HOW TO DRAW A CROISSANT? /P3

FLATNESS vs. PROJECTION /P6

PATTERN vs. SURFACE /P9

FRAME vs. FIELD /P12

M1 MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT How to measure a Croissant? The aim of this module is to draw the axonometric view of the croissant. To achieve this purpose, we need to take some pictures of the selected croissant from different views, which are plan view and elevation views, then we need to photocopy the cut sections and the bottom of the croissant. By overlaying a tracing paper onto the photos, we can easily draw the croissant with some drawing techeniques. when we start to draw the axonometric view of it, the sections should keep 45 degree to the horizontal line. From this module, I have learnt how to use PhotoShop and Indesign to adjust the pictures and how to draw 3d model from several plan views.

NEW MARIO WORLD The making of new Mario world. During the whole process from the two mario pictures to the projection, I have learnt a lot from this module. Firstly, I tried my best to learn how to use illustrator and indesign which are two software I have never used before, I met some trouble at the beginning of adding colours into the images, however I solved those problems in a short time and started to focus on the creativity of the base, style and concept of my mario world. I chose the concept of “city-of-sky” which is full of music element because I hope this “city” can spread music to all the places in this world so that people can enjoy the music and full of happiness everyday.

M3 PAPER LANDSCAPE The making of new landscape In this module, i have used 3 different panels to make the final model, there are 60 3D units and 40 2D units respectively, which creat a image of Chinese knot. Actually, this model takes a lot of time to finish. I think the most important part in this model is how to creat the panels creatively and how to use the 2d panels efficiently, after that, we can use the unrollsrf command to make the 2d surfaces which can print to papers to make 3d panel by hand.

9

USE OF 2D PANELLING TOOLS

The unit pattern is a consist of triangles and curves. when I make this 2D panel, I choose two adjacent curves as the attract curves and the units become smaller when they near the two curves.

2d Panelling, Pattern: Wave

The unit is a combinaton of 5 squares and make it looks full of abstraction. In this 2D panelling, I choose two opposite lines as attract curves.

2d Panelling, Pattern: Dense

10

The unit pattern is a star with a circumcircle. I use the rotate command and make these units rotate between 0-90 degrees.

2d Panelling, Pattern: Triangular

Cities & signs 4: Hypatia

INVISIBLE CITY [Hypatia] Hypatia is a city have a lot of different scenes, there are lots of mood changes during the journy in this city for the reason that there are some view are not the same as the Marco Polo images. For example, he wonder he will see some young and beautiful ladies bathing, however, crabs are biting the eyes of the suicides. This is a main scene of this city and I have put it at the beginning of the entrance in two different view to show two opposit views. There are three main character in this city which are philosopher, smoker and convict. The convict give the chance for Marco to saw the smoker and the smoker give the direction of how to find the philosopher. This isometric view clealy shows the pathway of Marco Polo by with different speed which is illutrated by the alterd step symbols. Also, this view represent the contrast of light and heavy mood intuitively after the staring or glance to some scenes. Futhermore, there is a garden in this scene, so this part is marked by the light place symbol. Key Staring Glance Fast Step Slow Step Light place People Mood(L&H) 0

FIRST PERSPECTIVE VIEW: IMAGINATION

Annotation. I choose this scene to be the first perspective is mainly bacause it is the entrance of Marco Polo and from this direction, most of characters can be seen in this view which can highly illustrate the structure of the Old Quad.

Annotation First, when Macro came into this city, a lagoon is the first object he has noticed. there are some cloths between the lagoon and chair which can image there may be some young anf beautiful ladies bathing. Then, there is another small contrast which is the hedges and the iron gratings in the middle.Besides the iron grating, convicts are working. The fountains is a sign of this city because he has mentioned there are six fountains in this city. Furthermore, the window is a transition of the story, from the inside to outside garden.

13

SECOND PERSPECTIVE VIEW: REALITY

Annotation This is a side view of my Old Quad and the reason why I choose this location as my second view is that due to the isometric view, Marco Polo passed the middle part three times so there are lots of important characters in this section.

Annotation In this view, we can clealy notice that behide the flowers, crabs are biting the suicides’ eyes so this is a clealy contrast between positive imagine and negative reality. A library is represented by the bookshelf and wallpaper, a smoker in front of the shelf give the direction to find the philosopher, who is in the corner of this view.

REFLECTION The experience of studying course Foundation of Design: Representation is unfogettable though it always takes long time to finish the module work. Actually, I am a student who did not use the computer before so it was very difficult for me to follow the process of workshops but the using of computer is one of the key techeniques we should have. At the beginning of this course, I spend a long time on how to use computer and the command in different softwares and it waste a lot of working time. With the time passing, I can use computer quicker than before and familiar with using

is a assessment which takes the longest time in all modules, we need take a long time on folding the papers to 3d model, in this work, I learnt how to use the panelling tools in Rhino, however, I did not pay attention to the design of the panels so I did not get a satified mark in the end. The last module need the skill of using PhotoShop and Illustrator a lot but I am not very familiar with using these softwares. In the furture studies, I will pay more attention on individual skill in the region of computer and make more effort 15

on the creativity of my assessment.
