THESIS-A DESIGN-LED ENQUIRY INTO TECHNIQUES OF PERFORMATIVE FOLDING Type:Independent Tutor:Phil Ayres Date:02/2015-06/2015 This project investigates varieties of techniques of perfomative folding which will be applied on pop-up architecture. The reason why i want to investigate is folding has both structural and aethestic capacity.Pop-up architecture has deep architecture quality and it is radical in design even though it is temporary. It gives the oppotunity to apply the techniques of perfomative folding on.The methods of investigation will be in these aspect: material, physical model, computation simulation, architecture content .
COMPUTATION SIMULATION Grasshopper plug-in Kangroo could simulate the behavior of folding as long as we have the unfolded plan. Further exploration is to give load to it to get the ideal shape we want.

This is a three week workshop. The focus will be on strategies for the design and construction of thinshell masonry spanning and boundary elements. The primary purpose of the workshop is to develop a critical appreciation of the ways in which the consideration of construction influences design methods and proposition.
If the bending rods are used as construction method - there have to be 2 layers of bricks. One possible solution for the construction then is an overlapping zone in the middle.

DISADVANTAGE:
1.All the thing are symetric,it makes the mechenical system simpler and it is more suitable for modular use.
1.It is too complicated and have too much possibilities. It is hard to find a pringciple to develp in the next step. 2.There is no reason to make the level of opening in a single component different .

RESIDENCIAL STUDIO OF ARTIST Site:Wenshan Lake,Shenzhen University,P.R.China Type:Independent Tutor:Yin Ziyuan Date:10/2008-11/2008 The site is located in the Wenshan Lake of Shenzhen university. The surrounding environment is so good. There are many trees and it is always so quiet.I want the building is very concise, which looks very outstanding among the surrounding buildings. So i make its shape is only a cube and its facade is covered by aluminum mesh.Besides,The building is built on the lake, which looks like a box floating on the lake.

After transformation, the new building will attract more people to consume. The main pedestrian flow seperate the site into several parts. Then, i would plant more trees and grass in the site, which make the eviroment better .
STRUCTURAL DIAGRAM

The site is located in the intersection of Honglingnan Road and Jinguanghua Road. Most of the surrouding buildings are offices , commerce and residence. But the equipment of the cinema are obsolete and there are always a lot of noise.Hence, the cinema has been closed for a long time.I need to do a lot of reserch in order to improve the environment of the site, which could help to bring so much benifit to the surrounding residents.I think this site is like a garden in the city. The concept is came from the senaries of nature, terrace, which would atrract more people to visit.

INTERGRATED SHORELINE+MOBILE COMMUNITY
Shenzhen&Hongkong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Achitecture Leader: Zhu Xiongyi, Zeng Guansheng Date:08/2011-12/2011 Partner: 6 person Contribution:concept design,section&plan drawing,analysis drawing,model,rendering
Port is a window for goods transfer and distribution between lands. For centuries, the form of port grows from fishing port to city mega infrastructure, and the port industry becomes an important driving force for local and hinterland’s economy. However, inevitably, port also imposes negative effect on space for public use, since its occupation of high-quality waterfront areas.Meanwhile, sea level rise caused by global warming is incrementally invading port areas, as well as threatening port operation. Therefore, with the world growing ever closer through globalization and resources growing ever more in demand, the future of the port lies in efficient and sustainable living. As the land use efficiency of the ports increase, more space becomes available for multi-purpose programs, and port industries are transformed to multiple industries related to the human scale with complex functions. The new industry itself is rich in experience, high in output, but low in input and consumption. The development of the third industry will be a gradually penetrating process to utilize the natural resources along the coastline. Mobile Culture, Creative Community proposes that logistics, business, living and recreation along the shoreline become more closely inter-connected and interdependent, creating a new and robust port economy. Furthermore, to meet the demand of communication and integration between industries in the new port economy, a new “mobile industry” forms a globally productive network of different industries and communities which allow for effective communication and creative cooperation. Wherever the mobile industries stop, not only do they promote and market themselves, but also they learn from the crash and confluence of different industries to realize self-regeneration and self-promotion.
