Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf, travelling to Big Barn Harley-Davidson in Des Moines. The second ride offered leaves at 1 p.m., and will also be led by a highly decorated United States Navy SEAL. This ride will take a scenic tour of the Des Moines area leaving from Big Barn and ending back at the dealership later in the afternoon in order to meet up with the ride that started in Bettendorf. Once the rides end, the festivities will begin (somewhere around 4-ish). Big Barn Harley-Davidson is opening up their grounds for this huge event that will include food, drink, music, and local bands. Don’t forget that the United States Navy SEALs from SEAL Team 6 will also be on hand for the party! The Navy SEALs will be the special guests, so take some time to hear them talk, get some pictures with them, or just have a great time for a great cause! It is sure to be an action-packed day of fun and patriotism that you won’t want to miss. Curious about what kind of bad asses you might meet? Bar Hours: Monday - Thursday 10am - 10pm, Friday Saturday 10am to 2 am, Sunday 11am - ? Kitchen Hours: Monday - Friday 11am - 1:30pm & 5pm – 9pm, Saturday 11am – 9pm, Sunday 11:30am - 7pm Some of the best riding in western Iowa is in the Loess Hills, and the city of Onawa is located smack dab in the middle of those hills. Just off of Interstate 29 on Highway 175, is Onawa, the home of Suds n Jugs. This unassuming place sits on the east end of the main drag, Iowa Avenue, which is also Highway 175. SnJ is located on the south side of the road, just west of the railroad tracks. Emily is the owner of the place, and she sure makes sure that locals and travelers alike are treated like friends and family. They serve anything from bar type munchies to some killer steaks and prime rib. This particular day that we stopped in we were grabbing some lunch on the way through riding the hills. Sometimes nothing beats a good sandwich and taters and this day was one of those days! Of the three of us at the table, we had a good variety of options to try out. A bacon cheeseburger with all the fixins with a side of pepper jack bites was for one of us. The bun was soft and fresh, and the burger was cooked to perfection, but still plenty juicy. They use a decent blend of ground beef to offer a flavorful sandwich topped with all of the right accompaniments. The pepper jack bites are one of my favorites with that cheese ball flavor and a little kick of pepper.
is the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. Their Phillies come with onions, peppers, and mushrooms, but can be ordered without any one of those items if you don’t care for them. They don’t just throw a bag o’ veggies on the flattop and call it good, they look, taste, and smell like the real deal. The seasoning on the beef is spot on with the right amount of salt and pepper for flavor, but not overpowering. The hoagie is hearty enough to stand up to the fillings in the sandwich, with a slightly crunchy exterior and slightly chewy interior that holds it together well. It is the size of sandwich that is almost difficult to pick up, and could be eaten with a knife and fork, but who in the hell wants to do that? Pick it up, eat it like you are supposed to, and just ask for an extra napkin or two. It is by far the best Philly I have found in the state of Iowa, and well worth the trip, no matter how far that may be. Suds n Jugs offers evening specials every day, with a prime rib special on Saturday evenings, Alicia’s Mexican Food on Fridays, New York Strip Steak on Thursdays, Sirloin and Shrimp on Wednesdays, Ribeye steak on Tuesdays, and Burger night on Mondays. Check out their lunch or supper specials, or just stop in to have a cold one! Tell Emily and crew that Thunder Roads said hey, and that we will be back soon for a Philly! If you happen to stop in to check it out before September 30th, make sure to grab your Tall Corn Run card and Check-In while you are there! Suds n Jugs is a prime Check-In site and a great place to grab a great bite to eat and a cold beverage!
Next around the table was the hand breaded chicken sandwich. Looking at the size of this thing though, I wonder how many chickens they meant! I guess this place wants to be known for the size of the breasts they have. Literally, you could order an extra bun and have two sandwiches without a problem. The hand breading is golden brown and delicious and cooked just right Standing in for Big Little, Vernon Schwarte. with the chicken breast coming out moist and juicy but completely cooked. When did you start smoking?” Johnny replies, “Right after the first time I had sex.” “Right after the first time you had sex!? thee man exclaims. When was that?” Little Johnny ponders, “Gotta’ say I honestly ly don’t remember….I was drunk”.

As he was driving his truck through the desert, the truck broke down. After waiting by the side of the road for about three hours, he waved another truck down and offered a good ole’ boy named Bubba $500 to take the penguins to the State Zoo for him.The next day, the first truck driver arrived in town and saw Bubba crossing the road with the 100 penguins walking in pairs of two, directly behind him. The first truck driver jumped out of his truck and said, “What’s going on? I gave you $500 to take these penguins to the damn Zoo!” Bubba boastfully replied, “I did take them to the Zoo, but I had alot of money left over, so now we’re going to see a Disney movie.”
A flat-chested young lady read an article in a magazine that stated Dr. Bumbutu in Africa could enlarge your breast without surgery. So she decided to go to Dr. Bumbutu to see if he could help her. Dr. Bumbutu advised her, ‘Every day after your shower, rub your chest and say, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies!’ She did this faithfully for several months, and to her utter amazement she grew a terrific D-cup rack! One morning she was running late, got on the bus, and in a panic realized she had forgotten her morning ritual. Frightened she might lose her lovely boobs if she didn’t recite the ritualistic rhyme, she stood right there in the middle aisle of the bus, closed her eyes and said, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies.’ A guy sitting nearby looked at her and asked ‘Oh! Are you a patient of Dr. Bumbutu’s?’ ‘Yes I am.. How did you know?’ He winked and whispered, ‘Hickory dickory dock...’
Ever wonder what a man’s ultimate embarrassment might be? I’d have to say it would be running into a brick wall with a good stiff erection......and breaking his nose. And turn about is fair play...A woman’s would have to be standing on the scales and literally having to reach down and separate her sagging boobs, just so she can read the numbers.
Two little Southern girls were sitting on the front of a grand, plantation-style Georgia home. One was excessively rich, the other humble and poor. The one little rich girl opens her arms wide as she sits in her perfect hand-sewn, imported silk dress and exclaims, “my Daddy owns all this land..... as far as the eye can see, and then thousands of miles even after that”. The other little girl, sitting and rocking away A new Priest at his first mass was so nervous he could in her chair in her rolled up bib overalls and tattered teehardly speak. The other little girl says, “we tried to buy a pony once but they wanted too much, but the fact your Daddy owns all them horses, that’s nice”. The one little rich girl is getting really upset that the poor girl is taking everything in stride so she declares, “My Daddy sent me to Charm School and I was taught manners and etiquette by the world’s most charming, aristocratic women”. The other little girl says, “that’s nice, My Daddy scraped together almost 6 months worth of savings and I went to Charm School myself. The little rich girl bout’ chokes as she sputters out, “Oh, really, and what prey tell did they teach the likes of you in Charm School?” and the little poor girl stares directly in the rich girl’s eyes and casually replied, “they taught me how to say “that’s nice” instead of F*#* You!”. A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around her family dairy farm since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation. When canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery stores in approximately the 1940s, she read an advertisement offering $5,000 for the best slogan. The producers wanted a rhyme beginning with ‘Carnation Milk’ is best of all. She thought to herself, I know all about milk and dairy farms, I can do this! She sent in her entry, and several weeks later, a black limo pulled up in front of her house. A man got out and said, ‘Carnation LOVED your entry so much, we are here to award you $2,500. even though we will not be able to print it, it was a purely genius marketing slogan”. “Carnation milk is best of all, no tits to pull, no hay to haul, no buckets to wash, no shit to pitch, just poke a hole in the little son-of-a-bitch.” Q: When do you kick a midget in the balls? Don’t follow the herd. Unless you are the lead dog, the view never changes. Never blindly trust anyone. Ever. Its only money we can make more only goes so far. The only two things you really own are your name and reputation. Protect them at all cost. Nobody can take ’em away, but nobody can fix it for you either.
The Final Report
Respect isn’t free, it has to be earned. What you get for free has little value. If you believe that you will win, or believe that you will lose, you are right. “Can’t” is a fool too lazy to try. Be hopeful, look for the best, but always be prepared for the worst. Finally, the one I learned from my dad many years ago… If a job is once begun, do not leave it ‘til it’s done, be it great or be it small, do it well or not at all.
In the course of doing my job, I see a lot of things, meet a lot of people, and see how they live. I like to think that over Any parting shots? the years I’ve learned some things. One of the things I’ve learned is that I can’t do everything, no one can. Family peter@riderpromotions.com responsibilities and the state of some ongoing issues force me to cut back some of my commitments. Therefore, this will be my last article. That being the case, I would like to share with you some of the other things I’ve learned. To be successful you need focus, commitment, passion, and most importantly you have to outwork and out think your competition. Competition is good, and it brings out the best in people. That’s why competitive sports are important. It’s also why nobody should ever get a trophy just for showing up. Somebody wins and somebody loses, period. I think it’s important for people to learn both. Life is a competition, only strong survive. As a society, we simply can’t continue to reward laziness. Working for what you have is what made this country great. People who refuse to work or don’t try to find work deserve to have less. America is home to the richest poor people in the world.

avenue of the saints ST CHARLES BIKE NIGHT W do you have going on the third Saturday of each What month? During riding season, when the sun is shining, m II’m sure your answer in some way involves two wheels. Do you like fun? How about cold drinks on a hot day? D Maybe you just like socializing with other two-wheel M aaficionados. Well if you said yes to any of these, then I have the place for you to be…St. Charles Bike Night. Festivities are in full swing from 5 p.m. til 9 p.m. We F hhad the pleasure of attending recently, and I can say for ssure that we will be back. Avenue of the Saints picked up this prime bike night A aand ran with it. Located on St. Charles Road, Avenue of the Saints has TONS of space, an amphitheater for concerts, cold beer, hot chicks, and a great menu if you need some vittles. I need to mention, that getting there is a cakewalk as well. Only 15 minutes South of Des Moines, you can get there via interstate if you’re in a hurry, or take the back roads and enjoys a little scenic bliss. Either way, the ride is smooth. If you happen to find yourself ready to head for St. Charles and Mother Nature isn’t cooperating….not to worry. If a Saturday ends up getting rained out, they have rain dates on Sundays (noon-5p.m.) so you can spend your Sunday Fun-day at Avenue of the Saints. Regardless of the day, make sure you stop by at least once and check it out…we’re pretty sure St. Charles will quickly become a favorite on your bike night list!
