well as Detailed Planning. The collective experience of the Engineering Office for Planning and Architecture (ECOPA) reaches more than 44 years of professional work with a blend of local and international professional and academic exposure of most of the founders and senior staff of the firm ECOPA is founded in 1987 by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Serag and Prof. Dr.ShafakElWakil, both

are professors of architecture and urban design. ECOPA is not a standalone firm. Instead it bases its activities and projects on a vast network of coalitions and collaborative associates and firms, in addition to a wide network of connections to individual consultants and experts from different disciplines, e.g. building technologies, structural engineering infrastructure networks, urban economics, quality control, urban sociology and demographics, geophysics and soil mechanics and traffic and transportation engineering. In many projects that require interdisciplinary intervention, our firm plays the role of the coordinator among the different consultancies taking part in the project. An important asset of ECOPA is the close contact with different local and international organizations and experts. To name some; we have been working as a lead consultant in some of the UNDP projects in the South of Egypt as well as several joint ventures with several nationalities, e.g. American, French, Japanese and German, in several architecture, planning and environmental projects.

Scope of Work ‫مجاالت العمل‬ Egypt, Africa and Middle East 1- Strategic regional, urban and detailed Urban Planning ECOPA and ELWAKIL have been heavily involved in several city planning projects in different provinces in Egypt. Each and every city had its unique essence and nature.Our intervention in most cases zooms in from the macro level to the micro level within the city and from the surrounding regional settings to issues related to inner-city regeneration and upgrading of the historical cores of the cities. The firm is also experienced in new city planning, as we have planned several new cities in the South of Egypt some of which are currently being implemented e.g. Toshka and New Assuit. 2- Urban Design and landscape Architecture The firm has and had been involved in several urban design projects in Egypt. Since urban design comes as the next level after detailed planning, some interventions of urban design and landscape architecture had been made to complement detailed planning projects, such as the city center and the regional park at Toshka city. Other projects came as standalone interventions. 3- Architectural design Projects Our firm has been involved in many architectural projects, in the different regions of Egypt. Since, Egypt already has diverse regions in terms of climate, context, building mate¬rial, and social fabric, making most of our contributions in terms of architectural projects unique in terms of adaptation to the contextual aspects of each region. Our scope of work in architectural design projects includes but is not limited to: - Housing Projects - Administrative buildings: corporate headquarters and banks, - Educational facilities: schools and faculties, - Health care facilities: hospitals, clinics and medical units, - Tourism facilities: hotels, - Civic centers, - Commercial markets. - Housing projects

A limited competition for the rehabilitation of khedive’s Cairo , Egypt . The main target was to revive the glamor to

,urban design and planning . Their projects span over 60 countries and have garnered over 600 awards. Their work is recognized for its visionary aesthetics, exceptional functionality .

Informal settlements in greater Cairo A study among a research theme held by an Elgero – German cooperation ( Epau ) in 1996 The research dealt with the reasons that lead to the formation of such areas including economic , political , administrative , planning and social reasons. It classifies them according to their type of location ( agricultural land , desert area , water banks , and inside the city ) and gives basic information about them including number of areas in each type , population density and so on . It turns them to the different aspects of the informal settlements structure . i.e :social structure , economic structure ,settlement and building structure as a result of the above mentioned items , the research deduced the different problems and the potentials of such areas , that could lead to a positive development of the city , when channeled in a rational way . The research presented two case studies with the possible mitigation .

Use of public spaces in the informal areas in Cairo and Giza governorates The research gives a new dimension to the former researcher about the informal areas as it presents the daily life of the dwellers of these areas that is similar to their previous life in the country side . It includes the integration between the dwelling’s elements and the function that occur in the public space in front of it , leaving a lane , street , a visitor or a residential court . As a result of fields studies in four informal sectors in Cairo different activities , have been observed , they are : house hold , handcrafts and commercial , entertainment and religious activities . The research concluded the necessity of the maintenance and beautification of those spaces to enhance the profit of their use .

Informal settlement KOSS El Nakasa in Saudi Arabia Field and analytical study of an informal area in holly mecca , Saudi Arabia starting with a historical background , the research displays the problems and the reasons of the formation of the informal settlement in Mecca that mainly exist in the peripheral zones of the city . Many reasons lead to the selection of the particular area : •

A traditional area including all the conditions of informal settlement located in a strong hilly site

•

The population reaching about 30800is mainly composed of 80 % east Asians ( Burma , Bangladesh , Pakistan , Thailand , and others ) and 20% saudians .

The study gives a diagnosis of the different problems of the area from the social , economic , natural , urban and environmental perspectives , presenting the goals of the upgrading in its different aspects as well as proposing general strategy and can implement plan to reach goals .
