Message from the Chairman

Dear friends, This unusual coronavirus pandemic has created a situation in which the whole world is pushing back against fear and isolation. In this time of crisis, we are all neighbours & friends, and now more than ever we need to be there for each other. We should also spare a special thought for our heroic healthcare workers on the front-lines battling this awful virus, and for all those working to keep our cities and towns going. Let us remember the most vulnerable of the vulnerable around the world. As we prepare to celebrate the joyful festival of Christmas, we all need to turn towards hope & solidarity to guide us. Let us not live in fear, let us live in faith. It is a tough time but we will get through this – together! I would like to join everyone here at Wyldecrest Parks to wish you and your loved ones a very merry Christmas & a joyful New Year. We all deserve a magical Christmas this year – so please treat yourself and your loved ones, spread love & cheer, but remember to celebrate wisely and be considerate.

Downsizing - What are your options?

Like Father, Like Son: A Wyldecrest Story Park in Focus: Cranbourne Hall

“Christmas will always be as long as we stand heart to heart & hand in hand.” Dr. Seuss

A warm Wyldecrest Winter! Christmas means more than tinsel and glittering gifts under the Christmas tree, Christmas means revived hope in our hearts. If we look back at the photos of Christmas 50 years ago, we can see what a simple place it once was. What we wanted for Christmas was a very short list of possibilities, and what we received we cherished for a long time to come. This year has been unique and very difficult. If anything, this Christmas comes at the perfect moment for self-reflection, as we face a challenge. It also brings optimism & joy of which we need to hold on to & share to make sure that no one feels alone at this beautiful time. We here at Wyldecrest wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To spread some cheer & have some fun, we are back with lots of M&S shopping vouchers – and they are very easy for you to win. Just share with us photos of your beautiful park home all bright & shining with some lovely festive decorations, this Christmas. You can post them to our Facebook page, email them to us magazine@wyldecrestparks.com or post them to us. More details can be found on page 23.

Thank you NHS STAY HOME

SAVE LIVES

PROTECT THE NHS

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has managed to maintain its deadly grip across the globe. Many countries have continued their restrictive measures, including local & national lockdowns and self-isolation procedures. The virus doesn’t discriminate, and has proven to be a persistent danger to everyone. Despite this, healthcare workers have persevered, doing their best to provide necessary care for the ill and injured. We’d like to extend another heartfelt thank you to the NHS and all key workers around the world for continuing to do their part in tackling the virus.

In response to the continued threat of COVID-19, the UK has seen various combinations of initiatives to reduce the rate of it spreading. These include a tiered restriction system, selfisolation and another full lockdown in November 2020. The virus seems to spread particularly well in enclosed spaces. We should all be aware of how simple, everyday interactions may inadvertently cause risks for others, as we huddle up indoors this winter. We can aid the NHS, by diminishing the chances of catching/spreading the virus.

HANDS Wash your hands with soap & water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer, regularly throughout the day.

FACE Wearing a covering over your mouth and nose can reduce potentially dispersing COVID droplets carried in the air.

NHS UK recommends the following: • Wash your hands when arriving home or into work • Ensure you wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds • Cover your mouth & nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing • Bin the tissue, and wash your hands afterwards • Use hand sanitizer if there’s no soap and water • Follow social distancing measures

SPACE Transmission most likely happens within 2 metres. Making space has an impact on containing the spread. Gov. campaign introduced on Sept 2020 More information and resources can be found at www.gov.uk/coronavirus

Catch it.

Bin it.

Kill it.

If you believe you may be showing signs of coronavirus, do not panic, dial 1 1 1 and talk to the services there - do not go to a GP or hospital under these circumstances. 5

Residential Park Home: Our Move PARK IN FOCUS: SALTMARSHE CASTLE PARK

Our Saltmarshe Castle Park continues to be a popular choice among many, and has even appeared in our TV programs & commercials. It has also been featured in a documentary produced by the BBC on how residential parks like Saltmarshe provide an excellent solution for luxury, low-cost downsizing especially for the older population. Its newest residents include the lovely Susan & John Crawford: We were quite local, living in our 3 bed detached home in Worcester with our lovely 2 cats. One of our close friends moved to a Wyldecrest residential park in Wales – Westover Park. We decided to visit them (we wanted to see park homes & also learn from someone who had actually made a move to a park home themselves). When we visited the park, we thought it was lovely and were quite impressed by how spacious & well laid out a park home really is. We were not expecting such welldesigned luxury bungalows which are spacious for a comfortable lifestyle. So we went back & researched a few parks in the area & we kept hearing a lot about Saltmarshe Castle Park. Our friends recommended Wyldecrest Parks so we decided to visit the park. Each & every resident is ready to help & say hello & tell us their experience with Wyldecrest and park life in general. We liked what we saw, we decided to part-exchange our home & reserve a lovely Accent park home in the park. The home has lovely views over the countryside & comes fully furnished. From the date we reserved the home to the time we moved – it took us about 6 months & the entire experience has been excellent. We have been on the park for 2 weeks now and we absolutely love park life. It is a safe & an extremely picturesque and friendly place to live. Our 2 cats are enjoying life and have settled in well.

Susan Crawford

Our Saltmarshe Castle Park is blessed in terms of its beautiful, peaceful woodland location. It is a haven of peace & quiet and boasts beautiful views over the Malvern Hills & Bromyard downs. Within the local area is wide range of farms, amazing garden centres, family restaurants with homemade food and hand-craft gift shops.

A Willerby Charnwood is available on this park.

There are many brand new homes available to view on this park, including a Wessex Dorset (40 x 20, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) starting from £169,995 & the elegant Willerby Charnwood (36 x 20, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms), from £164,995, and an Omar Elveden Cottage (45 x 20, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms). There are plenty more plots available. 9

Like Father Like Son: a Wyldecrest Story PARK IN FOCUS: THE OLD RECTORY MEWS PARK

The Old Rectory Mews Park in Newquay recently saw a new addition in Mr & Mrs Doody, following in the footsteps of his father! It’s always inspiring to hear cross-generational tales. It has been absolutely brilliant! Our only regret: we wish we had done it sooner! We first started looking at park homes because my dad lives in another Wyldecrest residential park! Yes, he lives in the Surrey Hills residential park in Guildford, Surrey. He couldn’t recommend park living enough! So I always knew that I would downsize to a residential park development & I knew I would choose Wyldecrest. We looked at the various park locations – we were spoilt for choices but I always wanted to be near the beach & Cornwall has been a firm favourite. We used to holiday in Cornwall all our childhood & it’s like a dream location for us. Kim & I had our heart set on the Old Rectory development but it was at full capacity. Then a sale fell through so a home became available, we didn’t waste a minute & reserved the home right away! We both work in caring for the elderly so it was easy to relocate at work. We have 2 lovely French bull-dogs called Tilly & Paris. The development had to be pet-friendly, there was no two ways about it! So basically, The Old Rectory ticked all our boxes & we moved quickly! We were living in a cottage before & when we have moved to our lovely new park home – we have managed to pay off our mortgage & have no other bills or loans to feel stressed about! Plus we have freed up extra cash which has made the move so brilliant! The community spirit on the park is unbeatable. We have made so many friends in the 2 weeks we have been here! Everyone goes out of their way to talk, help, suggest their preferred shops, restaurants & recommendations There are so many local shops and the beach is so close that it’s our favourite place to go when we have a spare minute. You know what; we lived in a house all these years & hardly knew more than 2 neighbours. In these 2 weeks here, we have met all residents & found friends for life! Everyone is in a similar age/situation & so friendly! We can’t recommend it enough & wish we had done it sooner!

Mr & Mrs Doody

The Old Rectory Mews Park is spread across approximately 4 acres of land, surrounded by fields providing amazing views across the open Cornish countryside. The park is within easy reach of the A30 and approximately 5 miles from the popular destinations of Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay. Well worth a visit is the Rick Steins restaurant in Padstow. We have 1 last plot available on this extremely popular park. You can get a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom home for just £115,995; a Willerby Hazlewood (42 x 10, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom). It’s still available for viewing!

The last home on this park, a Willerby Hazlewood. 13

Park home living - My take

PARK IN FOCUS: CRANBOURNE HALL PARK

Cranbourne Hall, our newest park, lies in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Crowned by the stunning Windsor Castle – the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world and the Queen’s favourite weekend home – and linked by the beautiful River Thames, the area has a rich mix of history, culture, heritage and fun. Making it one of South East England’s loveliest short break destinations.

We met with Shane O Hara, our resident park manager on Cranbourne Hall. Shane has been living on the park for almost 17 years now. He moved from Bracknell, just down the road and started work as a maintenance assistant on the park. About 8 years ago he transitioned to a park manager & has been looking after the park & the residents ever since. I live alone & my lovely daughter visits me on weekends. But I have actually never ever felt alone in the park. Everybody knows everybody & I actually mean it. In these last few months of lockdown it hasn’t been lonely because we all know each other & there is always someone to talk to all the time. The Squirrels Pub (right outside the entrance of the park) literally was like the community hub of the park. Many residents visit the pub often. It has now closed & we are hoping for it to be reopened very soon. The whole park is quite a happy place! We have a convenience shop on the park which is quite handy. The nearest Tesco is about 3 miles & the Ascot train station is less than 1.5 miles from the park. The Windsor Great Park is literally across the road & very popular for walks & picnics among our residents. We are very close to the M4, the M3 & have easy access to the River Thames. Our site fees are quite economical at about £190 per month. Council Tax is about £80 per month. The utilities which include gas, water & electric come to about £100 per month (of course these depend on the size of the home & usage etc.). So all in all, it is about £370 monthly outgoings. It is a beautiful part of the world to live in & there are so many places to visit & frequent. Our park has about 3 garden centres in close proximity! We are doing development on the park & have homes coming soon. You can also choose a plot & we can site a bespoke home of your choice to the park.

70 Years on Park & Counting PARK IN FOCUS: CRANBOURNE HALL PARK From our park manager to one of the residents. Ruth Allen has lived on our Cranbourne Hall Park for 70 years! We acquired this park a few months back & it has been such a pleasure to catch up with as many residents as we can, welcoming them into the Wyldecrest family and hearing their stories. Ruth’s long history on the park is astonishing, and a pleasure to hear. I moved to the park when I was 4 years old with my family. It was a great place to live & I have such great memories of growing up in this area. It is an extremely friendly park. It is also a family park & anyone above 18 can buy a home on the park to live in. It is however, peaceful & lovely and being a family park does not mean that it is noisy or not a comfortable place to live. I got married & continued to live on the park, my husband Mark moved here from London. A lot of residents on the park were working on the Heathrow project & this location made it very convenient to work there. This park has come a very long way from those years though. The homes used to be vastly different in those years from what they are now. It has grown to be a luxury residential park home development with fancy luxury bungalows but the inherent feeling of community & camaraderie has still remained the same. We all know each other & spend a lot of time with our friends & neighbours in the park. It is an extremely nice area to live in – after all it’s the Royal borough & one of UK’s most prestigious boroughs.

Ruth Allen We’d like to say thank you to each resident for sharing your story with us. Wishing you & your families years of health & happiness on your respective parks - and a happy Christmas!

Cranbourne Hall Park is located in the idyllic Thames Valley, and offers a rural retreat that’s just a stone’s throw from local amenities. Windsor is one of the UK’s most prestigious locations, with Windsor Castle being the official residence of the Her Majesty the Queen, and the town boasts pretty streets, beautiful parks and a fine variety of shopping and leisure facilities. We have brand new luxury homes available to view, including an Omar Anniversay (50 x 22, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) starting from £260,000 & the affordable Wyldecrest exclusive model; the Omar Westbury (36 x 20, 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms), with more availability and plots being developed. Downsizing: Just down the road PARK IN FOCUS: PENWORTHAM PARK

Can you imagine, continuing to live less than 2 miles from the comfort of where you’ve always lived but in a newer, more modern bungalow with money in your bank & reduced bills every month? Does it sound good? It gets better. Imagine part-exchanging your home & moving into your choice of a brand new home in 3 weeks. Well, that is what Mr David & Mrs Barbara Millar decided to do. This is their story. We have always lived locally, literally - we lived in Lostock Hall about 1.6 miles down the road from Penwortham Residential Park. Our daughter is local as well. We wanted to downsize as we are getting older & we were not able to manage the 3-bedroom house very well. The home & the garden were just too much to manage and were not bringing us any joy. We decided to explore our downsizing options – went to see the residential park & the homes available. We fell in love with the Hazlewood park home. It’s fresh, new and has lovely warm furnishings & colours throughout. We were so happy with our choice that we decided to do it immediately. The finance part of it makes so much sense – we live in the same area but we managed to release money from our home sale, plus also don’t have any mortgage left. We pay the cheapest council tax and our electric & water bills have gone down. We part-exchanged our house & moved into our lovely new home within 3 weeks! We are now settling-in & couldn’t be happier about this decision. It’s a lovely place and we are slowly getting to know all our neighbours.

Mr & Mrs Millar Penwortham Residential Park is situated in the residential suburb of Penwortham, approximately 2.5 miles south of Preston City Centre. The city offers excellent shopping choices and general amenities. Despite being close to the centre of Preston, the park itself is both quiet and secluded, situated in a unique sheltered location with an attractive, scenic view. There are brand new homes available to view on this park, including an Omar Regency (42 x 12, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom) starting from £102,000. There’s also a Willerby Hazlewood (36 x 20, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms), from £121,995, and more. There is also a choice of plots available. An Omar Regency is available on this park. 20

Downsizing: What are your options?

The Office for National Statistics said the number of over 65s is projected to grow twice as fast as the working-age population over the next 10 years.

Many retirees also like to fund their children onto the property ladder, but unless they have special purpose-built housing options, they remain stuck, as their funds are still diverted.

It’s common knowledge that older owners tend to have properties bigger than they need. As a result, their life’s savings tend to be absorbed by their property. There is also the question of how to effectively manage or modernise these excessive properties.

A very big criticism of park homes was that they are very close together & there is no sense of privacy or space. But all that has changed massively.

Statistics say about 40% of owners aged 65 & above are actively considering downsizing – a number which is going up. Owners aged 65 and older release approximately £80,000 on an average, when they downsize. There are many options available when you downsize. Some popular choices include: Care Homes have recently been badly affected by the COVID pandemic and many customers are not considering them at all. Apartments are an attractive option, but they need to be weighed against the costs & the convenience. Purpose-built retirement villages are generally quite expensive & many have a 2-floor layout which may not be the most sensible situation as we age.

This park has come a very long way from those years though. The homes used to be vastly different in those years from what they are now. It has grown to be a luxury residential park home development with fancy luxury bungalows but the inherent feeling of community & camaraderie has still remained the same. We all know each other & spend a lot of time with our friends & neighbours on the park.

Ruth, Cranbourne Hall Park Our residential parks are purpose-built, ensuring you get parking next to your home, and garden space. The homes are modern, fully-furnished & the kitchens have integrated appliances. Each new home can be customised as per your needs & preferences.

Residential park homes offer a great option because they are extremely affordable, have a bungalow style-layout and a strong community aspect. They are aimed for the above 45s/50s, and everyone is in a similar situation in their life. Retirement housing usually means small, uninspiring homes or unsuitable housing. This puts a lot of people off the idea, as they would like to downsize to nice, modern bungalows but maintain necessary infrastructure, facilities & support as needed. 21

Season’s Treatings! Figgy Pudding Ingredients

175g Figs 225g Dates 100g Prunes 125g Dark Muscovado Sugar 2 Eggs 50g Self-raising flour (wholemeal) 100ml Brandy 100ml Orange Juice Orange Zest 1 tbsp Mixed Spices 175g Bread Crumbs

Method Using kitchen scissors, chop the figs, dates & prunes into slices. Put the fruits into a bowl with the brandy, and leave it to soak overnight.

The following day, mix the flour, sugar, spices, breadcrumbs & eggs together, then add the orange zest & the juice. Continue to mix until it is well combined.

Transfer the mixture into a 1litre pudding bowl. Cut out a circle of baking paper that is at least twice the size of the bottom of the bowl. Make a slight fold in the middle, then place it over the bowl and cover with a circle of pleated foil. You will need to secure it well with string, and create a loop handle over the top.

Put a saucer plate in a large pan followed by the bowl of mixture, before you add enough boiling water to cover three quarters of the pudding bowl.

Place an appropriate lid over the pan, and then bring it to a boil. Lower the heat and allow it to simmer for four hours, add water if necessary.

When fully cooked, remove the bowl from the pan. Turn the pudding over and serve with a nice helping of custard.

Creamy Eggnog •

Ingredients

8 Eggs (separated) 240g Heavy cream 946ml Whole milk 1/4 tbsp Grated nutmeg 2 tbsp Pure vanilla extract 150g Granulated sugar 177ml Dark liquor Pinch of Salt 2 Cinnamon sticks (broken)

Method Mix the cream, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg with two cups of milk in a medium pan. Let it simmer over medium heat until it begins to bubble around the edges – not boil. After 2 to 3 minutes, remove it from the heat to cool.

With an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks on medium speed until combined. Then slowly beat in the sugar & salt. Increase to higher speed until the mixture is thick and very pale in colour.

Use a strainer to separate & discard the solids, before returning the liquid to a pot. Beat 1 cup of warm cream into the yolk on low speed, add this to the main mix on the pot. Let it all cook on a medium heat. Continuously stir until the mixture visibly coats the back of the spoon.

Place the mixture pot over a bowl with ice water and let it cool, stirring occasionally. When chilled, mix in the dark liquor and the remaining cups of milk.

Beat egg whites until soft, before folding into the eggnog. Serve with grated nutmeg to garnish. 29

Christmas Trivia

Did you know... The Elf on a Shelf tradition is relatively new? It started in 2005, based on a book by American author Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell.

Mistletoe’s name comes from the Anglo Saxon ‘Mistel’ (dung) and ‘tan’ (twig), meaning “dungstick”. The first recorded use of ‘Merry Christmas’ was in a Christmas letter sent in 1534.

It is traditional to take down the decorations on January 6th (Epiphany).

Brits love exchanging cards! It’s estimated over 2 billion cards are sent each year, with Christmas cards making up 45%.

Contrary to popular belief, Coca-Cola actually based their depiction of Santa Claus on illustrations from 1863.

Rudolph (and Santa’s other reindeer) would most likely be female! Female reindeer keep their antlers throughout winter, whereas males tend to lose them by Christmas time.
