The only historian capable of fanning the spark of hope in the past is the one who is firmly convinced that even the dead will not be safe from the enemy if he is victorious. And this enemy has never ceased to be victorious.

Titus Andronicus does not explain what justifies violence.

It merely shows what violence does—to the victim, to the witness, to the perpetrator. How does violence act on the body? How does violence expand the imagination beyond the borders of what was once thought “unthinkable”? This play does not answer the why, but exhaustively examines the bodily what of murder, rape, statecraft, and revenge.

Ancient Rome was a civilization built on genocidal violence.

The Romans razed the factions of their enemies, took whole cities of men, women, and children as slaves, marched them naked back to Rome and drove them, by scourge and at sword point, through the streets.

That’s nothing old and nothing new.

But let us imagine that the bloodied hands of the oppressed could seize power by the throat—what next? After what they have seen, what will they be capable of imagining?

Can you ever build a just society out of an act of violence?

Or perhaps it is better to ask: Of what are the betrayed incapable?

These days it seems no two people crying out for justice mean quite the same thing.
