C Ca Call all ll it crazy, call it stupid, ca call all ll iitt awesome, and call it whatever you like, which is the way I do it. There has been many a winter in my riding days that I have been on two wheels in all twelve months of the year. It helps to keep me sane I guess. Just ask Melanie and the kids, a short ride makes my attitude much more palatable during the winter months. I am not saying that I become a terrible asshole when it is too cold out to ride, but she might! Keep them going as long as you can, but be as safe as possible if you do partake of a late season ride or two.

Riding a bike is not for sissies. Everyone that chooses to get on that motorcycle on a regular basis realizes the inherent danger that accompanies riding. The trick is to have that in mind while also keeping the situational awareness level up. This was again reinforced in me the other day as the young girl texting blew through the light without a glance. Fortunately I was aware and saw it coming - thank you, Jesus. The crazy thing was that when I honked my horn and she finally came to, I was given a look of “What’s wrong with you and why are you inconveniencing me?” In spite of texting laws, the frequency of and the accompanying attitudes do not seem to be improving. Throw in all the road construction projects that the contractors are scrambling to complete before the weather runs out and bikers have a pretty big target on our backs. We have a construction intersection at the bottom of the bluff here in town. Part of the day you have blinking red lights both directions but early evening they magically transform into blinking red one direction and blinking yellow the other. If a person is not paying attention to the signals as well as other drivers, disaster awaits.

The motorcycling community in the United States is not an insignificant part of the population. Based upon some admittedly unscientific research, one in 33 residents of the United States is the registered owner of a motorcycle. In Iowa, that number increases to one in 17. 7. That is roughly 3% of the U.S. population and 6% of Iowans. Moreover, that is only counting g registered motorcycles and doesn’t include off-road and other types of motorcycles that do not require registration. Iowa ranks 19th in the number of motorcycles registered out of the 50 states. In other words, a huge cross-section of our population (people from all walks of life) comprisee the motorcycling community.

And just like me, I’ll bet none of you have ever seen numerous law enforcement vehicles on that nonstate highway running to the park. Why then do we rout routinely see such a high amount of law enfo enforcement presence in that area and on th that highway during the rally? If they hhave justification, they should have to show us the bases; I remain dubious.

It is easy to justify law enforcement’s presence, i.e. the means, if you’re predisposed to giving them a lot of the benefit of doubt that a problem exists, i.e. the ends, where there is or has been a reason Most of the motorcycling community such as safety concerns, lawlessness, in the United States, and especially et etc. However, as responsible citizens, Iowa and other northern states, is what we must ask, do the ends justify the w most would consider recreational means? My main objective with the magazine is to let the bikers of Iowa know what is going on and places of interest they may not know about. One of them is Marne Iowa, a small town in the west central part of the state, population 120. It sits between Des Moines and Omaha, 7 miles North West of Atlantic. Marne is unique in that the only 4 businesses in town are biker owned. The body shop is owned by Phil Hetrick who rides a Triumph. Steve Nelson has the machine shop and rides a Fatboy. The Roadhouse Bar is run by the Preister brothers and both ride Harleys. Dennis Preister happens to be the local ABATE chapter coordinator. Also in town is Baxter Cycle which is currently an authorized dealer of Triumph and Royal Enfield brand of motorcycles. It is owned by Randy Baxter which happens to also be the Mayor of Marne. Jeremy Pendergast, sales manager, told me the story of how Randy started out repairing British motorcycles in his spare time and figured out he was making more money than his full time welding job for a farm repair shop. He decided to go into business for himself and on

January 1, 1977 he open Baxter Cycle. Steady growth and acquisition of parts lead him to the bigger building he is at now. He acquired his Triumph dealership in 1982. Unfortunately, The Triumph Company was in poor health, and soon went out of business. Throughout the ‘80 and early ‘90s, Baxter Cycle continued to work on British bikes of all kinds and sell parts as he became one of the few places to get parts for the older bikes. He took on a Moto Guzzi dealership as the primary means of support. Randy kept collecting old British bikes and parts and had markets all across America and overseas as well. Triumph started reestablishing itself as a viable motorcycle company and began importing motorcycles again into the U.S. in 1995. Eager to get back on board, Randy talked to the Triumph Company justifying that he felt that he had earned the right for a new dealership. Since then, his business has grown as the demand for vintage British motorcycles has increased as had the interest in both Triumph and Royal Enfield. He is on the verge of opening a new showroom with a brand new building in Marne. The

open house for it is scheduled for November 17th. The Baxter Cycle Annual Motorcycle Rally is held on the third weekend in August; with this year being the 36th or 37th annual (Randy has lost count). It started out as a birthday party and has grown into a mini Rally comparatively. The whole town pitches in, the Community Club serves breakfast with the help of the Boy Scouts, the Fire Department does lunch Saturday, and the Roadhouse Bar has the party Saturday night with fireworks. Three years ago, they added a consignment auction with nicely restored bikes of all makes and a few basket project bikes. One of the featured bikes this year was a 1947 Harley Davidson WL model that sold for $13,000. There is camping in the city park. At the shop you will find Triumph and Royal Enfield demo rides and a few vendors. The National Motorcycle Museum people are always on hand. Sunday is the Bike Show and free hot dog lunch and homemade ice cream in the city park. So if you love older motorcycles, they put on a great show with restored motorcycles of all makes, you may even see a Vincent, one of my personal favorite brands. See you on down the road. This shot was taken on the same rural Templeton, Iowa farm that the Sextro’s ran their prohibition whiskey enterprise. The site is now owned by Augie, country music star Brad Morgan’s father. Scott’s vintage Triumph was a fitting addition to the history of the place for sure as the outlaw feel just drips from this cool old ride. As you can see on the barn boards, the name Sextro is still there, along with a legendary burn caused by a pipe from Lorine’s still being too close to the walls while she ran her Rye Whiskey…The same whiskey you will find today in each bottle of Iowa Legendary Rye. Go take a tour of the distillery in Carroll, get yourself a bottle, and taste an Iowa Legend for yourself.

We need d to bbe Thankful h k l ddammit i bbecause that h iis what h we ddo this time of the year Ready for reminders that you need to be “Thankful” for the many blessing we have in our life, and we do. I really don’t have that many people that are in my circle of life that takes all this we have for granted. Sure we don’t wear it on our sleeves every moment of every day, damn can you imagine how completely annoying that would be if someone did! The very consideration makes me wanna puke. Okay, not full on puke in the pure essence of the word, but more like that baby puke taste you get in the back of your throat, almost triggering the gag reflex, not quite there, but even a couple swigs of water still leaves that crap taste in your mouth. Yea, pretty much that feeling if people were to do that, you know, always talking about how thankful they are. We are blessed in so many ways, we get it, and November is the time to be Thankful. No, I am not a curmudgeon, I am really not! I have shitloads of things to be thankful and yea, I should be more open about the things, take the time to express it, but that said, I don’t think I take for granted what I am thankful for. Yes, we are all thankful for the family that loves us. The ones that have crossed our paths molded our very being and shaped us, for better or worse as the person we are today. I will also admit, and I know this goes against my “man card” rules, but I love Thanksgiving, heck, I like Halloween, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, all the important holidays. Note, I didn’t mention Valentine’s Day, we’ve covered it before in Thunder Roads Iowa, it sucks and it’s dumb, but hey, I am thankful for it because I like chocolate, I love my wife and if I suck it up, choke down how I feel, celebrate VD day romantically, it will ensure I have a GREAT March 14th holiday, the best holiday on the calendar and I am REALLY thankful for that one. Hint, it’s NOT Pie day, it’s the OTHER great holiday. Need another clue? Fine, it involves steak.

call Terry, because that is his name, and I became friends while talking about old Indian bikes. He was riding this kick ass Indian cop bike from the mid 40’s. It was a four banger that just purred, had these old school, beach-style, cop bike handlebars, a marker on the speedo that they used to match how fast the offender was going that was wicked neat. The cops would match the speed of the car, hit a button that marked the speed and they could then write up the ticket. I said some pro biker, beef, pork or the like comment on my show one day, Terry was in his tractor and said he was laughing his ass off and nodding in agreement he decided he was going to email me and show his approval. We exchanged emails, talking about bikes, farms, tractors, baseball, you know, and American stuff. Finally, I said, I was going to be at a bike night coming up, and that I’d love to meet him in person. I am thankful we met, we became friends and have been for many years and I buy a freezer full of beef and pork from him every year. I am VERY thankful for him; he is a good dude and has a wicked collection of Indians. I am not even sure HE knows how many Indians he owns. (Not even kidding, Terry has them all over the place) I am also thankful for the connections I have made with so many kick ass bikers over the years. I may or may not have a lot of things in common with my biker brothers and sisters but the riding and having each other’s back while riding, is something that bridges the gaps of different thoughts, beliefs and passions. Here is a dirty little secret about my involvement in the two wheel world; I am a bit of an outsider, a rebel, a nonconformist. After all this time, it might be time for me to come out of the closet with this. I can’t believe I am going to admit this in a published, written forum that can be stamped as a mark in me until the end of times. But here goes, it needs to be released. I ride a metric.

Yes, yes, yes I know I know, but I grew up on Honda trail bikes, the dirt bikes, and then their street bikes. I use to steal my old man’s CB 360 T to go see girls, my first adult bike I am thankful for Steak. I love beef, the industry, and the was 750 and the game changer was, while in High School, way it feeds the world, smells on the grill and becomes the my uncle John rode up in a new, Emerald Green, Honda most important part between two buns in the form of a ham- Goldwing and it was STUNNING. I am thankful my old man, grandpa, three uncles and a cousin, all loved to ride and supported anything anybody rode, they just loved bikes and that love was something I picked up on at an early age. Riding, all my life, I am super thankful for that. Speaking of my grandpa, talk about a great dude, but he was a voracious reader and imposed a love of reading and to a certain extent, writing, on me as well. He would read anything; he could talk about any subject and had friends all over the country because of his love of guns, beef, hunting and antiques of various kinds. He really was connected in a world that wasn’t connected; I have often wondered what he would be like in the computer age. He loved to learn and connect and he would have thrived with the new technology. I am very thankful he took the time when I was young, saw a glimmer of hope perhaps and educated me to a bigger, wider, world of knowledge. He also provided me as a young man, my first sample of bourbon, you know, for medicinal reasons, but I rather enjoyed it and have appreciated the “medicinal” qualities of bourbon for year. I am thankful for all the great people that have come through my life, the bikers, the brothers, the bastards and more that makes this shit all worth living and enjoying, this riding stuff is pretty damn awesome to be thankful. As was my grandpa, after all, he bought me my 2nd and 4th metric. Todd “Crash” Davis Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

When Sons of Anarchy debuted in 2008, a strange thing began happening in the biker world; all of a sudden, everybody wanted to hop on two wheels, sporting a pair of Converse All Stars and bedazzled jeans and be a badass. I’m sure this was a stellar opportunity for the he retail industry, y, but m members for the long-term of the biker community m munity and members of motorcycle clubs alike, the fictional biker world portrayed on television was a bit of a thorn in one’s side.

and tons of chrome. These bikes are equipped with more flash and color than was ever seen in the Sons of Anarchy world. There are even a few more Road Glides and Street Glides this time around.

But I digress…. the point I am reaching to make is this; Sons of Anarchy created a monumental surge not only in All Star wearers, but in the number of HarleyDavidson Dyna Super Glides roaming around the streets. To be sure you were super badass, you had to have the custom T-bars with high risers, front drag fairing, 2-into-1 performance exhaust, and raised rear suspension. These bikes are called club-style, outlaw, or West Coast, and flat black was the color of choice in hometown Charming, California.

Those things being said, here are a few things I have learned about television and the real world. If this paragraph contains information that you find offensive…please keep it to yourself…this is just my personal observation/opinion. Not all patch holders sell cocaine. Converse All Stars are not proper riding attire…nor are daisy dukes. Clubhouses don’t come equipped with hordes of strippers as a standard. Sewing a patch you bought “cuz it was cool” on your back is a bad idea. Not everyone who rides a motorcycle has a hidden agenda. Dudes with bedazzled pockets should not call themselves “bikers”. If you trailer your bike everywhere you go, then get it out to “tootle” around the block…you are not a biker, you just have a bike. If you don’t stick your neck out to help another once in a while…you are no one’s “Brother”. No fictional television show can turn you into a biker. Be yourself…no patch required…just ride. That is what makes you a biker.

Now while this may y provide p a bit of hope for what wha at we w all see tearing up p pa pavement in the next nex couple n of ye years, ear the fact re remains ema that ine inexperienced riders r are going to catch the “biker bug” and before you know it, you will That being see people said, we have trying to now been look badass given a new on a custom S interpretation Softail Deluxe wi 22-inch of the biker with ape Now if a lifestyle in the apes. u know kn spinoff, Mayans you much a ach any ythi about M.C. Although the potential for putting some cool a patch as a thug. bikes out on the road is promising.

So…. what do we have to look forward to in the motorcycle world if the Mayans M.C. influence takes off full force and expands beyond the confines of Santo Padre, California? Being a Latino based storyline, as one would expect, the Mayans MC bikes are a different breed entirely. Gone are the flat black Dynas, and in their place come the lowrider culture influenced H-D Road Kings, Heritage Softails, and Softail Deluxe models with long pipes, fishtail tips, ape hangers, whitewall tires, full-skirt fenders,

Pleasant. Our Chapters are usually found riding most weekends for charities, veterans’ groups, honoring other service members and their families, or just spending some time in the wind with our Brothers and Sisters. We honor soldiers of all ages and from all conflicts, and we always remember those who have gone before us. As we continue to grow, we are able to serve more veterans. We are maintaining the mission by helping those we can. After all, that is what we do... “Vets Helping Vets”. It’s not just our motto or a patch we wear...... it is our mission. Chapter 39-3 This chapter covers the Northeastern Iowa, Dubuque area. This year our chapter presented a check for $4000 to Retrieving Freedom, which is a program that helps to train service dogs for veterans with service connected disabilities. We also presented 1 of 15 Chaplin Jim Burley Scholarship Awards for $1000 to Derick Larson. Chapter 39-4 This chapter covers the Davenport, Clinton, and Muscatine areas. We have had a very busy year. In August we had our first Chapter APR, The SPC Jordan Byrd Memorial Ride which included 5 stops, at each stop we recognized a Fallen Soldier from that town, we had several raffles, and a silent auction with a portion of the money going to SPC Jordan Byrd’s young son. We also assisted with the labor needed to open The Freedom House in Davenport; it was an old mansion that has been refurbished into 10 studio apartments for homeless veterans. Our chapter donated money and received donations from Walmart for the Quad Cities Veterans Outreach Centers Annual Thanksgiving dinner and winter clothing giveaway that assisted over 300 families in our area. After approaching several

organizations in the Quad Cities area, we were able to raise $5000.00 to replace the flagpoles at the Davenport Memorial Gardens Cemetery for the Veterans section. The ribbon cutting ceremony for this project will be held during Memorial Day weekend. We financially assisted Don Gordon, a Vietnam vet who had a stroke. We financially assisted SPC Wagner and her family after a fire destroyed their home. We held an annual bike wash, trap shoot, and chili cookoff and Super Bowl party. We donated $9000.00 to the Quad Cities Veteran Outreach Center to help them assist homeless and needy veterans and their families. We are continuing to work on a wheelchair ramp project. Over the last several months we have had several veterans’ families reach out to us with requests for wheelchair ramps for disabled veteran family members. What we have learned is that there are wheelchair ramps on houses out there that aren’t being used anymore that can be repurposed. We volunteer our time and resources to go and remove the ramp, transport it and then install it on a disabled veteran’s house. Without a wheelchair ramp many veterans are forced to stay secluded in their homes. We have installed 4 wheelchair ramps since May and we hope to double that next year. If you know of any ramps that could be donated to this project, please contact chapter 39-4. Chapter 39-5 Combat Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces came together on September 29, 2018 to celebrate the newest chapter in Iowa. The Stand-Up Party for 39-5 was a day of comradery among veterans and supporters to welcome the newest chapter. 39-5 has an area of responsibility covering Southeastern Iowa. This is an association with a mission to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Our chapter will be hosting activities like group motorcycle rides, fundraisers, food gatherings, and annual Patriot Rides. In fact, we will have our Kickoff APR May 24-26, 2019 at the Van Buren County Fairgrounds in Keosauqua if you want to help show us some support!

tomer service!!! I chose the Dino Burger with a side order of Macaroni and Cheese. First the burger. This is not your typical bar burger (as if you hadn’t already figured that out... how many bars serve gourmet quality food?) It consisted of a 1/3 lb. hand pressed mound of beef, done to your liking. On top of that pour a liberal dose of Dino’s sauce, a BBQ type sauce with a sweet tang and bit of a bite in the after taste. It complimented the burger in spectacular fashion! But wait that’s not all! Now lay a pile of crispy apple-wood smoked bacon on top and cover it with a layer of melted cheddar cheese!!!! This was the king of the sandwiches in a court of spectacularly delectable choices!!!! Let us not forget about the Macaroni and Cheese! A bowl full of macaroni swimming in a delicious white cheese sauce with just a sprinkling of shredded cheddar cheese to make it as visually stunning s as a it is delecd table!!!! ta

Take a 5 star restaurant and combine it with a Cheersesqe neighborhood bar and you have Dino’s Bar & Grill! When I learned of this establishment I was told it would be best if you had a reservation. Pish, we don’t need no stinking reservations!!! Well, we dodged a bullet. We got there early enough that we were able to snatch up one of the last 3 available tables! While there we saw all tables filled and all the chairs at the bar occupied. Now, mind you, it’s not the largest establishment that I have been in but I have to tell you that the food here rivals some of the largest food emporiums that I have had the pleasure of visiting!!!! They run specials Monday through Thursday. We checked Dino’s out on a Monday so the special of the day was All Night Happy Hour 4 PM to Close. (They also run Happy Hour Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6 PM) Happy Hour includes half priced appetizers (excluding halfsize seafood nachos), $5 Local Craft Beer, Select Mules, Select Wine, Select Martinis, $3 Well Drinks. We took advantage of the Happy Hour special and had the Seafood Nachos. I’m struggling to find adequate adjectives to describe this plate of awesomeness!!! It was a delicious heaping pile of crisp wanton chips piled high with fresh shrimp, scallops, marinated basil, diced tomatoes and coated in melted mozzarella cheese and house made Newberg sauce. A full order of these could easily be a meal all by itself!
