When is It Critical to Review Your Estate Plan? Just like other important life tasks, your estate plan deserves your time and attention The occurrence of special life events may mean it is time to pick up the phone and call us. Marriage: Have you recently gotten married? Congratulations! Marriage means new ways of sharing and managing finances and assets. As a result, this is an important time to revisit your estate plan. With this life change, you’ll need to contact us to make any changes to your beneficiary designations, update your will/trust, and update your powers of attorney. This is especially important if this is a second marriage and/or there are children from a previous relationship involved. Retirement: Welcome to your golden years! Retirement brings lifestyle changes, more time for loved ones, and important financial developments. You may find yourself traveling more, making documents such as a Financial Power of Attorney and Health Care Power of Attorney more crucial. This is also a good time to start thinking about asset protection strategies. Moved: If you have moved across state lines, you’ll need to make sure that your estate planning documents are still applicable in your new state. Also, it is important that your home is titled appropriately to carry out your overall estate plan.
Divorce: Make any needed updates to the beneficiaries on your estate plan and ensure your beneficiary designations on any life insurance or retirement accounts are changed so that your ex-spouse does not end up with those assets upon your passing. Death: Take some time, but don’t forget that your estate plan will need to be updated to reflect the change that has taken place. You may need to remove the deceased person as a beneficiary from any will, trust, life insurance policy, or retirement account and determine what will now happen to that share. Also, if your deceased loved one was appointed as a fiduciary, make the necessary adjustments to your documents. Received Inheritance: An inheritance can mean property, money, real estate, and more. An increase in assets may necessitate a change in your estate planning strategy. Depending on the asset you’ve inherited, there may be additional asset management or protection concerns that will need to be addressed. Birth or Adoption: This is a great time to plan to provide for your new family member’s future. It is important to consider how you would like to provide for the child and who is going to be in charge of handling the assets while he or she is a minor. We’d Be Honored to Help: Whatever life brings you we are here to help you weather the storms and celebrate the milestones. Remember—prevention is the best cure. Proper estate planning is the only way to ensure that you are protecting your loved ones the way you want. Give us a call today! Law Office of Kathleen M. Back to School Smiles Welcome to the chaos that is “Back to School Season.” In the excitement of shopping for classroom supplies, trying to coordinate schedules, and making sure everyone likes their outfit for the first day, it is so easy for something as routine as dental care to slip through the cracks. Here are some helpful tips on how to keep your kids’ teeth healthy throughout the school year. Mornings can get crazy. Somehow, one of the kids’ shoes went rogue or they make it to the car before remembering their lunchbox. Who has two full minutes to brush their teeth in the midst of this insanity? We all do! Having a routine helps keeps things organized and minimizes stress when trying to get everyone out the door. Incorporating two minutes dental hygiene into this is easy; many toothbrushes now come with a built-in timer to help keep you honest. Most smartphones already have a timer function or, if you prefer, there are inexpensive kitchen timers that serve the same purpose. Even
a little hourglass from a board game works. Figure out the best way to work these two minutes into your schedule. Stay organized, be consistent, then no shoes or bookbags get lost and no teeth remain unbrushed! It can be a challenge to eat healthy even as an adult, but for kids it can be even harder. Most pre-packaged snacks are highly processed and loaded with sugar. When packing lunches, try to avoid sweet, sticky treats that tend to hang around and cause dental decay. Most folks know candy and cookies are not the best choices for teeth, but other “healthy” snacks are less obvious causes of cavities. Dried fruit snacks, trail mix bars, and common carbohydrates (think pretzels, crackers, chips) also cling to teeth and can be loaded with natural or added sugars. If you eat these things, try to remove the leftover bits before they stick around too long and start to cause problems. Consider packing a toothbrush and toothpaste for school. Also, sugary drinks like soda, juices, sports drinks, and energy drinks are common causes of cavities. Water is always the best option. It is best to make other drinks an occasional treat. If your kids play sports it is important to protect their teeth from harm. Any injuries to teeth or the mouth should be evaluated by a dentist ASAP in case treatment is needed. We encourage all young athletes to wear mouthguards. Many options are available over the counter that work great; there are also inexpensive professionally made options available. Dental checkups twice a year are also an important part of keeping teeth healthy. The easiest way to get healthy is to stay healthy. Preventative measures such as cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants can stop cavities before they start, making it easy for your kids to love going to the dentist. We know it can be tough to fit in a dental visit into a busy schedule, so we have tried to make it easier by having evening and Saturday hours. You don’t have to take time away from work and they don’t have to miss school. We treat adults as well as children and want to help with all your dental needs. From our family to your family we hope everyone has a great start to the new school year!

Back to School Health and Wellness Well, everyone’s favorite time of the year is upon us... back to school and back to work! It doesn’t have to be a negative thing; September is the perfect time for new beginnings. Why not make it time to finally take care of the person you have been neglecting all summer long? Yourself! Not many of us leave time for self-care, but it is oh-so-important. How will you take care of the kiddos if you are not at your best? Chiropractic can help relieve the stresses of the new school year and keep you and your kids functioning at your best. Chiropractic adjustments put your body in a state of ease and allow your body to heal itself. Adjustments reduce nerve interference which in turn causes: normal function of your body, greater mobility, less disease, less sickness, less pain, greater performance, increased productivity, better focus, more vitality, and decreased medication use. By removing interference in the nervous system, spinal adjustments can help improve immune system function. Studies show chiropractic adjustments increase immune cells in one’s body which, in turn, improves the ability of ill people to fight disease. This is exactly why it is important for kids to get adjusted and boost those immune systems, especially at the beginning of the school year. It’s true--chiropractic isn’t just for headaches, neck pain and back pain! The most common results parents report after their child starts getting chiropractic care: 1.) Age appropriate milestones met 2.) Breastfeeding and colic issues resolve 3.) Decrease in number & severity of ear infections 4.) Able to adapt to new situations better 5.) Don’t get sick as often 6.) Pooping regularly without pain or having to take an aid to help 7.) Better attention span in school 8.) Better posture & spinal alignment 9.) Better sleep 10.) Decreased allergies, asthma, bedwetting, oversensitivity, hyperactivity, & agitation With back to school around the corner, children (and adults) need to be cognizant of their head posture while they are using a tablet, computer or even a textbook. Make sure that your tablet or textbook is in front of your face and that your head doesn’t tilt over your shoulders. More and more children are visiting the chiropractor because they are having postural issues with their upper back and neck, as well as headaches. As a general rule, you should not do anything in a certain posture for more than 50 minutes. After this time period, take a ten minute break.
yourhometowne@gmail.com
When you are sitting at your desk at school, keep your feet flat on the floor, shoulders back and your head back over the top of your neck and shoulders. Some kids tend to slouch and start sliding underneath the desk, but they really should keep their back against the back of the chair. Make sure your head is on top of your shoulders and not leaning too far forward. This will help with spinal health. Wearing your backpack properly is also important for spinal health. Wearing it on just one shoulder, can cause misalignments in your spine and lead to back pain. There are two straps for a reason. Make sure that they fit snugly over your shoulders and that it doesn’t droop below your belt line. It’s called a backpack for a reason, not a butt-pack! Backpack weight is one of the most common questions that chiropractors receive. Your backpack can weigh between 10 to 20 percent of your total body weight (no more than that), so it does differ from child to child. Because smaller children don’t have as much muscle mass, no more than 15 percent of their total body weight is recommended. Most importantly, come visit us at Thrive Chiropractic and get checked for any spinal misalignments. Give us a call today and feel free to bring in your child’s backpack for a spinal screening! Dr. Amy is accepting new patients. Please call, text or email to reserve your spot! (518) 399-3810 or chiropractor@thriveglenville.com 353 Saratoga Rd. Welcome to a Brand New School Year At the Y we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life. Because of the Y community and our partnerships with the schools, children are taking more interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children learn their ABC’s, learn to share, learn about sportsmanship, and most importantly, learn how to be themselves. That makes for confident children today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Have you ever asked your child, ‘How was your day?’ and they respond with, ‘Good.’ You try to get more out of them by asking, ‘What did you do?’ and they answer, ‘nothing’. Well there may be a way around that! We’ve compiled a quick list of questions to ask your child that will get them talking about school! “Tell me the best part of your day.” This will give your kids a starting point. It’s not a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. They will have to think through their day and decide which their favorite is! “Can you show me something you learned or did at school today?” This will not only get you a response, but it will give you an activity to do together! Plus, it’s great to go through everything while it’s still fresh in their minds. “What rules are different at school than they are at home?” This is a great conversation starter. Maybe there is a school rule that they love to follow, or really respect. You can even try to integrate it into your home life! “Who do you sit with at lunch?” Before they even realize it, they will be telling you all about their new friends.

“What’s the biggest difference between school this year and last year?” The school year experience can change with age. It’s great to see how school is growing with your child. “What is your biggest goal this school year?” Maybe it’s to meet to friends or try something new. Talk to your child’s teacher and ask how they can help your child reach their goals! “What did you read today?” Reading is a great tool to keep education going and strike up a conversation. “Did anyone do anything funny today?” This is a great opportunity to laugh with your child and share a similar story. “Who did you play with today? What did you play?” This can tell you a lot about your child’s school day experience. Who they’re hanging out with and what activities they’re participating in can tell you a lot about your child’s personality. Maybe they’re spending a lot of time with a new friend. “Tell me about the hardest part of your day.” If your child is having a problem at school, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the situation. Always be available to talk!

Prepare for Cooler Temperatures
Harvest Time
from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services
Now that it’s September, we’re officially moving into the FALL season, even if the temperatures don’t yet reflect that. This is a great time to get your house ready for those cooler days and nights to come. Following are a few tips. Your home is your largest investment. Here are some ways to get it ready for the cooler temperatures. FURNACES Call a heating and cooling professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. Change your furnace filter every month it is in use. Install a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one. Keep the area around your furnace clear. FIREPLACES Have your chimney professionally cleaned if it hasn’t been for a while. Now is the time to chop or purchase firewood, and order propane if you use it. Store firewood at least 30 feet from your house. WINDOWS AND DOORS Use weather stripping around doors and caulk around windows to prevent cold air from coming in. Replace cracked glass in windows or doors. ROOF, GUTTERS and DOWNSPOUTS Clean out gutters to clear away debris. Consider installing leaf guards or gutter helmets to keep debris out, and put extensions on your downspouts to direct water away from your home. Replace any worn roof shingles or tiles. Check flashing to make sure that no water can enter your home. EQUIPMENT Drain gas from your lawnmower. Service or get a tune-up for your snow blower. Clear and store warm weather gardening equipment. FOUNDATION Rake away debris and vegetation from the foundation, and seal up gaps and cracks. SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS Test your detectors to make sure they work. Replace fire extinguishers that are older than 10 years. Replace the batteries when you change the clocks - it’s a great way to remember to do it every year. Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and/or water heater, and on each floor of your home. PLUMBING Know where your water main is in case of emergency! Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. Drain air conditioner pipes and turn off the water shut-off valve if there is one. LANDSCAPING AND OUTDOORS Trim tree branches that hang too close to the house. Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. Enjoy the crispness of the Fall season, and with your house in good shape, the cooler temperatures will be a breeze! Sitting here at my desk I’m welcoming fall and pondering my summer accomplishments; I would say my 11’ cucumber plant tops the list! It’s a showstopper and a great conversation starter. Never in a million years did I expect my little seeds would provide massive “English” cukes. The produce is nonstop. I got to feed my neighbors, make fabulous salads, and pickles. Yum. All my hard work paid off. When I opened my studio, it was a little seedling. I pounded the pavement and introduced myself to all the awesome business owners of BS. It’s a friendly town with down home charm. Word got out and several of the Spa’s in the area tried recruiting me for my Permanent Makeup and Aesthetic skills. I didn’t feel a connection and up until now I dug in my heals and said no. Today however that has all changed. I’m joining forces with Hair Razors of upper Union. Hair Razors has so many clients wanting eyebrows and facials, I couldn’t say no. Razor’s met all my requirements and then some. I’m looking forward to seeing you at my new exciting location. Gift certificates can be redeemed at this location. I would like to thank Gary Bordeau for providing a lovely space for “Browz By Barbara” and all my loyal clients (without you…,) and to Cheryll Hill. Cheryll provided me the opportunity to tell my story, tap into my creative self and more important a friendship that I cherish. Going forward I will be offering facials, peels, sun damage treatments, anti-aging, waxing (face and body,) Bridal and special occasion makeup, scar coverage, Permanent makeup, micro-blading for brows and scalp. See you soon. Mention this article and receive a free brow wax with a facial! “Place Your Face in My Hands”

Mortensen Motorsports Finishes Off the Regular Season Strong at Fonda
The 2019 regular season at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway came to a close on Saturday, August 10 as the Montgomery County Fairgrounds closes a couple of weeks early to prepare the fairgrounds for the annual Fonda Fair. On Saturday, August 3 the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M of Mark Mortensen started the 25-lap Crate 602 Sportsman feature in the 19th position after problems in his qualifying heat race put him out of a handicapping starting position. With 10-laps to go in the feature event Mark made his way up to the 12th position and all the way up to the seventh position on a restart after a caution one lap later. During the closing laps of the event, Mark continued to move up more positions and at the checkered flag, he ended up with a fine fifth place finish. It was the third time during the 2019-racing season at Fonda that Mark had won the Greco’s NAPA Hard Charger Award for moving up the most positions of any driver in the feature event! Then on Saturday, August 10 which was “Championship Night” at Fonda, Benjamin Moore Paints sponsored the evenings racing program with Mark putting his racecar on display over by the covered grandstand as the #1M is sponsored by Benjamin Moore Paints. Mark started the 25-lap feature event in the 13th position on that evening and ended up finishing the event with a hard fought seventh place finish. With the seventh place finish Mark ended up fifth in the final point standings for the 2019 racing season with a couple of non-

point races yet to be run in the month of September. Mark’s brother Brett Mortensen, who races in the Limited Sportsman division at Fonda closed out his rookie season with a fifth place finish in the feature on August 3 after starting 10th and on Saturday, August 10 had an unfortunate incident during the feature event and finished in the ninth position. Brett finished his rookie season at Fonda with a fine third place finish in the final 2019-point standings at the “Track of Champions”. This month’s sponsorship spotlight on Mark’s #1M racecar will be Countryside Stove & Chimney located on Rt. 50 in Burnt Hills, NY. They have been on the racecar since Mark started racing stock cars back in 2003. They are a local dealer for pellet, wood, and propane stoves along with outdoor patio furniture and outdoor fireplaces. Please go visit them for all your needs and mention us! Sponsorship spotlight on Brett’s #1B racecar is Simmons Machine Tool Corporation, which manufactures reliable and innovative machine tools, measuring machines, and automation systems for railway wheel set maintenance and production according to their website. Founded in 1910 and based in Albany, New York, USA, Simmons is part of the NSH Group (Niles-Simmons-Hegenscheidt), an international leader in machine tool technology. Special thanks goes out to all of the other sponsors and supporters of both Mark’s #1M racecar and Brett’s #1B racecar as well.

Weed & Feed You might not realize it but September is the best time to get the weeds growing in your lawn under control. Late summer weed control is the “proactive” approach to weed control. Most of us take the “reactive” approach of killing dandelions and other lawn weeds in the spring when we see them flowering. After we wipe that initial round of flowering weeds out, we’ll have a lovely lawn all summer. Unfortunately the seeds of dandelions from other, untreated areas around our yards or a neighbor’s yard are blowing in all summer and sprouting in our lawn. These little seedlings of the perennial weeds are small and go unnoticed. They’ll survive the winter and burst into flower with the first warm days the following spring. A more effective approach is to treat the lawn in September a “weed & feed” type lawn food with granular weed killer added or with a liquid spray weed killer. You’ll want to apply granular “weed & feed” when the lawn is moist (like in the morning when there is dew on the lawn) so the weed killer dissolves on the leaves of the weeds where it is absorbed into the weed. If the lawn is very dry, make sure to water it heavily the day before you apply your weed killer since weed killer applied to a very dry lawn may actually damage the grass or kill it along with the weeds. The longer this dissolved weed killer remains in contact with the leaves of the weeds, the better it will work. If the weed killer is washed off the leaves before 24 hours have passed, it won’t be very effective killing the weeds.
The most effective weed killers are liquid sprays. Liquid weed killers are sprayed onto the leaves of the weeds in the lawn. Since the weed killer is absorbed by the leaves of the weeds the same “no water for 24 hours after application” rule applies with them as well. Like granular “weed & feed” liquid weed killer should NOT be applied to a very dry lawn. Recently a new, organic liquid weed killer has become available. It is called “Fe Weed Killer” Fe stands for Iron if you remember your periodic table. The iron in Fe weed killer is absorbed quickly through the leaves of the weeds. So quickly in fact that it is toxic to the weed and kills it. The grass around the weed doesn’t absorb the iron so quickly so it isn’t killed. It does absorb some Iron so it may turn a darker green for a week or so after application but that’s it. Fe weed killer may take a little longer to work than the chemical weed killer but is proving to be more effective against tougher to kill lawn weeds like clover and Creeping Charlie. Having an organic lawn weed killer is great news for us, our pets and the wildlife that visit your yard. By killing the young weed seedlings that are growing in your lawn now you’ll find that you won’t have to take the “reactive” measure of trying to fit weed killing into a busy spring gardening schedule. You’ll also wipe out a higher percentage of the weeds if you treat in late summer since they’re smaller and it takes less weed killer to kill small weeds than mature weeds. Thanks for the read. what’s Recipes with wiggle room
Apple Cider Chicken Apple Cider Chicken. Juicy chicken cooked with fresh apple cider, caramelized apples, and rosemary. An easy, healthy dinner that cooks in just ONE PAN! • 4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil — divided • 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs — (about 8, depending on size) • 1 teaspoon kosher salt — divided • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper — divided • 1/2 cup fresh apple cider • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard • 3 medium firm — sweet apples, cored and cut into 1/2-inch slices (I used Gala) • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary plus additional for serving 1. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a large skillet over medium high. Sprinkle the top of the chicken evenly with 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, add the chicken to the pan, top-side down. Let cook 4 minutes, then flip and continue cooking until the meat is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees, 3 to 4 additional minutes. Remove to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. 2. In a small bowl or large measuring cup, stir together the apple cider and mustard. With a paper towel, carefully wipe the skillet clean. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons of oil to the pan over medium high. Once the oil is hot, add the apple slices, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and rosemary. Cook for 5 minutes, until the apples are lightly tender and begin to turn golden. Return the chicken to the pan and pour the cider mixture over the top. Let cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until the liquid is reduced by half. Serve warm, sprinkled with additional Wiggle Room: Add some maple syrup and/or a touch of cayenne for a kick!

Warm Eggplant & Mint Salad • 1 large eggplant, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 1 pound) • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste • 1/2 lemon, juiced (about 1 tablespoon) • 1 pinch sugar • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste • 2 tablespoons fresh mint, roughly chopped 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss the eggplant cubes, 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, and salt directly on a quarter sheet pan and roast for 30 minutes, or until caramelized and tender. Turn off the oven. 2. Season the cooked eggplant with the lemon juice, sugar, black pepper, the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and a pinch more salt if you feel it needs it, and toss together (I like to do this straight in the sheet pan). Place back in the turned-off oven for 5 more minutes. 3. Finish with the fresh mint and serve at room temperature.
