This has been a heartbreaking week for this country. I struggled through the weekend trying to find inspiration to finish my job, building this paper for you to read. I cried a lot this weekend. The news of 2 mass shootings was overwhelming. I watched in horror with the rest of you as the body count kept increasing. Then the personal stories of heroism mixed with the tragedy of loss bombarded me. Parent’s protecting their baby and being shot to death. A woman trying to help an elderly person but had to abandon her to save herself. A nurse who ran inside to help rather than running away. “The uncomfortable truth” ~Me Me being me, I wanted to know why. I tried to find the manifesto written by the El Paso shooter. I went to the selfdescribed darkest place on the internet, Chan8. The same site the New Zealand shooter posted his manifesto before the Christ Church killings. It was already removed but my curiosity as to what type of place would house such horror in secret got the best of me. I read the evilest writings I have ever seen. This was a website filled with anonymous stories written by murderers, rapists, child molesters; the most heinous people that walk this earth were gathered there on Chan8. They are not behind bars, they are actively committing the crimes they speak of. My heart hurt so bad I couldn’t function. I read quips of a man who was raping his niece daily, describing it in a detail, punctuated with smiling emojis. A woman who had drown 3 babies because she enjoyed seeing the final bubbles exit the baby’s mouth. Were they true stories? They were anonymous because of the nature of the site. Its purpose is to allow these things to be said anonymously.

We know the manifesto of Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old self-described “Ethno-nationalist”, who murdered 51 people in New Zealand is true. We know the manifesto of Patrick Crusius who as of this moment, as I write this has murdered 31 people in El Paso, his manifesto was published on the site just before the attack. If you are reading this, you are likely not aware of these dark places that harbor evil intent as it is being acted out. I was not. I am now painfully aware. “Evil is unspectacular and always human. And shares our bed and eats at our own table.” ~Herman Melville We are in serious trouble. Not just as a nation, as a civilization. The contributors to this site were from across the world. I could only read what was in English. No, they were not exclusively Muslim extremist, Mexican illegals, or any of the stereotypical people are told to fear every day by the media and our government. They are much worse. They are co-workers, daughters, sons, doctors, lawyers. They are invisible to you and me. The World Wide Web has given them a platform to share their atrocities the same as Pinterest allows you to share recipes. Chan8 is down. It will be replaced if it hasn’t already. People need to pay attention. For lack of better words, get our heads out of our butts and stop generalizing who is evil based on their skin color, religion or lack thereof. It has never been more important than now to speak up. If you see something, say something. Teach your children to be vigilant. Teach your children to be good people. The monsters I saw on this site are products of something horrific. Prayers may help you feel better, but setting an example is the only way to stop this complete degradation of humanity. ~ Peace,

Summertime is for... Fun - oh yes! Frolicking - definitely! But what really gets my attention during the summer is FOOD! The art of breaking bread together has a very long history. I think Virginia Wolfe said it the best; “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Summer is a perfect time to celebrate food! We are so fortunate to have fresh locally grown food all around us. Even the markets are filling their bins with fresh produce from a few miles away. Not to mention all the farm stands. When you pull up and get out of your car you can actually smell the fresh tomatoes still warm from the sweetening sun. People have always gathered around food. I realized the power of food over the years. With my son actually. We both didn’t realize it way back then but we do now. When he was younger he would go skiing and hunting and camping and traveling with his dad. I wasn’t able to do a lot of those things. It was hard for me to “compete” as it were. I did however cook for him almost every night. I made his lunch in the brown paper bag, with a note attached that would most surely embarrass him when he got to school. The rule was “NO PHONES AT THE TABLE!” This was not only for us but anyone who may have a chance to dine at our home. We looked forward to it. We talked and filled each other in on our day.

When he was younger and it was just us - we would go on a date. The date consisted of driving to Friendly’s right in town. He would order the chicken sticks. Chicken tenders on a sticks that seemed to stick up two feet. His eyes got big and he dove in and ate every last crumb, knowing the ice cream was on its way. We laughed. We talked. That’s the part that made it so grand. It wasn’t where we were or what I made. I think he ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch for approximately four years straight! It was that we were there together, breaking bread. He is grown now and off on his life adventure. When he does come home we make it a point to visit his favorite Mexican place or he asks for one of his favorite home cooked meals. Still no phones allowed! It IS a powerful gathering. Don’t underestimate it. Simple as it is, these are the times that are etched into my memory and my heart. Celebrate your summer with frolicking fun AND food. Gather around the table and make it simple. Turn off those phones and talk. Check in with each other. Laugh and tell stories. Don’t forget you are building memories right here around the table. How Does Social Security Fit Into Your Retirement Income Strategy? It might not be on your calendar, but Aug. 14 is Social Security Day. Since it was enacted on Aug. 14, 1935, Social Security has provided some financial support for millions of Americans during their retirement years. While Social Security benefits, by themselves, probably aren’t enough to enable you to retire comfortably, they can be a key part of your overall retirement income strategy – if you use them wisely. To help you make decisions about Social Security, you will need to answer these questions: When should I start taking my benefits? You can take Social Security once you reach 62, but if you wait until your full retirement age, which will probably be between 66 and 67, you’ll get much bigger monthly checks, and if you wait until 70, you’ll get the biggest possible payments. Before deciding when to begin receiving your benefits, you’ll need to weigh a few factors, including your estimated longevity and your other sources of income. How should I consider potential spousal benefits? If you are married, or if you’re divorced but were married for at least 10 years, you could receive up to half of your spouse’s full retirement benefit (offset by your own benefit, and reduced if you claim early). If you outlive your spouse, you could claim survivor benefits, which can provide either your own benefits or 100% of your deceased spouse’s, whichever is larger. Consequently, the higher-earning spouse might want to postpone taking benefits for as long as possible to maximize the survivor benefit. How much can I earn without reducing my Social Security benefits? If you are younger than your full retirement age and you are receiving Social Security, the Social Security Administration will withhold $1 from your benefits for each $2 you earn over a certain threshold (which, in 2019, is $17,640). For the year you reach your full retirement age, your benefits could be withheld by $1 for every $3 you earn over $46,920. But once you reach your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without your benefits being withheld, although your benefits could still be taxed, depending on your income. Sole Proprietorships: Sole proprietorships are businesses that are not legally separate from its owner. They may go by a different name (“Doing Business As” or “DBA” or “Partnership” if there is more than one owner); however, legally there is no distinction. The month of July has been a good one for Mark who started out the month with a race on July 3 at Fonda in the Your Hometowne sponsored car. He started ninth in the feature that evening and ended up finishing in the fifth position at the checkered flag. Brett also raced that evening with the 602 Crate Sportsman and ended up with a 21st place finish with some valuable track time and experience gained for the first year racer as he raced with the more experienced drivers that evening. On July 13 in the 602 Crate Sportsman, Mark started the 25-lap feature in the 14th position and despite spending some time near the top five fell back to a 12th place finish at the checkered flag. Brett started his 20-lap Limited Sportsman feature on the outside pole and took the lead in the event at the drop of the green flag. Brett led every lap of the event for his second win of the 2019 season in the division after winning back on 5/11/2019. After a rainout on July 20, Mark and Brett were back in action on July 27 with Mark starting 11th in his feature event. By lap four in the event Mark was up to the fourth position but he paced himself and slowly picked off more cars to finish the race in the second spot. Brett also started farther back in the seventh position in the Limited Sportsman feature and worked his way up to the third position by lap two and gained one more position to finish second in another fine run for the first year driver. yourhometowne@gmail.com

The Lilies of Summer Summer is lily season and I love lilies! They take little effort to plant and grow, and the rewards are huge. They’re winter hardy, so once you plant them they stay forever, multiply quickly, and provide large, often fragrant flowers. Lilies are available as bulbs in economical packages from the garden center in early spring and later as potted plants among the perennials selection. The variety of sizes and colors is amazing. No wonder I love them so much! All lily varieties grow from bulbs. All the wonderful varieties we have to choose from were bred from about 150 wild lily types found worldwide. In fact, we have five native lilies that grow wild here in the northeast - the Michigan Lily, Turk’s Cap Lily, Wood lily, Trout Lily and the Canada Lily. If you are lucky enough to see one of these beauties, look but leave it alone. All are protected in New York State. The lily family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere, and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites, Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids. Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilies. Asiatic lilies mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. They are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatic lilies come in a range of sizes from 2’ to 5’ tall! To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Many Oriental varieties are hardy to zones 4 and 5, hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest,

showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5” to 7” fragrant flowers on plants up to 7 feet tall. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, you’ll notice more plants and flowers but they aren’t as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that they’re crowded and need to be dug and divided. Fall after frost or early spring when they’ve just started to sprout from the soil are the best times for dividing lilies. Another lily enjoyed by many is not a lily at all. Everyone knows them as daylilies, but they are not true lilies but hemerocallis. You have seen them growing wild in roadside ditches and just about anywhere. We can thank our ancestors who planted them generations ago. Hemerocallis is a Greek word meaning ‘beautiful for a day’. The name reflects the lifespan of each flower which opens in the morning and withers away at the end of a single day. Daylilies are about the easiest plants to grow. They love full sun but will thrive in partial shade and aren’t particular about the soil they’re planted in. Once established, daylilies last for a lifetime and longer. Only a few years ago, a clump of yellow daylilies was considered exotic. Now red, gold, peach and burgundy daylilies are turning up in perennial borders. Daylilies with bi-colored flowers, miniatures and repeat bloomers have also appeared. The daylily has come a long way from the common roadside flower that our ancestors planted. They have taken up a new role at the heart of the garden. Considering how easy they are to grow and how rapidly they multiply, you should give them a try. Thanks for the read. Feeling VS. Function One of the most common statements made in my office would be, “But, Doc, I’ve been feeling great until just the other day!” To which my response would be, “Well, Bill, how many times have I told you, it’s not about how you are feeling, it’s about how you are FUNCTIONING!” Most people are unaware that only 10% of your nerve fibers deal with pain and the other 90% deal with function. When someone is not feeling their best, their body has not been functioning correctly for a long time before that pain shows up. Pain is the LAST warning signal that your body sends to your brain that tells your brain “OK, enough is enough, you have to get this taken care of NOW!” This is why it is important to get checked periodically by a chiropractor—to make sure you are functioning correctly all the time. The only way to ensure proper function is to have a clear connection between your brain and your body. This is where chiropractic comes in because we, as chiropractors, work with your nervous system. Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord and all the nerves that go everywhere in your body. If there is interference in any one of those communication pathways, your body is not going to function to the best of its ability. Chiropractors make sure you have that clear connection between your brain and body so that your nervous system is functioning properly. When this happens, people tend to have less symptoms and more health. One of the most common problems when people first start coming in to get adjusted is that they start to feel better and they believe they are healed and no longer need to come in. This person drops out of care only to come back in with the same problem sooner rather than later. Now, you may be thinking “well, you didn’t do your job then and fix them the first time”. So, how long will it take to heal? Pain is usually the last thing to show up and the first thing to go away. When someone first starts coming in they start initial intensive care where they come in for frequent visits. Usually they are in obvious pain and discomfort because they have joint instability and nervous system dysfunction. Then, they get some relief because the inflammation is reduced and the tissue degeneration is decreasing. They are starting to improve and have an increase in range of motion and their muscle spasms are decreasing. Once they are improving function, a lot of times they become symptom free. This is the point where many people, like Bill, drop out of care—this will only result in that relapse of symptoms we talked about previously and chronic states of pain. Once we start the healing stage of care, visits become less frequent and we can start optimizing your health! This is where soft tissue repair occurs, muscles and ligaments strengthen, and spinal stabilization begins. Typically, we call this “wellness care”. Once you reach this stage of care, all we have to do is maintain your health and prevent these painful episodes from ever happening again. Robert E. Foti, an Army Verteran and Local Hero By Cheryll Hill

Robert E. Foti, a Schenectady County native and graduate of Scotia-Glenville HS class of 1967. Robert (Bob) enlisted in the U.S. army in 1967 where he spent 21 months (9/68 – 6/70) in Vietnam as an Airborne Infantry Soldier and Ranger Sergeant with C/1/503 and N 5 Rangers, the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Bob was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal w/V. OLC and the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Civic Actions Unit Citation Awards. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and returned to the area for a few years living the civilian life. Being sworn to his country and hungry for adventure, the call to duty was tugging at him hard. He went to work for the U.S. State Department on the WPPS Program providing personal security to U.S. Diplomats across the globe. He spent several

years being self-employed in the Security Field and is still a NYS DCIJ LE Instructor/Consultant. Now back to his roots, Bob has retired and resides in Scotia with his wife Barbara Bordeau. He is the proud father of his daughter Kim and son Eric and has 4 grandchildren. He is a current member of the VFW, American Legion, TREA, AUSA and ASIS. I am proud to know him as a friend, his wife Barbara and I have created a bond over the past year that has given me peace and friendship. Men like Bob walk down the street like any other person, we pass them by not knowing they are true heroes. Boston Cream Pie Crepes Filling: • 1 1/2 cups milk • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/4 cup cornstarch • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 4 egg whites • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream Crepes: • 1 1/2 cups milk • 4 eggs • 1 cup flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 8 teaspoon butter • chocolate sauce for topping To make Filling: 1. In saucepan over medium heat, stir milk, sugar, cornstarch and salt until thick. 2. In bowl, stir 1/3 sugar mixture into egg whites. Return to saucepan and heat 1 minute. 3. Remove saucepan from heat and pour in vanilla extract. 4. Transfer filling to medium bowl, cover and press plastic wrap to top of mixture. Refrigerate 1-2 hours. 5. In bowl, whip heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Fold into filling mixture. 6. To make Crepes: In bowl, whisk milk and eggs. 7. In separate bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt then add to milk mixture. Refrigerate 1 hour. 8. Coat pan over medium heat with butter; melt. Pour about 2 tablespoons batter into pan, coating pan evenly. 9. Cook until top looks dry then flip and cook 15-20 seconds more; remove from pan and transfer to plate. Repeat with remaining batter. 10. Spoon or pipe filling down center of crepes and fold over. Drizzle with chocolate sauce and serve. Recipe adapted from Taste of Home and Girl Inspired

Thai Barbecue Duck Kebabs Servings: 6 • 1 cup soy sauce • 1/2 cup rice vinegar • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup honey • 2 teaspoons sesame oil • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced • 2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced • 2 teaspoons red chili pepper, finely minced • 1/4 cup cilantro, minced • 3 Maple Leaf Farms All Natural Boneless Duck Breasts, thawed and skin removed • 1 teaspoon cornstarch • 2 teaspoons cold water • 3 red bell peppers, cored, seeded and cut into 2-inch chunks • 12 green onions, cut into 3-inch pieces • 2 zucchini, cut into 1-inch thick slices 1. In bowl, whisk soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, honey, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, red chili pepper and cilantro. Set aside. 2. Cut duck breast meat into 2-inch cubes and place in container. Pour 1/2 bowl of marinade over duck. Cover and refrigerate 2-6 hours. 3. In small saucepan over low heat, simmer remaining marinade 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Dissolve cornstarch in water and add to sauce. Simmer 2 minutes. Remove from heat. 4. Heat grill to medium heat. 5. Drain duck and discard its marinade. 6. Thread duck on skewers, alternating with pieces of red bell pepper, green onion and zucchini. 7. Grill skewers 3-4 minutes on each side. When done, duck should be slightly pink in center.

Grilled Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus (Keto Friendly) Servings: 6-8

• 1 pound Michigan Asparagus olive oil • 1package uncooked bacon, thin sliced • balsamic glaze (optional) • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste 1. Wash asparagus and trim ends. 2. Place asparagus on tray and drizzle with olive oil. Toss to coat. 3. Wrap 2-3 spears with one slice bacon. Repeat with remaining asparagus and bacon. 4. Heat grill to medium heat and clean grates. 5. Place asparagus bundles on grill and cook 3-4 minutes per side, or until bacon is crispy. 6. During last minute of grilling, brush asparagus bunches with balsamic glaze, if desired. Thomas Semon Thomas is a1st Class Midshipman, USNR in his final year attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. MIDN Semon will graduate in June 2020 with a BS in Marine Engineering Systems and a US Coast Guard 3rd Assistant Engineer’s Merchant Marine License. MIDN Semon served the past academy year on board three merchant vessels and sailed on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as he completed numerous ship engineering projects. He is now returned to campus to complete his education. He plans on applying to the US Navy for a commission as a naval officer and flight school in hopes of a flying assignment.
