CMA Notes
Karla and I have had the opportunity and privilege to ride with a lot of different people and groups over the years. Not just our CMAers but HOG, ABATE, numerous secular groups, many clubs, and yes, even an occasional Winger bunch. There are as many varied styles and levels of experience out there as there are accessories for your bike. Some rides have been pleasurable, some downright scary. Recently one of our trips included some new riders with the accompanying questions, challenges and apprehension. While everyone tries their best, sometimes it works out well but other times, not so much.
Whether we acknowledge it or not we are all trying to find the right rhythm on a spiritual ride. We are told in scripture to emulate Christ, to be like Him, to be followers of God as Jesus did. There are many so-called spiritual teachers, cults or even some churches out there, but if they are not pointing you to Jesus you are not going the right direction. The question is “Who do you want to follow and where are they going”? There are no spiritual Lone Rangers who can go their own way. At some time in life you will have to make a decision, because like it or not we are all on this ride and you can’t just sit this one out. Who you decide to follow will also determine who you will serve and that decision will have eternal consequences. Like Bob Dylan’s song says, “You gotta serve somebody, it may be be the devil or it may be the Lord but you gotta serve somebody”. Times get tough for everyone at different points and we tend to either run to the Lord or away from Him.
One of the things that I get to do is to teach, or maybe facilitate is more accurate, an annual Road Captain class at our State Rally each year. They are told that it works well when you can put that newer rider behind an experienced rider with good habits that they can mimic. Whether it is apex line, speed, communication, destinations, stops or situational awareness, they will learn best by following the best. I think of it as the rhythm of the ride and we know The Bible tells us that Jesus is the way (the route) and that what happens when it’s out of tune. no one comes to the Father (the destination) but through Jesus. [John 14:6] There is one mediator between man and There are many people out there riding that you can follow but if you don’t get safely to the proper destination, God, Jesus. [1 Tim2:5] There is no other name but Jesus by which we must be saved.[ Acts 4:12] It’s all about Him you are following the wrong person. You can’t get to Sturgis by following the group headed to Boston. I thought there was a good example in the sports section of the paper the other day that talked about Roger Federer winning his unprecedented 8th Wimbledon championship. While I’m not a tennis fan, I liked what he had to say about his career. He wasn’t a child tennis prodigy or groomed from early on but he said he was always very aware and watched those champions that went before him. He tried to emulate what they did. Life insurance through work: This is a

This is probably one of the toughest questions. Insurance calculators are always going to give you a large amount. I feel they work in the interest of the insurance company. So, I take them with a grain of salt. Life insurance calculators do help you get thinking about areas you can use life insurance that you may not have considered. 99 counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 12 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of curiosity for our state of Iowa.
Union County Union County lies in southern Iowa and is intersected by Highways 25 and 34. While there are over 12,000 people that call Union County their home, the majority of those actually reside in the county seat of Creston. Union county spans a total of 426 square miles, with only 2 of those being water. We had a little free time on a Sunday and decided to invite some of my family along to see what we do on a county tour. My parents, and my cousin Ben and his daughter Aiden joined us for the ride. It was supposed to be a hot one, so we left bright and early hoping to beat the heat so to speak. We entered Union County in the south west corner near Kent, and in true Family vay-cay style we had to immediately take a detour due to the entrance to Kent being a gravel road. I felt a kinship to Chevy Chase as we one by one circled back around and regrouped to head towards a more biker friendly approach to Union County. We decided that maybe we should take Hwy 34 back towards Creston; since we knew there were paved ways into the county seat. Hwy 34 gave us some nice scenic views along the way, and it was a nice quiet Sunday morning to boot, so the ride was calm and relaxing. Once reaching Creston we first stopped at the Frank Phillips Visitor Center. It’s definitely a cool photo opportunity with the renovated Phillips 66 gas station and period correct gas pumps as a backdrop. The station was originally built in 1931, and was one of the first operating Phillips stations in the state of Iowa. From the station we passed by HiCrest Auto to say hello to Bill Stewart and see what smoking deals he had on various dream cars I would like to take home, Bill and most of his staff are avid riders and readers of TRMI! Then we headed over to another historical treasure, the restored depot. The depot is located at 116 W Adams Street and is on the National Register of Historic Places, signifying Creston’s railroad heritage. Tours of the depot are available, there are more model trains than I have ever seen in one place, and there are still more than 40 trains that pass by each day. Next

we checked out The Union County Historical Village in McKinley Park. The village has 15 buildings to tour and is open weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day. Creston is also home to a manufacturing plant of Bunn Coffee Makers, so if you are in the market for a new brewer and want to buy local, it doesn’t get much more local than this. If you are looking for food or drink, you can find them here, for sure. Casa De Oro if you’re feeling spicy or the Creston Family Restaurant if you are looking for some down home cooking… either one will treat you right. If you cruise down Spencer Street be sure to check out Bones Motorcycle and tell them you saw it in TRMI. In addition to these yearlong attractions, Creston also hosts Party In The Park each June and Hot Air Balloon Days each September, with over 40 balloon race participants, a craft fair, and numerous vendors. A couple of great places to wet your whistle and chat with some local bikers are at Montgomery Street Pub and Sidetracked. Both places are the epitome of friendly, small town biker bars. While there was more than enough happening in Creston to occupy us, we had more stops to make, and a date with Vernon’s long-time friend Denise that we didn’t want to miss, so we jumped back on 34 and headed east towards Afton. The first thing we noticed when hitting the edge of town was that we were hungry…We passed by Up in Smoke BBQ and TJ’s Bar and Grill on our way to our destination of El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant. It was

quickly becoming ridiculously hot (so much for beating the heat), and the splash pad we parked next to looked awful tempting to us all. Aiden, if I was 12 I would have gone ahead and jumped right in, clothes and all….so kudos on being a mature biker chick, where I would have failed miserably! We waited only a few short minutes before Denise arrived. I was anxious to meet this woman who had earned Vernon’s respect and admiration long before I had…”Tedrow” as he lovingly refers to her was everything I could have hoped for from one of the few nurses that my hubby has never wanted to bury six feet under at some point in their relationship. So anyhoo…Tedrow had given us some pointers for the Union county tour, as well as the suggestion for vittles, so I was hoping that she was dead on in this area too. The food was fabulous, and the great company was just the icing on the cake… it was great to finally meet you in person and put a face to all of Vernon’s stories from his EMS days! On another note, in chatting with our waitress, we found that in addition to El Ranchito, her uncle happens to own a previous Will Ride to Eat feature, El Adobe in Audubon… stop by either if given the chance, they won’t disappoint! We spent as long as we could inside chatting before braving the heat again, but eventually we had to leave the air conditioned sanctuary and continue our tour. We cruised to the eastern edge of the county and passed through Thayer before cutting back a bit to take Hwy 169 North to Lorimor. Lorimor is a similar size to our own Kimballton, and has a nice convenience store called the Whistle Stop. Kind of a classic small town catch all with groceries, hot food, and fuel…all in one location. We had nearly exhausted our supply of sunscreen and water at this point, and figured we better make a b-line for home before we either burnt to a crisp or burst into flames, so we zig zagged our way along two lanes back to Kimballton, dropping Aiden and Ben in Audubon on the way by. Everyone seemed to have a good time despite the heat, and Griswold-like adventure mishaps, they even volunteered to go along again! We will see who steps up and wants to join us next time when we head to the south eastern part of the state and cruise around Van Buren County. Freedom Rally 2017 Another summer and another Freedom Rally in the books. This was the 33rd annual ABATE party of the year. This year’s attendance was around 8,500 and that makes for a very large party. It happened to be my second trip to the Algona rally, this year and last. This was my first time being with the magazine, so the experience was a little different. Don’t get me wrong, I was at the first Freedom Rally in Humboldt 33 years ago in 1985. I joined ABATE in 1983 while it was in its beginning. I remember my card number was 254.
town’s 4th of July celebration falling on different times of the week, (I have a huge parade to organize), I got to attend. My brother Tom, good friend Wade, and I loaded up and headed out Saturday morning, July 1 early in the morning for the last big day of the rally. The ride was 135 miles. We stopped in Gilmore City to rest the bladder. I told my brother I was not going to work the magazine this trip and take the week off.
I fell out of the scene and lost my bike shorty after because of what is called a “Love Sale “. For those not knowing what that is, it is when someone you love tells you to sell something and you do! Well, I don’t love her anymore and 5 1/2 years ago I bought another bike. I have been riding hard and making up for lost time. So this year, with the Freedom Rally and my home Yeah right. I took a magazine into the bar and left my card. Ended up taking 200 pictures at the rally for the magazine and ABATE’s Face Book site. We pulled into Algona shortly before 11:00. We went downtown to figure out what we needed before we got to the rally site and how to meet up with our group already there. We walked into a bar thinking it was time for a cheese burger. There sat our buddy Daren Lauritsen that we needed to find. He had been there for a few days and had a place for our tents. He told us where and we parted ways. We pulled into the gate and checked in and proceeded to get all kinds of lost inside. The place was packed and we could not find our people. When we finally found them we pitched our tents. Didn’t take long for Vernon and Melanie

from the magazine to find me. They gave me some pointers and said to find Eric Ross of ABATE with Public Relations driving around in a side by side ATV. Didn’t take long, he drove by and I stopped him. He said “get in”. The Rally site is absolutely amazing. After renting a public park in Humboldt, ABATE bought this land just outside Algona and the first Rally here was in 2002. There are 140 acres with around 10 miles of wellmaintained gravel roads winding through it. It used to be an elk ranch with a 8 foot fence around it. One might think the fence was to keep people out. Back then it kept the animals in. Now it keeps the party animals safe. I spent the better part of 45 minutes with Eric. He showed me the entire park as I took pictures. He took me to a place he said not too many people have ever been. It was way up on top of a hill and had a great view of the park below. He even got me a back stage pass to use for the stage events later on in the day. When we parted, I told him that I could not thank him enough for the tour and hospitality.
And then there are the bands. The head liner this year was Hairball. If you have never seen them, you don’t know what you’re missing. It is a sort of tribute band that does some nine plus different bands all in the same night. In their 16th year of performing, they have as much equipment and a light show as the bands they are impersonating. It is high power stadium rock from the 1980’s. Only the singer does the impersonations. The rest of the band remains Hairball and puts on a show themselves. The lead guitar player is one of the best I have seen. Now there are 3 singers. One on stage at a time as the other two dress up back stage as the band singer they are covering. When that singer comes out, you might think he is the real thing. The one that does David Lee Roth of Van Halen nails it. Oh ya, I had a back stage pass and got to party with the band and take pictures. Frank Fritz from a popular TV series was even running around back stage and he was inside the Monster costume when the band did their Alice Cooper part of the show. It was a long day and an even longer night. I eventually found my way to my tent and woke up to a hangover. Had a good breakfast in the vending area and left the hangover in Algona. With a lot of other things, as they say, What Happens at the Freedom Rally stays at the Freedom Rally!! The Freedom Rally will be held July 5, 6, and 7 in 2018. I always enjoy the vending area. I spend a lot of time here. It is a little like the state fair. People selling everything you can imagine. Food (the smell alone makes you hungry), clothes, leather goods, patches and sewing, jewelry, you name it they’ve got it. You could even hire a lawyer as IowaBikerLawyer.com had a booth. This year I made two main purchases. First, I bought a pair of tactical SWAT boots. I usually can’t find them anywhere except on the Internet. Here I could actually try them on and buy the correct size. And second, I bought beer. Beer prices are reasonable, unlike the state fair or concert venues that gouge you on the price. I think it was Johnny Shakespeare, old Bill’s mead swilling cousin that once said that, or something similar to it. But one of the coolest options we have when riding our mighty iron steeds is when going on a trip, we can do whatever the hell we want! Well, some of the time, you know, within reason, budget restraints, weather conditions, time off from work, demands on our time to get back for the kids sporting events, that yard work that needs to be done, however other than those items we can go where we want, when we want and nothing can stand in our way! “Get Your Motor Runnin… Head out on the Highway, lookin’ for adventure, and a hotel that may come our way”.. To bastardize that song, it can be fun to point the bike in certain direction, swing a leg over and just see where the road takes you. Sadly, it’s becoming a lost art, and maybe that is okay. Sure the rebellion spirit is something that should never leave your soul and it’s part of the pure spirit that moves us to ride year after year. Knowing that you can get on your bike and escape the day to day grind that can suck the life out of your very being gets us out of bed and to work so we can of course, turn around and pay for just that type of adventure. Sure it’s impossible to just “get lost” anymore with GPS mounted right in our rides anymore, heck, need lodging, click the screen or an app on your phone and any number of lodging options will point your way and boom, comfort is ahead. I was told once; I would never be a true “biker” until I slept under a bridge. I guess true “bikers” don’t have credit cards? But either way, even if you are out chasing the horizon, you can figure out options pretty quick and easy. Most are aware that nearly every major touring bike manufacturing company has trip planning software, each a bit different, all seem pretty cool and useful and it’s really what you are comfortable with. A riding buddy that sports a beautiful Heritage Classic insist that ONLY HD trip planner is worth the time and effort, he always does a cool job when we get to escape so we roll with it. I later found out the reason he liked that site, other than the fact that he’s a dedicated Harley guy, he collects shirts from all over and with that trip planner, you could plug in the dealerships you are going to drive by! Sure, planning a trip might not be as romantic and “manly” as just swinging over a leg and cracking a throttle, but for a great time you can do what many do and I’ve done several times. A “Sort of” planned trip. I know, I really need to work on a cooler name, but we’ve done several “sort a” trips, as in, we are going to “sort a” go that way and see what happens. The “sort a” trip, like most other adventures was born out of the need to adjust and overcome more than anything else. My friends and I, all traveling with our special ladies, had planned an early May getaway. Now, nothing against the fair superior sex at all, I love and adore traveling with my bride for many reasons. She loves to ride, is a great co-pilot, isn’t scared of the elements, and always, and I mean ALWAYS has a great, positive attitude when we ride. Well, the number one reason, she’s smells a lot better and is more fun to snuggle 32 - TRMI SEPTEMBER 2017
with in a hotel than my hairier biker buddies when we save money and share quarters. I really cannot understate that point. I’d rather wake up on a road trip next to her than ANY of my biker buddies We pull out at noon on a Saturday with a central Iowa town in mind, there were a few sights and water holes along the way, Memory doesn’t serve exactly what we were riding to nor the reason, but likely a cool road with a cool place to eat at the end. May being May, what started as a sunny nice afternoon we could see that the weather forecasting dude was about to whiff and whiff big. Not more than 100 miles down the road, at the first gas/leg stretch pit stop, the clouds rolled in and the temp dropped a good 15-20 degrees, had it stayed at only a 20 degree drop, the rest of the ride would have been fine. With the weather apps we all have on our phones, it didn’t take more than a basket of cheeseballs to figure out the direction we were going was about to get colder and wetter, quickly. Simple enough cancel those reservations, using an app, find different rooms. Next, pull out the road map (I carry a laminated road map always even with map apps, on the bike, just something cool about looking an actual map and looking for cool roads) and a different route we planned. Another 100 miles, time to stretch again and dig out more warm clothes as the cold front seemed to engulf us no matter what we did. We figured out that direction was not going to work. We had to decide where to head next. I remembered a town about 130 miles away that had a great steak house, quick check on the ‘net indicated that it was still open lodging wasn’t far away and changes in the trip were made again. Once again we were heading out on the highway, looking for whatever may come our way. What came our way was 41 degrees and sleet, but that sometimes happens when you chase the horizon. After a pleasing small town steakhouse, sitting around a nice, clean chain hotel over a nightcap or three, we figured that we were nearly 300 miles away from where we originally had planned to ride too, and nobody was sad. We were laughing, sharing great times with great friends and while we did have a PLAN for a ride, the ride ended up dictating, along with the weather, on where we could safely ride to. It was one of the greatest weekend rides I have been part of. In fact one that we still recall fondly and hope to replicate soon, well, without the sleet and 40 degree temp drop, but the laughs, cheese balls and steak with great friends, I would sign off on in a flash. Don’t let the riding season pass you by without escaping for a trip, no matter what or where you go, support the great clients that support this magazine, make some memories and hey, maybe you can plan it out or at least know you may have to plan another direction. For the month of September for the Military Rider, we bring you Brian Landreth who currently resides in West Des Moines. Brian is our featured Military Rider this month as well as one of the newest additions to the staff here at Thunder Roads! He works in logistics in the trucking industry for his full time job, so if you need things hauled or want to buy an ad, Brian is your guy. Brian is not a native to Iowa, he is a transplant, but we don’t hold that against him. His parents grew up in Union County though, which you can read more about on pages 18 and 19 as the featured county for the 99 County pages this month. His main stomping ground was in Missouri as a kid, mostly in the Kansas City area, but did enjoy his trips to Union County to visit family there. Brian spent five years of active duty in the United States Air Force. His primary job while serving was working on weapons systems on fighter jets. He worked on F-16’s, F-15’s, 15’s, A-10’s, F-111’s and F-4’s. For his Military litary career, he traveled to about 12 countries ies and loved every second of it. He spent a few months in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. After a 17 year break from the United States Airr Force, Brian joined the Iowa Air National Guard for or an additional six years. During this second time around serving our great nation, he again spent his time working on F-16 weapons systems. Brian separated from service for good when budget cuts ended the reign of the F-16 fighter jets in Iowa.
He got his first motorcycle, a 1978 Honda CB 750 (4 cylinder) in 1987 while he was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. It was the only vehicle he owned for three or more years. He got hooked on riding by taking excursions along the coastal highways, and also along the islands of the northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico. After a few years without motorcycles simply due to life, he got the itch to get back on two wheels again. Brian got back into riding in the early 2000’s. Brian has had four bikes total in his lifetime. From the tally of miles on these four, he has probably worn out four bikes as well! He has racked up about 250,000 miles total between all of them he has owned. His current ride is a Triumph Adventurer and he has about 105,000 miles on it. All but 7,000ish of those miles are from Brian, and this summer he should hit the 100,000 mile mark on his bike with him at the controls. Brian states that every bike manufacturer has made a bike he hhas really liked at some point. He is simply a llover of motorcycles in general, and adds, “I lov love all bikes really.”
Brian has a son who is almost 17 years old, and is first and foremost in Brian’s world. They enjoy hanging out together whenever possible, but when he is not spending time with his boy, Brian can be found out riding his Triumph. Brian is no fair weather rider though, as you can see him out on the roads unless there is snow and ice present.
Brian also add adds, “Riding is my passion and I love the lifestyle an and the good people in it.” Brian spends quite a bit of time riding by himself due to his schedule and others not being able to get away, but he enjoys the serenity and watching the miles add up while the stress goes away. He adds, “a guy I met from the Vietnam Vets MC once told me: No matter what you got in your head...if one tank of gas won’t fix it, two will.” If you see Brian out and about on his Triumph, give him a hearty wave, or shake his hand and thank him for his service. Surely you have heard about wind therapy. Wind therapy in my world consists of random thoughts racing through my brain faster than my two wheels can roll down the road. Hang on tight you are about to enter a sick mind.

Smells pretty big and can’t see a bike with a biker on it, why would they see that there is a lot of it, smells like a deer 4 weeks ago now it is a shoe. I wonder where the body that shoe belongs to is at. I perfectly seasoned buzzard buffet. I’m not scared of much but hope that wasn’t the road kill I smelled, it does makes sense the Iowa Turkey Buzzard terrifies me. First off they absolutely get rid of the body first then the shoe. I better pay attention I will not fly away from a good meal. Secondly, if you are think there is a PH ahead. what you eat, those buzzards have got to be loaded with some pretty rank, runny smelling shit. I have heard that once they I’ve heard a lot of riders talking about Autumn coming to do fly away, they intentionally swoop back, take aim and fire Iowa. I don’t understand why everyone is so excited about off a load directly at you for disturbing their feast. Getting hit this chic; all I’ve heard is how pretty she is, oh yea and with that shit terrifies me to the point that I think I just peed she’s cool. I wonder why I never met a hippie that I didn’t like after all they invented Iowa has never put up any Slow Deer signs like they do for all the whole PLD movement, oh that’s a good one I better add those Slow Children. that to my list. Smells like somebody is having a barbeque, I wonder if I pull in and claim to be a distant relative if they would feed me. Hell my own relatives won’t invite me to barbeques why would a complete stranger. One look at me, they will call the cops, I will end up in jail for the murder of a one legged dude. The way my luck goes, I will have the dudes DNA all over me because I interrupted a Turkey Buzzard Buffet. My only defense will be to claim that the shoe doesn’t fit and change my name to OJ. We try y to get out and nd aboutt to different ent eventss all over the state, and one ad we had een not been to in a few years was The Angell Ride ve to Save athe TaTas. This year the ompleted run completed ear, and its 11th yyear, one off the th eventt organizers, i Lynda Lowery, always makes sure we are invited and taken care of when we are there. The run this year was on July 15th and started and ended in Fort Dodge at Amigo’s. The run benefits breast cancer patients within a 75 mile radius of Fort Dodge to help cover uninsured services. The money raised buys wigs, scarves, transportation expenses, and other things that insurance does not cover. All were welcome on

motorcycle run, so cars, trucks, vans, and the moto even party pa buses and all were free to join in on and fundraising efforts! At the end at the fun a Amigo’s there were also silent and live auctions Amigo and plenty of food and fun. The run in the past has been anywhere from 200 to 500 people, and the crowd this year sure looked to surpass that number. Despite the heat, there we were plenty of bikers and hot rodders willing to help. After leaving Amigo’s, the run stopped in a handf handful of stops. The Iron Saddle in Dayton, The Lucky Pig in Ogden, The Event Center in Bo Boone, Malibu Lounge in Jewell, and then St Stumpy’s in Duncombe before returning ba back to Fort Dodge. the ham and cheese. The onion rings as a side were prepared with seasoned flour with just a touch of bite, and the onions were all sliced thinly for a wonderful onion to breading ratio, that needed no dipping sauces of any kind. Just simple onion rings with nothing else needed, what could be better?

On July 15th, we had the pleasure of riding along on the Angel Ride to Save the Ta Tas out of Fort Dodge. One of the stops on the run was at The Lucky Pig Pub & Grill in Ogden. The place was crazy busy with normal business and the run, so in the sake of time, we decided to grab a bite elsewhere. While we sat there chatting with some friends though, they got some food and it looked so good that we just had to return that evening on the way home to try out some grub.
I opted for the Best Burger, which is not at all traditional in the burger sense, as it is ground pork and ground bacon mixed together in a patty of awesomeness! The patty was served on a pretzel bun and Joey was of the utmost assistance, suggesting the pepper jack cheese and a side of BBQ sauce to further enhance the flavors of the sandwich. Bacon when ground does not give the crisp fried bacon flavor, but more of a smoky accent to the meat. The ground pork and bacon combined, when grilled, give a slight smoky pork flavor that is not overpowering, and was perfectly grilled to juicy perfection. The lighter texture of the meat was a great pairing with the slightly chewy pretzel roll, and a quick dip in the sauce added an extra layer of flavor. My side was the French Fries which were GBD, but I had to snag some of Melanie’s onion rings because they were so delicious.
Joey came back to the table to check on us throughout the meal, and then when finished came to snag the plates and asked if we wanted pie. With an appetizer and the sandwiches, we were already We were seated and the waitress Joey came over to get pleasantly full, and would have our drink order. Melanie opted for the Bay of Pigs, which is the Lucky Pig’s own rendition of a Cuban. The sandwich started with a hoagie style roll and then thinly sliced ham is added, then some roasted pork, Swiss cheese and then mustard. The sandwich was heated/toasted/pressed, but with the thicker bread, it was a toasted bit of goodness with more of a mix between a traditional flat Cuban and a sub sandwich. The roasted pork was lightly seasoned, juicy, and added a wonderful addition to 42 - TRMI SEPTEMBER 2017
Another great thing from this visit was seeing the owners, Deb and Randy running around serving customers earlier in the day on the Angel Ride, and then also to see them there that evening working their own place and making sure customers were happy. A farmer was selling his peaches door to door. He knocked on a door and a shapely 30-something woman dressed in a very sheer negligee answered the door. Being in EMS for 16 years I have been to a few accident scenes involving motorcycles, from on the highways to dirt bikes on the farm. Boy do I wish I had taken this class in the past. I can’t stress how much was learned in this up beat fun class.
