PROTOTYPE I

Graduate Student Designer: Sean Fallace & Yizhou Zhao

PROTOTYPE I focuses on the importance in flexibility by providing a floor plan free to maximize adaptability by potential residents. Also, the design incorporates a generous porch that both responds to the local heritage and social life of St. Petersburg. An important feature of this design is its construction materials and methods. The home is designed using SIP (Structural Insulated Panels). The SIPS are pre-manufactured and shipped in to the construction site and can then be installed by very few people as they are designed to just lock into each other, a kit of parts. This is minimizing the amount of construction on-site.

PROTOTYPE II

Graduate Student Designer: Thomas Martineu & Jesse Eliassen

Responding to the architectural character of the city of St. Petersburg, this design of PROTOTYPE II focuses on developing a bungalow design that would be welcomed to most historic neighborhoods within the city. Including a porch allows residents to engage with other local residents and integrates them into the community. The interior of the home is designed to allow easy access for any resident, including those in a wheelchair. The designer wanted to create a home that a resident in a wheelchair would be able to use comfortably without having to customize the built structure. The interior and exterior space allows the residents with a disability to circulate and use the space as any other resident would.

PROTOTYPE III Graduate Student Designer: John Jay & Martina Ciccia

The design of PROTOTYPE III is the combination of two simple boxes. The idea behind keeping the forms simple is to maximize the space on the interior as well as the exterior. This home although simply at 390 sqft creates the illusion of a much larger space because two of the four walls have swinging screen doors allowing the home to be opened up to allow an uninterrupted view of the exterior space. The front porch entrance also gives the feel of an extended living space because the screen door can slide away and blend the interior and exterior living space. Any number of these homes can be placed alongside each other creating private entrances for each as well as two mirrored homes can be placed with each other and create a large shared entrance patio.

PROTOTYPE IV Graduate Student Designer: Yesenia Vega & Nicole Harner

The idea behind PROTOTYPE IV is to create a design that can be built by anyone and is cost efficient. The concept takes the simplicity of the 20x20 light box and wraps it in a seamless shell. The most important part of designing a home for a veteran is making a home that has one universal design that can fit the needs of everyone without modifications. A simple design concept, the structure is a perfect 10’ by 10’ square with an open floor plan. The entrance of the home greets you with a 15sqft front porch creating the illusion of a larger indoor living space. As you enter the home you enter into the living space, that can be arranged as a living room. On the left is a built in kitchenette with open shelving that saves money in cabinetry and also gives the home character. The home is divided by a wooden panel sliding door that creates privacy for the bedroom and the full service restroom. Above the restroom space is a loft space that is designated for extra storage needs.
