Overthepastcoupleofseasons,Millicentgoal aack Demi Verbena has done most of her damage with her precise delivery to Tabatha Sanderson but with her shoong partner unavailable at the weekend, the mulpremiershipSaintshowedallhertricks.

Her well med drives and ability to convert from long range saw her dominate the scoreboard, especially aer moving from her starng role at goal shooter back out to the morefamiliarposionofgoalaack.

Verbena need 44 of the Saints’ 58 goals in whatwasacomfortable19goalvictory.

South came out of the blocks firing and worked their way to a three goal quarter me lead.

The shoong combinaon of Alyssa Duncan and Gracie Dalton converted 13 from 14 and the new look South aack line, with Megan Reid at wing aack and Sophie Wight leaving the defensive end and running centre looked efficientandeffecve.

Millicent wasted no me to react to the Demonsearlyform,reshufflingtheirline-upto move usual goal keeper Pora McRae into the shoong circle, Kimmi Tincknell back to gaol keeper to try and make life tougher for Dalton and the mid court returning to its usual configuraon with Lisa Duldig on the defensive wing, Lillie Paul in centre and Daisy Tunkintotheaackingwing.

TheeffectwasimmediateasMillicentwonthe quarter 18-3 in a quarter that totally turned thematchonitshead.

Verbenawaseverywhere,shoong13from16 and Tincknell’s close checking, combined with Lauren VanEeden’s athlecism out front saw the Saints start to generate plenty of turnover ball.

To the Demons’ credit, they regrouped aer the second quarter onslaught and only went down by one in the third quarter as Dalton started to find her feet against the wily Tincknell.

In the end, the final margin was 19 but given every player in the South line-up is under 20 years of age against a club that has been playing off in almost grand final for the best partoftwodecades,itwasavalianteffort.

Verbena was outstanding, while Duldig controlledthemidcourt,VanEedengenerated plentyofturnoversandTunkinusedherspeed togreateffect.

Wight was the Demons’ best with her hard running through the mid court, doing damage defensively and also providing plenty of drive into the aacking third, while Duncan worked overmetoalwaysprovideanopon.

Nikiesha Facey made her debut for the Saints in A Grade when she took to the court in the final quarter – connuing the generaonal associaon of the Facey family with the MillicentFootballNetballClub.

Castertonsandfordveastgambier

ItwasallaboutdefenceintheIslandParkclash between Casterton Sandford and East Gambier in what was a low scoring affair as eithersidegaveaninch.

The Bulldogs won every quarter as the Cats triedtoseleintoasignificantlydifferentlineuptotheroundoneteam.

Chloe Foster returned and took the goal shooter bib, while Caeleigh Humphries was a welcomeaddionaswellingoaldefence,with coach Dani Russell also stepping out for her firstgamefortheCatsinwingaack.

The inclusions allowed Madalene Cleary to moveintothecentrewhereshecouldnotonly control the game for Casterton Sandford but also impact at both ends of the court and also reunitedregulardefensivecombinaonEbany JarradandHumphries.

Aer both sides suffered from inaccuracy in theshoongcircleintheopeningquarter,with scoring opportunies at a premium, from the first break onwards, both shoong duos made the most of their opportunies and it was East’s second quarter, which they won 11-3 thatsetupthe19goalvictory

The defensive efforts of Bo Creek and Morgan Amy saw plenty of turnover ball created and the support in the mid court from Chloe Perryman, who has a tough defensive mindset, and Eliza Cole meant every Cats feed was under pressure and that pressure remainedwhenthetwomidcourtersswapped bibsathalfme.

The small moving goal circle of the Bulldogs provided its challenges for Jarrad and

Humphries and with Renee Henke and Casey Horrigan both finishing accurately in the final three quarters, the scoreboard remained in theBulldogs’favour

Northgambiervsouthgambier

For the second successive week, new North Gambier goal shooter Grace Pos enjoyed a strong oung but reigning premiers West Gambier eventually had enough firepower to take the points in what was an arm wrestle all day

Pos would have been thrilled to see Jade RierwasnotplayinganditdidleavetheRoos defensiveend,withoutthatinjeconofheight tocombatPos.

Ofcourse,Westhasastarshooteroftheirown andSarahRier,whodominatedinroundone, wasagainonfire,converngheropportunies fromlongrangeaswellasunderthepost.

West Gambier won every quarter, albeit narrowly, unl the last as North looked to conjuretheupsetbutdespitethehardrunning ofBriannaWalters,thestrengthofPosunder the past and some important defensive touches from Mikaela Pi and Noni McConnell, the Tigers were unable to bridge thegap.

Despite missing her usual defensive partner in JadeRier,AmyCram,incombinaonwiththe tenacious Racheal Langford, was sll able to create a turnover when required and her role intransionwasalsocricalasshelinkedwith Lisa McGregor, who is an expert at finding SarahRierinspace.

Sarah Rier dominated the scoring again neng 48 from 55, while at the other end, Pos was the dominant shooter but Macey Griffithcontributedsignificantlymoreshotsto the scoreboard than in round one, pung teamsonnocethatsheisnotjustafeeder

Waltersrelishedthemovetoheaackingwing with Mel Renko taking the centre bib for the West clash, with Walters speed and ability to work in small spaces perfectly suited to the wingaackrole.
