JUDITH ESPINOSA

International Relations

Judith was born in Queretaro and recently graduated from the international affairs program at Monterrey Tec Campus Queretaro. Since 2013 is a member of the SerVers program by Grupo RE, an organization that seeks to empower youth. She has been the coordinator of the program for Queretaro and part of the national board. In 2014 she participated in the National Conference on Dialogue and Deliberation in Pennsylvania, representing Monterrey Tec. Her main focus is the empowerment of vulnerable groups and community organizations. She likes to read, watch movies and rainy days.

JOSÉ FRANCISCO URRUTIA International Relations

Francisco Urrutia is from Mexico City and graduated in 2017 of the international affairs program from Tec de Monterrey Campus Queretaro. He considers himself an enthusiast of social development, which has led him to participate in projects like SerVers by Grupo RE, leading empowerments workshops in public high schools; “Techo” building emergency houses with low-income communities; and FORMAR, company dedicated to the pacific resolution of conflicts. Francisco has also developed the initiative “Yo Pongo mi Casa”, a Civil Society Organization that empowers vulnerable population in Queretaro state. Francisco believes that social development, sustainability, and public space are the most powerful tools to transform the world we inhabit.

YETZI TAFOYA Architecture

Yetzi Tafoya was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. She got her undergraduate degree in architecture from Tec de Monterrey Campus QuerĂŠtaro and participated in an international workshop with SebastiĂĄn Mariscal + Harvard GSD in Somerville, MA. She is passionate about Urbanism and Sustainable Design. She participated at the 3rd Pedestrian Conference, the largest pedestrian event in Latin-America, presenting a collaborative project with Urban Tactics Qro. She worked as a supervisor and digital modeler of thermal conducts on experimental walls in New Zeland. Yetzi is in the process of completing the accreditation to be a LEED Green Associate by the US Green Building Council.

ARMANDO QUINTANA Architecture

Armando is currently enrolled at Tecnologico de Monterrey’s undergraduate Architecture Program in Queretaro Mexico. He participated in Harvard’s GSD Career Discovery program in Summer 2015; and later joined ELOP*8, an environment-focused learning & operative platform by BFH, Switzerland. He is interested in the city and the built environment as a medium to provoke social, political and economic change. He’s approach is transcultural and transdisciplinary blurring boundaries aiming to find new mechanisms to create a more just society. He was a research fellow for Archeworks and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Interest Design. Armando has been part of the board of Factor Architecture and Design Summit, for the past four years, and currently is the editor of 14 Magazine, a publication that explores and broadens the role of architecture in the 21st century. He will be receiving a B.Arch. on December 2017.

WHAT IS IT? Center CEMEX-TEC for Sustainable Development

“The partnership CEMEX - TEC allows to join and potentate efforts in the matter of sustainable development in MEXICO, leading community development into a safer and more viable future” (Center CEMEX - Tecnológico de Monterrey, 2011) Founded in 2010, the center CEMEX- TEC for Sustainable Development understands sustainability as a continuous work towards social development, economic growth and the responsible use of natural resources. Sustainable development means “to satisfy the needs of the present generation without compromising the capability of future generations to satisfy their own needs” A community is considered sustainable when is planned, build, inhabited and/or modified with sustainable development criteria. In these communities needs to exist a good build and natural environment, a healthy social environment and promote economic growth. These principals are the basis of our action, translated in three main focuses: social, environmental and economic.

CEMEX -TEC Award 2016

The CEMEX-TEC Award 2016, is an annual recognition of the developments of proposals and high impact projects in suitable development, that promote economic growth, technology transference, the social involvement of communities and the preservation of natural resources in Latin America. The award: Creates an incubator of projects that advance the development of sustainable and inclusive communities in Latin America. Encourages research and implementation of sustainable solutions to issues linked to the urbanization of communities. Showcases success stories towards a culture of sustainability. Spurs creativity in the search for solutions to present and future challenges in the construction industry through an entrepreneurial culture with sustainability criteria.

CATEGORY TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES CEMEX-TEC Award 2016

The category â&#x20AC;&#x153;Transforming Communitiesâ&#x20AC;? is open to transdisciplinarity teams of 3 to 5 university students of Latin America, with proposals for the sustainable transformation of their communities, based on a real diagnosis. At least one of the team members must be in the fields of architecture, urbanism or civil engineering. The urban renewal proposals of underutilized or deteriorated areas must strive for a balance between the social, economic and environmental axis, and the inclusion of local people. Proposals for sustainable business models that promote investment in the communities, foster local economy, and harness local products and resources. Initiatives that promote a sustainable lifestyle: more livable communities, with better integration of their inhabitants, local economies and in harmony with their natural surroundings. Projects that improve the life quality of the communities through the solution of infrastructure problems, use, and state of common spaces and the integration of people in their community. Projects that promote the innovation and the transference of clean and eco-efficient technologies for the community and its inhabitants. [Email notifying the results] (Queretaro, 2006)

MUJERES INDEPENDIENTES COMMUNITY First Diagnose

Mujeres Independientes is located on the North side of the city of Queretaro, in the Epigmenio Gonzales district; in the state of Queretaro de Arteaga, Mexico. The neighborhood was founded approximately twenty years ago. It started as an informal settlement by self-sufficient women and single mothers. The neighborhood is located inside the urbanized territory of the city, surrounded by more informal settlements. Mujeres is an urban community since itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inside the limits of Queretaro metropolitan area, but because its peripheral condition there are very high levels of marginalization in the neighborhood and its soundings. (recording to the marginalization index map by The right tot he city: Theory and practice of the new urban rights of the 21st Century). The streets have stone paving and have access to public transit, which makes the community accessible from the city, 15 minutes by car from the city center. Site visits were key to determine that the best area to work would be the central block of the neighborhood, which has a public park surrounded by four streets.

TRANSFORMATION OF THE COMMUNITY Synthesis

Collective Territory is an initiative that fosters a more livable and safer community, strengthening the social fabric by the occupation of public space and a scheme of social shared investment. Through a rigorous diagnosis of the territory and participatory design, it aims to establish along with the neighbours a space where security, well-being, and social life could be foster from what is public.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS Socially equitable, economically viable, ecologically bearable.

The proposals aim to improve the quality of life of the community. The Community Welfare Center allows a social exchange that permeates outside the building and seeks to strengthen the social relations among the neighbors. Semi-public spaces such as porches and urban infrastructure, bring more eyes to the street, improving the perception of security. Social cohesion results in a greater organization and neighborhood empowerment in the improvement of their community. As a central part of the Community Welfare Center, the orchard is not only an area of environmental conservation but has an economic and productive potential that makes it relevant to the community. Connected to the orchard, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;natural pharmacyâ&#x20AC;? project finds in the local remedies knowledge, an environmentally responsible way of meeting health and wellness needs. Seeking to generate a sense of appropriation and care of equipment, it is intended to make a co-investment with the community. Self-managed events like fairs can contribute to the capital of the Center or result in the implementation of more urban infrastructure. Human capital is a fundamental part of the project, so the community itself can manage the center, obtaining in return, vegetables or medicines from the Wellness Center. It is intended to add institutional and personal contributions through crowdfunding. 43

INTERVENTION PROPOSALS Porches, Benches and Community Welfare Center

Being a simple, low-cost structure, the porches seek to generate an extension of the house that provides a comfortable and shading space. But also presented as a connection between the private and the public. When occupying common spaces it is sought that the perception of security increases with less favorable conditions for vandalism acts; benefiting not only the people of the house but the whole Mujeres Independientes Community.

Inside the Community Welfare Center, several workshops and lessons will be managed, always responding to the community interests. From training those interested in the natural pharmacy to acquire the relevant knowledge to lessons given by neighbors of the community about local skills possessed. It seeks to tie individual and public benefits together, or at least to make them closely interdependent.

Within the development of the project, the idea is that people can pay for the services obtained through the center by providing goods to the community, this can be by the impartation of workshops or by the donation of physical resources or by spending time helping in activities of the center.

Managed by the people of the community, this center will develop as a space dedicated to nutrition and alternative medical remedies. The goal is to value the work and knowledge of the people by integrating the orchard, giving them training programs and the contribution of individuals to the community.

Seeking to cover the integral development of the center and match environmental awareness with the basic needs of the population,the creation of community gardens on one side of the Center is visualized as the tool for self-production on one side for the medicinal herbs for the pharmacy and on the other for the fruits and spices intended to be accessible to the entire community.

Being below the porches, the easy to made benches seek that people can have a place with shade to sit outside and live the streets. It is intended that this can foster interaction between the neighbors of Mujeres Independientes and external people who go to the park; seeking to strengthen the social relations.
