This isn’t your Aunt Mabel’s casserole. No, this is childhood happiness all lined up and layered in your favorite casserole dish. You can go as big as you dare, with three to five simple ingredients all ready from the grocery store, you can throw this sweetie (also known as ICE CREAM Sandwich Sundae Cake) together in a flash. 10 One band is frustrated with the Greensboro scene because of its alleged “lack of good rock ’n’ roll.” Aaron Coker and Jeremy Fountain are SPIDER BITCH, the self-proclaimed “blend of dirty, greasy, heavy, garage rock ” band with a touch of distorted delta blues. 11 THE SPRING THEATRE will present the world premiere of a pair one-act plays on July 28 and July 29 at the Mountcastle Theatre in downtown Winston-Salem.
What makes this presentation even more special is that both playwrights are local teenagers. 12 The singer and songwriter CHASTITY BROWN was raised playing music in a Pentecostal church in western Tennessee. But she didn’t stay focused on the church for too long. She got kicked out of seminary school in Baltimore when she was 19 or so and ended up for a time, back in Tennessee, on the other side of the state in Knoxville, playing music and going to school. 20 The third chapter in the latest incarnation of the venerable monkey-movie series, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES follows last week’s Spider-Man: Homecoming as an example of how to allow a franchise to continue to expand and breathe rather than trying to keep it mired in by-the-numbers numbness.

MELT AND KENNEL KRU UNITE TO HELP CHAINED DOGS BY KATIE MURAWSKI
Melt Kitchen and Bar is owned and operated by Kim Brewer and her husband, Jeff Brewer. The Brewers have been at the Golden Gate Drive location for two and a half years and then just expanded to New Garden Road in February. Melt specializes in paninis and their different sandwich combinations. They have six taps of local draft beer at both locations, and the New Garden location offers liquor and daily cocktail specials. Melt offers mimosas every Saturday and different sangria choices two times a week. Their current sandwich special features local Rudd Farm’s tomatoes in their take on a BLT, the bacon arugula, and tomato or as they call it, BAT. On Saturday, July 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. only at their Golden Gate Drive location, Melt will be hosting a fundraising brunch for the local nonprofit Break The Chain Kennel Kru. A percentage of the profits will go toward the nonprofit that benefits unlawfully tethered dogs. Kim Brewer said that she and her husband are dog people and that is why they feel strongly about the cause and want to help
benefit the nonprofit. “It is interesting that they help specifically dogs,” Kim Brewer said. “They are small and local, and we like that.” Kim Brewer said she encourages everyone to come out, bring their dogs and enjoy the patio outside as well as food and drink specials. Sylvia Mayon is the founder of Break The Chain Kennel Kru and according to the group’s Facebook page, it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit “committed to offering no-cost, chain link kennels (with tarps) to underserved parts of our community, for the purpose of freeing High Point and Greensboro area dogs from permanent tethering.” The nonprofit’s focus is to concentrate their efforts on a particular neighborhood and encourage neighbors to help each other. Families must be receiving government assistance to qualify, and they must agree to get their animals(s) spayed/neutered. “It is not just about the dogs,” Mayon said. “We care about the families we serve as well.” Mayon said the organization does checkups after helping a family and they hope

The creaminess comes from full-fat coconut cream (don’t be afraid of healthy fats, y’all), the richness from cocoa or cacao powder (the latter has more health benefits) and sweetness from maple syrup. Making Greensboro nasty again at New York Pizza
O
ne band is frustrated with the Greensboro scene because of its alleged “lack of good rock ’n’ roll.” Aaron Coker and Jeremy Fountain are Spider Bitch, the selfKatie Murawski proclaimed “blend of dirty, greasy, heavy, garage rock ” band Editor with a touch of distorted delta blues. On July 20, they will join forces with their bassist and the frontman of Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Al Al Ingram at New York Pizza for, what their Facebook event refers to as, “five hours of pure, unadulterated, stripped-down, nasty rock ’n’ roll.” Accompanying Spider Bitch on Thursday night will be two bands from Wilmington, North Carolina, The Male Men and Helichopter. “We got to take this town back over,” Coker said. “We are Tate Street regulars for the past 20 years, we have seen it all, and we are well-poised and ready to destroy some shit. We’re doing a rock ’n’ roll sound like nobody else in the country.” Coker is a 43-year-old Greensboro native who graduated from University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2001 double majoring in English and religious studies with a minor in German. Coker said he also served as the editor of the international poetry review and has lived in the Tate Street area for 10 years. He has played with several different people and bands on and off, and after a three-year hiatus, Coker said he wants to get back into the music scene. “We are the loudest band in the state,
Aaron Coker and Jeremy Fountain, founding members of Spider Bitch. but it is too quiet for us as it is,” Coker said. “We shake the walls when we play, we trash our equipment and throw guitars and drums everywhere.” Coker said the name Spider Bitch just came to him “out of the blue.” The group has gone under three other names since they started playing in November. Coker said Spider Bitch would have to stick because they want to start promoting themselves. Coker said he and Fountain met in 2002 when Fountain’s band opened up for his punk-blues band, The Rakes at College Hill. “I heard [Fountain] warming up on drums, and I thought it was the best shit I have ever heard in my entire life, and I knew immediately I wanted to play with
him for the rest of my life,” Coker said. Coker said he and Fountain became closer friends in 2012 when Fountain was playing in an improv project at New York Pizza called Pizza Jam with, Coker said, “some heavy hitters from the east coast scene” such as Big Something’s sax player Casey Cranford and a band called ESP. Fountain said he has been playing the drums for almost 20 years. He moved to Greensboro in 1999 to go to UNCG and has just stuck around ever since. Fountain graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and had been actively playing in bands since 2000. Fountain said they both share a love for loud, aggressive rock ’n’ roll, but he said Coker and his relationship is not only
dependent on their shared musical taste. “It wasn’t just the music,” Fountain said. “We would hang out after the shows, go to one another’s house, sit up all night listening to music and figuring out who we really were. [Spider Bitch] fits together pretty naturally. I really, really like the style of music that he is doing. It has inspired me to want to be a part of it and put some rhythm to it.” Seth Oldham, a friend of Coker’s, describes Spider Bitch’s music as “an alchemical synthesis of three superhuman creative forces and personalities coming together to transmute each of their blazing musical fires burning within and combine them to make the healing elixir of unadulterated rock ’n’ roll.” Another friend of Coker’s, Kristen Sears said Spider Bitch will rip the roof off of New York Pizza on Thrusday. She said they will blast open a portal to a time when Greensboro lived and breathed rock ’n’ roll with their “rare breed of dirty, garage punk.” “Spider Bitch will make Greensboro nasty again,” Sears said. New York Pizza’s Thursday Throwdown with Spider Bitch, The Male Men and Helichopter will begin at 9 p.m. and runs until 2 a.m. Check out their Facebook event for more details and to see the drink specials offered at New York Pizza that night. In the near future, Spider Bitch will be playing two music festivals in September: Heap Fest in Snow Camp and Tate Street Fest. To learn more about Spider Bitch and keep up their show schedule, check out their Facebook page. ! KATIE MURAWSKI is the editor of YES! Weekly. Spring Theatre showcases local teen playwrights The Spring Theatre will present the world premiere of a pair one-act plays on July 28 and July 29 at the Mountcastle Theatre in downtown WinstonSalem. What makes this Mark Burger presentation even more special is that Contributor both playwrights are local teenagers. Grace Reasoner, the author of Conversations, is 16 years old and will be attending Reagan High School in Pfafftown in the fall. Abby Powell, who penned Make A Wish, is 13 years old and will attend Forsyth Early College in Winston-Salem this fall. In an official statement, Erinn Diaz, the founder and artistic director of Spring Theatre, explained: “When I was young, I dreamed of writing my own productions and having them produced. In doing some research for picking our season this year, I was surprised that there were no other theater companies in the Triad giving teens the opportunity to see their work on stage in a professional environment. So, we put out a call for submissions and were pleasantly surprised at the shows that came our way! Two of them made the final cut, and we hope to produce many more student-written world-premiere productions in the future.” Reasoner’s Conversations is a humorous coming-of-age comedy about friendship, following five sets of friends at different points in their lives and how their relationships have changed over time. Reasoner said, “It’s a play that studies the human condition and observes what we have all learned as individual human beings,
Grace Reasoner “Conversations” is left, Abby Howell “Make A Wish” at right. They’re the teen playwrights whose works are being showcased by the Spring Theatre. as well as connected people, throughout life.” Howell’s Make A Wish puts a fresh, farcical spin on fairy tales. The main characters are Iris, your prototypical fairy-tale princess, and Mia, one of her servants. When the sorceress Furta overhears each girl wishing for a different path in life, she casts a magical spell which causes them to switch bodies. This instance proves to be especially problematic when the wicked sorcerer Porcorum makes his nefarious bid to take the kingdom for his own, while also forcing both Iris and Mia to re-examine their priorities and their positions in life. Each playwright will also direct her own play, with Diaz serving as set designer for both productions. Mike Orsillo handles

Brown, who’s 35 years old now and has been making records for the last 10 years, eventually headed north, making her home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She’s been out on tour several times opening for Ani DiFranco over the past couple years, and joining DiFranco as a sort of floating member of the folk-singer’s band for parts of the set. She had just returned a few weeks ago from dates in Europe with DiFranco and on July 22 at 8 p.m., Brown will play Greensboro’s intimate Backyard Stage. Her most recent record, “Silhouette Of Sirens,” came out in May on Red House Records. The album, which is her fifth studio effort, showcases Brown’s singing, which can move from sultry rasp to soulful falsetto. Her songs tackle heartache, struggle, longing and endurance. Fans of artists as diverse as Amos Lee, Al Green, Melissa Etheridge and Prince will find plenty to like about Brown’s style, which blends pop hooks, mellow funk, folk storytelling and flashes of gospel zeal. The record is a full-band affair, but she’s been doing some shows as a duo with guitars and vocals, aided by gadgets. Some of the material on the recent record, her first since 2012’s “Back-Road Highways,” has a brooding, atmospheric quality that still possesses a powerful forward motion, a vaguely retro late-’80s vibe, part Don Henley, part War On Drugs, like on the driving and excellent, “Wake Up.” Brown, who plays mostly guitar and piano, (but who can also play some banjo and saxophone,) said her songs need to be able to stand up in the stripped-

down setting. She said that she and her songwriting partner Robert Mulrennan sometimes evaluate a song based on how strong it is without elaborate accompaniment. “If a song cannot be sung with just an acoustic guitar and a voice, it’s not a strong song,” she said. “It all begins with an acoustic environment.” Her early musical experience in the church may have given Brown the skill and power to propel a song with force of spirit. “When you’re singing gospel, you literally sing from your gut,” she said. “It’s an environment where people are singing out of their emotional experience, as full throttle. That’s how I sing now. It almost seems sometimes like something has taken hold of me.” Brown taps into the emotional experience in her writing, but it’s a fraught exercise. Brown said she’s come to realize that she was capable of becoming detached from her emotions — and not necessarily in a good way — due to traumatic childhood experiences and an abusive stepfather. Trying to probe and explore those feelings as part of writing her most
recent material wasn’t something she particularly enjoyed. “I hope that I do not write another album like this because it was painful,” Brown said. The line between creative candor and a gut-spilling therapy session is one that might be hard to navigate as a songwriter. Artists reveal their inner torment, but they have to learn how to know when the results are going to be meaningful to others. Brown likes to quote author James Baldwin—an idol of hers— who said, “I tell you my pain so that I might relieve you of yours.” In Brown’s case that meant churning out a lot of material that never made the cut. “That’s part of the reason why I think I took so long to write this album,” Brown said. “I wrote shit-tons of songs, and a lot of them were songs that were never meant to leave my living room.” If the emotional excavation of songwriting can involve touching on tender nerves, the musical and melodic aspect of it can be more effortless. Brown describes her ongoing songwriting collaboration
with Mulrennan as one of the coolest, most organic musical experiences she’s ever had. “He can just play a couple chords over and over again, and it evokes a story and a melody, and it falls out of my mouth,” she said. Keeping that creative pipeline open is part of what Brown sees as her job. “The goal is to always write as much as possible, because you just never know, and because it’s fun,” she said. Musicians often have to contend with having their work flattened by a verbal or visual shorthand, whether it’s the genre tag — is it folk, or is it soul, or is it indierock? — or by the kind of aura projected in a promo photo — are they playful or are they solemn? But Brown probably faces an even more relentless set of assumptions based on how she might appear to some. As a biracial woman who’s been in a long-standing relationship with another woman; as someone who plays both electric guitar, banjo, saxophone and piano; and as someone who’s both a northerner and a southerner, there’s a tendency for

people to want to make her music about those kinds of boundary-blurring elements. She remarks that people seem to want to talk about her hair a lot. Brown was raised by the white side of her family and she said she didn’t fully get immersed in black culture until she was a teenager and her sister married into an all-black family. But she’s been energetic about writing her music from and for the marginalized perspective, as she sees it, speaking out in solidarity with Black Lives Matter at her shows, and happily serving as a kind of role model for what she calls the “little-mixed girls” who identify with her because of her family history. On the one hand, Brown is well aware that representations of black and brown women in popular culture — on magazine covers, in politics and on T.V. — are often narrow, and in need of counterbalancing correctives. “Little girls of color really don’t get to see strong women that look like them,” she said. “We’re just not represented in a mass societal way.” At the same time, Brown doesn’t want her role as an artist to be focused on eduWWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
cating white audiences about the experience of being black or brown in America. “I don’t always feel like talking about the experience of being a brown person, just because I would prefer sometimes for the music to speak for itself or speak on my behalf,” Brown said. Her travels around the world, her observational perspective and her focus on a kind of radical empathy — all of it’s taught Brown that certain aspects of human experience are universal. “If you’re poor anywhere in the world, it’s a struggle. If you’ve fallen in love and that love dissipated, it hurts,” Brown said. “Suffering is the same in every language, and so is joy.” ! JOHN ADAMIAN lives in Winston-Salem, and his writing has appeared in Wired, The Believer, Relix, Arthur, Modern Farmer, the Hartford Courant and numerous other publications.

Robert Dubac’s The Book of Moron January 18-21, 2018 (5 shows) Robert Dubac’s newest Off-Broadway solo hit, THE BOOK OF MORON, has been described as one of the most “Hilarious” “Intelligent” and “Scorching” satirical attacks on idiocracy since Mark Twain. (And “idiocracy” isn’t even a word. How dumb is that?) Are you are craving for some satire that cuts with a clever intelligent edge? Are you are tired of adolescent comedies generated by the mediocrity of television? Then buckle them up for a hilarious joy ride over the pot-holed highways of cultural hypocrisy with Robert Dubac’s The Book Of Mormon. www.RobertDubac.com Disenchanted: The Hilarious Hit Musical March 21-25, 2018 (6 shows) Poisoned apples. Glass slippers. Who needs ‘em?! Not Snow White and her posse of disenchanted princesses in the hilarious hit musical that’s anything but Grimm. Forget the princesses you think you know – the original storybook heroines have come back to life to set the record straight. Hail, Caesar: Sturdy sequel offers ample monkey business BY MATT BRUNSON The third chapter in the latest incarnation of the venerable monkey-movie series, War for the Planet of the Apes follows last week’s Spider-Man: Homecoming as an example of how to allow a franchise to continue to expand and breathe rather than trying to keep it mired in by-the-numbers numbness. While it doesn’t quite match its immediate predecessor, 2014’s masterful Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, this latest entry admirably opts to forge its own path rather than slavishly cut and paste past formulas. While the series opener, 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, spent slightly more time on the humans and Dawn divided its focus equally between humans and apes, War almost completely adopts the point of view of the simians. At its center, of course, is Caesar (a motion-captured Andy Serkis), who doesn’t actively seek conflict but instead wants apes to be left alone. Unfortunately, the members of a nearby military outfit don’t share Caesar’s separatist policy —
led by an imposing figure known only as The Colonel (Woody Harrelson), they seek to completely obliterate all apes. Harrelson is generally employed in roles that provide plenty of opportunities for sarcastic asides (The Hunger Games, The Edge of Seventeen, etc.), so it’s almost startling to see him tackling a character as savage and single-minded as the one he essays here. The Colonel may be utterly venal, but there’s a method to his madness, and while it never really makes him sympathetic, it does add some interesting shadings to the part. Serkis again excels in the role that arguably will surpass Gollum as his most iconic, and while I could have used a bit less of Bad Ape (Steve Zahn), a lonely and simple-minded simian, writer-director Matt Reeves and co-scripter Mark Bomback are nevertheless careful to avoid turning him into merely a one-note figure who pops up at regular intervals to offer strained comic relief. Instead, War for the Planet of the Apes remains rigidly dank and dour — for those seeking mirthful monkeyshines, there’s always Clint’s pal Clyde. !

Scoops! Fantastically frozen treats of the Triad
By Rich Lewis
S
ummer’s here, and it’s another hot one with high humidity and no breaks from 90 plus degree days in sight. It makes you wonder how people survived here before the advent of central air. Luckily, folks in the Triad have been blessed with all sorts of frozen treats to get them through these tough months. Whether you prefer the classic ice creams, upscale gelatos, infinitely tunable cups of frozen yogurt or the heavy luxury of frozen custards, there’s something for you out there. Let us help you take a cooling tour of the Triad’s best and favorite purveyors of icy desserts and distractions.
Sam’s Ice Cream (Clemmons and Lexington) Since 2012, folks in Clemmons, North Carolina, have been heading over to Sam’s Ice Cream for great ice cream, sundaes and other sweettreats. Owner Karim Eltokhy said the business originally opened in Greensboro’s Four Seasons Mall back in 2008 but moved out to Clemmons in 2012. Since, they’ve quickly become a happy part of the community. Priding themselves on community and customer service, he said the family business is open seven days a week, year-round, only closing at Christmas and Thanksgiving. The popularity of the Clemmons shop led to the opening of a second location in Lexington, North Carolina, recently. While it also features all the ice cream and frozen treats the original Sam’s is famous for, the Lexington location also offers hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken wings. It is quickly becoming a spot where local folks take their families for a treat.

Gnam Gnam’s Gelato (Greensboro) Gnam Gnam’s Gelato has quickly established itself as one of the premier gelato makers in North Carolina. Gnam Gnam began as a retail location and bistro, but now the company is moving to a different business model, owner Selim Oztalay said. As word spread of their creations, demand for wholesale gelato (headed to restaurants and other establishments) grew quickly. Their gelato has been found at local Wolfgang Puck restaurants and numerous special events. They’ve even been vendors at some PGA Tour events, introducing their products to folks from around the country and the world. As part of the new move, they will also be offering to franchise and licensing opportunities, Oztalay said. Individuals could purchase their own Gnam Gnam’s Gelato carts and take them to events, serving up gelato and other treats. While the Gnam Gnam’s cart is seen at numerous events in the area, he explained that they are often double and triple booked. Oztalay said they will be introducing specialty made, gourmet popsicles a bit later in the year. The popsicles, he explained, will come in many flavors, often with layer upon layer of flavors. While Gnam Gnam’s Gelato will be closing its retail portion of its storefront at 2248 Golden Gate Drive, they will retain the location as the home base for their continued operations. If you need them to make an appearance at an event or need wholesale amounts of frozen treats, give them a call at 336-288-8008.
Mayberry Ice Cream Shoppe (Greensboro) The Mayberry Ice Cream name has been a mainstay in the Triad for generations, and it still lives on today in Greensboro at the Mayberry Ice Cream Shoppe. Led by owner Linda Surber, Mayberry’s is a throwback to a happy, simpler time when the local restaurant and ice cream parlor was a hub in the community. Located in what might well be the first shopping center built in the city of Greensboro, Mayberry offers a bit of history along with your treats. The original stools at the dairy bar are still in use, and the décor has a bit of that mythical, yesteryear feel that just can’t be faked. A full slate of ice cream flavors and creations, including sundaes, shakes, and banana splits are available, all hand scooped to order. Also, it is a full-scale sandwich shop that’s quite well-known for its homemade chicken salad and egg salad, along with the classics like hot dogs and hamburgers. Located at 96 Summit Avenue in Greensboro, Mayberry Ice Cream Shoppe is open seven days a week, with hours 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
Whit’s Frozen Custard (Kernersville) If you’re not familiar with the idea of frozen custards, you’re in for a treat at Whit’s Frozen Custard located in Kernersville. The heavier, richer treat has a taste and feels all to its own, and while it is still a newcomer in the South, it’s bound to become a local favorite way to beat the heat. Store owner Melinda Moore explained that the frozen custard is made on-premises and fresh every morning to ensure the highest quality of taste and product. Each day they make the classic vanilla and chocolate varieties, along with a flavor of the week and a special flavor of the day. While it might seem like a small selection to choose from, there are also over 50 toppings to work with, per-

While the shop has been a hit for years, they’ve also decided to take their show on the road and out into the community. Purchasing a food truck this year, they are quickly becoming a feature at local festivals and events, offering frozen desserts to people out in the heat. They are also booking appearances at block parties, church events and company picnics. Brynn’s Frozen Yogurt is located at 205 S. Stratford Road in Winston-Salem. They are open Tuesday throughThursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 pm. If you’d like more information about having the Brynn’s Frozen Yogurt truck at your event, please call 336-331-3935.

Moore explained that frozen custards are more common in New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. “We’ve had to educate people as to what it is, but once they try it, they fall in love with it,” Moore said. Whit’s Frozen Custard is open seven days a week from noon until 10 p.m., except noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays. Located at 508 E. Mountain St., Whit’s also offers frozen custard cakes and novelties along with fantastic cookies. Give them a call at 336-497-5485.
Brynn’s Frozen Yogurt (Winston-Salem) One of the best-frozen yogurt bars in the Triad, Brynn’s Frozen Yogurt has been a mainstay of Winston-Salem’s Stratford Road are for almost eight years now. Owned by Leon Guyen, Brynn’s has made its mark with inventive, classic flavors and a wide variety of toppings that suit every taste. Guyen said they offer about 12 assorted flavors of frozen yogurt each day and their toppings bars feature over 145 add-ons to make your own creations. He said they pride themselves on offering as many organic fruits and toppings as possible, along with seasonal, local fruit produce from the Piedmont Farmer’s Market. They also feature Ghirardelli chocolates and sauces.

Ozzie’s Ice Cream Shop (Greensboro) If you’ve been on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro in the last couple of years, you’ve probably seen or stopped by Ozzie’s Ice Cream Shop. A favorite of travelers along the city’s Greenway, Ozzie’s is an ice cream parlor featuring ice cream from two premier companies, Blue Bell and Hershey’s. You can get hand dipped scoops and cups of any of some flavors, as well as sundaes, milkshakes, malts and floats. You can enjoy your treats at one of the many outdoor tables and seating is available inside on those days when it’s rainy or just a bit too hot for comfort. The community atmosphere makes the whole experience even better, and your dogs are welcome, too. of folks waiting for their servings of this classic Italian treat. He rotates through an almost limitless variety of flavors including local favorites cappuccino crunch, strawberry cheesecake and cookies and cream. Ice Scraperz (Greensboro) The hottest thing in frozen treats this summer might very well be Greensboro’s own Ice Scraperz. One of the newest players on the scene, Ice Scraperz has certainly been a hit with their new take on the classic treat. Owner Wendy Meredith explained that Ice Scraperz opened June 1 this year and they’ve already had to double their equipment to keep up with demand. The big draw is that they take classic flavors of ice cream and then flatten it on sub zero antigriddles, working in flavorings and then use scrapers to roll the ice cream up into fluffy frozen cylinders. The ice cream is arranged into cups and then topped with all sorts of sweets. Meredith said she had seen a video of it being done on YouTube a while back and then started searching for a place that did it in the U.S. As a resident of Florida at that time, she finally found a place in Tampa that did rolled ice cream She tried it and immediately fell in love. She and her husband then cashed in their retirement, headed north to Greensboro and opened the first one of these in the area. It has gone like gangbusters so far, and you really should head over to their location at 1941 New Garden Road, Suite 106. You can also check them out at their website: www.icescraperz.com.

Café Gelato (Winston-Salem) If you take 15 years of experience cooking internationally and turn it loose on the local gelato scene, you’d get Winston-Salem’s Café Gelato. Owned and operated by Ciska Weber, (who is a native of Holland,) the local gelato maker offers a selection of flavors both classic and inventive. Weber explained all their gelato is made on site, using premium ingredients imported from Italy as well as local fresh fruits as they come into season. While the shop always has classic flavors like chocolate, lemon, berry and mango on hand, you can also find flavors like coffee and gingerbread among their nine daily selections. For the adventurous, she also makes some with herbal or floral notes like lemon-basil and elder flower. In addition to freshly made gelato, the shop also sells wine and specialty coffees. Located near Reynolds High School, Café Gelato has quickly become a favorite of young people, and it has been right in the middle of the neighborhood renaissance in that area. Artsy and laid back, it¢s a great place for a quick stop and a treat on a hot summer day. You can find Café Gelato at 845 Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem, directly across from Hanes Park. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday noon to 9 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays. For more information, call 336-725-9110 or look them up on Facebook.
It’s certainly one of the largest frozen yogurt places in the entire Triad by square footage, but Di’lishi’s Frozen Yogurt Bar might just have one of the biggest hearts in the business, too. The Battleground Avenue favorite mixes frozen treats and community service into something everyone can get behind. Owner Cindy Snider opened the shop in 2013 after a career as a local school teacher, and true to her nature she’s made it into a place where the fun comes with a bit of learning along the way. Offering a full slate of frozen yogurts on tap (plus at least one sorbet selection) and over 60 toppings each day, Di’lishi has all the classic froyo attractions, plus they offer fro-yo smoothies and frozen yogurt pies (whole and by the slice). They offer large seating areas, including a soft-seating area with couches and television, and even a special party room. Di’lishi also has a community give back program. Snider explained they do three voting periods each year with instore displays of three local nonprofit charities. Customers can learn about each of the charities and their impact on the community. They can also vote to support one by dropping special voting spoons into bins for each. At the end of the period, each charity receives a donation based on the spoons they collected. Andy’s Frozen Custard (High Point) For the last year, folks in High Point and the surrounding area have been treated to the classic creations of Andy’s Frozen Custard. Frozen custard, for those new to the idea, is a type of ice cream that is whipped less in the creation process. It makes for a denser, richer taste and feels and allows it to be held frozen at warmer temperatures (generally between 18 and 23 degrees F). At Andy’s they serve it up in cups and cones, as well as in shakes, sundaes, malts and the classic banana split. They also serve concretes and have become famous for

Yum Yum’s Ice Cream and Hotdogs (Greensboro) No story about ice cream and summer in the Triad would be complete without the granddaddy of them all, Yum Yum’s Ice Cream and Hotdogs. Winner of this year’s best hot dogs and ice cream in the Triad, Yum Yum’s has been a Greensboro institution since 1906. Yum Yum’s was a hit for the Aydelette family from its beginnings as a pushcart operation in downtown Greensboro to its current location on Spring Garden Street. It has been churning out the ice cream and world famous red hot dogs from the heart of the UNCG campus for generations. There’s no telling how many people have made their stop at Yum Yum’s the best part of their day, whether they are inside, at one of the outdoor tables or made their mark sitting on the long retaining wall out front. It has been a tough year for Yum Yum’s as they were forced to close for nine days after a customer’s car accidentally hit and damaged the building. Not long after they got up and running again, the family patriarch and Yum Yum’s veteran Bernard Aydelette also passed away. Yum Yum’s, and the Aydelettes have continued, though, handing out cones, hot dogs and smiles to children, students, workers and senior citizens alike. Yum Yum’s Ice Cream and Hotdogs is located at 1219 Spring Garden Street in Greensboro. They are open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays and Mondays 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
MATT’S GELATO
Feeney’s Frozen Yogurt Bar (Greensboro, High Point) As pioneers in the frozen yogurt field, Feeney’s was the first frozen yogurt bar in the Triad to use the self-serve, pick your own toppings arrangement. It has certainly been a hit, and with two locations, Feeney’s is still going strong! Each location offers eight different flavors of soft serve frozen yogurt or sorbets, with selections changing as often as each day. Feeny’s also offers low-calorie options along with gelatos and nondairy sorbets to fit everyone’s tastes and needs. And you can always mix and match the frozen treats to create your own concoctions and then top them off with everything from cookie crumbles, candy bits, fresh fruit, breakfast cereals, chocolate rocks and of course hot fudge, whipped cream and other delights. Feeney’s can also come to you for your special events and occasions, with a frozen yogurt cart to brighten up your event. Also, the High Point location can also host birthday parties and other gatherings. Feel free to contact them through email at feeneysfroyo@aol.com for bookings.
The fine folks behind Winston’s beloved West End Coffeehouse are also the driving force behind Twin City Gelato, a company that has been producing some of the most innovative gelato flavors in the region. Co-owner Dana Moody said Twin City Gelato has been making their frozen treats for the past four years, often with locally grown fruits and produce to create almost unbelievable flavors. They’ve showcased flavors like sweet corn and blueberry, lemon rosemary, goat cheese and roasted cherries, Sriracha chocolate, white chocolate banana toffee and much, much more. The Coffeehouse’s mixed coffee drinks have been an inspiration as well. Flavors change regularly, so stop by often to get a new taste of inspiration. Twin City Gelato also presents a whole host of desserts, from concoctions using gelato to Affogatos (think of a gelato sundae topped with whipped cream, chocolate, caramel and a bit of zip from hot espresso poured over it) to their locally famous brownie sundaes. Gelato pops and paletas (a Latin-American popsicle-like treat famous for wild flavors and textures) are also new additions worth a try! Twin City Gelato is located at 390 N. Broad St. in Winston-Salem and they are open seven days per week. Hours vary by the season, so check them out on Instagram and Facebook for more details. Also, look for them at local festivals and events. ! RICH LEWIS is a father, husband, writer and cook who makes his home in Greensboro, NC.

Kaleideum After Dark Formerly known as the Children’s Museum of WinstonSalem, Kaleideum Downtown merged with SciWorks on July 1, 2016. Kaleideum After Dark is an event that gives adults the chance to Katie Murawski be kids again while enjoying alcoholic beverages, discoverEditor ing the museum and listening to live music. On July 14, Kaleideum Downtown held its second After Dark event of the year and featured the local band The Genuine. Heather Moore assistant director of development said Kaleideum is a “museum for everyone, not just the children.” Moore said Kaleideum After Dark is targeted for anyone 21 and up. She said it is for people who might not have kids that can never come to the museum because they are still in college. It is an event also for young families that want to bring their children to date night to play while they enjoy wine, beer and live music. “We really want the community to feel like they are part of the museum,” Moore said. “That is why we want to do events like this to make sure everyone here feels welcomed. Moore said Kaleideum After Dark happens four times a year and alternates between the North and Downtown campus. The next After Dark event will

be at Kaleideum North on Oct. 6, and the theme will be Oktoberfest, Moore said. “There will be seasonal fall beers, maybe ciders and we have talked to Lowes Foods who want to come out and put a table up with different sausages,” Moore said. Jacinta White said the band is what
drew her to come to Kaleideum After Dark. She said it was fun to be there because she was able to make some crafts with her friends as well as drink and see one of her favorite local bands. “I love their melody and their soulfulness of their singing,” White said. “So, when I found out there was here tonight is
the reason why I came. I am glad Kaleideum is putting these events on for adults, I signed up for the mailing list, and I plan to be back.” To find out more information on Kaleideum After Dark visit: www.kaleideum. org !

[HOROSCOPES]
[LEO (July 23 to August 22) Mars, the warrior, enters your sign this week and will be traveling with you for seven weeks. This energy is especially helpful in defining our boundaries. Periodically we need to examine who we are as well as who we are not. Often something is eliminated. In general, it represents an increase of your courage and physical strength. [VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your ability to concentrate upon projects that require management of details is strong. Organizing files, closets and cabinets will clear the clutter from your mind. Fortunately, you are able to make mindful decisions. If information is needed, you can find it readily. The week favors education in practical skills. [LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You may encounter someone who wants to argue about a subject that has no end, i.e. religion or politics. Remember that what you think is not who you are. It is an opinion, only, and doesn’t deserve a battle to the death. Make note of any developments that seem meaningful and “supposed” to happen between you and another. [SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) From now through early September, your attention will be drawn to career and life direction. Activity in your outer world picks up speed. Authorities and others may be challenging, so have your ducks in a row if you take initiatives. Use this time to improve your “product” or your presentation. [SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Good news comes from a distance or perhaps on the internet. Activities involving the law, travel, the church, distant communications and/or publishing are favored. Personal relationships may be difficult for a short time this week. Check the lead paragraph.

[CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A tenant or an employee may be challenging. It is annoying, but not the end of the world. You are coming upon a significant change next winter. Perhaps the events of this week will press you toward that shift. There may be a need to focus on matters of your body, especially related to teeth, skin and bones. [AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) If you are stymied, don’t hesitate to consult a professional who is likely to have the information you need. Your partner may take on an uncharacteristic manner of self-assertion. He or she is not so likely to back down from a fight. Life will be generally more harmonious if you avoid the hot topics. [PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You or someone else may want you to feel guilty because you are unable to make things better. Recognize that you are not the magician you would like to be and let go of the guilt. Whatever happens now, you are highly prone to think dark thoughts about yourself. This is passing. Let it go. [ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Rise above the mundane situation and see the bigger picture of your relationship(s). Metaphorically we bring people into our lives to help teach us what we need to know. If the personality of another person irritates you, then there is something important to learn about yourself. Maybe there is a truth that you have been avoiding and this irksome person is present as a teacher. [TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Read the lead paragraph because at this time it especially pertains to you. The crux of the stressor may be in the areas of shared resources. That includes time, money, or resources that you share with another or with the greater community. That could include money or social security, taxes, insurance and/or debts. [GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You are likely making improvements in your home or property. You’ll be updating the old with something new and contemporary. Mercury, the ruler of communications, is involved so it may have to do with computing and microchips. [CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Give special attention to unusual messages or to new people who enter your life during this time. A “teacher” crosses your path in the form of a person, a book, or the right message that will steer you in the next favorable direction. Are you interested in a personal horoscope? PLENTY OF DEAD FISH
My girlfriend and I broke up recently, so I’m back in the dating pool. Do you think online dating is a good way to meet people? If so, which are the best dating sites? — Diving In
Amy Alkon
Advice Goddess
Asking “Which dating site is best?” is like asking, “Is pro basketball a viable career?” That question can only be answered by asking other questions, such as: “Aren’t you a 47-year-old, 5’2” Ashkenazi Jewish woman with 20/80 vision and bad knees?” To put this another way, context matters — which isn’t what they tell you in Datingsiteville. Save for specialty sites — like those for farmers, the disabled, and people who relish a good flogging — the advertising for these venues tends to be context-free: “Hey, everybody in the entire galaxy, get your lasting love here!” Annoyingly, though most of us have a sense of what context is, nobody’s done a very good job of defining it — either in the dictionary or in Researchville, where I found a herd of dueling definitions, all so unhelpfully worded that they seem to be in secret code. So here’s my definition: Context is a combo platter of the particular situation at hand — like pro basketball, online dating, being a bad dancer, or being sexually attracted to
woodchucks — plus the details relevant to it that affect how you understand or experience the situation. In the context of online dating, the relevant details include age, sex, the quality of the competition, and one’s desired situation, as in: Do you just want casual sex, or are you holding out for something a little more, uh, black tie. There are sex differences in when people are at their most appealing, because men and women tend to be at their highest “mate value” at different ages. This comes out of how male sexuality evolved to be visually driven (because the features men find beautiful — youth being the biggie — are associated with fertility). Women, however, evolved to go for “providers” — men with high status and earning power. So, online dating tends to be more fruitful if you’re a hot 23-year-old female espresso jockey or a 43-year-old male VP of a successful startup, but it can have some challenges for the 43-year-old female startup star or the 23-year-old dude who’s the senior vice barista. So the question is not whether dating sites work but whether the qualities you have and the situation you’re seeking add up to more than a few tumbleweeds blowing around in your inbox. Because online dating success is shaped more by personal context (and plain old luck) than by the particular site you’re on, you might experiment with two or three. If things go poorly, use online dating as a supplement to meeting women the retro way, like at cocktail parties, where you won’t be competing with the 362 more genetically blessed males within a
35-mile radius. This vastly increases your chances of dazzling the ladies with your personality — distracting them from how Mother Nature zoned out when she was handing out necks to your family.
MAN ON THE FLAKE
This guy asked me out and suggested we meet up after his dentist appointment. He said he’d call around 2 p.m. Well, at 9:30 p.m., I got a “Hey” text from him and didn’t respond. A friend said I shouldn’t write him off so fast. Am I being too harsh? — Dependability Fan Individual bits of behavior are like cockroaches. You might see just one lonely roach twerking atop the toaster oven, but its presence suggests a whole colony of the buggers...gluing sequins to their exoskeletons and practicing their moonwalk behind the baseboard. No, you can’t always judge someone by a single thing they do, but this guy’s one-word text — seven hours after he said he’d call — speaks volumes: “Holy moly, wouldya look at the time. It’s 9:30, and I could use some sex.” How a person behaves is driven by
their personality traits, which social psychologist Brent Roberts describes as habitual patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behavior that are relatively consistent across time and situations. Granted, there are occasions when impulse gets the best of us, and we’ll say something like, “That wasn’t really me.” But, at least in some way, it really was, because even impulsivity is part of personality. A person can resolve to act more conscientiously, but personality has a strong genetic basis, so they’re unlikely to be as motivated to be conscientious as someone whose genes make them feel icky when they aren’t. In other words, you were probably wise in nixing this guy, who couldn’t even be bothered to fake respect for your feelings by supplementing that “Hey” with “Carjacked!” “Carried off by a raptor!” or “Still high on anesthesia in my blanket fort, having a tea party with G.I. Joe and my dog, Steve.” ! GOT A problem?
