This also allowed the Fire Department access to the property, in order to contain the fire.

“Two patients who sustained critical and serious injuries were transported to a specialized facility under the care of advanced life support paramedics,” stated IPSS Medical Rescue.

IPSS Medical Rescue also reported that the house was completely destroyed, with the family members being taken in by the surrounding community. The cause of the fire had not been established at the time of going to press.

DA slams Ilembe over steep tariff increases

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Ilembe district municipality has raised serious concerns about the tariff increases proposed by the municipality for the 2023/24 financial year, which is due to begin on the 1st of July 2023.

DA Ilembe District Caucus Leader Cllr Krsna Sing says as compared to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which currently hovers at around

5.3%, the proposed increments of 9.5% for water and sewer will be an added burden for consumers.

“Load shedding is causing water outages on regular basis then this increase. Tariff increase must be cost reflective and affordable. Being saddled with tariff increase will further push consumers in a corner resulting in debt increase (debtors),” Cllr Sing stated.
