A message from The theme this month is about “returning home”. On our cover is a male Indigo Bunting; this little bird, nicknamed the 'Blue Canary” sings with cheerful gusto through late spring and early summer throughout North America. It often migrates by night, using the stars to navigate. Its habitat is farmland, brush areas, and open woodland. Like all other blue birds, Indigo Buntings lack blue pigment. Their jewel-like color comes instead from microscopic structures in the feathers that refract and reflect blue light, much like the airborne particles that cause the sky to look blue. Another favorite in our area is the Hummingbird; Ruby-throated Hummingbirds arrived along the gulf coast at the end of February. Our hummingbirds will return in early May, but you can put out a feeder in late April that might help early returnees or those birds migrating further north. If you do, you still have to change the nectar regularly (every 4-6 days) even if no hummingbird visits it. You can find all your birding needs at Country Acres on Rt 50. The largest migratory bird in upstate New York is known as The Snowbird. This clever bird travels in a number of ways. They can be spotted regularly in large RV's along the I-95 corridor or in beautiful boats slowly traveling up through the inter-coastal waterways from Florida to our region and beyond. Many of them expect to be fed and watered upon arrival so be sure your refrigerator is stocked with New York delicacies such as grain fed beef and beer. During their stay in Florida they have been deprived of real pizza, maple syrup and Greek Diners. Be prepared to indulge your snowbird visitor with some outings to our locally owned eateries. Be warned, they have been known to seek shelter in their friends and relatives homes so be sure you have a fresh set of sheets in the guest room! Don't forget May 12th is Mother's Day. This issue is filled with ideas and places to bring your Mom to celebrate her special day. If a backyard picnic is her style it is also National Barbeque month, so be sure to load up at Garofalo's with the best in fresh hand cut selections and celebrate it right! That said and in the spirit of fair play and equal time it is also National Salad Month, so eat healthy my friend, I'm not making this up. While you are enjoying the much deserved warm weather remember to watch for motorcycles, keep your swimming pool gate locked, teach your children to swim and practice safe fun! Love your family and remember Real Family does not come from your blood. It is the people standing beside you when no one else is.

BOB BOICE, A HOMETOWNE LEGACY

Bob Boice born July 8th 1933 --- died March 21st 2013 is remembered as a patient easy going farmer with a love for his community. He grew up on Goode St and spent the next 77 years farming the land and raising his family. Bob married his lifelong love, Joyce B. MimMack, almost 60 years ago on October 4, 1953. They carved their life out milking cows, growing apples, peaches, plums, cherries and babies all while they rebuilt the beautiful saltbox colonial that had stood on the land since 1780. During his “free time” (farmers don't have free time) Bob was a volunteer firefighter for the BH-BL Fire Department. He served as a Burnt Hills volunteer fireman for 58 years, acting as Lieutenant, Assistant Chief (15 years), Chief (three years) and Commissioner (10 years). Ironically the last call he made as Chief was to his own home in 1975. The home they spent so many years raising their family in burned to the ground that spring. With the help and generosity of good neighbors and friends the Boice family was back in their home before the winter of 1975. Bob drove bus for 20 years for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake schools, devoting a great deal of time transporting athletes to events. Bob also dedicated 16 years to the Town of Ballston as councilman and played an important role in the construction of the highway garage, Community Library and Town Hall. Bob was truly dedicated to the Town of Ballston and the Burnt Hills community. He left a behind wonderful legacy of purpose by serving his community and love of his family. Bob left the world a better place than it was when he entered it. Not by accident but because of his dedication and commitment to his neighbors, family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Joyce and siblings, William Boice (Ellen) and Edith Older. Bob had five children, Shirley Kane of Ithaca, NY, Debra Hodgson (Robert) Ballston Spa, Bonny Boice (Gary Bojarski) Lake Pleasant, NY, Robert C. Boice Jr. (Sharron) of Morrisonville, NY, and Kathleen Boice DeSocio (Chris) Genoa, NV. Bob was Pa to his seven grandchildren, Dennis Hodgson (Stephanie), Saratoga, Nathan Hodgson (Kate), Middlegrove, Lauren Seward, Scotia, Derek Seward, Rochester, NY, Bobbi Boice III, Burlingame, CA, and Tyler and MaKenzie Boice of Morrisonville. Bob enjoyed watching his two great-granddaughters, Molly and Tess Hodgson. He was Uncle Bob to more than 50 nieces and nephews across the country. We thank him and his family for their commitment to making Your Hometowne a better place to live in.

CHOOSE YOUR HARD I know why you've been reluctant to jump on the fitness bandwagon, and I'm not blaming you for it. Fitness is hard! Want to know just how hard? Here's a glimpse into the Fit Life: FIT LIFE TRUTH #1: EXERCISE COUNTS Lace up your shoes and hit the gym instead of getting extra sleep, watching TV or doing whatever else it is that you'd rather be doing. FIT LIFE TRUTH #2: NUTRITION COUNTS Choose your meals based on the nutritional makeup, limit your intake of simple carbohydrates and get lots of protein and fiber in each meal. FIT LIFE TRUTH #3: NO ROOM FOR JUNK Turn down your favorite junk foods - even when you really, really want it. Cut simple sugars and harmful, processed fats out of your diet completely. FIT LIFE TRUTH #4: PUSH HARDER Push your body to be stronger, faster and better during each workout. Don't simply go through the motions in your routine. FIT LIFE TRUTH #5: CALORIES COUNT Limit your total calories to within an appropriate range for your size and goals. Remember, even healthy calories can add up to weight gain when you're not careful. Now let's take a look at with the NOT-Fit life looks like... NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #1: BE SEDENTARY Spend your spare time being as sedentary as possible. The less that you use your muscles, the more aches, pains and mobility limitations you'll experience. NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #2: EAT FOR TASTE Eat whatever sounds and tastes good. The human palate is naturally drawn to items that are high in sugar, salt and fat. You'll find your weight increases, and your energy levels plummet. NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #3: JUST SAY YES To your favorite junk food, that is. Your indulgent eating is going to raise the number on your scale higher. NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #4: GET COMFORTABLE Your goal is to be comfy. This means use as little muscular strength as you can on a daily basis, leaving you with less lean tissue. Since lean tissue raises your metabolism, a drop in lean tissue means you'll be burning fewer calories at rest than ever before. NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #5: MORE IS BETTER There's no limit on how much you eat - in fact more is better. As a result you often feel sluggish from your overloaded digestive system. And your motivation to exercise and turn your NOT-Fit Life into a Fit Life gets dimmer and dimmer. So which life is harder? The Fit Life? Or the NOT-Fit Life? The truth is that both of these lifestyles are hard. Just depends on which hard you'd rather deal with. If you'd like the Fit Life then take action now by calling or emailing me today to get started on a fitness program that's going to be hard. 424-7878 or email gina@precisefitnessandtraining.com to get started today with a free consultation.

BENEFICIARIES FOR LIFE INSURANCE Many of us own life insurance policies. Purchasing an insurance policy is important for the needs of a spouse and children. Your plan is to make sure those funds are set aside to help a spouse or provide for the education of your children. What do you do if a child is too young to receive the insurance funds? Sometimes, people will substitute a parent or sibling as an alternate beneficiary. These persons, however, may end up having health problems, divorce and/or bankruptcy. All of a sudden, creditors of the alternate beneficiary may end up with the insurance funds. A planning option is to create a Will with a Trust for Minor children in the Will. If you pick someone to be a guardian for the children in a Will, then the guardian will only manage the funds until the children are 18. You can set an older age for final distribution to a child. Trusts can also be established if a child has disabilities. A properly funded trust also will be protected from your own creditors. The alternate beneficiary should be the Trustee of the Trust, and not the Estate, on the beneficiary form. Life insurance is an important part of your financial plans. You should consult an attorney about your situation. Please contact me to consult on planning for yourself or someone in need. It will be my pleasure to help.

WRENCH TALK with Ken Maynard Coding, what does it mean? This month Ken shares a crossover story about coding, a term that is not exclusive to vehicles. In today's world of technology basically anything that “runs” has a computer in the background keeping everything right and it was a broken refrigerator that provided this month's tip. It seems that Ken's refrigerator stopped being a refrigerator and became a closet for food without holding a temperature that most food requires unless you're a fan of mold and spoiled milk. Enter the repairman, set up by a big Store as part of the pre-paid “warrantee”. Now mind you the guy who showed up had no clue that his “client” aka Ken Maynard is a pretty savvy repair guy himself and would be paying close attention to his visit. After unplugging the refrigerator and fumbling around with a flashlight coupled with a call to home base- the “expert” repairman declared that the compressor was shot and needed to be replaced (I'm hoping that those who know Ken can visualize where this is going). Needless to say after a very brief explanation as to why he #1 Never looked at anything #2 He admitted that he no clue on how to check out the unit, that he was “new” to the repair business, like Ken say's a “Greenhorn”, He was escorted to the door and asked to not come back. After calling a seasoned repairman who actually took off a panel and found a fan that was stuck, he freed it up and informed Ken

that the first guy made one of the worst mistakes that could be made; he unplugged the refrigerator thereby clearing the code that could be read by a reader if all else failed. The moral of this story is this, unlike a refrigerator that will clear the codes by simply unplugging it, shutting your vehicle off does not clear the code and it seems a lot of people know that there are a few places around who offer a “free” use of a scanner to check out the code and opportunity to clear it and sell you parts to fix it, assuming you understand the sequence of codes and which ones lead to the other. Ken suggests that if a check engine light comes on and your not a mechanic with training in diagnostics, don't run to whoever offers use of the OBD II (on board diagnostics) Scanner to see the code and then clear it, by doing so you have wiped out the opportunity to locate your problem and will require time running your vehicle to cycle the system in order for the problem to present itself back into the computer. And the bigger point is to remember is that a check engine light doesn't always mean a big problem or an expensive repair is needed. However, driving a car with the check engine light on could mean that you are doing further damage to the engine, depending on the problem. It's always best to get the vehicle checked at your earliest convenience and by a reputable mechanic with the skills and tools to do it right, so if your check engine light comes on, don't be a hero and try to fix what you don't understand, stop by KENS SUNOCO and let his team under the hood to fix it right the first time.

INVESTORS CAN LEARN FROM EARTH DAY'S LESSONS On April 18th, we observed Earth Day. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day has grown into an international movement whose goal is to raise awareness of the need to take action to sustain a healthy, sustainable environment. You can do your part through recycling and other measures, but you can also apply some of the lessons of Earth Day to your financial situation and, in particular, to your approach to investing. Make the most of your existing resources. One of the most valuable lessons of Earth Day deals with the need to be responsible managers of the resources we have. As an investor, it's important to maximize the benefits of the resources to which you have access. For example, are you contributing as much as you can afford to your 401(k)? At the very least, you should put in enough to earn your employer's match, if one is offered. Take advantage of a favorable environment. Underlying all Earth Day activities is the goal of creating a healthy environment in which to live. You may also benefit from a positive investment environment - and that's what we appear to be experiencing, at least in terms of low interest rates, low inflation and favorable equity valuations. So in this atmosphere, look for those investment opportunities that are appropriate for your situation. Don't over-consume. Excess consumption has played a big role in causing some of the environmental issues we face. Consequently, many Earth Day programs teach us to get by with less, or at least to avoid acquiring more than we need. To translate this philosophy into your investment habits, take a close look at the number of trades you make. Are you constantly selling old investments and buying new ones in the hopes of capturing higher returns? This type of trading can result in significant fees, costs and taxes. Moreover, this constant activity, with all its starts and stops, may detract from your ability to follow a consistent investment strategy. Avoid “toxic” investment moves. The motivation to create Earth Day developed, in part, by the growing awareness that industrial toxins were affecting our air and water. And you can find many toxic investment moves, too. To illustrate: Many people chase after “hot” stocks after hearing about them from friends or relatives, or seeing them touted by so-called experts in the media. But by the time these people acquire the hot stocks, the stocks may already have cooled off. Furthermore, these stocks may not have been appropriate for these investors in the first place. Another potentially “toxic” investment move is to try to time the market - that is, try to buy investments when prices are low and sell when they're high. In theory, this is a good way to invest; in practice, it's almost impossible to predict market highs and lows Instead, consider buying quality investments and holding them for the long term, or at least until your needs change. By following these Earth Day-related suggestions, you can help yourself make progress toward a healthier - and possibly more productive - investment environment. And that's worth celebrating more than once a year. Christopher Nyhan runs the Edward Jones office in Burnt Hills, NY. KEEP IT LOCAL! Remember the days when most of your shopping was done at local stores owned by people in the community? Remember when downtown was the center of activity because of the local stores? Remember when running errands meant staying in your own community or area, seeing friends and neighbors and having a chance to “catch-up”? Maybe life is still this way for you. For many people, however, shopping and running errands means frequenting large retail chains, in distant retail centers, in the company of strangers from many different communities. Shopping is not quite so local and neighborly anymore. But this is beginning to change. “Buy local” is the new slogan, and it's growing fast. And now more than ever before, you can benefit from doing it. We are happy to see that you are recognizing the value of our local businesses and the contribution they make to our communities. Today, more than ever before, local business owners are seeing the value in their own communities and rewarding those consumers who participate in keeping it local by offering them special “Local” offers and exclusive “Buy Local” deals. A growing number of businesses have joined groups like Local Living In (LLI), the SBA or Downtown Business Association (DBA) to promote the member deals and display the organization decals near doors and registers to bring awareness to their efforts. Look for them as you enter, or ask the business owner if they offer any kind of Buy Local discount. But it's not just about the discount. In past years many of our downtowns have become lifeless and vacant as local businesses have been replaced by large retail development in outlying areas. What we need to keep in mind, locally owned businesses are crucial to revitalizing our downtowns. Lively downtowns filled with an array of goods and services make in-town living appealing, helping to counter sprawl. Downtown businesses also tend to be clustered together, increasing citizen interaction and contributing to a vital downtown feeling. We can already see how many local government officials are helping by working with business leaders to make the “downtown” experience more appealing. Enhancements to infrastructure, advertisements and overall curb appeal by making storefronts more vibrant and inviting. It's more than just building strong communities -- There's much to be said for the civic value of doing business with our neighbors-people who greet us by name, send their kids to school with ours, and have a vested interest in the long-term well-being of the community. Local merchants often sponsor cultural events and take a leadership role in community organizations. If you look around your town, it's clear they contribute significant time and money to local causes. Just note the names on the Baseball Jersey, or that banner hanging in the outfield. These businesses care about OUR Communities. Simply said, “Keep It Local” -- Local business owners need YOU to help them, thereby helping yourself get back to that “Downtown” lifestyle we all remember. Juergen Klingenberg, Owner and Founder of Local Living In A merchant driven consumer reward program!

MORTENSEN MOTORSPORTS UPDATE FOR APRIL On Saturday April 6, 2013 the Your Hometowne sponsored Mortensen Motorsports Racing Team and their driver Mark Mortensen started the 2013 racing season with a strong showing in the 602 Sportsman feature at their home track, the Track of Champions, Fonda Speedway with a brand new 2013 Teo car and a new crate motor in the car for the start of the 2013 racing season. Mark finished his qualifying heat race in the second position and also set the fastest time in the heat race event with a lap of 20.903 sec. placing him in the fifth starting position for the 20-lap feature event. When the checkered flag flew Mark finished second in the event and also set the quickest lap in the feature event with a time of 22.260 secs. After a rain out on Saturday, April 13 the Mortensen Motorsports #1M was back in action at Fonda on Saturday, April 20 and it turned out to be a very exciting evening for the Your Hometowne sponsored race car. A special thanks as well goes out to our newest sponsor on the #1M, Ben Iwinski from Iwinski Excavating! Past champions in the 602 Sportsman division John Scarborough and Mark Mortensen started the 20-lap feature event on the front row with Scarborough leading early. When Scarborough switched lanes to the outside going into turn one, Mortensen switched lanes as well, taking the low line to take overthe lead. By lap five Mortensen and Scarborough were a straightaway ahead of third place runner Tim Hartman Jr. with the first of five cautions out at that point to close up the field. Three consecutive restarts were necessary to get the race going again as each time the green flag flew to start the race the yellow would be back out again for another wreck. When the race was finally restarted Scarborough was the new race leader as Ricky Quick was the new third place car after getting by Hartman with Floyd Billington also getting by Hartman for the fourth position.

The final caution of the event was out on lap six for a pileup in turn two and a single file restart was ordered by race director Marty Beberwyk. Once the race was restarted Scarborough was able to put some distance between himself and Mortensen and by lap nine he held a half straightaway advantage. Scarborough and Mortensen were switching lanes lap after lap to try to find the fast way around the track with Scarborough trying to maintain the lead while Mortensen was trying to figure out how to reel him in. By lap 14 that is exactly what Mortensen did as he caught Scarborough as they went into turn one and going into turn two Mortensen was able to get under Scarborough to take the lead. Once he got the lead, Mortensen was able to pull away with the only thing slowing him down being lap cars which he had to negotiate around for the final four laps. Mortensen was able to go on for the win, the eighth of his career in the division over Scarborough, Quick, Billington, and Ray Zemken. With his 28th birthday just a day prior to his win, the victory was a good way for Mortensen to celebrate with Fonda Speedway announcer Josh Phillips making the call to the finish line saying "get out the cake and light up the candles Happy Birthday Mark Mortensen." "That was a fun race," Mortensen said in victory lane. "I didn't know if I was going to be able to get by him when I was chasing him and once I got by I didn't know where he was. This car is new for this year and it is going real good right now." While the Mortensen Motorsports Team was celebrating their victory at Fonda their crew chief Brett Mortensen was getting ready to compete in a race of his own on Sunday, April 21 called the Seneca 7 which was held in Geneva, NY. The event is a 77.7 mile stretch of running and biking and Brett's seven member team called "Blazing Saddles" finished in 68th place out of a total of 208 teams! Congratulations and great job Brett!

STAY TUNED with PAUL HILL The Terwilliger barn and cobblestone farmhouse on Saratoga Rd is no stranger to controversy or discussion. 65 years ago in June of 1948, before the development of the Rt 50 corridor, owner S.L Terwilliger approached the Town of Glenville for permission to rent the barn for a cabinet shop. Since it was adjacent to not only the airport but the GE lab as well, history will record that permission was denied citing that the required zoning change would be impractical as a residential section due to the noise of the planes and the experimental work at the GE lab! Today the GE Lab (R&D) is in Niskayuna and the farmhouse is long gone having been replaced with an automated car wash but and the barn remains; now colorfully painted and home to a Chip Coffey and Lisa Durand business run by Lisa Durand as “La Moda Lisa”. So much has changed outside over the years however inside the barn secrets remain, some of them noisy, some of them mischievous, some hidden, while some are lurking in the shadows that make up the 3 stories of the old dairy barn. The evening of April 5th 2013 nationally known and widely acclaimed Psychic Chip Coffey along with the Northeast Paranormal Society represented by Josh and Amanda hosted an informal gathering at the barn for a few lucky people, me included. Listening to his experiences that he wrote about in “ Growing up Psychic”,;Chip recounted his childhood growing up in a haunted house that presented disembodied voices that not only communicated with the people, they were heard calling the dogs who lived there! Chip went on to explain the various electronic devices you see on the TV shows that capture the spirits presence and how they work. The audience was comprised of not only the invited guests but the spirits who are still attached to the barn. In a private session on the second floor that began with a protective prayer, the spiritual inquest quickly manifested into the physical as the spirits began manipulating “Mag Lights” sitting on a stand in the center of the room. For the next hour unseen hands turned them on and off in direct response to questions posed by Chip AND the audience-

this is where it really got intense. Chip was holding a conversation with the dead-and they were answering. If you could have seen our collective faces when this unfolded you would know this was no prank. Since no cameras were allowed during the session, my recording of the night will preserve the event, to be reviewed over and over again… it was completely unbelievable to witness, I will let those who attended attest to the events we saw and shared. These lights were not a “gimmick” or trick, they are stock hardware store Mag Lights that require the cap to be rotated in order to make them light. The explanation is if you rotate the cap so the light 'just turns off” and the contacts are in close proximity but not touching, electrical impulses or energy can “jump” and complete the circuit, lighting the lamp. As Chip began to challenge the spirits to communicate by knocking or turning on one of the lights, as sure as I sit here after hearing a knock, one the lights came on… the light TURNED ITSELF ON and then when Chip asked the light to go out, it did but the other light came on as if to taunt us. Multiple spirits were presenting themselves this evening as the lights flickered at times and if all this wasn't enough, while recording the event using the recording app on my Iphone, MY PHONE lit up along with the Mag lights. Thank God I have witnesses to this as my phone rested in the palm of my hand yet appeared to react and turn on and off with the lights. In addition to the Mag lights another device was presented from the Northeast Paranormal Society who had been monitoring the evening with a piece of equipment called “Franks Box”, an EVP device wherein voices from the static appeared to call out names; names of people in the room that Chip had never met. One in particular was an employee of Lisa's who basically FREAKED when her name was called out. The Subject matter of the evening will remain with the folks who came. I decided that it would be inappropriate to divulge as it was clearly personal at many levels and better left to those who attended to share at their discretion. One point that must be made clear is there is without question a force or energy at work or play in La Moda Lisa. STAY TUNED!

JAVITA COFFEE COMPANY I'm Jaime Hill, if you read my column last month you know I have been trying to lose weight for quite some time. With the help of Javita products I have lost 25 lbs over the past 2 months! My husband Chris has lost a whopping 35 lbs! We have been sharing our success with friends and family and the feedback has been tremendous. Not only are people losing the weight they want to but they have found a great source of income by spreading the word about Javita products. This month I am going to tell you about Javita's energy + mind coffee Energy + Mind Javita is an effective and delicious way to increase mental alertness, improve memory, improve energy and gain antioxidants which counter health damaging free radicals in our body. Javita energy + mind is a potent blend of green tea, gotu kola and bacopa monnieri herbal extracts to provide maximum health benefits. People all over the world are raving about how they feel after drinking Javita regularly! Billions of coffee lovers around the world reach for their morning cup to help jumpstart their day, and their brain in the process. Coffee lovers ourselves, we recognize this desirable quality, which is why we've infused the herb Bacopa Monnieri to give you more of what you want and expect from your coffee-brain boosting qualities. Why Bacopa Monnieri? It has a long history of use as a popular brain tonic to increased mental clarity, improved mental and brain functions, enhance clear thinking and support learning and memory. BACOPA MONNIERI The bacosides (saponins) in Bacopa appear to play a protective role in the synaptic functions of the nerves of the hippocampus, the seat of memory. Nerve impulses are transmitted across the synapses (the gap between the neurons, over which impulses lead to their learning), and their degeneration is believed to contribute to impaired memory and cognition. Use of Bacopa is thus thought to improve learning skills andimpaired memory. Additional brain effects of Bacopa demonstrated in lab research include reduction of both anxiety and depression. Biochemically, these nervous system effects have been attributed to an enhancement of the effects of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and, possibly serotonin or GABA. SHARPEN UP When formulating our energy + mind blend, we infused an herb called centella asiatica (or gotu kola) to add something your tall cup fromStarbuck's will never provide, mental clarity. Why gotu kola? It has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years in India, China and Indonesia toimprove mental clarity. GOTU KOLA It is regarded as one of the most spiritual and rejuvenating herbs in Ayurveda and is used to improve meditation. It is said to develop the crown chakra, the energy center at the top of the head, and to balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain, which the leaf is said to resemble. Gotu kola has been referred to as "food for the brain." This oriental herb has demonstrated mild tranquilizing, anti-anxiety and anti-stress effects, as well as improving mental functions such as concentration and memory. It has a calming effect on the body and is chiefly used to support the central nervous system. These beneficial qualities offer some hope for those who have challenges focusing, as the herb has demonstrated the ability to have a soothing and relaxing effect on an overactive nervous system. As a brain tonic, gotu kola is said to aid intelligence and memory. It strengthens the adrenal glands while cleansing the blood to treat skin impurities. It is said to combat stress and depression, energize flagging mental powers, increase libido, ward off a nervous breakdown and improve reflexes. It energizes the central nervous system and rebuilds energy reserves. Boys State is a program of The American Legion developed from the concept that youth should be offered a better perspective of the practical operation of government; that the individual is an integral part, and commensurately responsible, for the character and success of his government. One of our local students, Patrick McGuinness has the dubious honor of being the first selection from the Burnt Hills district. An 11th grade student at BH-BL High School, Patrick saw a bulletin at school that captured his interest regarding the program; he decided to apply and forwarded his resume. Patrick is the son of John and Simone McGuinness, he has a brother Thomas who is currently at West Point and a sister Mary, a freshmen at Burnt Hills High School. On review Patrick has much to offer. He is an Eagle Scout who was “tapped out' into the Order of The Arrow and is currently the Den Chief for Pack 83 from Stevens School, a position he has held for 5 years. Patrick is a Cross Country distance runner with a desire to seek a career in Marine Engineering with an eye on attending the US Merchant Marine Academy, Clarkson, or SUNY Maritime. Patrick isn't ruling out other possibilities that will be presented at the upcoming program being held at the SUNY Campus in Morrisville in June. He was interviewed by John Ryan from the Air National Guard as his candidate and Bill McBride from the American Legion who oversaw the process. Both were very impressed with his composure and focus and to quote John, “Pat presented himself as true gentlemen with a solid moral compass and desire to learn”. As such, this program is an activity of high educational value, born of a need for youth training in practical citizenship. To elaborate - Boys' State is easily classified as a Leadership Action Program wherein qualified male high school juniors participate in a practical government course designed to develop in the young citizens a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon them the fact that their government is just what they make it. Boys' State is not a summer camp! Although there will be designated recreation times, Boys' State is NOT a picnic - NOT an outing - NOT a sports camp. Sponsoring groups are asked to note that Boys' State is in no way a rehabilitative, disciplinary, or recreational camp. Only young men with outstanding qualifications in leadership, character, scholarship, service, and citizenship who will have a serious attitude toward an intensive citizenship training program should be selected. Appearance, neatness, and good grooming are a must. Attitude and appearance go hand-in-hand. The image projected by candidates to Boys' State reflects upon the youth of America. The Boys' State County Chairmen and Post Chairmen are reminded that the selection of Boys' State candidates is a judgment of prime importance that will reflect on the quality and success of this Americanism Youth Program of The American Legion.

Physical fitness is an integral part of Boys' State. There will be time set aside for a physical program to include calisthenics and marching to meals and assemblies to prepare the boys for the parade which is one of the high points of the program. What Are the Objectives of Boys' State? Naturally, a program of this scope and magnitude encompasses many objectives, all of which are important, however, the objectives we feel are the most important and those for which we strive the hardest to attain are as follows. A. To develop civic leadership and pride in American Citizenship. It is our earnest hope that each young man who attends Boys' State will return to his community a better citizen than when he left and that he will have a desire to demonstrate this fact by his willingness to make civic contributions which will help make his community a better place in which to live. B. To stimulate a keen interest in the detailed study of our government. C. To incite in these young citizens a determination to maintain our form of government. D. To develop in these young men a full understanding of our American traditions and belief in the United States. E. The American Legion aims to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to their community, state, and nation in these young men and to charge them with the safeguarding of the principles of America Democracy, Justice, and Freedom - the legacy of their forefathers. Your Hometowne is PROUD to have had Patrick selected for this opportunity and wish him well in his educational and career endeavors.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT SOLUTION? All of my contact lens patients are used to the series of questions I ask during every contact lens follow-up. One of the many questions I ask is “what cleaner are you using?” The answers vary from “whatever is on sale” to “the stuff you told me to use.” Often I am asked if it really matters what they use. The answer is most definitely YES! You may have noticed that grocery stores and pharmacies sell storebranded contact lens care products, also known as "private label" products. Often they are considerably cheaper than name-brand products. Should you use them? These products are safe and FDA-approved, or they couldn't be sold. But there are potential problems. Often private label products are made from older formulations, which don't offer the same advantages as newer products. But here's the bigger problem. As you know, you shouldn't switch products without consulting your doctor to make sure the new solution is compatible with your lenses. Let's say that you buy a bottle of Store-brand X, bring it to your doctor, and he gives you the OK. You use the product, and everything is dandy. Next time you buy Store-brand X, it may not be the same product. That's because the store doesn't, of course, make its own solution. They buy it from a supplier. If a better deal comes along, they might switch suppliers - and even formulations - but still sell the revised product under the "Store-brand X" name. And the revised formulation may or may not be right for your eyes or your particular contact lenses. So even if you are cleaning your lenses as instructed, if you are using the wrong product, it may be less effective or even harmful to the contact lens and your eye health If you wear contacts, it is vital that you understand the importance of proper lens care. Properly caring for your lenses can prevent serious eye infections, some that could even cause blindness. Most importantly, clean and disinfect your contact lenses once a day. If you wear extended wear contacts, clean and disinfect the lenses as soon as you remove them, unless they are designed to be discarded immediately after use. Not only will your eyes be safer and healthier, but your contact lenses will be more comfortable to wear, too. SPARTAN POP WARNER A 35 YEAR TRADITION For over 30 years Spartan Pop Warner football and cheer has been a staple in our community. On any given summer evening you’ll find the children and their parents filing into the Middle School for practice. As important as our athletes are, parents play just as important a role in the organization. Not only are they the first role models of sportsmanship and commitment, but they are also our coaches, board members and supporters. Pop Warner is an international organization. Local associations are overseen by league, regional, and national organizations for level of play and safety guidelines. Our coaches are made to undergo first aid and CPR training as well participate in mandatory coaching clinics. Strict insurance regulations ensure that our participating families are covered in the case of injury. In addition to Pop Warner being a great athletic program, it also offers the Little Scholars program which rewards our athletes who maintain exceptional grade averages. Last year we had eight athletes who were recognized at a local banquet for maintaining a GPA above 96%. What does this all mean for your child? Your child will be proud to be a Spartan. He/she will learn to work together with teammates, negotiate and compromise. They we will learn dedication and perseverance. HELLO MAY... IT'S ME AND I AM BACK! Let me begin by saying that I missed the heck out of ya all last month. It was a tough one. You know we all have our ups and our downs. The downs seemed to out weigh all the rest for me and yet as the days moved away so did the downs. Leaving in its wake bluer and warmer skies. Ok, I know it rained all the time too, but you know the saying... April showers bring May flowers. And I am ready for those flowers - bring 'em ON!! It was simple really...even a bit funny! This and that was going on. I found myself thinking too much. Worrying too much. Not paying attention enough and allow it all to take over. We all have our "stuff" going on. Work, play, our families, kids and our health. When any of these fail, we find ourselves in turmoil. It takes time to make a game plan, time to surround yourself with those who can help you. It takes time to allow yourself to be helped. As the sun shines brighter and the worries fade away you can once again go about your business. Resting up before the next blast of confusion and chaos. Here comes the simple and funny part... I was driving home from my therapist's office (yes, even the bright and shiny people need someone to talk to sometimes..) I called my brother. I called to check in. I told him that I was heading home from the session and I said to him, "here's the thing... my life has been crazy and now, it is quiet." As I laughed I said I cannot believe that I am struggling with NOT having a bunch of issues in my life. Hmm, how funny is that? I have found it hard to negotiate a life without having deadlines, dates and appointments with doctors. He reassured me that the chaos would soon find its way back and I would wish for this time again right now. He said to just enjoy it. Simple! I changed when I got home into my work clothes, packed a lunch and headed out to a job that I love. I am looking forward to getting home and grabbing my son (who actually likes to spend time with me)to head out and go boxing. Looking forward to warmer weather to plant some of those May flowers we keep hearing about. The purple patio furniture is out and the patio has been pressure washed. Lookin' good if I do say so myself. It may just be the perfect setting for a Mother's Day breakfast! Simple! So for now I will put my feet up and pour a glass of fresh brewed ice tea and simply enjoy that I have nothing going on. Enjoy the feeling that everything in the world is right and I do not have anything to worry about today. As the flowers of May bloom, step out of the chaos and confusion, even for just a moment and enjoy the peace and quiet of nothing to do. As always, I wish you peace, joy, a Happy Mother's Day and much to do about nothing! Pattie Rakvica • idriveaware@gmail.com

HAPPY SPRING Each month I share “Decorating Tips from The Speckled Hen” and introduce you to new ways to decorate your home with primitives. Last month I gave you an overview of design and colors. This month let's add onto that with some tricks and tips to painting and distressing furniture. A new coat of paint can completely transform an item - it can add character and style to many types of decor. And it's easy to do! The first step is to determine what you'd like the finished piece to look like. Determine how many layers (colors) you will have. If you'd like to see an old paint color exposed (as if the piece has been painted many times over), you'll need to paint two (or more) colors. This technique allows you to create more interest and age in your projects. If you'd prefer the bare-wood to peak through, you just need one color. Here's the materials you'll need to get started: satin latex paint for the base coat, satin latex paint or a wood stain for the top coat, painting tools, candle (or a bar of soap - needs to be a pure soap like Dove or Ivory), medium-grade steel wool, sandpaper, tack cloth, polyurethane to finish (optional). And away we go… 1. Lightly sand the object you want to distress. If the object already has a finish (previously painted or varnished), sand all surfaces well. After the sanding, wipe the piece with a tack cloth. 2. Paint the entire piece in the base color you've selected (a bright color will peek through the top coat best). 3. For the bare-wood look, when the base coat is dry, start sanding off areas that would naturally end up distressed - places where hands would have held it, or corners that could easily get nicked. Be sure to stop before you go too crazy with the sanding, and then wipe the entire piece with the tack cloth. 4. For the layered look, rub candle wax (or soap) on the areas where you'd like to see color show through. This creates a "waxy" coating that allows the paint to be sanded off easier to reveal the color underneath. 5. Then paint over the base coat and the wax. Cover everything well. 6. After the paint dries, rub the steel wool over the areas you've waxed. The steel wool won't harm the rest of the paint enough to worry about remember, the piece is meant to be distressed, so use it to find the waxed areas. Wipe off the piece with the tack cloth. 7. Don't forget to do the sides and back; you want the entire piece to be finished! 8. And finally, apply a finish if desired.

Garafalo's, the taste people travel for!

Of course you can place sausages right on the grill and cook them the old fashioned way. The biggest problem is that people use a high heat and burn the surface before the middle gets cooked. The other problem is that when a sausage cooks it leaks juices that can cause flare-ups and add to the burning problem. To eliminate the burning and the flare-ups you need to keep the fire low. This increases the cooking time, but lets the sausage cook gently and hold in its flavor. Some people will tell you to puncture the skin, but this will just let the juices out to start more fires. Keep the sausage casing intact and the heat low. How you serve and eat sausages is important to the method of cooking. If you are going to be chopping the sausages up for another recipe, then any method that holds in the flavor will do. If you want to serve the sausages straight up, then take care to cook them gently to preserve the appearance as much as the flavor. As with most meat, as the meat cooks and the proteins set up the juices get pushed to the center. After obtaining a proper internal temperature (in this case 145 degree F) let them rest for about 3 minutes after coming off the grill to allow the juices to be reabsorbed away from the center.

BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW! In 1941, an increasing number of British Airmen found themselves as the involuntary guests of the Third Reich and the Crown looked for ways and means to facilitate their escape. Now obviously, one of the most helpful aids to that end is a useful and accurate map. Paper maps had some real drawbacks -- they make a lot of noise when you open and fold them, they wear out rapidly and if they get wet, they turn into mush. Someone in MI-5 (similar to America's OSS) got the idea of printing escape maps on silk. It's durable, can be scrunched-up into tiny wads and unfolded as many times as needed, and makes no noise whatsoever. At that time, there was only one manufacturer in Great Britain that had perfected the technology of printing on silk and that was John Waddington, Ltd. When approached by the government, the firm was only too happy to do its bit for the war effort. By pure coincidence, Waddington was also the U.K. Licensee for the popular American board game, Monopoly. As it happened, 'games and pastimes' was a category of item qualified for insertion into 'CARE packages', dispatched by the International Red Cross to prisoners of war. Under the strictest of secrecy, in a securely guarded and inaccessible old workshop on the grounds of Waddington's, a group of sworn-to-secrecy employees began mass-producing escape maps, keyed to each region of Germany or Italy where Allied POW camps were regional system. When processed, these maps could be folded into such tiny dots that they would actually fit inside a Monopoly playing piece. As long as they were at it, the clever workmen at Waddington's also managed to add: 1. A playing token, containing a small magnetic compass 2. A two-part metal file that could easily be screwed together 3. Useful amounts of genuine high-denomination German, Italian, and French currency, hidden within the piles of Monopoly money! British and American air crews were advised, before taking off on their first mission, how to identify a 'rigged' Monopoly set -- by means of a tiny red dot, one cleverly rigged to look like an ordinary printing glitch, located in the corner of the Free Parking square. Of the estimated 35,000 Allied POWS who successfully escaped, an estimated one-third were aided in their flight by the rigged Monopoly sets , It's always nice when you can really play that 'Get Out of Jail' Free' card!

The best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a porch with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you've had. ~ Author Unknown

In 1988 Kerby and Cindy Loukes made the decision to become entrepreneurs. With one truck, a lawnmower and one part time employee; Pro Cut Landscape Services was conceived in the Historical Town of Charlton. Kerby was focused on customer service and building long term relationships with his customers. The business steadily grew as did their family. Cindy has manned the phones and scheduled the appointments all while running a household and raising their two girls; Katie and Karlie. After many years of hard work and determination Kerby now heads up a fleet of trucks and 13 employees and the business has blossomed into a full service landscape design company. The Loukes understand that your home is primarily where you and your family will go to relax, rejuvenate, and spend quality time together on a day to day basis. It is also one of your largest assets. Pro-Cut Landscape Services believe a well-planned and thought out site design and highquality landscape will enhance your outdoor living area and allow you to enjoy your space to the fullest. Whether it is a retaining wall, walkway, patio, water feature, or new shrub package, one or all of these enhancements will completely change your outdoor environment to maximize your family's time together. Pro-Cut only uses top quality products and follows all industry standards to ensure the results will be beautiful and long lasting. They can also handle all your

lawn sprinkler needs and design an irrigation system for your property that encompasses sustainable plant life and improved turf quality. Their irrigation services include system design and installation, spring startup, system repair and maintenance, and winterization. To take advantage of your view at night; Pro Cut will install a striking outdoor lighting system.to extend your families time for relaxation and togetherness even after the sun goes down. For 25 years, Pro-Cut has been fulfilling 100's of customers maintenance needs in our area. Along with all of their enhanced services they will still take care of your spring and fall cleanups, grass cutting, shrub and tree trimming/pruning, bark mulching and any other general maintenance needs. Extraordinary customer service is what the company was built on and the reason why Kerby and Cindy have grown this successful family business in Charlton. They know you have many choices when it comes to hiring a contractor for landscape design, but their quality customer service makes them a “frontliner” for your choice. They have invested in their equipment and actively train their staff in the latest techniques and methodology by attending regional landscape and nurseryman shows. They also participate in technical training on a national level through their association with Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS). Their mission is to create a beautiful and functional landscape design that you can be proud of. Pro-Cut will transform your "ordinary" yard into an area of delight and relaxation. And at the end of the day, it is the long lasting relationship with their customers that comes naturally because they are willing to work for it.
