ON THE COVER This month we bring you a very unique build of a bike. It is part rubbermount FL with a 5 speed, part chopper, and part Knucklehead. The bike is a mixture of years, parts, and seemed fitting with the month of Hallows. Along with the interesting bike is the lovely vixen Laura White in only her “trick or treat” costume. She resides in Kimballton and was kind enough to grace our pages even with very short notice. Thanks Laura!

Well you have tt this month. I just had to tell you all thank you very much for all of support shown for my cover debut. I feel truly honored and thankful to Jr. Carter’s daughter’s for allowing us to help get the word out about their unique piece of history.

The 2011 Thunder In The Sand (T.I.T.S.) event was held Labor Day weekend in Conesville, IA. October is here and so are the cooler temperatures. Be observant for signs and symptoms of hypothermia. Mild hypothermia may include shivering, faster breathing, trouble speaking, confusion, lack of coordination, fatigue, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and poor coordination. On the Pole Stage, the crowd enjoyed the show put on by the women who volunteered to do a little dirty dancing while wearing their birthday suit. A “What T-Shirt” contest was held on Saturday. A poker www.thunderroadsiowa.com

TRMI OCTOBER 2011 - 5

We were asked to come hang out with the River City Victory Riders at Werner Cycle Works in Omaha on August 18th. This was the night before the American Victory Rally, a Victory owners rally that has been held in Spirit Lake for the past few years. I must say that despite the brand name on our scooters, we were welcomed in with open arms. The route to Spirit Lake has always taken a stop in Omaha at the local Victory dealership, and this year that position is proudly filled by Tom and Crew at Werner Cycle Works. These guys had a special area roped off, and there was food, drink, and entertainment brought in for the benefit of the travelers coming from the south and way out west as well as the River City group. Some BBQ, drinks, and desserts were provided for the gathering so all were fed and refreshed. There were also some of the gals from Cigarros serving up some frosty beverages and offering for sale some of the sweet aromatic stogies. There were even a few of the Husker Hotties gals doing a bike wash. The evening got a little bit wet with some storms that blew through, but the spirit of the event shined through in the participants. The group was ready to ride, to take their bikes home, to Spirit Lake to the Victory manufacturing plant. The next morning the gathering reconvened at Werner for a send off by Tom and crew. Scott Lewis was the road Captain for the journey on the little roads of Iowa to the Rally grounds at Arnolds Park. Crawling upon his white Victory Vision, aptly named the “Great White Buffalo” Buffalo”, he led the group across the river to the Lazy Mule Parking lot in Council Bluffs to pick up a few more bikes. It was good to ssee the group of Victory motorcycles welcome in other brands as we w were joined by another Harley and w a couple of metric bikes. The route took us north on 191 through some of to the winding rolling hills of western th IIowa to Earling, then a skip over to Highway 59 and northbound and H into Denison. From there we fueled in uup and headed north on 39 to wind oour way up through some of Iowa’s bbeautiful corn country and finally hit Highway 71 to take us the rest of the H

way there. Before heading into Arnold Park, I had to take a diversion over to Everly to say hey to Tara at the Backroads Biker Leather Shoppe. This place and the people here are definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. Hell it is worth a special trip! After getting all settled in, it was off to the Rally grounds at Arnolds Park. I had not been to Arnolds Park for years, but it is just as I remember. Sitting alongside the lake, the shopping and food area are right next to the amusement park. The gathering is held on the large grassy area right next to the lake. It sure makes for a nice location that is very scenic. There were Victory test rides for anybody with a license that cared to check out the new rides, but first thing was a trip through the vendor area and to grab some vittles. th The place to go at events to get good grub T aand plenty of it is Crazy Lady’s Cafe. You will see these folks out at a lot of the biker w ggatherings, as well as other types of events aand the food and the interaction is well worth the stop. Other setups included everything th from parts, trikes, biker wear, Sharon’s fr Leather, a Victory motorcycle trailer as well L aas a couple of Iowa Victory Dealers: Van Wall aand BAK with their bikes and accessories for ssale and display. The Rally area at Arnolds Park is open to T aall. No gates, no fees, just come in and rregister for free at the Rally tent, and have fun. Included in th this is the great scenery, the vendor area, fun factory demo rides, as well as live performances by Kenny Wayne Sheppard Friday night and Big Head Todd and the Monsters Saturday night. Nothing g cooler than an outdoor lakeside show! Other entertainment during the Rally included plant tours, boat rides around the lakes, area rides, rodeo games, and a bike show just to name a few. There was tons to see and do, and even if you do not ride a Victory, it is worth a trip to check it out.

www.thunderroadsiowa.com

A portion of our time at the Rally was spent with a couple of cool cats with the Victory trailer. Here they had various bikes and displays to show off their products. Seeing the factory during the tour, and then checking out the display cutaway of the drive train makes for a complete picture. The technology used to build these bikes is quite impressive, im and Robert R Pandya and Zach Z Ness were there th to openly discuss d their part of o the Victory movement. m Robert R is the Public P Relations guy, g and Zach is of course, c part of the Ness N lineage, that has h been eating, sleeping, and s living motorcycles li since a young age. s Sitting down with the 23 year old grandson of motorcycle legend Arlen Ness made for an interesting morning. Sneakers, flat bill, large frame sunglasses, and bling jeans all led to what I call the “skate or die” type of look, but this was far from reality when chatting with this young man. We found Zach to be a very humble and honest young man, not scared to talk candidly about the sport of motorcycling, or his part in such. As an industry staple with the Ness name, it is nice to see the future of motorcycling is in good hands with Zach.

but the day to day operations at arlenness.com and Ness Motorcycles are left to Cory with Zach taking the role of “right hand man”. Their business has always been about making custom cool, and now with the expansion from the Harley world into the metric market, and now with a partnership with Victory, it is possible to see Ness inspired designs just about anywhere. The Ness family has also partnered with Victory motorcycles for some of the cutting edge design and styling cues that have made the Ness family what it is today. There are various versions of Victory motorcycles that are “Ness” special editions. These bikes are built on the same platforms as the stock production bikes, with added twists that make them more unique than a stocker. Arlen, Cory, and Zach have their own versions of different models that are quite appealing. They certainly stand out from the crowd. When we asked Zach how he likes the Victory/Ness partnership, he stated that it is a match made in heaven. Victory has the forward thinking attitude that allows Zach and his father to bring new ideas to the table with a commitment to be at the forefront of the industry in style, performance, and functionality. Keep your eye on this young man in the future for new and interesting products and ideas.

His work in the industry started 10 years ago coming in to work in his grandfather’s shop. Sweeping the floors, putting together chrome bolt kits, and all around menial tasks was his start into the glamorous world of motorcycling. He worked his way through the tasks knowing that it was a rite of passage for him to work, to learn, and to grow. As his knowledge of product and the industry grew, he was awarded by working his way up the ladder. A completion of a business degree has now allowed him the opportunity to work with his father Cory to run the family shop. Arlen, we are told, is still there every day, greeting customers,

2012 New Parts from the “Motor Company”

version which adds a touch of that raw aluminum look that is a huge trend right now. From there we move onto the new Slipstream Collection. This new collection mixes that chrome and rubber together nicely and they carry it from the mirrors to grips, pegs and even floorboards in both traditional D shape and swept wing styles.

Its official, the season is coming to a close. I saw my first empty field today. I’m not saying that it’s time to stop riding. To some people this is the best time of the year to ride with all of the colors changing and the cooler weather. During this time of year; much awareness is needed while traveling. Not only keeping an eye out for the brown and furry deer but also the green and yellow ones too. Getting back on track and continuing on with what I promised you last month about more NEW products from HDMC. For those of you who have been following the darker side of things… including me. Harley has finally produced BLACK adjustable highway peg mounts. I have had numerous people waiting for these to be produced and they are finally here. They are not the 360° adjustable ones which are the most popular mounts but shhh Kuryakyn has those in black if that is the style you prefer. Probably shouldn’t give props to an outside brand while talking about HDMC but why not. The prices are comparable to the traditional chrome ones. More on the black line of things; they have had black fork sliders out for a while but now they have made a complete front end kit that contains all the major parts to convert your front end to the dark side. For the FL bikes that don’t like the plain-Jane black cowbells that come with the kit they came out with the Edge Cut

Harley H l also l released l d a ffew new styles t l off rims i and d even a new finish. The new vapor wheel is my personal favorite wheel. It brings back the look of the classic Torque Thrust wheels found on many of the older muscle cars before the “Hot Wheels” style rims took over everything. The vapor wheel come stock in black on the New Dyna Switchback. This leads me to the downfall of these rims. They only have them available in the FLD model. Hopefully, more fitments in the near future for these wheels because with a price point under $500 they would look great on any bike in either the black or chrome or even in the new finish they released on the Agitator and Roulette wheels called Black Ice. Out of all the finishes I like this one the best because it combines the traditional chrome with the new school black to give you black chrome. I would like them to produce this on many more parts than just simply wheels. Come on Harley, GIVE ME WHAT I WANT! Ok so that won’t work but hey I have to try right. From this I take you to the new Skull & Chain collection. This collection combines the Willey G® Skull with a rhinestoneencrusted grill aka teeth for you more mature riders and a contrasting black chain around the rim. It is a nice collection and is put together very well. The catalog picture does not do it justice… this you should see in person. For you women riders (and some men) they

have added more items to the Diamond Ice collection. They now include front and rear speaker grilles, fuel cap trim rings, and indicator light trim ring for the FLH models. For you riders that have changed out your speakers to the BOOM!™ Speakers they now have trim rings to fit to add that little touch of chrome to those high performance speakers. I’m sure many of you out there have been waiting for Harley to come out with a new American Flag mount kit. I am pleased to tell you about the premium American Flag kit. You can now display Old Glory proudly from your luggage rack or other ½” diameter round bar in style. Screamin’ Eagle® came out with some superior products also. Have you installed Harley’s Screamin’ Eagle® Heavy Breather kits on your 2008 and newer bagger and noticed the not so eye appealing throttle assembly off to the side? There is a new fix for that eyesore. There is either chrome or gloss black stylish cover to help hide all of that technology. Also released is a new billet cam support plate with high volume oil pump for the 96” and 103” motors. This kit increases oil supply 16% and scavenging by 29% over the OE oil pump. With all the great products HDMC came out with this year I only touched on a handful. I hope most of you have made it into the shop or into your local Harley dealer to check out these new products. Remember to ride often, ride smart and ride safe! Tony Darveau www.thunderroadsiowa.com oadsiowa com

99 Counties on the Wall 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 82 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each and every one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will feature a different county, and new things to go see, and hopefully spark a little touring curiosity for our own state. Cerro Gordo County This month’s selection is located in the second tier of counties from the north and almost centrally located across the state from the east to the west. Originally, this county was a part of Fayette County. Lime, Willow Creeks, and Shell Rock River affect drainage in the north and east part of the county, while a number of small streams drain the south and west into the Cedar River. The county Cerro Gordo named after the Battle of Cerro Gordo that took place during the Mexican War. The Mexicans did have the numbers and the stronger defensive position. General Winfield Scott of the United States defeated General Santa Ana of the Mexican army on April 18, 1847. The 12,000 men who fought on the opposing side outnumbered the American troops of 8,500 strong. I, tt, am always amazed and proud of our American ancestors for creating victories from the disadvantage point. The battle was significant because it opened the way for the United States to take Mexico City. During the battle, America lost sixty-three soldiers with 431 wounded this is pale compared to the 1,130 to 1,700 Mexican soldiers that died. The Spanish translation of Cerro Gordo is “fat hill.”

crashed five miles north of Clear Lake killing all including the pilot. Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane, Holly jokingly told Jennings, “I hope your ol’ bus freezes up!” Jennings shot back facetiously, “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes!” A statement would haunt Jennings for decades. Since 1979 Clear Lake in February has been a gathering point to remember and celebrate the revolutionary styles of these performers. The plane crash site features a steel guitar and set of three stainless steel records. Their music was very influential to many past and present artists. To name some are The Rollin Stones, Bob Dylan, and even Bruce Springsteen has said, “I play Buddy Holly every night before I go on; that keeps me honest.” Clear Lake does feature a lake with all of the water sports available. Fort Custer Maze, built like a “real” western fort, including a lookout tower and four corner blockhouses that spans two acres with two miles of trails. The maze design changes weekly throughout the summer. Looks to be only open until Labor Day so save this one for next summer. Maybe I could meet you there. ; )

Among the towns of Cerro Gordo County is Clear Lake, which has some The Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel was interesting stories. Only 180 of these were voters; all were poverty-stricken ones at that. In July 1861, six very night. Due to bus breakdowns and the heater not working most of the time Buddy Holly chartered volunteers lined up on Main Street then left for war, an airplane to their next location. The three boarded amid tears. In the first two years, the quota for the county was 69 men. as time went on, additional enlistments brought the total to 125 men. Of these, 24 never returned. From the beginning almost, prohibition had a strong following in this county. In 1882, prohibition was up for a vote. The total numbers of voters totaled 845. Votes returned for prohibition was 811, this was not far from unanimous. Cerro Gordo County has a number of claims to worldwide fame. The inception and development of the farmers’ co-operative has distinguished the county from others. The movement has probably been more thoroughly worked out locally here than elsewhere in the United States, starting with the farmers’ co-operative society at Rockwell which claimed nationwide attention in a day when the word co-operation was scarcely understood. Road building is another realm of activity in which Cerro Gordo pioneered. The first mile of rural road paved in Iowa was on the Clear Lake road. One mile built in 1913 has grown to nearly 50 miles. In 1918, Mason City established the first Junior College in the state. Carrie Lane Chapman Catt was an international figure in the cause of Equal Suffrage for Women. Early in her career, she was one of the first teachers and later the principal of the Mason City Schools. Cerro Gordo County has much to offer for the tourist. You definitely could fill a day or even a week’s worth of activities learning the history and enjoying the sites. Our tour actually began with some excellent food and service from the O.P. aka The Other Place. OP is definitely a biker friendly place that has a wait staff that takes the time to go the extra mile for the patrons. Sources available upon request. tt

Davenport Iowa on Labor Day weekend Davenport, means one thing, Heaven! Yep for any antique motorcycle guru, it’s a weekend full of pure Heaven at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds on the west side of town. The event doesn’t officially start until Thursday, but vendors start rolling in on Wednesday to set up for the world’s largest antique motorcycle swap meet. The meet is full of very early motorcycle parts, and I’m talking early as in teens era belt drives, on up to Shovel era projects.

Nate Ullrich (www.natanic.com) motorcycle races held on Friday night. The races really are the highlight of the weekend, with early board track racers stealing the show, but the roar of a couple dozen TT bikes screaming around the half-mile Davenport Speedway is a welcome rush too!

Anyway, that started us talking of our various experiences at the rallies, where we were in life and how those things fit in with the past, what we’ve done, and how that affects us now. It kinda comes down to, you have to play the hand you’re dealt. God has a way of using our experiences, good or bad, to help others that may be in similar situations. If we have the right attitude, we play that hand to the best of our abilities and those experiences develop character and faith. If we don’t, we often miss opportunities and have regrets and suffer the consequences. Karla’s comment on the subject was that the rope that the devil meant to hang us with, God turns into a life line that we then throw out to others who are going through similar circumstances. MILITARY RIDERS

This month we bring you Jason L. Skoland from Cylinder, Iowa. He is an Army man, still serving in the Army National Guard. He has attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and has served for eight years, and still active. His primary duties are as a Signal Corps Officer. His service history includes being activated and served in 2005 for Operation Enduring Freedom. He credits much of who he is today, to a major influence of Military service in his family and of himself.

Jason has never been without bikes since his first, a 2006 Sportster. He then moved up to a 1999 Heritage Softail, and now his cool Military themed 2008 Street Glide. His latest ride came out of Okoboji Harley-Davidson after he rode to South Dakota with a friend, and became a little envious of his buddy’s radio and cruise control. That was enough of a push for him, and he upgraded to the Glide. He plans on doing a little bit of engine work to his current bike, mainly because his girlfriend just got herself a 2012 Street Glide, and Jason cannot live with the fact that she has a bigger motor than in his bike. We asked Jason about any big events or rides planned, and he stated that he goes to Algona every year, but unsure on the next big trip. He said he would like to just throw a dart at a map, and where ever it sticks, go there, unless of course it lands in Cylinder, Iowa, then a re-throw will be necessary.

CVMA 39-1 IOWA 3RD ANNUAL PATRIOT RUN RAISES OVER A THOUSAND FOR THE IA VET CENTER

DAVENPORT, IA. - AUG 13, 2010: On August 13 the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association in Iowa (CVMA 39-1) hosted its Annual Patriot Run (APR). This year the CVMA event benefitted the Iowa Veterans Center. After completing the registration process at Fun Mart Cycles the kick stands were up and everyone headed out. The weather was perfect as over 50 bikes rolled to each five stops ending up at Crabby’s Bar and Grill. The night ended with camaraderie as the best and worst hands were announced, and items were raffled and auctioned. All in all the good times raised $1,400 for the Iowa Vet Centers. The CVMA 39-1 is an association of combat veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby. Our mission is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Our focus is to help veteran care facilities provide a warm meal, clothing, shelter, and guidance, or simply to say “Thank You.” and “Welcome Home. “ We sponsor and/or participate in many motorcycle-related charity events each year, and as a non-profit organization, donate to various veteran care facilities and veteran charities. The Iowa Veterans Center goal is to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach, and referral services to eligible veterans in order to help them make a satisfying post-war readjustment to civilian life for the Combat Veteran and/or their family. Contact: Kent High - CVMA 39-1 PR Officer 913.967.9388 - kent.high@gmail.com - www.iacvma.org www.combatvet.org

Jason and his significant other are both members of the Whttemore, Iowa Legion Riders, and have many friends that they ride with regularly. They both love to ride, and do so whenever they get a chance. Jason had to head out for duty in September. He will be stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia until January. He joked that he is not happy about his SO being able to put on miles while he is gone. Maybe he should get his bike down there with him to ride while free? I bet we could find someone willing to ride it down for him! If you see Jason out and about on his Military inspired green Street Glide, give him a nice Veterans wave, and if you get a chance, shake his hand and thank him for his service. Ride Free Thanks to our Military! www.thunderroadsiowa.com

Pour as much of the white Fettucini sauce all over, inside and around. Coat them very well. Sprinkle with parsley and bake on 350 for apprx. 30 minutes. Turn broiler on if the top does not have the desired brown & bubbley that you want. But keep a close eye on it.....only takes seconds under the broiler. Serve with some crusty Italian bread and some soft basil butter. These are incredible!

day trips with Doc Greetings Brothers and Sisters, and another month is gone, with only a couple more suitable for riding! Unbelievable that the summer has Marched its way to September, I guess it’s like they say “Time sure flies when you’re” having fun”! Now you tell me, looking back…Has it been? And have you had? If not then, why did you even get out of bed? I have discovered that if a body is bored, then you’re doing something wrong! There is just way too much happening out there to say you can’t find anything to do, or anyplace to go! I finally got in touch with the “Beer Lady” from Van Buren County, she confirmed what I had heard about their County, and we set up a ride, which also was the rain date for their annual bike show and poker ride, fund raiser. I put it out there if “Anybody” would like to ride with, and to meet me at the filling station @ 7:00am that Saturday morning! Well true to her usual, Mother Nature thought it would be funny to unleash another one of her tirades, and it was raining when I got up! (Never cuss Mother Nature, never cuss Mother Nature) Nobody had the will to be at the meeting point and I don’t blame them, getting rained on all the time gets old, and makes you look that way too! So I had the scooter packed and ready to go, and did just that, Buh- bye!!

judging! And after a good stretch and some howdy do’s we got on with it!

All makes and models are welcome in the show, and there were many. Not all were represented but there was a good choice between foreign and domestic bikes, but my attention was turned to a little battery powered unit that had been entered by a youngster, by my guess it was a replica of a Flathead, Dad had rewired and Junior had painted it! I was impressed by it! As a matter of fact we voted it #1 in the kids division, now, there was another entry, a scooter and powered by a battery also, but you could tell that Junior did the painting on the replica just by looking at it! In the trike category, two entered, one was a fine work of machine and paint, and the other was clearly a master-piece of hand built by time, love and whatever the owner could put together to make the body and deck, and I believe the controls were built in the garage custom! A couple of customs with cool paint jobs were there, along with a few stock bikes and an old shovel head set out from the rest! A factory vintage Yamaha, looked like it gets packed in bubble wrap, was gleaming in the sun when it hit me, it went from 58 degrees to 95 in a hurry and I was dry. Dry as a pan of brownies cooked by a 12 year old for the first time, the Sahara desert I met up with my one ride mate, Andy aka Banjo who is a of dry, and it was time…………..Continued until next seasoned rider and loves to ride about as much as I do! So month cause I have a mean we took off for Bonaparte, going south to get out of the rain Editor who won’t give me and then east till we hit it again, and followed that course the space…lol! Till the and plan until we came out of the rain and was able to tanks run out of gas…Doc shuck our leathers, and stand in the sunshine, nice and warm, but still damp from earlier! Lovillia was a good way I’m still waiting to hear from Bonaparte, and we were running late as it was, so we about your favorite rides took off kicking gears, and enjoyed ourselves, for the rest of The roads you like to the ride. Thunder down And the good folks you This part of Iowa has some different scenery; I noticed meet along the way fewer crops in the field and more natural vegetation! Thick and rich timberlands, with streams winding through them, Drop me an e-mail or give Southeast of Knoxville! It was very interesting to see all me a call @ Poppa45doc@ the little towns, some of which were no bigger than a few yahoo.com houses and a cemetery, others were shacks and a gas station, 515-975-3893 Pulaski was one of them, and thank God they had a Sinclair. We were only 30 to 40 minutes away from Bonaparte; we were running short on fuel! After learning a lesson in what keeps an internal combustion engine moving, I was a little concerned until I spied the Sinclair station…I was relieved, for these little mom and pop shops are the only thing that can keep us moving sometimes, AND they seem to have everything in them! Fuel, food, and fuses! Drinks, smokes and gum! Bungees to replace the ones ya lost or broke, and even a cool novelty item, every now and then! After fueling up, I contacted Linda to let her know we were closing in, and then we pegged up for the last leg of the ride!

As we crossed the bridge going into Bonaparte, my first thought was “A perfect place and setting for a Cowboy movie, except for the cars and trucks sitting around but the street front told the story, and then the bikes, Not a lot of them in the show, but again this was the rain date, so here we are! Top Ten Reasons Why Trick-or-Treating is Better Than Sex A ragged, old, biker shuffled into a down and dirty bar. Stinking of whiskey and cigarettes, his hands shook as he took the “Piano Player Wanted” sign from the window and handed it to the bartender. “I’d like to apply for the job,” he said. “I ride an old shovel head and have been repairing them babies for years until the shop I was working at decided to replace me with a youngster straight out of some damn pup wet behind the ears. I learned to play the piano at an old biker bar near the shop, so here I am.” The barkeep wasn’t too sure about this doubtful looking old guy, but it had been quite a while since he had a piano player and business was falling off. So, why not give him a try. The seedy biker staggered his way over to the piano while several patrons snickered. By the time he was into his third bar of music, every voice was silenced. What followed was a rhapsody of soaring music unlike anything heard in the bar before. When he finished there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. The bartender took the old biker a beer and asked him the name of the song he had just played? It’s called “Drop your Skivvies, Baby, I’m Going Balls To The Wall For You” he said. After a long pull from the beer, leaving it empty, he said “I wrote it myself.” The bartender and the crowd winced at the title, but the piano player just went on into a knee-slapping, hand-clapping bit of ragtime that had the place jumping. After he finished, the biker and also ex fighter pilot acknowledged the applause, downed a second proffered mug of ice cold beer, and told the crowd the song was called, “Big Boobs Make My Afterburner Light.” He then launched into another mesmerizing song and everyone in the room was enthralled. He announced that it was the latest rendition of his song, “Spread ‘em Baby, It’s Foggy Out Tonight and I Need To See The Centerline”, excused himself and headed for the john. When he came out the bartender went over to him and said, “Hey biker, the job is yours, but do you know your fly is open and your pecker is hanging out? “Know it?” yelped the old biker, “Hell, I wrote it!”

Part of that process was so much more than just being a passenger, because these boys were in class, and learning When first becoming interested in motorcycles, I was about riding the entire time. the lone wolf type of person in my family. I started my appreciation for the machines at an early teenage time, but This set the stage for them to start to branch out on their did not have the benefit of any family members or even close friends that rode. It seems that Jen and Jason have This was all fine and dandy, instilled a respect and love of riding that will probably last until the day came for each a lifetime. One of the biggest points of excitement for the boys this summer has been the family trip to Sturgis. They of the boys that they were each rode their own, and logged over 2,000 miles a piece tired of riding “bitch.” on the trip. This also gave them the opportunity to ride the most miles in a day for each of them, which was upwards of 350 miles. They shared many of their adventures from the Rally, but overall the riding, scenery, and fun on the curves were their most favorite part. They did have a couple of narrow escapes in South Dakota, but all ended fine, and Jen can breathe again. She is a rider as well and understands the dangers of two wheels, but is also a mom first, and is naturally worried about her boys.

Bikers of Tomorrow!

The young men were asked if they cared to share any recommendations for other new riders, Tyler stated, “Make sure you know what you are getting into, and watch out for others” and Chase added, “Be vigilant and watch out for everything.” Sounds like mom and dad have started them on the right path. The future bikers like these boys seem to have it together. They were a pleasure to ride and chat with. Ride Safe! Vernon 32 - TRMI OCTOBER 2011

Coalition of Independent Riders: Are you a 5%’er? First, a little history; in 1924 the American Motorcycle Association was founded and mainly supported by the motorcycle manufacturers to promote riding motorcycles. They sanctioned groups of riders who rode together as being “clubs”. Some wore complete matching outfits and the AMA even gave awards for the best-dressed clubs. In 1947 the AMA had an article in their magazine stating that 99% of their members are law-abiding citizens and only 1% are “outlaws”; this was the beginning of what we know today as the 1%’ers. Today it is widely believed that about 5% of the riding-public are members of so-called rights organizations. In other words, those of us who work to stay informed and labor to inform others. As well as call, e-mail, and/or write to our elected officials. This, to me is a startling statistic. While 19 out of 20 are satisfied to complain to their friends or coworkers they are, for some reason, afraid to do the work. Why is that? The U.S. Constitution gives “we the people” ownership of this country. With this comes the responsibility to fight to make sure that our liberties and rights are never trampled upon by politicians and bureaucrats. This great experiment of self-government known as The United States of America has been under attack either from outside or within, since its founding. It is only because of the 5% that we still have the freedoms and liberties we enjoy. I wasn’t always so adamant and patriotic in my beliefs. Seven years ago my wife gave birth to my first son and I cannot bear the thought of him growing up in a different country than I did. It’s time to get off the couch and be counted. Do you know your state senator and representative’s name? Better yet, do they know you? If not, how can you be comfortable with the idea of them making decisions that affect your life, your money, your kids’ education, etc? When you get to the federal level the challenge is more difficult, but since 95% of the people are too lazy or “busy” to do their civic duty a few speaking as one can have a very loud voice. As members of the Coalition of Independent Riders (U.S. Defenders/C.O.I.R.) we do our best to stay on top of what’s going on and act when necessary. What is it that we defend? We defend the U.S. Constitution and our right to do what we want to, as long as we’re not stepping on other people’s rights. We’re all about making sure that our elected officials remember who they are working for. Don’t be scared or intimidated, remember these people in the “government” work for us. The only power they have is the power we give them. Over the last number of years, many have forgotten this fact. It’s all of our job to remind them. Not sure how? I’ll be glad to show you the way! Join me, as a liberty defending freedom fighting 5%’er. Send me an e-mail and I’ll gladly show you how. peter@riderpromotions.com “Take the mirror test. From the Woman’s Seat

The Proposal was in Sturgis of 2010. Jordan’s first time to the rally and she could hardly wait to experience it. They rolled into Rapid City, SD on Wednesday August Fourth for their first night. Riding to Rushmore was her first taste of riding in the Black Hills after dark. BRRR! Take a jacket. Clint told her later that he considered proposing while at Mt. Thursday August Fifth they rolled into STURGIS, set up camp and then went downtown to have a few beers and From the Woman’s Seat this month is about a young woman check out the sights. ANAMOSA HILL CLIMBS It’s takes pure determination to launch a motorcycle up a 160 foot, near vertical, grassy hill. But for over the past 30 years, that’s what hundreds of motorcyclists have been doing in Anamosa, IA. On Sunday, September 11, 2011, approximately 50 hillclimb enthusiasts were on hand to put their bikes and their reputations to the test. As riders came into the pit area, some with a bike or two in the back of a pickup, others with a trailer sporting their names or a business, they stopped to register. Classes for the day were as follows: 600 4-Stroke; 600 Novice; 600 Expert; 750 Novice; 750 Expert; Open Class; 850-CC; and Exhibition. While most of the riders were only entering one class, there were a few who had brought two bikes with them and competed in more than one class. Jason Kersey, of Huxley, IA, was one such rider. Jason was competing with a Suzuki GSXR 600 and a Yamaha XS 750. A veteran who has been competing for 8-9 years, he travels to Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin and Utah. He is fortunate to have some timber available to practice on, though most riders don’t practice between competitions. Jason noted that his favorite competition is the Widowmaker Hillclimb that is held near Coalville, UT. Rider Kyle Jacobs, from West Liberty, IA, has only 5 years of hillclimb experience under his belt. His bike of choice is a Honda 6RF 450. So far, Jacobs has only raced in Iowa and Illinois, but hopes to attend more venues in the future. Veteran rider, Mike See, of Muscatine, IA, has been racing for 12 years and has taken 3rd place at Nationals twice. He competes in approximately 7 hillclimbs a year, traveling to Illinois, Minnesota, and other Iowa locations. Despite many broken bones caused by accidents, Mike continues to ride.

the past 6 years. He estimated that he has made it over the top of the hill 3 or 4 times, on his Honda 450. The two of them compete in hillclimbs in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Matt’s ability to score a fast time has taken him to Nationals every year. A crowd favorite at this event was tthe Exhibition class where young rriders got to show off their riding a ability. Six young riders, between tthe ages of 9 and 14 took on the h hill just like the “big boys”. These rriders, wearing mini-versions of tthe gear, did their best to make it u up the hill. For one young rider, D Dalton, it was about beating his la last score. Dalton, a 9 year old ffrom Muscatine, was anxious to b beat his last score of 32 feet. This w was his 3rd race of the season and this is the first year he has been racing. He put his 90cc Yamaha to the test and managed to beat that number by making it to 41 feet. Another crowd favorite was the only female rider in this class, 9 year old Emily Schultz. The course for this season’s ride seemed to be an “easier” course than the one used in June. With fewer obstacles during the first few feet, riders were able to accelerate up the hill quickly. Once past the rough terrain that riddled the last few feet of the course, riders were able to make it over the top. This event then came down to speed. It would be the clock that determined who took home the win at this race. In addition to the race, vendors are available who have bike accessories, parts, and t-shirts for sale. Food is also available on the grounds. Bring your own seating if you plan to attend this event. A swap meet is held in conjunction with this event and starts at 10:00 in the morning. The hillclimb begins at noon. Parking is available on and near the grounds and an admission fee is charged. Special thanks to Wade Schultz and his fearless crew for making this a well-run, wellattended event. Susan Mast

Many of the riders I spoke with told me that they began riding motorcycles at a very early age, one as young as 3 years old. Mike Kopetko, from Benton, WI, was one such rider. Starting at age 4 on a 50cc bike, he now races a 450 Honda. When I asked him why he competed in hill climbs he told me that it was for the adrenaline rush. “It’s so scary its fun!” he shared. In 2010, Mike finished 2nd place in the Anamosa September event. Racing seems to run in the family, I learned. The support shown to these riders is evident by the “crew”, who are on hand to help out at these events. One such family is the Altfillisch brothers from Elizabeth, IL. Matt and Chad. Matt told me that he started racing dirt bikes at a young age and has been competing for www.thunderroadsiowa.com
