Where do I want to go? Do you already have an idea where you would like to go? Most people have an idea of roughly where they want to go before they set off. Knowing certainly helps because it enables you to research flights a lot easier. However if you don´t know, start with an Atlas or Google Earth. Think about places you have seen on TV that are of interest and ask your mates which places they would recommend!
What do I want to do? Am I into culture or adventure?
If you want more of a cultural experience head to Africa, Asia or South America, if however you want more of a party and action sports scene, check out Australia and New Zealand, USA and Canada, or even Spain (Ibiza Experience). Just remember the golden rule! Don´t be too greedy! You might have limited time away and spreading yourself too thin can lead to too much travel - sometimes it is best to enjoy somewhere for a while!
When can I go? Try and find out when is the best time to travel for you. Plan your departure on the flight prices and weather (seasons) at your intended destinations. The most popular time to set off on a round the world trip from the UK is after January 21st. Why? The weather is miserable in the UK and the flight prices have decreased after the Christmas holidays.
How am I going to Fund my Trip?
Your personal budget will make a difference as to where you can go. Africa, South America and Asia are a lot cheaper than Australia and New Zealand. In Asia for example a meal can cost around 2GBP. In Australia and NZ the same prices apply as in Europe. On the other hand the last two are perfect destinations to combine working and travelling so you can top up your budget.
Money is the life blood of travel, the more you have the more you can do, so work out what you can save, and cut costs like there is no tomorrow. ÂŁ10 goes a long way in Asia!. Remember you will always spend more that you think. Link to spending abroad
WORK AND TRAVEL OPTIONS Working holidays Australia and New Zealand Get a temp job or jobs as you travel in destinations with working holiday visas (Australia and New Zealand). This is ideal if you want travel around and top up your funds.
Most people choose to work Down Under and acquire a working holiday visa.
The working holiday visa is valid for a year and enables you to undertake casual work for one year.
After the year is up you can extend this to 2 years if you under take a couple of months agricultural work.
A working holiday visa will cost around £175.

Work as a crew member on a yacht in Australia.

Not only will these jobs top up your funds, but you will earn money by doing something you really like! What a great experience that will it be! GETTING SORTED FLIGHTS & VISA´S Unfortunately you can not just get on a plain and go! You need to sort stuff out. And because we know its ANOTHER thing you have to sort out before you can finally go on your travels of a life time, we are here to help! Getting your flights sorted and arranging Visa. Even if your trip is still a way off, and you may not have saved enough yet to get your cover all the costs. You better have a check at the flights as they form a major part of your budget.
PAYMENT PLAN Xtreme Gap has special round the world interest-free payment plans that help you make your travels happen. You can book one year ahead and people frequently do for these kinds of trips. Booking ahead fixes your dates, makes it easier to plan and save and also fixes the price of the trip meaning there are no nasty surprises of trips increasing throughout the year. At the time of booking you will either put down a 25% deposit or £100 per trip component. 16 weeks prior to departure 50% of the full trip balance needs to be paid. 12 weeks prior to departure the remaining 50%. That still gives you a full three months to save for flights and spending money! Stress free, safe in the knowledge that much of your activities, transport and accommodation is already covered. Then it’s just plain sailing on countdown until you have an amazing round the world trip.
