We’ve all heard the term “the hardest working band in show business” thrown around a lot, and as a fan it can sometimes be hard to understand what that means exactly. Then on October 8, 2013, I talked to Brooklyn based duo Sleigh Bells, and quickly learned the meaning of that adage. Cranking out almost an album a year since 2010 (Treats 2010, Reign of Terror 2012, Bitter Rivals 2013), with national tours and extensive writing and producing in between, this band simply refuses to quit. Sleigh Bells consists of Alexis Krauss, vocalist, and Derek Miller doing the production and songwriting. Starting out as a solo project, Miller moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2008 in search of a female vocalist. A chance encounter at a Brazilian bistro in Williamsburg brought the two together to create what we now know as Sleigh Bells. Both Alexis and Derek have musical backgrounds. Krauss began working in theater and television at a young age, even appearing in a pop group (RubyBlue) as a teenager. Miller originally performed as a guitarist for the hardcore band Poison the Well until 2004, before leaving to pursue his own musical interests. And that, as they say, is that. Now, having just released their third studio album, Bitter Rivals (Oct. 8.), and embarking on a 30-city nation wide tour through November, commencing at a two-night show in their home base of Brooklyn, NY, Sleigh Bells seems to be entering a new era in their career.
I spoke with Derek and Alexis the night before they headed west to kick off their tour, touching on everything from the new album, to their musical relationship. This duo is tighter and more confident than ever.... and it shows.
Derek Miller XO: What are you up to at the moment? Where are you? DM: I’m in Brooklyn about to leave for tour. I leave at like 4 am, like really early tomorrow and then we’re gonna start in Vancouver. Although, we did just play a couple of “warm up” shows in NY. XO: Your third studio album, Bitter Rivals, releases today. How are you feeling about it? DM: I feel great man. I love this one the whole process was just different this time it just felt really good.
XO: You and Alexis have been playing together for a few years now, how do you think your musical relationship has progressed?
DM: It’s just a process of really getting to know each other. It’s been 5 years now and the whole thing is still evolving for us. When you’re writing songs your kind of vulnerable, you do have to trust the other person because you’re opening yourself up to basically be judged. For every one good idea I have there are ten bad ones, and she hears them all. So it’s very humbling and to this day I still get nervous when I’m giving her ideas or showing her new music. Sometimes I’ll try to be flippant about it like ‘hey check this out, this is something I’m just kicking around, no big deal’ but really I’ve been like working on it for a week and stressing and being like super nervous. And she’ll be like ‘yea that’s really great’ and I’ll be like ‘yea whatever’. (laughs)
XO: Sometimes when artists progress they tend to veer in a different direction than their original sound. With Bitter
Rivals being your third album, was it important for you to hold true to your original sound in a sense, or was your aim to create a sort of modified version of it? DM: There are no parameters. I do not set any guidelines for myself. Its just that my tastes and sensibilities lead it to sound like a certain thing. There’s a common thread that runs throughout all of it. Which is true for any band ya know, and I’m not comparing myself to them, but The Smiths’ record sounds like The Smiths’ record and Michael Jackson sounds like Michael Jackson. It’s of you. It’s unavoidable. But really if I woke up and wanted to make a polka record I would, but ya know I wouldn’t be too worried about how it would be received, we do exactly what we want and we always do it on our own terms and were not compromising and that’s how our integrity and our names in tact really.

“We’ll go on tour for months and then go right back into the studio. Making records, that’s what this whole thing is about for me. That’s’ what I love to do to write songs and then record them. I’m a music fanatic...” - Derek Miller that was the process. It just feels stronger ya know. And I’m not spread quite as thin. I can focus on production. Actually I try not to overproduce, I try not to over think the process. I kind of just work until it feels right and just sort of trust my instincts.
Nothing should stop a band, or anyone really from doing what they want. Creative risks are really not that much on the line. This band means the world to me and I love it to death, but we’re not delivering babies, we’re making music. Granted its what I do everyday, it puts a roof over my head and it feeds me, so it’s important to me, but I have a healthy perspective on it. XO: About a year ago, you were quoted as saying you were going to have Alexis do most of the heavy lifting on this album. Can you explain how that came about and what that means for Bitter Rivals? DM: I was handling all the melody work before which is certainly not a strength of mine, and it’s something that comes very naturally to her. On the last album we recorded, Comeback Kid was sort of the first song that we wrote together where I just kind of gave her some music and let her put the rest together. This new record, that’s how the entire thing was written,
XO: Do you generally have a specific creative process you follow? DM: If there was a method or a manual I’d do it every time. I really don’t’ know how it happens. I think anybody who makes records... or does anything creative for living can tell you that it’s almost like you have amnesia. Every time you sit down to do a song you don’t remember how you did it before. I will say that once it’s happening you’re very aware of it. That’s sort of the high that I’m addicted to. Trying to find that moment, those little windows where something interesting happens, something memorable and you just sort of capture it and that’s a song. But then the window closes... like I said its strange, there’s really no method, there’s’ no process. It feels like it happens differently every time. I don’t’ mean to talk about this too reverentially but ya know... its’ a rare thing, its satisfying and when it happens you end up with a song!
XO: Concerning the future, are you going to continue on your current path of pumping out albums once this tour is through? DM: Absolutely. We’ll go on tour for months and then go right back into the studio. Making records, that’s what this whole thing is about for me. That’s’ what I love to do to write songs and then record them. I’m a music fanatic. I’m a huge fan. It’s about 99% of what I think about. The fact that I get to wake up and do it every day, I never take it for granted. So I work hard at it. It’s my life. I’m just not good at taking time off. I don’t go on vacation.
I don’t take breaks. I’m doing what I love. You could give me every dollar in the world and I’d keep doing what I’m doing. I’m also very aware of how fragile the whole thing is, not just the band, and I don’t mean to be too profound here (laughs), but life. I’ve had people that are very close to be just wiped off the face of the earth in the blink of an eye with really no rhyme reason or explanation. I could be on the phone with you and then I could walk outside and get hit by a bus. That stuff happens. I’m not trying to be too deep here but just trying to illustrate a point that, if we’re prolific it’s because I just want to do it while I can, while I’m still here. This is probably gonna look really dark on paper. (laughs)

XO: What are you up to at the moment? Where are you? AK: I’m currently in New York. Running around like crazy trying to get everything in order because I leave early in the morning for Seattle and.... then were gonna cross over to Canada and leave for tour!
XO: How do you feel on the day of your third album release? AK: You know what, I’m feeling great. I am so proud of this record and very excited that people finally have the chance to hear it. It’s one of those days where you kind of feel like you’re at the beginning of a very exciting adventure. So we’ll see what happens. XO: What part do you play in the band’s creative process? AK: So our creative process has changed a lot. In the beginning, Derek was doing all of the song writing. This record was

“We sort of did a lot of things that were risky for us in the sense that we hadn’t’ sounded that way before. This record has a lot of pop influences and a lot of super R&B moments and a lot of moments that were much scrappier and meaner than any other moments we’ve had in the past. The guitar work was much more dense... so for us we took a lot of risks and we did a lot of things differently.” - Alexis Krauss the most true collaborative of them all. I did all the melody work on this record and the majority of the vocal arrangements. I contribute to some of the lyrics, but they’re pretty much Derek’s territory. He just has a better way with words than I do. We start from a guitar riff, or synth line, and then from there the track would be built. All of the instrumentation would be recorded and then we would sit down with lyrics. Then I would go home and sort of hash out melodies and arrangements. Then the next day we would listen to it, discuss it, tweak it, then record vocals in the studio. I don’t want to call it a formula, because it sounds calculated, but that was essentially how we created this record.
XO: Do you think your singing differs this time around compared to the previous albums? AK: It’s definitely different. I’m pushing a lot more air. I’m using my voice in a more traditional way, in a sense that I’m projecting and the vocals were less treated and less affected on this record. A lot of times we used a single take or just doubled that take instead of recording three or four takes, then backing them. There’s less of a sort of textural layered sound on this record and more of a direct lead vocal sound.
That’s something we’re proud of. It felt really good to really sing out and it’s definitely rewarding to perform these songs in a way that allows me to really project.
XO: Any particular songs from the new album that you enjoy singing live? AK: We played two shows now with the new songs and I think, “Sing Like a Wire” is probably my favorite. It’s just a very dynamic song and it works extremely well in a live setting... it issues a great crowd response. “Sing Like a Wire” is the one I get the most excited about.
XO: Derek said in an interview a year ago that on the Bitter Rivals album, you would be doing most of the heavy lifting. Can you explain how that came about and what that means exactly? AK: I think he was talking... in terms of writing melodies and in terms of arranging and really letting my true musical instincts come through with the vocals. So in that sense I feel much more apart of this record. This record definitely reflects more of my own aspirations more than the other records. That was a decision that Derek made that took him some time to make, because initially he was doing everything himself... I mean its not that he didn’t’ want to share the process, he had been working a long time by himself
out of necessary because he hadn’t’ found anybody to work with. It takes time to learn to trust one another as songwriters and to feel comfortable enough to give your ideas to another person and see what they can make of them. XO: How has your musical relationship progressed with Derek over the years? AK: It’s progressed by leaps and bounds. We’ve been working together now for 5 years and that’s not a long time. We’ve done a lot of things very quickly. The band has become incredibly important to both of our lives, were both fully invested in it. We’re excited to work with one another, we’re excited to see where we connect and we have a nice balance of being competitive with one another and of being supportive and nurturing of each others’ ideas. Right now I think we’re in a really great place. I’m excited to see what we do next.
47
XO: Was there a specific vibe you were hoping to achieve with Bitter Rivals that may be different from you previous records or was it important for you to hold true to your original sound? AK: When I set out to make a record we don’t’ have a mission statement we don’t know what it is’ going to turn out to be. I can’t’ say that we necessarily thought about what our sound was and what it should evolve into. It was more about making songs that came out of us at that particular moment. It was a very spontaneous record it happened pretty quickly even though we worked for several months on it, and spent a lot of time writing on the road. It was a very easy record to make and then when we recorded something, we sort of knew immediately whether something was right or wrong. We sort of did a lot of things that were risky for us in the sense that we hadn’t’ sounded that way before. This record has a lot of pop influences and a lot of super R&B moments and a lot of
moments that were much scrappier and meaner than any other moments we’ve had in the past. The guitar work was much more dense... so for us we took a lot of risks and we did a lot of things differently. But that came out of feeling very uninhibited we didn’t go into this feeling like we had to achieve certain goals or meet certain expectations. We didn’t feel the need to perform to any specific genre or sound.
XO: Concerning the future, are you going to continue on your current path of pumping out albums once this tour is through? AK: We get pretty restless with our music and we definitely feel the need to make music that is better than our last. Were our own toughest critics so after 6 months of playing bitter rivals I’m sure we’ll be sick of it (laughs). We’re not really in the business of being measured and taking our time. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but we just like to put out music and we like to get in the studio. So if we
think there’s music that is worth putting out well probably put it out sooner or later. Just playing the first two shows with the new songs it feels like we’re a whole new band. It feels like we’re embarking on a completely foreign, new exciting journey and I think it’s important to recreate those feelings at least like once every two years. I would kill myself if we played the same songs for 5 years (laughs)! I believe I speak for their fans when I say how grateful we are for their tenacity and intrepid work ethic. If you’re able to continuously release music as fast as these guys, and the demand is still there, you’ve got something special. But the best part is, it seems the band is just getting started. Sleigh Bells are currently on tour throughout the U.S. Catch ‘em at a city near you.
