About Etihad Modern Art Gallery (EMAG) Etihad Modern Art Gallery (EMAG) is a multi-purpose art space and café in the heart of the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. The gallery is open to the public every day (excluding Fridays) from 10am to 10pm, with an open door and free admission policy. Beginnings The owner, H.E. Khaled Siddiq Al Mutawaa, envisioned a friendly and versatile art space, that is open to everyone, which encouraged the promotion, discussion and growing appreciation of the burgeoning Emirati art scene. Opening in 2013, EMAG organised significant art shows and local heritage exhibitions, creating bonds with the international art scene and academic institutions. We achieved this by inviting international artists to live, teach and create in the UAE, motivating local artists to showcase their work and hosting a wide range of parallel cultural activities like art workshops, poetry nights and music events. Now & Into the Future Now, EMAG has a new exhibition with a VIP opening every month and importantly, we have extended our connections with respected galleries and institutions in Europe. In December 2016, EMAG was the first ever privately-funded gallery from the UAE to host a large scale exhibition in Berlin, the art capital of Europe. The ‘Art Nomads: Made in Abu Dhabi’ exhibition announced the arrival of Emirati artists in the international art world with numerous excellent reviews in German and international media, including Harper’s Bazaar magazine. During 2017 / 2018, EMAG will continue the promotion of excellent Emirati and UAE-based international artists with a presence in celebrated Art Fairs around the world. The planned 2017 season of exhibitions will see an even more diverse and prestigious display of new and exciting artists from around the globe and continued international publicity for UAE culture. Our Goal The goal of EMAG is a continuous progression of the art scene in Abu Dhabi, as well as promoting Emirati traditions, culture and art to a wider global audience. We aim to open a dialogue with the public and introduce new cultural concepts, whilst promoting the environmentally-conscious vision of our founder, H.E. Khaled Siddiq Al Mutawaa.

AMIRA AL AWADI Amira Al Awadhi was born in Dubai and currently lives in Sharjah. Through her analog photography, she deals with personal insecurities, social judgment and ways in which she deals and overcomes. Al Awadhi’s practice began with graphite portrait drawings and acrylic paintings. She only started photography in 2014. She was never a photographer but she fell in love with the process of developing film and printing it. She came to adore the intimacy of the darkroom where it was only her, her art and her music. Her first series, ICEBERG, won the photography category of the 2016 International Emerging Artist Award. In the same year, she was shortlisted for The Gulf Capital-ADMAF Creativity Award. In February 2016, her work was exhibited at the Greenville Museum of Fine Art, Greenville, NC, USA.

ALAA MAHMOUD ALQEDRA Alaa Mahmoud Alqedra is a Palestinian-Swedish artist born in Dubai, UAE. She graduated with honors from University of Sharjah’s College of Fine Arts and Design. She creates sculpture, installation, and drawing using household materials. Alqedra’s work playfully invites us to view our relationship with utilitarian objects. Alaa uses the material of concrete to recreate images that she remembers from her childhood — the dollhouse, Lego bricks, teddy bears, kitchen objects and other figurines of animals and dolls — and is now lost to her because the place that she now lives in and works is all about concrete. Her fondness for objects stems from her experience as a displaced Palestinian who is searching for familiarity in the foreign spaces that she passes through, creating a sense of belonging through these activated moments of asylum.
