Keep riding them as long as you can. Fall is upon us and the summer riding season is gone. When riding this time of year, be even more cautious as the normal hazards seem worse, plus we have some new seasonal hazards that we need to watch for. Slow moving farm machinery can be found on the road ways, as well as blowing debris from combines and pickers. On top of that, there can be some major debris on the roadways if it has been wet at all and is drug out on the roads by farm equipment. Also, the animals seem to be running, namely the DeerNR herd that are running around more, and being incredibly stupid and horny. Usually the peak of the rut is late October and into November, so watch out for them. Don’t let the sun go down on you when riding this time of year without proper gear. It seems to take a lot longer to get used to shorter days at the end of the season than the longer days at the beginning. Enjoy the awesome fall riding temperatures, but be safe and get home to ride another day. At the time of writing this, we just finished up with the Tall Corn Run for 2017 with the Grand Prize Drawing at Big Barn on September 9th. The program was a success and I think everyone that participated had a great time getting out and about to the Check In Spots. Some Check In spots were great, some were good, and a couple had less than exciting response. We saw that it was directly proportional for the activity at a spot and how much excitement they generated for the program. It is a joint effort between TRMI and the sponsors, and everyone needed to play their part. As the Tall Corn Run for this year is over, don’t forget that those cards do not expire! Keep it in your wallet, purse, saddlebag, or where ever you know it will be safe, as we will be doing another program
next year. Once you are registered for a card, the number stays with you, so keep a hold of it. For 2018 we want to change it up a little bit, and always welcome sponsors and riders’ opinions. Let us know what you would like to see different for next year. Let us know how it could be better or what direction we should take the program. If you have ideas for monthly prizes or for end of the year prizes, let us know. Nothing ever stays the same; it either gets better or gets worse. Help us make the Tall Corn Run better for 2018. CMA Notes
A few weeks back Mark and I were out riding a curvy two-lane road that was lined with rocky cliffs and pretty little valleys. The day was sunny and cool and we were tooling along fairly close to the speed limit when a rider whose mother had never taught him that patience is a virtue came roaring up behind us. He couldn’t even wait for a straight section of road to pass on, but just blasted right by Mark on a tight corner. I’m pretty sure I was gritting my teeth hard enough to flake off some enamel. I want to see people go to heaven, but preferably not right in front of me. Plus, if he had lost control coming back into our lane, we would have been intimately involved in his stupidity because we would not have been able to stop before smashing into him. The laws of physics make that pretty clear. According to one test, the best- case scenario for stopping a bike equipped with ABS brakes and going 60 mph is 3.77 seconds, during which time the bike travels 193.05 feet. That’s the best-case scenario. It has nothing to do with a person’s reflexes or how experienced they are at riding. It’s just the way things are. Knowing that, I’ve spent some time reading books on riding technique and watching videos on riding technique and practicing riding technique. Respecting and understanding the laws of physics enabled me to learn what I can do, not just what I can’t do. So far, the knowledge and practice has helped me to avoid causing major damage to myself or others. However, I will never hone my skills and improve my reflexes to the extent that I will be able ignore the laws of physics. As long as I live, physics will rule my existence. With that in mind, it’s my goal to be “the one who rides well”, not “the one who died in a needless accident”. Another thing in life that can’t be overcome is our inability to live perfect lives. It used to frustrate me to no end to find myself walking right back into old habits –in fact, I became frustrated to the point that I finally gave up even trying to “live right” and went completely back to my drinking and partying. Not only was I unable to be perfect, I couldn’t even manage “legal”. It took being completely down and out and basically sleeping in my car to make me realize that perfection was the least of my worries. Through some friends I came to understand that God already knew I couldn’t be perfect but that he still loved me and had the situation under control.

Something in me says, “No thanks – I have this covered.” It took a lot of swallowing down my pride to acknowledge that I would never be able to live a perfect life and that it was ok because Jesus already had done that for me. This verse from the book of Romans really stuck in my head: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Talk about a light bulb going off in my head! Instead of feeling like I had to slink off in shame when I failed again, I could go back to God and he would not reject me! Embracing that truth took me to the next step in my relationship with the Lord, which was to grow toward something instead of running away from something. First John states that if we confess our sins to God, he will not just forgive our sins but will cleanse us from all wickedness. I was amazed to find that when I kept taking my failures to the Lord and practiced doing what these verses said, I found myself less and less inclined toward doing wrong and more inclined toward doing right. Instead of being derailed by what I couldn’t do, I began practicing what I could do. I still use these verses daily to make sure that in my failures l turn toward God for his grace instead of using my failures as a weapon against myself. It doesn’t mean I am able to be perfect, because as long as I am alive I will be subject to the temptation to sin, but my sins no longer have the power to destroy me or even to define me. I’m no longer “the problem child”, but “the one who knows God’s love”. You have the same opportunity. Just go to Jesus in prayer. Winter Insurance
Well summer has passed and it will not be long before we all decide to tuck our bikes in for the winter. I know a very sad thought!!! So, this month we are going to talk about winter storage.
Here are a few tips on how to prepare your bike for storage. 1.
Top off the tank and add some fuel stabilizer
One question I always get is can we alter coverage for the winter months. The answer is it depends on the company. Some companies will let you remove liability, medical and uninsured as well as underinsured during the winter months. If your company does this it can be a good way to save some money during the winter but how much can you save? I mean most policies for motorcycles don’t cost a lot.

Make sure the rest of your fluids are full
3.
If you have carburetors drain the float bowls
4.
Get rid of the old oil
5.
If your bike has a radiator make sure you check the antifreeze to see it can handle the cold
6.
Place oil on the stationary tubes to help prevent the rubber seals from drying out
7.
Conserve your battery’s charge by using a battery t ender
8.
Tend to your tires. You don’t want to take the bike out on a nice winter day and have tire problems
9.
Give the bike a good cleaning to include some wax. Minimize rust
10.
And of course, pick a good spot for storage so no damage happens
Here is the biggest fear I have. We all know that if the weather is nice during the winter we are going to get our bikes out and ride. If you forget to call and place coverage back on your bike, you have none! There is no grace period or exception. For those who store their bike somewhere else, what happens if for some reason the bike catches fire and burns the storage facility down? I mean most of us use a battery tender, right? Will you have liability coverage? I guess what I am saying, is it really worth removing coverage during the winter to save a few bucks. It can cost you way more in the end.
I hope this helps you with impending dreaded winter months to come. Now get out there and enjoy the fall riding!!!!

99 counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 11 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of curiosity for our state of Iowa.
Van Buren County
businesses are locally owned, and we prefer it this way. What we do have is two State parks that provide great riding. My favorite is Lacy State park, with its large trees shading the roads, which are smooth and well maintained. There are a lot of sweeping curves, and riding
If you have never visited Van Buren County to ride, then you have no clue what you are missing. Van Buren County is located in southeast Iowa, 25 miles west of Ft Madison and the Mississippi river and 95 miles south of Iowa City. The county is intersected by Highways 1 and 2 and has Missouri as the southern neighbor. Over 7,000 folks call the villages and rural areas of Van Buren County home, and the county was named for President Martin Van Buren. The county’s courthouse was built in September 1843 in the style of Greek revival and stands as Iowa’s oldest, and the nation’s second oldest, courthouse in operation.
If you’re looking for four lane roads to ride, busy city streets, or fancy hotels, we might not be the place to visit for you. There is nowhere in the county that has any four lane roadways. We have no big cities, with the largest being the county seat of Keosauqua with around 1,000 people. We have one motel and a p of historic Inns, and couple sev several Bed &Breakfasts or cabins, and WE DON’T H HAVE A WALMART. The only large chain type of store or franchise we have is one Casey’s Ge General Store and one Do Dollar General. All other

in the park provides miles of beautiful scenery. There are many great places to pull over to take pictures or just take in the beautiful scenery. There is camping available for both tents and RVs. The road from Keosauqua over to Bonaparte is county J40 and is one of the locals’ favorites to ride or drive. You will go through two historic towns along the Des Moines River, Bentonsport and Bonaparte and both are chock full of great little antique shops. Bonaparte is also home to the only restaurant built in the building that housed an old grist mill and has great food and unique architecture. Another one of those hidden little places you might miss is AJ’s Bar and Grill in Mt Sterling. Also known

as Dog Town, Mt Sterling is located four miles south of Highway 1 and 2 junctions, and is literally a stone’s throw from the Missouri border. AJ’s is home of the biggest tenderloin in SE Iowa, and you can make at least four sandwiches out of just one tenderloin. If you’re looking for the best ice cream, bar none, that’s at Misty’s right off the bridge in Keosauqua. The food there is great, and there will almost always be a bike or two parked there. We have a large Mennonite community in the small burb of Cantril, this is home of the famous Dutchmen Store. The
AJ’s Bar & Grill Linda gave us some great ideas for visiting Van Buren County, but I wanted to get some more information and photos of the area, so I took her advice and headed for AJ’s Bar & Grill in Mt Sterling. As I pulled up on in the parking area, and old graybeard that was crossing the street advised that where I parked the motorcycle was fresh asphalt and if it got too warm, the kickstand may sink in. There were a couple of trikes parked there already, but they don’t have to worry about the kickstand sinking into the fresh pavement. After chatting for a bit with him and moving the bike, I introduced myself to the guy, and his name was Tim. He happened to be the owner of the place, and thanked me for coming to visit his little burg. I asked if he rode and we walked across the street to his garage to show me a couple of his motorcycles. He had other business to attend to, so he shook my hand and said he hoped that I enjoyed my food, and to make sure and let him know if I needed anything while in the area.
I went inside and had a seat at the end of the bar and was looking south through the window at the valley in front of us and the adjoining hill. I asked one of the locals sitting next to me how far we were from Missouri, and he leaned forward and said in a thick southern accent, “ya see that hill there? That is Missoura”. We continued to chat, and some other locals joined in on the conversation and offered some other cool stuff in Van Buren County, but I was here for the tenderloin! I was advised to get a ½ loin, as the full was way too big for one person. I got that and some pepper jack cheese bites. The service was quick and friendly and before I knew it my meal had arrived. Even the ½ was huge, and I could have actually used three or four more buns. The pork was very tender, juicy but perfectly cooked, with a very light breading. I sat there and enjoyed my meal with some company from the locals and enjoyed the rustic décor of the place. I figured I better get moving to see some more of the county, but not before HIGHLY recommending this place that is off the beaten path but well worth the trip! Vernon

locals know to NOT go on Saturday as it is like Walmart on Black Friday. Here they have the best prices around on bulk foods, meat, yard goods, and about anything you may need. We are also home to a large Amish population all over the county. You will see hitching rails everywhere. Please watch for the buggies. Also watch for the DNR’s deer, we don’t like them and they are everywhere.
Everyone seems to be riding in and around Van Buren County, except the undertaker. A few other things you won’t find here are traffic jams like in any cities. Traffic here is mainly made up of tractors or Amish buggies, and you need to WATCH FOR BOTH. There are no stop lights in Van Buren County, NOT ONE. Another thing we don’t have much of is crime. We have one of the lowest crime rates in the state of Iowa.
You will find you can walk into any bar or restaurant dressed in leather and nobody seems to notice. You might get asked “where ya from” and “where ya heading”, simply because the folks here are friendly that way. You might also notice a lot of bikes riding and parked around the county. Van Buren County has seen a large increase in motorcycle registrations since early 90’s, about a 95% increase. We notice people in general are riding now including doctors, a couple of lawyers, a couple of judges, our local Pharmacist, bankers, teachers, business owners, cops, firefighters, a couple of local Mayors and postal workers.

We do have our own motorcycle rally held every year at the Van Buren County Fair Grounds. Keosauqua is the home of The End of Summer Rally, presented by Stateline Rally Association. This takes place the 2nd weekend after Labor Day. When the bikers come to town every little old lady sits on their porch to wave. So if you’re looking for a great place to ride, for awesome local people to interact with, and great food, then this is where you want to come and visit. Iowa is a small state when you look at the big picture. There are many more miles of concrete across South Dakota, Nebraska, the depths of Missouri or the liquid filled land mass to the north of us with the land of the lakes. Look, Minnesota has 7,326 square MILES of land covered by water, Iowa? 401 square miles. Iowa is only 301 miles LONG, anybody that has ever cracked a throttle leaving Sioux Falls, SD towards Rapid City across the Mt Rushmore State knows it’s a good 350 miles, granted, some of those miles are great to run, but many times it feels more like 500 miles by comparison, the Hawkeye state is small. Or at least on a map it looks that way. But, stats aside, it’s a very different “small” state in many, many ways. Not just from a sense of ideology or political beliefs; clearly Eastern parts of Iowa lean one direction and Northwest Iowa leans the complete opposite, but in our habits when it comes cultural habits too. What is a tradition in one part of the state can be off the radar in another. Here is a perfect example. A Leaf Run. Growing up in Northwest Iowa, cutting my teeth on the highways, by-ways and black tops of the NW corner of the state, you traveled by fields of golden corn, soybeans and the smell of the harvest. My travels across the Midwest offered much of the same, and even when I settled in Southwest Iowa, the riding featured more curves and hills, but much of the same late in the season; corn, beans, great sunshine from time to time, oversized farm equipment appearing suddenly on the road. (Never bitch about farm equipment, America Needs Farmers) The similarities over the years were cool roads which made a scenic view, road side joint or more. A few years back, my buddy Timmy made contact with an old college roommate the same way we all find people we use to know, Facebook. During a ride for wings one evening, he mentions this to me and how his old buddy lived in Eastern Iowa, was a rider and invited him to come out for a weekend. The offer was extended to me to join him for the adventure, so plans were set. An early October road trip was coming up and it was time for one last adventure before the bottom usually falls out of the mercury. October is just that transition month, many times, the first week or so of the month and the weather is perfect for riding, just in that sweet spot, towards the end of the month, all bets are off. We packed for a great ride, forecasted temps all across the state were sunny near 80 and the weather didn’t let us down. We dead headed out of Council Bluffs and bee lined to Des Moines via I-29 on a Friday afternoon. Hitting town prior to
rush hour we then snaked our way on back roads to Cedar Rapids, home of Tim’s college buddy. We hit town just about dusk and got to the hotel where we were met with a biker friendly attendant, offering advice on food and refreshments and even the best spots to park our bikes for the most protection overnight. The hotel desk clerk even mentioned they provided rags to wipe the bikes down, should we need them in the morning. Then, he asked, “Are you here for a leaf run?” Not wanting to appear to be even less educated, we both just said, “No, here to meet some friends.” Later that night, over some wings at another biker friendly joint, a poster listed several leaf runs and where to get a map. Leaf run? What the hell is a leaf run! We had never heard of a damn leaf run and it seemed the most out of this world concept. So, yea we are idiots, and took a while to figure it out. Saturday, while at a Hawkeye tailgate party (they were playing Penn State that day) we talked leaf runs with several bikers and thankfully, they didn’t look down on our uncultured nature. What a great idea! Ride the great roads of Eastern Iowa and enjoy the canopy of colors October brings forward and what better way to do that but via a bike. Thankfully, my wife brought along her good camera so she could capture some of the pure beauty we enjoyed later that day. We even learned that there is such a thing as “leaf run leaders” that take groups out, bars/restaurants that cater to “leafers” and several maps with great roads are plentiful. It was a fun, quick and educational weekend for sure, Tim got to hang out with his college buddy/roommate, we hung out with some great local bikers, had some killer wings, found a biker friendly hotel and came home knowing that we would need to return for one of “them leaf runs”. We took the lazy, long way home on a Sunday afternoon, with ample sunshine and perfect riding weather, one of those days when before you know it, you are there, even if you’re not in a hurry. I’ve often wondered how come these types of runs are more promoted in other parts of the state, like the great job Eastern Iowa does with these leaf runs, then I remember, duh, not enough leaves would be the best guess. Get on your bike, make your own leaf run before the weather forces the bike away for the year, and remember, life is short, stop putting off fun. While Iowa might be considered a small state with many different points of views, it was a great weekend for a couple of “Western Iowa” folks to hang out with our brothers and sister in Eastern Iowa and find a common bond. This month we had the opportunity to spend some time chatting with a friend who is near and dear to our hearts, and who also happens to be a bit of a legend in the motorcycle world. He hails from Sioux Rapids and spent some time in his youth serving in the U.S. Army; during a time that our nation was deeply entrenched in the Vietnam War. While Charlie “Chopper” Gilmore is known throughout the motorcycle world for the amazing machines he builds and restores, he is known to us as the best kind of friend anyone could hope to have. Scurrying into Chopper’s garage on a rainy Saturday morning, we were greeted by smiles and hugs from both Charlie and his beautiful bride Toni. I had to spend some time looking at all of the amazing artifacts that one collects via nearly 60 years on two wheels, and they were gracious enough to share many memories associated with those cherished mementos. But as the Gilmore’s had obligations to the Shayla Bee event later that evening, I had to be reigned back in and focus on the task at hand…getting to the bottom of this motorcycle guru’s military history. Charlie’s first look at the military life came in the form of ROTC in college. He studied hard, and as part of his coursework he took some law classes. Fast 30 - TRMI OCTOBER 2017
forward and he completed his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas. Life kept on moving, and the Vietnam War was ever present in the daily lives of Americans…some more than others, I am sure. Well, in 1970 Charlie was present when the question was posed if anyone had any law background…. before he knew it, thanks to some of those college courses, Charlie had landed himself a job as the Prosecuting Attorney at Fort Benning. Chopper fought for his country, and his platoon…his brothers in arms. Chopper helped out a few of his best brothers, and then left Vietnam for home in November of 1971…and we are damn glad he made it back.
into Sturgis! I asked him how many years he thought he would go to Sturgis, and his answer was simple, “til I go and have fun”…followed by a twinkle in his eye that tells me he probably has waaaay to much fun there every single year!
Once home, he had a lot of work to do, many projects to resume. You see, Charlie had developed a love of two wheels at a very young age. When I asked him if he had ever been without bikes, and he replied “I think when I was born”. Charlie got his first bike when he was 16, a Triumph that he bought from his Uncle’s shop, and he never looked back. Of course he put projects on hold over the years, set things aside for later…making sure that Toni and their family had everything they needed, but his love for antique bikes has kept him always searching for the next cool project. Projects that he jokes are “40 year” endeavors, but worth it just the same. We are pretty sure that Chopper has either ridden or owned damn near every motorcycle ever produced, and as he says, “the rarer the better”.
Chopper has ridden in more places than anyone I know, even in Europe. But he says the coolest place he ever rode was in 2001 when he and Toni took 27 days to ride to Alaska…even though it rained for 21 of those days and the road department apparently hired idiots, thanks to the amazing scenery (and Toni’s company) it remains his favorite trip to date. This riding season is slowly coming to a close, but he still plans on attending several swap meets looking for rusty gems he can use on his ongoing projects. And of course as soon as the snow clears in the spring he will be back out on two wheels ripping up roads from here to Alaska.
Besides his involvement with the Shayla Bee Foundation, Chopper also has ties to the VFW, Legion, and Disabled Vets in his area. Recently, he hosted the Omaha Chapter AMCA road ride in the Okoboji area, and everyone involved had a blast. As you can imagine, Chopper has met many people in his riding career and as a result most of his friends ride, and he spends a lot of time tearing up pavement himself. He has gone to Sturgis every year (except maybe one) since 1965, when he rode a triumph up to what was supposed to be a “huge” deal with like 1,500 bikes…so he just” had to go”. Chopper was a soldier in the U.S. Army during one of the most difficult times in U.S. history. And though it is now history to us, it remains a part of life for those who lived it. Much respect to Charlie and all who have served, and those who have yet to serve from everyone at TRMI. I was doing time at the Drama Factory last week and overheard a conversation at the water cooler. Ok that’s a lie. I was actually eavesdropping and it wasn’t a water cooler it was a coffee vending machine. Anyway this sweet little good Christian woman was telling a story to her coworker, I only caught a few bits and pieces but I was so intrigued by how emotional she was that I asked her to play it again from the top and it goes like this. Her 21 year old daughter was driving home from college for the weekend. Cruising down the interstate at 80 mph, she came up behind a semi and pulled into the left hand lane to go around it. Immediately after doing so she realized there was a car coming straight at her head on in her lane of traffic. She quickly assessed the situation and realized the right hand lane was not an option because of the semi. Hitting the brakes was not an option because there was traffic behind her also attempting to pass that semi. So she did what any good Christian raised 21 year old girl would do. She said a prayer, closed her eyes and veered onto the shoulder of the road headed for the median at 80 MPH. The head on car continued on their journey straight towards her and nailed her all the way down the right side of the van she was driving. She was spun off the road into the median where she continued to spin in circles for what law enforcement later determined was at least 2 or 3 more times. When she finally opened her eyes, she found a big hairy bearded man covered in tattoos knocking on her window asking her if she was all right. At this point, she was terrified. My sick mind likes to believe her first thought had to be this can’t be what heaven looks likes, I must have went the other way.
The big hairy bearded tattooed man then informed her that the rear end of her van was hanging out into the fast lane of traffic, traffic wasn’t stopping and they needed to get it off the road right now before she gets hit again. The van wouldn’t start so at his command she slipped it into neutral, he then single handedly pushed her and the van into the safety of the median. He then quickly reappeared at her window to assess her condition. Together they determined that although she was an emotional wreck and had been tossed around pretty good, there was no blood, no broken bones and she had survived the impact. The big hairy bearded tattooed man stayed with her until law enforcement arrived; doing his best to keep her calm by reassuring her that she was OK and help was on the way because he had called 911 while running up the interstate toward her van. Shortly after law enforcement arrived to contain the scene the big hairy bearded tattooed man walked back down the interstate about 50 yards where he picked his motorcycle up out of the median. No one is exactly sure where he was at when impact occurred, but the facts remain. He was the first person on the scene and the bike he was riding was laying in the median on its side. For those of us who ride knowing that a bike is in the median of the interstate lying on its side can only be 1 of 3 things. 1. The unsung hero didn’t have a kickstand, or 2. He laid that bike down to avoid impact, or 3. That 21 year old Christian girl prayed for a miracle and she got a biker. The 21 year old college student walked away from the accident with bumps, bruises and a lot of sore muscles. The head on driver and his two passengers all went to jail for being under the influence. The unknown biker, the big hairy bearded tattooed man who never leaves home without unconsciously knowing today could be “the day”, rode on down the road with his angel wings secretly hidden under black leather. Now the mother of this young lady finished the story by saying, “I know bikers have their events to raise money but I always thought that they only did that for their own kind, I had no idea they would help a complete stranger, I know that my daughter had a guardian angel with her that day and he rides a motorcycle.” Shifty LaRue

moment I met him, it was clear I had nothing to worry about. I did feel slightly awkward during my first photo shoot but the awkwardness didn’t last long. I have appeared in the 2016, 2017, and 2018 editions of Natanic’s Pin-Ups Calendar. Every time I’m in front of camera I get a little more confident. Nate is always a trooper at giving me direction and letting me take a beer break when I can’t stand in my heels any longer. With Labor Day having come and gone, it’s that time of year again when a lot of you are winding down and calling it the end of riding season but ABATE isn’t just about riding and we don’t quit just because the so called “riding” g season ends for the year.

ABATE of Iowa and it’s 23 Districts have many different events such as toy runs, casino nights, s, dinner rides, bike rodeo’s,, picnics and camp-outs, hay rides, des, parades, golf tournaments, shoot outs, and even swap meets. Each month each District has a monthly thly meeting and most districts also have some kind of event going on during the month. Events are sometimes on the day of the meeting some are on a different date. As always our meetings and events are open to the public and we welcome anyone who wants to join us to attend. September 9th is this year’s date for the 2017 Remembrance Run. This is a no charge ride to remember our fallen brothers and sisters and after the ride we throw a hog roast/ potluck with live entertainment at ABATE of Iowa’s Freedom Park in Algona Iowa. ABATE stands for -- A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education; September 30th through October 1st is our Bringing back the Brotherhood Camp-out also held at ABATE of Iowa’s Freedom Park in Algona Iowa. This event is held to promote the brother/sisterhood of ABATE and is always a lot of fun as well as a very nice way to relax and see friends we don’t get to see very often as well as meet new friends. ABATE of Iowa - District 15 Toys for Tots Run is coming up soon and I know they would love to have you join them for this awesome event. This year’s date is Sunday, October 1st from 11 AM until 2 PM, and will start at the Wal-Mart located at 3101 West Kimberly in Davenport. Let’s help them out and have a record number of bikes for this event that does so much good for the community. On the education side of things, with school starting back up, our Share the Road Program is in full swing with numbers now looking to surpass last year’s totals for students that we have given the live presentation to. Our Rider Education Program is winding down for the year, with only a couple of classes left before the winter months are upon us. It will also soon be time for our Annual event STEAM held at the Regency Inn Best Western in Marshalltown. Abate of Iowa District 10 Family Picnic August 6th, 2017 was District 10’s annual family picnic at Meredith Park near Plover, Iowa. This annual event is designed to bring the district together for food and fun. We hold this event to encourage the members to bring their children and grandchildren. Many times our events are not geared toward being able to include the kids, so this is a fun way to get them involved. Meredith Park offers a beautiful swimming area, horse shoe pits, and a beautiful playground for the young ones to enjoy. The park also seconds as a campground, and has a small cabin that you can rent. However, this year was a bit cool so no one ventured into the water, but the cooler weather did not put a damper on our fun. We have a delicious pot luck where everyone brings a dish and the district provides burgers. This year the Combat Vets had leftovers from their event at Freedom Park, so they graciously contributed to the picnic as well. We are always thankful to have guests, and this year we were graced with the presence of some members from a nearby district. We encourage anyone interested to please attend any of our events. Harley Tracks: 41,000 miles across Vietnam By: Mike Rinowski
a job out of the country. I returned to Nha Trang a few days later, and still no call. The 2010 Tet Holiday approached, and from my experience it would be unusual to start a project at that time, and that strange sensation rose to the surface with an opportunity; to ride for our fallen veterans in the spirit of freedom across the land they saw last, on a Harley Davidson. How cool was that, I thought!
My free-spirit led me across a land of beauty and welcome. Faith guided me on a ride with a playful vengeance. *** I went to Vietnam for my first time in 2008—to build golf courses. I was a golf course superintendent working Asia for twelve years, when a job offer in Hanoi interrupted other plans. I didn’t expect the ride I would make, nor could I have planned it. In hindsight, the logistics of it are more complex than the rules of golf. I soon met a guy who could import a Harley-Davidson without tax, and with a three year contract I splurged to ride on my days off. Riding in Vietnam was surreal with a 21st Century that overlapped a developing nation, which included the growth of a motorcycle culture. When I met other riders, they told me that nobody rode alone around there, and they warned me. Then one of them told me about a new highway that nobody used because of robberies, scams to fix flat tires, and too few gas stations. I could fix my own tires, and the next Sunday I rode out alone and found that new highway; a fantastic stretch of trail known as the Ho Chi Minh Road. I grabbed a handful of throttle that day, and returned often. Six hundred miles of it cut through mountains and jungle before it reached the Highlands in the south. Few towns and hamlets sat along it, with little to no traffic. Robberies and scams were old stories, and the only place I carried gas was on the Western Branch; 150 miles through remote jungle north of Khe Sanh. Over the years, I laid tracks on every kilometer of the Ho Chi Minh Road.
Before I packed, I got that call and was in Laos within the week. My quest hung almost two years. At one time it was threatened. Yet, coincidence and opportunity became powerful factors in my work, and in my life. Later, an obligation consumed them. *** After the HOG of Saigon’s 3rd Anniversary Party, I rode out on Christmas Eve 2011. I carried the spirits of our fallen veterans to the top of Vietnam and back. The ride took six weeks. Along the way, winter conditions detoured me from the Central Mountains, I partied with the HOG of Hanoi, rode into Mordor, through the Lunar Realm, and on the toughest road I’d ever taken a Harley. The bike had taken a beating, I walked with a limp, and a particular thought nagged at me—I missed something for those who gave all. But what, and where?
I recovered, and when I returned from my Kashmir intermission, I put my work aside and rode with faith back across Vietnam in search of fulfillment. The solitude of mountains and jungle along the Ho Chi Minh Road was a powerful sensation. I considered the tasks and turmoil of combat veterans with more thought than I ever had. Alone My contract crumbled eight months after the bike arrived, on the land many fought and died, and many remained, I but another job was only a road trip away, and that one rode into a realm I could not have imagined. I bonded with soon came to an abrupt halt, too. Between jobs, my joy the spirits of my generation and began to live vicariously rides reached the end of the trail near a town few people for them. I felt a mix of emotions. I was angry for the joys knew about on the southern tip. I dropped my kickstand they didn’t get, and humility, compassion, and helplessness and thought I’d made the ride of my life from one end of came often, but I didn’t want the ride to be a hateful or Vietnam to the other. It was there I felt a strange déjà vusomber affair. I wanted to celebrate for them in the spirit of like sensation; like the adventure had chosen me—and it freedom, so, I rode with a playful vengeance. Many factors wasn’t over.
