A message from “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight” ~ Phyllis Diller There is no better cure for a bad mood than laughter. Not just a little giggle, but side-splitting, coffeecoming-out-of-your nose, hard-to-breath laughter. It’s like having an emotional colonic. Cleans out all of the bad stuff and purifies the soul. It’s hard not to feel better after a convulsion of hysterical laughter. When I want to laugh like that, there are a couple of friends I can always count on. “ Because of Bluetooth in cars it’s getting more and more difficult to tell who’s crazy” ~Me My best friend starts my day off with a call from her car on the way to work. The call always begins with a rundown of the day before, then mid-sentence she starts yelling at the person in front of her, it’s a circle!!! You don’t need to stop!!! Just go!!! For God’s sake! Then slides back into the previous conversation without missing a beat. I’m sure anyone near her is questioning her sanity and counting their blessings if she is heading in a different direction. On a good day she makes it to work without another “idiot” in front of her but I can always count on “where do you expect me to park?” Both entrances are blocked (or something similar) and the devil tongued twin emerges again with a humorous rant on peoples parking skills. We laugh like crazy, hang up the phone and our day is officially started. “There is little success where there is little laughter” ~Andre Carnegie With a kick start on the day we both go about our jobs a little easier because we have already had a good laugh. I see a lot of people on a daily basis. Customers, readers, community leaders; all hard-working people with a lot on their minds. I want to make them laugh, even if it is just for a minute. I want to leave them feeling better than they did when I walked in. If I can achieve that my job is not only easier but more enjoyable because I know I have made their day better. They will smile at the next customer that

yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105

comes in and be more successful themselves. It seems that it’s absolutely true that when you laugh the whole world laughs with you. “I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints - the sinners are much more fun” ~Billy Joel The end of my day is much like the start. My boyfriend is a jokester like myself and enjoys making people feel good. We go out and “share ourselves” with friends at our local establishments. Now it’s time for them to make us laugh, and they do a fine job. There’s Barry at the Bayou with his special Bayou greeting, telling us we are #1 (if you don’t get it don’t ask). Jen, Kate and Marci also of the Bayou can be caught laughing inappropriately and charming their customers with innuendos at any given moment. We have Stacey at the Pig N Whistle with the best deadpan delivery in town. She can bust you so hard with a completely straight face; it takes a minute to realize she is pulling your leg. Todd, the owner comes out in all his bigness and sits on my chair, completely blocking me from anyone and laughing the entire time. Jordan, his son always comes over with the greatest grin; he doesn’t need to say a word, his grin is contagious! Mike Maloney of the Charlton Tavern is a master! His Dad was known for his humor and Mike did not fall far from that tree. Then there is Stephanie at Carney’s with her little dance moves. She will be waiting on you and just bust into a groove while pouring your cocktail. All of these people make our community better by spreading a little laughter. Make sure you do your part by eating and shopping at our locally owned establishments. They are the backbone of our community. “ A good time to laugh is any time you can.” ~Linda Ellerbee Peace,

5 Ways to Become More Mindful

Mindfulness is accepting what is happening in the present moment without judgment. An example of a mindful moment is “I hear children playing down the street.” It is neither good nor bad, it just is as it is and your ears are processing sounds around you in the present moment. A non-mindful moment would be, “I hear children down the street and it is aggravating.” In this second instance, you have judged the moment. If you were to think “I hear children down the street and it is joyful,” this is an example of gratitude. The thought, “I should’ve done something more with my life,” is rooted in past regret and is not mindful. A mindful form of that thought would be “Today, is a new beginning. What will I do today?” or “This moment is my life.” Thinking about a time and place at a later moment is not mindful. Mindfulness can be used at any time to recover from over-thinking that may cause us to dwell in the past or worry about the future. In our western culture, the tendency to avoid the present moment and judge everything can lead us toward anxiety and in worst case depression, in best case unhappiness and discontent. We can use mindfulness as a tool to reclaim our present moments and create opportunities for more contentment in our lives. Somewhere along the line, we may have decided that it is ‘responsible’ to think ahead however, spending too much time in the future or the past can lead us to chronic discontent and stress. On the surface, it would seem that mindfulness would be the easiest thing in the world to master, however accepting what is and doing it without judgment is one of the hardest things for our human minds to achieve. Mindfulness requires practice and our focused attention. For example, the act of returning to our breath in meditation is a focused attention on the present moment and non-judgmental reconnection with our body. To bring more mindfulness into your life... 1) Be present: Become aware of what are you hearing, feeling, connect with your body, feel your feet touching the ground. Focus on these tangible, present moment activities, practice non-judgment about them. Reconnecting to these physical realities can prevent us from filling our time and minds with over-thinking about the past and the future. 2) Maintain an openness to new experiences: Rather than fearing what the future will bring, know that whatever occurs can be enjoyed or dealt with at the time it occurs. We do not need to deal with anything before it occurs or think about all kinds of scenarios that can cause us anticipation and stress. When we respond with curiosity rather than judgment, we reduce our suffering. 3) Practice non-attachment: Learn to surf the wave of life. Know that you cannot hold people and experiences still. Life is flowing and it is not for you to manage, but rather occurring outside of your control, unfolding as it will. While we can control our reaction, focus on recognizing all that comes in and out of your life and how that is perfectly natural. Things are falling apart and together all the time and often, in ways that you may never have been able to imagine. yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105

4) Recognize you are part of a whole: Connect to nature and community and appreciate that you are part of something bigger than yourself. Feel gratitude for what is around you - the people and surroundings that provide you with a complete life. Note the interconnectedness of all things. 5) Send yourself and others compassion: You cannot be compassionate to others without being compassionate to your own self. Many struggle to send themselves kindness and suffer for lack of it. Rather than judging or controlling a situation or others, feel connection and empathy to people you like, people you don’t know, and even people who may aggravate you. Your ability to respond with compassion is scientifically proven to improve your overall emotional wellbeing and has also been connected with longevity. In his book, The Art of Happiness, the Dalai Lama advocates focusing on the commonalities, rather than differences, between you and another person to cultivate compassion. The more mindful you become, the more you will realize the ways in which you have been operating ‘mindlessly’ or on auto-pilot with a head full of worries or a belly full of uncertain that prevents you from true joy. Try to practice more mindfulness and see where it takes you. The results of mindfulness on your level of contentment will amaze you; it can help you create a sanctuary from life’s stressors you may have never known before. Aligning our inner selves with our outer lifestyles can deliver clients (and everyone) to a place of purpose, peace and power creating profound and lasting transformation. The Center offers engaging, entertaining, and empowering programs and coaching around all of these activities. Follow our calendar and programs at www.center4c.com and feel free to contact us at (518) 344-6725.

Lean for life: 5 ways to lose it for good It’s easy enough to lose a few pounds for a short period of time, only to gain it back. It’s much harder to achieve long-term fat loss. However, you know people who appear to be permanently in beach-ready shape, so it is possible to be lean for life. This begs the question: how can you lose the weight for good? The answer to this quandary is not found in a single habit or action, but rather in the following 5 Lean for Life Habits… Lean for Life Habit #1: Reimagine Yourself Up until now you’ve accepted the shape that you are in, and even if you hate it, you’re comfortable with it. Read that again to make sure it sinks in. You are comfortable with the body that you have right now, and until you decide it’s no longer comfortable then you’ll be stuck in the shape that you currently have. Now spend time reimagining yourself leaner. Really let that new image sink in until you’re more comfortable with it than you are with the image of your current body. Rinse and repeat. Lean for Life Habit #2: Break Up With Sugar Look, Sugar, we have to break up. It’s not you; it’s me. Sure, we’ve had some good times. You’ve tickled my sweet tooth and pleased my taste buds, but loving you is a double-edged sword that leaves me heavy and out of shape. So this is it, we are through! As silly as that sounded, your relationship with sugar is holding you back from living in a lean for life body. It’s not only refined sugar that is messing with your body composition; in order to be lean for life you’ll also need to manage your intake of natural sugars.

12

| Yo u r H o m e t o w n e | X C I V 2 0 1 7

Lean for Life Habit #3: Forget Dieting Going on a “diet” implies a start and end date, but if you really want to change your body composition for good then there is no end to your healthy lifestyle. It’s a marathon of adapting to healthier habits to maintain for the rest of your life. The day that you stop trying is the day that your body reverts to it’s old (less svelte) shape. Don’t worry, the more time that you get under your belt with healthy living, the easier it becomes. Soon your lean for life habits will feel like a normal day – just as your current habits feel like a normal day now. Lean for Life Habit #4: Plan Your Cheats Being lean for life doesn’t mean swearing off pizza and ice cream for the rest of your days. (Thank goodness!) On the contrary, you’ll find that planned cheat meals of your favorite foods are more enjoyable than ever before. The key is that you will be planning your cheat meals in advance and containing the excitement to one sitting each week. Lean for Life Habit #5: Be Part of a Fitness Family Belonging to a group of fellow fitness enthusiasts is key to making and maintaining your body transformation. Being fit is easier achieved in a supportive and encouraging group, rather than alone. The accountability provided from your fitness peers will save you from missing workouts and will get you to push yourself to try harder. One of the most gratifying parts of being in a fitness family is the day when your support makes an impact on a new member. To give the encouragement that was given to you is a special moment that will stick with you, and will recommit you to your fitness lifestyle. I have created a fitness family that I’d love for you to join. Call or email today to see how you can find your place here with us! Call 424-7878 or email gina@precisefitnessandtraining.com Get started today with a free consultation.

Chiropractic—it’s not just a quick fix! I was just at the gas station filling up, and a patient of mine was there too. He yelled across the islands of pumps, “Hi Doc, I’ll be calling you tomorrow to come get another adjustment!” “OK, Paul,” I yelled back. The man pumping gas next to me rolled his eyes and shook his head as he looked at me. “Chiropractors,” he said, “What a joke.” “Not a fan of chiropractors, huh?” I asked. “Nope,” he replied, matter-of-factly. “I gave it a try once when I was in a ton of pain and it didn’t do anything for me at all.” “How many times did you go?” I asked. “Just once,” he said, “but that was enough. As I said, it didn’t do anything for me at all - NOTHING!” “Yeah,” I said, “I know exactly how you feel. I went to a party at my sister’s house once, and I was totally starving. I asked her if she had anything to eat set out yet and she said she had a bunch of shrimp, so I ate one. But I have to tell you, I was still really hungry afterward.

That one shrimp didn’t do anything at all to get rid of my hunger NOTHING! Shrimp are a joke. I’m not ever going to eat a shrimp again.” “Cute,” he replied, “I know, I know, you’re saying I needed to go more than once, but that’s not the same thing at all.” “It’s not?” I asked, “Did the doctor recommend more than one visit?” “Yes, He said I should come 3 times per week for a couple of weeks and then we would see what happened. He said he thought I would feel better after that. But as I said, the one adjustment he gave me didn’t do anything AT ALL!” “I understand, really I do. And I agree that my shrimp example was extreme compared to your situation. But I had the same thing happen once with a doctor too. I had a sinus infection, so I went to the doctor and got a prescription for some antibiotics. I took the first pill, but I have to tell you, I felt the same way you did. NOTHING happened at all after that pill!” He replied, “That’s not the same thing at all! Everyone knows you have to take antibiotics a couple of times per day for a week or 10 days or whatever, otherwise they don’t have a chance to work. They aren’t some kind of miracle, instant-cure pills, you know.” “And chiropractic adjustments are?” I asked. “Well, no…I don’t know...the point is that that adjustment should have done SOMETHING for me, shouldn’t it?” He asked. “Do you think the ONE antibiotic pill I took had ANY effect on my body at all?” I asked. “I’m sure it had SOME effect, just probably not enough to make a big enough difference for you to notice.” he replied. “I see,” I continued, “But you say that’s not the same thing as what happened with you and the chiropractor?” He sighed. “Look; there’s another big difference between our situations too. You only had to go to your doctor ONCE for your antibiotics. I would have had to go SIX TIMES over two weeks with mine! That seems a little excessive, don’t you think?” “OK, let’s see,” I said, “You would have had 6 adjustments over 14 days at your chiropractor, and I would have had 30 treatments over 10 days from my doctor. Now it’s true that the treatments I received were all done by me at home, since I was the one giving myself the pills, but I have to ask you, what seems more excessive; 6 adjustments in 14 days, or 30 treatments in 10 days?” “I never thought about it that way, and you make a good argument.” He said. “I guess I was just impatient and didn’t want to spend the time or money waiting to feel better“. Chiropractic works whether you believe it or not! But it is not meant to be a quick fix. It is a process that takes time. If you are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, give me a call today! Dr. Donovan is now accepting new patients! 353 Saratoga Rd. Glenville, NY 12302 399-3810 www.thriveglenville.com

Why Should Your Child Dance? “All children are born artistic. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.” ~Pablo Picasso

Dancers are kinesthetic artists, using bodies as their medium and movement as their creative work. Dance education encourages the development of kinesthetic intelligence as it pushes the limits of physical ability while it simultaneously demands corresponding complex brain activity. The body strengthens as the brain capacity increases. Children are innate dancers, exploring the world through physical movement as soon as they are able to do so. They are also instinctive creators. Expanding a child’s imagination is also part of the dance education at Modern Dance with Ginny Martin and Dana Yager. Providing children with dance instruction offers them opportunities for self-expression and communication within the realm of physical activity. This enhances kinesthetic intelligence. Grounded development in problem solving, judgment in the absence of rules, risk taking, and higher level thinking are all by-products of a professional dance instruction environment. Students are constantly afforded opportunities to recognize that there are multiple solutions to problems – an important asset to have in the world’s current working environment. Dance education also provides a strong base from which to make informed analysis and judgment about the body. The ability to better interpret nonverbal communication is fostered and soon becomes second nature. Learning the movements of other cultures develops a deeper understanding and respect of humanity. Dance, whether thematic or abstract, is a visual archive of the world and its people. This encourages positive options in an unpredictable world. Dance education also benefits children in the development of body appreciation, physical fitness, sound health practice, proper nutrition, and effective stress techniques. The quality of a future adulthood is enhanced by the acquisition of these assets and the understanding of their importance. Instilling a sense of self-confidence into every dance, no matter what age is also an important aspect of dance education. This can be achieved not only through proper technique and choreography, but perhaps more importantly through improvisation as a free mover. If you want a child who is creative, healthy, self-assured, and empathetic, why not consider dance as a positive source for all these things. Free classes are being offered in August for the Creative Movement 4-6 year old level! Classes are on August 10, 17 and 24 at either 4:30pm or 5:30pm. Feel free to take one, two or all three classes for free.

How Your Trust Can Help a Loved One Who Struggles with Addiction Substance addiction has become common across a broad spectrum of our community members. Whether the addiction is related to alcohol, opioid pain relievers, street drugs or is behavioral like gambling, we all want our loved ones to be safe. A properly created estate plan can help. The idea that money from an inheritance could end up fueling those addictive behaviors can be a particularly troubling one. Luckily, it’s possible to frame your estate planning efforts in such a way that you’ll ensure your wealth has only a positive impact on your loved one during their difficult moments. Funding for treatment One of the ways your trust can have a positive influence on your loved one’s life is by helping fund their addiction treatment. If a loved one is already struggling with addiction issues, you can explicitly designate your trust funds for use in his or her voluntary recovery efforts. In extreme cases where an intervention of some sort is required to keep the family member safe, you can provide your trustee with guidance to help other family members with the beneficiary’s best interest by encouraging involuntary treatment until the problem is stabilized and the loved one begins recovery. Incentive trusts Incentive features can be included in your estate planning to help improve the behavior of the person in question. For example, the loved one who has an addiction can be required to maintain steady employment or voluntarily seek treatment in order to obtain additional benefits of the trust (such as money for a vacation or new car). Although this might seem controlling, this type of incentive structure can also help with treatment and recovery by giving a loved one something to work towards. This approach is probably best paired with funding for treatment (discussed above), so there are resources to help with treatment and then benefits that can help to motivate a beneficiary. Lifetime discretionary trusts Giving your heirs their inheritance as a lump sum could end up enabling addiction or make successful treatment more difficult. There’s a better way. Lifetime discretionary trusts provide structure for an heir’s inheritance. If someone in your life is struggling, you can rest easy when you know the inheritance you leave can’t make the problem worse. Of course, you want to balance this lifetime protection of the money with the ability of your loved one to obtain money when appropriate. Your choice of trustee(s) is a critical consideration, as your trustee will have discretion to give money directly to your beneficiary or pay on your loved one’s behalf. Appointing a trustee is always an important task, but it’s made even more significant when that person will be responsible for keeping potentially harmful sums of money out of the addicted person’s hands. Let us take some of the burden off your shoulders by helping you build an estate plan that positively impacts your loved one and doesn’t contribute to the problem at hand. Crossword on page 20

After the brain, our eyes are the most complex organs in our body. A majority of all the information that we gain throughout our lives comes from visual cues such as reading, writing and observing. Thus eyes play an important role in our intellectual growth. So, given the important functions our eyes perform for us, it would only seem logical that we’d give them the best care possible. However, we often take eye care for granted. Perhaps because there are so many myths and old wives’ tales surrounding eye health, that we don’t know what really works and what doesn’t. Here are some simple tips for maintaining healthy eyes well into your golden years. 1. Pay attention to what’s on your plate Studies have found that nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help prevent age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. 2. Maintain a healthy weight Regular exercise along with a well-balanced diet is also important. Maintaining a healthy weight can cut down the risk of obesity related diseases such as diabetes – a leading cause of blindness in adults. 3. Limit alcohol and kick the smoking habit It has been proven that heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk of age related macular degeneration. Smoking also makes it more likely for cataracts and optic nerve damage to occur. 4. Protect your eyes from the sun Sunglasses aren’t just for style! Excessive exposure to the sun’s ultra violet (UV) rays increases risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Wear sunglasses that block 99-100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. 5. Use safety glasses If you work with hazardous substances or if you are around excessive airborne particles, always use protective eyewear. Regular spectacles should never be used as a substitute for safety glasses 6. Look away from the computer screen Staring at a computer screen for long periods can cause eyestrain, blurry vision, dry eyes and/or inability to focus on objects at a distance. To protect your eyes, ensure that: • Your glasses/contact lens prescription is up-to-date • Your monitor is placed in such a way that your eyes are at the same level as the top of the monitor • Also, remember to follow the 20-20 rule to protect your eyes – i.e.: Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. 7. Know your family’s history of eye health • Many eye conditions are hereditary, so it is important to talk to your family members and know if they have been diagnosed with any eye related diseases or conditions. It can then be discussed with your doctor to determine your range of risk for developing that particular condition and preventive steps can be taken to lower the risk. 8. Get Regular eye-checkups • Everyone including young children should have their eyes examined regularly. Having an eye test won’t just tell you if you need new glasses, it can also help spot early signs of eye conditions such as Glaucoma, even before you are aware of any symptoms. Top 10 Mistakes When Purchasing a Home from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, RealtyUSA

1. Believing there is just one perfect house for you When you buy a home, it is more a process of elimination than selection. Properties meeting your needs come onto the market daily, so there are always new possibilities.

7. Forgoing a home inspection Saving a few dollars today by avoiding an inspection can cost you big money in the future. Licensed home inspectors can detect issues that may be invisible to the naked eye.

2. Not considering the future Make sure you take into consideration whether the home you are looking at will suit your needs in 5 years. What works today, may not work tomorrow.

8. Not purchasing a home protection or warranty plan If your seller is not offering a home warranty, you may want to consider purchasing one. Consider it a “mini insurance plan” to cover basic repairs during your 1st year of homeownership. Speak to your Realtor to find which plan best suits your needs.

3. Searching for a home only by visiting open houses, the internet or newspaper ads Your best bet is to contact a Realtor who can give you up-to-the minute information on homes that meet your needs, narrowing down the selection to only those homes you want to see. 4. Looking only at the house, not at the community Buyers should make a list of needs and/or concerns about their community at large, taking into consideration crime, schools, proximity to services, environmental conditions and the like. It will give you greater confidence in your purchase. 5. Submitting an offer on a home without being pre-qualified Speak to a mortgage lender before you begin your home search and definitely before you sign a contract for purchase. Prequalification will help you determine exactly how much house you can afford. 6. Believing that the sales price is the only cost involved Make sure to ask your Realtor or mortgage lender for a closing costs estimate and also consider Attorney and title company fees. Insurance costs and pre-payment of homeowner association fees may also come into play as part of your home purchase.

yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105

9. Failure to purchase adequate insurance Consult an insurance agent to ensure you have sufficient insurance to cover your new home. 10. Working with a real estate agent who isn’t fully dedicated to you and your satisfaction Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing a real estate professional committed to serving your needs…both before and after the purchase of your home. Evacuating With Your Fur Baby: 8 Steps Every Pet-Owner Needs To Know In Case Of Disaster Storm season is upon us, which means that people all over the country are preparing their homes for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and more. For many people, this means getting a “go-bag” ready, keeping your car stocked, and preparing just in case local authorities recommend evacuation. While evacuations are rare in our area it is not unheard of. Remember Hurricane Irene? You probably know exactly how to get yourself ready to go — but do you know how to prepare for evacuating with your pets? Evacuating with pets is more complicated than just tossing them in the car and getting out of town. Of course, taking your pet with you is the most important thing to do if a storm is imminent, but there are plenty of other things to do ahead of time if you think you might need to evacuate your home. Evacuating can be overwhelming — both for people and for pets — so make the process as easy and painless as possible by following the tips below! #1: ID Your Pet: The CDC explains that because disasters can occur without warning, you should always be prepared. One of the most important things you can do is make sure that your pets’ collars and tags are up-to-date. Their tags should have your current contact information, just in case you get separated from your fur babies. Additionally, you should microchip your pet — this is the best way to guarantee you’ll be reunited with your pets if they get lost. Pet Evacuation #2: Snap A Current Photo: According to Ready.Gov, you should always have a current photo of your pet in order to identify them if necessary. This won’t be a problem for most pet owners (as we take photos of our pets nonstop), but make sure you have one that doesn’t just capture how gosh darn cute they are, but also shows their defining features. Pet Evacuation #3: Secure Your Pet: Before an emergency, purchase a pet carrier for each of your fur babies — then write your name and contact information, along with your pets’ names, on the carriers. When you purchase the carrier, get your pet familiar with it, and practice transporting them in the carrier before an emergency. This will make them more comfortable with being inside the carrier during an evacuation situation. You should also make sure you have extra leashes and harnesses to keep them safe while they’re outside. Pet Evacuation #4: Identify Pet Friendly Shelters: Not all shelters set up for humans are able to take pets, so if you plan to stay at a shelter when you evacuate, make sure you find one that is okay with pets. The same goes for hotels — if you are going to stay in a hotel or motel during evacuation, find one that allows pets to stay as well. Ready.Gov

26

| Yo u r H o m e t o w n e | X C I V 2 0 1 7

explains that although it should be a last resort, some animal shelters will provide temporary housing/foster care for pets that cannot be with their humans during times of evacuation. Pet Evacuation #5: Coordinate A Backup Plan: No matter what you are planning on doing with your pet when you evacuate — boarding them, leaving them at a shelter, or taking them with you — make sure you have a backup plan. Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors about what they’re doing with their pets, and see if you can help one another out with evacuation. In case of emergency situations, you may not be able to get home before evacuating — the ASPCArecommends having designated caregivers (who hopefully live nearby) who are comfortable with your pets and willing to care for them in a time of need. Pet Evacuation #6: Separate Dogs And Cats: Ready.Gov explains that pets can sense when something is wrong, and it may cause them serious stress and anxiety. Even if your dogs and cats are normally fine together, the stress of the situation may cause them to act irrationally, especially if they are in confined spaces. For this reason, separate your cats, dogs, and other pets when you’re evacuating (or anytime during an emergency situation). Ideally, every animal should go in a separate crate or carrier until you can get them to a calm, safe place. Pet Evacuation #7: Prepare A Pet Emergency Kit: Many people have human emergency kits and “go bags” with necessary items, but it’s important to have them for pets as well. Pet emergency kits should include enough food and water for two weeks, food and water bowls, medical records and any medications, poop bags, kitty litter, and other clean-up items, and any comfort items your pet might need (like a bed, blanket, or toy). Pet Evacuation #8: Get A Rescue Alert Sticker: The ASPCA recommends that everyone have a rescue alert sticker near the front door of the house in case of any emergency. The sticker should include information on any pets that live in the house. A rescue alert sticker can help in case there’s ever a fire or floor at your house so that first responders know to save your pets, but it can also be helpful during an evacuation situation. If you have a rescue alert sticker and you evacuate your home, write “EVACUATED” on the sticker so that rescue workers know they don’t need to search your house for pets. Don’t Get Scammed! This summer’s weather has left prime pickings for scammers! Weatherproofing Scams: $15,000 Solutions to $150 Problems “Free Basement Inspections!” When a community has been hit by a series of rainstorms, you can bet the offers for “free basement inspections” will start rolling in. The answer? It’s usually an expensive pump or excavating the foundation to waterproof, when the problem was really clogged gutters or a drain blocked by root growth. Tree trimming Scams : “I was passing by and noticed you had some branches down… your trees really need a trim.” Frequently, the branches are down because the scammer broke them off. If hired, they do work on “unexpected problems” that run up exorbitant charges. Too often, the scammers threaten consumers if the extra charges are disputed, and sometimes follow the owners to the bank for cash payments. Tips To Protect Yourself • Be suspicious about any unsolicited offer to work on your home. Remember, there is no problem so serious it can’t wait a day or two for you to do some research. • Check out the contractor with the local Better Business Bureau. • Get references, particularly from jobs done a while ago. • Use local companies whose address you can verify. • Get more than one written estimate that includes details about the materials. • Check with your town or city to see if permits are required. Don’t let a contractor work without the necessary permits. • Don’t assume the lowest estimate is the best deal. Check the quality of the materials. • Be clear that you won’t pay for any work not included in the estimate, unless it’s agreed upon in writing. • Always be sure the contractor has valid insurance. • Always report a scam to local law enforcement and the Attorney General’s Office. If you believe you have been victimized by a summer scam, please contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Complaint Hotline at 1-800-771-7755 or online at ag.ny.gov

Caring For Your Lawn All spring long we’ve had to mow our lawns at least once a week to keep up with its rapid growth. Like most of you, I’ve been mowing it low to try and gain some time between mowing. When the heat and dryness of summer arrive, we need to adjust our attitude and our mowing height. To help your lawn survive dry summer weather let it get taller…as tall as your lawn mower will adjust…4” to 5”. If you continue with the low mow, the sun will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill the roots of your grass. A lawn left long shades the soil. You may like the look of a shorter lawn, but if the soil temperature goes above 85° to 90° for three consecutive days, the root system dies. Once that happens, you’re looking at a lot of grass seed and a lot of watering in late summer and early fall to repair the lawn There comes a time when you just must water. Traditional wisdom tells us that, for a lawn to remain healthy, it needs an inch of water a week. What you need to know, though, is that the lawn needs that inch of water all at once to get any real benefit from it. Water your lawn heavily then not at all for a week. With a limited amount of water available to most of us, we try and move the sprinkler around the yard to make sure that we get the whole lawn watered at one time without any regard to whether it is getting enough water for more than temporary relief. If you have watering restrictions that only allow

you to water every other day for two hours, let your lawn sprinkler soak one area for the full two hours. When your next watering opportunity arrives, move the lawn sprinkler to the next section and soak it with at least an inch of water. Folks with underground sprinkling systems need to follow the same advice. Set them up to soak one zone each day with an inch of water then do a different zone the next day. By putting an inch of water on the lawn, you’ll be soaking the soil to a depth of 6”. Water at this depth in the soil will not evaporate quickly, and it’s where the roots of the grass are located so it can be absorbed. Quickly spraying the lawn might perk it up briefly but most of that moisture is lost to evaporation and can never penetrate deep into the soil to get to the roots. At this point folks will ask, “How long do I need to leave the sprinkler on to put on an inch of water?” Since we all have different lawn sprinklers and water pressure, I can’t answer that question. This is something we must all determine on our own. You simply need to take a small, empty tuna fish can and place it in the area you’re watering. Don’t shut it off until it is full. Make a mental note of how long it took, and you’ll always know how long your setup takes to put out an inch of water. That’s it. Water deeply then take a break for a week. Thanks for the read. Backyard Sheds Backyard Sheds is a family owned and operated business with over 20 years of experience in the manufactured shed industry. When you shop with at Backyard Sheds (BYS) you are likely talking directly to the owners, Fred and Sue Becker or their son Ryan who is heading up the Burnt Hills location. There are a few extra hands on deck but there are no commissioned sales people, making your purchasing experience all about you. All products are handcrafted by the Lancaster Amish Community. The builders have been with BYS for no less than 15 years and are trusted friends as well as business partners. Backyard Sheds takes great pride in supplying its customers with the best quality sheds, garages, gazebos, play sets, available anywhere. They strive to treat their customers as they would like to be treated. You will never be pressured on their sales lots, but should you have questions,

they will be answered straight forward and with your best interest in mind. Don’t be surprised if they ask you a few questions; after all they specialize in customized sheds, and can take their standard structures and turn them into a custom shed built especially for you. Chicken coop? Playhouse? Storage shed? Combination? No problem, you bring your ideas and they’ll bring their expertise. Their purchasing process ensures you will be able to find exactly the size and color shed you are looking for. First and foremost, they constantly look for new long lasting green products to add to their manufacturing process. They continuously add new design 30

features to choose from as you custom build your shed, pool house, or garage. This includes new siding styles, new finishes and paint colors, new door styles. It’s amazing how the little extras like adding iron window box holders add a new dimension, or curved trim on the door and windows creates a whole new look. Keeping it green, their flower boxes are made out of recycled plastic, and use LP Building Products like SmartSide and TechShield! With 60 – 100 sheds in stock between their 3 locations you will have plenty to look at. Getting an idea of size and style that is best for you becomes an easy task with just a leisurely walk around one of our display lots. Roof line choices, colors, door styles, all become simpler decisions when you can see the actual product. Once you decide on a particular product Backyard Sheds will give you an exact cost and an estimated date of delivery. Now is the perfect time to stop using your garage as a storage shed and have BYS build a structure you will be proud of on your property. Your car will thank you. Your neighbors will be envious when you easily store your outside furniture, mowers, bikes, 4 wheelers or toy of choice in your new storage shed built just for you! Fred, Sue and Ryan have lived in the Capital District for most of their lives, they know what to expect from our harsh winters to blazing hot summers. Their product is built to withstand the Northeast extremes and will add value to your property. Stop by their Grand Opening of the Burnt Hills location on April 15th and enter to win a Mini-Barn!
