The Interactive Diagnostic Umbrella
Concept: When a normal umbrella opens, it disconnects us with nature, by blocking the sun, wind and rain. Group1’s umbrella will reverse the traditional role of a umbrella, by opening the umbrella, it will allow us to reconnect with nature and when closing it, it will create shadows on the users bodies that informs them of the particular health propoerties of sunlight.
Function: Solar Shading,health shadow body projection, encourage more people to use the courtyard.
How it Protects Nature: Umbrella protects nature by two different ways. firstly the umbrella is fabricated with fully bio-degradable natural materials that are environmentally friendly to the planet, and secondly, by making us more aware of the health benefits of sunlight, we will be more positive about nature and be more aware of the damages we are doing to nature.

Site Location
The top structure without any glass
Site is in the centeral courtyard of Department. There are four trees in the courtyard to provide some shadow. The courtyard is cylinder with a structure top which seems like the open umbrella It is a quite open and sunny space with great ventilation In order to make the courtyard utilized more efficently, the design intend to give more shadow in the courtyard, and the shadow space could be controlled flexible by users.
One corner of the courtyard, very sunny and no one is willing to staying there. It is not good enough for resting now. The staircase is a loop, going up around the courtyard, connected each floor. It is around 20 meters high from courtyard groud to roof structure

Central Supporting Structure
The bamboo go through the column structure, using Ropes to tight on one side to make it stable.
The central supporting structure, using a very thick bamboo section as the column. In the beginning, we drill eight holes at the same level, inserted the small bamboo sticks and then put the big ones on. ( Figure 1 and 2) Then we found the structure is very vulnerable and unbalance due to the differnt arm length.
