Fall is here in all its glorious color. Crisp riding on a fall day is one of my favorite things to do in Iowa. Leather up, hit the road, and be safe. Critters, farm equipment, and road debris are prevalent so be alert! As you are getting your last rides in of the year, keep in mind why you are riding. We all ride for our own reasons; the freedom of the road, the wind in your face, the release from day to day monotony. Whatever your motivation is to swing a leg over your machine; get out there and enjoy the last few miles of the year.

were made and much discussion was had regarding insurance, safety, etc. Larry Meador, from Lanark, IL, agreed to help Kim with her patient’s request.
Hospice care has been around for many years. Whether in a terminally or seriously ill patient’s home or care facility, this service is designed to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of the patient, as well as the pain and symptoms the individual may be having. One of the services that many hospice care organizations provide is granting the patient a final wish. These “wishes” can range anywhere from trips across the country to a ride in a semi-truck and trailer. Such is the case of Rick Hopkins of Columbus Junction, IA. Rick wanted one last motorcycle ride. Fortunately for him, one of his HCI Hospice Care nurses was Kim Verrips, RN, CHPN, a motorcycle rider herself. When Kim heard Rick’s wish, she knew she could make it happen, but she didn’t know how. Rick was not strong enough to ride a motorcycle himself or even behind another biker. He would have to ride in his wheelchair, thought Kim. But how? While on a ride with a friend one day this summer, her question has answered. Kim and a friend were taking a break from a day out biking when she saw a man pull up to a watering hole on his motorcycle. His bike was fitted with a custom “sidecar”. What was special about this “sidecar” was that it had a ramp. Kim watched as a young man in a wheelchair backed down the ramp and into the parking lot. At that moment, Kim knew she had the answer to her dilemma. Now all she had to do was convince this guy to drive to Iowa to give Rick his last ride. Introductions

After all of the papers were signed, i’s dotted and t’s crossed, Kim had permission for Larry to take Rick for a ride. A date was set. Word of this significant ride spread amongst the local biker community. Donations were made to help offset Larry’s travel expenses. Several members of Rick’s family were present to witness this event, including his two sons from Sioux City who biked down to southeast Iowa to ride with their dad. Other caring people made sure that Rick had the proper riding gear. A leather jacket, chaps, cap, and goggles were loaned to him for the occasion. Once everything was in place, the wheelchair secured, and the riders were assembled, the ride was blessed by a hospice chaplain and fellow biker. The plan was to take Rick to some local towns and then return back to his care facility. At the time of departure, 28 motorcycles were in place for the ride, many of which did not know Rick or members of his family. They simply wanted to give this man the ride of his dreams. Footnote: Larry’s motorcycle is a 1998 95th Anniversary Edition Harley Davidson Classic. The “sidecar” was built by Kurt’s Sidecar in Mt. Morris, IL. It was an emotional morning for everyone who was in attendance. And Rick was nothing but smiling. - Susan

We’re all guilty of living life pretty much the same way. We get a picture of marriage, parenting, work, friendships, etc, from a mishmash of sources: our own parents, our friends, the TV. We may get a picture of what we think God is like from the same sources. Then we take off, assuming that we’re prepared for the situation, but in reality, we often find we’re living on the edge of one disaster or another because of our lack of knowledge. 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 57 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month I will revisit each county as a featured article. I will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa.
569.93 square miles and 17,534 residents. The county seat is Eldora, there are twelve towns and three more unincorporated towns, so there is most likely a little something for everyone!
I came into the county from the southwest and hopped on D65, which proved to be standard Iowa landscape, flat crop ground that looked and smelled like money! would take me north to Eldora. Eldora has a very historic town square. It is quite beautiful architecturally and has some great history if you have a moment to stop and look around. I kept on moving east and grabbed S56 north which is actually a county road through Pine Lake State Park. It is quite a scenic ride with plenty of great vantage points to view the river. My dad used to drive through this park every time he came to visit me; I always wondered why…now I understand. Definitely worth the ride! If you have time, a little further up the S56 on the west side of the road there is a lookout to view the highway 20 bridge and the Iowa River corridor. There is a shelter, informational markers and a rest room! I wanted to make it to Iowa Falls so I kept on S56 hoping to hook up with D15. There is a little western jog you need to take on 120th St. D15 lead me right back to the scene of the youthful indiscretion. On this trip I sampled Hardin Counties hospitality as opposed to their “long arm of the law”. Some interesting things to stop and see are the statue of Chief

By 2:00 I was hungry so I found D20 and headed west on a hunt for the town of Alden and the Brickhouse. Wow, was this place worth the drive! It had a unique menu and a huge variety to their bar. The food was excellent, but don’t come wanting a burger or fries, you will not find them here. What you will find is great pizza, awesome appetizers and flavorful steaks; they also offer the Eagle City Wineries locally grown and bottled wines. The same gentleman owns a row of businesses and he takes care of them and his employees. I can get behind a guy like that. In the outside area you get a beautiful view of a dam. I hear they have live music from time to time; you can sit on the old high school bleachers or under the grain bin awning. All surprisingly tastefully done! It was getting late in the day and was time to head towards home, so I enjoyed the ease of travel south on state highway 65. As my trip to Hardin County came to an end I reflected on the fact that there comes a time in our lives when one should go back and revisit some old memories, I realized what they have led me to where I am today and that is just fine by me! I believe he was aiming for my head as he cut loose with whatever he had been eating. It missed my head by a couple of inches and splattered down the back of my jacket, onto the seat and rear fender.

2 Million Bikers to DC 9-11-2013 The 2 Million Biker to DC ride from inception to kick stands up took a mere twenty two days to organize! According to Washington DC Police 1.2 million bikers and people participated in this historic ride yet few outside the biking world have heard of it. The largest political rally in US history and it doesn’t rate a shout out on the evening news. Really?! Actually the disdain displayed by selfserving politicians and the feckless media that protects them, clarifies the rationale behind the ride far better than I ever could.

On a personal note I skipped the Interstate crossing Iowa on Highway 34 which was as pretty a ride as could be imagined. Next year my plan is to attempt to make most of the trip on the “National Highway” 40 which winds its way to the Capital. Since the unveiling of the new Indian® motorcycles in South Dakota the first part of August, there has been quite a bit of talk about the new machines. It is of particular interest here in Iowa, as they are built right here in our great state in Spirit Lake. Since the purchase of the iconic brand by Polaris® Industries in April of 2011, there has been much work put into the new rides. The fact that there is another American, and Iowa built product on the road for the two wheel market is quite interesting to me to say the least. The work put into the final product has been immense, and not without the help of old school Indian® motorcycle gurus, one is Ron Ronfeldt of Harlan, Iowa. On You Tube, if you search for Indian® Heritage Ride you will find a short clip about a group of Polaris® engineers that came to Iowa to ride some of Ron’s old bikes. You can almost say that they built the new bikes from the cues of the old bikes, with updates for current technology, a pretty impressive engineering feat in itself. They come with fully skirted fenders, classic lines, and even an Indian® head on the front fender. Nostalgia meets power and comfort. This all sets the stage for what is being touted as a new choice in American motorcycles. Currently, there is not an Indian® dealership in Iowa, so to get to check out these rides, we had to go up to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to the Indian® Demo Days at Vern Eide MotoPlex aka Mid-America Motoplex. This place offers just about anything to ride on the street, dirt, and even water. It is a powersports superstore. They don’t handle all brands, but they do have most! Just off of I-90 and I-29, this place is easy to find and get to, as well as a wonderful crew that welcomed Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa in with open arms to check things out. They can be found online at http://www.midamericamotoplex.com The new rides are offered in three different models. The models are the Indian®® Chief® Classic, Indian®® 30 - TRMI NOVEMBER 2013
Chief® Vintage, and the Indian®® Chieftan™. All three new models come in one of three colors, red, blue, or black. They followed suit with the traditional styling by offering traditional colors. All of the specs on these new critters can be found online at www. Indian®motorcycle.com so we will not regurgitate all that here. All three models are equipped with the new Thunderstroke 111 motor, which is a monster with 119 ft/lbs of torque. Mated in the engine case is the integrated transmission and primary with a six speed gear box and a gear drive wet clutch set up. The new power train has some similarity to the Victory motorcycle drive train, but with a very different feel, and throaty exhaust note. The bikes come with leather seats that are also akin to the vintage feel of the bikes. The leather is beautiful on its own, with the varied color and markings of actual leather. When throwing a leg over the new motorcycles, despite the weight, it has a wonderful balance and feel to the machine. It pulls up straight and has a nice saddle position and height. The seat height is comfortable for the short to mid-range height riders, but with most motorcycles, the lanky folks may feel a bit scrunched. The different models handlebars each seem to match the seating position well, and unless one feels the need for some higher bars, are quite comfortable as they are produced. The floor boards are large, with a nice width and length to allow rider movement without interference with controls, and allow the rider to change positions for comfort on the long haul. The boards are also rubber isolated to help with long ride comfort. They hydraulic clutch is smooth with positive action, and the brake lever is adjustable for rider comfort. The rear brake pedal is well positioned and easy to find even in emergent situations, and the brake action is smooth and very effective. These things will move, so they followed suit with great brakes, anti-lock brakes to boot. The handlebar controls are large and easy to access, even with gloved hands, with a slight downside of the control boxes being slightly bulky. The fit and finish on the bikes is overall a success with a great look and feel. Many things on the new Indian®s that come stock are optional or only available on the accessory market in some other brands. The handlebar controls and front end are chromed as well as the engine covers, braided stainless brake lines set off the front end as well as white wall tires and laced wheels. Real leather seats and accessories, anti-lock brakes, keyless ignition, and a dash information system similar to most automobiles these days help make the new bikes as much a part of the new technological world as the looks keep it nostalgic. A couple of things stood out though as far as visual appeal. On the Vintage with the windshield, the inner metal support cross piece chrome was lackluster at best. It appears as if the metal preparation was not done the best as the chrome

followed the pitted metal without a smooth finish. One other small item was the fabulous chrome headlamp nacelle that gives a vintage look is secured with two screws on the top that are not chrome plated. Not anything to keep someone from buying, but noticeable for sure. The hard bags on the Chieftan are spacious and have plenty of room for whatever you want to throw in them, and the style matches the lines of the bike despite being a new addition to the Indian® line. The inner walls of the bags themselves have some flex to them that is alarming and the seal for the lid is three pieces instead of one, so may have some issues with that in the future, but with a five year warranty, these issues should pop up and be alleviated. Overall they have a fit and finish that is wonderful and eye catching. Taking off down the road, the bikes are smooth and nimble. Shifting is effortless with good clutch action, and a toe only shifter. Acceleration is amazing and sets you back in the seat, pretty much at any RPM and gearing. The torque is readily felt and quite impressive. They offer a smooth ride no matter which model, but even with two large riders, they float over most obstacles smoothly. They grip the road like no other and make it a pleasure to dig into corners effortlessly. Heavy crosswinds even on Interstate travel at
high speeds is smooth and without issue. The bikes stay put on the set line and are minimally affected by the wind. Cruising on a warm day, the heat of the motor was not even noticeable even at slower stop and go traffic in town. In town, on the highways, and Interstate travel were all immensely enjoyable. It is hard to put into words the feel of these new bikes. Best bet is to try one out when you have the opportunity. Not as much to try to make anyone jump ship, but to broaden horizons about what else is available. One of the downsides of the brand is the lack of an extensive dealer network found with most other brands. With as much time and money that was spent on building these machines, I would guess they will also spend time and money on dealership expansion. Another drawback is the availability of these machines. In Sioux Falls during the demo days, we were told there were a lot on order, and quite a few pre-sold, but delivery timeframe was uncertain. Overall the new machines have classic styling; they are smooth, powerful, and well built. It is not going to replace any other American brands, but offers another choice in the American market place for heavyweight cruisers. Check them out, it may not be your cup of tea, but I am sure you will start seeing them on the road soon! Vernon
If you’re reading this review expecting to learn about the fancy specs on the 2014 Indian motorcycles, you can stop reading right now. However, if you’re looking for a review of this new line of Chiefs from a lady rider’s perspective, you’ve come to the right place.
If you like all the newest technology, you’re going to love the extras on the Chieftain model, mainly the Bluetooth connectivity and power windshield. I didn’t sync my phone and music but had fun playing with the windshield. Even at its lowest setting, the wind went right over me with no buffeting. Fully extended, I got fresh air through the strategically placed air vents but it didn’t rip my helmet off. In fact, I rode the Chieftain on a super windy day and didn’t even struggle to keep it tracking in a straight line.
I had the opportunity to test all three new Indian models (Chief Classic, Chief Vintage, and Chieftain) as a demo ride leader. My favorite? How can a girl choose? My specs? I’m a woman rider standing about 5’9” with over 15 years riding experience. My current ride is a 2007 Harley Street Glide.
Besides the obvious fairing, which will cut the wind down, there were 2 major ride differences between the Chieftain and Classic/ Vintage models. Because of air suspension, the ride was much smoother on the Chieftain. Crossing railroad tracks was like driving a Cadillac… smooth as silk.
Indians from a Woman’s Perspective
When I first threw my leg over the saddle of the Chieftain, I was worried about the weight of the bike. With my feet firmly planted on the ground, thanks to the low 26’ seat height, I stood her up easily. Her balance was impeccable! The bike looked deceivingly heavier than it was. I couldn’t wait to power up the Thunder Stroke 111 motor! Equating to about 1800 CCs, I was a little nervous, as I’d never handled a motorcycle with this much power. However, once I got her on the highway, my concerns were literally blown away. She powered up quickly with a slight turn on the throttle. I noticed right away the clutch control was smooth and effortless. I barely squeezed the clutch lever while shifting, which made it easy getting up to speed. No more shaking out a sore clutch hand. Ever forget what gear you’re in? You’ll never forget on any Chief model. The 2014 Indian displays each current gear as you shift. That was pretty cool… thanks Indian engineers! Love this option! The 2nd difference was maneuverability at lower speeds. The front tire on the Chieftain is closer to the frame, shortening the overall length of the bike. This makes turning easier and parking lot maneuvers less challenging. This is a plus for lady riders who don’t want to muscle a bike into a parking spot. When I think Indian, the picture that most likely comes to my mind mirrors the Chief Vintage. I love the iconic Indian cut front fender complete with war bonnet, sleek enclosed back tire, and distressed tan leather fringed saddlebags and seat. Beautiful! If you’re not a fringe person, simply rip it off ! The fringe is attached with Velcro! Cool idea… My pick? If I didn’t already own a bagger, I would buy a Chieftain in a heartbeat. Starting at $24K, it’s a turnkey motorcycle where you don’t need to add bling… everything is already chromed. A husband is visiting his wife in hospital where she has been in a coma for several years. On this visit he decides to rub her left breast instead of just talking to her. While doing so, the wife lets out a sigh. Pleasantly surprised, the husband runs out and tells the doctor. “That is a good sign,” suggests the doctor, “Why don’t you try rubbing her right breast to see if there is any reaction.” The husband returns to his wife’s bedside and rubs her right breast which brings a moan from his wife. He rushes out again and tells the doctor. The doctor thinks this is amazing and could perhaps be a real breakthrough. The doctor then suggests the man return to her bedside and performs oral sex. More than happy to accommodate, the husband returns to his wife’s bedside to do his deed. Some five minutes later, the husband comes running from his wife’s bedside screaming for the doctor. “What’s going on?” asks the doctor. The husband yells, “My wife stopped breathing!” “What happened?” asks the doctor. “Everything seemed to be looking good a few minutes ago.” The husband replies, “She choked.”
A woman in her 30’s was taking her mother, who was in her 50’s to the gynecologist. After dropping her mother off, she and her daughter ran a few errands, and then returned to the doctor. Back-Door Dealings On September 26th Secretary of State John Kerry signed the U.N. Gun Ban Treaty. This means that our executive branch is ready, and willing to give over our National Sovereignty to the United Nations. Now or at any time in the future, with the full backing of the Obama Administration, our constitutional rights can be given over to the U.N. All it takes is a ratification vote by the Senate. In fact, Article 5 of the treaty mandates countries establish a “National Control List”- or National Gun Registration database. We all know that gun registration is merely the first step toward outright confiscation. How come no national media outlets published this information? It certainly is news. It seems to me that the major networks only report things that make the Obama administration look good. All objectivity has been lost.

Big government folks as a rule don’t like independent thinkers or for people to have the ability to stand up for themselves in the face of tyranny.

Independent Trikers, a non-profit organization based in Bloomfield, IA, started about 4 years ago with 10 members that like to ride, camp, build or work on our rides and to help others; our organization has grown to almost 30 members. Some members have been in a BTW, Brothers of the Third Wheel chapter and Southeast Trikers; but here in Iowa we wanted to be on our own so we started our own organization. Our group started as trikers which made most two-wheelers not interested in our group, although we are all independent riders. Now members of our group come from all walks of life from young couples to an older couple in their 70’s, bikers and cagers, ABATE members and AMA members. Dues are kept to a minimum. We have no written rules and only a few spoken ones; no drugs, keep alcohol to a minimum while camping and no drinking and driving or riding. Also, have respect for all. We are an organization not an MC so there is no prospecting and patches are bought not earned, although you will earn it eventually if you help with the projects. Nothing we do is mandatory. Meetings are once a month, 1st Sunday at 1 pm. and almost any mode of transportation is accepted into our group; trikes, bikes, cars, etc. We do not discriminate. We have members from as far away as Muscatine, Iowa, Ft Madison, Burlington, Keokuk, Farmington, and locals. Some of our organized activities include ice cream runs instead of beer runs, camp-ins and rides to various places Helping with various local charities is near and dear to our hearts. Some of the events that we partake in to raise money is; yard sales, a Trike and Bike Show in Farmington at their Strawberry Festival, benefit auctions, breakfast, and softball tournaments among other things. Two of the charities that we help with are; “I Care” which is food baskets and toys for the holidays and Back Pack Ministries which ensures eligible school children have food on the weekends. We donate food, turkeys, or hams to 2 food pantries The Lords Cupboard in Bloomfield and the Farmington food pantry; last year we donated 30 hams to each. We also make monetary donations to some individuals with life threatening illnesses to help with bills or transportation, a cancer foundation Look to the Stars, and this year a toy run to the U of I children’s Hospital. We also like to pay it forward to the community for their help with the stuff we do. On Christmas Day we have a FREE COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DINNER, here in Bloomfield. This will be our 5th year. We have all the usual fixins and last most of the day. Our goal is to make sure no one leaves hungry and is for everyone not just the poor, elderly or lonely; it is for the community. In past years we have had people from Central Iowa and Missouri come. We have also had as few as 75 and as many as 300 people in attendance. Our local communities are the greatest and are usually always willing to help with a good cause. People say no one does anything to help anyone any more, well I say they are wrong. Businesses and individuals in our area and in the communities we do stuff for always seem to come through. I think the reason is RESPECT! We respect them so they reciprocate and respect us. That is us, Independent Trikers. This is why we have grown from a few to a lot. Our main rule is RESPECT. We don’t care what you ride or drive, if you are rich or poor, what color you are, or your religion, if you are a member of our organization and you can treat others with respect and want to be treated with respect we are here. Our group claims no territory as to show respect for the MC’s in this state. We respect the MC’s and would like to have their respect for what we do and who we are.
