Message from the Chairman

“Autumn is the season to find contentment at home by paying attention to what we already have” It is the time of the year when we feel thankful for everything in our lives. I personally think that gratitude also drives us to be more productive. I am an ‘old-school, blood and blisters businessman. After my recent experience going undercover in ITV’s Undercover Big Boss, I have realized how gratitude allows us to celebrate and magnify goodness. It has the power to energize, the power to heal and the power to bring hope. I’ve done a couple of other TV programmes before, but this one was too real, too close to my heart. I felt sitting in the head office, I was losing touch. I felt that I was losing the connection from the grassroots of the business. After going undercover and meeting my park employees, my residents, contractors – I feel that I have gained a new perspective. I would like to thank you all for being part of this family. Best wishes

Revitalize & Renew Summer is definitely fun, but when the weather gets cooler and the leaves start falling, we know that a change is happening. Autumn is the season of transition from the hot, bright summer into the cold, dark nights of winter and all of the fun the end of the year brings. When autumn is here, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas be far away! Pumpkins, hot apple cider, warm sweaters, fluffy scarves, boots… these are all things we have to look forward to in the coming weeks. Our garden contest winners have been declared and the list is inside. We would like to wish all the winners’ congratulations and thank you to everyone who took the time to send us the pictures of their lovely gardens. As part of our yearly tradition we will be organizing a ‘Park Home Christmas Decorations Special’. We would like to invite all our residents to send us their pictures and we will be declaring winners who have the most beautifully decorated home.

Best wishes, Wyldecrest Marketing team

COVID-19

Stay safe & limit the spread LOCKDOWN LIFTED • 38MILLION+ FULLY VACCINATED Most of the UK has moved into their lowest danger levels. This has alleviated many of the legal restrictions brought about to tackle the coronavirus (COVID-19). For many in the UK, this has meant: • You no longer need to stay 2 metres apart from people outside your household • The Government is no longer advising people to work from home if possible • Wearing a face covering/mask is no longer a requirement • Weddings, civil partnerships and other events no longer have limits on attendees • Many more business types & venues are able to reopen and resume as normal • No limit on the amount of people you can meet with, indoors or outdoors Despite the lifting of restrictions, and the development of a vaccine, it’s important we all remain vigilant in managing the risks of COVID and avoiding a resurgence. It’s still advised to keep some distance from others, wear a face mask in public and wash our hands frequently.

CATCH IT.

We’re still considered to be in a third wave, it’s still possible to catch and spread the disease. You should still self-isolate if you’re showing symptoms of the virus or if you’ve been contacted by the NHS Test & Trace. If you haven’t had your vaccine yet you should book it now. As of writing, the vaccine is available to all adults 18 and over, you do not need to wait to be contacted by the NHS. More information related to your specific region can be found at www.nhs.uk The vaccines approved for use in the UK meet the safety, quality and effectiveness standards of the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Rules are still in place regarding the virus, with the possibility of more being introduced in the future. More information & resources can be found at www.gov.uk/coronavirus

Guy Fawkes Night: A brief history

Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night or Firework Night, is a hallmark of the British autumnal season! It is usually held on the 5th of November and comprises of fireworks and bonfires held across the country. The night honours the failure of the Gunpowder Plot on the 5th of November 1605, when a group of Catholic plotters planned to blow up parliament and kill the Protestant King James I. In May 1604 Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby, Tom Wintour, Jack Wright and Thomas Percy met at the Duck and Drake inn in London, where Catesby revealed a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament using gunpowder. The group put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament in London with the plan that Fawkes would light a fuse during the opening of a new session of Parliament. If successful, they expected that James I, his eldest son, the House of Lords and the House of Commons would all succumb to the explosion whilst Fawkes would flee by boat across the River Thames. During this, the other plotters would start an uprising in the English Midlands, kidnap James’ daughter Elizabeth, install her as a puppet queen and eventually find an appropriate Catholic suitor for her to marry, thus restoring the Catholic monarchy. Unfortunately for the plotters, a few days before the opening of parliament, Lord Monteagle, a member of the House of Lords and a Catholic, received an anonymous letter warning him not to attend Parliament on the 5th of November. He then informed the government of what he had received. It has been speculated that this was written by his brother-in law who was one of the conspirators. There are also suspicions that the letter could have been written by Monteagle himself to win the favour of the king. More scandalously, it has been suggested that it could have even been someone in, or linked to the government to set up the plotters in order to provide a strong propaganda for the government against Catholics. However, the identity of the writer of the letter has never been confirmed. Sometime in the evening of the 4th–5th November 1605, the eve of the state opening of the second session of James’s first English Parliament, Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with the barrels of gunpowder and matches in his pockets. He was then tortured until he revealed the names of his co-conspirators. Most of the plotters were eventually captured, forced to confess to treason, and hanged, drawn and quartered at the Tower of London as a lesson to others.

“Remember, remember the Fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot, I know of no reason Why the Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot.”

Celebrations near our Parks

• For our residents at The Willows Park, Aldingbourne Park, Beechfield Park, The Marigolds Park, Orchard Park, and Silver Lakes Park you are very lucky! Lewes in Sussex hosts the biggest Guy Fawkes Night in the UK on the 5th of November 2021. It comprises flaming torches, creative effigies of celebrities and politicians, costumes, and a world-class display of fireworks. Each year the town’s population of 18,000 is almost quadrupled for Guy Fawkes Night. The Lewes bonfire is particularly special because it also memorialises the 17 Protestant martyrs burnt to death by Mary I (also known as Bloody Mary) in the town in the 1500s. There will be 30 plus processions starting from around 5pm, and then there will be the grand processions around 9pm. • Four our residents at Rookery Drove Park, Saxon Park, and Blueleighs Park, you have the chance to attend The Long Melford Big Night Out at Long Melford Hall Park, Suffolk, CO10 9AA. The date is TBA however it is guaranteed to be a thoroughly entertaining evening if past years are anything to go by! The event is organised by Project Seven and is one of the largest bonfire and firework shows. All of the proceeds will go directly to local charities. The fireworks display is choreographed by Pains Fireworks who have a great reputation for their magnificent firework displays; in fact they are longest established firework display company in the UK. In theme with Guy Fawkes Night, according to Pains Fireworks, it has been suggested that the barrels of gunpowder used in the Gunpowder Plot were “manufactured by a gunpowder manufacturer within earshot of the Bells of Bow”. At that time the only such business was one John Pain, the founder of the modern day Pains Fireworks. What better way to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night than to integrate yourself in the very history of the night! • For our residents at Beckenham Park, Bradgate Park, The Otterham Park, Wickens Meadow Park, Wass Drove Park, and Shirkoak Park, you have the opportunity to attend the Leeds Castle Fireworks Spectacular in Maidstone. The event will be held on the 6th and 7th of November 2021 from 5.30pm. The event is often referred to as the biggest and best fireworks display in the South East of England. You also have the option of arriving from 2pm as there will be various attractions to enjoy such as falconry displays and a maze. • For our residents at Tranquility Park, Beechwood Park, Beechdown Park, and Berrynarbor Park, you can have the special and unique experience of witnessing the racing of flaming tar barrels at Ottery St. Mary in Devon. The event will take place on the 5th of November 2021. Dating from the 17th century, only residents who were born in the town or who have lived there most of their lives have the opportunity to carry a barrel which has been soaked in tar and set alight through various parts of the town. The barrels, which can weigh up to 30 kg, are carried through the town centre, in an adrenaline-charged spectacle. If you choose to witness this event, be aware of the safety precautions necessary as the narrow streets can become crowded and you will be near burning tar barrels.

Did you know? Our next Bonfire Night Fact remains somewhat mysterious! Resting to the North-West of Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos Islands is the uninhabited island, named Isla Guy Fawkes or Guy Fawkes Island. To this day, no one knows why the island claimed the name; maybe it was where he planned to escape to?
