WORK
I renovated myself this old house in the traditional neighborhood of Recreo. Preserving the old wood from the floor (corner left) and building a new wood terrace were the bigger challenges and what demanded more attention. Native woods, creating an elegant black and white parallel pattern. Saving what wasn’t rotten and keeping the floor design was another big enterprise. It was an interesting and fulfilling work to do. The house had been previously used for almost 40 years by an old couple. Curiously enough, they never had a terrace to enjoy the view. I modeled the deck in Rhino and proceeded to its construction in treated pine wood. The house had originally its floor built with I designed and constructed so it was a great opportunity to follow the process from scratch to end.

WORK
First Sketchup of the project.
Project coordination: Carlos Seisdedos Location: La Dehesa/ Santiago / Chile U6Arquitects.Urquiza-Seisdedos 2008
Leistungsphasen 1-5
The 14 villas that follow a modernist style are arranged around a huge water mirror. The villas are designed with the simple palette of materials, white rendered walls, stone cladding and glass. On the exterior elevations open-able glazed panels articulate the faรงade and allow the building to maximize the breezes coming from the valley. The route of the staircase through the building was carefully considered to open up different views of the courtyards and the wider landscape.

The project looked to become the first Boutique Hotel specialized in wine tasting. The breath taking view is the scenario for the 11 rooms of the hotel. As a part of a refurbishment project, the Hotel was an old house from the Concepción Hill. Built entirely in the inside the main façade has to be left intact. The mayor’s office was strict about not changing the core-structure of the house. A contemporary glass attic was designed to leave more space for new rooms. Several case studies were made for the main façade.

For this project we follow the idea that furniture is the point where the space interact with people and create a kind of stage where the environment is introduced. A whole room was designed for a kindergarten, although the tables were not built. On the next page, the university of Valparaiso asked for new set of furniture for a whole section of their finance department. A fresh look with a “Gruyere” pattern was proposed to them.

The project was presented to a Chinese developer as a possible development idea for a huge terrain in the outskirts of Beijing. The concept was to bring some color to the gray zone surrounding the field. A lake was planned in the middle of the park. The pedestrian corridor that connected the units was thought as a buffer zone. The dwellings also were planned with a cross ventilation system. I worked on the plans and did all the renders. SHAM OASIS
Sham Spiritual Oasis was meant as a way-station for an environmental, cultural and religious protected area, a place where people with different heritages can meditate, pray, rest and interact. We were asked to accommodate within the Oasis, in an area of about 14 hectares, a space for meditation and contemplation, an educational museum focusing on the environment and cultures, a multi-purpose hall (for eating, meeting, learning, etc.), crafts workshops and selling points, a hostel of 100 beds and a camp site, plus optional additional facilities of their choice. Worked in plans and did all the renders.

Exhibition Center in Cerrillos Degree Project Jorge Olivos/ Arturo Garcia Location: Cerrillos/ Santiago/ Chile. Studio advisor : Manuel Amaya. Date 2005
Exposition / fair area.
The project was approached as 3 bodies, the first one congregates the theaters, the second one, as a bridge of transition, the cafeteria, the third one is the fairground space of 10.000 square meters. The area of Santiago, where the project is located, has the complexity of having huge thermal deltas between day and night. To avoid expensive air conditioning, we proposed making a retractile green house. This was achieved through a complex double-faรงade bracket , which hold the photo-voltaic panels , and had a circulating system, with rollers to move. During summer this brackets could be folded. In winter they could be deployed.

Immogate Logistic Center Location : Munich 2012
A calibration was conducted to understand the way energy simulations work, and which improvements could be done to the building. Once a model is calibrated, that is to say, the energy model way, with little error. Calibrations allows a wide range of study, every variable can be changed inside the building, like fabric thickness, changes in the occupancy schedule or more complex variables, like HVAC systems. This experiments are ideal to make assertive decision in the context of a refurbishment. Above is the result of the calibration showing how assertive the gas consumption (in red) was. It is to be noted as well the amount of infiltration that the building has.

20 cm of Insulation.
The simulation of the hydraulic ramp showed that there is a huge thermal bridge in this specific part of the building. The biggest thermal bridges are in logistic halls produced by infiltration, as the doors need to be opened for long periods. Added to this is the huge problem of the ramps used to load and unload the products, which are in constant contact with the outside air temperature. They are made of steel which giving its high conductivity deepens the problem. Besides modelling the ramp in its actual state (Down below), two other simulations were run in THERM to see a possible solution with insulation (RIGHT).

GLARE & DAYLIGHTING
Located in Santiago de Chile, the project includes two towers, one is an office and the other a hotel. Two models were designed and tested as part of a consulting study for an office in N.Y.. (Handel Architects under supervision of Cristóbal Cañas)
SUSTAINABILITY WORK
A huge question was the impact of glare, from the building and its surroundings, as well as the self-induced shading. The study proved that a vertical façade with a commercial plaza on its feet will produce a clear glare problem in the plaza. A proposed measure was to give the façade a geometric special form to avoid the vertical plane. A daylight analysis was done in order to calculate the amount of light that the commercial plaza was receiving in the winter season. For the summer situation, a reflexivity study was necessary.

VISUAL IMPACT
SUSTAINABILITY WORK
An interesting feature of Ecotech is possibility to asses in a graphical and colorful way the amount of view that a specific area has. The investor was worried about the visual access to his commercial area. A visual impact analysis was made in order to render the best angles of this shop-front. The color scale is expressed in sq. meters that have access to the vitrine.

Master tesis which was made in conjunction with the IC in Chile, Instituto de la Construccion. The glazing fraction influence in office buildings in Santiago de Chile has no back-up study or norms that regulates its use. This study aims to provide understanding of the thermal load behaviour and its relationship with daylight inside an office space. This points in concordance with the main variables that affect an office building, namely, window-to-wall ratios (WWR), orientation, and three representative glazing types. The glass included in this study are, a generic double glazing, a Triple glazing LOW-E, and the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 double glazing, which is being used as the material in baseline calculations for the LEED certification. The chosen four different WWR’s: .0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9. were calculated rotating the models to the four cardinal points. This study proposes a work flow of calculations in EnergyPlus (DesignBuilder), for the thermal loads and DAYSIM (DIVA) for the daylight part.. Besides having the thermal loads of the models, the daylight calculations give the possibility of comparing results of the light consumption, between EnergyPlus and DIVA. DAYSIM allowed also the out come of annual calculations, in this case, Daylight Availability. (DA). The experiment concluded that lower WWRs have a better thermal performance. Daylight, a key factor in office spaces is highly dependent to the transmissivity (Tn) of the glass and the choice of the more suitable material is to be related to the amount of natural light pursued (less consumption) and the U value of it.
