How does removing cultural values and context impact design? The project looked to critically contest the interactions between rural and metropolitan centres and the effects and outcomes on those people living there. The project site was set in the historic town of El Rocio, within the Donnana National park. Specifically chosen due to its world heritage value, the town provided a rural landscape from which to design from. As a critical exercise, the cultural demands and restraints were removed and the design focus was purely concentrated on form. The structure connects the city to the natural environment that encompasses it. Paths act as an extension of the city’s waterfront far out into the marshland bringing the users into the nature. The building itself envelopes a section of the road infrastructure in order to bridge the divide between natural and man made, unlocking previously undiscovered natural landscape to the inhabitance.

The project looked to regenerate and re-establish the unique connection that Sharpness has with the Severn, through the declining sustainable fishing industry. The design not only reflected the uses in a practical and ergonomic sense but also the principles of an industry struggling with mounting demand and the realities of growing unsustainable fishing methods. As two parallel conflicting models, much like those of the town, the design was based upon two theoretical principles reflecting the production processes of rod manufacturing. This concept looked to create the foundations for a sustainable community at Sharpness on the premise of a communal settlement model developed around the regions invaluable fishing industry.

A two form entry Primary School and accommodation for Bristol Hospital School Education Service (BHES) at Whitehall School in Montpelier, Bristol. The proposed development included the refurbishment and extension of the existing school building, which is Grade II Listed, a new extension and devlopment of a nursery building. My involvement in the project began at Stage 4 - Construction design. I have been involved in various RFI responses, with the time presssures that these impose. Technical design detailing and sectional detailing under the supervision of the project architect. Two competitions for entry within the same month. The first, a bid for a ÂŁ15,000,000 development for a residential site in Bristol. The second, the design of a ÂŁ400,000 Scout welcome centre that reflected the wood and rich heritage of the area and acted as a flagstone bese for Scouts in the UK. After initially finding the competitions myself, two teams were formed in which I had invlovment in both to ensure timely completion for the deadlines.

- A&E Hospital and Care A studio focused on the use of film as a tool in the analysis of site features, the design itself and the presentation of the concepts. The studio looked to develop a high scale project that could maintain its strength on such an imposing site. Based upon a primitive geometry, the project epitomises the tripartite of care offered by the NHS; emergency, short term and rehabilitation. The design’s readability on the skyline enforces its strength in communicating its purpose as a beacon from which to head to in times of emergency. The three towers, each offering a different level of care, are characterised by their multi-storey garden wards. They offer green space at every level of the building and improve on the current research developed in care models. The garden wards also provide a ‘buffer’ from the roads with green walls, gardens and shrubbery establishing a level of comfort within the infrastructural complexity of the site..
