First let me say innovators, oh how i have been waiting to reconnect with you to talk about this shady ass year 2020. This year has been a handful for the world but we are not here to complain. We are here to show you and help our business owners and future entrepreneurs make this the best pandemic of your lives. We are going to show you how to make 2021 work for you. Pink is the color of healing and right now we are all in need of just that. The last year and a half has delivered so many trials, deaths, and unnecessary mishaps. XI is determined to make the best of an unpleasant situation by shining light on our readers on what it really takes to keep your daily life going, even through the struggle while also shedding light on positive people in our community. We are also excited to announce our newest feature, Pinky Killacorn! Pinky shared her story with us and shed light on her future projects. N I K O O L H BCU Howard University recently announced the legendary Alumna Phylicia Rashad as Dean of the new, reestablished College of Fine Arts. The entire DC metropolitan area is elated to have Dean Phylicia Rashad apart of the area and the program. Way to go Howard University!

HBCUs have recently won a case granting schools like Morgan State University, Coppin State University and Bowie State University money from a years long law suite that showed these schools lack funds given to create sufficient programs for students to receive a competitive education compared to white schools.

Natalie Hopkinson, Ph.D., and was appointed by Mayor Bowser as the D.C Arts and Humanities Commissioner. She previously shared on her personal Instagram page her gratitude for the new position and explained how her cultural dynamics have grown her to appreciate the Arts as a whole.

Black entrepreneurship on the rise Bowie State University recently started hosting Black Innovator talks sponsored by Echoing Green, a panel discussion of Echoing Greens Black Male Achievement fellowship program members from a diaspora of fields like media, funding, tech, social and business. The theme of the discussions ranged from developing new ways to find connections across sectors and disciplines to support black entrepreneurs,” according to Damia Chambers, journalist of Bowie State University.

MENTAL HEALTH

Self checks are important because it delays your reaction into a response. Reacting and responding are two different things. Reacting will have you spazzing out as soon as someone tells you something you don’t want to hear. Responding will allow you to process the words you hear before you speak and in return help you gather your thoughts to decide if what is being said even needs a response. Not only does this give you control to decide, it will also grant you control over your emotions. Emotions can be a dangerous weapon, if too fragile it can get tricky. Think of your emotions as earth and water. The body is earth and your emotions, well that is water. If not tended to tsunamis and floods occur. The same goes for yourself and emotions. If someone is not tending to the healing portion of your triggers at some point you will explode with anger or out of fear. Controlling and recognizing your feelings is not always easy. That is why talking about your feelings is so important. Whether you talk to a therapist or a good listening friend therapist or write in your journal, get those thoughts and feelings out and off of your chest, mind and body. When we speak on things we allow our voices and perspectives to be

When life seems like it is taking over the most important thing to do is stop then breathe. Stopping will give you a moment to calm down. Breathing will help you gather your thoughts. Take this time to think to yourself and talk to yourself about how you feel. I call this a stillness, self check.

Your inner thoughts are our most sacred tools of creation but many times our thoughts can get out of control. When they do practice meditation. Yes, our ideas are important and show our different levels of thinking but sometimes we need to quiet our minds. Meditation is not always sitting down for an hour being still. We meditate every time we take a moment and breathe. If you do have time, find a comfy spot to lie down or sit up in an indian style position and just be. Breathe, let your thoughts pass and simply exist. Another way to meditate is to get active and do things you love to do! Whether dancing, traveling or being with family. Lastly set a goal and reach it! It is proven that when a person accomplishes a milestone goal dopamine hormones are released from your pineal gland that make you happy! This feeling is supposedly better than sex and longer lasting than an orgasm.

Pinky Killacorn is one of the hottest female MC’s in the region. A growing seed from Northeast, Washington D.C she has graced the stage with moguls like Erykah Badu and has created a plan that will continue her music while building a branding empire as her foundation. Pinky grew up around the Georgia Avenue and Petworth area in the Northwest side of Washington, D.C. “I went to Seaton Elementary, I went to Shaw Junior High and just tore my whole school down, I went to Dunbar High School then I got put out of DC Public schools then I went to a lot of charter schools, I got my GED,” says Pinky.

As a child she felt misunderstood and got into a lot of fights and disagreements with students but eventually she learned to cope with her anger through writing poetry in elementary school, “I write so I don’t fight,” says Killacorn. She chose to be a better version of herself in her growing years and earned her spot in the music industry. Raising her vibration from a troubled teen, her music has served as therapy to her mind and her sound has spread across the region,”I love Pinky’s style and music and her concerts whether big or small are always lit!”, says a local listener.

You can also always count on Pinky KillaCorn for fun, colorful, visuals and retro fashion to go along with her unique sound. With videos like Up N’ Up, Aint Gotta Lie and Smoke When I Wanna you can clearly grasp the carefree, vibrant energy Pinky expresses through her style and music.

Other than style and music KillaCorn is actively building her branding empire as she recently released her sea moss smoothie collection Groovy Smoothie. These smoothies feature delicious flavors of fruit concocted with the base of natural sea moss. Even though she’s an advocate for her cannabis, she also has a goal to balance her health style with exercise, a healthy eating regimen and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As you can see in the 2017 I AM DC cypher, Pinky single womanly holds down an all male cypher representing all parts of the D dot C. Unlike many women in the industry Pinky expresses that she does not think it is a challenge being a woman in the music industry. “I don’t put myself in the category of just women, I’m an artist. In the beginning back in the day the ratio of male and female artists were different but it just made me be the best I could be because I gotta be better than I was last year,” says Killacorn.

“I love styles from the 70’s, the style, the colors, you can tell what they have on. Just like I dress, expressing yourself.”

Pinky KillaCorn is musically influenced by a dynamic range of artists that have one thing in common, being original. Inspired by artists like Erykah Badu, Backyard Band, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, she appreciates how those artists influence her by just being them. “I like artists that stay true to themselves and I can feel what they are saying. I like crank, groovin’ and feelin it. Like what I recently did in my previous album. BLM If no one is going to say it, I will. Black Lives Matter is just another means to propagandize the black life more than actually helping a black life. I already know a majority of you reading this article will either go against my statement or want to hear more, so here the facts. Over the last year the Black Lives Matter movement has proved to be more of a business than a movement. Wordly marches have happened on account of actual black people losing their lives and yet BLM or should we say BLMGN has yet to create 0 legal changes in the system that control or even minimize the behaviors of law enforcement initiated by BLM or compensated scorned families as retribution. They represent righteous treatment of black people by the hands of the law through protest but are not actually helping to redirect the violence and poverty line that could help decrease black on black crimes, hunger and even police brutality. With all of the traction and followers still there has been no concrete contract or plan that has the intentions of protecting black lives or the rights of black lives. The black lives matter movement has received $90,000,000 in funds that have not been distributed towards black people or black families or black lives at all.

At first these were just rumors until I did my own research. Scattering through the internet and articles brought me upon a random white woman on the internet who nicely exposes a website that allows one to follow all monetary reports that have to do with political donations and expenses. Now, this website led me to find the financial expenditures for ACT BLUE. Who the hell is Act Blue you ask? Well, if you go to the website blacklivesmatter.com and then press donate there are terms and conditions. These terms and conditions tell the donors who their money is streaming through. So Act Blue is a third party charity carrier for political campaigns. Facts, saying the slogan “Black Lives Matter” is the perfect hashtag that doesn’t take too much time in your day to write but also shows there is some grief in your heart. The saying black lives matter has proved to be just that, a saying which has become a trend. With all of the movements around the world for black lives, black lives continue to suffer daily. From community poverty to police

BLMGN shootings that haunt the black community these things are still happening everyday and honestly nothing has changed. Zero legislation has been put in place to protect the rights of black people, no laws have been passed and settlements for black lives are being passed out like hot cakes. Everyday black people are forced to see the letters BLM all over the world yet treated in the opposite manner. We are forced to be reminded that black life is not revered at all. We see it through art, marches and just seeing plain old racism and discrimination happening in everyday life. We see these things all over the world and yet nothing but the minds of some people are shifting. The BLMGN movement has become a worldwide trend so why hasn’t there been a black agenda presented to congress or even the Mayor. There has not been one black life changed from the support of black lives matter movement and no black agenda created. If you dive deep behind any movement you will come to understand that an effective movement has a multi-tier of things happening simultaneously. As we witnessed in the civil rights movement from the 60’s and 70’s everyone played a different

part that powered towards one cause. The church shared information for people to connect to politicians that were aligned on the issue at hand. Those leaders were bringing out the masses to show support behind a new mindset and a new legislation and justice was served. Now that the black community is looking for a way out so to speak, it is time for the tiers to be organized. We all need to play our part toward a common goal. If we do that, we win and when we win the world wins. Collaborating the world’s trauma under the slogan, black lives matter only buries the issue of black lives not mattering. The black conversation gets redirected and eventually never heard. Black Lives Matter Global Network raised $90 million after Geoge Floyd uprisings. Recently it was revealed that Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Global Network has purchased multiple million dollar homes in addition to her and her wife’s other owned ranches and properties. This raises questions from the community and from the families of the victims that made face for the BLMGN Community such as George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and many other police brutality victims.

GO-GO

On February 19, 2020 go-go music became the official music of Washington, DC.

On this sacred day for the go-go community Mayor Bowser signed the official bill at the Culture house in Southwest, Washington, DC. This monumental moment has given D.C natives a new voice, and a new wave for opportunities that expand possibilities of what can be achieved in the city.

In early April 2019 a major issue arose as new community members, also known as gentrifiers attempted to mute the go-go sound that has been playing for years outside the Shaw Metro PCS. This demand stirred up the natives of Washington D.C which in return created a movement, and the birth of Don’t Mute D.C campaign. Natives felt compelled to save the authentic sound of the city. After the word got out to community activists like Ronald Moten, Tony Lewis, Natalie Hopkinson and original members of various go-go bands in the city they got together with a plan and then the peaceful go-go protests began.

Go-go is the authentic sounds. It represents the history, strength and foundation of the Natives of the District of Columbia!

Finally, the city was united through music and working together for a synonymous community issue, keeping go-go alive. The unity created was then used to legally placelaw, rights and bills surrounding the sound. This movement will be in history books for new community members and natives to learn all about the legendary sound of Go-go. So what does this mean for D.C and how far will the sound take the city? Well, many natives have been excited about hearing go-go in the airports upon arrival to give an entire feel of what the city represents or implementing the go-go sound into education for children to learn. Ronald Moten, a major catalyst for go-go

since the early 1990’s, has plans to open a go-go museum and cafe in the heart of historic Anacostia at Check IT Enterprises which highlight Chuck Brown, notorious go-go bands and go-go memories so the city can always have a replica of the history go-go front the root. Go-go is the authentic sounds. It represents the history, strength and foundation of the Natives of the District of Columbia. The drums activate our people and the melodies express the creative sensations our city produces.

COLLEGE LIFESTYLE

There has been a lot of talk about the HBCU community not receiving basic funds for university needs. It is known that HBCU’ s make up 31% of colleges and universities and only produce 30% of black students with bachelor degrees.

Recently a 13-year old federal law suite has finally come to a head settling between four HBCU schools, Morgan State University, Coppin State University, Bowie University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, granting them $580 million over a 10-year span. These universities were being under cut from funding while programs were being shut down and replaced by universities with white counterparts. The money is supposed to establish new programs and invest in under-enrolled programs at the universities, more scholarships, financial aid programs, new faculty and new training. With all of these new great ideas, has the question aroused why this “mistake” happened in the first place? And the second question that should be asked is does the settlement between the schools enough money for each school to establish their goals to be able to have fair play with white colleges? Honestly, I don’t think it is. The amount granted to all the colleges from the court still did not even come close to

being equivalent to what our white college and university counterparts are receiving in one donation. Collectively the four main HBCU schools only received $577 million dollars to split between 4 HBCUs. Now, forgive me sounding “ungrateful” but what in the world are 4 HBCU schools supposed to do with $577 million dollars split over a course of years? Which if I am adding correctly equals an even smaller $144,250,000 for each university to walk away with. Now the fact does stand that this money is supposed to create upgraded resources to less popular major programs to stimulate its growth and also suppose to grant more financial aid to more students. Now just from a couple google searches I was able to find out that other white school couter-parts humbly receive consecutive donations of over a million dollars all the time, multiple times a year. So, let’s ask the important question, why is there a funding gap when it comes to HBCU schools versus white schools?

How to save while surviving 5 easy tips to start your financial prosperity!

Step 1:

Gather your bills and face the wrath! It will seem hard at first but trust, once you take control of your finances you take control of your life. Sit down and gather all of your debt, then gather all of your income. Compare and contrast so you can see your spending, decide your cutbacks and figure out a side hustle to help fill the financial gap.

Step 2:

Sign up to a free credit.karma account. This will give you first hand insight for your credit score. Your credit score is a very important part of your finances. Without credit one can not obtain substantial things like purchasing a house, car or able to act under emergency circumstances.

Step 3:

Organize and write down your income and outcome. The amount of money you bring in is an important thing when it comes to controlling your finances, it shows you where you may be abundant and where you may lack financially for your budget. It also shows you how much you can actually afford. Keeping track of the amount of money you spend is also important because it shows you where your money is going on a daily basis which will give you more control rather than blind spending.

Step 4:

Create a budget. Get a journal or download a budget app on your phone, reference back to that budget every week. Become familiar with your spendings. After you write your bills down take time to contact each service provider, find out what day out of the month your bills are due. Write down the date beside the bill so that you can be aware of when to pay on your accounts or sign up for automatic bill payments.

Step 5:

Split payments into two payments throughout the month. Make your first half payment before the due date and make the second payment on the actual due date. The most important part of this process is convicting your payments before your due date or on your due date. Splitting your bills is one method that can help increase your credit score and keep you financially flexible, if you do it right. Remember the key to raising your credit score is to ultimately pay your bill in full by your bills due date. If you are not able to pay it is important to communicate with your bill collectors about the status of your payment. You can also ask for an extension depending on the status of your account. Your credit is the key that opens the doors to living a life of options and security. Try out these techniques to get started.

and the Phases of Change I made it to my first protest held on what is now known as black lives matter blvd in Northwest, Washington, D.C. The night of May 30, 2020 was dark and the energy of the crowd matched the sky. Hundreds of police surrounded peaceful protesters, screaming for justice or talking one on one to police that were directed to take any precautions necessary to “keep the peace” that was already being presented.

The walls of businesses were filled with quotes like “God is watching”, and “Make the rich pay”. The energy was on fire for justice for the murder of not only George Floyd but every culture suffering by the hands of our political government. Hearing the voices of this protest and riots were sounds of cries and desperate measures to find a solution to a complication that eats away within the body of America; racism. Some say racism is a distraction created to sway black people from their true God purpose, others say racism is a systematic paradigm created to pretty much profit off of the humanity and culture of others. Either way it is real and living in the minds of many people living in the world today and these days unlike many others, that shit is being checked.

Checked means when a racist says something out of line, they will receive one of the following responses or reactions; 1.Intellectually cursed out, which means you will feel the wrath of the words but they wont have four letters, 2. The person speaking wreckless will be hit in some sort of way or have an emotional reaction or 3. You will get cursed out.

This generation checked the police like no other generation has before from screaming that black lives matter to having a fuck the police stripper show front and center between the 2 front lines of the police and the people. Either way messages are being heard and change is upon us! And the change has been catalyzed through the youth. The frontlines were flooded with college students, angry and upset about the recorded, unjust murder of George Floyd. Now here we are an entire year later in 2021 and names of black civilians dying at the hands of police officers are still being added to the list and names will continue to be added until racism is uprooted from the foundations of America and filters hate through unified younger generations to come.

For years Americans have been taught to fight for the political party that fits the needs of citizens at best. We have also been brainwashed to believe that one party is better than another or have separate agendas. When the truth is, both parties are fighting for one Republic, and that is the Republic of the United States of America. Now we all know politics are long and drawn out but lets breeze back through history and touch the most important facts. A long time ago, according to Jean Jacques Dessalines, Haiti soldiers “Avenged America” and secured Haiti’s independence from France in 1804 establishing the Haitian Declaration of Independence. After that the Black Republic and Black Law stunned both black and white people in America and inspired black people in the western hemisphere to strive for black freedom. This also inspired our forefathers in their creation of the Republic we live in today. Now, let us fast forward to 1828 when the first Democratic-Republican party of the United States was born. Now we are all familiar with our forefathers of this great nation, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams also known as The Federalists. These men wanted to make sure the U.S had a strong government and central banking system with a national bank but their friends Thomas Jefferson and James Madison instead advocated

for a smaller and more decentralized government, and from there they formed the Democratic-Republicans. Eventually shade began to arise when the presidential election of 1824 happened. During the election of 1824 John Quincy Adams won the presidency, in spite of Andrew Jackson winning the popular vote (Doesn’t this sound familiar?). Well anyway this sparked a strong political division within the party, which eventually caused the Democatic-Republic party to split into separate parties; The Democrats and the Whig Party. See, John Quincy Adams represented the democrats and was against building the banking system. He believed in largely supporting state’s rights and minimal government regulation while his counterparts, George, Alex and John were all for building a banking system in support of their idea of a national bank. Clearly these men had different perspectives on how to run the country.

Abraham Lincoln eventually came in the picture and shook things up. His push of anti-slavery awakened many minds which led democrats and whig members and other politicians to migrate into the Republican party which was based upon an anti-slavery platform. The new republican party was surely thriving until the Great depression hit. Many are not aware that there were 150 members of the republican party and a majority of the members were black. In fact it was promoted through propaganda that the democratic party was for whites only while the republicans were represented in negative illustrations of black figures on campaign posters. Democrats actually threatened many black republicans to switch political sides due to the progress the republican experienced in a society that was majority black and had influence on the nation. Now that we know the background of these two ideal establishments it should be clear that ultimately these two parties are on the same team but

presented to the people as separate. The only difference between these two entities are their personal beliefs of how a nation should be conducted in their favor. These two parties have one agenda in the end and that is supplying their financial needs as the wealthy 1% and operators of the law of the land and protecting the republic of their government at all cost. We also have seen this with John Quincy Adams and Donald Trump, winning the election despite the popular vote. This leads us back to the question of who represents the people? Are our leaders just playing political games to suit the people of the nation or just the nation itself? Since before the establishment of this nation in 1828 our black ancestors have been fighting for freedom yet set in a trap from birth which dwindles each generation down more and more through time. It is time to figure out how to create a system of our own just as the forefathers of the great American nation. It is time to create a system we the people can operate that satisfies the needs of our future generations, innovations and thought progression.

The Pinky Parlay was a creative shoot our team orchestrated to pay homage to DMV’s own artist Pinky KillaCorn.

We chose to use the, Ida McKinley Suite at the Washington Riggs Hotel in Northwest, Washington, DC because it fullfiled the 70’s vintage vibe Pinky loves so much!

Ida McKinley was inspired to decorate the room in flowers from her habit of carrying a bouquet of flowers to avoid shaking hands with others at appearances. As the room is dazzled in flowers with a variety of shades like pink, and purple, we were inspired to give Pinky her Flowers while she is still here. We also thought it would be a great opportunity to shoot a historical artist in a historical location.
