A message from “The lake leaves you speechless, yet turns you into a story teller” ~Me

As many of you know, last summer was the first summer in 30 years that I was without a boat. I sold my tub of 20 years and decided to find other ways to enjoy the summer. Yeah, terrible idea. I bought another one this spring. Boating is not an activity, it is a lifestyle. It’s not about fancy deck shoes or owning the fastest, coolest boat. It’s about spending quality time with good people. Helping each other to come into port safely, laughing at goof-ups and praising slick moves of the Captain and crew when they do a good job (sometimes we lie). I missed that comradery more than anything. Now that I’m back on the water, I spent a wonderful summer scurrying up and down the docks of Gordon’s Lakeside Marine in Mayfield. The comradery of the members and owners truly helped my heart feel good again. I feel at home there. Making memories Much of the summer was spent with a cooler full of food, cocktails and friends floating on The Great Sacandaga. We laughed: a lot. And ate bacon! Ohhhh I’m so grateful for Janet, my bacon cooking friend! Then there is Laurie, my “do it all” girlfriend who helped organize and pretty my boat up. Kris and Mark with their cooler full of fresh fruit. Gary who travelled from Australia to hang out on our lake. The memories made on the boat this summer are treasures I will hold forever. I hope my friends feel the same, since it sounds like I worked them to death and ate their food in writing. “…and all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” ~ Oscar Wilde I knew it would come...the end of the boating season. What I didn’t expect is how Sacandaga people celebrate it. No mundane clam steams peppered with microphone grabbers pontificating about the dreaded winter to come. Nope, Sacandaga people celebrate the end of the season with a party. Not just any party, The Ring of Fire, the mother of all parties!!

Huge bonfires lit up the entire shoreline, fireworks were kissing the summer sky goodbye. Old friends and new friends scurrying up the docks of Gordon’s Marina to watch the initial lighting of the fires along the shoreline. Then gathered together for our own bonfire, graciously provided by Derrick who lives next door to our marina. We laughed, told fish stories, made S’mores, all of us oohing and aahing in unison at the ongoing fireworks. As the fires died down we reminisced about the season while staring at the stars; a touch of sadness was setting in as we gathered our stuff and went back to our boats. Within a few weeks most of us will not see each other until spring. I have to say, the way we ushered out the season is making that bitter pill a little easier to swallow. “It is good people who make good places.” ~ Anna Sewell, Black Beauty From the first day I looked at my boat and throughout the entire summer the people at Gordon’s, members and owners alike made my summer so nice. The owners Gregg, Deb and Stacey are just great people. Gregg’s Dad, Bob, or as I fondly call him, my “boat boyfriend” smiles like crazy, even though he is working his butt off. Free labor he says, that’s what I am! Actually, he is visiting from Florida for the summer and loves every minute spending time with his son Gregg. Gregg can multi-task better than anyone I know. Every time you lift your head he’s doing something different. And when I had a little problem that could have ruined my weekend he dropped everything he was doing and made it so we could enjoy the party. As the end of the season draws closer by the day I can honestly say being on Sacandaga improved my life and fed my soul. When I named my boat Soul Shine, I had no idea how true to the name she would be. I’m going to miss her. “Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day” ~Warren Haynes, Allman Brothers Band ~Peace,

“Oh, but the fire went wild” ~Johnny Cash yourhometowne@gmail.com

Vision Changes as We Age

The Great Blue Heron The heron stands in water where the swamp Has deepened to the blackness of a pool, Or balances with one leg on a hump Or marsh grass heaped above a muskrat hole. He walks the shallow with an antic grace. The great feet break the ridges of the sand, The long eye notes the minnow’s hiding place. His beak is quicker than a human hand. He jerks a frog across his bony lip, Then points his heavy bill above the wood. The wide wings flap but once to lift him up. A single ripple starts from where he stood. ~ Theodore Roethke

Just as the body changes with age, our eyes undergo changes, too. Aging changes in various parts of the eye can result in a number of noticeable differences in how well you see. While not everyone will experience the same level of symptoms at the same age, the following are common age-related vision changes that will occur: Need for More Light: As we age, we need more light to see as well as we did in the past. This can be caused by changes in pupil size; which decreases as we age. To remedy this, brighter lights in your work area or next to your reading chair can help. When the bright lights aren’t making tasks easier, it is commonly due to the presence of crystalline changes called cataracts. Difficulty Reading and Doing Close Work: Printed materials are not as clear as before, in part because the lens in our eye becomes less flexible with time. This makes it harder for our eyes to focus on near objects with the same ability we had when we were younger. The use of reading glasses or bifocals can easily solve this problem. Problems with Glare: We may notice additional glare from headlights at night or the sun reflecting off of windshields or pavement during the day. These things can make driving more difficult and possibly unsafe. Changes within the lens in our eye cause light entering the eye to be scattered rather than focused precisely on the retina, thus creating more glare. Changes in Color Perception: The normally clear lens located inside our eye may start to discolor making it harder to see and distinguish between certain shades of colors. Again, this is due to the presence and maturing of cataracts. Cataract surgery can be done to enhance colors. It is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the country. Reduced Tear Production: With age, the tear glands in our eyes will produce fewer tears. This is particularly true for women after menopause. As a result, our eyes may feel dry and irritated. Having an adequate amount of tears is an essential element in keeping our eyes healthy and maintaining clear sight. The use of artificial lubricants can increase ocular comfort, as well as provide a more adequate tear film; that will ultimately allow for clearer vision. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned in this article, it will likely benefit you to make an appointment with an eye care professional. They will be able to properly diagnose the cause of your issues and recommend appropriate therapies to alleviate them. We are proud to be celebrating

of vision care focused on you For more information contact Kristen Cameron, Burnt Hills Optical, 793 Rt. 50 Burnt Hills, 399-6130 or visit www.burnthillsoptical.com yourhometowne@gmail.com

Prepare for Cooler Temperatures from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services

Now that it’s September, we’re officially moving into the FALL season, even if the temperatures don’t yet reflect that. This is a great time to get your house ready for those cooler days and nights to come. Following are a few tips. Your home is your largest investment. Here are some ways to get it ready for the cooler temperatures. FURNACES Call a heating and cooling professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. Change your furnace filter every month it is in use. Install a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one. Keep the area around your furnace clear. FIREPLACES Have your chimney professionally cleaned if it hasn’t been for a while. Now is the time to chop or purchase firewood, and order propane if you use it. Store firewood at least 30 feet from your house. WINDOWS AND DOORS Use weather stripping around doors and caulk around windows to prevent cold air from coming in. Replace cracked glass in windows or doors. ROOF, GUTTERS and DOWNSPOUTS Clean out gutters to clear away debris. Consider installing leaf guards or gutter helmets to keep debris out, and put extensions on your downspouts to direct water away from your home. Replace any worn roof shingles or tiles. Check flashing to make sure that no water can enter your home. EQUIPMENT Drain gas from your lawnmower. Service or get a tune-up for your snow blower. Clear and store warm weather gardening equipment. FOUNDATION Rake away debris and vegetation from the foundation, and seal up gaps and cracks. SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS Test your detectors to make sure they work. Replace fire extinguishers that are older than 10 years. Replace the batteries when you change the clocks - it’s a great way to remember to do it every year. Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and/or water heater, and on each floor of your home.

Alfred Kahler Golf Tournament Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Mohawk River Country Club & Chateau, Rexford. Check in is at 8:00 am, shotgun start at 8:45 am. $125 per golfer; $450 per foursome. Continental breakfast, lunch on the turn and buffet reception included. Hosted by The Baptist Health System

PLUMBING Know where your water main is in case of emergency! Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. Drain air conditioner pipes and turn off the water shut-off valve if there is one. LANDSCAPING AND OUTDOORS Trim tree branches that hang too close to the house. Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. Enjoy the crispness of the Fall season, and with your house in good shape, the cooler temperatures will be a breeze! Not Just Dance

“I feel like I have really grown as a dancer and as a person because of you, and I am so glad to have had the opportunity to take your classes. After all, your technique and attention to detail inspired me to start ballet and jazz. But I will never love ballet and jazz as much as I love modern. To me, modern dance is a creative outlet, an exercise in discipline, and a great work out- both mentally and physically. I will miss you and your classes so much next year. Thank you for inspiring me and making me a stronger person and dancer. I will never forget my years at Modern Dance with Ginny Martin and Dana Yager.” Jean- graduate This is an observation that parents and students frequently share with me. Through modern dance I work hard to help my students find their strengths and be proud of their uniqueness. Creative dancer exploration challenges students to believe in themselves when they need to make dance decisions. I encourage dancers to take creative chances when choosing movement through improvisation. I positively nurture the result of their efforts in interesting ways that motivate them to trust themselves further. Many dance forms only focus on the technical dancers, totally ignoring the development of the creative, emotional qualities and strengths that underlay the basic instincts a dancer needs to really shine. When both the technical and the improvisational aspects of a dancer strengthen in unison, then the whole dancer eventually emerges demonstrating confidence and joy. Confidence, creativity, joy and trust are all skills learned in a dance class at Modern Dance with Ginny Martin and Dana Yager. These are life long necessary traits that will carry them through life. Modern Dance with Ginny Martin and Dana Yager is now enrolling for the 2018-2019 dance season. Classes available for 4 years through adult and are in Glenville, NY. Please contact Dana Yager for more information.

Browz by Barbara I would like to introduce myself to you, the readers of Your Hometowne. My name is Barbara and I am aPermanent Makeup & Licensed Esthetician. I started my career in 1988. As you can imagine I have learned so much over the years; My goal is to share with you as much as I can. Over the next several months I will be discussing how you can turn back the clock and be proud of the skin you’re in. I’m open to any concerns and questions you might have. I hope you will enjoy our time together. How many of you out there have had a facial or procedure such as micro-needling, hyperpigmentation treatments(brown spots or sun spots,) scar, or acne treatment? You may ask what the heck is micro-needling? The procedure has been around for a while. It is done by piercing the epidermis with tiny needles. The amazing thing about this treatment is it stimulates your own collagen and helps muscles adhere to the bone. Micro-needling is a wonderful way to take care of your skin. The amazing thing about this treatment is as that stimulates your collagen and helps lift up your face! No foreign collagen is injected into your body. However; several sessions may be needed to achieve your goals. If thinning eyebrows are your concern, the new buzz word is microblading. It’s the art of shading the brows with hair strokes or tiny individual hairs. The results are amazing. It’s great for thickening brows, for people who have little or no brows, alopecia ( people born with no hair,). It is also fantastic for women who can’t see to apply makeup, have arthritis, wear contacts or have had Lasik surgery. It’s a wonderful way to wake up with your face made up. Trust me I have my brows, lips and eyeliner tattooed. I have saved so much time and money over the years. I have allergies and was constantly rubbing my eyes. What a mess. I don’t miss it. The next subject permanent make up. What that means is implanting pigment in the dermis the layer below the epidermis this is done with small needles. I use organic colors my patients. The color lasts longest when you use the correct ph skin care products. I always share this with my people. It makes a huge difference. I am able to repair scars caused by cancer treatments, tattoo areolas and help make you feel whole again. I use awesome numbing products and if there is discomfort I add more It’s all about communicating. One question that is asked a lot is about make up. For instance, the photos in my ad and this column that Cheryll took, I did put on a full face. But I don’t have to for that quick trip to the store where you always run into everyone. Please feel free to join my Facebook and ask questions, I look forward to making the community a little more beautiful, 1 woman at a time.

Just a little nip in the evening air 90 and humid just wasn’t fair A thump and a thud they fall to the ground A groundhog delights in an apple he found The leaves turn their faces from green to gold A new season has started to unfold Just a little nip in the evening air It is like the earths’ own love affair Equal day and equal night Merging together in the starlight Take your time to surely embrace This passing moment of goodness and grace As always I wish you peace, joy and just a little nip in the evening air Pattie Rakvica, Nutritional Therapist rakvicahealth@gmail.com

Is Your “Digital Estate” in Order? If you spend a lot of time on the internet, you’re not just shopping or being entertained, or following the news or participating in an online community. You’re probably also dealing with accounts and information that eventually can become part of your digital “estate.” And if this estate isn’t properly looked after, it can lead to confusion and conflict among your survivors, as well as an opportunity for hackers to try to get at whatever resources they can touch. If you haven’t stopped to think about it, you might be surprised at the number of assets that could become part of your digital estate. You may have financial accounts (banking, brokerage and bill-paying); virtual property accounts (air miles, “points” for hotel bookings); business accounts (eBay, Amazon, Etsy); e-mail accounts (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo); social networking accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram); online storage accounts (Google Drive, iCloud, Drobox); and application accounts (Netflix, Kindle, Apple). Given all these areas, how can you protect and preserve your digital estate? Here are a few suggestions: Create a detailed inventory of digital assets. Following the categories listed above, draw up a list of all your digital assets. Document your wishes for how you want your digital assets managed. If you don’t specify how you want your digital assets managed upon your death or incapacitation, you might be opening the door to lengthy legal battles over access to these assets. In a worst-case scenario, your heirs and beneficiaries might never get the assets you had intended for them. Name a digital executor in your last will and testament. A digital executor can accomplish a variety of tasks related to your digital estate, such as transferring online assets to your heirs; closing accounts you don’t want transferred; managing personal materials by archiving or deleting files, photographs, videos and other content you have created; and, finally, informing online communities of your passing. When choosing a digital executor, you’ll want someone you

yourhometowne@gmail.com

can trust, of course, but you’ll also want to make sure that person is skilled enough in technology to search your computer properly and navigate the internet and multiple websites. Not all states recognize a digital executor, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn about the laws governing digital estate planning in your state. Also, even if you have a digital executor, online platforms enforce their own rules about who can or can’t access a deceased person’s accounts. If you are concerned about this, you may want to contact the customer service areas from these types of providers – Google, PayPal, Facebook, etc. – to learn their policies. Review your plans. Review your digital estate plans on a regular basis, just as you do with your physical/tangible estate plans. The digital world is a fast-moving one, so you’ll need to stay current with changes. In some ways, managing a digital estate can be more challenging than dealing with a physical estate. But by following the above suggestions, you can help reduce any “cyber-angst” your loved ones may feel when it’s time to deal with the digital presence you’ve left behind. Giving Back When you watch a NASCAR race or any form of motorsports event often times they will talk about what drivers do to give back to those who are not as fortunate as they are, or as fortunate as even you and I are. Many of those drivers have organizations that they start to benefit different types of illnesses or organizations that treat those illnesses. What people may not know is that drivers from the local speedways also give back to the community in many ways. They bring their racecars to display at events involving their sponsors or organizations that are special to them. They also do little things at the track that some people do not often see or even know about from signing an autograph for a fan, to taking a picture with a fan, or even giving a trophy that they had just won after a feature win to a lucky race fan. After a feature win back on June 2 of this year at the Fonda Speedway, the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M of Mark Mortensen sat on victory lane with crew and sponsors posing for photos. One little girl who loves to come to Fonda to watch the #1M race got to stand on victory lane for a photo and her name was Emma Reedy who is the daughter of Mortensen Motorsports crew member David Reedy. When she left victory lane that evening she left with a trophy from the race winner and her favorite driver Mark Mortensen who gave her the trophy to take home with her. On Saturday, June 30 at the Fonda Speedway, the Fonda Speedway Kid’s Club held a bicycle giveaway, which Mortensen Motorsports donated to as well. A boys and girls bicycle were donated by the #1M Racing Team along with helmets to go along with them. Mark made plates with the #1M Mark Mortensen stickers on them and attached one to each bicycle and two lucky children went home that night with one of those two special bikes. Make A Wish Night was held at the Fonda Speedway on Saturday, June 2 and Mortensen Motorsports donated to the organization on behalf of Dawson Koehler. The drivers at the speedway that evening also went through the grandstands at intermission and collected

yourhometowne@gmail.com

money in what is called a “helmet drive” with the money collected also going to Make A Wish. So if you are wondering how Mark Mortensen, the driver of the 1M, is related to Dawson. It is his extended family. Dawson is Mark’s stepfather Ron Szczerba’s, great nephew. The 1M has had STOP ALD on the racecar since the beginning of Dawson’s illness and this year has Make A Wish on the racecar on behalf of Dawson. Dawson, whose date of birth is 06/28/2006, is the son of Shari Kelley and Michael Koehler and was diagnosed with ALD (adrenoleukodystrophy) when he was only two years old. He was a very sick little boy and in order for him to live, he needed to have a bone marrow transplant in which his sister, 17-year-old Courtney Koehler, was a 100% match. The family traveled to Boston to The Children’s Hospital where Dawson was admitted on 5/2/16. He started undergoing aggressive rounds of chemotherapy before his bone marrow transplant could take place. On 5/11/16, the bone marrow transplant was completed and the whole family was thankful that Courtney was a 100% match. Courtney was a courageous 16 year old at that time. She was a LIFE SAVER! Dawson had asked Make A Wish to have a Tree House built and was granted his wish and became a recipient for Make A Wish. A team of five guys came to their home and built him his “dream come true” house. Dawson was also featured in December on WTEN Channel 10 news in the Make A Wish commercials. On July 28, 2017, Dawson’s Dream Come True house was unveiled and Dawson got to see it for the first time. Lori DeBrino and Bonnie from Make a Wish came to Dawson’s home and provided pizza, soda, and cake for all family, friends, and the crew that built the house for Dawson. For more information about the Mortensen Motorsports #1M Racing Team you can go to their website www.markmortensen1m.com and you can also like them on Facebook.

Mindset Matters “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breath, to think, to enjoy, to love.” ~ Marcus Aurelius Change begins within. We talk to clients about living better, finding purpose, progressing with intent, and becoming more successful. We teach clients how to unlock “flow” in their lives and how to find joy, ease, and comfort. Step one is simply understanding your mindset. When you look around what do you notice? Do you notice what you do not have, what goes wrong, what is missing, your resentments, or what is bad or your crises in life? Or do you notice your blessings, all the good in life, special people, places, memories and joyful times? Do you think “It could be worse,” when things go wrong? What you notice, sets your path. A constant focus on what is missing or bad or what needs to be fixed results in chronic discontent and in extreme cases misery. This mentality is based on scarcity, the feeling there is never enough or things are not good enough and it becomes a thought pattern. To better understand this condition, we need to look at our own biology. Our brains have a negativity bias based on our survival needs. We have a heightened awareness to conditions that are not right to enable us to run from danger. However, in today’s society, we rarely need these primal skills. What we do need is some brain retraining, to condition our brain to focus on the positive and stay with it. Our brains, as the saying goes, are Teflon for good and Velcro for the bad. By recognizing this, we can combat our miseries and push ourselves into our joy without really changing conditions around us, but by changing our mindset. An abundance mentality is based on appreciation of what you have and what exists around you. Even in very bad times, there is still a sunset to appreciate. In your worst of times, there is generally a way of viewing things as potentially worse and therefore still providing an opportunity for some gratitude. Keeping yourself grounded in the good, yet aware of the bad without allowing it to be primary focus, is the key. Do you, or someone you know, need to change from a scarcity to abundance mindset?

are so capable. Then create a boundary and stop saying yes when you mean no. If you don’t feel you have enough, counter the thought with “I have everything I need.” Examine your regular mindset today. When we raise our level of consciousness to see our thoughts, observing them to learn, we empower ourselves to create the life we desire. Helene Verdile & Kim Perone are Certified Life Coaches at The Center for Clarity, Compassion & Contentment ~ A Wellness Center. “Abundance is not something we acquire, it is something we tune into.” ~Wayne Dyer Take time today to list everything that has worked and is working in your life. List all of the people who you have been blessed to have around you. Catch negative thinking and turn it around with a counter point. If you are resentful toward others because you feel you are being taken advantage of, consider it a blessing that people feel you yourhometowne@gmail.com

The Funeral People and communities have been honoring the passing of their loved ones long before history was ever recorded. Archaeological digs have uncovered countless burial sites that offer glimpses into the lives, cultures and traditions of ancient peoples and civilizations, providing insights that would otherwise have remained a mystery. In fact, ancient burial sites are the chief ways in which we learn about early cultures and their traditions. While many funerals are centered around a religious or cultural tradition, there are limitless ways in which a family can honor the life of a loved one. One of the most important things I tell families when they come to Townley & Wheeler – whether they are here to plan their own final arrangements in advance or to plan a funeral for a loved one who has just died – I am here to help them create a final tribute that will truly reflect the character and the life of that person. There are many places where a funeral can be held. Some families like the idea of holding a funeral service in the warm and comforting setting of our funeral chapel. Others may want to have a more solemn funeral service held in a house of worship, but perhaps they are hesitant to ask about it because they do not have a strong affiliation with a particular church. We are so fortunate that we live in a community where there is such strong support for the people who live here. You never have to worry about being turned away from a church just because you are not a regular parishioner. I cherish my responsibility to be able to coordinate with a priest, minister, rabbi or celebrant on behalf of the families I serve, helping them to feel comforted and welcomed by caring local clergy. A funeral service can be as simple as having a gathering of friends and family sharing memories, music and memorabilia of the person being honored. Or, it could be a full Mass or protestant service, with organists, soloist, choir or anything else your family feels is appropriate. Still other families may opt to keep their funeral service private and hold it at the cemetery or site where your loved one will be interred or entombed. The point is, everyone is unique and deserving of being honored in the way that is the most meaningful and will create memories of lasting love and devotion to a precious life. Regardless of what you decide to do, we at Townley & Wheeler will help make this process as simple and painless as possible. Our overarching goal is to help you and your family memorialize your life in the most suitable and respectful way possible. We hope you found this information valuable. Watch for our column next month, when our topic will be the funeral procession. In the interim, please contact us for a complimentary copy of Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home’s Pre-Planning and Bereavement Guide. This informative booklet contains useful information covering everything you need to know about planning your final arrangements in advance, as well as how to cope with the loss of a loved one.

Save a Life - “Adopt a Shelter Pet”

what’s

Butternut Squash Apple Soup Butternut squashes come in various sizes. Your ratio of chopped butternut squash to chopped apple should be 3 to 1. • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped (about 1 cup) • 1 celery rib, chopped (about 3/4 cup) • 1 carrot, chopped (about 3/4 cup) • 2 Tbsp butter • 1 butternut squash, peeled and chopped (6 to 8 cups), seeds discarded (see How to Peel and Cut a Butternut Squash) • 1 tart green apple, peeled, cored, chopped (squash and apple ratio should be 3:1) • 3 cups chicken stock or broth (use vegetable broth if cooking vegetarian) • 1 cup water • Pinches of nutmeg, cinnamon, cayenne, salt and pepper 1. Sauté onion, carrot, celery in butter: Heat a large thick-bottomed pot on medium-high heat. Melt the butter in the pot and let it foam up and recede. Add the onion, carrot, and celery and sauté for 5 minutes. Lower the heat if the vegetables begin to brown. 2. Add squash, apple, broth, water, then simmer: Add the butternut squash, apple, broth and water. Bring to boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes or so, until the squash and carrots have softened. 3. Purée the soup: Use an immersion blender to purée the soup, or work in batches and purée the soup in a standing blender. 4 Season with nutmeg, cinnamon, cayenne, salt, pepper: Add pinches of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cayenne. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or chives. Wiggle Room: I’ve made this on a steel plate, no skewers. It was delicious and easier!

Date and Balsamic-Glazed Brussels Sprouts • 2 pounds fresh Brussels sprouts • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 teaspoons butter • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup whole pitted dates, chopped • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a 15x10x1-inch baking pan with foil. Trim stems and remove any wilted outer leaves from Brussels sprouts; wash. Halve Brussels sprouts; spread in a single layer in prepared baking pan. Drizzle oil over Brussels sprouts. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes or until crisp-tender, stirring once or twice. 2. Meanwhile, for sauce, in a large nonstick skillet melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic; cook for 30 seconds. Add balsamic vinegar, dates, salt, and pepper. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes or until sauce is thickened and reduced to about 1/4 cup. 3. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to the sauce in skillet; stir to coat. Wiggle Room: Use balsamic glaze already prepared- there are some really good ones available!

Keto Churro-Style Cloud Bread • 4 eggs, separated • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar • 2 ounces cream cheese, slightly softened • 2 1/2 tablespoons monk fruit sweetener, divided • 2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon, divided 1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Line two baking pans with parchment paper. 2. Add the egg whites and cream of tartar to a stand mixer and mix on high until stiff peaks form. Set aside. 3. In another bowl, add the cream cheese, 1/2 tablespoon monk fruit sweetener, and 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon. Blend and add one egg yolk at a time until incorporated. 4. Gently fold the egg yolk mixture into the egg white mixture, careful not to deflate the whites. 5. Use about 1/4 cup of the mixture per piece of bread. Spoon into 4- to 5-inch rounds on the lined pans, about 1 inch thick. 6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. 7. As the bread bakes, combine the remaining monk fruit sweetener and cinnamon in a bowl. 8. When the bread is done, remove from the oven and brush the tops lightly with water. Sprinkle the sweetener-cinnamon mixture over each. Serve once cooled. Wiggle Room: You can top this with fruit, preserves, use your imagination

It’s Time to Take Care of Yourself New clothes, new school, new teachers, changes. Why wait until January 1st to make new resolutions? It’s time to take care of yourself... you know, the person you’ve been neglecting all summer long. September is the perfect time for new beginnings; to make changes before the holiday season creeps up on us. Starting chiropractic care can open up a whole new light to the way you see the world. It’s September, the kids are back in school, it’s getting cooler outside so you don’t spend as much time outdoors and the windows are closed in the house. That’s OK though, because the new TV season has started! In fact, you are likely spending a couple hours each night watching your favorite shows. October comes and the stress of the fall yard work is getting to you. Plus, you’ve had to pack up all the summer clothes and get out the winter ones. Now comes the time to find a Halloween costume. I bet you just can’t wait for the sugar rush to begin! November rushes in and suddenly it’s time to begin thinking about Christmas and Hanukkah presents. But first, you need to prepare the huge Thanksgiving feast! There will be every food you can think of (mostly carbohydrates though), and you will stuff yourself to the max before falling asleep sitting up on the couch watching football. That’s

OK though, you didn’t really want to spend any extra time talking to Uncle Harold anyway! You wrote a note to remind yourself to get your flu shot. As Americans, we are always on the go, in sympathetic overdrive, where we are in a constant state of fight or flight. Your body cannot rest or repair itself being in constant sympathetic overdrive and this puts our bodies in a state of “dis-ease”. Fortunately, chiropractic can help! Chiropractic adjustments put your body in a state of “ease” and allow your body to heal itself. The chiropractic adjustment puts your body in a more parasympathetic state, where your body is able to repair itself. Chiropractors work with your nervous system. We make sure your brain and body have a clear communication pathway with one another so that you are able to function normally. When your body is functioning normally, you tend to have less symptoms and more health. If you had been doing things that actively increased your resistance to those stresses—like creating a happy and peaceful mindset, deep breathing, getting enough water, eating a high energy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, decreasing sugar intake, getting enough sleep, exercising and getting adjusted by your chiropractor—it wouldn’t have made a difference anyway, right? I guess those people who don’t get the flu are just “lucky”, right? It guess it’s just coincidence that the “flu season” ends right about the time the TV season ends and high fructose corn syrup season ends (Halloween to Easter), and the weather starts getting warmer and people start opening their windows and looking forward to spring and working out to get into their bathing suits by summer, right??..... right. Much like the trees are letting go of their leaves and starting over, it is time for you to let go of the stress of the year and start fresh. It is time to get your body in a state of “ease” so you are more able and ready to take on the stresses of the upcoming holiday season. Why wait until January to take care of yourself? Start now with chiropractic. Call today or visit my booth at Glenville Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 29 for new patient specials! Special thanks to Kevin Donka, DC Now Accepting New Patients! Call, text or email Dr. Amy today to reserve your first appointment! (518) 399-3810 or chiropractor@thriveglenville.com

Time to Start Your Lawn The shorter, cooler days of early September make it the ideal time to make permanent improvements to the condition of your lawn. In fact, turf experts agree that this is the best time of year to start a lawn from seed but time is limited. The first step is a quick pH test on the area to see if the soil is acidic. If it is, apply enough pelletized lime to bring the soil back to neutral. The folks at your local garden center can help you figure this out. If you ignore this step and start seed in acidic soil, you’ll find that the seeds will sprout nicely but the grass will struggle to survive and establish itself. Since starting a lawn from seed is so labor intensive, don’t ignore this step. Once the lime is broadcast it is time for the grass seed. The best idea is to choose a blend that is specific to your need be it sandy, shady or sunny. Rough up the surface of the soil with a metal rake and then broadcast the seed evenly over the area at the recommended rate. Most folks overdo it and put down way more grass seed than is necessary. One or two seeds per square inch is just right. Premium grass seed isn’t cheap so there’s no need to seed too heavily. Once the seed is down, I like to give the area another light scratching with the rake to put the seed in good contact with the soil. Now there are only a couple of steps left, but they are the most important steps of all. Remember this, no matter how good your seed is, it won’t germinate unless the area is kept moist CONSTANTLY.

It can’t be allowed to dry out, even for an hour. If the area dries out completely, the seed dehydrates and dies and it won’t restart. If that happens, you’ll have to buy more seed and start all over again. To help keep the seeds moist, you’ll want to lightly cover the seed. The most common material used is a very light layer of shredded straw. The straw should be left down when the grass sprouts through it. Some folks try to rake up the straw, and they end up ripping out the young grass they worked so hard to get started. The straw will rot away and you’ll never know it was there. Even with the light layer of straw you’ll need to be vigilant... especially on any hot, breezy days. It might require light watering three or four times a day on some days. Just leave the sprinkler set up in the area for the month that it will take for the grass seed to sprout and grow some roots. After a couple of weeks when the grass is up and growing, apply a starter lawn food to the area to get it well rooted before winter. A good starter food will be high in phosphorus. The middle number on the lawn food bag represents phosphorus...the nutrient in the food that stimulates root growth. If you need to start a new lawn from seed or just need to do some spot repairs, time is of the essence. Remember, it takes about 6-8 weeks to get a lawn to sprout and mature to the point that it can withstand the winter ahead. Thanks for the read. Peter Bowden • pbowden2@nycap.rr.com

Learning, Growing and Thriving at the Y At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life. Because of the Y community, children are taking more interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children learn their ABC’s, learn to share, learn about sportsmanship and most importantly, learn how to be themselves. That makes for confident children today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Our early childhood education programs use Creative Curriculum. This approach to teaching pre-school children uses spontaneity and the ability to use every day opportunities to help children solve problems, explore new materials and find answers to questions. In addition to Creative Curriculum, learning centers offer an excellent way to individualize the curriculum to meet the varying needs of your child. These areas within a classroom support a variety of activities. The Glenville Y is here to accommodate your family needs for childcare. We offer before and after school programs, full and part time preschool, vacation day and snow day programs. Contact us for information or for a tour. We are happy to talk to you about your childcare needs. www.cdymca.org or 518-399-8118. Together, we’re building a stronger Glenville. Regarding Violins... And, by extension, I also mean violas, Cellos, and String or “double” basses. As a group, these are known as “Orchestral Instruments”. What makes a good violin? First, we start with a spruce or maple tree, high above the frost-line on a mountain. So high, that when it freezes in the winter, it STAYS FROZEN, which produces tight, even annular rings in the wood, which later, will conduct vibrations, and hence, tone, better. The top should be made of Solid Spruce the back and sides of maple, preferably “flame” maple, the pegs and fingerboard, and sometimes the tailpiece, should be made of rosewood, or, better, ebony. (Unlike the wood-like products in your “special deal!” internet or Big-Box store purchase, which are not properly cured wood, not set up correctly, and which have a wood veneer.) Good woods sound and last better than poorer materials. In the interior, there should be a dowel (“sound-post”), placed just so, and it will convey the vibrations from the front to the back of the instrument, as well as giving the thin woods strength. Don’t play it if it falls down! Good woods, properly seasoned to reduce moisture content and to give stability, master craftsmanship, and ageing are what makes a desirable instrument. The serious players cares about the following factors in this order:1.) How does it sound? 2.) How does it play (or feel)? 3.) What does it look like? As for care, treat it like a human friend. It likes room temperature, and it wants to be above 40% humidity. Dry cold winters, followed by hot, moist summers, as well as other factors, like wood stoves, car trunks (shudder!), et.al, can be the enemy. Remember, different woods contract and expand at different rates! Here at BURNT HILLS MUSIC, we want to be your source for Orchestral Instruments. We repair them, we sell them, we teach them. For school kids, you can “Rent-to Own” them, too. Arrangements for our Introductory Special can made over the summer, or the day before class in the Fall. You pay one month and get 3 MONTHS FREE! You can start with a small size, and eventually transfer the rental monies to a brand-new SCHOOL APPROVED full size instrument. Only $27.95/month plus tax and insurance. Return and discontinue whenever you please; you’re not “locked-in”. Lastly, feel free to call or stop in. It’s always free to talk about repairs, rentals , lessons, and more. And, of course, we’re well-known for our band instruments and guitars as well! I remain sincerely Yours, Rick Werblow (Owner)

Factoring Long-Term Care Into Your Estate Plan Pays Off For most people, thinking about estate planning means focusing on what will happen to their money after they pass away. But that misses one pretty significant consideration: the need to plan for long-term care. The last thing any of us want to contend with when a health issue arises later in life is having to throw together a hasty estate planning solution in the face of mounting medical costs. Your best defense is careful planning with the help of a trusted expert. Why it’s so important to plan for long-term care Only about 19 percent of current U.S. residents will need nursing home care for greater than three years. However, more than half of U.S. seniors require some period of nursing home level care at some time and the costs can mount with alarming speed. Elder Law attorneys can help in a number of ways. What to go over with your elder law attorney If long-term care isn’t factored into your estate plan, you are probably not looking at a truly realistic and accurate representation of your assets. Talk to your estate planning attorney about the following factors in order to get on the right track: 1. Set reasonable expectations for long-term care It’s impossible to know what life will bring, but we can certainly make educated guesses. Estate planning is an aspect of your

financial life in which it’s helpful to protect yourself against worstcase scenarios while you hope for the best. 2. Consider a long-term care insurance policy Do not assume your long-term care will be covered by Medicare of your health insurance plan. As Medicare or standard health insurance may not cover your costs, a long-term care insurance policy is one way to protect yourself against draining your financial assets. Consider a New York State Partnership policy as it may carry a more affordable premium. Premiums will be lower the younger you are when you apply. 3. Get smart about living wills and trusts Go over advance directives and end-of-life choices. Discuss options for establishing a living trust as part of your planning. It’s also important to create a plan that allows someone you trust to access and utilize your financial resources for your benefit in the event of unforeseen medical circumstances. One common mistake is tying up assets in investments that cannot be liquidated quickly when you might need them most. Working with a team of that includes an elder law attorney, financial advisor, CPA and/or insurance professional can provide you and your family with the best overall solution. Take the time now to talk to an estate planning attorney about the best ways to maintain financial security in tandem with the demands of long-term care. Even if you don’t end up needing longterm care in your lifetime, you can enjoy the peace of mind knowing you’ll be covered. We’re here to help you by making the process less daunting and scary.
