Q: How fast can I drive with chains? A: You should not drive over 30 mph whenever running chains. It can create a lot of heat. Plus, you get expansion in the chains by centrifical force which can lead to chain failure. Q: How far can I drive on a set of chains? A: Chains are not meant for long distance travel. Avoid bare pavement for extended periods. Chains are designed for compact snow and ice for short amounts of time. Q: Will all cars accept chains? A: No, some vehicles have limited clearance, not allowing for chain application. But there are other alternatives, such as spider spikes and quick trak, which allow for a traction device on the car. Resolve to Keep Your Resolutions! By Bob Cox Every year as I prepare for our annual New Years edition of Go For It Magazine, I get really excited like I did when I was a kid at Christmas. As I get closer to wrapping up the January edition in mid December, my spirit gets caught up in the excitement of setting new resolutions for the upcoming year while looking forward to more adventures. At the same time, it’s also the perfect opportunity to review and reflect on the past twelve months to see how well I’ve done with the resolutions I set way back in January. Oops, that’s where reality collides with my hopes and dreams. Apparently, I’m not alone. According to the research of a popular website; every year, 100 million Americans set resolutions and four out of five will eventually break our promises. Worse still, one third of us will give up before the end of January…ugh! As I reflected on this past year; however, I was shocked when I realized that I had kept my resolution. Actually, I made two resolutions last year, one for myself and one for my wife Diana and they both came true! My goal for 2012 was to simplify my life and my business while either maintaining or increasing my net profit. My other goal was to help my wife improve her health and vitality, but after the first eight months, those prospects looked extremely bleak as her health gradually worsened as the year dragged on. Then suddenly, a miracle happened when she was rushed to the emergency room. During an amazing 10 day stay in
the hospital at Mercy San Juan, she had a large cancerous tumor removed and now feels healthier and better than she has in years! When I reflect back on all the other resolutions I’ve set and broken, a common pattern emerges. Before last year, I was overly ambitious by setting too many resolutions. Over time, I lost focus and gave up on them all. If you are a master at multi-tasking and have had success keeping all your New Years resultions, keep up the great work! If you’re like me; however, you have my deepest sympathies! In all seriousness, don’t dispair if you haven’t had the best track record keeping resolutions. Resolve to set only one resolution this year and stay on top of it until the bitter end, the end of the year that is! The best question to ask yourself is this: What’s the one single thing I can change that will create a better life for myself and the people I love. Once you’ve answered that question, be sure to write it down and review it every day. If you really want to succeed, make sure your resolution is something you’re truly excited about and you’re willing to share it with others. If they support you great, recruit them to cheer you on. If they don’t, no worries. Use their lack of belief in you as fuel to prove them wrong! This year, I have one resolution: TO BE THE BEST ME THAT I CAN BE…FROM THE INSIDE OUT! What does that mean? Each month, like me hero Benjamin Franklin (You know, the dude with the 18th century mullet that flew kites in the rain), I’m going to resolve to work on one character trait each month. But instead of a random trait, I’m selecting a trait that represents each month of the year. For the month of January, I’ll be challenging myself to get off to a great start each day by focusing on something to be genuinely enthusiastic about. As for the other character traits for the remaining 11 months? Great question, I will have to resolve to make that decision before February arrives! New Years Resolution Tips By Monica Ortiz
New Year’s is generally a happy time and a great time to start doing something new, exciting and beneficial to the quality of your life. Most of us make New Year’s resolutions but many times we forget about them soon after. So, what should we do to increase our rate of success? Let’s start by writing them down by priority and be realistic with our goals. Write your goals in bold letters so you can see them and stay motivated. Let’s keep our list short, maybe start with two to five resolutions. New Year’s resolutions may be about our current health, career, job, education, marriage, etc. When writing your goals, be specific about them. Don’t just write, “I want to lose weight.” Write the details and be realistic. For example, say “I’ll take a 30 minute walk every other day,” “I’ll buy and cook vegetables every day,” I’ll learn how to cook healthy and delicious food at least once a week.”
Here are the Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions of 2012, accordingly to the “2012Resolutions.org” 1. Be more productive. 2. Organize my things. 3. Boost my confidence. 4. Start a business or get a stable job. 5. Be more friendly and approachable. 6. Learn how to cook. 7. Quit smoking. 8. Shift from alcohol to healthy drinks. 9. Be a vegetarian for a month. 10. Share knowledge with others. Visit their website for more details and ideas at www.2012resolutions.org or many other diets available in the web. Let’s make this year our year and be happy!

WARNING: THIS PRODUCT CAN LEAD TO... TOOTH LOSS AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE. By Dr. Andrade & Dr. Montalvo That’s the sign I recently saw at my local convenience store counter. It was written on a really colorful and stylish banner for cigarettes. That got us thinking about one of the most common diseases affecting Americans today: Periodontal (Gum) Disease. It’s a disease affecting 47.2% of
Americans. That’s according to a 2009-2010 CDC report titled “Prevalence of Periodontitis in Adults in the United States”. That’s almost half of the population! Among our patients who smoke, smoking has contributed to partial or complete tooth loss. Many of these patients remember
their parents and family members losing all their teeth and having dentures. Many still believe that having dentures is a normal part of getting older. This is no longer the case. With the proper care we can help everyone maintain a healthy beautiful smile for a lifetime. If you are a smoker and haven’t seen a dentist in a while, come in for an exam and cleaning. We can help you keep your smile healthy and bright.

Car Tech Talk Maintenance Really Pays Off By Walter Ford The time of year is upon us, temperatures suddenly drop into the 20’s or even low teens at night. The unfortunate side affect is the failure of plastic radiators and overflow tanks. The operating temperature of the engine remains fairly constant. The big difference is the much lower temperature that the system starts out at. When the temperature is low, the components shrink in size much more than normal. This temperature differential increases the amount of expansion. This expansion causes stress in the tanks and overflow container. After about 80k miles, this stress will cause the plastic to tear. Unlike metal, which tends to fail over time, the plastic fails more dramatically, usually with little to no warning. We recommend replacement of the parts as a preventative measure at 80k miles. Most of our customers are very savvy and have read about maintaining these items rather than perform a break fix which can be much costlier. These costs include tow fees, loss of work, or worse, destroying an engine! Plastic is a layman’s term I use; the real material is a DuPont PA66G33F fiber reinforced nylon. With the advent of superior hose material, plastic radiators and coolant formulations. Gone are the days of rusty cooling systems and blown hoses. The tradeoff for all this joy is what we deal with today. A cooling system, if cared for properly, will be trouble free for approximately 6 or 7 years. As cars become more high tech, both in materials and design, the maintenance needs change. BMW’s or German built cars are maintenance cars. They are designed to last for 400k to 500k miles, mostly unheard of with domestic and Japanese cars. Maintenance schedules are aimed at keeping the support components like cooling, brake and other systems from failing. In Europe, cars are kept much longer than in the U.S. It is
12 GO FOR IT January 2013
not uncommon for us to have customers with over 250k to 400k miles on a BMW. It is difficult to convince an American consumer that it is worth keeping a BMW over 200k miles. We are bombarded with domestic auto manufacturers telling us our 2 or 3 year old car isn’t cool anymore. They even entice us to trade in, even if it means we roll our debt into the new car. Ever heard this on TV? “Are you tired of that old car?” or “Sick of making payments on an old car?” Car loans are typically less than 5 years, so how can you be paying on an “old” car? The average length of ownership in the U.S. is approximately 5 years. There are now reports that people are keeping cars longer due to the downturn in the economy. Compared to Austria where 52% of the cars are German built, their average is 12.5 years, or over twice as long. Simply amortizing the cost of the car over twice the amount of years will show a drastic savings. One report found that by simply keeping your car and additional 2.5 years over the national average will result in savings. If you buy a car designed to last a long time, your savings are even greater. The simple answer is the same for any purchase. Buy the best quality you can afford, maintain it properly and over time you will have saved money. For me, this means buy a BMW, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and you’ll drive a car you can be proud of and put a little extra in the bank too. It’s GEEK to Me Most of us remember a time when a phone was only used for making calls and technology was something that only engineers had to deal with. Now phones are “smart” and tech-stuff isn’t just for geeks anymore... There are a few of the early adopters and the “Net Generation” who embrace everything new, stand in line for the next tech release, and relish in the evolution of all things tech. But for the rest of us, it all changes too fast for us to keep up and we often find ourselves overwhelmed and frustrated. One entrepreneur told me she doesn’t necessarily need to reach the top of the summit, but just needs a “toehold in technology”. Alvin Toffler, author of “Future Shock”, said: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” The challenge now becomes we not only have to learn something new, but we have to unlearn something old like habits and preconceived ideas (“I’ve always done it this way...”). But the motivation is, if we ignore the need to learn, we may be missing out on tools we can use to our advantage to help our personal productivity, our professional profitability, and community connectivity. In short, learning a few new tricks may save an “old dog” some TIME & MONEY! Because I personally am on a mission to gain a toehold in technology (and a leg up) we are launching a meet-up group and website to serve as a resource. What’s more, we plan to have fun learning and supporting each other. Learn more at BobsPocket.com. So if it’s GEEK to you now, you know what they say... “When in Rome...” (no, wait, rephrase that.) When in a techy world, learn to speak the language (or at least pick up some key phrases).
