Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day. We thank our Veterans every day, but keep them in your thoughts and prayers collectively on this day. May 19th is Armed Forces Day, please thank a service man or woman.

are single vehicle incidents, and Slider’s premise is that we need to take better care of ourselves to prevent crashes. There were over 200 in attendance at a packed house in Spencer for this new presentation. This presentation that evening was actually sponsored by the Shayla Bee Fund and over $4,300 of proceeds from the night went to that fund to benefit families with children with a medical crisis. Dick “Slider” A. Gilmore has been riding since the mid 60’s and has been involved with Basic Life Support Classes and training since the 70’s. He realized the need for motorcyclists to be better informed on how to assist at the scene of an accident. In 1986 he developed the first classes in the country that dealt with motorcycle accidents. Two Wheel Trauma (TWT) provides basic and advanced Emergency Medical Training (EMT) credit to first responders and ambulance personnel. Another class he developed and teaches is the Accident Scene Management (ASC) class. This teaches motorcycle riders what to do in case of an accident, stressing the importance of the “Golden Hour”...the first hour after an accident which usually determines if the victim lives or dies. Slider’s presentations started in 1986, educating thousands of riders in almost every state.
To fully experience the message, it is highly recommended that you sit in on one of Slider’s presentations. You will be entertained and educated at the same time. Slider is a dynamic speaker that brings years of riding experience to his audience with passion and flair. Some of the main points that he speaks about is that he recommends taking an experienced rider course every year. Along that line of thought, practice every time you ride. You can even practice safer driving skills when in your car. Practice safely, ride safely, and arrive safely. He states that we can avoid more crashes by becoming better riders.
His new presentation entitled Blue Haired Old Ladies, Road Alligators, & Tar Snakes is a diversion from his previous presentations, in that he gears this new presentation toward riders themselves. A great percentage of motorcycle crashes

Shayla Bee Fund The Legacy of a Six Year Old Girl In April the Shayla Bee Fund completed its 5th year. In early January 8, 2005 Shayla passed away at 6-years old. Very shortly after her death there was an idea to start a ‘Fund’ to help working class responsible families with a child in a medical crisis. Shayla’s life, along with the strength, determination, and loving care her Mom Lindsay gave her was the inspiration that changed lives. On April 7, 2007 the first seed money in the Shayla Bee checking account was deposited and officially started the Shayla Bee Fund. The group formed a board of people that had never even been on a board before, rolled up their sleeves and got started, although they had no clue what they were doing. Shayla Bee is not a motorcycle organization; however the vast majority of support has come from the motorcycle community. Many of these people would ride through hell and back to help these kids. In those 5 years over 2,600 people have come to support this effort. Over $200,000.00 has been raised and donated, and in March 2012 the group adopted their 52nd Shayla Bee Family. The Shayla Bee Fund has become something much different than envisioned but exactly what it was meant to be. It was never dreamed that so many people would come together in service to these families. Shayla was told she would never Bee forgotten, and every one that participates honors her memory and ensures her legacy. One of Crawford County’s claims to fame is that it was the childhood home of Donna Reed. She worked in both film and on television, but is best known for her part in A 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one Beautiful Life with James Stewart. She appeared in over down, drive on around, 75 counties to tour on the bike. A 40 films, and won an Academy Award for best supporting few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through actress in 1953 for the movie From Here to Eternity. Her each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was legacy is kept alive in Denison with the annual Donna a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit Reed film festival, as well as the Donna Reed Foundation each county as a featured article. We will tell you about for the performing arts. This group awards scholarships new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark to students of the performing arts as well as operates the of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa. 99 Counties on the Wall
One O of my favorite places on a Sunday morning in Crawford County is a place called Cronks. They serve C great food every other day, but they have a Sunday morning g breakfast buffet that is awesome. They have been in b business since 1929, and some of the memorabilia from b the th years are on display. From the home made pastries to an omelets station to whip up one right there for ya, it cannot be beat. This place is located right on the Lincoln Highway, aka Highway 30, on the western side of Denison near the Highway 59 intersection. There is always room for motorcycle parking, and they treat everyone the same no matter if you have Sunday church clothes or biker duds. c Another notable stop in Crawford County is in the little A burg of Dow City. Crawford County is located in the second tier of counties on the western edge of Iowa. It is about dead center from the north and south borders of Iowa. It is intersected by State highways 141 and 39, as well as Federal roads 30 and 59. All of these roads intersect about in the center of the county in the Denison area, which is the county seat. There are also many miles of nicely paved county roads that ribbon throughout the countryside. The Highway 30 corridor rail system runs through Crawford County as well.

Just J across Highway 30 and a couple miles outside of town is The Throttle Shop, owned by Steve and Lisa Ulmer. A sign at their corner leads you to their shop; that is on about a short mile of gravel, but well worth the trip. These are two of the nicest people you will ever meet, and they work on about anything with wheels and a motor and can fix you up. Steve has been a gear head for years and can fix about anything you throw his way.

Crawford County offers some nice roads and cool western Iowa scenery. The area is mainly agricultural with row crop as well as a significant place for cattle operations. Pasture land and green grass, trees, hills and curves are in abundance which makes for a nice afternoon ride.

Head west from 59 on E59 and go through Buck Grove and into Dow city. Stop and have a cold one at Cheers II and then visit Steve and Lisa at the Throttle Shop. After you leave there, you can head north on county Highway M14 and experience some fun curves, high hilltops and deep valleys on a nicely paved rural road. Hit 141 and go west into Charter Oak and then north on L51 and then back east on E16. Stop by Schleswig and head on south on 59 into Denison. For our May issue, we bring you AJ Poeppe from Atlantic. AJ served our country in the Navy from 1966-1969 as a Third Class Petty Officer. He was a Seabee and served two tours in Northern Vietnam. His first tour he worked with explosives and his second he worked on road and other project building in the “bush”. The Seabees work alongside the United States Marine Corp building and maintaining infrastructure. The Seabees build and the Marines protect. If the Military needs a road, a hospital, a command post, or any structure, it is the Seabees that come and make it happen. AJ’s brother also served the Military as an Army man in Korea. One of the things that AJ noted about his service is that most of his remaining unit gets together once a year for a reunion. He has maintained close ties with many of his fellow service men over the years and get together to catch up and share old stories and relax. Lifelong bonds were formed during their service together.

We have a friend who recently began riding a motorcycle. She bought a used bike and began riding with a friendly group of experienced riders. Some of them noticed that it sounded like she was still revving when she came up to the stops, but wrote it off to her being a novice. After a few weeks, she commented on how tired she was from having to force the throttle forward every time she wanted to slow down. All the guys in the group looked at each other, then back at her and said, “Do you mean the throttle isn’t just rolling forward when you let off?” She hadn’t had enough experience to realize that there was something wrong with the throttle, and like a good sport, she was just trying to make the situation work. Thanks to the other riders, she found out she needed to have the throttle return cable replaced and has been amazed at the difference it made in her ride! Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you didn’t even know enough to realize how much you didn’t know? Sometimes the lack of knowledge doesn’t result in harm and makes a funny story to tell later, but other times, we make lifealtering decisions that we’ve based on incorrect info - all because of our lack of knowledge. For instance, most of us know someone who says they’ve “tried church” and now they think that means that they’ve “tried God”. They say that church is full of hypocrites, that people are stuck up, that it’s boring, the music is too slow. They scratch the search for God off their list and go back to trying to figure out life on their own.
no, they haven’t tried riding - they’ve just gone to a meeting with other people who ride. And even though everyone at the meeting rides, they aren’t all there for the same reasons. Some are at the meeting hoping to make business connections. Some are there because they hope that if they’re at every meeting they’ll get elected to an office in the organization. A few ride because they think it makes them look cool. Some ride this month but will find a new hobby by the end of the summer. Most of us ride just because we love to ride. But if our riding group isn’t working out, we don’t quit riding. We ride by ourselves for a while until we find a group we can ride with. If your search for God has stalled out because of a negative church experience, don’t quit searching. Just as going to ride group meetings does not equal riding in the wind, going to church services does not equal knowing God. Don’t get me wrong - everyone needs good friends to ride with- friends who know how to help when you don’t even know that anything is wrong. But until then, you still have to throw your leg over your own bike. God promises in Proverbs 8:17 that those who search for him will find him. If the Bible seems overwhelming at first, try the book The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. It will get you moving in the right direction in your search for God. IIowa’s Iowa’ ’ first Fun Run of the season held on April fourteenth, a day that tornados ripped through Southern Iowa. Sleeping Angels Fun Run was a fitting title for over hundred people gathered on bikes, in cars, and many piled into a bus. With even a greater number preregistered not all were able to attend but all were willing to help the

Jethro’s BBQ ‘n Jambalaya came highly recommended to me from one of my loyal readers, so Lynnette and I just HAD to check it out. I suppose it doesn’t hurt that the very mention of those 3 magic letters starts the salivation process that leaves me looking like a bulldog (you’ll see me tie this reference in later so pay ‘tention!) with his head hanging out the car window at 60 MPH! The anticipation was so great that I decided to see if they happen to have a website... and YES they do! WWW. JETHROSDESMOINES.COM Upon arrival at their site I discovered that this isn’t a solo establishment but they have 3 in the Des Moines area. The original location, Jethro’s BBQ, by Drake (there’s the first tie in... there’s more,
keep payin’ ‘tention), the second, Jethro’s BBQ ‘n Jake’s Smokehouse Steaks in Altoona and the third one... the object of this article (although there seems to be some debate as to what town lays claim to its location, the address is West Des Moines but the website says it’s in Waukee). Make sure and visit the website, there’s quite a back story they lay out about Jethro and his (here comes the other tie in) bulldog Jake coming to our fair state from southern California with money given to them from their uncle who became rich from stumbling upon some “bubbling crude”. We arrived at about 6:30 on a Friday night to find an almost packed parking lot. This can be a good or a bad thing, the good: the food here must be something special, the bad: we’re going to have to wait FOREVER to get to eat any of it! Not to be deterred when BBQ is on the menu we went on in. The wait was only about 30 minutes and they give you one of those notifiers with the flashing LEDs that vibrates. This gives you some freedom to go outside, window shop the neighboring shops, etc. I’m told that as long as you stay in the parking lot of the strip
mall it will notify you. We didn’t test this out as it was a tad on the chilly side the evening we were there so we mainly stayed inside. I did learn one thing about their little notifiers... if you get engrossed reading the newspaper articles that have been written about the establishment that are framed on the walls in the waiting area (always checking out the competition I am) that thing will scare the CRAP out of you when it goes off! Once we were seated our waitress came and took our drink orders and having been advised to try the onion rings we ordered a half order of those as an appetizer. The menu is very diverse and everything sounds delicious in the descriptions. After much debate I finally settled on the full rack rib dinner. When the onion rings arrived we were glad we had been warned to only order the half order... these rings are HUGE and a half order is larger than most full orders elsewhere! My rib dinner came with two sides so I selected the campfire baked beans and the garlic mashed potatoes. These two sides are very good but the real star of this dinner is the ribs! I went to pick up the rack so as to pull off the first bone and it broke in two pieces in the middle... ok, b I guess I’ll start in the middle and eat to the ends. I grabbed one of the bones and it came cleanly out of g the th rack! These ribs are sooooo tender they literally fall f off the bone!!!!! The flavor is out of this world... it’s it almost a sin to use any BBQ sauce on them; there is i a selection of sauces on each table if you feel the need though. n As A you can probably tell t the website back story, the ambiance s and a the food all together have just t added Jethro’s BBQ a ‘n ‘ Jambalaya to my m list of all time favorite places f to t eat! Freedom Quilts Ceremony Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa was invited to a special event outside of Fonda on April 7th. Freedom Quilts had their third annual ceremony scheduled for that day. The day started out with a brisk 40 degrees with variable rain showers. Looking at the forecast revealed the day was to improve precipitation wise, so off on the scooter I went. The first goal for the day was to meet up with Carl Frank from the Polk City American Legion Riders at the intersection of 71 and 3. Carl shot us a heads up months ago about the Freedom Quilts ceremony to be held that day.

All of these gentlemen share a common bond, their service to our country in the Military and each also rides with their respective American legion riders. After invites from three different ALR members from different areas of the state, we thought we better make it rain or shine. This event was also upgraded to a full Patriot Guard Riders mission, so with that level of commitment from other riders, a car was simply not an option for the day. After meeting with Carl, and the Spencer group joining shortly after, 18 bikes headed for Betty’s place. We were

Four American Legion Riders presented and displayed the Battle Cross Memorial along with the history and d meaning being explained to the group. The symbolism and meaning behind the rifle, the boots, the dog tags, and the helmet puts things into perspective, no matter how many times you see it. It makes one more fully appreciate the freedoms we enjoy at the cost of others. The ceremony then continued with singing of the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, and then

NAPPY’S “CoonAss” SEAFOOD DIP *(Nappy is the State Editor/Owner for Thunder Roads Louisiana) “We CoonAsses take pride in our own recipe’s when it comes to seafood boils and seafood fry’s. It’s an “ego thing”. And when it comes to family and friend gatherings, we’re always looking for that pat on the back or subtle hint of how to improve upon our cooking skills. While few things in life are free, this dip recipe is yours to try, enjoy and figure out how it may supplement some other recipe you indulge in. After all, that’s what we do down here along the Bayous of Louisiana. No reason to deprive the rest of the country of some of the good things in life....” Most of the ingredients are provided in measurements, but can be adjusted according to taste. Double up everything if you need to make a larger amount. Ingredients: 1 Quart - Mayonnaise (personal preference of course, with considerations to low fat or not) 1 - Small onion, sweet works best 1- Celery stick 2 teaspoons - of garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon - black pepper 2 tablespoons - of Tony Chachere Cajun Seasoning (or an equivalent Cajun seasoning for your region) 1/4 cup - parsley flakes 2 tablespoons - of Hot Sauce (“Louisiane”, Tobasco, your choice - Cayenne pepper may be substituted) 2 tablespoons - Ketchup Slight touch - Creole Mustard Instructions: Puree the onion and celery stick in a food processor, while adding a very small amount of water, enough to liquify. When done, pour into bowl then add the garlic powder, Cajun seasoning, pepper, parsley flakes and hot sauce. To help blend seasonings together use a whisk or fork and stir for about two minutes. Once blended, empty the quart of Mayonnaise along with Ketchup and Creole Mustard then blend your seasoning paste thoroughly with your mayo. Once blended, taste and add whatever seasoning would
be needed to suit your taste. If it’s too hot for your taste, you will need to add more mayonnaise to subdue it. Typical color of the blended recipe should be light pink; Ketchup adds both color and flavor. To effect the flavor of the dip, it should be made a day before use and allowed to sit. Keep refrigerated and feel free to use the mayonnaise jar to store the remaining dip (if there’s any left). Serving Suggestions: This dip is just one of many different styles of seafood dip popular in Bayou Country when it comes to boiling seafood such as shrimp, crabs or crawfish. It also makes an excellent salad dressing, such as a Shrimp Remoulade. Depending on your geographic location, you should find it a compliment to any seafood or crustacean passion. If nothing else, it’s great on Captain’s Wafers. Y’all Enjoy! Nappy. *Note from Editor - We have tasted this dip of Nappy’s first-hand, and it is simple perfection. LICIOUS’ LEMON PIE COOKIES 2 Sticks Unsalted Butter; room temp. 4 oz. Cream Cheese; room temp. 1/2 tsp. salt 2 Cups all-purpose flour 2 Cups Confectioner’s Sugar; divide 2 Lemons Zested & 3 Tbls. of Juice In glass or ceramic medium-size bowl, with hand mixer, beat up butter, 1 cup of the sugar & salt until silky smooth. Add the 2 Tbls. of lemon juice but only half amt. of zest you were able to render Switch mixer down to low, add flour slowly; just a little at a time as it incorporates. Turn dough out onto cutting board and roll it into a log. Cover it with plastic wrap and chill it down for at least one hour. When ready; cut into 1/4 inch discs. Place on silicone baking pad on your cooking sheet, or spray down baking sheet good. Place into preheated 350 degree oven for 20 mins. or until edges are golden brown. Pull from oven and transfer to a cooling rack and keep doing in batches. Mix your cream cheese, 1 Tbl. juice and confectioner’s sugar and half of remaining zest. After all have cooled down, frost each cookie and give each one a twinkle of zest. You can also put mixture in between and make these into mini lemon pie sandwich cookies. Slurp!

I bumped into a long time riding buddy at the grocery store one day. He had stopped for something to grill after enjoying a full day of riding. I was grabbing a few necessities before rushing home to get in some bonding time with my bike. We spent a few minutes catching up on life, our rides and our most recent adventures. We agreed it had been too long since we had shared the wind and vowed to ride together again the following Saturday, for a local fund raiser event. We really didn’t care where the ride was going or how long it lasted, the excitement was about spending time together.

All day, my thoughts were of him, his wife, his family and the battle he was fighting. As the miles rolled by so did the memories. Then he fired up his bike and joined us for the last couple of miles. He refused to listen to his wife or his doctors regarding his ability to ride the machine that he loved. That day it was “his road” and he was bound and determined that he was going to ride it! That was the last time I rode with my buddy down “his road”, the wind in our hair, the sun shining, we were kicking gears, smiling and nothing else in the world mattered. My buddy lost a courageous and heroic battle with pancreatic cancer a few short weeks later. He had said once, that he hoped a lot of bikes showed up when it was his turn to go. I think he would have been proud of the turnout, standing room only, a true tribute to the kind of man he was and the number of people he touched throughout his journey. Throughout the years, I have joined in many fund raising rides. This year, riding to raise money for a cause has taken on a whole new meaning. I will be riding in Around the Square - Relay for Life Fundraiser by “Wind Bags” in Atlantic on Friday June 22nd. My buddy will not be riding along side me, but I plan to spend that day riding with him again. Paula Jens

Four guys go fishing…..After an hour, the following conversation took place: First guy: You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room in the house next weekend..’ Second guy: That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for the pool.’ Third guy: Man ,you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I would remodel the kitchen for her.’ They continue to fish. When they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word, they asked him, “You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend. What’s the deal?” Fourth guy: I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off the alarm, gave the wife a playful slap on the ass and said: ‘Fishing or Sex?’ And she groggily replied,……’Wear sun-block.’ As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the Kentucky back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical male, I didn’t stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family or friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man. And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”

When Friday rolled around, Jim showed up at Les’s house at 2pm sharp and after paying Sue the agreed sum they went to the bedroom, and closed their transaction. Jim quickly dressed and left. As usual, Les came home from golf at 6 pm and upon arriving, asked his wife: ‘Did Jim come by the house this afternoon?’ With a lump in her throat Sue answered, ‘Why, yes, he did stop by for a few minutes this afternoon.’ Her heart nearly skipped a beat when her husband curtly asked, ‘Did he give you $250?’ Sue was using her best poker face and replied, “Well, yes, as a matter of fact, he did”, she said out loud but kept a smug look on her face. ON THE ROAD AGAIN WOW, I can’t believe it finally happened! The day came when the weather was good, I wasn’t working and we didn’t have appointments. We were finally in the wind again! Can’t believe how good it feels, each and every first time of the season. We loaded up and headed north up Hwy 25 through Guthrie Center. Being the passenger, I of course get to just sit back and enjoy it for a few minutes, before resuming my duties as a passenger. I keep my eyes open for critters, both large and small. It might be daylight, but they are out enjoying the weather too and it’s not unusual to spot rabbits, turtles, the occasional coyote along with turkeys and deer, crossing these country roads. I’m happy to say that the critters kept their distance that day. Once we got to Hwy 141 we decided we needed to go say hello to our friends at the Do Drop In, so we headed east to Jamaica. As we pull in we can hear the rock & roll coming out the front door and we know the owner is in. After a catch-up chat and a libation, we are ready to get back on the road and feel the wind again. Back up to Hwy 141 we continue east with the wind picking up and the clouds playing chase with the sun. Sure hope this awesome weather holds out long enough for us to make a decent day trip out of this ride.
“Where do you want to go?”, “I don’t know, where do you want to go?” ??? I don’t know about y’all, but we go through this a lot around here. So, a friend of ours gave us a new method to use for deciding where to go. Spin the bottle, except instead of kissing, you put the bottle on a map, yes, you can kiss, too! Now a regular sized beer bottle is just a bit too big for a regular sized map, so we had to adapt. We didn’t have any airline sized liquor bottles, so we finally settled on the spinner from a monopoly game. Before we spin we work out how much time we have to spend on our ride, giving ourselves an approximate mile range that we would travel that day. Next, we spin. After we spin we open the magazine and look to see who is in our biker-friendly directory that we could stop and visit along that route. I do believe we may finally have an answer to that age-old question, “Where do you want to go?” I’ll have to keep y’all up-dated on how well this works. We’re always looking for the lesser traveled roads, so we decided to take county road P58 south and cruise back towards Hwy 44. Some of the fields up here have farmers in them getting ready to plant, can you say, SPRING!! So now you know, not only do you have to keep an eye out for the critters, you gotta look out for the sloooow-moving farm machinery out there. Now that we’re back on the road, we find ourselves heading to familiar territory and cruise further south to the town of Redfield to say “hey” to the crew at Off Sides Pizza. Just a short stop here, it’s not long before I’m tugging at the ol’ mans sleeve and letting him know that I’m ready to get back on the road again. I didn’t have to tell him twice! We were off and riding again, this time back west on county road F59 to Hwy 4, which we took north into Panora. There we stopped at a newly opened tavern called the Owl’s Nest. Very nice atmosphere, with good smells coming out of the kitchen. To top it off, we ran into a friend and decided to ride on up the road together to the next town and see what was happening up there. Next stop was Guthrie, talk about coming full circle! With a stop in town just quick enough to wet the whistle, we decided to travel north together to our brother’s hometown. Toolin’ along side by side and I’m pretty sure those speedometer’s were up there near the triple digits! The ride just doesn’t get any better than this, for today. Cause we all know that they just keep getting better and better, each time we get out and go! It is starting to get late in the day and it’s a long one tomorrow. Can’t wait until we have more time to spend out on the road, am really looking forward to our first rally this year. Not sure which one will be the first, but hopefully it will be the first of at least a few this season. Which brings me to a new idea the ol’ man and I are going to be trying out when it comes to deciding where to go when we want to go for a ride. Does this sound familiar, 48 - TRMI MAY 2012

For this motorcycle enthusiast, “H” doesn’t stand for “Harley” but rather “Honda” and “Hodaka”. Simply put, Alan Reynolds collects motorcycles; specifically, Hodaka’s and Honda’s, with a few Yamaha‘s thrown in the mix. He collects his bikes the way some people collect guns or dishes or anything - he keeps the best, replacing the less than perfect. Upon closer inspection and conversation, I discovered that Alan’s collection falls, almost entirely, between the years 1969 - 1979. His motorcycle of choice is a Honda Trail 70 (H model) with a 4 speed from 1970 or 1971. These little dirt bikes were built to tear up the ground and withstand the hard riding that young boys (and girls) were capable of. But Alan’s are in excellent condition. He has at least 10 of these little beauties all with their original paint, with a couple of 50’s thrown in the line-up. While most people preferred the automatics, back in the day, Alan prefers the 4-speed clutch models, which have become quite rare. When I asked Alan how he got started riding motorcycles, his father piped up, “We pulled the first one out of a corncrib in West Liberty.” Neither men remember how old Alan was, but they knew it was a Hodaka Dirt Squirt 80cc. Raised in rural Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he had plenty of farm ground to hone his skills as a rider. It’s not surprising that many people have never heard of the Hodaka motorcycles. Partnering with a company in Japan, a company in Athena, Oregan began to manufacture a multi-purpose (both street legal and suitable for offroad racing) line of bikes with wacky names. With names like Super Rat (1969), Wombat (1972), Dirt Squirt (1973), and Combat Wombat (1974), to name a few, the
Hodaka was a success. Reynolds is the proud owner of a Combat Wombat, a Dirt Squirt, with its classic chrome tank, a Thunder Dog and a Road Toad. Reynolds is quick to point out three things: His bikes all run. They are not for sale. He doesn’t work on other people’s motorcycles. He finds most of his motorcycles by word of mouth, but did say he checks out the classifieds and other sources from time to time. He once made a trip to a suburb of Chicago to look at one motorcycle that was for sale. That trip netted 14 motorcycles and two additional trips to pick up what didn’t fit in the trailer; the “mother-load”, so to speak. If its parts you’re looking for, it’s likely that Alan has what you’re looking for. Smaller parts are organized in tubs by make/model, while others, such as tanks, tires, and other larger parts, are organized on shelves and hang on the walls like art. You can find Alan and his son, Danny, also a motorcycle collector, at many of the flea markets around the state. I was privileged to “tour” three of the Reynolds’ buildings which share the space with other family collections. I learned that there are other locations which house more motorcycles, more parts, and more stories. Susan Mast

Saturday, June 9th the Iowa Coalition of Independent Riders in cooperation with ABATE of Iowa District 20 will throw the 3rd Annual Serving Armed Forces Everyday (S.A.F.E.) , Ride and Party. The festivities will start at 11:00 am at the Ickey Nickel located on 41st St., just off Business Hwy 75 in Sioux City, IA. Serving Armed Forces Everyday (S.A.F.E.) is a community non-profit (501c3) organization whose mission is to support members of the Armed Forces. The primary means of accomplishing this mission is by sending packages to deployed military personnel. They support the troops during deployment by sending care packages to all branches of the Armed Forces and invite families to customize care packages for their specific service members. In addition, they support military families by sponsoring activities to provide their children and other members of their family left behind, with things to do and people to share experiences with. This can help alleviate the feeling of isolation that can accompany the sense of separation and loss when a parent is deployed.
