Small: When I think of my philosophical underpinnings as a designer, I feel the most kinship with Rem Koolhaas. He points out, architecture “is a hazardous mixture of omnipotence and impotence, ostensibly involved in ‘shaping’ the world”, but how does the world shape architecture? Industrial Revolution, World Wars, Electricity, Internet, Globalization, events all occurred densely in the past 120 years, during which architecture underwent massive mutation. Although he has also pointed out “The more architecture mutates, the more it confronts its immutable core”, yet I’m not daring to solely search for the “immutable core”, I just want to see how architecture mutates.

Cold Mountain Adaptive Reuse of Banaux House into an Arthouse Cinema

“Where there is nothing, everything is possible;

When there is architecture, nothing is possible. “

Imaginging Metropolis Nothingness “What more important than the design of architectures is the design of their decay”. As big cities grow, aged buildings are being abandoned – their out of dated attached infrastructural equipment no longer satisfies updated needs – rapidly, too rapid for a thorough purge, thus lots of tiny emptiness merged downtown in the past century. Like a set of void in metropolis crowded context, emptiness in metropolis is not empty though, that each void can be used for every program as an effort for insertion of diversity that stands out in both urban activity and texture. Cold Mountain, the project that adaptively reuse of Banaux House into an Arthouse Cinema, was previously a void in metropolitan solid, however, a valuable one. Banaux House was built by Russian noble Banaux Brothers during conquer colonization in the early 1900s, and has become an exotic architectural landscape where archipelago of other exotic architectural islands floats, which, as aging, gradually grew into a highly charged nothingness: the old brick and wood amalgam ended up in ruin simply because they are no longer needed, physically, while emotionally they are carrying memories of generations of residents, and has been regarded as nostalgia symbol of the city’s prosperous ages long before rotten. That’s why Banaux House is the part deserves reinforcement, not destruction.

Hankow Concession District Historical Heritage District “Oriental Chicago”

Hankou, alternately romanized as Hankow, was one of the three towns (and Wuchang, Hanyang) merged to modern Wuhan city, the capital of the Hubei province, China. It stands north of the Han and Yangtze Rivers where the Han flows into the Yangtze. Hankow Concession, located between Zhongshan Avenue and Yanjiang Avenue in Jiang’an District, Wuhan City, is the collective name of English, Russian, French, German, Japanese Concession, Belgian Concession. At the beginning of the 20th century, Hankou had become an international metropolis of considerable scale, known as “Oriental Chicago”.

Development of Concession Timeline of Concession Expansion

English Concession | 1856

The first to force a concession in Hankou was the United Kingdom. Beginning in the sixth year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1856 AD), Britain and France launched the second Opium War, forcing Qing court open up ten trading ports including Hankou.

Russian & French Concession | 1897

In the 22nd year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1897), Russia and France asked the Qing government to jointly choose a region in Hankou and establish their concessions.

Belgian Concession | 1897

There was a Belgian privately purchasing land. In 1897, Qing government signed a contract, with excuse he bought private lands.

German Concession | 1903 The year after Russia and France, German set up a concession in Hankou. It is required to be below but not adjacent to the British concession.

Japanese Concession | 1906

The Japanese Consulate is located in Riverside Hotel.

Architectural Strategy

05. New RC-Structure

Practical Architectural Movements of Adaptively Reusing Banaux House

01.Open An Entrance

Take away the tower of Small Banaux for a entrance ground, and save place for later film poster billboard. The angle will serve as main entrance of Banaux House. Cut an opening at the southern part of Banaux House, serving as a secondary entrance.

02.Integrate Altrium

Remove the joint of Small Banaux and Large Banaux so that the two altriums are connected to create a larger space for various activities. At first this bridge is a barrier between two parts of Banaux House, to indicate which part specifically belonged to who of the two brothers. However, this construction greatly affected lighting quality of both altriums, making them dark and humid.

Previous structures of Banaux House are wood frame with brick and cement, which has rotted after more than a century’s aging. Place it with solid Steel Reinforced Concrete frame, so the building now can be qualified as a public-used building. The connecting bridge part is supported by steel frame.

03.Remove Blocks

06. New Roof

Take away two floors of the western part of Small Banaux so people can see the eastern side of it, where the roof situates, from the busy Baqi-Conference Site Street; remove one floor of Large Banaux for better lighting in the altrium. The altrium is twice as large as before, serving as a public space, lighting quality is important. Also, when peoplw are inside it, the sense of narrow will not be so strong as before.

04.Remove Floors

The original floor heights is 3 meters, that’s why its rooms are always dark, dense, crowded, this is also caused by construction technologies at that time. However, floor heights of 3 meters is obviously not suitable for public buildings, so take away one of each two floor plates, that is previously floor plates of 2 and 4 floor. With this movement, Small Baunaux has 6 meters floor height, considering sewege, vacinity, hitting, air conditioning equipment taking up part of the height, this floor height is a typical floor height for a public commercial building.

Xinwei Guo | xinwei_guo@outlook.com

The newly-added roof is a strong architectural volcabulary, in strong contradiction with old red brick wall, as a manifesto of Banaux House’s reborn. Appearancely, RC plates, glazing, steel window frame is used to create a sense of snowy mountaion, that’s why the project is given a name “Cold Mountain”. Functionally, under the roof are all film-related programs, while commercial programs are all situated behind the red brick wall. This ribbon starts from first floor’s street cinema, ends in the underground film history museum.

Architectural Presentation

Banaux House Reborned into An Arthouse Cinema 1. Inspire normal film amateurs into professional film tasters. 2. All the newly-added architecture elements should be expressed in one architecture volcabulary. All film related programmes are put into one closed circulation, in the order of Cinema1, OPEN film, Cinema2, Filmmaker Studio& Workshop, Cinema3& Auditorium, Film Gallery, and then go back to Cinema1. This circulation is expressed visually in the form of the newly added roof. This is because copmpared to traditional commercial functions, film tasting functions are more modern product.Commercial functions and other services are situated behind red-brick walls. In the procress of circulating the film circulation, people can know more about professional film making industries.

Metal Frame

Billboard Structure

PRC Board Glazing

Metal shelf is used to support the billboard located at previous Banaux Tower angle position.

Pentagon Roof Unit Every unit of the roof is a pentagon, formed by five triangles. Unit frames are white metal frame, as frame of glazing windows, white PRC boards, or white metal shading.

A reinforced steel bracing is attached to the innerstructure, the reinforced concrete frame, and reached the ground. On it a alyer of PVC board is floored to intimate the same shaping form as the roof. Then layers of LED screen is on.

Triangle Shape Inspiration Adopting triangular shape is inspired by the shape of Banaux House itself. As known, Banaux is a unique acute triangle, so in order to keep a continious rhythm of form making, same ratio acute triangle is used to be the basic element of new roof. Five triangles form a pentagon, and pentagons are the units of the new roof. Between pentagons, PRC boards are used to connect. And all these PRC boards are also acute triangles.

Usually, the billboard shows recent films playing in the cinema, including newly launched ones and classical ones.

New Roof Construction Details

Xinwei XinweiGuo Guo||xinwei_guo@outlook.com xinwei_guo@outlook.com

The roof is constructed mainly using three layers of material. First is supporting metal frames, connected by tectonic knots. Then insulation material, in fabric form, thus will not affect visual effect of the window. Then

the layer of glazing. Wuhan has extremely cold winter and woithout central heating. Wuhan has burning summer also, so insulation in rooftop space ios especially important.

During COVID-19, despite the cinemas should be closed, the spirit of the cinema to deliver movies remained unchanged. The billboards that used to undertake the task of propaganda have now become the forefront of the cinema to guide people to fight the epidemic with the spirit of cinema.

The Greenway Vertical Central Park in a Campus High Rise

Tower of Bable: The Sequence

Bable

“Globalization gives virtuality to real buildings, keeps them indigestible, forever fresh.” Globalization, one of the inevitable results as ultra-long distance optical fiber brings communication into millisecond age, mega multinational firms come into being, accompanied by reinforced concrete high rises taking up public void in metropolitan centers. The Greenway, a high rise office building for a mega high-tech Inc., is the result when architecture, given globalization, stretched, pushed beyond its impossibility to the point of transformation. Wrapped by a vertical spiral park-like public greenway, the formal core of the office building is actually going through generic engineering to produce a completely new architectural system: the infrastructural project aims a montage of maximum possibility collected from any points, lifted from any context, cited from any ideology.

Xinwei Guo | xinwei_guo@outlook.com

Roof Garden The roof garden is at the end of the greenway. The high-tech Inc. can use it as a exhibition for their newly launched devices. In days without lauching conference, it can be a gallery of company history.

WHU Campus

Prettiest campus by an American architect Wuhan Universit y (WHU) is a national research universit y located in Wuhan, Hubei. It is one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China, and was recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Class A Double First Class University. It was one of the four elite universities in the early Republican period and is one of the oldest universities in China. Most stylish old buildings were designed by F. H. Kales (1899–1979). Educated in MIT, Kales was a pioneer to blend western architectural styles with traditional Chinese elements, which is most evident from his roof designs.

Typical Floors Typical floor plans are simply like normal office building with a larger balcony. The explosive diagram shows where the core is and how floors are connected with each other.

Podium Retails The podium is rented to merchants, retails, so compared to upper part of greenway, the podium is more open and have public characteristic.

Entrance Stairs

Vertical Central Park

Entrance it self is ser ved as yet another public park, with stairs facing the entrancE of campus, so more people can notice and be attracted to this building. The stairs are green, just as the greenway.

a public greenway wrapped around a high-rise of a high-tech Inc. The site is located near the main entrance of WHU, is the interface of WHU campus and society, thus compared to central-campus sites, more citizens apart from WHU students visit here. Actually, it has been used as a public park for years where people take a walk with their dogs, have a sit, jog, etc. And, it is the only one around the neighbourhood. The high-rise should not deprive people of a public space, instead, should give something back to the public, add up to the urban public living, even giving them a much more colorful public activity living.

Milestone Victoria & Albert Museum Wuhan Branch “It exists; at most, it coexists; Its subtext is f**k context.”

Bigness

120 years ago, a generation of conceptual breakthroughs and supporting technologies unleashed an architectural Big Bang. By randomizing circulation, short-circuiting distance, artificializing interiors, reducing mass, stretching dimensions, and accelerating construction, the elevator, electricity, air conditioning, steel, and finally the new infrastructures formed a cluster of mutations that induced another species of architecture. The combined effects of these inventions are structures taller and deeper – Bigger – than ever before conceived, with a parallel potential for the richer organization of the social world. “Bigness is no longer part of any urban context.”, indicating something revolutionary occurs in bigness. Milestone, Victoria&Albert Museum Wuhan Branch, acquires the properties of Bigness. In "Delirious New York“ Theory of Bigness” is brought up: Big Buildings acquire autonomy for distance between core and envelop increases to the point where façade can no longer reveal what happens inside, causing doom of expected “honesty”. That’s why I dismantle Milestone layer by layer, skin, flesh, bones, veins. Apart from a sense of nostalgia flashback to prosperous Industrial Revolution Age, reobtaining “honesty” in a Big Building is what I want to achieve. When people walking through the sculpture-like milestone on rusted copper grids, will there be faintest hint of “another” Big architecture?

Birthplace of Chinese Industrial Revolution Wuhan as Pioneer to Start Industrial Revolution in China

Af ter the Opium War in 1840, Western capitalism invaded China and established factories in China, which was the beginning of China's modern industry. In May 1890, the Qing court agreed to Zhang Zhidong's plan to build an iron factory. In August 1891, the infrastructure construction of the Hanyang Iron Works officially started and was completed on October 22, 1893. In May 1894, Hanyang Iron Works opened a blast furnace for iron making - Hanyang Iron Factory, presided over by Zhang Zhidong, a famous official in the late Qing Dynasty, is the first modern steel complex integrating iron smelting, steelmaking and steel rolling in China and even Asia.

The similaraty of Wuhan and the UK is that they are both the birthplce of Industrial Revolution in their region, the pioneer of discovering new things. So I want to build a milestone to memorize the harmonious past of Wuhan. However, it should not only be a statue, but also a building in whose activities the whole community can be involved. So the museum is open, serving citizens also. What’s more, some common problems confronted by all museums, like wasty storage, complex cerculation, would be solved.

Push in the map part on the box from both sides of it according to functions and the need to create different levels of publiuc space. Also, to attract more sunlight in. Then the box becomes one that sunlight can go through, so as citizens from neighbourhood and visitors. Also, one can get into the main building whichever public space he or she is on.

03. Add Bones

Add structure to the box. In order to make the holed shape come true, steel-cubemade frames will be put in, for supporting the whole building, for decoration also. Some of them are exposed some are hidden from outside. Each cube is 1.5m*1.5m*2.0m.

Viva La Vida Metabolism Watery City on the East Lake

“That we had very strong urge to make a new beginning.”

Tabula Rasa

Modernism’s promise of transforming building quantity into living quality has been a failure. High density reinforced concrete “forest” insulated from mere meaning of a “forest”, only brings catastrophic experience for its dwellers. What ever happened to 20th century urbanism? Is there a new form of urban expansion that we could refer to? What if we simply define our relationship with city not as its makers, but just as its mere subject? Viva La Vida is a city constructed on the lake, self-feeding organic complex, compared to a lifeless concrete, steel, pollution cluster, it’s more like a mega Metabolism life form, a new typological tryout of ecological urbanism city of nature, where plants, animals, human beings live together in this utopian enterprise.
