«À LA CROISÉE» // Architecture and ecology

FRANCE, PARC RÉGIONAL DES BOUCLES DE LA SEINE NORMANDE TOWN: HAUTOT-SUR-SEINE

This project consisted to create, in a natural park in Normandy, along the Seine, an environment house presenting the surrounding biotope, a restaurant, a belvedere allowing to understand the organization of the distant landscape and 5 houses of modest size to accommodate some tourists. Our project takes place at the crossroads of these three elements and at the crossroads of two draining ditches. The house of the environment and the restaurant are on the edge of the forest and the wet zone benefiting from a clear panorama while the houses for tourist and the belvedere are located in the slope in clearings already present, the belvedere going look for the view at the treetops.

For this house the choice was made to put the building in direct contact with the street but to minimize the nuisance it was chosen to orient the house the most possible to the south. In order to put the living rooms in contact with the garden it was decided to put them at level -1, so these rooms are mono-oriented to the south to create a necessary intimacy. For the rooms, a southern orientation has also been chosen, pushing the distributions to the north in contact with the street. A space in double height makes the connection between the two levels and to induce the visitor to descend to the level -1 and to discover the living spaces. For materiality, concrete was chosen for its ability to work with shadows, it captures the shadow, as could the impressionists (in Normandy), in order to magnify it. Vie carrabili / pedonali

For this project of collective housing in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Rome, we had to realize 87 housing, offices, shops and services of proximities. The site is slightly sloping towards the west and has a view of a large public park to the north, while to the south there are other buildings. At the northern edge of the site the remains of an aqueduct are present and to the west a public square, one of the aims of the project was to give it more qualities. For the project we chose to work with a system progetto of open courses creating dal lato della piazza a neighborhood life while not enclosing these spaces, the buildings are organized around these courses while leaving views and access between theprogetto street todal thelato south andpiazza the della park North. A tower located at the highest point of the site progetto dal lato del parco makes it possible to signal from the square in the west and the surroundings. For housing, we tried as much as possible to organize houses in double height to promote natural sunlight and give better spatial qualities to apartments. To serve the apartments, an open corridor system, designed as streets connecting the entire length of the buildings, was chosen to reduce the number of stairs and elevators. For materiality, the raw white concrete was chosen to capture the shadows on the facades but also reduce the heat absorption of the buildings.

«RÉ-AMÉNAGER UN CENTRE» // urban project FRANCE, CITY OF DARNÉTAL

The town of Darnétal is located at the periphery of Rouen, an old industrial city in the 19th century and 20th centur concentrating a commercial area in connection with the metropolis. But the city remains mainly a dormitory town, not very at place of the car is important in the city center due to pendular movements because Darnétal is the gateway east of Rouen to reac We left from observation to think this project. First we chose to create a gentle circulation along a river between Rouen and Darn ling the industrial heritage and the landscape between the two cities. Our project also seeks to revitalize the city center, for this make this city one of the major points of culture in the city by the implementation of important cultural facilities. This choice is that Darnétal already hosts two schools related to art: the fine arts and the National School of Architecture of Normandy. To ac chosen to establish a regional fund of contemporary art (FRAC) instead of a supermaket and housing instead of a car park to att A library takes place along the town hall and park instead of an another car park. The fountain Bocca di Leone, was built in 1842, consists of several elements: an ancient sarcofage turned into a basin, a lion’s head from which water comes, 2 carved lions surrounding the family’s coat of arms having commanded the fountain . For this restoration we first carried out a scientific survey of the fountain then we made a precise statement of the degradations and pathologies, to finish we suggested prescriptions to restore the fountain as well as a project of re-ammagement of the place where the fountain is.

ÂŤCONCRETE PODÂť // micro-space pavilion JAPAN, NAGOYA

ARCHITECT: KAZUYA MORITA ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

Concrete pod is a pavilion designed as a haven of peace conducive to contemplation, it can be installed in a forest, a park with the function of shelter but also promoting the opening on the context by creating frames on the surrounding landscape. Its interest is also its finesse and its lightness due to the thickness of the concrete (15mm) forming the hull of the pavilion. This finesse is synonymous with strength because it can support the weight of a person at the top. This strength comes from its shape derived from that of an egg, which has a very important thickness strength ratio.

«MODEL OF A FRAGMENT OF THE VARDØ WITCH MEMORIAL» // Norway, ARCHITECT: PETER ZUMTHOR

Located at the northern end of Norway, in an area with a harsh climate with extreme temperatures and violent winds. This building, while respecting the context perfectly, stands out against the elements while having a light structure reminiscent of the fish driers present in this region. This memorial pays tribute to women accused of witchcraft and burned in the seventeenth century in the form of long corridor presenting the victims and their accusations. This route is isolated from the outside world by a black painted stretched canvas on the inside setting up a monastic atmosphere imposing respect. The stretched fabric constituting the envelope of the building also participates in the inner astmosphere since with the wind this undulating fabric creates a presence reminding the women killed.

«PARENTHÈSE» // Collectif Lucien

PLURIDISPLINARY ARTS FESTIVAL, INDUSTRIAL WASTELAND ROUEN, FRANCE

The Lucien collective has been working since its beginnings to promote art in its widest form. No limit of gender, distinction or ranking, Lucien wants to be plural and multidisciplinary. Through its events, the association seeks to surround itself with artists advocating the same values of sharing. The group seeks to create meetings and the link between public and artist and thus establishes a real mission of cultural mediation. The association creates its own events and also provides lighting or scenography for public and private structures. The parenthèses event, initiated three years ago, takes place in a former industrial wasteland and is designed as a public square serving as a place of experimentation for artists but also for spectators and visitors.

FIGURE DRAWING: Nude drawings are an exercise, a very important experience in artistic discovery. They allow to become familiar with the accuracy of human curves while developing skills in the representation and understanding of the human and their bodies. This understanding is indispensable to the practice of architecture, one of whose interests is the meeting of bodies with architectural space. Drawing is also an outlet, for a moment, to break free of established social rules.

ROADTRIP IN SCANDINAVIA: AUGUST 2017 // 5300KM // NORWAY SWEDEN FINLAND

The Viewpoint by Snøhetta

After a walk, facing the elements where the cold, the wind and the rain incited us not to reach the point of view, we discover the building, this box of corten steel enclosing a wooden bench with organic forms. When we approach the entrance we do not distinguish the landscape, it’s only after entering and having circumvented the wall that we discover the landscape through these large windows which seem to o oat alone without structure allowing the entrance landscape inside. The oor also allows you to feel integrated in the landscape since it reeects the lights, the clouds inside. This building can appear, from the outside, as being a box posed on a mountain but when we enter, this box is transformed into screen which magniies the landscape.

The Steilneset Memorial by Peter Zumthor

On the fourth day, in the morning we arrive at Vardø, a shing village on the edge of Norway, we came to see the witches' memorial. For that we cross the village and next to the fortress and the church we saw an extremely long silhouette installed in front of the sea. We had studied this building before choosing to go there to visit it but when we arrived in front of it, we discovered its monumentality due to its dimensions and not to its materials. Then we enter to discover a path shaped as a corridor in the darkness where only a few light bulbs illuminate us, bulbs symbolizing women accused of witchcraft. The bulbs and the fabric forming the building envelope wave with the wind and create a presence allowing the building to assume its role as a memorial. This building is a strong architectural experience but also a mystical experience.

The Oslo Opera by Snøhetta

Last stage: the city of Oslo and its opera. The Oslo opera appears along the bay like an iceberg blocked by the coast. This image of the iceberg is enhanced by its shape and color: it takes the shape of a white and bluish top. The interest of this building lies in the fact that it fulllls several objectives namely a contemporary opera room but also a high quality public space in the city center overlooking the bay of Oslo. This makes the Oslo Opera not only a place of entertainment where there is a certain part of the population but also a public space for all. It therefore has a social role promoting cohesion among the population of the Norwegian capital.

CHOICES AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS:

I had the chance to grow in Normandy, a French region with a significant historical and artistic past. I was able to discover the antique architecture (Lillebonne theater), medieval (city of Honfleur) but also modern with the city of Le Havre rebuilt after the second world war and its auditorium built in 1982 by O. Niemeyer. This architectural richness allowed me to form a very youthful culture. Normandy is also the birthplace of Impressionism, hence my current attachment to the work of light in my architectural approach. I also carried out a scientific baccalaurĂŠat with art option, giving me scientific bases but mainly a rigorous working method. It is for these two reasons that I naturally chose to move towards architecture bringing together culture and scientific aspects.

From now on, as a master of architecture, my attachment to artistic and historical culture has only grown thanks to the National School of Architecture of Normandy’s teaching but also thanks to all the trips and exhibitions that I had the opportunity to visit. Architectural studies have allowed me to acquire knowledge that allows me to obtain a global vision of the world around me, and therefore educating my student vision to become one of an architect. During my studies I had the opportunity to study with Mrs. Judith Rotbart and Mr. Laurent Salomon whose architectural approach come from the group UNO initiated by H. Ciriani. Their main interests are the creation of spaces with undeniable spatial qualities. but also a work of light and views, all taking into account the modern principles while reinterpreting them to anchor them in the contemporary context. This work also allows me to relate to architecture my attachment to the light born after my meeting with the work of the impressionists and the way they fix the light and the shadows on the canvas. In my constant search for knowledge and culture, I chose to study at the Department of Architecture at the Roma Tre University in Italy. It was during this year abroad that I realized the importance of both environmental and historical context in the work of the architectural project. This year also opened my eyes to the interconnection of architectures around the world and the enrichment caused by the meeting of different cultures. In the future I would like to continue to satisfy my search for discoveries in order to become a complete architect with diverse and varied knowledge allowing me to become autonomous in the work of the project and in all its subtleties. This research is not only about making me a good technical architect but rather about making me someone better, more educated about people and their interactions because the architect in my opinion is not only a builder of spaces but a builder of places of life. I see architecture now as one of the pillars of society, the architect has this responsibility and must work in connection with the latter, so he has a role of mediator. That’s why today I want to continue to discover the world, its architectures, the people who create them and those who use them.
