A MODERN VILLAGE DESIGN FOR INDIAN PUEBLO PEOPLE Site: New Mexico Date: Jan.2013 to May.2013 Advisor: Laurie Olin, Tony Atkin

Instead of superimpose an American Levittown model, we set up 3 basic principles at the beginning for designing the new village: first is to cherish the heritage of locate pueblo people, including traditional village settlement pattern, culture custom and life experience; second is to organize the whole community in a subtle yet harmony way towards the vast nature surroundings;

third is to cooperate a modern and convenient system into the new settlement. Such goals are accomplished with an organic layout of different units across the site with individual adjustment to the environment and a landscape system reaches into the neighborhood that works with the annual flood of the river nearby.

NEW FRONTIER BETWEEN URBAN AND RURAL INFORMAL SETTLEMENT IN MEDELLIN Site: Medellin, Colombia Date: Sep.2013 to Dec.2013 Advisor: David Gouverneur, David Maestres

By the year of 2030, the number of population living in informal settlements of Medellin will reach 0.95 million with a 0.32 million increase from 2013. Those people, who have very low income and limited assets, are very likely to live as informal settlers at the mountain edge of the city where land has no value and not suitable for construction.

08

The project is to envision the city’s challenge to establish a new development where the informal settlers can carry their identity and be economically independent. Social and environmental problems are both big challenges that directed the design.

The economy structure offers a loop that allows existing and new informal settlers to cooperate with institutions and organize themselves to increase their income. Bases on the structure, master plan is designed to allow the structure work with highest economic value and environment concern.

ACUPUNCTURING READING VIADUCT A NEW DESTINATION Site: Philadelphia Date: Sep.2012 to Dec.2012 Advisor: David Maestres

Reading Viaduct was a major infrastructure in Center City Philadelphia. After the decline of industry in Philadelphia, it was abandoned in 1980s and the surrounding factories it served are now mostly vacant. The area is awaiting regeneration. A rail line used to act as an infrastructure to allow people to pass by, is transformed into a destination for people to stay. The project

is to use the viaduct as open space armature to catalyze urban development with minimum intervention. Specific places are picked as acupuncturing points to stimulate the reaction of a whole system. The viaduct, as the armature of this nerve system, connects to all the acupuncturing points and magnifies the results.

The structure and surrounding context is very different at different segments of the viaduct. 1) On the entrenched segment, open space is created on both viaduct and ground surface to allow maximum pedestrian attraction. 2) On the elevated segment, some direct connections from nearby architecture to viaduct are made. 3) The north end of viaduct is parallel to a regional rail line. A new station is proposed allowing public transportation connection to viaduct.

THE NASH

NASHVILLE ARTS AND SPORTS CENTER Site: Nashville, Tennessee Date: Jan.2014 Advisor: David Gouverneur

As a phased scheme, The NASH brings density to the Sulphur Dell area, forming connections between the new Nashville Sounds baseball stadium, the Cumberland River, the Nashville Farmer’s Market and downtown core. The existing Music City Bikeway frees the street grid. This gesture is maintained and continued in the new open space structure to create a healthy community with easy access to a pedestrian and bikeway system. Integrated into

the open spaces is an ecological flood control system which is graded so water can be absorbed and collected in times of flood, mitigating the flooding risk for surrounding buildings. These open spaces essentially carve out zones where mixed-use programs will create a distinctive community that encourage walking & transit use, respect the rich cultural history of its location, and brings more affordable housing units to the downtown core.

The simulation represents the way of water flows and flooding situations in different levels of rainfall. The areas with cogestion meaning the area can be easily flooded as well as to study how much water can be accumulated in certain area and how long it takes water level to go down. It can be used in design to check the grading.

GIS site study for areas without readily available GIS information. The terrain of a certain place can be transformed from Google Earch to 3D model in Rhino. Using Rhino to AutoCAD files allows GIS to read the data and analysis geological features such as slope, sunshine, view sheds and etc.

A US study showed that benefits would be greater and easier to achieve than reducing to zero the emissions from the petroleum-refining, iron and steel, and aluminum industries.

The frame focuses on the way food is produced, distributed, consumed and disposed of. Smart food systems ensure food safety and high standards of animal health and welfare. They operate within the biological limits of natural resources and priviledge local production, thus reducing transport costs and emissions and supporting rural communities. The production of biofuel and fertilizer from food waste is integrated in the system, thus creating a metabolic cycle of energy and resources . Equally important is to increase awareness among the public, enabling them to make conscious choices that factor food’s economic value, environmental and social cost, quality and wholesomeness .

A 2011 comprehensive evaluation of Xiamen’s overall water quality reported that 44.3% of the total area was considered to be clean. Major pollutants originate from nearby industrial and agicultural waste. Despite recent attempts to restore the local ecosystem, further interventions are necessary in order to improve biodiversity and reduce marine pollution.

Coastal marine planning and ecosystem management involve many different actors and complex processes. A cross-border marine network would provide the tools to coordinate the different institutions and stakeholders and balance economic interest with environmental protection. One of the main strengths of this framework would be to allow to ensure that natural boundaries rather than political borders are considered in the decision making process.

Marine biodiversity provides a surprisingly wide range of good and services, from bioremediation of waste to raw materials, from food supply to improved ecosystem resiliance, to leisure opportunitiies. An international management network will help optimize marine conservation and remediation, weighing out the interests of the stakeholders involved and coordinatining recovery efforts. This would make large-scale projects possible. For example the use of marine electro-stimulation to enhance marine population could be replicated across the Strait, creating a smart marine recovery system that crosses political borders.

Zhongshan Road is the oldest commercial street in Xiamen, with two different characters: the modern and historical city. The street is a place of leisure for citizens and tourists.

The Southeast Asia style arcade buildings in the old city are heritages for Xiamen. They are a good way to show special Southeast Asia culture to visitors. But nowadays some shops transformed the facade of the building, destroying the original style.

Similar kinds of vendors usually gather together and forms different kinds of street markets. Food street markets and clothin markets are the two most popular kinds in Xiamen, some of them open both daytime and night. Some of the big street markets include: JIangtou Business Zone, Malong market, Huli market.
