I have an artistic and creative approach to design, and enjoy creating the architectural elements, paying attention to unique spatial qualities and characteristics of each space. I am interested in architectural organisation, to achieve efficient planning, challenging maximum flexibility and practicality. I am looking to take the next big step in my career focusing on technical detailing in design and its effect on spatial and environmental qualities of a building.

In this project I have been a part of the design, documentation and construction The Black Forest Distillers project is the production factory for spirits, where the architecture becomes a part of a story line for Monkey 47’s commercial identity. The new site is an existing farmhouse that has been rebuilt and renovated as a Gin Distillery. Also housing a restaurant, museum and hosting gin tasting.

Joan Mir贸 Arts Foundation

Flores and Prats Architects, Barcelona In this project I have done on site measurements of the exterior, hand drawn site analysis and documentation of existing building and landscape, graphic representation, and model making of various new proposals The most important step in creating site specific architecture is understanding the elements that make the building special. The hand drawn documentation of the existing site inspires for the next step of design. The Joan Miro Arts Foundation designed by Louis Sert sits elegantly atop the Montjuic hill in Barcelona. An initial detailed study of the museum with Flores and Prats, looks at potential expansion of the building with minimum effect on its surrounding while respecting the style and language of the existing architecture and landscape. The second component is the ribbon facade at first floor level. The facade is intended to be clad in local sandstone and unite the building, wrapping from the highway around and up Vaughan Avenue. The fenestration of this element has been devised as an overlay between the view corridors and the regular rhythm of a sound wave. The resultant ratio of solid to void provides a balance between the solid – that projects the beauty of the material, and the void – which allows views to the water and park. The third element is the volume of the softly illuminated auditorium itself. Projecting through the roof of the foyer, this becomes a beacon of light at night, instantly recognisable with the precinct and assisting in making the building a local landmark. In addition, the illumination will provide a level of lighting to the park at the upper level, improving safety and security at night. FUNCTION The functionality of the spaces has been considered in a very detailed manner to inform the design stage. Foyer – This is split over three levels, spaces can double up as performance, exhibition and function areas. Access to bars is provided at the ground and first floor levels, with the cafe occupying part of the ground floor space. Front of House – Utilising a compact design that ensures efficiency, the front of house the box/ cloak facilities are located with the administration office. The public amenities are located under the auditorium to again maximise the available space. Auditorium – Hosting 1000 seats in a “shoe box” configuration, split between the stalls and the dress circle, the auditorium is designed as a multipurpose venue with a focus on musical performances. The stage has wings which are well connected to an upper level of catwalks and technical spaces. Back of House – The facilities have been designed to be on one level to facilitate easy access and negate the need for a second lift. The circulation is generous and a direct path from the loading dock is provided to the stage and studio via the appropriate sound and light locks.

SECOND FLOOR PLAN

Civil / Structural Screw pile technology has been investigated and found to be an appropriate economical footing system, with the major advantages of eliminating the need for removal of fill material, minimising noise of installation and avoiding problems associated with water-charged ground. The site of the Gosford Regional Performing Arts Centre appears to straddle a spur of higher-level rock, which will again suit the proposed system as the length of the screw piles can readily be altered without cost premium. Precast wall systems have been investigated to address both structural and acoustic concerns. Mechanical It is proposed to utilise a displacement type air-conditioning system for the auditorium and “blackbox” studio. Studies have demonstrated that displacement ventilation saves energy as compared to standard mixing ventilation. Further benefits to this project as a result of utilising displacement ventilation will be a reduction in heavy plant/mechanical ductwork at high level. This reduction in weight will assist in the goal of incorporating a lightweight roof structure.

Acoustics There are two separate spaces which require great acoustics that do not compete with one another. The first one is the audience area and the second is the stage area. These issues are addressed by the use of reflectors to contribute to the sense of clarity, intimacy and loudness. The volume of the auditorium is designed to cater for musical performance while at the same time allowing it to function as a true multipurpose venue. The proposed concept has also considered external noise conditions associated with traffic on the Central Coast Highway and external plant areas.

Studio – The black box studio is designed to utilise a retractable seating system. The space can cater for up to 208 seats in a number of configurations. The studio is located to share both the front of house and back-of-house facilities. The studio has four-sided access with a generous congregation and storage area at the rear.

In response to the corner location the building wraps around the site, forming a continuous sandstone ribbon, highlighting the glowing theatre. CAD Microstation Graphics Photoshop

The first is the transparent base: the glazing to the foyer and the public spaces at ground level. This level of transparency will project the vibrant activity of the theatre to the passersby. Particularly at night, the glazed base will ensure that the ‘buzz’ of the theatre will be visible to both pedestrians walking past to the stadium, for instance, as well as passengers in the many vehicles that drive past this site each day and night.

C

FORM The form of the building is a strong singular gesture along the facade that provides an iconic landmark for Gosford City. The building can be described as having three main elements.

L

Firstly, major consideration is given to retaining the integrity of the War Memorial Park. Given its cultural and community significance, it was important the design retained select views from the Memorial towards Gosford City Park and The Broad Water. The provision of a stepped, landscaped amphitheatre space, facing back to the cenotaph, creates a sense of enclosure and respect for the monument; while at the same time providing a well-defined space for the ceremonies that take place in the park. The second principle is the creation (or re-creation) of a public stair as a link between the War Memorial Park and Vaughan Avenue. Lastly, the entry points to the Theatre foyer are set back from Vaughan Avenue to create a wide public plaza that will be strategically located to take advantage of the future closure of this street and the realignment of Baker Street.

A

URBAN DESIGN Key Urban Design Strategies

R

The design aims to accentuate the corner, ensure high visibility of the site from the Central Coast Highway, and, to appreciate the site as a waterfront location. The main entrance to the Theatre is located away from the highway via a shared public space, engaging pedestrians. This design guarantees a strong visual presence along the highway providing a new iconic landmark for Gosford City.

Rooftop Community - Semi Public

This project explores the medium of architecture as a physical element that can initiate social interactions; taking a place beyond its designated function. It pushes to create a community within the residential sector, and to change the image of Liverpool.

The building creates opportunities to meet people. All access to the apartments is through the main courtyard, filtering the residence from public.

The roofscape houses community spaces that are shared between smaller groups of residence and accessible to smaller groups of residence.

The community spaces on the southern corner of the site are semi-public and accessed through the commercial spaces and from within the complex. This allows for an adaptable space that can be used for larger gatherings.

The architectural planning encourages people to meet as they cross paths entering their apartments and within the designated community spaces. 3D Modelling Rhino Graphic Photoshop Watercolour Drawings

Urban Heterodoxy: Creative Residence Market

M.Arch Graduation Project / USYD The secret to community architecture is a sense of ownership of the residence and it is through management and creativity that this sense of belonging is gained. Seeing that the majority of inhabitants in the area have recently migrated to Australia the residential market aims to ease the resettlement and provide a framework for the residence to create their own home. At a smaller scale the architecture focuses on a composition of inspiring spaces, built in a way that encourages people to work and live in each space. In return the inhabitants will feel at home and add character to the complex, making it their own. 3D Modelling Graphic
