Guangzhou and Its Suburbs in 1930

Guangzhou lies at the confluence of two navigable rivers of the Zhujiang (‘Pearl’) River system. The city was founded as a water based fortress and has developed along water during last 2000 years. Since the population explosion in 19080s, which came together with rapid economic urbanization overturned the urban-rural structure. Massive urbanization led to the systematic filling of waterways and fast expansion of the city, which brought two negative results to this city, urban flooding and Villages in the City (ViCs). The remaining ViCs are primarily located to the east and south, dispersed atop the alluvial plain. A great number of villages are on Haizhu Island (meaning ‘pearl on the sea’ and located between the upper and lower branches of the Zhujiang River). Guangzhou expansion occurred east of the historical centre and is defined by a monumental north-south axis along which major amenities of the city (sport infrastructure, shopping malls, museum and so forth) are located. urbanization 1860 urbanization 1984 urbanization 1998

The particular location and soil conditions of Haizhu, combined with the northern subtropical climate evidently led to the agricultural exploitation of the landscape. The territory was covered by a dense network of villages, agricultural fields and large domains of orchards. Educational institutions initiated urban development of the island, and from the 1950s onwards, Haizhu became a major industrial area. Agriculture almost vanished from Haizhu and urban development took over almost the entire fertile island. Only an important domain of orchards now remains, while the villages have become ViCs.

The agricultural village Li Jiao, located in the south of Haizhu andembedded within the riverine wetlands of the lower branch of theZhujiang River, is some 800 years old. Sugar cane and bananas were important products. The settlement pattern of Li Jiao was originally anchored on andintrinsically linked to a water structure that connected it with the lower branch of the Zhujiang River, and gave it access to Haizhu’s fertile plain.

DESIGN Concept However Today, unfortunately, this rich, water-based settlement pattern is impoverished through the systematic filling of the water bodies, the village inhabitants are dependent on land-based means of transport. The formal urban development that surrounds the village is strikingly distinct from theorganic, rich settlement pattern. On collective lands between Li Jiao’soriginal boundaries and the formal urban area, the village has be enable to develop its own industrial zone, which is an important incomegenerating device for the original village community as compensationfor the loss of the fertile agricultural fields.

WORLD PLASTIC PRODUCTION

EUROPE PLASTIC PRODUCTION

The progrome, WOW, is a mobile production unit which roams around Hackney Wick and its surrounding areas. It encourages collective production in situ, using local resources, knowledge and reclaimed material. Plastic is chosen as the main material. Ever since plastic was invented, the world/ european production was consistantly increased during the last century and is commonly seen in our daily.

Light infrastructures for comprehensive path movement

PATH SYSTEM IN GRORUDDALEN

2700m, 35min

GRORUDDALEN, OSLO

Groruddalen is dominated by car. Alna River, a valuable nature resource at valley floor, is isolated from the other landscape elements. The journey from the forest edge to the floor is time-consuming and unpleasant. The idea of Forest to Floor is a light infrastructure for comprehensive path movement, which proposes a simple solution that needs only one person and three machines to reduce the 1/6 path length and the accessibility of valley floor will be remarkably improved.

HOVIBYEN -WHERE PEOPLE MEET City and Town district A green heart which transform a car donminating industrial area to a pedestrian friendly neighbourhood.

FRAMEPICTURE FOR HOVINBYEN

GRORUDDALEN, OSLO

Hovin town was originally an agricultural area and its name is composed of hof(worship) and wine. To reappearing the missing traditional quality of meeting place in today’s massive development of industry, a green heart is established to diverse social activities such as urban farming, harvest center and local market, with its branches extend into the residential area and provide a path system. Public transportation and bike rental facilities will step by step take over the dominating place of private car.

PARSON X EXCHANGE Public Realm

A community network for exchanging ideas, aspirations and dreams.

FRAMEPICTURE FOR HOVINBYEN

PARSON CROSS, SHEFFIELD

The area of Parson Cross has experienced a string of regeneration following numerous examples of engagement and community involvement. In order to communicate with a wider network of community groups, ideas relating to the development of an area, we as designers tapped into our skills to generate a range of proposals through conversations and interactive surveys with local residents. The Parson X Exchange

...Created following conversations and interactive surveys...

We found that our proposals, created following, could become a form of currency for use in discussions relating to future development. A document of “What Ifs?”, a polite provocation, which seeks to tease out pent up opinion and capture it in an informal way. Each “what if?”, generated from discussions with local people, became part of each chapter within the scrapbook. A Scrapbook of Ideas

To contextualise these proposals, we put into action quick feasible ideas. These ideas include: - 3D Notice Board to display current ideas and proposals and encourage users participation in the building - Chalk paving leading to the ambiguous entrance of SOAR works to create a clear path and raise awareness of the building - Facebook page as a platform to allow individuals in the community to view, discuss and propose aspirations
