This Memorial Day weekend is the NC WINE FESTIVAL at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. About 40 wineries and a handful of North Carolina breweries will be represented along with food vendors, craft vendors and music. 10 MARY’S HOUSE is a big wood panelled home that blends in with its neighbors on Guilford Avenue. There is a small “Safe Place” sign attached to the porch, but no obvious clue that the unassuming shelter has spent the past 20 years giving Greensboro’s most vulnerable mothers and children a second chance at life. 11 This year marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar-winning screen version of THE GODFATHER, so Fathom Events has teamed up with TCM Big Screen Classics to make movie mavens an offer they can’t refuse... 12 The South Carolina band SUSTO take their name from a Spanish word for a kind of spiritual crisis or rupture. A state of panic and feeling lost. A cosmic freakout with folk-religious implications. It’s a concept lifted from Latin American culture, but the name suits the band’s music...

This spring’s GEARS & GUITARS music festival – a series of concerts performed in conjunction with the WinstonSalem Cycling Classic – will take place May 26-29. All the concerts will be at Bailey Park in downtown Winston-Salem and will conclude with a free Memorial Day performance on Monday, May 29. 21 ANNIE is a spunky Depression-era orphan who gets the chance to leave the New York City Orphanage, run by the cruel and embittered Miss Hannigan, and stay at the mansion of billionaire Oliver Warbucks for the holidays. When Annie wins the hearts of “Daddy” Warbucks and his staff, they set out on an epic mission to find Annie’s parents. 22 Perhaps mindful of the criticism yet not completely willing to dumb down the franchise, Scott has returned with ALIEN: COVENANT, a movie that adds more action to the mix while also keeping the more philosophical points intact. Ironically, Scott will doubtless still get blasted by the naysayers, since fanboys are sure to gripe about the mixing and matching of styles.

Celebrating North Carolina wine
BY KRISTI MAIER | @triadfoodies
W
e are in the throes of Spring and our North Carolina wine region is enjoying a few festivals across our fruited valley. This Memorial Day weekend is the NC Wine Festival at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. About 40 wineries and a handful of North Carolina breweries will be represented along with food vendors, craft vendors and music. Want to grab some vino and spread out on a blanket or set up picnic style? This festival is for you. Wine will be available to sample as well as purchase by the glass, bottle or case. This year marks the NC Wine Festival’s 17th year. The group, “Chairmen of the Board” is the main headliner with other acts throughout the day. On June 3, the 12th annual Salute! music and lots and lots of wine. But in addition to the state’s newest favorite fruit and the stories of the winemakers, Salute celebrates local chefs and the restaurants along its footprint. If you can’t find some grub at one of the trucks at Salute, there’s a sure bet you’ll find something delicious at one of the many downtown restaurants on Fourth Street and further out from “Restaurant Row.” Salute features several events throughout the week leading up to the festival, including wine and a movie at a/perture cinema with the documentary film, “American Wine Story.” Filmgoers get a glass of wine and the movie. The local paired winery is Hanover Park Vineyard. After the film, winemakers Amy and Michael Helton will briefly tell their own wine story as one of the oldest vineyards in the state. On Friday, the annual An Evening of Southern Food opens the festivities with celebrity chef Lucey Buffett, author of the book, “Gumbo Love.” You may think the name is familiar, she’s the sister of singer Jimmy Buffett (no, he’s not scheduled to appear). An Evening of Southern Food also celebrates local chefs, Jeff Bacon of Triad Community Kitchen and Providence Restaurant and Paul Schender of Garner Foods & Texas Pete. Chef Buffett will be the feature presentation as she explores classic southern dishes step-by-step, MAY 24-30, 2017 - TRIAD’S BEST OF
interacting with the audience along the way. A few North Carolina wines will be available to sample by the glass. After the gates open at Salute on Saturday, more than 40 wineries and vendors will be lined up along Fourth Street between Marshall and Broad streets as well as Spruce and Poplar streets. Wineries will be sampling their wine and selling by the glass, bottle or case. Jason Thiel, president of the Downtown WinstonSalem Partnership says, “Salute is a great combination of music, food and wine all in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem. People have a great time.” Of course when it comes to wine, food is always a topic of conversation. That’s where North Carolina Food and Wine University comes in. FWU is an interactive tent with multiple chefs and cooking demonstrations throughout the day. Each dish is one that the “student” can make at home. Winemakers have been chosen for the pairing of that dish. The winemaker will also present the wine and explain how the wine best complements the food. Guests will then get a chance to swirl, sniff and sample the wine. Here’s the schedule:

Mary’s House Makes a Home for Greensboro’s Most Vulnerable BY MIA OSBORN
M
ary’s House is a big wood panelled home that blends in with its neighbors on Guilford Avenue. There is a small “Safe Place” sign attached to the porch, but no obvious clue that the unassuming shelter has spent the past 20 years giving Greensboro’s most vulnerable mothers and children a second chance at life. Since Mary’s House opened in 1996, the shelter has celebrated the births of 39 sober babies. Women who have completed a stay at Mary’s House have a 90% success rate in transitioning to permanent housing, and 96% of them have stayed sober. A sister shelter, Mary’s Home, opened in 2005 with the same goal: to create a peaceful, loving home environment where women and their children can learn the skills they need to join the community. “This is where you make the mistakes,” said Executive Director Jacqueline Phillips. “This is where you learn to communicate with another person. This is where you learn to say, ‘I can’t do this,’ and then we figure out how you can.” Mary’s House serves homeless mothers over the age of 21 with children under the age of 10 and with a history of substance abuse. Greensboro is home to several organizations that shelter the homeless or rehabilitate those with addictions, but Mary’s House is unique for the specific slice of the population it helps, and for the length of stay it allows residents. “We are probably the only organization
in the area that offers transitional housing for up to 15 months,” said Phillips. Phillips has been at the helm of Mary’s House for two years, but she has been involved with the ministry since she was a graduate student at UNCG, when she took an internship teaching parenting classes there. She never left, except to get a second master’s degree in rehabilitation counselling so that she could better serve the residents. Phillips’ original background in child education and development is still at the core of her philosophy for Mary’s House. “To me, the bottom line is education,” said Phillips. “It helps the moms in all facets of their lives.”

Like a school day, residents’ time at Mary’s House is strictly scheduled. They must be up by 7 a.m. to attend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings at 7:30. Some then go to work or in search of work, while others attend GED prep courses or classes in parenting, home care, financial management and nutrition. Phillips tries to train residents in a wide range of life skills to give them their best shot at breaking the cycle of homelessness. In many cases, psychotherapy or other mental health care is also needed. According to Phillips, mental health is a crucial underlying factor in many cases of drug abuse or homelessness. “A lot of times you’re looking at substance use disorder, but you’re also looking at mental health,” she said. “When I look at applications and I see that this person started using alcohol at the age of 11, I know something went very, very wrong.” No matter what the mothers who come to Phillips have been through, she strives to help each of them come to terms with their past and teach them how to go forward with their dignity restored. “I hate to use the word addict,” said Phillips. “I look at it this way: I see a strong person inside that person, someone who wants to heal and grow, to come back out into society. Here, their children are able to grow with them.” Mothers at Mary’s House progress through a level system, starting as guests and moving up to seniors. With each level come privileges as well as responsibilities. The kids at Mary’s House go through no such system, but they also learn how a
stable home feels. “They’re learning how to share, they’re learning how to be with each other,” said Phillips. “They argue, they make fun of each other, and they get put in time out together, just like brothers and sisters.” Phillips feels overwhelmed by the generous donations given to these kids and their mothers by the community, especially around the holidays. “During Christmas we had so many churches involved. It was heartfelt, and it humbled me to see all those people come together to help. I was getting so many gifts from both outside and inside, the room next door was full,” Phillips said. As much joy as these donations of toys and clothing have been for the residents, donations of money and time are what Mary’s House needs most; volunteer applications for child care workers, tutors, repair people and clerical workers can be found on their web site. The house has a fleet of donated children’s bicycles and a jungle gym in the backyard, but still strains to pay for necessities like residents’ medications, food, and diapers, not to mention supplemental rent for those families who have recently moved out on their own. The financial burden has increased since 2016, when Mary’s House lost funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which wanted to prioritize fast transitions into permanent housing, instead of the longer, development centered program that Mary’s House was built on. “HUD was going with the Housing First Initiative, and we wanted to stick with our mission of education,” Phillips explained. Despite the financial and emotional challenges of overseeing the community’s most vulnerable families, Phillips is determined to fight for the women and children she represents. She wants to obtain a grant for child care to help residents with jobs, and to one day procure nearby apartments that former residents can use as a first step in their transition to independent life. Phillips said she draws strength and inspiration from the mothers and children she lives with; in the end, the education at Mary’s House goes both ways. “I’ve learned so much from these women. It’s amazing, the strength it takes to walk through that door and say, ‘I’m tired of being on drugs.’” said Phillips. “It’s hard enough raising children. If they can parent through this, my hat’s off to them.” To volunteer, donate, or apply to stay at Mary’s House, visit www.maryshousegso. org. !

The Godfather returns to the big screen the public and the critics. The Godfather is ranked second on the list of the greatest American films, behind only Citizen Kane (1941). The film won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Brando – who famously refused the award – as well as earning nominations for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Pacino, Caan and Duvall), Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, and Best Original Score, although the latter nomination was later rescinded when it came to light that composer Nino Rota has reused previously released music. Not only was The Godfather the biggest hit of 1972, it was for a time the highestgrossing film in Hollywood history. It was followed in 1974 by The Godfather – Part II, which matched its predecessor’s acclaim if not its financial success, and Coppola completed the trilogy in 1990 with The Godfather – Part III. !
BY MARK BURGER This year marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar-winning screen version of The Godfather, so Fathom Events has teamed up with TCM Big Screen Classics to make movie mavens an offer they can’t refuse (sorry, couldn’t resist) – as they bring this crime saga back to the big screen in June. Having brought back such classics as Dr. Strangelove (1964), Jaws (1975), National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978), Thelma and Louise (1991), From Here to Eternity (1953), and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel (1956) – to say nothing of the ever-popular “RiffTrax” screenings – Fathom will present The Godfather for two showings on Sunday, June 4, followed by encore screenings on Wednesday, June 7. Of 700 theaters around the nation, there are three theaters in the Piedmont Triad region that are hosting The Godfather: Brassfield Cinema 10, Greensboro Grande Stadium 16, and the Grand 12 – Four Seasons Station. Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel The Godfather was a mammoth worldwide best-seller, and Paramount Pictures had optioned it for screen treatment. A number of highprofile directors were either considered or rejected the opportunity to make the film, including Sergio Leone, Arthur Penn, Otto Preminger, Peter Yates, and Richard Brooks. When Coppola came aboard the project, he and Puzo collaborated on the screenplay. Pre-production proved so turbulent that Coppola suspected he would be replaced, but when he won the Oscar for the screenplay of Patton (1970) talk of his dismissal dissipated. The pivotal role of Don Vito Corleone was among the most sought-after roles of the time, but Coppola was insistent that Marlon Brando – then labeled “box-office poison” after a string of big-budget flops – portray the patriarch of the Corleone clan. His iconic performance was an immediate sensation, and The Godfather also gave major career boosts to co-stars Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, and John Cazale (in his WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

screen debut). In many ways, The Godfather is the quintessential American story, dramatizing the darker aspects of the American dream. The old adage applies: Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Yet it certainly struck a nerve with both

Susto play Gears & Guitars Festival with Barenaked Ladies
BY JOHN ADAMIAN | @johnradamian
T
he South Carolina band Susto take their name from a Spanish word for a kind of spiritual crisis or rupture. A state of panic and feeling lost. A cosmic freakout with folk-religious implications. It’s a concept lifted from Latin American culture, but the name suits the band’s music, which has lyrical dark streaks that suggest the experience of someone who nearly came apart at the seams, but found his way back from the brink with a bundle of world wisdom and insights. Susto’s music can sound like Mumford & Sons, the Avett Brothers, Jackson Browne or the Wallflowers, with a gently worn country-rock texture and a whiff of roadweathered Americana. The tempos aren’t ever agitated, nor are they so slow as to be despondent. Pretty harmonies pop up, along with mellow organ, slide, acoustic guitars and brushes on the snare drum. But singer Justin Osborne takes things to a more extreme and real place with his lyrics, a zone where redemption and even survival are not a given. His songs have a kinship with bands like the Hold Steady, Drive-By Truckers and Deer Tick, bands that map out the ways that individual searchers can get shipwrecked on the rocks or pulled out to sea by the forces of mass religion and substance abuse in contemporary America. I spoke with

Osborne last week as the band continued between stops on what amounts to one epic tour for 2017. The band did a string of dates opening for the Lumineers earlier this year, and they’ve done a number of dates headlining as well. “We’ve been on tour all year this year, but we were on tour all year last year,” says Osborne. “It’s been rigorous.” Susto bring their music to WinstonSalem as a part of the Gears & Guitars festival. They’ll be opening the bill with Edwin McCain and Barenaked Ladies at 7 p.m on Sunday, May 28 at Bailey Park in Winston-Salem. The festival is a four-day event in downtown Winston-Salem. The festival runs Friday, May 26 through Sunday, May 28. Corey Smith with Eric Dodd and Muscadine Bloodline play Friday. Collective Soul and Tonic play Saturday. The road is a near-constant reality for some bands. And the dislocation can become its own state of being for some artists. “I love it that the road never ends,” sings Osborne on “Wasted Mind,” a song that brings to mind My Morning Jacket, Jerry Jeff Walker and Hiss Golden Messenger. “Hustling through cities but we never even really arrive,” goes one line on the same song, capturing the romance of rootlessness. The band released its second record, & I’m Fine Today, at the start of this year. One of the things that strikes me about
WWW.YESWEEKLY.COMW
WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY SAY! Susto is the way that Osborne comes out swinging with his lyrics. Many of the first lines on these songs are arresting if not startling. They conjure scenes of desperation, ecstasy, nightmares, substance abuse and faith. “You could be comatose in a parking lot,” goes the first line on “Far Out Feeling,” the first song on the record. It’s a song filled with conditional, hypothetical statements like that. And then it takes a turn toward the concrete. “My mom’s on her knees saying prayers for the afterlife, while I’m living in heaven on earth,” sings Osborne. The second track, “Hard Drugs,” opens with these lines “I had a dream that we were doing hard drugs in a street alley.” The third song, “Waves,” opens like this: “Is there anybody in there/Smoking weed with God?” And the fourth track gets you with its title alone: “Gay in the South.” It’s a song that seems to allude to the complexities of being raised in a conservative Christian family and growing apart from the faith, watching people’s identities come in conflict with their upbringings, etc. But these aren’t simple stories about being strong and staying true to yourself. It’s all more complicated than that. “Tell the truth, unless you think you should lie,” sings Osborne, a line which would seem funny if simple self-preservation didn’t demand some degree of falsehood in certain settings. It’s almost as if Osborne is a songwriter who subscribes to those bits of interpersonal advice about making a strong first impression. His lyrics are a little like a powerful handshake, a hypnotic stare, or a bold pair of cowboy boots that catch your attention. “It’s like the opening scene of a movie or the opening line of a book,” says Osborne on the subject of his carefully tailored opening lines. “There are different tactics that you use to kind of keep people inWWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
terested and to help people get into your story, Also it’s a statement. It’s you setting the tone of the song and letting people know right off the bat: ‘Okay, strap in.’” With lines that question the existence of heaven, and others that echo N.W.A. with regard to law enforcement, the lyrical intensity is a bit of a litmus test for listeners. Osborne says he wants to see if people are ready to go with him, to hear and discuss the meat of the songs. “I want to make sure that I can have a conversation,” he says. Osborne, 30, grew up in South Carolina and has been playing music in bands since he was 18. During a study-abroad stint in Cuba, Osborne found himself playing in a band in Havana. Part of the reason he was in college toward the end of his time as a student was to get subsidized loans so he could fund the recording of an album, says Osborne. It was a period of privation and uncertainty. “I was lost. I had kind of just ended this slow regression from Christianity. I was coming to terms with my own atheism,” says Osborne. “I was really broke, so I was doing cheap drugs with my friends.” You can hear it all in the songs -- the apostasy, the struggle, and the mind-altered searching. Some artists would more cautiously calibrate the amount of sharing, figuring that the confessional candor might spoil the mood for certain listeners. But Osborne and Susto let it loose. “Ultimately, being honest and being real trumps being protective of your audience,” says Osborne. !

Dodd went on to earn a golf scholarship to Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, but decided to focus on music and transferred to the University of Georgia. During his senior year, Dodd’s band opened for the Zac Brown Band at the legendary Georgia Theatre. Dodd moved to Nashville in 2014 and dedicated the last two years to writing. He performed at his first CMA Festival in 2015. When he went to record his new EP, FUN / FIRE /RAIN, he discovered he had more than 300 songs to choose from his catalogue. “This EP is reflective of everything I’ve been through, and is kind of my introduction to the world as an artist. I hope the lyrics, my story, will speak to a lot of people.”

About Muscadine Bloodline Unapologetically Alabama. There’s a new force making major waves in country music. Natives of Mobile, Alabama, Gary Stanton and Charlie Muncaster came together to form Muscadine Bloodline in early 2016. With three single releases under their belt and a schedule full of shows spanning from coast to coast, they’ve hit the ground running from day one. Nashville took notice the first time these two stepped on the stage and it is no surprise the rest of the music world is quickly catching on. Muncaster’s [contemporary] vocals complimented by Stanton’s harmonies and masterful guitar licks, Muscadine Bloodline is a powerfully refreshing mix of talent, passion and unfiltered authenticity. Infamously undaunted by the big stage, their sound intertwines the brash irreverence of early southern rockers with the seductive quality of 90s country love songs. Captivating hooks heard in songs like “Porch Swing Angel” and the aggressively anthemic “Shut Your Mouth” stand as a testament to Muscadine Bloodline’s wide ranging music-making capability. Every song and every show is a moving experience but at the same time, unmistakably Muscadine Bloodline. About Corey Smith The way Corey Smith sees it, he owes a debt to his fans. And it’s one he is determined to repay with his 10th album, While the Gettin’ Is Good. The project, released on Sugar Hill Records, marks the first time that the singer-songwriter, a wildly popular touring artist who has produced all of his past efforts, has turned over the reins to a bona fide country music producer in
www.YESwEEklY.cOMw
Keith Stegall. The result is Smith’s most ambitious record yet, as well as a return on the investment made by the fans who have supported him since his first album in 2003. A collection of 12 songs, While the Gettin’ Is Good was written entirely by Smith. As such, it’s a deeply personal album, one that explores themes of love, hometown pride and even personal discovery. A close relative inspired one of the record’s highlights, “Bend,” about learning how to adapt to what life throws at you. Now, however, Smith is focused squarely on the future. As the new album title suggests, he’s ready to make a determined grab at country’s brass ring while the gettin’ is good. And with Keith Stegall and Sugar Hill Records behind him, the gettin’ has never been better. As the perseverant Smith is fond of saying, “There is more than one way to skin a cat in country music.” About Collective Soul Born during the rise of grunge and alternative rock, Collective Soul broke into mainstream popularity when they rose to international fame in 1993 with the rock anthem Shine. The multi-platinum quintet has been making music for two decades since then and has a catalog of #1 hits under their belts. Collective Soul helped shape and define alternative rock with lots of guitars and attitude. Collective Soul was formed in the small town of Stockbridge, Georgia, in the early 1990s. The group consists of principal songwriter and frontman Ed Roland (lead vocals/keyboards/guitars), Dean Roland (rhythm guitarist), Will Turpin (bassist), Johnny Rabb (drummer) and Jesse Triplett (lead guitarist). The band’s debut album Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid was originally released in 1993 on Atlanta indie label Rising Storm. The album was a collection of Ed Roland’s demos that spread like fire through the college circuit and the popularity of the album locally spurred Atlantic to pick it up for a majorlabel release. Shine quickly became the rock anthem played across the country on radio and on MTV and set the band up for an arena tour with Aerosmith. Their selftitled second album was a triple platinum juggernaut and would define their sound with guitar driven songs and passionate vocals. The band went on to produce nine albums to date, all of which have included hit after hit. Collective Soul’s music has often been covered by well-known artists. In 2001, Dolly Parton won a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance with her cover version of “Shine.” In further recognition of their artistic achievement, WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
Collective Soul was inducted into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2009. Additionally, as the principal songwriter for the group, Roland was individually inducted as a songwriter in 2014. Collective Soul continues to rock quite simply for the love of music. The band that helped sonically define alternative rock is more focused and energized than ever. And as Ed Roland puts it, fans can continue to expect “lots of guitars and a fun attitude from the southern gentlemen of rock and roll.”

About Barenaked Ladies Barenaked Ladies is a Canadian rock band. The band is currently composed of Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson and Tyler Stewart. Barenaked Ladies formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario as a duo of Robertson and Steven Page. Jim Creeggan and his brother Andrew “Andy” Creeggan joined at the end of 1989, and Stewart was added in 1990 while Andy was on a brief hiatus from the group. Andy left the band after its second album in 1995 and was replaced by Hearn. Page left in 2009, leaving the group as a quartet. Upon forming, the band quickly developed a cult following in their native Canada culminating in their self-titled 1990 cassette becoming the first independent release ever to be certified gold in Canada. The band then received a major record deal with Reprise Records. Its label debut, Gordon, was released in 1992. The band’s style has evolved greatly throughout its career, and its music, which began as exclusively acoustic, quickly grew to encompass a mixture of a wide array of styles including pop, rock, hip hop, rap, etc. They are most commonly billed as an “alt rock” band. The band’s cult following translated into immediate success with Gordon in Canada with a number of popular singles including “If I Had $1000000” and “Brian Wilson,” but it was not until the band’s 1996 live album, Rock Spectacle with its singles, live versions of “The Old Apartment” and “Brian Wilson,” and its 1998 fourth studio album, Stunt, that the band finally found success in the United States. The lead single from Stunt, “One Week” remains the band’s most successful single. In 2007, Robertson wrote, and the band recorded, a theme song for the sitcom The Big Bang Theory for which the band has also become well-known. The band is also known for their lighthearted, comedic performance style and humorous banter between songs: improvised raps/songs are staples at most concerts. They have won multiple Juno Awards and have been nominated for Grammy Awards. The group has sold over 15 million records including albums and singles. !

STAGE IT!
The Stained Glass Playhouse announces its summer musical “Annie”
Leapin’ lizards! The popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals. Annie is a spunky Depression-era orphan who gets the chance to leave the New York City Orphanage, run by the cruel and embittered Miss Hannigan, and stay at the mansion of billionaire Oliver Warbucks for the holidays. When Annie wins the hearts of “Daddy” Warbucks and his staff, they set out on an epic mission to find Annie’s parents. Miss Hannigan, in partnership with her brother Rooster and his girlfriend Lily, attempts to profit from this unique situation. The stories become intertwined as the lovable Annie’s story hits the national spotlight. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations, befriends President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and finds a new family and home. Featuring such unforgettable songs as “It’s the Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow,” this family-friendly 1977 Tony Award winner for Best Musical is based on Harold Gray’s popular comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by permission of the Tribune Content Agency, LLC, and presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Auditions and performances will be held at Stained Glass Playhouse, located at 4401 Indiana Avenue in WinstonSalem, NC, in the former sanctuary of Marvin United Methodist Church. Alienation or exhilaration? BY MATT BRUNSON To say that Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel from 2012, divided audiences would be an understatement. Championed in some quarters for expanding the franchise’s mythology and lambasted in others for being too cerebral, the film was subjected to mixed word-of-mouth and saw its box office plummet after a strong opening weekend. That’s a shame, considering it was the first good movie in the series since James Cameron’s masterpiece Aliens opened in theaters back in 1986. Perhaps mindful of the criticism yet not completely willing to dumb down the franchise, Scott has returned with Alien: Covenant ( ), a movie that adds more action to the mix while also keeping the more philosophical points intact. Ironically, Scott will doubtless still get blasted by the naysayers, since fanboys are sure to gripe about the mixing and matching of styles. Yet more discerning viewers should find this a worthy experience, and if it recycles some beloved Alien/Aliens moments a bit too slavishly — well, so did Star Wars: The Force Awakens with the Lucas flicks, and that worked out nicely. Once again, the crew of a space vessel
— in this case, Covenant, a ship transporting two thousand sleeping inhabitants to a distant planet ripe for colonization — answers a mysterious call emanating from an unknown source. Seeking its origin, the crew members — among them the resilient Daniels (Katherine Waterston), timid leader Oram (Billy Crudup) and the android Walter (Michael Fassbender) — find themselves on a planet that seems perfectly suitable for the human race. And then they meet David (also Fassbender), the android from the mission detailed in Prometheus. No significant spoilers here, but let’s just say we find out what’s up with Prometheus lead character Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), what became of the Engineers, and how the alien monsters will again figure into the proceedings. Working in references to Milton, Michelangelo and Percy Shelley’s “Ozymandias” rather than to Marvel, mutants and Depp’s Jack Sparrow, it’s clear that Alien: Covenant isn’t a typical summer blockbuster (and one more reason why confused fanboys will run screaming into the night). For that, credit the new team of writers for building on the character brought to life by Fassbender in the previous film. David is one of the most complex and fascinating

characters in the entire Alien franchise, and most of the story’s existential angst, ironic developments, and role inversions all link back to him. Fassbender again excels in the part, and his double duty in also portraying Walter (a completely different style of replicant) is endlessly intriguing. Other cast members aren’t quite as compelling, although it should be noted that, against all expectations, Danny McBride portrays a character (Covenant pilot Tennessee) who we do not want to see immediately eviscerated by the aliens. When it comes to helming suspenseful set-pieces, Scott remains at the top of his game, with at least two tremendous sequences that are directed for maximum payoff. That’s not to say there aren’t some missteps along the way. The climactic skirmish on top of a moving vessel comes off as overkill, and there’s a plot twist so obvious that even someone with the I.Q. of a slug (or a Trump supporter; take your pick) should be able to figure it out. Yet even the occasional flaw can’t prevent Alien: Covenant from fulfilling its obligation as sound summertime entertainment. A YA adaptation brandishing a WTF plot twist, Everything, Everything ( ) arrives in theaters as a seasonal antidote to all the superhero and sci-fi sagas clamoring for attention. Of course, counterprogramming is nothing new, and it worked like gangbusters three summers ago with the lovely box office hit The Fault In Our Stars. This new picture, based on Nicola Yoon’s novel, isn’t nearly as successful in its construction of the central characters or its handing of the dilemmas they face, but it’s an agreeable movie with a startling final act that might catch young audiences off-guard as forcefully as, say, The Usual Suspects or The Sixth Sense walloped older audiences with their left-field reveals. Amandla Stenberg, The Hunger Games’ little Rue all grown up, essays the lead role in what’s initially a modern-day variation on the 1976 John Travolta TV-movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. She plays Maddy Whittier, an 18-year-old who has spent practically her entire life never venturing outside her Los Angeles home. That’s because she has severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), which basically prevents her body from fighting any and all infections. Since even stepping outside might prove to be fatal, she can’t ever leave the premises, with her physician mom (Anika Noni Rose) and a sympathetic nurse (Ana de la Reguera) keeping a watchful eye on her. It isn’t until a cute boy named Olly Bright (Nick Robinson) moves into the house next door and befriends her via text-messaging that Maddy finds herself willing to put her life at risk. Even within the confines of the narrative, the behavior of certain characters doesn’t always make sense, but there’s nothing
forced about the burgeoning relationship between Maddy and Olly. Theirs is a sweet romance, and it’s a shame the filmmakers don’t trust it to stand on its own — instead, the picture is weakened by strains of whimsical fancy (many involving an astronaut) that probably worked better on paper than in practice. As for the third-act revelation, it provides some oomph to a storyline that had started getting fragmented by this point. It spins the tale in a new direction, and while some viewers might resent the darker implications it brings to the table, it certainly guarantees that the movie won’t be dismissed as merely another standard teen sudser. Subtitled The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer, Norman ( ) finds Richard Gere delivering one of the finest performances of his lengthy career. He stars as Norman Oppenheimer, a self-professed businessman. And if you’re wondering what “businessman” exactly entails in his case, you’re not alone — another character asks that same question, hoping for clarity. Norman is a wheeler-dealer, a con man, an opportunist, a strategist, an advisor — take your pick. He’s a small fish in a big pond, always trying to score important connections with politicos, financiers and other influential people. He finally strikes gold when he does a favor for rising Jewish politician Micha Eschel (Lior Ashkenazi), who three years later becomes the Israeli Prime Minister and doesn’t forget his friend Norman. Written and directed by Joseph Cedar, Norman centers on a man who, by all logic, should be too insufferable and impossible to follow. Yet thanks to Cedar’s writing and Gere’s emoting, Norman Oppenheimer is instead a figure worthy of attention and sympathy. True, he makes his own bed and then has to sleep in the soiled sheets — after all, it’s his insistence on exaggerating his power and his relationships that lead to (as the subtitle notes) his downfall. But who doesn’t want to feel important, or feel as if they’ve made some positive contribution to society? One of Norman’s problems is that he cares too much, and it’s difficult to dislike and dismiss someone like that. Gere nails his character’s braggadocio but also his insecurities, and he’s backed by a terrific supporting roster that includes Michael Sheen as his concerned nephew and Steve Buscemi as a rabbi who’s not above letting loose with the occasional string of profanities. If only the final act were as strong as the rest of this unique picture. Instead, in an illadvised effort to not only neatly tie together all the plot threads but also lend the piece an air of (there’s that subtitle again) tragic destiny, Norman abandons credibility for convenience. It’s an unfortunate denouement, though it’s hardly a debilitating one. !

College Hill Sundries
R
ight in the heart of Greensboro lies College Hill Sundries, recipient of the 2017 YES! Weekly Best Late Night Bar in the Triad and Best College Bar in the Triad. A runner up for Best Neighborhood Bar and Best Karaoke Nights as well, the local favorite is also home to bartenders Pam Cooper and Josh Crocker, who were runners up in the best female and male (respectively) bartenders in the entire Triad. Founded in 1982, the bar was purchased in 2005 by Jason Paul who brought in liquor sales and turned it into a private club. Since then it has become a popular destination for folks in the ever-classic neighborhood near UNCG. “Honestly, I have to give the credit for our success to our staff and that we’ve been lucky to have some really great regulars,” Paul said “We have a really good approach here – we ask that people here have to be respectful of everyone else. We want to be the place where a woman can come in and enjoy a drink and not be bothered. We want it to be a comfortable place for lots and lots of people.” “It gets rowdy at time, it does,” he continued, “but you don’t have to worry about things. That environment is at the top of why we are successful.” College Hill Sundries also offers some of the best cocktails around and prides themselves on a good beer program. It opens at 3 pm daily and is a private club for those 21 and up. Dues are a yearly membership and run $1.

However, that doesn’t seem to worry Myers. “They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I guess they’re right,” said Myers. “Other dealers see our goofy TV ads, they’ve seen our Emmy-nominated documentary Car Men and they know how successful we are so they decide they’re going to be like us. And yes, they can copy what we do. The programs, the energy in the showroom, the video games. All of it. However, what they can never copy is our heart, our passion and our culture. The Porch Kitchen and Cantina
“
Being from Texas, I wanted to do a menu that featured what I grew up with, you know, with some really great tacos and really great margaritas,” The Porch Kitchen and Cantina owner Claire Calvin said. And she did just that, in a very big way. How big? Well, the restaurant has just won these awards in the annual YES! Weekly Best ofs: Best Tacos in Forsyth County, Best Mexican Restaurant in Forsyth County, Best Margarita in Forsyth County and Best Margarita in the Triad. The restaurant was also runner up in: Best Taco in Triad, Best Mexican Restaurant in the Triad, Best Bloody Mary in Forsyth, Best Restaurant in Forsyth and Best Patio in Forsyth. And they’ve only been open for three and a half years! Calvin said that she had originally opened this as an outgrowth from a catering and dinner delivery business she was running, but the restaurant literally took off overnight. “The restaurant side of it was instantly a million times busier than we had expected,” she said. “It was crazy busy that first week, then the first month, then the first year! We really do care a lot about our margaritas and our tacos and the meats we prepare and we think it has just really paid off.” Located at 840 Mill Works Street in Winston-Salem, The Porch is open Tuesday—Thursday 10 am to 9 pm, Friday – Saturday 10 am to 10 pm and on Sunday 10 am to 9 pm. They do offer fun event catering as well as pre-packaged fresh and frozen meals to enjoy at home.

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson
S
mokin’ Harley-Davidson has racked up another win with this year’s YES! Weekly Best Motorcycle Dealership in the Triad. In just eight years of business it has become not just a local favorite but one that attracts bikers throughout the region. Owned by Ray Perry, Smokin’ Harley Davidson has grown to have the largest selection of new and pre-owned Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the Carolinas. At any given time, there are generally between 100 and 150 pre-owned motorcycles on hand, ranging from recent favorites to some of the all-time classics. Occasionally they’ll even have a vintage HarleyDavidson on hand that has come in through a trade, if you’re looking to grab a piece of history. And there’s almost always over a hundred new Harley-Davidsons available for sale at any time, as well. Whether you are looking for a Softail, a Sportster, a Street or a Touring model, they’ve got you covered. They even have trikes if you’re in the market. They also offer an onsite full service department and have the best selection of accessories and Motorclothes you’ll find anywhere. Combine that with great customer service from experienced bikers and you’ll quickly see why Smokin’ Harley-Davidson is an award winner. Located at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem, the location also offers a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy for new motorcycle enthusiasts. They are open Monday – Saturday 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. For more information call 336-790-6094 or see their website at: www.smokinharley.com.

hen tragedy befalls you, you need a fellow like James Roane in your corner. Voted this year’s Best Lawyer in Guilford County, Attorney James Roane is a personal injury specialist who fights for the rights and restitution of his clients. “After I graduated from UNC-G here I was operating a cleaning business for hotels and restaurants in the area, but I got into a bad car wreck with a drunk driver and broke my back in 1995. The insurance company treated me badly and I decided not to take it. I drafted my own lawsuit, went after them and they paid. The next year, I went to Wake Forest University’s law school and became a lawyer.” Understanding that insurance companies often block, impede and attempt to intimidate the victims, Roane goes after the insurers aggressively, pushing back against them and taking them to court where they must face both the law and the victims. “I believe things happen for a reason and I knew I had to help people out after my own experiences,” he said. Since opening his practice, Roane has won more personal injury cases than anyone else in the area and in 2007 he was voted the top North Carolina lawyer under the age of 40 in a survey voted on by 17,000 attorneys for Business NC. If you’re in need of assistance, please contact Roane Law at 336790-5194 or stop by the office at 107 Lindley Road, Greensboro, NC.

Local Honey
reensboro’s Local Honey is the recipient of the 2017 YES! Weekly awards for both Best Hair Salon in Guilford County and Best Hair Salon in the Triad. In the four years since it first opened, it has become one of the most dynamic and talked about salons in the region – featuring a host of talented stylists and quite a few innovative products. They’ve even been recognized nationally as one of Salon Magazine’s Top 200 salons in the United States. Proudly proclaiming they handle everything from beehives to buzz cuts, Local Honey is an artisanal salon for both men and women where clients can enjoy a relaxing, high-end salon experience. Cuts, styling, coloring and a variety of other services are offered along with an apothecary bar of haircare and beauty products. And, in a tip of the hat to the name, the salon also sells a wide range of North Carolina honey varieties for those with a sweet tooth for one of nature’s greatest products. “The honey is a metaphor for how we work,” owner and founder Jay Bulluck said. “We’re a sweet, Southern product that is a natural fix for what is going on in your environment.” Local Honey is located at 233 Commerce Place in Greensboro and you can call them at (336) 355-9377. They are open Monday 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesday to Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 9 am to 7 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. To learn more, see their website at www. localhoneysalon.com.

Cellular Sales/Verizon R
eliable service and quality products are the hallmarks of a good business, but stellar customer service is how you shine in any crowded field. Locally, Verizon and Cellular Sales have been voted as the Best Wireless Carrier in the Triad for 2017 in great part because of that level of customer service offered at each of their locations in the area. Cellular Sales Founder Don White explained that he and his business partner Scott Love operate 45 of the state’s Cellular Sales stores and have been in the business for 23 years. “At Cellular Sales, our biggest thing has been about having that one point of contact for our customers. Our hope has always been that when a person comes into our stores they can leave with a really good experience and that they know they’ve always got someone there if they have any questions or needs.” “It’s been great to be able to take the capabilities and quality of Verizon’s wireless network and combine it with our personal service at Cellular Sales,” he continued. Cellular Sales started out in Greensboro in 1997, in the days when bag phones were still the norm and White, a long-time cellular enthusiast, was an early owner of a mobile telephone even a decade before. They’ve come a long way since, with locations throughout Greensboro, High Point and the surrounding area. Stop by any one and check out the latest technology and classic customer care.

Cycles de Oro
ou can’t stay in business for 42 years without making some friends, and in the case of the 2017 winner of the YES! Weekly Best Bicycle Store in the Triad, Cycles de Oro, it means you’ve made tons of friends. The Cycles de Oro Bicycle Emporium has been a Greensboro landmark for a couple of generations now and countless bicycle enthusiasts have crossed the store’s threshold over the years. “I truly believe it is our affection for cycling and our involvement with the community that has kept us going over the years,” owner Dale Brown, one of the original founders, said. “And we love our customers. We’ve been proud to provide people with something that just makes them happy.” They also pride themselves on offering bicycles for every kind of rider, from the beginner to the competitive enthusiast and all the steps in between. “We love the range we offer and we love to serve all of the levels of the community,” Brown continued. “A person can find that $100 bicycle to start off with, or one for their kid, but they can also find those rare, top competitor bicycles that run $10,000.” Over the years, Cycles de Oro has also been a big supporter of building a bicyclist community in the area, helping to found the Greensboro Velo Club about 20 years ago. In addition, they help sponsor several cycling events in the area and are one of the founding organizers of the annual Tour de Tanglewood event. Cycles de Oro is located at 701 Hill Street in Greensboro. You can reach them at 336-274-5959 or stop by their website at: www.cyclesdeoro.com. A full-service bicycle repair shop is available on premises.

Clay Howard
he reason they call it classic rock is because it never goes out of style, and this year’s 2017 YES! Weekly Best Vocalist in the Triad award goes out to classic rocker Clay Howard. A staple of the local live music scene for years, Howard is a favorite whether he’s performing solo as an acoustic musician or rocking covers and originals with his bands. “I’ve been playing forever it seems,” Howard said. “I’ve been the old guy in the local scene for a while now, it’s been about 30 years of performing.” Right now, he juggles performances between solo work, the Threadbare Trio (acoustic originals and covers) and Clay Howard and the Silver Alerts, a classic rock band that will be performing at this weekend’s Gears and Guitars Festival at Bailey Park in Winston-Salem. (Showtime will be Monday, May 29 at 1 pm). On top of that, he also leads the music for his church’s contemporary service. In the past, Howard’s bands have included groups such as Society’s Child, Bonehead, regional success Diggin’ Taters, Christian band THEmessage and Barely White. He also received national airplay for his 2004 holiday song, “No Snow at Christmas”. Howard also has a new EP, Don’t Make Me Tell You Again, coming out on Friday, May 26. Check out his website at www.clayhoward.com to give a listen to new works and purchase the new EP. You can also look for future performance schedules and check out some of his other recorded works.

H
igh Point’s Liberty Brewery and Grill has taken the award for 2017 YES! Weekly’s Best Restaurant Bar. Blending great brews, fantastic foods and a hopping atmosphere, the first home for craft brewing in the Triad has been a favorite of the area for some time now and the party seems to just keep going on. “We just have a lot of locals and a lot of buzz,” Liberty Brewery & Grill Manager Russ Hildebrand said. “Great food is probably one of the keys and we just started a brand-new menu here and we’re excited about that.” “And of course, we always have a minimum of eight craft beers on tap that were brewed right here on the premises,” Hildebrand continued. They also offer a full bar for mixed drinks and other libations, including a limited selection of domestic beers (really, the on-site craft brewery produces some of the best beers to be found anywhere, so make sure to give them a try). In their 17 years of business, Liberty Brewery & Grill has become a staple for the local college and community crowd. There’s regularly live music on Thursday evenings and sometimes on Friday nights as well. In addition, there’s trivia on Wednesdays and $3 pint nights are done a couple of times each week. Liberty Brewery & Grill is located at 914 Mall Loop Road in High Point. They are open Sunday – Thursday 11 am to 11 pm, and Friday – Saturday 11 am to midnight. For more information see www.libertybreweryandgrill.com.

Tessa’s Farm to Fork
T
here’s a new player in the Farm to Table restaurant game in the Triad and they’ve really begun to catch the eye of the public. Under the guidance of chef Caleb Smallwood, Tessa’s Farm to Fork restaurant in Greensboro has won Best New Restaurant in Guilford County and Best New Restaurant in the Triad. In addition, Smallwood was honored as the runner up in Best Chef in Guilford County. Located in a converted diner at 3929 Battleground Avenue, Tessa’s serves food sourced locally through a number of local farms, artisans and purveyors. “There’s nothing cutting edge about our food, it’s not molecular gastronomy, but our menu changes a lot and is super adaptive to the local product. Sometimes we have to change weekly, sometimes daily, but it is all about staying true to our mission.” “We try to offer good, high quality food in good portion sizes while getting people full and showing them you can use local produce and products without having to import so much food in,” he continued. “And we’ve met the most passionate and skilled people who are supplying us with our materials.” Tessa’s Farm to Fork is open for lunch Tuesday – Thursday from 11 am to 2 pm, dinners Tuesday – Saturday from 5 pm go 9 pm and they offer brunch Friday – Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm. For more info, stop by their website at www.tessagreensboro.com or call 336-763-1256.

last call [LEO (July 23 to August 22) You may feel pressured by circumstances to take control of a situation. Perhaps that is so. Or perhaps you merely fear that others will not handle the situation as well as you can. You are dangerously close to letting your ego run the game. Please spend some time in contemplation of what is the “right” thing to do for the Greater Good before you act. [VIRGO (August 23 to September 22)
You are prone to worry about outcomes that may never happen. Think carefully. Will worrying make the situation any better in the long run? Your ego is most likely the culprit. It wants the shallow satisfaction of knowing you were right in worrying. Consider how pointless that is and let go of the worry. Relax.
[LIBRA (September 23 to October 22)
You are harboring a secret attitude about a loved one. You may think it is not visible, but it erodes the core of the relationship. The probability is high that it is critical of yourself or the Other. Maybe a change does need to happen, but it is not useful to pressure its creation with blame.
[HOROSCOPES] [SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Make no impulsive moves this week and keep a sharp curb on your tongue. There may be a minor skirmish with a partner or roommate over the sharing of resources. This is not the ultimate deal breaker and the moments of discomfort pass quickly if your relationship is basically sound. Don’t turn the issue into a disaster.
[AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You accomplished a major task in the last couple of weeks. You were in the right place with the right skills to see it through. Don’t bother with re-thinking what you “could-a, would-a, should” have done. You did your part in the best way you could. Let yourself have the privilege of recognizing that and be done with it.
[TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Changes may be occurring in your primary relationship. One or the other of you is probably trying to hang onto what is familiar. Changes and growth must be allowed to happen or the relationship will become stale. Let things flow naturally. Don’t jump to conclusions or make problems bigger than they are.
[SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Jupiter, your ruling planet is in a truly challenging place. You may feel mistreated by someone, even attacked. But you know intuitively that if you fight it, things will go against you. It is hard for you to back off from a fight, but you must do so now. Wait until well beyond the end of this month to revisit the situation.
[PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your imagination and storytelling ability is at a high point. Tell or write beautiful prose from scratch. Don’t try to correct it as you go. There will be time for editing later. Your dreams are meaningful and your intuition strong.
[GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You are disturbed by a situation that you would rather not broadcast at this time. Don’t lash out at people. It will not serve you well later. If you must speak, tone down your anger a notch or two and say your piece. Then let it go.
[ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The pressure of pending change is making itself known in your work arena. A situation that may no longer be tolerable for you personally is the fulcrum. Perhaps this is an issue in which you cannot find any method to create peace enough for efficient operation. Speak up, but not in public, lest you regret it. Drive and handle tools very carefully.
[CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You are in a reasonably good place with yourself now. Your heart and mind are flowing together. You have no conflict between your feelings and your thoughts about those feelings. This is a time for reflection on important subjects. You can make good decisions now, especially those that are financial.
[CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You have a desire to make changes to home and/or other property, but you hit a brick wall that tells you “no.” Maybe this is a person who disagrees or possibly it is some type of inalterable rule. Step back two paces and allow your mind to open a crack to a fresh and do-able idea.

I’m a 40-year-old man who can’t seem to keep a relationship going for more than a year. There’s never bitter fighting or betrayal. I just gradually lose interest. I can’t blame my girlfriends — most of whom are pretty exciting people. I’m the problem, but why? And can I change? — Frustrated
Ever gotten new carpeting? The first month, it’s “No shoes and no drinks whatsoever in the living room!” A few months after that: “Oh, we don’t use glasses anymore. Just splash red wine around and drink right off the rug.” In the happiness research world, the psychological shift behind this is called “hedonic adaptation” — “hedonic” from the Greek word for pleasure and “adaptation” to describe how we acclimate to new stuff or situations in our lives. They rather quickly stop giving us the buzz (or bite) they did at first, and we get pitched right back to our baseline feeling of well-being (Yeahwhatevsville). Bummer, huh? But there’s an upside. Psychologists Timothy Wilson and Dan Gilbert explain that hedonic adaptation is part of our “psychological immune system,” helping us recover from all the kicks in the teeth and boys’ bathroom swirlies of life. There’s another possible bummer at work here, per your longing for less wilty love. You may be more “sensationseeking” than most people. Research by psychologist Marvin Zuckerman, who coined the term, finds that this is a personality trait with origins in genes, as well as experience, reflected in strong cravings for novel, varied, and intense sensations and experiences. If this is driving you, basically, you want it new, you want it now, and all the better if it’s a little life-threatening. In other words, some benefits of a committed relationship, like deeply knowing another person, may end up being deeply boring to you. Still, part of your problem may be a hopeful approach — simply hoping your relationships don’t die instead of taking steps to prevent that. Research by psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky finds that three “intentional activities” help keep hedonic adaptation from overtaking a relationship — appre-
ciating, injecting variety, and incorporating surprise. Appreciating simply means regularly reviewing and “savoring” what’s great about your partner and what you have together. (Even better if you also express it to them). Bringing in variety and surprise means filling the relationship with “unexpected moments” and “unpredictable pleasures,” big and small. Be honest with women about your befizzlement problem. When you find one who’s up for the challenge, get cracking with her on keeping the excitement alive. Be sure to do this both in romantic dayto-day ways and, say, with the perfect romantic weekend for a guy like you — one that starts with the valet at the spa opening the trunk, removing the hood over your head, and cutting the zip ties so you can go take a sauna.
caves and lean-tos instead of condos and McMansions. For example, in research on opposite-sex friendships, “women, but not men, prioritize economic resources and physical prowess in their opposite-sex friends, a discrepancy that mirrors sexdifferences in mate preferences.” Getting back to this woman who texted you, she probably saw something in you from the start but was otherwise encumbered. So, yes, she’s likely been carrying a torch for you, but for two years, it’s been in airplane mode. Got a problem? Backup To The FuTure
Two years ago, I met this beautiful, intriguing girl. I gave her my number, but she never called. Last week, she texted out of the blue. Weird! My friend said she probably had a boyfriend until now. Do women really hoard men’s info in case their relationship tanks? — Wondering Consider the male BFF. A woman may not consciously think of hers as her backup man. But should her relationship go kaput, there he is — perfectly situated to dry her tears. Um, with his lap. There seems to be an evolutionary adaptation for people in relationships — especially women — to line up backup mates. It’s basically a form of doomsday prepping — except instead of a bunker with 700 cans of beans and three slightly dented Hellfire missiles, there are two eligible men on the shelves of a woman’s mind and the phone number of another on a crumpled ATM receipt in the back of her wallet. Evolutionary psychologists Joshua Duntley and David Buss explain that in ancestral times, even people “experiencing high relationship satisfaction would have benefited from cultivating potential replacement mates” in case their partner cheated, ditched them, died, or dropped a few rungs in mate value. A woman whose partner left or died “would have suffered a lapse in protection, mate investment, and resources for her children, much like people who transition between jobs in the modern environment sometimes suffer a lapse in insurance coverage.” Duntley and Buss note that female psychology today still has women prepping for romantic disaster like they’re living in
