WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. Answer: The three elementary types of developable surfaces are: - Cylinders: cylinders are solid which consist a set of parallel straight lines, we can make a surface of the cylinders by prescribing a profile curve and extrude it in any direction by a parallel extrusion. - Cones: cones have one sole vertex point that consist of many lines which are all end at a given profile curve. - tangent surfaces of space curves: tangent surfaces of space curves are polygons with set vertices, whereby two consecutive vertices make the edges of the polygon and three consecutive vertiexs make up its surfaces.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. Answer: It is significant to recognise the importance of the developable surfaces when we start to construct a place which is safe, unique and full of imagination. the surfaces can determine the final image of your building and different surfaces will creat variable look of your constuction, so the surfaces are meaningful to the buildings. Take Cloud canopy by Maddison as a example of showing the importance of develpoable surface. we can image the developed view of the buiding when we consider it is seperatable.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? Answer: Digital fabrication is a way to represent the generative form by computers like traditional drawing. this techenique minimize the gap between the design and the actural making proccesses of production or construct the buiding you have drawn. Three- dimentional modelling offers architectors to think out of the plan views or out of paper, thet can clearly know how the object look like. However, the twodimentional representation cannot change some tiny problems as we have done the drawing.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? Answer: Folding offers people to make 3D models from 2D surfaces by precising geometry to creat complex and unique structures. Folding can use materials like papers which are cheap, eco-friendly and easy to do hand-making and this is also a effective way for engineer to build structures or make some changes on the structures.
