speaking about abolishing prisons at the DNC with the hashtag #LawlessLiberals. Pittenger said that TAP would also continue to get people involved and keep them involved by “giving the community access to direct actions from a variety of spaces.” Pittenger said the occupation could not have continued for almost 50 days if not for the community’s participation and the “stamina and courage of the occupiers.” “What a difference it makes to have a community involved in this kind of support,” she said. “Being interested in public comment periods to the point of

Weekly asked Howell in a followup email if the sheriff could confirm what TAP alleged was true, and if so, when those policy changes would be in writing but received no response. On Aug. 31, Battle and Pittenger confirmed that the FCSO had emailed them the updated policy changes that reflected the two most important demands of TAP. The other two demands, Pittenger said, were dropped because their questions were answered from other sources, and they are confident that their legal team can get their charges of “impeding traffic” dropped. Even though their demands relating to policy changes were met, Pittenger said this is just the beginning of Triad Abolition Project’s work in the Winston-Salem community. “It means more civic engagement, monitoring the SBI investigations in Forsyth County to make sure not an another John Neville case happens,” she said. “We are definitely going to do more direct action with education—sit-ins, teach-ins, that kind of thing—especially on abolition.” According to a press conference held by TAP on Sept. 1, Battle told the press that the TAP would be redirecting its attention on District Attorney Jim O’Neill, who, as Battle said, “appears hellbent on prosecuting peaceful protesters, despite having tweeted just days ago, ‘Looking forward to serving alongside Kentucky AG @DanielCameronAG who understands we can stand with law enforcement & maintain law order while working with & alongside activists who are committed to stamping out inequality and racial injustice.’ It is unnerving that DA O’Neill seems at best oblivious, if not, in direct opposition to the efforts of activists here in Forsyth County working for justice for Mr. Neville. Activists working to stomp out inequality that his office is currently prosecuting. Activists who are simply exercising our right to protest and make our community safer for us all. Efforts which have been proven successful in getting a dangerous law enforcement restraint banned by the Forsyth County Sheriff ’s Office. DA O’Neill has notoriously supported some of the worst elements of U.S. society, including violent, right-wing fanatics.” Battle specifically addressed a retweet by O’Neill on Aug. 18 of a video from the account @RepublicanAGs depicting a local Black, trans activist

On the 48th night of #OccupyWSNC, the Triad Abolition Project announced that their demands had been met by the Forsyth County Sheriff ’s Office and that the almost two-month occupation of Bailey Park would end on Sept. 1. The #OccupyWSNC movement began on July 15, and at the helm of the movement was the Triad Abolition Project— fronted by Dr. Brittany Battle, Bailey Pittenger, and Hannah Campbell— and consisted of over a dozen frequent occupiers showing up every day in the blistering heat and flooding rain to march and push for their demands to be met. Over the course of the 49 days, 55 arrests on charges of “impeding traffic” occurred through acts of civil disobedience, where protesters intentionally stood in the streets of downtown to peacefully demonstrate. On Aug. 27, the Triad Abolition Project sent out a statement regarding a meeting that occurred on Aug. 26, where TAP turned in the collaborative petition with the ACLU of N.C. that acquired over 1,000 signatures. According to the statement, the meeting between organizers and FCSO personnel indicated that the organization’s demands were going to be met. YES! Weekly reached out to the FCSO to confirm this statement on Aug. 27. According to FCSO Public Affairs Officer Christina Howell, Sheriff Kimbrough made the following statement: “We do not – and have not, in my time or under the previous administration – ‘hog-tied’ or used the Ripp-Hobble restraint in any capacity. There is a marked difference between a bent-leg prone restraint and ‘hog-tying’ an individual. Again – we have not endorsed or participated in the practice of ‘hog-tying’ an individual and any claim otherwise is not only inaccurate but inflammatory. SHARE Cooperative inches closer to opening a grocery store in a Winston-Salem food desert

ev. Willard Bass and Rev. Gary Williams are co-directors/founders of the SHARE Cooperative, and its motto is “Supplying Honest And Respectful EngageKatie Murawski ment.” For the past four years, they have Editor been trying to practice what they preach and feed the hungry by opening a grocery store in one of Winston-Salem’s many food deserts. Doing this would provide access to healthy food. The project is closer than ever before, but they still need about $300,000 from the City of Winston-Salem to make it a reality. The SHARE Cooperative’s plan is to open a full-service grocery store called the Harvest Market and use its profits to help feed those who are living in poverty— all while engaging the community in activism and advocacy with monthly workshops and classes. “We see [the co-op] as an opportunity to bring diverse folks together,” Williams said. “There are food-insecure folks, and there is no reason for that to be, especially in Winston-Salem, where we have an abundance of assets.” “What we want to do is provide access,” Williams added. “There are parts of our community that simply just don’t have access, and it’s no fault of theirs. It’s just that large food distributors have decided that area is not profitable enough to actually open a store over there. Their business is to make profits. Counter to that, we realize there is a problem, so as a community, we are bringing our assets together to eliminate that issue.” “[Food insecurity] spirals into other issues,” Bass said. “Like if you are a hungry kid, you can’t focus in school—25% of our kids in Forsyth County are food insecure. All of these issues compound on each other and make it so that we need more healthy food in a place like where we are setting up our cooperative.” Bass and Williams said that the first Harvest Market would be located in an 8,700 square-foot site within the West Salem Shopping Center, off Peters Creek YES! An artist rendering of the Harvest Market storefront (This was painted before the “Harvest Market” name was chosen) Parkway and Academy Street, and it would be a model to prove that their co-op model would work. Peter Schlachte, a Wake Forest graduate and an AmeriCorp Vista with the SHARE Cooperative, said the co-op model is community-centered and would provide the member-owners with a voice in decisions at the co-op. “Everyone is on an equal playing field because [member-owners] get a single vote in cooperative matters regardless of how much money they have,” Schlachte said. “It gives a lot of voice to local community members, but it also ensures everyone has an equal say for that voice.” Bass explained that the SHARE Cooperative is a nonprofit, and through the co-op model, the profits, or overages, would be reinvested in the community and go toward subsidizing people who can’t afford groceries. “Now, that is different from a Food Lion or Aldi,” Williams said. “They make a profit, and then they take that money out of our community and back to their own headquarters.” Bass and Williams said that they were both called on by God to pursue this endeavor. “I’ve really had it in my heart the question of ‘how to be an authentic community?’— I’ve always been wrestling with that,” Bass said. “It’s even stronger now because where we are in our nation and communities. We need to have this place where we can begin to be an authentic community. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about ‘the Beloved Community,’ and we have been hard-fast to have a place like that. My commitment is to pursue that. God has called me, and this team around us. I’ve been called to do it, and I gotta do it.”
“I came to this area approximately five years ago to retire, to do nothing—I bought a rocking chair and started rocking,” Williams said. “But then, I heard and discovered the needs. I have been blessed, so I couldn’t just sit and do nothing. ‘To whom much is given, much will be required.’ God had a calling on my life, and God has said to me, ‘often you need to do a little bit more.’ The reason that appeals to me is because God has abundantly blessed me, and he continues to bless. And I try to witness this to the folk that is there; we have been stuck a few times, but then God has shown favor and sent grace to overcome those things. So, how could I just sit in a rocking chair and do nothing?” Even though Bass and Williams said they were called on by the Divine to bring The Harvest Market to fruition, it doesn’t mean this process has been easy— enter the COVID-19 pandemic. “To me, it was a blessing and a curse,” Bass said of COVID-19. “We had a schedule that we were on, and then when COVID hit, it put all that on hold.” “We pivoted and regrouped,” Williams added. “There were certain benefits from that as well—the benefit that we got was to continue to [improve] the infrastructure of the building.” “The other side of that, with COVID hitting, it made people become aware of the disparities that have existed, not only in our nation but locally,” Bass added. “More people have been coming forward, offering to help and get involved.” Williams said the pandemic also benefited SHARE because social distancing created a need that The Harvest Market could to fill. Thus, the implementation of the Harvest Market’s WebCart, an ecommerce site to order groceries online for
curbside pick up at 663 Peters Creek Pkwy., which Bass said would go live on Sept. 21. According to the website, the brick-andmortar would open in December 2020. Looking to the future, Bass and Williams said after the first location of The Harvest Market is up and running, they would be planning for the second location—and they have their eyes set on the area with the most food deserts in the city, East Winston. Williams said that they are looking at buying 38 acres of property to redevelop, the benefits of which would be economic development. Williams noted that the flagship Harvest Market would create 34 jobs, and he anticipates that those job opportunities would triple at the East Winston location. Member-owners pay an initial $100 membership fee, and there is a corporate membership option, which is $250. Senior citizens, students and those on government assistance can also become member-owners as well, but at a discounted rate of $75. Bass and Williams explained that member-owners would have access to exclusive discounts, training/classes and would be able to vote on future decisions of the co-op. Bass said there are already over 400 member-owners signed up with the SHARE Cooperative. Bass and Williams said their goal is $2.3 million to open the store, and they are very close, but still need about $300,000 to reach that goal—which will depend on the Winston-Salem City Council voting in favor of supporting this endeavor. Bass and Williams expect the council to vote on whether they will approve the funds they need to open the first Harvest Market during the next council meeting on Monday, Sept. 21. RiverRun brings laughs and love to Marketplace Drive-In
aving enjoyed tremendous success this summer, the collaboration between the RiverRun International Film Festival and Marketplace Cinemas Drive-In screenings continues this month with a pair of popular screen favorites on tap, both of which have direct ties to the festival. Mark Burger Friday, “RiverRun at Marketplace” presents the 1987 Mel Brooks sci-fi spoof Spaceballs on Marketplace’s Contributor drive-in screen, followed by the award-winning 2005 comedy/ drama Junebug on Thursday, Sept. 10. Marketplace Cinemas is located at 2095 Peters Creek Pkwy. in Winston-Salem. Gates will open 7:30 p.m. both nights, with each screening beginning around 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per car, $30 per car for VIP parking, and concessions will also be available for purchase. Tickets are available for purchase at www.mpcwsdrivein.simpletix.com. Originally released in the summer of 1987, Spaceballs (rated PG) is Mel Brooks’s send-up of the Star Wars universe, boasting a star-studded cast including Brooks himself (in dual roles), John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, and Bill Pullman as the cocky, swaggering space pilot, Lone Starr. Pullman is a member of RiverRun’s advisory board and was the 2008 recipient of the Master of Cinema award. Although it was only a moderate box-office success, Spaceballs was a smash on home-video and cable television. “Over the years, the film has come to be regarded as something of a cult classic, and perhaps the most popular of Brooks’s parodies of film genres such as Blazing Saddles and High Anxiety,” said Rob Davis, RiverRun executive director. The award-winning comedy/drama Junebug (rated R), which marks its 15th anniversary this year, is undoubtedly more familiar to local audiences, having been filmed throughout the Piedmont Triad. It marked the feature debut of director Phil Morrison, who grew up in WinstonSalem, and the feature debut for screenwriter Angus MacLachlan, the acclaimed playwright who is also a Winston-Salem native. The cast includes Scott Wilson, Embeth Davidtz, Alessandro Nivola, Ben McKenzie, Celia Weston, R. Keith Harris, and Amy Adams, who earned the first of her six Academy Award nominations – this one for Best Supporting Actress. The film offers a gentle but perceptive look at cultural differences; one recently noted in a Washington Post column penned by Billy McEntee, who wrote: “The film asks me to hold and protect an unconditional love for those, I would not have encountered in real life, and for those I never will.” Both MacLachlan and Weston (recipient of RiverRun’s 2017 Master of Cinema award) are members of the festival’s advisory board. “We are thrilled to present these films that have not YES! one, not two, but three connections to our wonderful RiverRun advisory board,” Davis said. “All three of these folks – Angus, Celia, and Bill – have made incredible contributions to film, and we are humbled to have all of them as part of the RiverRun family. We cannot wait to show both of these incredible films at Marketplace.” For the Junebug screening, MacLachlan, Morrison, and Weston have all provided video introductions in which they share their memories about the production and the lasting impact Junebug has had, both for them and for audiences. “I am very proud of the film, and I actually haven’t seen it in a while,” said MacLachlan, who has since written and directed Goodbye to All That (2014) and Abundant Acreage Available (2017), both filmed in North Carolina. “I would hope that it holds up and still has meaning for people.” “I remember when I saw the first rough cut in one of the producer’s basement,” he added. “Although it wasn’t finished and it needed work. I felt so strongly that, fundamentally, Phil Morrison had not only gotten what my intention was but actually made it better.” “Working with RiverRun has been terrific,” said Zack Fox, manager and projectionist at Marketplace Cinemas. “Who would ever imagine that our first year working working ‘inside’ with RiverRun would have turned into a series of outside drive-in movies? Not me. But the turnouts have been excellent. Each event tops the last.” The August screenings of before/during/after and the
documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble were the most successful yet, with Davis noting that the latter film set a new drive-in attendance record. “We continue to be pleased with the turnout and support for RiverRun at Marketplace Drive-In.” “We were very honored that Finnerty Steeves (writer/ producer/star of before/during/after) made the trip from New York to present her movie in person,” Fox said, “and we’re very excited that the talent behind Junebug will present us with some video introductions for the film – made exclusively just for RiverRun and our Marketplace Drive-In. Some of Hollywood’s best helping out our independent cinema and independent festivals is very exciting to us. We’re quite grateful.” What’s more, the turnout for the OUT at the Movies drive-in screening of The Birdcage (1996) “was incredible,” Fox said. “If we didn’t have a storm blow through 30 minutes before the showing, there was a solid chance for a last-minute midnight screening added for overflow. Truly a tremendous turnout. We loved working with Rex Welton and the ‘OUT’ team, and look forward to being a part of future ‘OUT’ events both at our drive-in and indoors.” The official Marketplace Cinemas website is www. mpcws.com/, and the official RiverRun website is www. riverrunfilm.com/. ! Trump and the dreaded ‘S’ word During the opening night of the Republican National Convention, former United Nations Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley warned that America would turn socialist under Jim Longworth a Biden/Harris administration. Haley and a host Longworth of other speakers at Large took their lead from Donald Trump, who has been using the dreaded “S” word to stoke fear among voters for the past four years. The problem is that we all embrace and rely on some form of socialism every day of our lives, but Trump isn’t one to let the facts get in the way of a good story. According to Merriam-Webster, socialism is an “economic and political theory advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.” In the broadest sense, then, we are already a socialist nation. Over 61 million Americans get their health insurance through Medicare, and 63 million of us receive Social Security benefits every month. Who pays for these life sustaining programs? We do, the collective. And who administers them? The government. Earlier this year, every adult received a stimulus check to help offset our losses from the pandemic, while millions of small businesses received PPP funds and “loans” to help them keep their doors open. But much of that money doesn’t have to be repaid. Millions more businesses qualified for low interest SBA loans. Who pays taxes to make these funds available? We do, the collective. And who administers them? The government. All federal employees, from the janitors who clean the Capitol to the Congressmen who work there, are paid a salary and receive pensions and healthcare coverage. Likewise, local public officials, from teachers to sheriff’s deputies, receive similar benefits on the state level. Who pays for these salaries and benefits? We do, the collective. And who administers them? The government. WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
We rely on police, the military and the FBI to protect us each and every day, but guess who pays for that? We, the collective. And who administers those agencies? The government. Cities and counties create mega sites that they can develop, then offer tax incentives to industries who locate on that land. Who pays for this system of economic development? We do, the collective. And who owns the land and administers the program? The government. Public schools, public universities, and community colleges are supported in part by foundations, fees, and tuitions, but guess who keeps them operating? We do, the collective. And who administers our funds? The government. Teaching hospitals treat patients, train doctors, and engage in research to find new cures. To do that they rely in part on grants and federal funding. Who pays for that? We do, the collective. Who administers the money? The government. Local coliseums and stadiums serve as venues for sports and concerts. Guess who pays for those facilities? We do, the collective. And who owns those facilities? The government. Local recreation centers provide kids with a safe place to get exercise. Who pays for those centers? We do, the collective. And who owns those venues? The government. When our North Carolina state parks needed an influx of cash for renovations, who passed and paid for the referendum? We did, the collective. And who owns the parks that we visit? The government. The FDA makes sure our food and drugs are safe, and the post office makes sure our mail is delivered (usually). Who pays for that service? We do, the collective. And who administers the funds to sustain those services? The government. Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, and every other right-wing political hack can threaten us with socialism all they want, but if Joe Biden is elected on Nov. 3, he won’t bring socialism with him. It’s already here, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. ! [NEWS OF THE WEIRD] GOOD TIMING

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Alleghany County, North Carolina, on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 8:07 a.m., about the same time parishioners at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in
Charlotte, 100 miles to the south, gathered at Mass and heard this among the morning’s Bible readings: “After the wind there was an earthquake — but the Lord was not in the earthquake.” Father Richard Sutter, pastor at St. Gabriel, later told The Charlotte Observer he didn’t feel the rumble himself, but several worshippers approached him after the outdoor service to share the “Godincidence.” Father Cory Catron, closer to the epicenter near Sparta, also felt the
quake and said it made for “good homily material.” As his services ended later that morning, an aftershock rattled his church.
THE MOTHER OF INVENTION
As wildfires tore through parts of California on Aug. 19, Chad Little of Vacaville and his family prepared to evacuate, but Little changed his mind and decided to stay, he told KCRA. The family is in the process of rebuilding the home they lost five years ago in an attic fire, and “I can’t let it go,” he said. Little had hoses ready, but when the electricity went out, the water was cut off, so he grabbed a rake to clear away dry grass. As his cars and then his shop began to catch fire, he reached for the only liquid he had — cans of Bud Light, shaking and spraying them at the fire, dousing the flames just before firefighters arrived. “My buddies all tease me about drinking water-beer,” he said. “I say, ‘Hey, it saved my shop.’” He also managed to save his home.

Sonja Lee has been struggling to make rent on her Houston apartment since losing her job in March, and has talked with her landlord about payment arrangements, but on Aug. 17, she received an eviction notice in the form of a piece of paper taped to her door that read, “Guess who’s moving? You!!!” accompanied by a smiley face emoji and a demand to turn in her keys by 6 o’clock that night. “So y’all think it’s funny,” Lee told ABC 13 News. “There was nothing funny about that.” The apartment complex owner said the manager has been disciplined and has apologized.
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENT
Balladeer James Blunt recently revealed that early in his college years at the University of Bristol, he adopted a completely carnivorous diet in order to prove his manliness, according to Men’s Health. “I just lived on mince, some chicken, maybe with some mayonnaise, and it took me about six to eight weeks to get very, very unhealthy and see a doctor, who said, ‘I think you’ve got the symptoms of scurvy,’” he confessed in a podcast. In response, Blunt tried to reverse the vitamin C deficiency that causes scurvy by drinking a liter of orange juice every night, which caused him to develop acid reflux. “So as you can see, yeah, food is not necessarily my forte.”

Police in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, say a homeowner ignored a warning from his pet parrot on Aug. 17 because the bird “isn’t always a reliable source of information,” CTV reported. As a thief entered the home through an unlocked door, authorities said, the parrot issued a friendly “hello,” which didn’t alert the homeowner or deter the man from taking a credit card from a wallet. A neighbor photographed the suspect leaving the scene and security cameras later caught a 33-year-old man using the stolen card at a store, said police, who arrested him.

— Herbert McClellan, 27, took advantage of a distracted clerk at a Speedway gas station in Clearwater, Florida, on Aug. 18 to snatch about $100 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets, according to police, who were alerted by store employees a few hours later when McClellan returned to the store to claim the $30 prize offered by one of the tickets. Fox13 reported McClellan was charged with petit theft and dealing in stolen property. — Police in Hollywood, Florida, had little trouble tracking down a trio of thieves who broke into nearly 30 homes, stealing more than $150,000 in cash, weapons, mobile phones, electronics, jewelry, a vehicle and more, because all three were “already on pretrial release for previous crimes and ... wearing courtordered GPS ankle bracelet monitors,” Officer Christian Lata said. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Zion Odain Denvor Hall, 21; Tyrek Davontae Williams, 19; and Tremaine Raekwon Hill, 18, were arrested on Aug. 14 and charged with charged with burglary, grand theft and racketeering. Police believe they’re part of a larger organization committing criminal acts throughout South Florida. Additional charges are to come. !

THE TRIAD’S BEST 2020 W
elcome to our favorite issue of the year, The Triad’s Best! As many of you may know, this is our biggest issue all year, and something we spend several months working on. This year, exactly 166,410 votes were cast by nearly 30,000 people— setting a new record for participation! People from all over North America, Europe, Asia, and even as far as Australia made their voices heard by choosing all of their Triad favorites. Even though the year 2020 has been anything but predictable, we implore

you to take a break from anxietyinducing headlines and the constant feeling of impending doom brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 election year to celebrate the winners and runners-up of the Triad’s Best readers’ poll. While you’ll see familiar winners, we hope this issue will be an opportunity for you to discover many newcomers who have won some of the top awards. The way we listed everyone this year is pretty simple: There are “first-place winners,” “second-place winners,” and “runners-up.” As voting was fierce and highly competitive, you will see

There are many people to thank for making this issue possible: - To our readers, thank you for picking up our awesome paper, taking the time to vote, and offering your suggestions and ideas. -To the winners and runners-up, congratulations to you and know that we are all so glad to have you and your business in the Triad. t’s been a hard couple of years for the 2020 Triad’s Best Visual Artist winner, Antonina Whaples. The Business 40 shutdown almost completely ruined her livelihood, her house flooded and was almost foreclosed on by the bank, and on top of all that, she was recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Strangely enough, the pandemic has caused her more relief instead of grief. “It’s like I was where everyone is now emotionally and physically in relation to money and work last year.” Whaples said she was classically trained to produce hyper-realistic images, but not her art medium is mainly mixed-media. She grew up in WinstonSalem, so winning this year’s title of

Best Visual Artist “feels like one of those important pieces of my puzzles.” “As an artist, to be named something like that in your hometown feels more special than some of these international awards that I have gotten,” she said. “Especially since people voted for it, it has made me feel more affirmed.” In addition to being a visual artist, Whaples is the owner of Kindred Spirits on Trade Street, a Shaman, a published author, and a fashion designer. Last year, she gave half of her business to her shamanic apprentice, so that she could focus on creating art to sell at Kindred. The new book she just published is called Stone People: An Introduction to Stone Medicine, which she said is a descriptive book about “all the healing stones organized by the
chakra system, and how to use them to heal yourself.” Whaples also finished drawing her own 78-card tarot deck she calls the Piczanka Tarot Deck, which is set to be released this month. “[Piczanka] was the name of the holocaust camp that my grandmother was interned in,” she said. “So this deck is like a reflection and a message from those of us who have already conquered and lived through tragedy to others who are experiencing displacement in order to help them through their journey spiritually.” Her fashion line will drop on Sept. 26 during Winston-Salem Fashion Week. “I’m excited because it is all up-cycled clothing that Goodwill sponsored, and all of the looks are representative of important cultural lineage, experi-

ences, and the visual language of it,” she said. “And the music recorded with the film is original music by myself.” At the end of the year, Whaples also has plans to release her “Introduction to Herbal Medicine” online program, which has been six years in the making. “Thank you for the much-needed recognition work, and for supporting me on my journal thus far,” she said to those who voted for her as the Triad’s Best Visual Artist.

Brenda The Drag Queen
“It is exciting and I am thrilled,” said Brenda The Drag Queen about winning the 2020 Triad’s Best Newcomer Drag Queen title. Brenda the Drag Queen is not your typical disco dancing deathdropping diva—she’s a “hot mess express in a dress” who loves a filthy parody “and ruining all of your favorite previously reverent songs.” “I firmly believe that a drag queen is this magical creature and you should be able to give her a microphone and that is all that she needs,” she said. Brenda has performed at Greensboro staples such as The Bearded Goat, Twist Lounge, and for the 2019 Greensboro Pride festival. Brenda said she also enjoys using her drag persona to give back. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she accidentally started her own digital drag show on Instagram Live which led to a charity event that raised $2,300 for about eight local entertainers who lost their primary source of income

because of the pandemic. After that, her digital shows took off, and once she realized that she had found her niche in the digital drag world, she started doing shows more frequently and “like every other homosexual,” she ordered a ring light. Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. on Facebook (@BrendaTheDragQueen), is the next Mother-Daughter Filthy Drag Comedy Show with surprise special guest Aunt Barbara. Follow Brenda The Drag Queen on Facebook and Instagram, and show her some love with a tip on Venmo: @brendathedragqueen or CashApp: $brendathedragqueen.

Andy Drodge
“It feels a little strange and exhilarating at the same time,” said Andy Drodge, of winning the Triad’s Best Drag King title. Drodge started doing drag five years ago. “When I found out there was a way to experiment with gender while expressing myself, I had to give it a try.” Drodge’s drag persona can be described as a loud, in-your-face “banshee boy” that will either make you laugh or make you very scared. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Drodge had to adapt to the digital drag. “One of the most important things in my performances is the interaction I have with an audience,” they said. “So, not having that makes it very difficult to adapt. Luckily our community is very supportive and loving.” Drodge said the biggest reward of their drag career has been finding his chosen family and being able to express and explore their own identity through his art.
LGBTQ DRAG NIGHT OUT OR EVENT
TWIST LOUNGE DRAG SHOWS
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced would have to be overcoming the need to seek the approval of others,” Drodge said. “As a king, I’m told that I will not succeed if I do not meet certain criteria that I must perform and look a certain way in order to be well-received. I have found that to be completely spurious. It wasn’t until I started performing the numbers that I enjoy, and presenting myself in a way that I saw as cool that people started to take notice.” To support Andy Drodge and their art, send him a virtual tip via Venmo:@andromeda_momo or CashApp:$andromedamomo.

Break The Chain Kennel Kru
B
reak The Chain Kennel Kru is a four and a half-year-old endeavor that works in underserved communities assisting families with their dogs who live their lives chained up outside. “I am very honored,” said Sylvia Mayon, the founder of BTCKK, when asked what it feels like to win the Triad’s Best Nonprofit. “All nonprofits deserve recognition because we are all out there doing something to better our community.” Mayon said she started BTCKK because when she was 7, her parents abandoned her, and it was traumatizing. She found solace in her first adopted dog, Kona, who was also abandoned. “A lot of the families we serve come from a background like mine,” she said. “My testimonial to them is, you are chaining the one thing that can fill the WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
voids in your heart, that is always happy to see you, and always unconditional love.” Mayon said BTCKK provides and builds tethered outdoor dogs a 10-foot by 20-foot full kennel system to “break the chain” that tethers them in one spot for hours on end. For the 20 dogs BTCKK has served, the organization also makes sure they are fully vetted, and when the weather is unpredictable, the organization will board all of the dogs. Mayon said that typically, the organization would do one to two kennel builds a month; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed its operations down. BTCKK has lost the ability to host fundraising events since March, and COVID made it hard for BTCKK to stay in touch with dog owners, which Mayon said is one of the most important parts of the mission. “Pre-COVID, we would have four or five
volunteers go on a straw delivery, and since COVID, I have had to do it with one or two people,” Mayon said. “We aren’t able to hang out with our owners like we are used to because our owners are disabled, elderly, and we want to be very mindful of them as well.”
Mayon said without the help of her team, boarding partners, and donors, BTCKK would not be where it is today. For more information about BTCKK and to donate, visit the nonprofit’s Facebook page, @BTCKennelKru.

ribute acts reigned supreme in YES! Weekly’s 2020 Triad’s Best reader poll, with members of Spindle 45, and Taylor Vaden and the Memphis Thunder sweeping the board for best musician slots in addition to their awards as “Best Cover/Tribute” bands
in the Triad. Winston-Salem’s pop-cover group, Spindle 45, garnered the top award for “Best Cover/Tribute,” while members dominated the rounds in their instrument categories. “We’re so thankful for everyone who was able to vote for us and our band members,” said Paul Schuh, who placed second-place for “Best Bassist” on behalf of the band. “Best Vocalist,” Laurie Alley, who also won “Best Musician,” echoed the gratitude. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to perform with these fine musicians in any capacity,” she said of her bandmates, “we decide as a group what instrumentation to use in our arrangements. It’s a privilege to take part in that collaboration.” Beyond vocals, Alley plays keys, flute, and saxophone, which along with “Best Guitarist” Rick Gustaitis, enables the Spindle 45 repertoire to cover hits from the 1960s through today.
Laurie Alley and Rick Gustaitis of Spindle 45 “From Adele to Zeppelin,” the group noted, listing favorites among Pat Benatar and Maroon Five. Fans of “Best Piano Player” Trina Cleveland and Mark Yarbrough (runner-up up for “Best Percussionist”) may be disappointed to learn that they’ve left the group to pursue other projects. But Spindle 45 keeps spinning with Kenji Brown and Matt D’Amico filling the slots. “Both Kenji and Matt bring an incredible amount of talent and experience to the band,” Schuh said of the new additions, “and we’re so happy that they’ve been able to join us in this journey.” That journey is all about good vibes for Brown, a founding member of Rose Royce, the Grammy-winning R&B group behind the 1970s hit “Carwash.” The same rings true for D’Amico, who expressed excitement to start performing. “Put on your dance shoes, grab a partner and let’s party,” he beckons fans. The new lineup will debut during an online show, “Sunday with Spindle,” which the group hopes to broadcast Sept. 13 via

Youtube and Facebook Live. “All of the future live shows are still on the books as tentative,” Schuh explained, “but we’re very much looking forward to playing out in the area once we get past this pandemic.” “We’re all in this together,” he added, “and we look forward to the time when artists and fans will all be able to celebrate art in person.“ Second-place winners for “Best Cover/ Tribute,” Taylor Vaden and the Memphis Thunder, have likewise felt the pinch of the pandemic. “We’ve missed performing for our ‘Thunderheads’ and hope to be back at it soon,” said Vaden, who heads the Elvis tribute, adding the King’s trademark “thank ya very much” for fans and their votes. Vaden, who also won runner-up for both “Best Songwriter” and “Best Vocalist,” has been performing the songs of Elvis since childhood. ”Being a fan of Elvis’ music so early in life inspired me to develop my own vocal style,” he noted. ”For years, that ‘Elvis sound’ came through anything, I would sing, so it pushed me to find my own voice and begin writing my own music.“ As a solo artist, Vaden credits the King for exploring his current genres of country, blues and gospel. Meanwhile, his gratitude these days goes entirely toward his fans.
“To even be included on the long list of incredible singers and songwriters we have in our area is a huge honor for me,” Vaden exclaimed, ”to be a runner-up for both? That’s unreal!” He formed Memphis Thunder in 2015 with Todd Phillips (winner of “Best Bassist’’), Brad Ford (second-place “Best Percussionist”), and Scott Willaims (secondplace “Best Guitarist”). The group focuses on a classic Elvis experience, highlighting the 1950s era of Sun Records and the King’s early days at RCA. “Our show is designed for more of a theater atmosphere,” Vaden noted, ”it’s more a journey through the beginning of Elvis’ career.” With no shows on their books, for now, Vaden remains active playing churches and focusing on the ministry side of his music. “The pandemic has changed the landscape of what I do quite a bit as it has for most everyone,” he said, before thanking his audience once again. Indeed. A big round of thanks goes to the voters, with a congrats to the winners. Tributes top the Triad’s Best for 2020, keep reading YES! Weekly to see what 2021 will bring! ! CATTY LITTER
I’m a woman who just turned 30, and so is my best friend, who just got out of a three-year relationship. She’s now on the rebound hard — hitting on her co-workers, going Amy Alkon on multiple dates every week, hooking Advice up with different guys all the time, Goddess etc. I can’t decide whether to admire her confidence or be concerned that she needs constant attention and validation from men. Do you think this is healthy behavior? Should I tell her that she needs to stop acting out and work on healing from her relationship in healthy ways? —Worried Friend Nothing like women celebrating other women: “Yay, you, getting in regular workouts doing the walk of shame!” I get that you mean to help. Uh, help your friend, that is. However, it appears we women evolved to help ourselves by “helping” other women, or as I like to call it, “benevolent meangirling.” This plays out, for example, in telling a hot friend in a fabulous little dress, “I have to be honest, that makes you look a bit trampy,” and engaging in other acts of humanitarian frankness to help keep her from giving men whiplash and jamming up her evenings with lots of dates. These acts of female frenemyship are often subconsciously motivated, which is
why we can tell ourselves we just want the best for our friends while in fact serving our own evolutionary best interests. Hidden treachery is actually a primary feature of “female intrasexual competition” (women competing with women). Women are mistakenly seen as the sweeter, kinder sex. You hear people sigh, “If only we had women in charge,” as if this would lead to world peace, universal basic income, and cats that paw-dial 911 when their owner dies instead of eating their face. But this view of women as the better half of humanity is psychologically naive. Women aren’t less aggressive; they’re just differently aggressive. Aggression gets a bad name because it gives rise to uncomfortable emotions such as fear and, sometimes, to unexpected workplace activities, such as murder-suicide. However, aggression is actually a vital evolved motivation for getting our needs met so we can survive, mate, and leave surviving children to pass on our genes. Research on sex differences in male and female aggression by psychologists Anne Campbell, Joyce Benenson, and others suggests that while male aggression is direct, manifesting in, say, yelled threats, a punch in the nose, or a barstool upside the head, female aggression tends to be indirect and thus hidden. Though there are women who get physically violent with each other, Benenson explains that this happens rarely, and usually just in certain contexts (like impoverished neighborhoods). Generally, women fight other women with poisonous veiled aggression such as mean gossip, ostracism, shaming, and sneaky sabotage dressed up as concern for other women’s

welfare. Campbell contends that covert female aggression likely evolved out of women’s need to avoid physical confrontation, which could kill them or damage their reproductive parts, leaving them unable to fulfill their role as an infant’s primary caregiver. Depressing as all this twisted sisterhood stuff surely seems, an inclination to behave a certain way isn’t a mandate. So, if you’d prefer to be the sort of woman who acts in her friend’s best interests, you can be. However, the reality is we often think we know what’s best for somebody else, especially when we believe they’re harming themselves. In fact, a person sometimes needs to go a bit wrong to get right again. When (and if) what they’re doing ultimately proves unsatisfying, they’ll stop. Telling them to stop can actually be counterproductive, even if you feel sure you have their best interests at heart. Research by psychologist Jack Brehm finds that telling people what they should do seems to make them rebel and do exactly the opposite, like by continuing to do whatever they’d been doing, but louder and harder.
A more effective technique — one that’s proved successful in addiction treatment — is “motivational interviewing.” It starts with asking a person what they value deeply and ultimately want (romantically, in this case). After they reflect on that and answer, ask them how whatever they’re currently doing, whatever behavior they’re engaging in, aligns with their values and goals. This technique might not get you immediate answers (or any answers), but you might inspire your friend to reflect on behavior she might be engaging in somewhat automatically. And how nice if you’re doing this through some insight of your own — for example, on sisterhood ideals like, “There’s a special place in hell for women who do not create space for other women,” and how this can play out in reality: “I want to get your shoes in the shot, doll. Just take two more steps back” (right into that open manhole). ! GOT A problem?
