Welcome to June 2017 and the 85th issue of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa under our watch. June marks our 7th anniversary as the first issue we published was June of 2010. We are starting our 8tth year of publishing Iowa’s Biker Magazine that has always been “About Iowa, For Iowa, and From Iowa” and wanted to say thank you to the sponsors and supporters, the readers, and the dedicated TRMI staff that make this thing work every month. Without all of you we could not do this and be the voice of Iowa’s bikers and the source for information about the motorcycling community in our great state. We all love to see where this thing has come from and where we are today. We have come a long ways.

Joe needed to relocate to Iowa, and wanted to be in the center of Iowa, so he chose to rent a place in State Center. They set up shop and started up Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa with the first issue by Joe Matthews on the shelf for the December 2009 issue. In early January of 2010, Joe got a hold of Paul at Hawgstock and asked for a press release or any other photos or information on the rally. Paul asked that I write up something and submit to Joe and I did. Joe liked the article and then asked if I could check out this business or that and With the great levels of gratitude that make sure this write some more articles. CMA Notes

If you are involved in the smartphone world at all, you’re probably aware of Facebook and how it has influenced the way people communicate.

And even more it is changing the way people live their lives.

One of the original experiences in motorcycling, gypsy tours are gatherings of riders from all over the country, converging upon a single destination. One group that organized these kinds of events still to this day is the American Motorcycle Association. The AMA National Gypsy Tours brings like-minded riders together to enjoy the camaraderie of motorcycling, often in a location of particular beauty, historic significance and/or importance to the sport. Gypsy tours originated before the 1920s and the term has been mostly but not entirely replaced by rally or run. The term gypsy was used because the riders would travel long distances and often sleeping in tents around a campfire along the way much like the Hollywood stereotype of gypsies. Some smaller gatherings would converge on a single place as the end point and final gathering for the event. Sometimes these types of events involve vintage motorcycles and their riders.

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America has many different chapters and local meets and Road Runs, and also a national level Road Run for the distinct purpose of getting riders of vintage motorcycles together.

The event started on July 3rd and they kept gaining steam through the 4th of July festivities. A small police force of one chief and six officers were the only security for all 9,500 people that called Hollister home that weekend. With only so many places to sleep, camping areas were overwhelmed with bikers sleeping on the ground in the city park even. The image portrayed by the news media at that time was so negative and so severe that the AMA had a press release stating that 99% of the people at their events were god fearing and family oriented. The other 1%er were hard riding, hard partying, non-mainstream type people, the outlaws if you will. Thus the term 1%er was born. Some of the early bikers embraced the term and decided to call themselves 1%ers. That definition of that term has been changed and twisted by the media and law enforcement, but still holds true that 1%ers LIVE the biker lifestyle and are more than weekend riders.

The gathering in Hollister, also known as the Hollister Riots also inspired the 1953 movie “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando.

Life Magazine’s nationwide influence was extensive in the early television years, and The Chronicle’s photos helped create the biker image seen in countless Hollywood depictions. Most of these depictions of bikers and the biker lifestyle still hold true in this current day and age. The television show “Sons of Anarchy” is proof of that. The “outlaw” life on the screen is far from reality.

Many different events throughout history forever change the way things are perceived in the world. How they are reported can greatly influence the public perception of an event and almost create the history in the context of the media. Different events that have forever impacted the world are things such as the assassination of JFK, Watergate, Vietnam, and for bikers, this was the events of

the AMA Gypsy Tour in Hollister in 1947. The events and reporting of such created and/or changed how the country looked at bikers and the motorcycle community. On the other side of the coin, there were many opinions, eye witness accounts, and experiences that were quite contrary to the newspaper and magazine coverage.

Here are a few of the excerpts from eyewitnesses to the events in Hollister that weekend. Catherine Dabo and her husband owned the best hotel in Hollister. When bikers were being demonized in the media, she always defended them. “My husband and I owned the hotel, which also had a restaurant and bar. It was the first big rally after the war.

Our bar was forty feet long, and a biker rode in the door of the bar, all along the bar, and through the doors into the hotel lobby! We were totally booked. Every room was full, and we had people sleeping in the halls, in the lobby, but they were great people; we had more trouble on some regular weekends! I was never scared; if you like people, they like you. Maybe if you try telling them what to do, then look out! The motorcycles were parked on the streets like sardines! I couldn’t believe how pretty some of them were. It was great for our business; it gave us the money we needed to pay our debts, and our taxes. They all paid for their rooms, their food, their drinks. They (the press) blew that up more than it was. I didn’t even know anything had happened until I read the San Francisco papers. The town was small enough that if there had been a riot anywhere, I’d have known about it! I had three young children, we just lived a few blocks away, and I was never scared for them.

I think the races were on again in ‘51. My husband and I always stood up for the bikers; they were good people.”

Gus Deserpa lived in Hollister. He is the smiling young man seen in the background of the famous ‘Life Magazine’ photo. “I was projectionist by trade. I worked at the Granada Theater, which was on the corner of Seventh and San Benito. I would have got off work around 11 p.m... My wife came to pick me up, and we decided to walk up Main Street to see what was going on. I saw two guys scraping all these bottles together that had been lying in the street.

Then they positioned a motorcycle in the middle of the pile.

After a while this drunken guy comes staggering out of the bar, and they got him to sit on the motorcycle, and started to take his picture. I thought ‘That isn’t right’, and I got around against the wall, where I’d be in the picture, thinking that they wouldn’t take it if someone else was in there.

But they did anyway. A few days later the papers came out and I was right there in the background. They weren’t doing anything bad, just riding up and down whooping and hollering; not really doing any harm at all.”

There are two photos published on these pages. The one on the left is one that was taken and published in the Chronicle and in Life magazine. The one on the right was not published anywhere. The differences are obvious, and just the mere existence of the photo on the right suggests that the photo that was published may have been done so with a purpose of making the event more sensational news wise than it was. There are suggestions that the booze laden biker photo was staged to give dramatic flair to the reporting. The upright bottles and the club coat on the photo on the right would sure indicate to me that one of them was more set up than the other, you be the judge of that.

These eyewitness accounts and the discrepancies between the two photos on these pages are quite opposite of the newspaper and magazine photos and stories that were Marylou Williams and her husband owned a drug store published. It seems that “fake news” may not be a new on Hollister’s main street. “My husband and I owned the thing.  In 2016 we featured a Military Rider by the name of Billy Hoss.

His nickname is Bloodhound Billy and in that article we mentioned that after his service in the Army, he got into making leather goods. His business name is Bloodhound Leather and he is located in the beautiful riding area of Logan, Iowa. Right in the mix of the Loess Hills, it was only fitting that with all of the good riding that he would have a leather business geared toward a lot of motorcycle types of things.

One of the many hand tooled leather goods that he makes are can cozies. You know, the critters that help keep your cold drinks cold and your hand not all cold and wet. He told us he was going to make us a couple of them when he got a chance, and a while back he said he had something for us the next time we got through Logan or he got over our way. It took a while to be able to hook up, but when we did,

99 counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 15 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty.

Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of curiosity for our state of Iowa.

Story County Story County currently has a population of over 85,000 people. It was originally prairie with the exception of some groves along the larger streams in the area. Today Story County has booming metro areas on some of that abundant prairie and is also home to Iowa State University.

In 1846 the boundaries of Story County were established. The County has an area of 576 square miles and the county seat is in Nevada. The county was named after Joseph Story, a prominent United States Supreme Court Justice, in 1853. The first settlers came mainly from Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York; followed later by Norwegians, Germans, and Danes. The first large population inflow occurred during the 1850s.

We headed into our first stop in Story County from the north. We chose some scenic county roads that paralleled I35 and took us into downtown Story City. Story City was originally called Fairview, and has strong ties to its Scandinavian heritage. A little more than 3,000 people call Story City home, and it is only about 3 square miles in size. We stopped by Jacobson’s Gun Center downtown at 612 Broad Street and asked for some local guidance. The staff was gracious and catered to our sometimes eccentric questions, and they have some nice weapons to boot!

On suggestion we headed over to the HerschellSpillman Carousel on City Park. It was originally built in 1913, is fully operational, and is open at noon daily from Memorial Day to Labor La Day. You can ride it yourself y for a donation to help with operating costs and upkeep, and carousel operators are volunteers.

Just across the road from the Carousel is a killer s swinging bridge dating

back to 1936. The bridge is gorgeous, and is a popular backdrop for photos. There are plenty of fast food options and spots for drink, but if you have the time, stop by Alley’s Pizza on Broad Street…great food, but table space can be somewhat limited, so you may want to grab it to go and enjoy the park or visit the freedom rock.

From Story City we jumped on E 18 and stopped in Roland. Roland is a small burg consisting of just over a square mile of land, and around 1,200 residents.

There is a great welcoming place called Outsiders Pub situated at 207 Main Street if you need to wet your whistle, or grab one of their amazing burgers. Outsiders is under new ownership, and these guys are the epitome of biker friendly. In addition to great food and ice cold

drinks, they are hosting bike nights every Wednesday, so make sure you take the trip to Roland and say hello to Brian and Karah from Vernon and myself.

After our break in Roland we Cruised further east on E 18 and got a chance to crack the throttle a bit on our way through McCallsburg, a sleepy little burg platted on a half mile of small town peacefulness. From here,

you can continue on E 18 and hit Zearing, where you will find Dakins Lake and Recreation Area. The lake has areas for camping and trail walking, as well as some nice fishing spots. We chose to jump back on S 27 and head south through Fernald and on in to the county seat of Nevada.

Nevada is just over 5 square miles occupied by nearly 7,000 residents.

Nevada was platted in 1853. In its history, Story County has had a total of five courthouse structures in use. The first was built in 1856 but was destroyed by fire in 1863. It was replaced by a similar structure. Soon after, a new courthouse was planned, situated on the town square, and was completed in 1877. In the building was a tower could be climbed to see a panoramic view of the landscape, which was later removed due to safety reasons. A modern courthouse was built in 1967 and dedicated on May 18, 1968. A cannon from the Civil War rests on the lawn. Nevada is also home to the Dyer-Dowell Victorian House.

At 922 5th Street, this house was originally the Story County jail, built in 1869. It had a jailer’s residence on the first floor and prisoner’s cells above. It was later enlarged and converted into a private home, purchased by Judge George W. and Martha Kellogg Dyer.

The property is open on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day. On L Avenue you will find an Alley’s Pizza, so if you missed it in Story City; you get a second chance here! There are also authentic Mexican joints with all the tacos and margaritas you can handle!

From here we shot east on E 41 to Colo to stop and see our friends at the Dog House, as well as the Reed / Niland Corner. ReedNiland Corner has served locals and travelers since the 1920s. It is the last remaining “One Stop” where all three components (Gas - Food - Lodging) are still intact along the Lincoln or Jefferson Highways. The Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

café serves traditional diner fare, and the gas station is quite a site, fully restored and can be rented for events. We decided to jump on Old 30 and head back west towards Ames.

Ames is the largest metro area in Story County. It is home to Iowa State University and a plethora of places to eat, drink, and be merry. Whether you like mexican, home cooking, irish fare, or Italian…you will have no problem finding exactly what you want. If you need some love for your two wheeled traveling partner, be sure to stop by Zylstra H-D on 1930 E 13th Street or Fender’s Honda at 100 S 16th Street while you are in town…whatever your brand of choice, these guys and gals have got ya covered! Ames was also home to Neva Morris…she was listed as the second oldest person in the world on record at the ripe old age of 114! Another cool place to stop and stretch your legs while in Ames is the Reiman Gardens on the ISU campus if you get a chance. From Ames we headed south on 69 into Huxley.

By this time we were up waaaay past our bedtime, and hit it hard for home. Be sure to tune in next month when we poke around Tama County and see what hidden treasures we can rustle up on our tour.

Huxley was incorporated on August 27, 1902, and its 3 miles of land provides homes for nearly 3,300 residents. Huxley is home to the annual Prairie Festival, where everyone is invited to “eat, drink, and be prairie”. Prairie Fest offers fun kids activities like a petting zoo and inflatables, a hypnotist and 5K/10K for the big kids, and of course the annual parade for kids of all ages.

Huxley allowed us to hop on 210 W for our last stop in Story County.

We ended our tour in the small community of Slater. Slater is home to 1,500 people, and to part of the High Trestle Trail. The High Trestle Trail connects at Slater to the 32-mile Heart of Iowa Nature Trail in Story County. High Trestle Trail is a rail trail running 25 miles from Ankeny to Woodward. The 13 story high and nearly half-mile long trestle bridge provides scenic views and is located near mining shafts that were worked

by Italian immigrant families who settled nearby. The bridge was originally built in the 1970’s to carry rail traffic on a Milwaukee Road line. In 2015, the BBC designated the High Trestle Trail Bridge as one of the eight amazing footbridges in the world. Pretty cool for small town Iowa if ya ask me.

Now, how can we go from being profiled in the most negative ways, to the experience I had at the restaurant?

How do we go from the negative perception of what a biker is, to the point where everyone with a cause or charity asks for our help doing fundraisers? Don’t take that the wrong way folks. It’s in the nature of a true biker to help our fellow man and we do it with no strings attached. The really cool part; we love doing it; we get a chance to ride, and help someone out. Cool.

Kids are out of school, and we are enjoying lovely Iowa weather. Bike Now, in a less than perfect world like we live in, bikers nights everywhere, and everybody with a cause in general are the greatest people in the world. We don’t has tapped into the biker world to help their cause. ask for anything but the freedom to live our lives on our terms. And to ride. Motorcycle Caucus The American Motorcyclist Association thanks Senators Joni Ernst and Gary Peters for forming a Motorcycle Caucus. This is a bipartisan effort to advocate for motorcycling issues.

“Some of my most cherished memories include motorcycles, from delivering messages as a young girl to my dad while he was working out in the fields, to riding through the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa with family and friends,” Ernst said. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to encourage thoughtful discussion and solutions on behalf of motorcycle riders and manufacturers through my new role as co-chair of the Motorcycle Caucus.

“Throughout my 99 county tour of Iowa, I have heard from many of these folks about some of their priorities, including improving safety, infrastructure and energy efficiency. These concerns are shared by folks across our great state and country, and I look forward to working with Sen. Peters toward solutions.”

Ernst said her concern for motorcycles and motorcyclists started when she was a child.

Bringing in the heat of riding season is Stumpy from Stumpy’s Bar & Grill in Duncombe with some of his favorite gals alongside of him, and also his HD CVO Street Glide. We ended up here on one of the stops of the 6th Annual Sleeping Angels Fun Run. That awesome ride that day ended stopping both here and at the Riverside Tap in Lehigh. Both Riverside and Stumpy’s are Check –In Spots on the 2017 Tall Corn Run. If you get to Duncombe, they have a bike night on Thursday nights, or stop in to Stumpy’s for some great food and cold drinks. I recommend the tenderloin!



“Outsiders” won’t get this, they can’t understand, “outsiders” being people that are not in the biker community. Biker Community- it’s kind of an open ended term that covers so many bases. It’s a strong powerful force when it responds as one. A force in numbers, sure, political influence, at times and at always a financial one to be reckoned with.

It’s not a clearly defined group or community either; it doesn’t have one pure focus, leadership, or really a plan.

Hell, we are bikers and one of the reasons we DO RIDE is we don’t want anybody to tell us what the hell we are supposed to do, think, ride, or gasp, act!

Its fluid, we kind of have an idea what it is , but we are not close to being able to describe it because it’s a living, adapting, organism.

Each rider, each group, club, event, run, bike night and more is its own living and breathing biker community definition.

From a “weekend warrior”, or poker run regular, sport bike guy, full patched club member, or whatever; pick a slot, while inside the biker community, divisions happen. Harley guys hate metric riders, touring riders have their own ideals, and a sport bike fan can think a dude riding a 49 Pan has one foot in the grave and so on.

While we IN the biker community can easily slot and spot various fractions, those on the outside looking in, all notice one thing, once you swing a leg over, slide on some leather, those that don’t “get it” look at us all as “some biker”.

Not all, I shouldn’t make a blanket statement like that, not a end all be all because nothing is that clear cut, but if you’re in the biker community, you know what it is.

I mention the influence that we have and generally, the community is at its best when we are a force together. How many millions of dollars each year do bikers raise for various causes? Not just poker runs, which we do a great job with, but so many other causes as well. Or legislation, when the biker communities supports or opposes the political machine pays attention to the strength in numbers.

Sometimes, you just have a bad experience, sure, shit happens. We’ve all been there. We all have our bad days, some while providing a good or service, others while being the customer. That dinner service got out of control as the night went on, tragically, slowly, laughable. We were stuck too, having no choice but to ride it out and that is where humor does come to help.

After all, it’s a bad night, eating out; might as well just relax and see how bad it could really get.

Answer? Pretty bad.

Now, I bring this up for this reason, while my wife and I were laughing about how bad this place was messing up, we both knew nothing really would come out of it because the people we were with, really didn’t have the passion to care. To them, meh, some were having a bad meal, they were ready to finish up and move on.

I joked, this would never happen to a place that bikers like. Not the customer service, again, shit happens, I mean, the non-caring The biker community supports those that support us. We frequent joints that support riders, we stay at rider friendly hotels, hell we hire lawyers that support the cause. When a place supports riders, we spread the word. Doesn’t matter what part of our great roads in Iowa take you or any other place. Word spreads quickly. A business does us good; we tend to tell a few of our friends. A business does us wrong, we will tell EVERYBODY about it.

Marketers have often said that if you have a good experience doing something, buying a bike, seeing a movie, staying at a hotel, or a dinner, you will tell 2-3 people. However, if you have a bad experience, you’re likely to tell 10 people. This was long before the advent of social media for sure.

The loose knit world of bikers do talk and share tales of the good, the bad and the laughable. If you run across a place, service or whatever that is rider friendly, be sure to spread the good word. The more we can find that support our passion, the more we should support them. Word will spread; our economic power will spur more to support us as well. Then, if they (businesses) are really smart, they will use the right marketing vehicles to reach that economic group of bikers, like placing ads in Thunder Roads!

What struck me over the years is the quiet economic power that we bikers hold. It’s not the cheapest The riding season is in full swing, get out, be safe, passion in the world after all! THE MUDDY FEST MOTORCYCLES & MUSIC Steve Whitney is an Iowa native that has been living and working in California in the entertainment world.

Producing movies, working as an agent for big Hollywood stars, and working on some of the largest grossing movies in the entertainment world, Steve is no stranger to making things happen. While he was back in Iowa working on a film project in the Quad Cities, he found out that the popular biker event on the Mississippi had closed up shop and was no more. He did some checking and thought that this was quite the tragedy, and loved being back in Iowa, so he got to work on planning Muddy Fest, a Motorcycle and Music Festival to be held Jun 16-18th in Davenport.

This festival and rally will be the inaugural event, and become the first of many to carry on the tradition of a motorcycle event in the Quad Cities in June. The Muddy Fest features motorcycles, many miles of two lane highway river view riding, group rides with some Hollywood types, some fine regional cuisine, vendors, motorcycle stunt shows, and celebrity appearances at Centennial Park.

Camping is available at the historic Credit Island, which is an easy walk from the event.

There will also be some amazing entertainment in store for rally goers.

Sublime with Rome will be in concert in Iowa for the first time in years during their smash international 2017 Tour.

National motorcycle thrill team, Nan Sens, will perform N aamazing freestyle motorcycle jumps.

Also, Robby Krieger, the A gguitarist of The Doors and ssongwriter of such hits as Light My Fire, Love Her Madly, M aand Love Me Two Times, will pplay, in concert, The Doors legendary music to celebrate the le 550th Anniversary of the group.

Krieger’s mother has Quad K Cities C ties, but he has never played in Davenport, so you don’t want to miss this special appearance.

Olympic Gold medalist, 15 time NCAA Champion wrestling coach and Iowa legend Dan Gable will do an onstage Q&A with actor Billy Baldwin star of Ron Howard’s Backdraft, Flatliners with Julia Roberts and ESPN wrestling commentator. Gable and Baldwin will both sign autographs and Baldwin will lead a ride.

Sons of Anarchy star, Mark Boone Jr, who played the character of Bobby Monson, will lead a ride and sign autographs.

Mark is one of the few actors from the show that were and still are real riders, so this will be a special treat to be able to ride with Mark on the scenic roads around the Quad Cities.

James Lang is our June Military Rider that hails from North Liberty, Iowa. We first got hooked up with James when Pinky moved clear the hell out to Colorado and James and his business helped her out. He owns and operates Always Moving Forward. James attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant (O2E) in the United States Marine Corps. He served our great nation from 1997 until 2012. His service locations included Kaneohe Bay, Camp Pendleton, TwentyNine Palms, Quantico, Camp Lejeune, Iraq, Afghanistan, and also Okinawa. His Grandpa served in the Army and he has an older Brother and a Brother-in-law who were both in the United States Air Force, so he was following in a family tradition of service to our country in the Military. James started out his USMC career as a 1341 Engineer Mechanic, but then he went to Officer Candidate School and they made him a 0602 Communications Officer.

We asked James what plans he has for the summer, and he said there is always a poker run fund-raiser for the local fire department that he tries to attend, but not much otherwise other than riding whenever he can. James is a member of the Marine Corps League and some others, but not necessarily riding groups. Now that the 2017 Riding Season is officially underway and the bikes are once again rolling down the Iowa pavement, the wheels in my head are spinning out of control while my knees are being reunited with the breeze.

All this fresh air and sunshine have led me to the conclusion that I could be rich if I wrote a book called “The Biker Code for Dummies”.

“The Biker Code” is well known to many within the riding community; it is a secret unwritten code that I’m pretty sure a number of bike owners have never read. Hold on to your helmets ladies and gentleman, I take the biker code pretty seriously.

I have sat along side the road patiently waiting for the silhouette of a biker to crest the horizon in anticipation that a fellow biker will come to my rescue on more than one occasion. Needless to say, those experiences have molded some pretty stern views on the topic into me. Anyone riding a motorcycle that intentionally ignores a fellow biker stranded along side the road losses my respect faster than Trump can Tweet.

What really got me fired up about this topic is a story that I overheard at a local ride.

It started out with 2 bikers going for ride. They were headed out for a 2 hour ride to a dealership because “Biker A” had made a deal on a new ride and wanted to go pick it up so he asked “Biker B” to join him.

About 30 minutes from the dealership “Biker B” stalled out along side the road.

“Biker A” was leading the way and just kept going.

That’s the first mistake. I believe if you are the leader of the pack, even if it is a pack of 2, you have assumed the responsibility to ensure that your followers are following you, even Charlie Manson understood that.

He had made his deal, got his new ride, the horns were blown, the confetti had been tossed and the champagne cork had been popped. More importantly he was now ready to lend aid to “Biker B” aka “his riding buddy” remember him, the guy sitting along side the road for the last 3 hours.

At that point, my warped brain immediately hit the melt down mode. I have sat along side the road waiting for help.

I can not remember a single time that my own riding buddies or the group that I was riding with did not come back looking for me! If I was “Biker B” when “Biker A” returned, I would have been so excited about his new ride that I would have closely inspected it, asked all kinds of curious questions about the machine and inquired about how great of a deal he had scored. Then I would have asked him if he had his insurance in order and before he could even answer, I would have firmly planted my riding boot up against the gas tank of his brand new ride and kicked the Mo Fo over right there along side the road. I would then explain how that’s my insurance policy that anyone willing to leave me sitting along side the road for 3 hours thinks twice about inviting me to ride with them again. Bring on the hate mail; I take “The Biker Code” that seriously.

“Biker B” took it better than I would have, he assumed that sooner or later his buddy, “Biker A” would figure out that he had fallen behind and come back looking for him. After 45 minutes of waiting, “Biker B” assumed that “Biker A” would be at the dealership and a rescue vehicle would

A couple of months back we were out and about researching some cool things for upcoming articles when we stumbled across a hidden h gem in a little strip s mall in Orange City.

C P’s Pizza P House’s Orange O City restaurant r is located at 723 7 8th Street SE. They also have a second location at 630 8th Avenue SW in LeMars.

P’s serves a full menu until 10:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but don’t come calling on a Sunday, as you will sadly find the doors locked.

By the time we checked out the décor a little and reviewed our research game plan, our appetizer had arrived. We started our meal with the Chislic. Chislic is a generous plate of flash fried sirloin chunks that are seasoned with fresh black pepper and served with a delightfully creamy sriracha dip on the side. This was a satisfying choice, I would even be happy if I had chosen this as my meal! After the appetizer, Niki brought us our entrees, and we were happy to chow down. Vernon ordered the Fifty-Fifty Burger… a juicy half pound burger, cooked to perfection and topped with Havarti cheese, tender smoked pulled pork, caramelized onions, and thick slab bacon…all piled onto a lightly toasted potato bun. As if that’s not enough, the burger comes with a generous side of homemade potato chips. I had chosen to order a deliciously crusty mini wood fired pizza affectionately known as Own the Pig. Fresh San Marzano red sauce under a generous helping of pork belly, bacon, Canadian bacon, house made sausage, and mozzarella cheese. I added pineapple per recommendation, and jalapenos as well because…well I like them. The pizza was everything I could have hoped for…crispy, cheesy perfection on a plate.

While we ate, we chatted with Niki, getting some local advice on what to see and do in the Orange City area. I have to say, people like Niki are the reason that this job is so much fun.

She was personable, fun, and just as full of it as we always are! The food at P’s is marvelous, but in all honesty, if it had ssucked, I would still go back, just to grab a beer and shoot the shit with Niki for a w while. P’s Pizza House is lucky to have her oon their team! So, next time you are in the aarea, be sure to stop by P’s for some fabulo lous grub and an ice cold beverage…but be ssure to give Niki a hard time and tell her it’s fr from Vernon and I! We pulled up to P’s Pizza House just after they had opened, and stepped inside to find a clean, modern interior and were immediately seated. Once we sat down, our waitress, Niki brought us our drinks and helped us peruse the expansive menu. One thing is for sure, whether you are a wood fired pizza person, or sandwiches are more your speed…this place won’t disappoint. There are so many delicious looking options that we had a hard time choosing, so we decided to order one appetizer, and two entrees that we could share.

HappyFather’s Day In the month of May, amongst the springing of riding season we celebrated the mothers that we all know and love. The delicate flowers… the fairer sex if you will.

Well, June brings us the day upon which we applaud the other half of our parental units. The barbeque kings, the personal mechanics, the guardian of dwellings that we each call home. Dads are a pretty great group of guys, mine being the best of the bunch (not that I am biased or anything). So let’s give Dads their 15 minutes of fame and do a little digging into the origin of their special day.
