inally the growing season is here! Admittedly Paul and I feel a little late with our plantings but Mother Nature has not been very cooperative. I can assure you that as you are reading this we have finished planting our annuals, the vegetable garden is completed and we will be rocking in our chairs taking in the beauty of our toil. This year the change of season has brought about a lot of other changes in our life and business as well. Change, it’s something that many of us fear yet once we do it we wonder why we hadn’t done it sooner. This issue of YHT marks some changes that we hope you will like. Just like a garden, when you own a business you have to attend to it, nurture it and grow it. Sometimes that means that you need to bring new people with new ideas onto your team to make it happen. With our community changing and growing we felt the need to embrace the new growth and give YHT a facelift. As most of you know by now that our team is small, it is me, Paul and a graphic artist that deliver YHT to you each month. Design is key to our business and as the landscape around us is changing we know that we need to change to our design to mirror what is going on in our community. We want to remain fresh and attract new readers while keeping our current readers engaged. To achieve that we have sought out the services of Mark Myers of Myers Design. We chose Mark for several reasons, of course his graphic art talent being forefront; Mark also brings a broad knowledge of technology and organizational skills to the table. In just 1 month he has streamlined our process and freed up our time to do what we like to do, see our customers face to face. Time to be in the community more, and be more involved with the day to day interactions of the Rt 50 corridor. Time to stop and smell the flowers. One more reason we chose Mark, his moral compass lines up directly with YHT and our mission. That is key to us. We hope you watch as we evolve and please let us know what you think. This is our first month on our new journey and we want you to be part of it. You can email us or give us a call, we welcome your input. Now that the paper is finished for the month Paul and I will stop and smell the flowers, as soon as we get them in the ground! ~C

Decorating Tips from The Speckled Hen By Maureen Culver
W
elcome to The Speckled Hen’s monthly article, where I introduce you to new ways to decorate your home with primitives. Like many of you, I’ve been spending the last few weeks cleaning up the yard and getting my porch ready for summer! So this month I’ve come up with some great suggestions for giving your porch or patio an extra primitive touch. If you don’t have a large space, add some small detail – garden tools, wooden boxes, bee skeps or small antique furniture. Birdhouses are also a great addition! They are easy to find and come in so many different shapes and sizes. You can even make your own primitive birdhouse from reclaimed wood! If you have a collection of birdhouses, use a potting bench to display them. Want to add some color to your porch? Fill an early wagon with a washtub, potted plants and gourds. To complete the display, use old, worn, painted shutters for the perfect backdrop! If you don’t have space for a wagon, a wire carrier is a great container for your potted plants.
gardening tools or flowers and herbs for drying. Don’t throw away those broken rakes – they make great display pieces! I have siding hooks that you can hang use to hang them, come to the shop and check them out!
We have designer dogs too. They’re called mixed breeds.
The Speckled Hen is hosting an Open House on Friday, June 27th! There will be lots of goodies to eat and door prizes – I hope to see you there! Maureen Culver 38 Saratoga Road Scotia, New York 12302 Phone: 518 369 8771 thespeckledhen38@gmail.com

Memorial Day: In Our Hearts
M
emorial Day is one of respect, honor, gratitude and admiration. It has a special meaning for all of us. The old saying that freedom isn’t free rings load and clear. It has been 5 years since 1st Lt. Jared W. Southworth was killed in action in Afghanistan. He left behind a wife, four young children and a loving extended family. Like so many others who have fallen, Jared laid down his life so we can enjoy ours.
What many see as a motto, “God, Family and Country,” was a way of life to Jared and so many others like PFC David Taylor Miller, Capt. John J. McKenna IV and Lance Cpt. Anthony J. Denier. The courage and dedication to put oneself in harm’s way is something only a few are willing to do. Let us never forget their selfless sacrifice. We owe them all a debt we can never repay. Although it has broken our hearts to have lost a loved one, we can take comfort in the fact that Jared, like so many, wanted to defend our country. Like all who have fallen before them and will fall in the future, let us give thanks for those American Heroes. Not only on this day, but every day, let us honor and salute our fallen brothers and sisters who have truly given us the land of the free and home of the brave. As many hearts ache for their loss, as does ours, let their memories never fade.
Frozen Fantasy By Ginny Martin
M
y summer class for 7 to 10 year old Beginning I Modern Dance students will be a good example of Ginny Martin magic! I’m calling Ginny Martin this class, Frozen Fantasy. Using the phenomenal music from the Frozen movie soundtrack coupled with my choreography for “Let it Go” and my dance improvisational structure for “Do You Want to Build a Snowman”, this eight week summer dance session will be a winner. I offer summer dance classes for my own dance students, but other young dancers are certainly welcome to join us. This dance class will be 75 minutes long incorporating modern dance instruction for the first hour followed by 15 minutes of fun craft activities related to the Frozen Fantasy theme. We will decorate an Olaf blown out egg, frost summer, snowman cookies, and fashion an icicle belt to wear over the the beautiful, white, tunic dress that is included in the price of this class. Students will perform for parents and friends at our last class. There are two time choices for this class, Tuesday 4:00 to
5:15pm and Tuesday 5:15 to 6:30pm. Classes begin on Tuesday July 8 and continue for eight weeks ending on August 26. The fee is $130. This class is for 7-10 year old children with some movement experience. Children just turning 7 with no movement experience will be too young. If you have heard about Ginny Martin Modern Dance and wondered why so many children and parents have enjoyed the experience, this is a perfect opportunity to get a peek at what I do. I promise you – your child will be delighted and so will you! Dana Wojcik will be offering summer, modern dance classes for older students. Please check my dance website for the schedule and description of those classes. I will be offering some free dance classes for 4-5 year olds and 6-8 year olds later this summer. Please call if you are interested in partaking. Ginny Martin Modern Dance with Ginny Martin 518-399-5802 www.ginnymartindance.com www.danceclassathome.com

Deck Prep Done Right! t’s Time to Clean and Prep your Deck for This Summers BBQ’s & Entertaining.
Trust me, it’s not about hitting the deck with a 2800 psi pressure washer, effectively scoring the wood fibers to the point it requires extensive and meticulous sanding to repair the damage. The truth is when you use less pressure, more water and the proper products to accomplish the annual task your deck will be clean and undamaged. That said, we need to ask you a few questions to point you to the proper products! Q’s: Are you going to clean, brighten or strip the deck? Do you intend to recoat it? What finish are you looking for? Transparent, Semi Transparent, Semi Solid or Solid? Once you decide to take on that maintenance project, do it the “right way” with the correct cleaner, brightener or stripper and be environmentally responsible to get the best results from your investment of time, and hard work you need to know what level of usage you expect. Big parties or occasional traffic? The products we recommend will differ. Come on in and have that talk with us- we will be happy to get you going with all the right products you need to get it right the first time! Protect Your Eyes
W
ith summer on the way, more people will be spending time outdoors and UV protection will be top of mind. Most people think about the protection of their skin, but we should also be considering the safety of our eyes. Many are unaware of the eye health risks associated with spending too much time in the sun without the proper protection. The eye occupies less than 2 per cent of the whole body surface area, but it represents the sole organ system to allow the penetration of visible light into the human body. Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, summer or winter, the American Optometric Association urges us to take measures to protect our eyes from the sun’s UV rays in order to decrease the risk of eye diseases and disorders. Overexposure to UV rays is quite serious and can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, or, in some cases, skin cancer around the eyelids. Other disorders that can occur are abnormal growths on the eye’s surface and even sunburn of the eyes. These conditions can cause blurred vision, irritation, redness, tearing, temporary vision loss and, in some instances, blindness. The effects of solar radiation are cumulative and permanent, it’s important to develop good protection habits early, such as purchasing proper sunglasses for young children and teenagers. The lenses of children’s eyes are more transparent than those of adults allowing shorter wavelength light to reach the retina. In fact, experts say nearly 50 percent (or more) of our lifetime exposure to UV rays may occur by age 18, given that many children spend significantly more time outdoors than the average adult. The AOA, recommends parents purchase sunglasses for all children, including infants. To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation and screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light. The amount of UV protection sunglasses provide is unrelated to the color and darkness of the lenses. A light amber-colored lens can provide the same UV protection as a dark gray lens. With so many lenses available, it’s a good idea to ask a professional optician for help when choosing sunglasses. Different tints can help you see better in certain conditions, and a knowledgeable optician can help you choose sunglass tints that are best suited for your needs.
Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher’s mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again. ~Jimmy Piersal, 1968
Be sure to see your doctor of optometry at least every two years for a comprehensive eye examination. It is a good way to monitor your eye health, maintain good vision and keep track of your solar radiation protection needs as well as new advances in eye protection. The fountain of youth T
By Gina Sabatini
urns out the sought-after magic elixir has been right under our noses! I’m talking about water. Pure, simple water. Sadly as much as 75% of adults suffer from mild, chronic dehydration, a condition that dramatically works against your weight loss efforts. Though you probably don’t think about it often, water is the most essential element, next to air, to your survival. The simple combination of two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen makes up more than two thirds of your body and is involved in a host of bodily functions that we routinely take for granted. Just to name a few: Water: 1. Works to regulate the thermal condition of your body 2. Serves as a lubricant in your joints 3. Helps flush toxins from your blood 4. Gives your skin a clear, glowing complexion 5. Assists with digestion, pulling all the usable nutrients out of foods Aides in disease prevention (Drinking 8 glasses a day has shown to reduce your chance of colon cancer by 45% and bladder cancer by 50% You’ve probably heard that you need to drink plenty of water in order to drop weight, but did you ever wonder why? 1. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Fill your stomach with a glass of water before each meal and you will find that you won’t eat as much. Keep hydrated all day long and watch as your desire to snack decreases. 2. Water increases your body’s ability to efficiently metabolize fat. This means a decrease in your overall body fat. (And who doesn’t want that?) 3. Water is the perfect substitute for high calorie beverages. Most of us consume
more than our share of calorie-packed beverages. Smoothies, shakes, frozen mochas, soft drinks... you get the idea. When you trade your high calorie beverages in for a tall glass of water you will expedite your results in a major way.
The Speckled Hen
The Other Side of the Story... You should also know that failing to drink enough water comes with serious consequences... Your body will shift into “preserve” mode—which means you will store more fat. Bodily functions will slow—leading to an overall decrease in energy levels. Headaches will become an expected nuisance—your brain is over 70% water. To avoid dehydration check out the following 5 Hydration Tips: #1: Caffeinated beverages — such as coffee, soft drinks or energy drinks— cause your body to lose water. After you enjoy a dose of caffeine replace the lost water by drinking 2 times that amount in water. #2: Add a slice of lemon to your water to spice things up. #3: Always carry water with you throughout your day—keep a bottle in the car, at your workplace and next to your bed. #4: Exercise and hot summer days both increase your body’s water requirements—make a mental note to drink before, during and after exercise or while out on a hot day. #5: Make it a habit to begin your day with a large glass of water then drink a glass before each meal and one between meals. #6: There is one other thing you can do to achieve you fitness goals in the shortest amount of time possible – work with a certified fitness expert like me! Want to know more? Just call or email today to set up a consultation, after all, getting you into great shape is my passion.

Warmer weather is free and new beginnings can be very expensive By Pattie Rakvica Here is a funny story for you.... Over the past few months I have been putting some money away to do some things around the house. A new picket fence being one. Remember awhile back I mentioned the paint was peeling off of it, well, now actual pieces of the fence are falling off in a strong wind. The patio is becoming worn, wobbly and faded. The new picket fence is in and already starting to weather from the warm sun and rain. Before you know it, it will blend in as if it has always been there and soon its paint will be peeling once again. As for the patio - that’s a much bigger project. I needed to call in the experts. I called a friend that does exactly this for a living. He came out and we walked around the yard and measured from here to there. As he calculated in his head he came up with a number. As that number spewed from his lips, my mouth fell and hung open only to close with a full blow laugh out loud. I reminded him that I didn’t have a lot to spend. With that said he gave other suggestions to bring the cost down. Somehow I thought the price would come down more knowing I just saw the little patio stones at Lowes for $ .38 each. After realizing the space I needed to cover with those little $ .38 stones is equal to the square footage of my home, it adds up quickly. I broke down and told him exactly what I had to spend and after we both laughed one more time. This is what he said... “Pattie, you should go buy some new patio furniture, get an outdoor carpet, some string lights and a good supply of margarita mix and invite me and my wife over for few!” I gave him a hug and told him I liked the way he thinks. I bet you know what happens next. The new furniture has been ordered, the outdoor carpet is festive and vibrant. The lights are strung and light up the evening. The new double lounge chair is next to the fire pit with a gorgeous colorful ceramic end table. I needed something to hold the pitcher of margaritas. I am sad to say that the purple patio furniture will be comfortably nestled in the shed. I just didn’t have the heart to get rid of it quite yet.
Legal Tools while Alive W
ills can assist people in managing their assets and affairs after they pass away by providing a plan for your estate and family after you pass away. Everyone should makes plans for themselves while they are alive. Everyone should have a Health Care Proxy and Power of Attorney form. Health Care Proxies can be found at doctor’s offices, hospitals and attorney’s offices. Power of Attorney forms and Health Care Proxies should be discussed when you talk to an attorney to draft a Will. Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy Forms are useful and necessary to protect yourself. The Power of Attorney allows the person named as your agent to assist you with your financial, legal and personal needs from the time you execute the document until the end of life. The Power of Attorney forms tend to be general and durable. General meaning they apply to a broad set of situations. Durable meaning they are effective from the time they are signed and notarized by you and the person you wish to be your agent, until the end of life. The Health Care Proxy allows the person named as the agent to make medical decisions if a doctor determines you are incapacitated. Doctors will talk to you for your own decisions on health care procedures while you have capacity. Health care proxies are needed for more than just end of life decisions. Health care proxies permit a person to consent to procedures to heal if you need healing and cannot make your own decisions. Living trust also can provide management of assets while you are alive. Please contact me if you wish to consult with someone on planning. It will be my pleasure to help.

I guess you can say I got the best of both worlds. A few new things and some of the old are still there. There is more area to sit with friends, both new and old. More wood is stacked for those cooler evenings and the citronella candles glow right next to my strung dragonfly lights. The big double lounge chair with its pillows all fluffy make you want to nestle in and roast a marshmallow or two. I still think a new patio would have been nice, but the old one still brings with it many get together’s with friends and family. Now isn’t that what summer is all about? Well, I gotta run. I need to make sure my new lounge chair is in just the right position for lounging. If you’re in the neighborhood, the picket fence is still there, feel free to stop by for one and enjoy the free sunshine and my new-er patio. As always, I wish you peace, joy and plenty of free warm weather! Pattie Rakvica idriveaware@gmail.com

Avoid Problems by Updating Beneficiary Designations by Christopher Nyhan, AAMS
L
ike many people, you might not particularly enjoy thinking about your estate plans, but such planning is necessary to make sure your assets go where you want them to go. And it’s just as important to regularly review your plans with your tax, legal and financial professionals in case any changes are needed. For instance, some of your wishes expressed in your will may be overridden by beneficiary designations you filled out years ago. If these designations become outdated, your assets could be passed to those you didn’t intend.
You might be surprised at how many of your financial assets and legal documents have beneficiary designations tied to them. If you have an IRA, a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, a life insurance policy, an annuity, a transfer-on-death (TOD) arrangement, or any of a variety of other assets or accounts, you almost certainly named a beneficiary. And this beneficiary designation offers a simple, direct and efficient way to get assets in the hands of your loved ones who survive you. However, as time goes by, you may experience many changes in your life — and when your life changes, your beneficiary designations may need to follow. But if you are like many people, you might forget to update these designations after a marriage, divorce or other change in your family situation. And because the beneficiary designation is a legally binding document, the asset will go to the person you once named as a beneficiary, regardless of your current relationship status. It really doesn’t take much effort to look over your accounts and legal arrangements to ensure that your beneficiary designations are current — and if they aren’t, it’s pretty easy to change them. In fact, for some financial accounts, you may be able to update the beneficiary designations online. In any case, plan on reviewing your beneficiary designations regularly, but especially when you experience a change in your life. Here’s one more thing to keep in mind: Make sure your current beneficiaries are informed that they will eventually be receiving your 401(k), IRA, life insurance proceeds or other assets that require a beneficiary designation. This advance knowledge may help your loved ones as they plan and maintain their own financial and investment strategies. Although it’s clearly important for you to update your beneficiary designations and to communicate your actions, you will still need to attend to other areas of your estate planning, such as providing care for minor children or dependents, deciding who you want to receive specific items that do not carry a beneficiary designation, naming someone to manage your affairs should you become incapacitated, and specifying the control you wish your beneficiaries to have over their inheritance. These are just a few examples of estate-planning considerations.

You scambled for the balls I hit, (Short -winded more than not) Yet every time we’d play a game, You praised the “outs” I caught. It seems like only yesterday, You wiped away my tears, And late at night I called your name, To chase away my fears. Though time has changed your handsome grip, Your hair is snowy white, Your gait a little slower now, Thick glasses help your sight. Oh, do I thirst for years gone by, To be that growing lad, Re-living all of the memories, Of growing with my dad.

West Wind Acres is a pasture based farm. We raise chickens for meat and eggs, sheep, pigs, and cattle. Our animals are rotated through fresh pastures and wood lots through out the year, living naturally with no hormones, or antibiotics. Our cattle and sheep are fed 100% grass and hay. Pigs at West Wind Acres are able to decide if they would like to eat from the pastures and wood lots that they live in or if they prefer they are offered organic grain. Our Freedom Ranger meat chickens are moved to fresh pasture daily, they also are fed organic grain. Buying your meat from a local pasture based farm has many benefits including recycling your money into the local economy. Buying local keeps people in our community employed. Our farm is 100% transparent so our customers can see exactly how their food is grown and raised. Pasture raised meats are much healthier than their grocery store counterparts. The meat has less fat, cholesterol and calories, and more vitamins, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) Our meats can be purchased through our website for pick up at the farm, or delivery on the first Tuesday of the month to drop points throughout the Capital District. We also sell "Tasty Meats" CSA. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Here are the basics of our CSA: A Farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Interested consumers purchase a “share” aka a “membership” or “subscription” and in return receive a box of meat each month. There are three sizes available: family size, regular size and single size. West Wind Acres CSA can be started at any point, the term is 12 months. This creates an arrangement that has benefits to both consumer and farmer here are just a few. Consumer: • Know how your food is raised and build a relationship with the farmer • Get exposed to new cuts of meat, learning different ways to cook • Enjoy local, healthy, nutrient dense tasty meats Farmer: • Receive payment earlier in the year to help cash flow • Have opportunity to get to know the people who eat their food • Ability to forecast demand It's a simple enough idea, but its impact has been profound. Tens of thousands of families have joined CSAs, and are now eating fresh, locally grown food and supporting their local economy at the same time. Give us a call or visit our website and treat yourself to the freshest, cleanest, humanely raised meat available to put on your dinner table.

Add tomato puree, maple syrup and Soy sauce. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until sauce thickens slightly, about 20 minutes. Stir in vinegar. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Marie’s husband Paul invented a great update on a chili dog. This is a Barking Dog* which is Garofalo’s hot dogs topped with Garofalo’s own pulled pork and lightly sauced with Sweet Baby Rays or kick it up a notch and mix the pork with any one of Dinosaur BarB-Que Slathering Sauces *The Bark refers to the outside crunchy part of good pulled pork and Garofalo’s has the best. It’s good to have a little of that bark mixed in with the rest of the
pork to give it a good texture.
A Healthy Salad
Marie came up with a lighter version of the traditional mac salads which has all that mayonnaise, a pasta salad recipe featuring the Chicken Pesto sausage Select a bowtie 1 lb bowtie or a fusilli (twist) pasta from Garofalo’s specialty Italian Pasta’s cooked according to package directions, let cool and toss with one of Garofalo’s extra virgin olive oil’s and a dash of Garofalo’s “essentials” spice mix. From there you add a few sliced links of our chicken Pesto sausage healthier than pepperoni) and some shredded carrot for color, Garofalo’s pitted kalamata olives, sliced bell pepper and red onion and voilà your done.

Stay Tuned with PAUL HILL
W
hen we think about GE, the first name that comes to mind is Thomas Edison. In reality he had more than one business interest in electricity-related companies: He had the Edison Lamp Company, in East Newark, New Jersey; the Edison Machine Works, a manufacturer of dynamos and large electric motors in Schenectady as well as Edison Electric Light Company, the patent-holding company backed by J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilt family for Edison’s lighting experiments. On April 24, 1889 those companies merged to form the Edison General Electric Company. It wasn’t until 1892 that General Electric was formed by the merger of Edison General Electric Company of Schenectady, New York, and Thomson-Houston Electric Company of Lynn, Massachusetts with the Schenectady plant used as headquarters for many years thereafter. Out of the 122 years that GE has been the cornerstone of employment in our area, I contributed 42 years of my life making a career that carried me into retirement - 42 years is roughly 34.43% of the company’s existence. My Father began his career in the 1940’s and retired from Gas Turbine in 1979 and now at 91 yrs. old, he patiently awaits his monthly pension check, part of his “reward” for his service based on whatever formula was in place at the time. I can tell you that formula wasn’t all that good, his check amounts to just over $500- hardly enough to buy grocery’s let alone pay bills. It’s May 1 2010, I was to show up- hand my picture ID over to my facilitator and leave- in a total of 8 minutes, 42 years was over and my obligation to “go to work” was satisfied. Go home and enjoy life while you wait for your pension check- Obviously my wife had other plans for my retirement, she had the foresight to create a family run business to make sure neither of us got stuck in a rocker-no complaints.
not so great to hear the story’s from some of the older folks, not unlike my Dad who can barely make ends meet on the pension they receive. Whatever rare adjustments made to their pension over the years has not kept up with the cost of living. Many of these people are barely getting by. I will be the first to tell you that we all understand the need to “plan” retirement, but I will also say it’s easier said than done. Years can fly by like minutes, especially when every cent coming in has a bill it needs to go to and financial decisions to save for retirement tend to get set aside- in retrospect I have a hard time quantifying the 42 years I gave GE- it seems like only yesterday I walked into Bld 49 on 3rd shift as an 18 yr. old kid, it was November 5th 1968. There is no single answer to this dilemma, everyone’s situation is different. To say- Hey! Save your money sounds good- but life doesn’t work like that. What I do believe in is “fair share” and the tens of thousands of people who dedicated most of, if not ALL their life to the company deserve more than a clock, a cake and a handshake. Never forget that GE was built off the backs of the working man & the salaried folks need to realize that their benefits come directly from our contract negotiations. Let me assure you the “meatball” (our collective name for the GE logo) didn’t just decide to become benevolent to the workforce, our benefits were earned on the picket line. When you read about the profits that GE enjoys and take a peek at the retirement benefits that the CEO’s enjoy such as Jack Welch’s 417 MILLION DOLLAR severance pay- consider the “little guy” the one who actually built the product having to EXIST on $500.00 a month- Do the right thing GE- take care of those who took care of youStay Tuned.
Once my retirement check arrived, I was thrilled that I was allowed to stay home and collect checks, but it didn’t take long to realize that the check I get today just might be the one I get 30 yrs. from now God willing and those folks will be the ones asking the same question I ask today, how can you live on that small check? On May 15th, I participated in the annual pensioner’s march on GE, we marched in remembrance of Helen Quirini, the voice of our retirees who after a lifetime of dedicated public service passed away back in 2010. It was great to see the people I worked with over the years but

Sam Speaks... BY SAM CAPUANO
Old Business W
hile researching last month’s column on Burnt Hills High School from back in the day, I dusted off my 1981 school yearbook and Spartan Sports Program to waken the echoes. In doing so, I looked with interest at the back sections of the books. These are where the advertisements of local businesses are located. These ads provide an excellent document of what the business climate was in the BH-BL area at the dawn of the Reagan era. Some of these businesses are still around, such as Gil’s Garage, Curtis Lumber, Knight Orchards, Odorless Sanitary Cleaners. Emerich’s and Lakeside Farms. A couple of places remain, albeit in slightly different configurations. Included here is the Jack Donlon State Farm Insurance agency in East Glenville. The agency is still in the same Saratoga Road location (John Craig now runs it), but I fondly remember Mr. Donlon as a smiling, kindly gent with a white crew cut. I had him one year as a religious ed teacher at Immaculate Conception, and it was a wonderful experience. Another ad which shows a bit of a business change is the one for “Fogg & Son Automotive & Marine Service.” At the time Fogg’s was located on 533 Saratoga Road (where EZ Own Auto is currently located) and was merely a service station. Now of course, they are just a tad north of that original location, and offer both sales & service, in a state of the art facility. Many businesses which advertised that year, alas, are no longer with us. Some came and went quite quickly, such as Papa’s Old Fashioned Parlor. Papa’s was a decent pizza joint located next to the Old Homestead. Their ad boldly proclaims, “It’s New – It’s Great.” Well not great enough, because it wasn’t around long enough to get old. Another place advertising in 1981 just left us (the tragic fire a few months ago), and that is Burnt Hills Lanes. Some places were around forever, such as Veeder & Yelverton Pharmacy. The V&Y was such a landmark I am guessing it will be the subject of a future column. I had totally forgotten about the Carl Company until I saw their ad, which was complete with that weird logo with the Big C; kind of like the Cincinnati Red’s trademark. Carl’s offered some fine shopping in the Willowbrook shopping area. And, while it wasn’t as cool as their location in downtown Schenectady (which was so traditional it even had elevator attendants), it was a great place to shop right in our back yard. And, if you had to shop for sporting goods, you needed to look no further than The Road Runner on Kingsley Road. Their ad says, “For the very best in athletic footwear,” and it was. I was on the Burnt Hills track team for years; I, and many of my teammates would head over to Road Runner for our shoes. I smiled when I looked at the ad for the Lobster Pound. What a great seafood restaurant. Biggest and tastiest jumbo shrimp you ever experienced. For whatever reason, during a few years in the early 1980’s it was also the place where a bunch of us youngsters dined on New Year’s Eve. Sam’s Chinese Restaurant has occupied this space for years. One of the larger ads in the yearbook has a few pictures of Dennis the Menace. This of course means Dairy Queen Brazier. Everyone of all ages enjoyed the DQ. It had a salad bar, great burgers, and the trademark curl on top of their ice cream cones. It was a favorite after school hangout for those of us in the high school, kind of a 1980’s version of a malt shop. We must have made nuisances of ourselves, too, because it seemed like we were always getting kicked out. Main Street in Ballston Lake was well represented in the ad section, by places which are now mere memories, such as Main Street Tavern, Fanning’s Market, and Burnt Hills Pizzeria/Ballston Lake Market. The latter joint offered up a tremendous roast beef sub. Main Street Tavern was not the only place one could wet their whistle. There are ads for a bar gone for years (Sylvester’s Tavern), and one which recently shuttered its doors (Poor John’s.) The Poor John’s spot shows their ubiquitous logo, which was that W.C. Fields-looking dude. Or was it a caricature of John himself? Either way, they tell us in the ad, it’s “Where the winner’s meet.” And, many of us did just that. ‘Til next time, keep on smilin’.

ark Mortensen had a busy month of May in the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M Teo car as he has been running double duty at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway on Saturday evening and the Glen Ridge Motorsports Park on Sunday evenings. At Fonda he had a third place finish on Saturday evening May 17 to go along with his first win of the 2014 season on Saturday, May 10. At Glen Ridge Mark has two third place finishes and a 21st place finish to his credit and unofficially sits third in points as of May 18 while at Fonda he is tied for second in points as of May 17 only 12 points behind the leader. Below is the race story from Mark’s feature win at Fonda on Saturday, May 10. Chris Schaffer led from his pole position start at the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap sportsman feature with Brian Pessolano second after the two made up the front row for the start of the event. Pessolano stayed close to the leader during the first lap of the race and on lap two Pessolano used the outside groove to take the lead in turn two.
Mortensen Motorsports After the first few laps of the feature were completed it was evident what drivers and crews set up their car to run on the outside of the speedway as Pessolano was running the outside groove on the speedway along with 2011 sportsman track champion Mark Mortensen who started the event in the fifth position. Mortensen would start passing cars in that treacherous outside groove on lap three as he got by Justin Auspelmyer for the third spot and one lap later took the second position from Ray Zemken. On lap seven Mortensen was the new second place car after getting by Schaffer for the spot with Pessolano now a half straightaway ahead. Lap after lap Mortensen drew in on the leader and at the halfway point in the event the two were nose to tail. Pessolano was a little bit quicker coming out of the turns so every time it looked as though Mortensen had a run on the

leader coming into turns one and two, Pessolano would pull away slightly exiting turn two down the backstretch. At the halfway point in the event Pessolano was the leader followed by Mortensen, Schaffer, Zemken, and Auspelmyer with the top two a straightway ahead of the third place car making it a two car battle for the win in a caution free event. With three laps to go and two lap cars in front of the leader, Pessolano had to make a choice on which groove to race in to get by the lap cars in turns one and two and choose the outside where he had been running the entire race. Mortensen switched grooves to the inside and got by the two lap cars along with Pessolano to take the lead coming out of turn two. Mortensen went on to his first win of the season in the Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive-In #1M Teo car which was the 13th of his career in the division at the “Track of Champions”. The win also put him on top of
the all-time win list in the class. Pessolano, Schaffer, Zemken, and Auspelmyer completed the top five in the event. “We thought that the track would be wet but had to put the slick track setup back in it for tonight,” Mortensen said in victory lane. “With the lap cars on top I couldn’t run up there like I had been during the entire feature but I was able to get to the bottom to get by them and was fortunate enough to get by the leader too.” Much of the credit for that win goes to not only Mark for his fantastic drive to the checkered flag but also to his crew consisting of Bob (Mark’s father) & Brett (Mark’s brother and crew chief of the #1M) Mortensen, and Erik Nelson who put a setup in the car that Mark could use on the outside of the track where nobody else could pass which led him to the feature win. MARK WEAR UPDATE! A new order for a new design #1M shirt and sweatshirt will be going in soon so if anyone is interested in the new design “Mark Wear” please call Mark’s mother and car owner Bonnie Mortensen at 518-221-5429!

One easy solution is to call a local company like us (Scrapster) to take away your unwanted junk, furniture, household garbage and yard waste. Plus we can remove any scrap metal and broken or outdated appliances at no charge. There are a lot of choices out there: we recommend you work with someone who is insured and that can be found in the phone book or that has a website. A major advantage in using Scrapster is that we always separate out the scrap metal when we are on a clean out job, which can help reduce costs significantly. We break down and recycle EVERYTHING possible, from the motor out of a washing machine to the electrical cord off of a desk lamp. So many things fall under the umbrella of scrap metal that people don’t usually associate with “scrap”, such as car batteries, wire and extension cords, bicycles, pots and pans, tools (even if they have wooden handles) and smaller appliances like hair dryers and toaster. Plus one of our main focuses: properly handling of household electronics such as computers, DVD players and more. People always ask us things like “So how do you make any money picking up appliances for free?” or “You’ve probably seen bigger messes than my garage, right”? There are no secrets here: we try to be as efficient as possible when scheduling pick up loops to include as many stops as possible within the same area. This is how we can take that old microwave for Mrs. Griffin on one stop and then fill half the truck with the items from the Simpsons basement next. As for that messy garage: been there, done that, and the best part is that they always look dramatically better in the end. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. Please call us today at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website at www.scrapster.com. Vincent Coppola, Owner of Scrapster Scrap Metal Removal/Recycling Service
