HIGH-END MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT, DEPARTMENT STORE, RETAIL, AND OFFICE Site: Chongqing, China Date: July.2014 to Now Design Stage: Concept, Schematic, DD(in progress) Design Scope: Ground level landscape, Sunken gardens, Roof gardens, Semi-indoor gardens In the heart of Chongqing, two city blocks are re-developed into a Terrace Garden City. Incorporating multiple floors of a major retail center, hotel, office, and residential towers, the project represents the growing importance of the public realm in urban design. Seven floors of indoor and outdoor garden terraces, plazas, pedestrian bridges, outdoor amphitheater, fountains, cafes, and play areas

are linked to bridge city and garden into a richer urban life. New technologies of light, water, and vertical garden are explored to activate and enliven urban space.

FLUX CITY, SHENZHEN LONGHUA URBAN GREEN VALLEY COMPETITION, LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN, AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN Site: Shenzhen, China Date: February 2015 to April 2015 Design Stage: Competition, Concept Design Design Scope: Landscape Master Plan and Key Area Landscape Design This is a ‘Flux City’, a dynamic gateway of transformation and exchange. This integrated framework incorporates 4 major design principles: * This is a Vertical City, so the landscape must also be vertical, in 3D. Not only on the ground, but in the air on Highlines, in the air on architectural terraces, green roofs, and walls. Integrated with architecture, enveloping the city.

* This is a Sponge City, one which has the capacity to absorb water on multiple levels, and also the capacity to incorporate

ecology on multiple levels. * This is a Heritage City, one that is influence by its historic landscape; where farms, water ponds, and villages inspire a new design vocabulary. * This is a Healthy City, one where Green Corridors inspire walk ability, bike-ability, and livability. One where every trip to work, market, school, or train station is chosen to be outside, through a series of gardens, forest, play areas, and gathering spaces. Where we see our neighbors, our children, and smile.

TONGXI WATERWAY

COMPETITION - AWARDED, 6KM LONG WATERWAY LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Site: Changsha, China Date: July 2014 (competition time, will begin SD stage June 2015) Design Stage: Competition, Concept Design, SD (will start in June 2015) Design Scope: Landscape Master Plan and Key Area Landscape Design A 6 Kilometer canal is carved through mountain, meadow, and stone canyon, linking city and lake. Pedestrian trails, boat taxi, tea house, waterfalls, shopping village, bridges, sky walks, meadow gardens, forest, and wetlands are interwoven into a green and blue tapestry. A deep mountain cut is utilized to improve water quality through a series of re-circulating waterfalls. The canal twist

and turns revealing multiple varying environments from flowering meadow to shady forest.

WATERFRONT RETAIL

MIXED USE WATERFRONT PARCEL LANDSCAPE DESIGN, HOTEL, RETAIL AND WATERFRONT Site: Changsha, China Date: June 2014 to now Design Stage: Concept, Schematic, DD (in progress) Design Scope: Landscape Design Pedestrian-scaled walking streets, alleys, promenade, and garden provide a journey of discovery in a mixed-use waterfront retail center. Anchored by cinema, hotel, marina, and sandy beach, the public realm links a major new open space axis of Changsha to the planned Tongxi Lake. The project incorporates waterfront cafes, a beach bar, overlooks, family play zone, teen entertainment

plaza, and a centered water garden for night shows. A quarry skywalk and waterfall is integrated in the north edge, while overlook piers anchor the east and west promenade.

PLAZA AND WATERFRONT PARKS AS PART OF WATERFRONT LANDSCAPE SYSTEM Site: Changsha, China Date: June 2014 to now Design Stage: DD, CD Review and Construction (in progress) Design Scope: Landscape Design A Weaving network of forest, berm, trail, and wetlands is re-built to re-connect a city to its waterfront. The waterfront incorporates a series of gardens, plazas an amphitheater to provide river views, play and strolling areas. The Gateway Plaza incorporates sculptural gardens, fountain, and forest trails to extend the design vocabulary of the park in the city.

AXIS PARK PARK DESIGN

Site: Changsha, China Date: June 2014 to now Design Stage: DD, CD Review and Construction (in progress) Design Scope: Landscape Design The Changsha axis connects the planned Civic Center (also an SWA project) to the Lake. Containing the strength of axis design with the need to create more intimate people space, the linear park converge adjacent land uses into one unified solution. The forest of the mountain embraces the site to create well-defined edges; within this forest both active and passive space is

influenced by adjacent retail and hotel uses. A central water feature meanders to reflect the nature of Changsha’s rivers, providing a powerful visual feature. This mademade ‘river’ steps down the grade, incorporating waterfalls and framed by an outdoor amphitheater, children’s play areas, cafes, and quiet sculpture gardens.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST

A MODERN VILLAGE DESIGN FOR INDIAN PUEBLO PEOPLE Site: New Mexico Date: Jan.2013 to May.2013 Advisor: Laurie Olin, Tony Atkin

Instead of superimpose an American Levittown model, we set up 3 basic principles at the beginning for designing the new village: first is to cherish the heritage of locate pueblo people, including traditional village settlement pattern, culture custom and life experience; second is to organize the whole community in a subtle yet harmony way towards the vast nature surroundings;

third is to cooperate a modern and convenient system into the new settlement. Such goals are accomplished with an organic layout of different units across the site with individual adjustment to the environment and a landscape system reaches into the neighborhood that works with the annual flood of the river nearby.

NEW FRONTIER BETWEEN URBAN AND RURAL INFORMAL SETTLEMENT IN MEDELLIN Site: Medellin, Colombia Date: Sep.2013 to Dec.2013 Advisor: David Gouverneur, David Maestres

By the year of 2030, the number of population living in informal settlements of Medellin will reach 0.95 million with a 0.32 million increase from 2013. Those people, who have very low income and limited assets, are very likely to live as informal settlers at the mountain edge of the city where land has no value and not suitable for construction.

The project is to envision the city’s challenge to establish a new development where the informal settlers can carry their identity and be economically independent. Social and environmental problems are both big challenges that directed the design.

ACUPUNCTURING READING VIADUCT A NEW DESTINATION Site: Philadelphia Date: Sep.2012 to Dec.2012 Advisor: David Maestres

Reading Viaduct was a major infrastructure in Center City Philadelphia. After the decline of industry in Philadelphia, it was abandoned in 1980s and the surrounding factories it served are now mostly vacant. The area is awaiting regeneration. A rail line used to act as an infrastructure to allow people to pass by, is transformed into a destination for people to stay. The project

is to use the viaduct as open space armature to catalyze urban development with minimum intervention. Specific places are picked as acupuncturing points to stimulate the reaction of a whole system. The viaduct, as the armature of this nerve system, connects to all the acupuncturing points and magnifies the results.

The structure and surrounding context is very different at different segments of the viaduct. 1) On the entrenched segment, open space is created on both viaduct and ground surface to allow maximum pedestrian attraction. 2) On the elevated segment, some direct connections from nearby architecture to viaduct are made. 3) The north end of viaduct is parallel to a regional rail line. A new station is proposed allowing public transportation connection to viaduct.

DIGITAL FABRICATION

Experiment the different organizations from basic geometry to test out how abstract forms can be expressed in designing physical landscapes. The terrain is expressed with different texture captured from CNC milling to represent different planting conditions and possibilities of water flowing.

Using GIS as tool to experiment the site selection for certain projects and finding potential influential zone.
